In het kader van het Taakstellend Plan ter ondersteuning van de normcommissie 390 11 afvalstoffen'(TSP) wordt door het RIVM een set van uitloogproeven voor organische componenten ontwikkeld. Deze uitloogproeven voor organische componenten worden gebaseerd op de reeds bestaande voorschriften voor anorganische stoffen. Voorafgaand aan onderhavig onderzoek zijn concept-voorschriften voor de kolomproef en cascadeproef voor Polycyclische Aromatische Koolwaterstoffen (PAK) ontwikkeld. In onderhavige studie is onderzocht of deze concept-voorschriften ook geschikt zijn voor de bepaling van de uitloogemissie van de groep PCB (polychloorbifenylen) en van de groep EOX (extraheerbaar organische halogeen verbindingen). De verliezen aan de bovengenoemde componenten als gevolg van vervluchtiging, afbraak onder invloed van licht en adsorptie aan diverse onderdelen van de testopstelling (van de uitloogproeven) zijn gekwantificeerd. In het algemeen was de adsorptie van PCB en OCB aan glazen materialen, zoals het voorfilter, glaswol en de fles minder dan aan de teflon materialen zoals de ringen, het gaasje en de effluentslang. Op basis hiervan wordt aanbevolen om materialen van glas te gebruiken in plaats van teflon materialen. Aangezien de (irreversibele) adsorptie aan het nylonfilter zeer groot was, dient men dit filter niet te gebruiken voor filtratie van eluaten met PCB en OCB, maar dient men een filter van glaswol te gebruiken. Daarnaast is het belangrijk om de lengte van de effluentslang te minimaliseren (0.5 m als maximale lengte). Het drukfiltratie-apparaat van teflon was niet geschikt voor eluaten met PCB en OCB. Vacuumfiltratie in een apparaat van glas leidde tot een kleiner verlies aan PCB en OCB, maar ook hierbij werd een verlies geconstateerd. Verlies aan PCB in schoon water als gevolg van blootstelling aan licht gedurende 10 dagen trad niet op. Daarentegen werd wel vervluchtiging waargenomen van PCB-28, 52 en 101 uit een wateroplossing welke gedurende 10 dagen was bewaard in een fles met een opening van circa 0.5 cm2. Naar aanleiding van de resultaten worden de volgende aanpassingen van het concept-voorschrift van de kolom- en cascadeproef (zoals deze voor PAK in eerste instantie was ontwikkeld) voorgesteld: 1. Vervang de combinatie van het teflon ondersteuningsgaasje, polyamidefilter, glasvezelvoorfilter en geregenereerd cellulose membraanfilter door glaswol of een glasvezelvoorfilter. 2. De kolombuis dient te zijn vervaardigd van glas en niet van teflon. 3. Extraheer de eluaten binnen een week. Vang de laatste kolomfractie in twee delen op. 4. Filtreer de eluaten over het 0.45 mum-membraanfilter van geregenereerd cellulose door middel van een glazen vacuumfiltratie-opstelling. Bovengenoemde aanpassingen van de uitloogproeven voor bepaling van de uitloging van PCB en OCB zijn (nagenoeg) dezelfde als voor de uitloogproeven voor PAK. Het is dus mogelijk om dezelfde kolom- en cascadeproef uit te voeren voor bepaling van de uitloging van PCB, OCB en PAK. Naar aanleiding van het geconstateerde verlies aan PCB, OCB en PAK bij filtratie van waterige oplossingen, wordt aanbevolen om centrifugatie als alternatief voor filtratie te onderzoeken.

Differences in the seasonal pattern of assimilatory and respiratory processes are responsible for divergences in seasonal net carbon exchange among ecosystems. Using FLUXNET data ( http://www.eosdis.ornl.gov/FLUXNET ) we have analyzed seasonal patterns of gross primary productivity (FGPP), and ecosystem respiration (FRE) of boreal and temperate, deciduous and coniferous forests, Mediterranean evergreen systems, a rainforest, temperate grasslands, and C3 and C4 crops. Based on generalized seasonal patterns classifications of ecosystems into vegetation functional types can be evaluated for use in global productivity and climate change models. The results of this study contribute to our understanding of respiratory costs of assimilated carbon in various ecosystems. Seasonal variability of FGPP and FRE of the investigated sites increased in the order tropical Mediterranean temperate coniferous temperate deciduous boreal forests . Together with the boreal forest sites, the managed grasslands and crops show the largest seasonal variability. In the temperate coniferous forests, seasonal patterns of FGPP and FRE are in phase, in the temperate deciduous and boreal coniferous forests FRE was delayed compared to FGPP, resulting in the greatest imbalance between respiratory and assimilatory fluxes early in the growing season. FGPP adjusted for the length of the carbon uptake period decreased at the sampling sites across functional types in the order C4 crops, temperate and boreal deciduous forests (7.5–8.3 g C m −2 per day )> temperate conifers, C3 grassland and crops (5.7–6.9 g C m −2 per day )> boreal conifers (4.6 g C m−2 per day). Annual FGPP and net ecosystem productivity (FNEP) decreased across climate zones in the order tropical>temperate>boreal. However, the decrease in FNEP with latitude was greater than the decrease in FGPP, indicating a larger contribution of respiratory (especially heterotrophic) processes in boreal systems.

A Surface Energy Balance System (SEBS) is proposed for the estimation of atmospheric turbulent fluxes and evaporative fraction using satellite earth observation data, in combination with meteorological information at proper scales. SEBS consists of: a set of tools for the determination of the land surface physical parameters, such as albedo, emissivity, temperature, vegetation coverage etc., from spectral reflectance and radiance measurements; a model for the determination of the roughness length for heat transfer; and a new formulation for the determination of the evaporative fraction on the basis of energy balance at limiting cases. Four experimental data sets are used to assess the reliabilities of SEBS. Based on these case studies, SEBS has proven to be capable to estimate turbulent heat fluxes and evaporative fraction at various scales with acceptable accuracy. The uncertainties in the estimated heat fluxes are comparable to in-situ measurement uncertainties.

De freatische bergingscoefficient in het hooggelegen zandgebied van de Utrechtse Heuvelrug werd gelijkgesteld aan de volume fractie lucht in de zandondergrond bij veldcapaciteit. Voor de dekzandgebieden aan de flanken van de Utrechtse Heuvelrug werd de freatische bergingscoefficient geschat op 0,15. Voor het resterende gedeelte van de Utrechtse Heuvelrug met grof tot zeer grof zand in de ondergrond werd de freatische bergingscoefficient geschat op 0,30. De grondwateraanvulling in het gebied werd berekend als functie van de plaats en de tijd. Het model MUST werd gebruikt voor de berekening van de potentiele verdamping, terwijl het model ONZAT werd gebruikt voor de berekening van de grondwateraanvulling. De berekende vertraging van het neerslagoverschot in de onverzadigde zone blijkt groter te zijn dan de vertraging, die volgt uit een analyse van het stijghoogte verloop in het gebied.

Input data of SEBS are satellite data and a limited set of ground measurements. By using the dual-looking viewing capabilities of the ATSR sensor on board the ERS-II it is possible to determine vegetation and soil temperature separately. These two temperatures can be used in SEBS - the dual source SEBS - in order to gain more insight into theevaporation process and to improve the physical basis of the algorithm. Testing and validation of single and dual source SEBS has been carried out with the use of existing data sets of the Netherlands and Spain. The algorithm sensitivity towards input variables is established. Air and surface temperatures and wind speed have a large impact on the results. Two input variables proof to be very hard or impossible to measure, i.e. the roughness length for momentum and the roughness length for heat transfer.The existing methods and models do not give satisfactory results. Validation is carried out with ground fluxes, measured by eddy devices and scintillometers.

Met het model SWAP is voor een reeks van 30 jaar de hydrologie gesimuleerd voor 6405 rekeneenheden. Dit rapport beschrijft de schematisering, de parametrisatie en de plausibiliteit van de resultaten van de berekeningen met het model SWAP. De resultaten worden in het algemeen als plausibel beoordeeld. Voor de verdamping geldt dat de berekeningswijze wordt gezien als state of the art. Voor grasland is een zeer plausibele verdamping berekend; voor bouwland behoeft de bodemverdamping meer aandacht. Drainagefluxen zijn voor meerdere oppervlaktewatersystemen berekend. Relatief ondiepe systemen blijken de grootste bijdrage te leveren aan de waterafvoer vanuit de bodem naar het oppervlaktewatersysteem, waarbij de aanwezigheid van buisdrainage van groot belang is. De berekende neerslagoverschotten en grondwatertrappen zijn plausibel. Aanbevelingen voor verbetering betreffen met name de schematiserings enenkele hydrologische aspecten, zoals beregening en de interactie met de regionale hydrologie.

Electrohydrodynamic atomization (EHDA) is a technique which uses the influence of strong electric fields to manipulate the break-up of a liquid, pumped through a capillary nozzle, into droplets. In this work, an extended description of a specific high flow EHDA mode, known as the simple-jet mode, is presented. In it, a review of different works published about the mode is presented as well as results about the droplet population generated with varicose and whipping break-up using water as the atomized liquid. Additionally, experiments were conducted to investigate whether such atomization method could be used to improve the efficiency of droplet inair evaporation, using a single effect evaporation chamber coupled with a EHDA multinozzle system functioning as a shower head. The liquid used in these experiments was a solution of water and NaCl (35 g L−1) to simulate sea water average concentrations. The results have shown that, the manipulation of the droplet diameter, droplet size distribution and spray angle, provided by EHDA, could improve the droplet evaporation efficiency by up to 40% when combinedwith, e.g. forced convection and higher inlet temperatures.
