BACKGROUND: Between 29% and 67% of neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder patients have cognitive alterations. OBJECTIVE: To assess the frequency of cognitive impairment in patients with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder in Mexico using the Brief International Cognitive Assessment for Multiple Sclerosis. METHODS: We evaluated 40 neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder patients and 40 healthy controls from Mexico. RESULTS: 28 (70.0%) patients with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder had cognitive impairment in two or more cognitive domains. Student´s T test showed statistically poor performance by neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder patients compared to healthy controls on all three neuropsychological test scores. This significant difference was observed on the Symbols Digit Modalities Test (t = 8.875; p ≤ 0.001); California Verbal Learning Test-II memory (t = 10.418; p ≤ 0.001); and Brief Visuospatial Memory Test Revised (t = 6.123; p ≤ 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that 70% of neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder patients exhibited cognitive impairment in two or more cognitive domains. Determining the frequency of cognitive impairment will guide the decision of Neuropsychologists in planning cognitive rehabilitation across various domains.

Background: Moderate to severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) often results in cognitive deficits. Processing speed (PS) deficits are common, exerting a significant impact on daily life. Few studies have examined the efficacy of cognitive rehabilitation specifically for PS deficits in moderate to severe TBI. Objective: Examine the efficacy of Speed of Processing Training (SOPT) in moderate to severe TBI. This protocol is a 10-session behavioral intervention for PS deficits that has been successfully used with other cognitively impaired populations. Methods: This double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trial included 46 participants with moderate to severe TBI, 22 randomly assigned to the treatment group and 24 to the placebo-control group. Baseline and followup measures included a task similar to the training task (UFOV), measures of near transfer (neuropsychological measures of processing speed: Symbol Digit Modalities Test (SDMT), Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-IV (WAIS-IV) Symbol Search, WAIS-IV Coding) and measures of far transfer [neuropsychological measures of learning and memory: the California Verbal Learning Test-II (CVLTII), Memory Assessment Scales - Prose Memory (MAS-PM)]. Results: Significant improvement from pre-to post-SOPT was observed on all subtests of the UFOV, which is similar to the training task. There was no significant difference on neuropsychological measures of PS or new learning and memory post-treatment. Neuropsychological assessment 6-months posttreatment showed no significant change in PS ability over time. Monthly booster sessions did not impact performance at the 6-month follow-up. Conclusion: Consistent with the SOPT literature, SOPT improves PS ability as measured by the UFOV, a task similar to the training task, in moderate to severe TBI. Purpose: Successful sentence production requires lexical encoding and ordering them into a correct syntactic structure. It remains unclear how different processes involved in sentence production are affected by healthy aging. We investigated (a) if and how aging affects lexical encoding and syntactic formulation during sentence production, using auditory lexical priming and eye tracking-while-speaking paradigms and (b) if and how verbal working memory contributes to age-related changes in sentence production. Methods: Twenty older and 20 younger adults described transitive and dative action pictures following auditory lexical primes, by which the relative ease of encoding the agent or theme nouns (for transitive pictures) and the theme and goal nouns (for dative pictures) was manipulated. The effects of lexical priming on off-line syntactic production and real-time eye fixations to the primed character were measured. Results: In offline production, older adults showed comparable priming effects to younger adults, using the syntactic structure that allows earlier mention of the primed lexical item in both transitive and dative sentences. However, older adults showed longer lexical priming effects on eye fixations to the primed character during the early stages of sentence planning. Preliminary analysis indicated that reduced verbal working memory may in part account for longer lexical encoding, particularly for older adults. Conclusion: These findings indicate that syntactic flexibility for formulating different grammatical structures remains largely robust with aging. While numerous studies on verbal working memory have investigated the capacity of the phonological loop and the effectiveness of rehearsal as one core process for maintaining the memory trace, the reconstruction of the memory trace from long-term memory, called redintegration, has been studied less thoroughly. This holds particularly for the population of students with special educational learning needs and mild and borderline intellectual disabilities (MBID). In a previous study, we found a differential developmental relation between the effectiveness of redintegration and vocabulary size, counter-intuitively suggesting that students with MBID tend to show less effective redintegration with higher vocabulary size. However, differential item functioning (DIF) in the picture naming task may have biased the result. Therefore, the current study is a re-analysis of this interaction controlling for DIF in the vocabulary measure. To this end, the items of the picture naming task (k = 95) were analyzed through a Rasch model, and k = 29 biased items were excluded. The resulting corrected vocabulary score was used to predict the redintegration effectiveness, comparing students with and without MBID. The interaction remains significant, supporting the original finding that students with MBID have a differential developmental pattern and are less able to make adequate use of a growing vocabulary when reconstructing traces in their working memory. The profiles of cortical gyrification across schizophrenia, bipolar I disorder, and schizoaffective disorder have been studied to a limited extent, report discordant findings, and are rarely compared in the same study. Here we assess gyrification in a large dataset of psychotic disorder probands, categorized according to the DSM-IV. Furthermore, we explore gyrification changes with age across healthy controls and probands. Participants were recruited within the Bipolar-Schizophrenia Network of Intermediate Phenotypes study and received T1-MPRAGE and clinical assessment. Gyrification was measured using FreeSurfer 7.1.0. Pairwise t -tests were conducted in R, and age-related gyrification changes were analyzed in MATLAB. P values <0.05 after false discovery rate correction were considered significant. Significant hypogyria in schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and schizoaffective disorder probands compared to controls was found, with a significant difference bilaterally in the frontal lobe between schizophrenia and bipolar disorder probands. Verbal memory was associated with gyrification in the right frontal and right cingulate cortex in schizophrenia. Age-fitted gyrification curves differed significantly among psychotic disorders and controls. Findings indicate hypogyria in DSM-IV psychotic disorders compared to controls and suggest differential patterns of gyrification across the different diagnoses. The study extends age related models of gyrification to psychotic disorder probands and supports that age-related differences in gyrification may differ across diagnoses. Fitted gyrification curves among probands categorized by DSM-IV significantly deviate from controls, with the model capturing early hypergyria and later hypogyria in schizophrenia compared to controls; this suggests unique disease and age-related changes in gyrification across psychotic disorders. The interthalamic adhesion (IA) is a structure that connects the median borders of both thalami. Its anatomical variants and functions remain poorly studied. The main objective of this study was to explore the role of the IA on cognition. 42 healthy subjects and 40 patients with chronic isolated thalamic strokes underwent a neuroimaging and a neuropsychological assessment. The presence, absence, or lesion of the IA and its anatomical variants were evaluated. 76% of participants had an IA, with a higher prevalence among women (92%) than men (61%). The presence or absence of an IA did not affect the neuropsychological performance of healthy subjects nor did the type of IA variant. Across all the tests and when compared to healthy subjects using a Bayesian rmANOVA, patients exhibiting more cognitive impairments were those without an IA (n = 10, BF10 = 10,648), while those with an IA were more preserved (n = 18, BF10 = 157). More specifically, patients without an IA performed more poorly in verbal memory or the Stroop task versus healthy subjects. This was not explained by age, laterality of the infarct, volume or localization of the lesion. Patients with a lesioned IA (n = 12) presented a similar trend to patients without an IA, which could however be explained by a greater volume of lesions. Rodents and human studies indicate that the hippocampus, a brain region necessary for memory processing, responds to noxious stimuli. However, the hippocampus has yet to be considered a key brain region directly involved in the human pain experience. One approach to answer this question is to perform quantitative sensory testing on patients with hippocampal damage--ie, medial temporal lobe epilepsy. Some case studies and case series have performed such tests in a handful of patients with various types of epilepsy and have reported mixed results. Here, we aimed to determine whether mechanical pain sensitivity was altered in patients diagnosed with temporal lobe epilepsy. We first investigated whether mechanical pain sensitivity in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy differs from that of healthy individuals. Next, in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy, we evaluated whether the degree of pain sensitivity is associated with the degree of hippocampal integrity. Structural integrity was based on hippocampal volume, and functional integrity was based on verbal and visuospatial memory scores. Our findings show that patients with temporal lobe epilepsy have lower mechanical pain sensitivity than healthy individuals. Only left hippocampal volume was positively associated with mechanical pain sensitivity--the greater the hippocampal damage, the lower the sensitivity to mechanical pain. Hippocampal measures of functional integrity were not significantly associated with mechanical pain sensitivity, suggesting that the mechanisms of hippocampal pain processing may be different than its memory functions. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurological disorder commonly associated with motor deficits. However, cognitive impairment is also common in patients with PD. Cognitive concerns in PD may affect multiple domains of neurocognition and vary across different stages of the disease. Extant research has focused mainly on cognitive deficits in middle to late stages of PD, whereas few studies have examined the unique cognitive profiles of patients with early-stage PD. This study addressed this gap in the published literature and examined neurocognitive functioning and functional capacity of patients with de novo PD, focusing on the unique pattern of cognitive deficits specific to the early stage of the disease. Results indicated that the pattern of cognitive deficits in patients with PD (n = 55; mean age = 72.93) was significantly different from healthy controls (n = 59; mean age = 71.88). Specifically, tasks related to executive functioning, attention, and verbal memory demonstrated the most pronounced deficits in patients with early-stage PD. Objective: Recognition memory is widely accepted as a dual process-based model, namely familiarity and recollection. However, the location of their specific neurobiological substrates remains unclear. Similar to hippocampal damage, fornix damage has been associated with recollection memory but not familiarity memory deficits. To understand the neural basis of recognition memory, determining the importance of the fornix and its hippocampal connections is essential. Methods: Recognition memory was examined in a 45-year-old male who underwent a complete bilateral fornix section following the removal of a third ventricle colloid cyst. The application of familiarity and recollection for recognition memory decisions was investigated via an immediate and delayed associative recognition test and an immediate and delayed forced-choice task in the patient and a control group (N = 15) over a two-year follow-up period. Complete demographic, neuropsychological, neuropsychiatric, and neuroradiological characterizations of this patient were performed. Results: Persistent immediate and delayed verbal recollection memory deficits were observed in the patient. Moreover, delayed familiarity-based recognition memory declined gradually over the follow-up period, immediate familiarity-based recognition memory was unaffected, and reduced non-verbal memory improved. Conclusion: The present findings support models that the extended hippocampal system, including the fornices, does not appear to play a role in familiarity memory but is particularly important for recollection memory. The ability of the Auditory Verbal Learning Test (AVLT) to lateralize hippocampal sclerosis (HS) in mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) was explored in a sample of 50 patients with MTLE-HS (23 right and 27 left). Patients' AVLT scores were adjusted to the demographic characteristics of each individual in accordance with the Portuguese normative data. The laterality of the HS was determined by consensus by two neuroradiologists. ROC curves were used to identify the best AVLT cutoff scores to differentiate right vs. left HS. Diagnostic statistics were applied to different AVLT measures. The study results revealed that four AVLT scores can correctly classify the laterality of HS in the total sample and a sub-group of 39 right-handed patients (Edinburgh Laterality Inventory +100): delayed recall trial (76 and 80%, respectively), delayed recognition trial (64 and 67%, respectively), learning over trials index (64 and 74%, respectively), and long-term percent retention index (68 and 72%, respectively). In right-handed patients, the diagnostic capability of the delayed recall trial was improved by pairing it with the learning over trials index (accuracy of 85%). In sum, AVLT measures of verbal memory differentiate left from right HS in MTLE. The delayed recall trial demonstrated good diagnostic capacity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The aim of this study is to establish which specific cognitive abilities are phenotypically related to reading skill in adolescence and determine whether this phenotypic correlation is explained by polygenetic overlap. Method: In an Australian population sample of twins and non-twin siblings of European ancestry (734 ≤ N ≤ 1542 [50.7% < F < 66%], mean age = 16.7, range = 11–28 years) from the Brisbane Adolescent Twin Study, mixed-effects models were used to test the association between a dyslexia polygenic score (based on genome-wide association results from a study of 51,800 dyslexics versus >1 million controls) and quantitative cognitive measures. The variance in the cognitive measure explained by the polygenic score was compared to that explained by a reading difficulties phenotype (scores that were lower than 1.5 SD below the mean reading skill) to derive the proportion of the association due to genetic influences. Results: The strongest phenotypic correlations were between poor reading and verbal tests (${R^2}$ R 2 up to 6.2%); visuo-spatial working memory was the only measure that did not show association with poor reading. Dyslexia polygenic scores could completely explain the phenotypic covariance between poor reading and most working memory tasks and were most predictive of performance on a test of arithmetic (${R^2} = 2.9\% $ R 2 = 2.9 %). Conclusion: Shared genetic pathways are thus highlighted for the commonly found association between reading and mathematics abilities, and for the verbal short-term/working memory deficits often observed in dyslexia. Introduction: In females with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), the influence of hyperandrogenism and glucocorticoid supplementation on neurocognition is controversial. Objectives: To identify possible differences in visual working memory and verbal memory in adolescent girls with CAH due to 21-hydroxylase deficiency and matched controls. Moreover, to study if any relationship between variables associated with CAH and the scores of the selected memory tests was present. Material and methods: In total 39 individuals were studied, female adolescents with CAH and age and pubertal stage matched healthy male and female controls (13 in each group). Sociodemographic, clinical, hormonal, and neurocognitive variables were explored. In female adolescents with CAH, variables related to the disease (age at diagnosis, clinical form, time since diagnosis, and glucocorticoid doses) were correlated with the scores obtained for neurocognitive variables. Results: The mean age was 13.9 ± 3.3 years. In female adolescents with CAH the results were worse compared to controls in Free Recall (p = 0.039) and in Visual Memory Span score (p = 0.016). Age at diagnosis was negatively correlated to number of hits (p = 0.04), number recalled backward (p = 0.03), Visual Memory Span test score (p = 0.04) and Total Free Recall (p = 0.04), i.e., memory was worse with later diagnosis. Conclusions: Female adolescents with CAH had worse visual working memory compared to matched controls, but not in verbal memory. Age at diagnosis was negatively associated with the memory tests. Objective Methods Results Interpretation The piriform cortex is considered to be highly epileptogenic. Its resection during epilepsy surgery is a predictor for postoperative seizure freedom in temporal lobe epilepsy. Epilepsy is associated with a dysfunction of the blood–brain barrier. We investigated blood–brain barrier dysfunction in the piriform cortex of people with temporal lobe epilepsy using quantitative T1‐relaxometry.Gadolinium‐based contrast agent was administered ictally and interictally in 37 individuals before undergoing quantitative T1‐relaxometry. Postictal and interictal images were co‐registered, and subtraction maps were created as biomarkers for peri‐ictal (∆qT1interictal‐postictal) and interictal (∆qT1noncontrast‐interictal) blood–brain barrier dysfunction. Values were extracted for the piriform cortex, hippocampus, amygdala, and the whole cortex.In temporal lobe epilepsy (n = 14), ∆qT1noncontrast‐interictal was significantly higher in the piriform cortex than in the whole cortex (p = 0.02). In extratemporal lobe epilepsy (n = 23), ∆qT1noncontrast‐interictal was higher in the hippocampus than in the whole cortex (p = 0.05). Across all individuals (n = 37), duration of epilepsy was correlated with ∆qT1noncontrast‐interictal (ß = 0.001, p < 0.001) in all regions, while the association was strongest in the piriform cortex. Impaired verbal memory was associated with ∆qT1noncontrast‐interictal only in the piriform cortex (p = 0.04). ∆qT1interictal‐postictal did not show differences in any region.Interictal blood–brain barrier dysfunction occurs in the piriform cortex in temporal lobe epilepsy. This dysfunction is linked to longer disease duration and worse cognitive deficits, emphasizing the central role of the piriform cortex in the epileptogenic network of temporal lobe epilepsy. Background: The purpose of the current study was to assess the differences between children with developmental language disorder (DLD) and typically developing (TD) children in their performance of executive functions from working memory, inhibitory control, and cognitive flexibility. Methods: We performed a systematical search of PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, and Web of Science for case control studies (published in English between January 1, 1950, and October 11, 2023) comparing the differences in the performance of executive functions between DLD and TD children. Results: Forty eligible studies were included in the present study (N  =  3,168 participants). In comparison with TD children, DLD children exhibited significantly poorer performances in all six verbal working memory tasks (backward digit recall task, SMD-1.4321, 95% CI-2.2692 to-0.5950; listening recall task, SMD-1.4469, 95% CI-1.7737 to-1.1202; counting recall task, SMD-0.9192, 95% CI-1.4089 to-0.4295; digit recall task, SMD-1.2321, 95% CI-1.4397 to-1.0244; word list recall task, SMD-1.1375, 95% CI-1.5579 to-0.7171; non-word recall task, SMD-1.5355, 95% CI-1.8122 to-1.2589). However, regarding inhibitory control and cognitive flexibility, the differences between DLD and TD children depended on specific circumstances. In subgroup analyses of all verbal working memory tasks, DLD children presented notably lower performance than TD children in both the monolingual English and monolingual non-English groups, and in both the preschooler and school-aged groups. Readers of Chinese characters need to recognize how they are formed in order to identify them correctly. However, our understanding of the cognitive processing of characters in working memory is limited. In Experiment 1, using the character N‐back task paradigm, electrophysiological data were recorded from 26 participants to investigate the effects of the visual feature of radicals on neural activity during the character recognition, updating and maintenance in the N‐back task. Results showed that compound characters required longer response times than single‐component characters. For the event‐related potentials (ERPs), the compound character condition had more negative N2pc and lower P300 amplitudes than the single‐component character condition. In Experiment 2, data from 26 participants were used to analyse the effect of the phonological feature of radicals on neural activity during the character recognition, updating and maintenance in the N‐back task. Results showed that there was a larger P200 in the irregular character condition than in the regular character condition, but there was no difference between the regular and the irregular characters in the N2pc, P300 and slow wave (SW) components. The visual feature and the phonological feature of the radicals may have different effects on the character processing. This study reveals the neural effects of Chinese character radicals on cognitive processing in a working memory task and provides behavioural and electrophysiological evidence for a theoretical model of verbal working memory subprocesses. This study investigates the role of locality (a task/material‐related variable), demographic factors (age, education, and sex), cognitive capacities (verbal working memory [WM], verbal short‐term memory [STM], speed of processing [SOP], and inhibition), and morphosyntactic category (time reference and grammatical aspect) in verb‐related morphosyntactic production (VRMP). A sentence completion task tapping production of time reference and grammatical aspect in local and nonlocal configurations, and cognitive tasks measuring verbal WM capacity, verbal STM capacity, motor SOP, perceptual SOP, and inhibition were administered to 200 neurotypical Greek‐speaking participants, aged between 19 and 80 years. We fitted generalized linear mixed‐effects models and performed path analyses. Significant main effects of locality, age, education, verbal WM capacity, motor SOP, and morphosyntactic category emerged. Production of time reference and aspect did not interact with any of the significant factors (i.e., age, education, verbal WM capacity, motor SOP, and locality), and locality did not interact with any memory system. Path analyses revealed that the relationships between age and VRMP, and between education and VRMP were partly mediated by verbal WM; and the relationship between verbal WM and VRMP was partly mediated by perceptual SOP. Results suggest that subject‐, task/material‐ and morphosyntactic category‐specific factors determine accuracy performance on VRMP; and the effects of age, education, and verbal WM on VRMP are partly indirect. The fact that there was a significant main effect of verbal WM but not of verbal STM on accuracy performance in the VRMP task suggests that it is predominantly the processing component (and not the storage component) of verbal WM that supports VRMP. Lastly, we interpret the results as suggesting that VRMP is also supported by a procedural memory system whose efficiency might be reflected in years of formal education. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives Methods Results Interpretation This study aims to investigate whether alterations in white matter topological networks are associated with focal to bilateral tonic–clonic seizures (FBTCS) in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). Additionally, we investigated the variables contributing to memory impairment in TLE.This cross‐sectional study included 88 unilateral people with TLE (45 left/43 right), and 42 healthy controls. Graph theory analysis was employed to compare the FBTCS (+) group (n = 51) with the FBTCS (−) group (n = 37). The FBTCS (+) group was subcategorized into current‐FBTCS (n = 31) and remote‐FBTCS (n = 20), based on the history of FBTCS within 1 year or longer than 1 year before scanning, respectively. We evaluated the discriminatory power of topological network properties by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. Generalized linear models (GLMs) were employed to investigate variables associated with memory impairment in TLE.Global efficiency (Eg) was significantly reduced in the FBTCS (+) group, especially in the current‐FBTCS subgroup. Greater disruption of regional properties in the ipsilateral occipital and temporal association cortices was observed in the FBTCS (+) group. ROC analysis revealed that Eg, normalized characteristic shortest path length, and nodal efficiency of the ipsilateral middle temporal gyrus could distinguish between FBTCS (+) and FBTCS (−) groups. Additionally, GLMs linked the occurrence of current FBTCS with poorer verbal memory outcomes in TLE.Our study suggests that abnormal networks could be the structural basis of seizure propagation in FBTCS. Verbal working memory (vWM) is an essential limited‐capacity cognitive system that spans the fronto‐parietal network and utilizes the subprocesses of encoding, maintenance, and retrieval. With the recent widespread use of noninvasive brain stimulation techniques, multiple recent studies have examined whether such stimulation may enhance cognitive abilities such as vWM, but the findings to date remain unclear in terms of both behavior and critical brain regions. In the current study, we applied high‐definition direct current stimulation to the left and right parietal cortices of 39 healthy adults in three separate sessions (left anodal, right anodal, and sham). Following stimulation, participants completed a vWM task during high‐density magnetoencephalography (MEG). Significant neural responses at the sensor‐level were imaged using a beamformer and whole‐brain ANOVAs were used to identify the specific neuromodulatory effects of the stimulation conditions on neural responses serving distinct phases of vWM. We found that right stimulation had a faciliatory effect relative to left stimulation and sham on theta oscillations during encoding in the right inferior frontal, while the opposite pattern was observed for left supramarginal regions. Stimulation also had a faciliatory effect on theta in occipital regions and alpha in temporal regions regardless of the laterality of stimulation. In summary, our data suggest that parietal HD‐tDCS both facilitates and interferes with neural responses underlying both the encoding and maintenance phases of vWM. Future studies are warranted to determine whether specific tDCS parameters can be tuned to accentuate the facilitation responses and attenuate the interfering aspects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Transcranial alternate current stimulation (tACS) is a non‐invasive brain stimulation technique that allows entrainment of cerebral oscillations at desired frequencies.Our goal is to evaluate the effects of occipital α‐tACS on cognitive functions and neurophysiological measures in patients with DLB.We conducted a double‐blind, randomized, sham‐controlled, cross‐over clinical trial in 14 participants with DLB. Participants were randomized to receive either α‐tACS (60 minutes of 3 mA peak‐to‐peak stimulation at 12 Hz) or sham stimulation applied over the occipital cortex. Clinical evaluations were performed to assess visuospatial and executive functions, as well as verbal episodic memory. Neurophysiological assessments and EEG recordings were conducted at baseline and following both α‐tACS and sham stimulations.Occipital α‐tACS was safe and well‐tolerated. We observed a significant enhancement in visuospatial abilities and executive functions, but no improvement in verbal episodic memory. We observed an increase in short latency afferent inhibition, a neurophysiological marker indirectly and partially dependent on cholinergic transmission, coinciding with an increase in α power and a decrease in Δ power following α‐tACS stimulation, effects not seen with sham stimulation.This study demonstrates that occipital α‐tACS is safe and enhances visuospatial and executive functions in patients with DLB. Improvements in indirect markers of cholinergic transmission and EEG changes indicate significant neurophysiological engagement. The role of serotonin in human behaviour is informed by approaches which allow in vivo modification of synaptic serotonin. However, characterising the effects of increased serotonin signalling in human models of behaviour is challenging given the limitations of available experimental probes, notably selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Here we use a now-accessible approach to directly increase synaptic serotonin in humans (a selective serotonin releasing agent) and examine its influence on domains of behaviour historically considered core functions of serotonin. Computational techniques, including reinforcement learning and drift diffusion modelling, explain participant behaviour at baseline and after week-long intervention. Reinforcement learning models reveal that increasing synaptic serotonin reduces sensitivity for outcomes in aversive contexts. Furthermore, increasing synaptic serotonin enhances behavioural inhibition, and shifts bias towards impulse control during exposure to aversive emotional probes. These effects are seen in the context of overall improvements in memory for neutral verbal information. Our findings highlight the direct effects of increasing synaptic serotonin on human behaviour, underlining its role in guiding decision-making within aversive and more neutral contexts, and offering implications for longstanding theories of central serotonin function. The aim of this study was to determine the role of duration of preschool attendance and the quality of teacher-child interactions in the executive functions development of preschoolers. The study involved 947 children (51% girls) age 4-7 years (M = 70.3 months; SD = 4.3). The number of children attending kindergarten for less than 1 year was 144; 268 children (28.3%) had attended for 1 to 2 years; and 535 children (56.5%) had attended for more than 2 years. The results showed that the children who attended a group with a high quality of teacher-child interaction for one or more years had better results on verbal work memory, and cognitive and physical inhibitory control than those who attended the same group over a shorter period. Introduction: Adults with Post-COVID-19 Condition (PCC) may show cognitive impairments in attention, processing speed, memory, and executive function. Multimodal programs that combine cognitive training, physical activity and emotional tasks, such as mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs), may offer a suitable alternative for improving PCC treatments. Immersive Virtual Reality (IVR) is a promising technology that can enhance traditional cognitive training, physical activity, and MBIs. The use of IVR technology may increase engagement with these interventions and potentially enhance the individual benefits of cognitive training, exercise and MBIs. The current study evaluated the impact of a multimodal IVR intervention, comparing this with a usual care intervention (control group), in order to assess changes in cognition and mental health in adults with PCC. We also aimed to assess user experience factors such as enjoyment, perceived improvement, and fatigue following each multimodal IVR session within the experimental group. Method: Thirty-one participants with PCC symptoms were assigned to either the experimental group (IVR, n = 15) or the control group (usual care intervention, n = 16) in a quasi-experimental design study. The multimodal IVR intervention consisted of MBI, cognitive training and physical exercise and was delivered in a 60-min group session with 5 participants, twice a week, for 8 weeks (16 sessions in total). Measures of global cognition, attention, processing speed, verbal episodic memory and subjective memory complaints (primary measures), and depressive and anxiety symptoms and fatigue (secondary measures) were assessed at baseline and also after 8 weeks (post-intervention). Results: Mixed between-group (group) and within-group (pre-post assessments) ANOVAs revealed significant group*time interactions in global cognition, simple attention, processing speed, memory and depressive symptoms, with large effect sizes (p < 0.05; partial η² > 0.14). There was also a marginally significant group*time interaction for executive function (p = 0.05). Follow-up analyses comparing pre-and post-intervention outcomes for each group separately showed that the experimental group significantly improved in global cognition, processing speed, memory and depressive symptoms, while the control group showed no significant pre-post changes. Friedman tests showed a significant main effect of time (χ²(2) = 6.609, p = 0.04), with a gradual increase in enjoyment from the first, to the mid, and then to the final session. In addition, perceived improvement scores remained high throughout the intervention, and patient-reported fatigue levels did not fluctuate significantly throughout the intervention. Conclusion: To our knowledge, no previous research has combined cognitive training, physical exercise and MBI using an IVR paradigm in adults with PCC. Despite their inherent limitations, our findings mark a pioneering step toward improving cognition and mental health outcomes in PCC through the innovative use of new technology and multimodal approaches. Background: With the arrival of disease-modifying treatments, it is mandatory to find new cognitive markers that are sensitive to Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology in preclinical stages. Objective: To determine the utility of a newly developed Learning and Associative Memory face test: LAM test. This study examined the relationship between AD cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers and performance on LAM test, and assessed its potential clinical applicability to detect subtle changes in cognitively healthy subjects at risk for AD. Methods: We studied eighty cognitively healthy volunteers from the Valdecilla cohort. 61% were women and the mean age was 67.34 years (±6.416). All participants underwent a lumbar puncture for determination of CSF biomarkers and an extensive neuropsychological assessment, including performance on learning and associative memory indices of the LAM-test after 30 min and after 1 week, and two classic word lists to assess verbal episodic memory: the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT) and the Free and Cued Selective Reminding Test (FCSRT). We analyzed cognitive performance according to amyloid status (A+ versus A–) and to ATN model (A–T–N–; A+T–N–; A+T+N–/A+T+N+). Results: Performance on the LAM-test was significantly correlated with CSF Aβ ratio. A+ participants performed worse on both learning (mean difference = 2.19, p = 0.002) and memory LAM measures than A– (mean difference = 2.19, p = 0.004). A decline in performance was observed along the Alzheimer's continuum, with significant differences between ATN groups. Mnemonic discrimination of highly similar memory traces is affected in healthy aging via changes in hippocampal pattern separation—i.e., the ability of the hippocampus to orthogonalize highly similar neural inputs. The decline of this process leads to a loss of episodic specificity. Because previous studies have almost exclusively tested mnemonic discrimination of visuospatial stimuli (e.g., objects or scenes), less is known about age-related effects on the episodic specificity of semantically similar traces. To address this gap, we designed a task to assess mnemonic discrimination of verbal stimuli as a function of semantic similarity based on word embeddings. Forty young (Mage = 21.7 years) and 40 old adults (Mage = 69.8 years) first incidentally encoded adjective-noun phrases, then performed a surprise recognition test involving exactly repeated and highly similar lure phrases. We found that increasing semantic similarity negatively affected mnemonic discrimination in both age groups, and that compared to young adults, older adults showed worse discrimination at medium levels of semantic similarity. These results indicate that episodic specificity of semantically similar memory traces is affected in aging via less efficient mnemonic operations and strengthen the notion that mnemonic discrimination is a modality-independent process supporting memory specificity across representational domains. Objective To establish the minimal detectable change (MDC) of the subtests that comprise the composite scores from remotely administered Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing (ImPACT) baselines. Method Remote ImPACT baseline data from 172 (male = 45, female = 127) National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I student-athletes from the 2020 and 2021 athletic preseasons were used to calculate the MDC at the 95%, 90%, and 80% confidence intervals (CIs) for all subtest scores used to generate the four core composite scores and the impulse control composite. Results The MDCs for the verbal memory subtests at the 95% CI were 10.31 for word memory percent correct, 4.68 for symbol match total correct hidden, and 18.25 for three letters percentage correct. Visual memory subtest MDCs were 19.03 for design memory total percent correct and 4.90 for XO total correct memory. Visual motor speed subtest MDCs were 18.89 for XO total correct interference and 5.40 for three letters average counted correctly. Reaction time (RT) MDCs were 0.12 for XO average correct, 0.95 for symbol match average correct RT, and 0.28 for color match average correct. Impulse control MDCs were 5.97 for XO total incorrect and 1.15 for color match total commissions. One-way repeated measures MANOVA, repeated measures ANOVAs, and Wilcoxon signed-ranks test all suggested no significant difference between any subtests across two remote ImPACT baselines. Conclusions The ImPACT subtest scores did not significantly change between athletic seasons. Objective: As programs expand globally, epilepsy surgery is becoming increasingly available as an effective treatment for some people with medically intractable seizures. Prospective candidates require careful neuropsychological evaluation and follow-up. The aim of this study was to examine the sex differences in neuropsychological function in presurgical presentation and postoperative outcomes in people with temporal lobe epilepsy referred for epilepsy surgery. Methods: Three hundred and seventy-two patients (202 Female; 170 Male) with a homogenous underlying pathology (hippocampal sclerosis) underwent a preoperative assessment on tests of intellectual, language, and memory function and were followed up one year after undergoing a unilateral temporal lobe resection; n = 169 Right (RTL), n = 203 Left (LTL). Results: There was no impact of sex or laterality of surgery on seizure outcome; 84% of males and 80% of females were seizure free at follow-up. Before surgery, sex effects were evident on tests of verbal memory with females performing better than males. Declines in verbal memory function following surgery were greater in females than males. Being female had a stronger association with postoperative decline on immediate prose recall (partial eta squared η2 = 0.029), than side of surgery (η2 = 0.018) albeit with a small effect size. Conclusions: There are subtle but significant sex differences in the neuropsychological profiles of people with temporal lobe epilepsy, before and following surgery. Whilst females generally perform better than males on tests of verbal memory function before surgery they demonstrate greater post-operative declines on these measures following surgery. OBJECTIVE: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) has been linked to dementia. In this study, we examined the association of MetS with neuroimaging and cognition in dementia-free adults, offering insight into the impact of MetS on brain health prior to dementia onset. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We included 37,395 dementia-free adults from the UK Biobank database. MetS was defined as having at least three of the following components: larger waist circumference; elevated levels of triglycerides, blood pressure, HbA1c; or reduced HDL cholesterol levels. Multivariable-adjusted linear regression was used to assess associations of MetS with structural neuroimaging and cognitive domains. RESULTS: MetS was associated with lower total brain (standardized β: −0.06; 95% CI −0.08, −0.04), gray matter (β: −0.10; 95% CI −0.12, −0.08) and hippocampal (for left side, β: −0.03, 95% CI −0.05, −0.01; for right side, β: −0.04, 95% CI −0.07, −0.02) volumes, and greater white matter hyperintensity (WMH) volume (β: 0.08; 95% CI 0.06, 0.11). Study participants with MetS performed poorer on cognitive tests of working memory (β: −0.10; 95% CI −0.13, −0.07), verbal declarative memory (β: −0.08; 95% CI −0.11, −0.05), processing speed (β: −0.06; 95% CI −0.09, −0.04), verbal and numerical reasoning (β: −0.07; 95% CI −0.09, −0.04), nonverbal reasoning (β: −0.03; 95% CI −0.05, −0.01), and on tests of executive function, where higher scores indicated poorer performance (β: 0.05; 95% CI 0.03, 0.08). More MetS components were also associated with less brain volume, greater WMH, and poorer cognition across all domains. CONCLUSIONS: MetS was associated poorer brain health in dementia-free adults, characterized by less brain volume, greater vascular pathology, and poorer cognition. Background and objective: Autoimmune encephalitis (AE) is often associated with clinically significant memory impairment. This study aimed to evaluate memory in a cross-sectional prospective AE cohort using multiple memory paradigms. Methods: 52 patients (50% seropositive) meeting Graus criteria for possible AE were prospectively recruited between October 2019 and August 202. A comprehensive examination of memory was performed, including tests of supraspan verbal memory (list learning), logicosemantic memory (story learning), figural memory (learning of geometric designs), and verbal associative learning (verbal paired associates). Memory scores were compared to demographically adjusted normative data. Pattern analysis was conducted to assist in the identification of patterns in memory performances. Results: Mean memory scores were not significantly below the normative mean. At an individual patient level, over 20% of the cohort exhibited impaired delayed figural memory, supraspan verbal memory learning and recall. Observed performances were significantly below expected performance for story learning (p = 0.017) and recall (p = 0.003), figural recall (p < 0.0001), initial acquisition (p < 0.001) and final acquisition of a list (p < 0.001) and all delayed recall measures of the list (p < 0.00001). 54.76% of patients exhibited intact psychometrics, and 16 distinct patterns of impairment emerged, indicating variability in memory outcomes. Discussion: While statistical evidence for memory impairment did not emerge at an aggregate level, a proportion of patients present with evidence of abnormal memory performance on psychometrics. Variability in impaired memory measures argues for an individualised patient-focused approach to clinical assessment in AE. Background: While many studies have examined relationships of neuroimaging variables to cognitive measures in multiple sclerosis (MS), longitudinal studies are lacking. The relationship of cognitive changes to neuroradiological changes in MS is thus incompletely understood. The present study systematically reviews all studies reporting a relationship between MRI changes and cognitive changes after at least one year of follow-up. Method: An extensive and methodical search of online databases was conducted to identify qualified studies until August 2023. Among various cognitive tests and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) measures, Symbol Digit Modalities Test (SDMT), Paced Auditory Serial Addition Test (PASAT), verbal fluency, T2 lesion volume (T2LV), white matter lesion volume (WML), and grey matter volume (GMV) qualified for inclusion in a meta-analysis investigating the association of cognitive changes to neuroradiological changes. Results: We identified 35 studies that explored the link between MRI changes and changes in cognitive outcomes. Of these, twenty studies (57.14%) investigated the association between SDMT/PASAT and MRI metrics. Eleven studies (31.42%) focused on the relationship between MRI metrics and verbal learning and memory, while ten studies (28.57%) reported associations with visuospatial learning and memory. Furthermore, eight studies (22.85%) analyzed the correlation between verbal fluency and MRI measures. Only 5 were eligible for inclusion in the meta-analysis. The meta-analysis evaluated correlations between SDMT/PASAT and GMV (rs = 0.67, 95% CI 0.44–0.91), and verbal fluency and T2LV (rs = 0.35, 95% CI 0.09–0.60). Conclusion: In this rigorously conducted systematic review, we found a significant association of cognitive changes, specifically SDMT/PASAT and verbal fluency, to changes in T2LV and atrophy in individuals with MS. Divergent thinking tasks, which require participants to generate as many creative ideas as possible, elicit a serial order effect: Ideas generated later tend to be more original. This suggests that generating more ideas is beneficial. However, past research regarding the serial order effect has largely overlooked the interplay between serial order and fluency: Is it always true that more ideas mean higher originality? In this study, 595 participants completed four divergent thinking tasks; originality and degree of elaboration were scored for each idea, and multilevel analyses were used to model both originality and elaboration as a function of serial order and total fluency. Later ideas were found to be more original, replicating the serial order effect, but there was an antagonistic effect of sequence length: The ideas of participants with lower fluency tended to be both more original and more elaborate, regardless of serial position. In sum, generating more ideas actually came with lower originality for each idea, despite a serial order effect. These results highlight the role of time and effort for elaboration of an original idea, and also lead to recommending alternate scoring methods in divergent thinking tasks, such as "best-two ideas" or "count of good ideas." Background: The Free and Cued Selective Reminding Test (FCSRT), assessing verbal episodic memory with controlled learning and semantic cueing, has been recommended for detecting the genuine encoding and storage deficits characterizing AD-related memory disorders. Objective: The present study aims at investigating the ability of FCSRT in predicting cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) evidence of amyloid-β positivity in subjects with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) and exploring its associations with amyloidopathy, tauopathy and neurodegeneration biomarkers. Methods: 120 aMCI subjects underwent comprehensive neurological and neuropsychological examinations, including the FCSRT assessment, and CSF collection; CSF Aβ42/40 ratio, p-tau181, and total-tau quantification were conducted by an automated CLEIA method on Lumipulse G1200. Based on the Aβ42/40 ratio value, subjects were classified as either A+ or A–. Results: All FCSRT subitem scores were significantly lower in A+ group and significantly predicted the amyloid-β status, with Immediate Total Recall (ITR) being the best predictor. No significant correlations were found between FCSRT and CSF biomarkers in the A– aMCI group, while in the A+ aMCI group, all FCSRT subitem scores were negatively correlated with CSF p-tau181 and total-tau, but not with the Aβ42/40 ratio. Conclusions: FCSRT confirms its validity as a tool for the diagnosis of AD, being able to predict the presence of amyloid-β deposition with high specificity. The associations between FCSRT subitem scores and CSF p-tau-181 and total-tau levels in aMCI due to AD could further encourage the clinical use of this simple and cost-effective test in the evaluation of individuals with aMCI. Testosterone levels sharply rise during the transition from childhood to adolescence and these changes are known to be associated with changes in human brain structure. During this same developmental window, there are also robust changes in the neural oscillatory dynamics serving verbal working memory processing. Surprisingly, whereas many studies have investigated the effects of chronological age on the neural oscillations supporting verbal working memory, none have probed the impact of endogenous testosterone levels during this developmental period. Using a sample of 89 youth aged 6–14 years‐old, we collected salivary testosterone samples and recorded magnetoencephalography during a modified Sternberg verbal working memory task. Significant oscillatory responses were identified and imaged using a beamforming approach and the resulting maps were subjected to whole‐brain ANCOVAs examining the effects of testosterone and sex, controlling for age, during verbal working memory encoding and maintenance. Our primary results indicated robust testosterone‐related effects in theta (4–7 Hz) and alpha (8–14 Hz) oscillatory activity, controlling for age. During encoding, females exhibited weaker theta oscillations than males in right cerebellar cortices and stronger alpha oscillations in left temporal cortices. During maintenance, youth with greater testosterone exhibited weaker alpha oscillations in right parahippocampal and cerebellar cortices, as well as regions across the left‐lateralized language network. These results extend the existing literature on the development of verbal working memory processing by showing region and sex‐specific effects of testosterone, and are the first results to link endogenous testosterone levels to the neural oscillatory activity serving verbal working memory, above and beyond the effects of chronological age. Research suggests a potential of gamma oscillation entrainment for enhancing memory in Alzheimer's disease and healthy subjects. Gamma entrainment can be accomplished with oscillatory electrical, but also sensory stimulation. However, comparative studies between sensory stimulation and transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) effects on memory processes are lacking. This study examined the effects of rhythmic gamma auditory stimulation (rAS) and temporal gamma‐tACS on verbal long‐term memory (LTM) and working memory (WM) in 74 healthy individuals. Participants were assigned to two groups according to the stimulation techniques (rAS or tACS). Memory was assessed in three experimental blocks, in which each participant was administered with control, 40, and 60 Hz stimulation in counterbalanced order. All interventions were well‐tolerated, and participants reported mostly comparable side effects between real stimulation (40 and 60 Hz) and the control condition. LTM immediate and delayed recall remained unaffected by stimulations, while immediate recall intrusions decreased during 60 Hz stimulation. Notably, 40 Hz interventions improved WM compared to control stimulations. These results highlight the potential of 60 and 40 Hz temporal cortex stimulation for reducing immediate LTM recall intrusions and improving WM performance, respectively, probably due to the entrainment of specific gamma oscillations in the auditory cortex. The results also shed light on the comparative effects of these neuromodulation tools on memory functions, and their potential applications for cognitive enhancement and in clinical trials. Cannabigerol (CBG) is a phytocannabinoid increasing in popularity, with preclinical research indicating it has anxiolytic and antidepressant effects. However, there are no published clinical trials to corroborate these findings in humans. The primary objective of this study was to examine acute effects of CBG on anxiety, stress, and mood. Secondary objectives were to examine whether CBG produces subjective drug effects or motor and cognitive impairments. A double-blind, placebo-controlled cross-over field trial was conducted with 34 healthy adult participants. Participants completed two sessions (with a one-week washout period) via Zoom. In each, they provided ratings of anxiety, stress, mood, and subjective drug effects prior to double-blind administration of 20 mg hemp-derived CBG or placebo tincture (T0). These ratings were collected again after participants ingested the product and completed an online survey (T1), the Trier Social Stress Test (T2), a verbal memory test and the DRUID impairment app (T3). Relative to placebo, there was a significant main effect of CBG on overall reductions in anxiety as well as reductions in stress at T1. CBG also enhanced verbal memory relative to placebo. Objective Methods Results Significance Anterior temporal lobe resection (ATLR) effectively controls seizures in medically refractory temporal lobe epilepsy but risks significant episodic memory decline. Beyond 1 year postoperatively, the influence of preoperative clinical factors on episodic memory and long‐term network plasticity remain underexplored. Ten years post‐ATLR, we aimed to determine biomarkers of successful memory network reorganization and establish presurgical features' lasting impact on memory function.Twenty‐five ATLR patients (12 left‐sided) and 10 healthy controls underwent a memory‐encoding functional magnetic resonance imaging paradigm alongside neuropsychometry 10 years postsurgery. Generalized psychophysiological interaction analyses modeled network functional connectivity of words/faces remembered, seeding from the medial temporal lobes (MTLs). Differences in successful memory connectivity were assessed between controls and left/right ATLR. Multivariate regressions and mixed‐effect models probed preoperative phenotypes' effects on long‐term memory outcomes.Ten years post‐ATLR, lower baseline functioning (verbal and performance intelligence quotient) and a focal memory impairment preoperatively predicted worse long‐term memory outcomes. Poorer verbal memory was significantly associated with longer epilepsy duration and earlier onset age. Relative to controls, successful word and face encoding involved increased functional connectivity from both or remnant MTL seeds and contralesional parahippocampus/hippocampus after left/right ATLR. Irrespective of surgical laterality, successful memory encoding correlated with increased MTL‐seeded connectivity to frontal (bilateral insula, right anterior cingulate), right parahippocampal, and bilateral fusiform gyri. Ten years postsurgery, better memory performance was correlated with contralateral frontal plasticity, which was disrupted with longer epilepsy duration.Our findings underscore the enduring nature of functional network reorganizations to provide long‐term cognitive support. Ten years post‐ATLR, successful memory formation featured stronger connections near resected areas and contralateral regions. The present study assessed whether dementia worry is associated with adults’ subjective cognitive difficulties, and whether any associations are moderated by age. Participants were 477 adults aged 18–90 years. They completed standard, subjective measures of dementia worry and everyday cognitive difficulties (i.e. attention, language, verbal and visual-spatial memory, and visual-perceptual ability). Moderated regression analyses included dementia worry as a predictor of specific cognitive difficulties, and age as a moderator. Covariates included gender, trait cognitive and somatic anxiety, general aging-related anxiety, depression, stress, mental health treatment status, and health status. Greater overall dementia worry, and specifically more frequent dementia worry, were both associated with greater attentional difficulty in middle-aged and older adults, but not in young adults. Cognitions about developing dementia in reaction to memory lapses were also associated with greater cognitive difficulties across the adult lifespan for multiple cognitive domains. Results highlight a robust relationship between dementia worry and subjective attentional difficulties, especially in middle-aged and older adults. Worry frequency is also more influential with adult aging. A cognitive or meta-cognitive mechanism may underlie subjective cognitive concerns across the adult lifespan. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Leon Modena's Lev ha-Aryeh (seventeenth-century Italy) has long been recognized as the first Hebrew treatise on mnemonics. This article points to an earlier source: gate 90 of Isaac Arama's 'Akedat Yits@hak. Arama not only describes the locative memory palace developed by Roman orators and popular throughout Latin Christendom. He contends that the original memory palace was given by God to the Israelites and consists in none other than the central prayers of Jewish liturgy, the Shema and ve-ahavta. On Arama's reading, the Shema and ve-ahavta are designed as a sort of verbal memory palace to help store and recollect all the commandments. In addition to introducing Arama's memory device and adaptation of classical ars memorativa into Hebrew, I show how Arama's interest in memory reflects a departure from earlier trends in medieval Hebrew philosophical literature. Surveying Hebrew philosophical literature across Spain and southern France from the thirteenth through mid-fifteenth centuries, I argue that although Jewish authors conceptualized memory as a faculty and internal sense according to the framework of Aristotelian psychology, they did not seem to be especially interested in the subject of memory as compared with their Christian peers. I conclude by hypothesizing what may have precipitated renewed Jewish interest in memory in late fifteenth-century Spain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Neuropsychological studies have demonstrated that meningioma patients frequently exhibit cognitive deficits before surgery and show only limited improvement after surgery. Combining neuropsychological with functional imaging measurements can shed more light on the impact of surgery on cognitive brain function. We aimed to evaluate whether surgery affects cognitive brain activity in such a manner that it may mask possible changes in cognitive functioning measured by neuropsychological tests. Twenty‐three meningioma patients participated in a fMRI measurement using a verbal working memory task as well as three neuropsychological tests focused on working memory, just before and 3 months after surgery. A region of interest based fMRI analysis was used to examine cognitive brain activity at these timepoints within the central executive network and default mode network. Neuropsychological assessment showed impaired cognitive functioning before as well as 3 months after surgery. Neuropsychological test scores, in‐scanner task performance as well as brain activity within the central executive and default mode network were not significantly different between both timepoints. Our results indicate that surgery does not significantly affect cognitive brain activity in meningioma patients the first few months after surgery. Therefore, the lack of cognitive improvement after surgery is not likely the result of compensatory processes in the brain. Cognitive deficits that are already present before surgery appear to be persistent after surgery and a considerable recovery period. Our study shows potential leads that comprehensive cognitive evaluation can be of added value so that cognitive functioning may become a more prominent factor in clinical decision making. Infiltrative non-GBM gliomas are common primary intracranial malignancies, and postoperative adjuvant radiotherapy is recommended for most adult patients diagnosed with this disease to enhance local control and prolong intracranial progression-free survival (PFS). However, RT-related neurocognitive function (NCF) consequences should not be ignored. Early neurocognitive decline principally includes episodic memory, associated significantly with functions of the hippocampus. This prospective study aims to investigate the impact of adjuvant brain irradiation on neurocognitive performances and relevant oncological outcomes. Twenty-five patients with intracranial infiltrative non-GBM gliomas were enrolled when postoperative adjuvant RT was recommended. All recruited patients should receive baseline brain magnetic resonance imaging, and neuropsychological assessments before and 4 months after the RT course. A battery of neuropsychological measures, mainly including executive functions, memory, psychomotor speed and visuoconstructive ability, was used to evaluate NCFs of interest. Analyzing the delta values between post-irradiation and baseline NCF scores, we observed a robust trend reflecting cognitive stabilization rather than deterioration in almost all NCF. Both verbal and visual memory functions exhibited significant differences in the corresponding scaled scores (Z = −2.722, p =.006, regarding verbal memory; Z = −2.246, p =.025, concerning non-verbal memory). Moreover, patients' neuropsychological performances associated with psychomotor speed and executive functions also disclosed a tendency toward stabilization/improvement. This prospective study demonstrated that patients with infiltrative non-GBM exhibited a marked tendency toward neurocognitive stabilization after receiving postoperative adjuvant RT. To assess whether performance in attention and executive functions evaluated with the Epitrack screening tool before surgery can differentiate memory and quality of life (QOL) profiles, and detect different post-surgical change patterns in these variables in patients with epilepsy. This is a longitudinal study. Seventy-seven patients with drug-resistant epilepsy (mean age = 37.91) underwent a neuropsychological assessment before and one year after surgery. Epitrack, a screening tool that exclusively evaluates attention and executive functioning, was administered in the pre-surgical assessment, and verbal and visual memory and QOL were assessed before and after surgery. Patients with impaired Epitrack performance had poorer verbal and visual memory than those with intact Epitrack performance, regardless of the time point (for all, p < 0.0001). They also showed a post-surgical decline in immediate verbal recall (p = 0.04) and discriminability (p = 0.001). Patients with intact Epitrack performance did not exhibit this decline. Epitrack total score significantly contributed to 13 and 11% of the variance of post-surgical changes in immediate verbal recall and discriminability, respectively. Epitrack groups did not differ in QOL profiles or changes, but post-surgical immediate verbal recall improvements were related to post-surgical QOL improvements. Our findings underline the utility of Epitrack screening tool to detect different patterns of verbal and visual memory dysfunction, as well as to predict post-surgical verbal memory decline in patients with drug-resistant epilepsy. Injury surveillance data indicate that collegiate athletes are at greater risk for lower extremity (LE) injuries following sports‐related concussion (SRC). While the association between SRC and LE injury appears to be clinically relevant up to 1‐year post‐SRC, little evidence has been provided to determine possible mechanistic rationales. Thus, we aimed to compare collegiate athletes with a history of SRC to matched controls on biomechanical and cognitive performance measures associated with LE injury risk. Athletes with a history of SRC (n = 20) and matched controls (n = 20) performed unanticipated bilateral land‐and‐cut tasks and cognitive assessments. Group‐based analyses (ANOVA) and predictive modeling (C5.0 decision tree algorithm) were used to compare group differences on biomechanical and cognitive measures. Collegiate athletes with a history of SRC demonstrated approximately six degrees less peak knee flexion on both dominant (p = 0.03, d = 0.71) and nondominant (p = 0.02, d = 0.78) limbs during the land‐and‐cut tasks compared to controls. Verbal Memory, knee flexion, and Go/No Go total score (C5.0 decision tree algorithm) were identified as the strongest indicators of previous SRC injury history. Reduced knee flexion during sport‐specific land‐and‐cut tasks may be a mechanism for increased LE injury risk in athletes with a history of SRC. There appears to be multiple biomechanical and cognitive predictors for identifying previous SRC in collegiate athletes, providing evidence to support a multifactorial SRC management strategy to reduce future injury risk. This study investigated the role of language-related abilities in emotion comprehension among young people with non-specific intellectual developmental disorders (NS-IDDs). Forty children and adolescents with NS-IDDs completed tasks assessing emotion comprehension, receptive vocabulary, verbal reasoning skills, and verbal working memory. Results showed that emotion comprehension was better predicted by comprehension of abstract words and verbal working memory, and that these two predictors were themselves predicted by verbal reasoning skills. These results therefore suggest a link between emotion understanding and verbal reasoning, which could be mediated by abstract vocabulary and verbal working memory. Background: Patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) patients report subjective memory impairment (SMI) escaping routine neuropsychological testing. Accelerated long-term forgetting (ALF) refers to above average loss of information over an extended period of time (e.g., 7 days). This study investigates ALF in mildly affected MS patients and relates long-term memory performance to SMI. Methods: This prospective study included 30 patients with early MS (mean EDSS ± SD = 1.1 ± 0.9) and 30 healthy controls (HC) matched for age and education. Participants underwent ALF testing [word list (RAVLT), geometric figure (RCF), logical memory (WMS)] at three time points (baseline, 30 min, 7 days). Cognition (Montreal Cognitive Assessment), depression, SMI and fatigue were assessed. The primary outcome (PO) was defined as the quotient of the 7-day score and the 30-min memory score for the verbal (RAVLT, WMS) and figural (RCF) memory tests. The study was approved by the local ethics committee and is registered in the German Register of Clinical Studies (DRKS00025791). Results: MS patients showed impairments in PORAVLT (MS 0.66 ± 0.13 vs HC 0.82 ± 0.16; p < 0.001), whereas POWMS (MS 0.88 ± 0.15 vs HC 1.01 ± 0.12; p = 0.02) showed only a tendency. Regression analysis revealed significant associations for PORAVLT and fatigue (p = 0.034), and PORAVLT and SMI (p = 0.01) in patients but not in HC. Conclusion: The ALF test quantifies SMI in MS-patients. With fatigue as a relevant associated factor, this fills the gap in objectifying SMI in MS for diagnostic purposes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: We aimed to analyze potentially prognostic factors which could have influence on postoperative seizure, neuropsychological and psychiatric outcome in a cohort of patients with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) due to hippocampal sclerosis (HS) after selective amygdalohippocampectomy (SAHE) via transsylvian approach. Methods: Clinical variables of 171 patients with drug-resistant MTLE with HS (88 females) who underwent SAHE between 1994 and 2019 were evaluated using univariable and multivariable logistic regression models, to investigate which of the explanatory parameters can best predict the outcome. Results: At the last available follow-up visit 12.3 ± 6.3 years after surgery 114 patients (67.9%) were seizure-free. Left hemispheric MTLE was associated with worse postoperative seizure outcome at first year after surgery (OR = 0.54, p = 0.01), female sex—with seizure recurrence at years 2 (OR = 0.52, p = 0.01) and 5 (OR = 0.53, p = 0.025) and higher number of preoperative antiseizure medication trials—with seizure recurrence at year 2 (OR = 0.77, p = 0.0064), whereas patients without history of traumatic brain injury had better postoperative seizure outcome at first year (OR = 2.08, p = 0.0091). All predictors lost their predictive value in long-term course. HS types had no prognostic influence on outcome. Patients operated on right side performed better in verbal memory compared to left (VLMT 1-5 p < 0.001, VLMT 7 p = 0.001). Depression occurred less frequently in seizure-free patients compared to non-seizure-free patients (BDI-II Z = − 2.341, p = 0.019). Conclusions: SAHE gives an improved chance of achieving good postoperative seizure, psychiatric and neuropsychological outcome in patients with in MTLE due to HS. It is commonly assumed that inner speech—the experience of thought as occurring in a natural language—is a human universal. Recent evidence, however, suggests that the experience of inner speech in adults varies from near constant to nonexistent. We propose a name for a lack of the experience of inner speech—anendophasia—and report four studies examining some of its behavioral consequences. We found that adults who reported low levels of inner speech (N = 46) had lower performance on a verbal working memory task and more difficulty performing rhyme judgments compared with adults who reported high levels of inner speech (N = 47). This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of individualized occupational therapy (IOT) plus group occupational therapy (GOT) as standard care for cognition compared to GOT alone, and to determine which IOT component has the greatest effect on cognitive outcome in patients with schizophrenia. This study was conducted at 14 clinical sites across Japan and enrolled recently hospitalized patients with schizophrenia. The IOT consisted of motivational interview, self-monitoring, individualized visits, craft activities, individualized psychoeducation, and discharge planning. Among the 68 patients who were randomized to the GOT + IOT group (n = 34) and GOT alone group (n = 34), 67 completed the trial (GOT + IOT group, n = 34; GOT alone group, n = 33). There were significant improvements in change from baseline to post-treatment between the groups in verbal memory, working memory, verbal fluency, attention, executive function domains, and the composite score of the Brief Assessment of Cognition in Schizophrenia (BACS). The BACS composite score was significantly associated with the number of craft activity sessions. The addition of IOT to GOT has a favorable feasibility profile and efficacy for cognition in schizophrenia. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the language, cognitive, and speech in noise (SiN) perception abilities of children with cochlear implants (CIs) to those of their peers with NH by grouping them according to their implantation period (12–18 months/19–24 months) and unilateral/bilateral CI use. Methods: The sample comprised 50 children with cochlear implants (CIs) and 20 children with normal hearing (NH), ages 6–9 years. Children's language, cognitive, and speech in noise (SiN) perception skills were assessed. Results: Children with CIs between 12 and 18 months and 19 and 24 months performed more poorly than children with NH on language, verbal memory (VM), verbal-short-term memory (V-STM), verbal working memory (V-WM), rapid naming, and speech in noise (SiN) perception abilities measures (p < 0.001). In addition, children with CIs between 19 and 24 months performed worse on rapid naming and V-WM tasks than children with CIs between 12 and 18 months (p < 0.017). Children with unilateral and bilateral CI performed more poorly than children with NH on language, VM, V-STM, V-WM, rapid naming, and SiN perception abilities assessments (p < 0.001). Additionally children with unilateral CI users performed poorly than children with bilateral CI users on SiN perception (p < 0.017). Conclusions: In children with congenital hearing loss (CHL), cochlear implantation between 12 and 18 months or sequential bilateral implantation is not sufficient for these children to perform like their NH peers in language, cognitive, and SiN perception abilities. The logopenic variant of primary progressive aphasia (lvPPA) is characterized mainly by anomia, production of phonological errors, and impairment in repetition of sentences. The functional origin of these language impairments is mainly attributed to the breakdown of phonological short-term memory. The present study examined the effects of phonological short-term memory impairment on language processing in lvPPA. In two studies, 11 participants with lvPPA and 11 healthy control participants were presented with repetition tasks in which the type and length of stimuli and the mode of administration were manipulated. Study 1 aimed to examine the influence of length and lexicality (words vs. pseudowords) on immediate and delayed repetition, whereas Study 2 aimed to examine the influence of length, syntactic complexity (nominalized vs. pronominalized sentences), and serial position on immediate sentence repetition. Study 1 showed that participants' performance with lvPPA was impaired only on immediate repetition of five-syllable pseudowords and on delayed repetition of words and pseudowords. Study 2 showed that participants' performance with lvPPA was impaired in the repetition of nominalized sentences where a recency effect was observed. Repetition of pronominalized sentences was also impaired in the lvPPA group. This study provides additional support for arguments regarding phonological short-term memory as a cause of language impairment in lvPPA. Clinically, the results of the study suggest that instruments for assessing repetition ability in lvPPA should include not only lists of short or long nominalized sentences, but also delayed repetition of words and pseudowords and pronominalized sentences. Concrete planning for future care needs may positively impact older adults' subsequent mental health and quality of life. However, the cognitive factors that facilitate concrete planning among Black and White older adults are still poorly understood. We investigated whether there are significant differences between Black (n = 159) and White (n = 262) older adults in concrete planning and explored racial differences in the relationship between verbal and nonverbal episodic memory and concrete planning. Results revealed that Blacks showed lower engagement in concrete planning and lower scores than Whites on each verbal and nonverbal memory task. For Blacks, but not Whites, verbal memory and nonverbal memory performance predicted concrete planning with higher nonverbal memory relating to less concrete planning and higher verbal memory associated with more concrete planning. Our findings suggest racial differences exist in how episodic verbal and nonverbal memory affect concrete planning, a crucial factor for older adults' preparation for future care.
