Objective: To examine the recent studies on the functional near-infrared spectrum with the verbal fluency task in patients with schizophrenia by scoping review, which often rapidly identifies and integrates evidence from diverse literature. Methods: The PubMed, Web of Science, CNKI, VIP, and Wanfang databases were searched systematically for reports of functional near-infrared spectroscopy using the verbal fluency task in schizophrenia patients, published from January 2014 to June 2021. This scoping review followed the latest Joanna Briggs Institute guidance and checklist. Results: Twenty-three studies met the inclusion criteria. 70% of studies adopted the letter fluency task, and five explored the classification approaches of a biological marker of schizophrenia. There was no consistent correlation between some clinical variables and special cortical subregions. Conclusion: The prefrontal dysfunction has been demonstrated by the functional near-infrared spectroscopy studies using the verbal fluency task and may be a candidate biological marker for schizophrenia.
