Unmanned vehicles (UVs) have become increasingly important in various scenarios of civil and military operations. The present work aims at the conceptual design of a modular Amphibious Unmanned Ground Vehicle (A-UGV) that can be easily adapted for different types of land and/or water missions with low monetary cost (EUR < 5 k, without sensors). Basing the design on the needs highlighted in the 2021 review of the Strategic Directive of the Portuguese Navy, the necessary specifications and requirements are established for two mission scenarios. Then, a market research analysis focused on vehicles currently available and their technological advances is conducted to identify existing UV solutions and respective characteristics/capabilities of interest to the current work. To study and define the geometry of the hull and the configuration of the A-UGV itself, preliminary computational structural and fluid analyses are carried out to ensure it complies with the specifications initially established. As a result, one obtains a fully electric vehicle with approximate dimensions of 1050 × 670 × 450 mm (length–width–height), enabled with 6 × 6 traction capable of reaching 20 km/h on land, which possesses amphibious capabilities of independent propulsion in water up to 8 kts and an estimated autonomy of over 60 min. In this study, an electric vehicle (EV) dynamic model is devised that amalgamates mechanical design aspects—such as aerodynamic effects, tire friction, and vehicle frontal area—with crucial components of the electrical infrastructure, including the electric motor, power converters, and battery systems. Verification of the model is executed through a comprehensive multidisciplinary analysis utilizing CATIA, ANSYS Electromagnetics, ANSYS Fluent, and MATLAB–Simulink tools, which are applied to evaluate two alternative lightweight EV prototypes. The process involves initial computations of critical inputs for the dynamic model, including aerodynamic lift (C1), drag coefficients (Cd), and frontal area (Af). Subsequent stages entail the detailed design and analysis of a 2 kW brushless permanent magnet electric motor in ANSYS Electromagnetics to map efficiency contours across various speed–torque values. Integration of these parameters into a MATLAB–Simulink dynamic model, connected with motor drive inverter and battery models, allows for simulation-based energy consumption analysis under race track slope profiles. Remarkably, the findings underscore the considerable impact of neglected parameters on energy consumption, often exceeding fifty percent of the total. Consequently, an energy-efficient EV prototype is manufactured and rigorously tested under specified drive conditions, affirming the validation of the comprehensive multidisciplinary EV dynamic model. Emergency ambulances play a vital role in medical rescue and patient transportation, but their transit can impact patient health due to vehicle dynamic forces and vibrations. This study evaluates patient transport conditions on a stretcher subjected to vertical vibration excitation from road unevenness. Using an eight-degree-of-freedom numerical model, we analyze the construction parameters of a medical stretcher's support and vehicle suspension. Actual experimental data from an emergency vehicle were utilized to assess the vibration conditions experienced by both the stretcher and the ambulance floor. The model is adjusted based on measurements, specifically targeting the main vibration modes. The investigation involves determining temporal responses for vertical accelerations and characterizing vibration modal parameters under various transportation conditions. Notably, several system natural frequencies fall within the range of human body frequencies, making them susceptible to mechanical excitation, particularly in the human neck, abdomen, and spine. A sensitivity analysis underscores the influence of medical stretcher support structure parameters on patient comfort. Increasing support stiffness, which alters the stretcher's natural frequency, and damping coefficient reduce vibration propagation between the vehicle and the patient. Additionally, the research predicts the model's dynamic behavior on roads with low-quality pavement, indicating vibrational amplitudes that could potentially be discomforting and unhealthy for individuals. With the gradual expansion of the market for small-scale, multi-variety, small-volume production electric vehicles, the need arises to develop appropriate crash stability evaluation standards and techniques. This study focuses on utilizing a space frame suitable for small-volume production vehicles for design and manufacturing purposes. The research involves measuring acceleration values and comparing them between computer simulation crash analysis and crash tests conducted on an actual fixed wall frontal crash scenario. The collision analysis and test were performed with a collision speed of 50 km/h, and the measured acceleration values were compared with those obtained from finite element analysis. The results of the crash analysis and crash test indicate that in both cases, the main frame experienced breakage, with the analysis results aligning closely with the actual test outcomes. Although some performance conditions led to differences in acceleration values, overall, the trends exhibited similarities between the crash analysis and crash test. Based on these findings, computer simulation can be employed as a substitute for the crash analysis vehicle certification method when modifying the certification method for low-scale production vehicles. This research contributes to developing crash stability evaluation standards and techniques for small-scale production of electric vehicles. The study demonstrates the feasibility of utilizing computer simulation as an effective tool for crash analysis vehicle certification, providing valuable insights for future certification methods and improving the efficiency of small-volume production vehicle evaluation.

This project involved the development of a COVID-19 Risk-mitigating Vehicle Design (CRVD) typology to summarize and analyze the wide variety of vehicle design strategies that have been implemented or suggested to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission among workers and passengers in shared and pooled vehicles. Public transit and shared mobility service operators can use the CRVD typology as a reference and guide to aid decision-making in their continued response to the pandemic as well as for future planning. The typology also serves as a launching point for further innovation and research to evaluate the effectiveness of CRVD strategies and their relationship to user preferences and travel behavior, again both within and beyond the current context. This research also explored layperson and expert perceptions of the identified CRVD strategies. By combining these perspectives, a holistic frame can be created to start to develop optimal vehicle design solutions that would be both objectively effective in preventing COVID-19 spread and making travelers feel safe. Ultimately, the hope is that this research can help support a safe return to shared and pooled travel in the wake of the pandemic and contribute to a better—more equitable, sustainable, and enjoyable—mobility future.

The continuous demand and fuel depletion in the automobile industries cause a reduction in fuel consumption, especially in a car which is a classic problem to focus on vehicle body design. The formation of drag force in the car body demands tractive force and significantly affects the engine performance and fuel consumption rate which is not advisable for enhancing aerodynamic efficiency. This paper discusses the methodology to reduce the fuel consumption rate in hatchback cars using a ‘basebleed method’. The hatchback car model with and without basebleed is numerically simulated for the various speed to study the aerodynamic coefficients. The numerical simulation is performed with the k-ε turbulence model for predicting the wake region of both car models with and without basebleed. The numerical study witnessed the hatchback car model with basebleed arrived 6% reduction in the coefficient of drag (CD) compared to without basebleed, which results in a reduction of fuel consumption rate of up to 4.33 %. The research evidence that the stability of the car is not affected while using this basebleed drag reduction method and it is studied from the resultant parameters such as coefficient of lift (CL) and coefficient of side force (CS) and for the varying yaw angle (φ). Further, the research recommends the integration of basebleed at the underbody structure in Hatchback cars to improve the engine fuel consumption without affecting its stability.

The paper explores the potential of the biomorphic approach to context-based design with a focus on special-purpose mobility in the Arctic. The study seeks to contribute to the analytical and conceptual basis for developing the transport component of the Arctic life-support system, i.e., a set of objects and technologies, and knowledge and skills for handling them, allowing a person to survive and comfortably exist in severe environmental conditions. The central argument is that the system should incorporate structural components that possess not only technical but also artistic and emotional characteristics that align with the geographic (environmental and climatic), socio-cultural, and psychological peculiarities of use. This can be achieved by drawing inspiration from local nature. We probe the visual image of "soft military presence" using two case studies in different parts of the Russian Arctic: the Yamal and Chukchi peninsulas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Driver behavior has a significant impact on vehicle fuel economy and emissions. Eco-driving refers to anything a driver can do to improve on-road fuel economy. The most common strategy used to promote eco-driving is an in-vehicle display that provides the driver with feedback about their fuel efficiency, typically in real-time.This policy brief summarizes findings from an extensive review and analysis of many studies of eco-driving feedback conducted to determine the average impact of feedback on fuel economy and improve understanding of what types of feedback are most effective. The study provides the most accurate estimate to-date of the average impact of in-vehicle feedback on fuel economy and summarizes the current state of knowledge regarding characteristics of eco-driving feedback interventions that determine effectiveness.View the NCST Project Webpage

In this study, temperatures of samples welded by 3 different welding sorting has been measured and displacements occurring on the part after wielding have been determined and an experimental comparison has been made in this regard. The welded part belongs to the front loader used in tractors. Material of the model is S355j2+N. In the experimental study, 3 samples have been welded for each process. In Process 1, welding lines have been observed outside to inside, in Process 2 inside to outside, and in Process 3 from right to left. For all parts, welding parameters and welding speed have been fixed. Welding manufacture and cooling processes have lasted 3000 seconds in total. 4 points have been determined in order to measure the temperature of the part during the experiment. For determination of displacement amount, sample parts have been measured by means of 3-dimensional laser measuring device before and after welding. When results of experiment are examined, it has been observed that temperatures curves are similar in processes no. 1 and 3; and the process has been completed by lower temperature in process no. 2. The highest temperatures measured in processes 1, 2 and 3 are respectively as 380°C, 272°C ve 310°C. Displacements of circular and cylindric points are respectively as 2.17 mm, 1.22 mm, 2.12mm. Maximum displacements of the surfaces are as 0.40 mm, 0.41 mm, 0.80 mm for process 1; as 0.10 mm, 0.28 mm, 0.83 mm for process 2; and as 0.71 mm 0.77 mm 1.39 mm for process 2. It has been concluded that process no. 2 has lower temperatures and less displacements. Less amount of displacement or distortion provides use of parts without applying correction afterwards, and eliminates surplus workmanship and time loss. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Electric vehicles contribute significantly to energy consumption and emissions of greenhouse gases, as well as being silent and highly sustainable in terms of usage. Public transportation vehicles, such as buses, play a significant role in transportation, reducing fuel consumption for society as a whole and resolving traffic congestion. It raises the infact values of concqjts such as electricity and a bus when these two phenomena are combined under one roof To ensure long-term serviceability, electric vehicles must be capable of operating under similar conditions as conventional vehicles. In order to ensure that the vehicles are ready for use, they undergo several stages of testing simulating actual operating conditions. Following the conqsletion of the test process, if tiie vehicle meets the predetermined criteria, the test process is considered complete, and the vehicle is approved for use. In this study, two different battery electric bus models were subjected to road endurance tests, critical parts were determined, and product reliability was ensured by product development studies. For this purpose, technical specifications of vehicles were shared, road durabiliiy test area and several road conditions were evaluated, qualification criterias were specified, loading conditions were assessed, mechanical evaluation stages were explained and finally, critical parts of vehicles were shared» By this study, parts required periodic maintenance were revealed, fundamental infbimatioii has been obtained to ensure standardization in bus road durability tests, ensuring adequate vehicle safety has been facilitated. The present work describes the constraint analysis methodology to perform initial sizing for generic wing-in-ground-effect (WIG) vehicles which can be used for their initial conceptual design and the design space exploration. Constraint formulations based on classical equations of motion were adapted for different types of WIG craft to obtain a compact set of equations to visually represent the feasible design space. Relations for classical WIG, power-augmented WIG craft (PARWIG), and dynamic air cushioning WIG craft (DACWIG) were developed to account for various vehicle configurations and model their specific features. Apart from theoretical and available semi-empirical formulations for WIG craft, additional constants and correction factors were recommended using verified time-dependent simulations of several reference WIG craft to enhance the accuracy of the method and perform verification studies. Constraint diagrams and corresponding design spaces were compared to existing data of WIG craft and demonstrated strong capabilities of the method to create the design space with reasonable wing loadings and thrust (power)-to-weight ratios. • Drivers perceived closing sooner for larger headlight configurations except when the headlight configurations were relatively small, in which case the effect of headlight size was attenuated. • A motorcycle headlight configuration that accentuates the full height of a motorcycle and its rider (its longer dimension) might result in sooner perceptual judgments of closing. • Future research should aim to further develop the evidence accumulation model. The aims were to better understand how drivers perceive an approaching set of motorcycle headlights during nighttime driving and to determine whether alternative motorcycle headlight configurations improve drivers' perceptual judgments of closing for an oncoming motorcycle. Motorcyclists account for a disproportionate number of roadway fatalities, especially at night. One potential cause of this is drivers' misjudgments of a motorcycle's approach. The first experiment examined whether drivers were more sensitive to horizontal or vertical optical expansion and whether drivers could integrate these two dimensions to achieve a lower looming threshold. A second experiment built on these results to test whether alternative headlight configurations that maximized size were better than other motorcycle headlight configurations and a car's headlights. In both experiments, participants were instructed to press a button to indicate when they first perceived an oncoming vehicle to be closing under nighttime driving conditions. Headlight orientation did not affect when drivers perceived closing, and drivers were not able to integrate optical expansion from multiple dimensions in a way that achieves a lower looming threshold. However, the alternative motorcycle headlight configurations that accentuated the full extent of a motorcycle's size resulted in drivers perceiving closing sooner than other motorcycle headlight configurations but not sooner than a car. Drivers perceive closing sooner for larger headlight configurations except when the headlight configurations are relatively small, in which case the effect of headlight size is attenuated. There are many important applications that require ride quality characterization. However, the only international standard that specifies a roughness index is not suitable for applications beyond assessing the ride quality of paved roads. Other potential applications include automated ride quality characterization of gravel roads, bike or wheelchair paths, railways, rivers, airways, hyperloops, and elevator channels. This work proposes a composite index that characterizes roughness from multidimensional movements along any path. Statistical tests demonstrate two important properties—that the index is consistent based on an ever-decreasing margin-of-error of the mean, and distinguishable among different paths. A low-cost sensor package of accelerometers, gyroscopes, and a speedometer produced the data for spatio-temporal transformation. The experiments conducted on buses revealed that both the consistency and distinguishability of the index improves with the number of measurements. The approach is best suited for applications that can use in-situ sensors or crowdsensing to automate ride quality characterization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Female and male drivers have different size proportions and anthropometry. However, in the United States and throughout the world, male crash dummies are the norm in vehicle testing and female crash dummies with representative anthropometric characteristics has not yet been used in testing to date. Given this discrepancy, female driver safety is not considered at the same level as male driver safety in the vehicle design and testing process. This research investigates the gap in literature of injury locations experienced by female and male drivers in comparable crashes using a newly created linked dataset of crash and emergency medical services (EMS) data in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Generalized linear regression and k-fold cross validation of over 26,000 unique crash cases were analyzed using explanatory and predictive methods. These analyses revealed that female drivers are more likely to experience their primary anatomic injury as an abdomen, chest, lower extremity, and upper extremity injury than male drivers. The results of this research can be used by researchers, vehicle designers, and policymakers to act upon these differences in injury outcomes and consider them in the development of a safe environment for all roadway users. In the process of vehicle development, the unsteady simulation of thermal management system is very important. A 3D-CFD calculation model of vehicle thermal management is established, and simulations were undertaken for uphill with full loads operations condition. The steady results show that the surface heat transfer coefficient increases to the quadratic parabolic relationship. The unsteady results show that the pulsating temperatures of exhaust and external airflow are higher than about 50°C and lower than 10°C, respectively, and the heat dissipating capacities are higher than about 11%. Accordingly, the conversion equivalent exhaust velocity increased by 1.67%, and the temperature distribution trend is basically the same as unsteady results. The comparison results show that the difference in the under-hood should be not noted, and that the predicted exhaust system surface temperatures using steady velocity equivalent method are low less 10°C than the unsteady results. These results show the steady velocity equivalent method can be used to predict the unsteady heat transfer effect of vehicle thermal management system, and the results obtained by this method are basically consistent with the unsteady results. In this study, an end-of-life (EOL) model is included in the life cycle energy optimization (LCEO) methodology to account for the energy burdens and credits stemming from a vehicle's EOL processing phase and balance them against the vehicle's functional requirements and production and use-phase energies. The substitution with a correction factor allocation method is used to model the contribution of recycling to the EOL phase's energy. The methodology is illustrated through the optimization of the design of a simplified vehicle subsystem. For the latter, multiple recycling scenarios with varying levels of assumed recycling induced material property degradation were built, and their impact on the vehicle subsystem's optimal solutions was compared to that of scenarios based on landfilling and incineration with energy recovery. The results show that the vehicle subsystem's optimal designs are significantly dependent on the EOL scenario considered. In particular, the optimal designs associated with the recycling scenarios are on average substantially heavier, and less life cycle energy demanding, than their landfilling or incineration with energy recovery-related counterparts, thus demonstrating how the inclusion of EOL modeling in the LCEO methodology can significantly alter material use patterns, thereby effecting the very mechanisms enabling the embodiment of the resulting life cycle energy optimal designs. The demand for autonomous electric public transport is increasing globally. New vehicle models and variants are increasing the development complexity and hence the overall development time. Therefore, there is a requirement for a vehicle-packaging tool that can translate user inputs into an optimised vehicle package and can be visualised instantly. The aim of this paper is to develop a parametric tool for designing different concepts for electric autonomous buses. The scope of application is intended in the early phase of the vehicle development process to enable a fast and efficient creation of a flexible bus concept. Through a graphical user interface (GUI), the user is able to size and select all the required components for the autonomous vehicle concepts. The vehicle specification is initiated by selection of one of the three classes of vehicle, the desired number of passengers and then the bus interior's seat arrangement design. An appropriate powertrain and chassis will then automatically be configured in the next steps. The HVAC simulation allows for the design of different components of the refrigeration circuit to ensure proper cabin temperature. For evaluating the concept, the energy consumption is analysed through simulations, and an estimated initial cost of vehicle concepts and individual systems completes the concept. A spider chart summarises all characteristics and offers an overview of the vehicle concept, providing the possibility to compare with other concepts simultaneously. Paratransit plays a critical role in meeting transportation needs in many cities in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). However, it faces deep issues related to pollution, congestion, and safety. Understanding the driving patterns of paratransit in SSA can provide valuable insights into the transportation needs in the region, which is particularly relevant nowadays given the increasing focus on sustainable transportation solutions in Africa. Representative driving cycles, which provide a realistic simulation of the driving conditions a vehicle is likely to encounter, are key to framing policies for effective transportation management, vehicle design, and urban and regional planning. However, cycle development has been limited in SSA due to a lack of data and standardized testing procedures. This study develops a representative driving cycle using GPS data gathered on paratransit vehicles traveling around Stellenbosch, South Africa, providing a benchmark for evaluation and a platform for further research and testing in SSA's dominant transport industry. A novel time series shape-based clustering methodology is employed that combines dynamic time warping and mixed integer programming to cluster micro-trips of varying length based on their time series shapes. Representative micro-trips from each cluster are stitched together with a maximum likelihood approach to curate the final cycle. By including transients from the measured data in cycle development, this novel approach to cycle development is particularly suited for capturing the notoriously unconventional and aggressive driving style of paratransit. The constructed cycle and several international cycles are assessed against the measured database on the basis of eight characteristic kinematic parameters. Objective: The effectiveness of three types of in-vehicle warnings was assessed in a driving simulator across different noise conditions.Background: Although there has been much research comparing different types of warnings in auditory displays and interfaces, many of these investigations have been conducted in quiet laboratory environments with little to no consideration of background noise. Furthermore, the suitability of some auditory warning types, such as spearcons, as car warnings has not been investigated.Method: Two experiments were conducted to assess the effectiveness of three auditory warnings (spearcons, text-to-speech, auditory icons) with different types of background noise while participants performed a simulated driving task.Results: Our results showed that both the nature of the background noise and the type of auditory warning influenced warning recognition accuracy and reaction time. Spearcons outperformed text-to-speech warnings in relatively quiet environments, such as in the baseline noise condition where no music or talk-radio was played. However, spearcons were not better than text-to-speech warnings with other background noises.
