The significance of vegetable production is driven by the need of the population for vitamin products, processing enterprises for raw materials, especially in wartime, in the face of food and environmental hazards, and the need to increase export opportunities, considering international integration processes. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of war on the economic availability and environmental safety of food, to identify and assess the components and vectors of food and environmental safety management, and to evaluate and promote exports in the context of international economic integration. The study employed the methods of analysis and synthesis, generalisation and specification, mathematical and graphical methods. Sources of information: data from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Trade Centre (ITC), and the State Statistics Service of Ukraine. The study analysed the current state of vegetable production, identified the key problems under the influence of food hazards, environmental factors, and integration processes. The study examined the impact of the war on the economic availability and environmental safety of food, estimated the volume of deficit in vegetable production, identified the principal economic and environmental problems and areas for improving the efficiency of the industry in the future. The volume of the deficit in vegetable production was found and the size of the lost sowing areas was determined; the reasons for the unsatisfactory state of vegetable production were identified. It was established that in recent years the country has experienced a temporary famine, which is unacceptable in the European space. It was found that, to minimise the agri-food crisis and environmental threats, it is necessary to focus on the implementation of the proposed measures to support production efficiency, the implementation of which will allow solving the issues of independence and food security of territorial communities, especially in times of war, and improve the functionality of governing bodies, economic entities, investors, scientists, and producers based on sustainable development. The practicality of the study findings is confirmed by the effectiveness of the developed proposals that can be used in the implementation of measures to increase vegetable production and exports

Relevance. The state of Russia's agro-industrial complex determines the country's national security, as it provides the population with quality agricultural products and raw materials, which affects state sovereignty. According to a number of analysts, in commercial vegetable growing, about 80 % of sown areas are annually sown with imported varieties and hybrids, and this is a vulnerability in ensuring the industry's independence and the country's competitiveness. Strengthening technological sovereignty in the field of vegetable production is one of the priorities of the state agrarian policy, as well as the main focus of scientific organisations and private companies.Results. Federal State Budgetary Scientific Institution Federal Scientific Vegetable Center (FSBSI FSVC) is a major scientific center of the industry, which can compete with foreign companies with its breeding achievements. The article shows the leading position in the breeding of vegetable and melon crops FSBSI FSVC, which actively conducts research on private genetics, biotechnology, contributing to the acceleration of the breeding process; varieties and hybrids are created that combine consistently high productivity, early maturity, resistance to biotic and abiotic stressors, high quality products with an optimal content of biologically active substances to obtain potential raw materials and products of functional action; development of resource-saving, environmentally safe, high-precision technologies for cultivation of vegetable and melon crops, taking into account species and varietal characteristics, as well as scientific bases and practical recommendations for production of original seeds taking into account zonal specifics.However, there are problems hindering the introduction of breeding achievements: the increased cost of registration of breeding achievements in the State Register of Selection Achievements of the Russian Federation of the Russian Federation, bureaucratic difficulties in their approbation, which arose for breeders after the adoption of the new law "On Seed Production". In order to solve the problems of seed production, the Ministries in charge of vegetable production have launched a sub-programme "Development of breeding and seed production of vegetable crops", which aims to increase the production of domestic competitive seeds and brings together the state, science and business.

Purslane is often labeled as a noxious weed in Florida; however, this seemingly pesky plant is perceived as a nutritional powerhouse in Asia and other continents. Levels of vitamin A and E in purslane far surpass those found in broccoli, tomato, and lettuce. A mere 3.5 ounces of purslane can fulfill 81% of an individual's daily vitamin requirements, and up to half a pound can meet the daily needs for both Vitamins A and E. Sustaining this nutritional wealth hinges on the timing of harvest when purslane plants attain a height of 5 to 6 inches. Beyond this stage, purslane becomes excessively fibrous and aged, making it unsuitable for consumption and necessitating removal through weeding. This publication article provides a comprehensive overview of purslane, delving into its botany, garden production, harvest practices, and both culinary and medicinal uses to assist growers and consumers in understanding when to savor its nutritional benefits and when to weed it from farmlands.

The aim of the study is to represent the author's methodology for assessing the excellence of agriculture, which would be implanted into a single efficiency formula, which involves conceptualization of the assessment of fertility reproduction processes. The authors started from the hypothesis that post-industrial agriculture will be more and more regulated according to the criteria of ecological, not market perfection. The industry will not focus on market efficiency, but the market will adapt to environmental requirements. At the same time, ecological perfection will be determined by the dynamics of soil fertility. The methodology (logic of cognition) was built on the specified hypothesis, according to which the efficiency of modern agriculture should be evaluated by the carbon balance in the production process. The results of the selection work of the Primorsky vegetable experimental station, work in the field of seed production of vegetable crops are presented, the characteristics of the negative processes occurring in the arable soils of the region and their removal by the developed ridgeridge technology of cultivation by technical means with a wide base are given. The experience of the Primorsky branch of the Federal scientific vegetable center allows organizing production at a modern level, taking into account the rich experience of other regions of Russia. In conditions of monsoon climate and soils of heavy granulometric composition, with a general lack of heat, their fertility is negatively affected by a large number of external factors. To grow vegetables, a set of measures is needed for serious drainage and irrigation reclamation (creation of polder systems with the laying of systematic plastic drainage) against the backdrop of ridge-ridge cultivation technology, fine irrigation system). The developed wide-cut technology and a set of machines make it possible to introduce a resource-saving technology that saves energy costs and fuel.

The object of the research is the marketing impact on the market and end consumer of vegetable products. In the research process, a number of general scientific and special methods were used, in particular: system-structural analysis and synthesis as the main methodological tool, monographic and extrapolation. The marketing influence on the market and the final consumer of vegetable growing products is disclosed. A marketing research of the vegetable market on the domestic and foreign markets was conducted, which is a necessary condition for the formation of an effective strategy and tactics for the development of marketing in this area. After all, the ratio of supply and demand in the vegetable market determines the movement of capital and the transfer of resources between industries and regions, affects the level and dynamics of prices and, therefore, is a key factor in the formation of producers’ income. The development of new management methods and approaches convincingly demonstrates the need to implement marketing as one of the market tools capable of meeting the needs of the market and combining the interests of business entities. The subject of this research paper is the evaluation of spinach's (Spinacia oleracea L.) production profitability, given that spinach is an important vegetable species for human nutrition and health. The research started with an overview of spinach production worldwide and in the European Union in the past ten years (2012-2021). The Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia (SORS) does not monitor the production and yield of spinach as a separate vegetable species, so comparison between Serbia and other world countries is not possible. Therefore, the paper analyzes the values of spinach exports and imports in Serbia. In the end, the evaluation of profit and critical values is given on the example of open field spinach production by an agricultural producer in the area of AP Vojvodina, in the South Banat district. The analysis of achieved profit was made based on the calculation of spinach production for one production cycle (autumn sowing 2021/harvest 2022) on an area of 1ha. The achieved results show that the production of spinach in this district is profitable, and the financial result is positive.

Vegetable production is common in peri-urban agriculture where produce is sold in nearby towns, and the Santiago Metropolitan Region (SMR) in Chile is no exception. The objective of this article is to explore the productive, commercial and management strategies of small-scale vegetable growers at the SMR, their attitudes towards their activity, and to identify different profiles. We surveyed in person 170 farmers. The data was analyzed using descriptive and multivariate techniques. Results suggest that different characteristics and strategies are concomitant to certain attitudes that vegetable growers hold towards key aspects such as innovation or willingness to associate.

This study aimed to test impacts on soil fertility, plant yield, and plant nutrient content when growing vegetables (Arugula and Radish) at different compost treatments rates (10%, 30%, 50% and 70% v/v) and with synthetic fertilizer. The compost used in this study was produced from food wastes in combination of wood chips. The results showed the impacts on vegetable growth and soil fertility varied exceptionally by the compost amendment rate. Specifically, the leafy crop experienced an increased yield with the incremented compost ratio and therefore the highest treatment (70%) generated a harvest several times larger to that of non-treated soil. For the root vegetable, the largest output was observed at a medium treatment rate (50%). Additionally, the applications revealed compost treatments at high percentages generally promoted elements N, P, K, Na, Mn, Zn and Mg within the vegetable contents. On the contrary, a low compost amount (10%) boosted Ca, Al, and Fe levels. In terms of soil fertility enrichment, the compost can improve C, N, K and Zn at medium to high treatment rates (30% to 70%). Particularly, at such amounts, the compost enhanced C and N contents within the ground soil more than the fertilizer application. Based on the gathered outcomes, root vegetables will thrive at 50% compost treatment allowing for the replacement of complete synthetic fertilizer use without significant reduction on yields and nutrients. As for leafy green vegetables, the 70 % compost concentration permits the replacement of more than half the total fertilizer usage.

Relevance. Vegetable growing is a traditional sector of agriculture in Azerbaijan. The republic has all the conditions for its development, both natural and socio-economic. Materials and methods. The aim of the research was to analyze the current state of vegetable growing in the republic, to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the industry, to determine the terms of support for producers from the state and branch science. Results. The gross harvest of vegetables has been steadily growing in the last decades, and by 2019 amounted to 1715 thousand tons. The yield of vegetables also increased during this period from 14, 7 to 21.9 t / ha. In door production area is approximately 4800 ha. The production of greenhouse vegetables is focused on the Russian market. The bottleneck in the industry is vegetable seed production, a market with a capacity of almost 20 million euros is occupied by foreign companies. At the same time, the agricultural producers get state support in the form of subsidies and soft loans and a full tax exemption. Industry science is also developing: the Research Institute of Vegetable Production has been reconstructed and fully equipped, special training organized for vegetable growers in the Azerbaijan State Agrarian University. Further development of the industry continues through the intensification and biologization of production, expanding the range and improving product quality.

This year, the staff of the Federal Scientific Vegetable Center (FSVC) celebrates their 100th anniversary. Prof. S. I. Zhegalov was the recognized founder of the institution, which was reorganized from Gribovo Vegetable Experimental Station. Its team started with 14 employees, and the experimental crop area was slightly less than 4 hectares. In a short period of time (1920 to 1927), 74 cultivars of the most popular vegetable crops and a number of flower crop varieties were developed and improved. The second period of the Station’s development (1937 to 1966) was associated with the name of Acad. E. I. Ushakova. During this period, a pleiad of talented scientific plant breeders emerged and thrived: A. V. Alpatyev, S. P. Agapova, E. M. Popova, A. D. Plinka, Yu. A. Kobyakova, and others. In 1971, Gribovo Experimental Station was transformed into the All-Union Scientific Research Institute for Breeding and Seed Production of Vegetable Crops (VNIISSOK). The Institute was headed by Acad. P. F. Sokol. Under his leadership, capacity building and logistic support of the Institute were promoted: new facilities were built, and the experimental production network was expanded. Despite the difficulties associated with the reorganization and the financial and political situation in the country in 1992–2017, the staff achieved significant results during the years of the directorship by Acad. V. F. Pivovarov. New cultivars were developed to meet the demand; they occupied more than 50% of the crop area under vegetables across the country. Each year, the Institute produced 200–300 tons of elite and cultivar seeds. In 2017, the Institute was merged into the Federal Scientific Vege table Center as the keystone element. The Center also incorporated the All-Russian Research Institute of Vegetable Production and seven experiment stations throughout the Russian Federation. The Institute has been successfully cooperating with the N.I. Vavilov Institute of Plant Genetic Resources (VIR) for many years, exchanging germplasm materials and experience, and jointly developing vegetable cultivars.

East Africa has the potential to boost its urban food production through adoption of soilless farming techniques. The case study assessed the benefits and drawbacks allied with hydroponic vegetable farming among urban and peri‑urban farms in Northern Tanzania and Central Uganda. Snowball sampling was used to identify 150 vegetable farms/farmers through urban farmers’ groups and recommendations from the agricultural organizations from Uganda and Tanzania. Based on the complexity and distinctiveness of this farming system, only 51 individuals engaging in hydroponic vegetable production took part in responding to the semi-structured Google form questionnaire that was issued through social media platforms, face to face interviews and farm visits. Results from the study showed that hydroponics is a climate smart farming system (n = 13, 26%), produces high yields within limited space (n = 24, 48%), has no soil borne pests and diseases (n = 10, 20%) and gives the farmer the ability to control environmental conditions (n = 2, 4%). On the contrary, over 50% of the respondents reported high investment costs (n = 16, 31%) and lack of adequate knowledge on hydroponics (n = 11, 22%) as the main limitations of the technology. Based on farmers’ recommendations, hydroponics has potential to increase food security within urban areas if more efforts are put in sensitization about the farming system and research into ways to reduce the high costs associated with the technology.

Background. The subject and purpose of the work is a study of the directions for further development of the export infrastructure of the vegetable growing industry, clarification of the theoretical concept "potential of the export infrastructure of vegetable growing", disclosed its structure. The analysis of the development of the export of vegetable products has been carried out; the role of the export potential of vegetable growing in assessing the country's competitiveness has been clarified, the problems of developing the export infrastructure of vegetable growing have been identified. Materials and methods. The research is based on the previously published works of scientists and representatives of the professional community on the export infrastructure in Russian practice. The subject of the research is the export potential of the open and protected ground vegetable growing industry and its use. The object is the activity of agricultural organizations engaged in foreign trade. The study used general scientific methods of analysis, synthesis, comparison and generalization, abstract logical, graphic. Information base – information and scientific material, statistical data of the food and agricultural organization of the United Nations (FAO), official periodicals of modern analytical centers. Results. According to the new Doctrine of Food Security, the strategic plan is to build up export potential. The regional export standard 2.0 is being introduced, which contains unified approaches to the formation of an effective export infrastructure and the creation of favorable conditions for the export of vegetable products. The article examines the infrastructure for exporting products, its potential and directions for the further development of the export infrastructure of vegetable growing. Conclusions. The main directions of development of the export infrastructure of vegetable growing have been substantiated. The research results are used in the implementation of the regional export standard 2.0.

One of the agriculture branches practiced in the cities of Rzeczpospolita and Principality of Moldova of, in the XVI-XVII c., was vegetable growing. Vegetable growing has been stimulated by several factors including: geo-climatic factor (temperature suitable plant growth, the presence of water for irrigation and others); the religious factor (during the fasts the population consumed especially vegetal products); the commercial factor (the possibility of selling vegetables on the market). Practicing this branch requires more extensive knowledge of agriculture compared to other agricultural culture. Vegetable growing provided food and ingredients for different types of food. In the cities of these countries, the same vegetables were cultivated: cabbage, beets, carrots, onions, radishes and others. Usually, the vegetables cultivated by townspeople were used to meet local requirements, bringing some incomes to the inhabitants of urban settlements by selling them.

The article is aimed at describing the problems and prospects of organic vegetable market development in Ukraine from the point of view of small business. In the segment of vegetable production in Ukraine, an active formation of the organic market is going on, as evidenced by the AIC dynamics, surpassing any other indicators. At the same time, the non-certified production of organic vegetable growing is being carried out spontaneously or in a less orderly manner. There is a big problem concerning the correct monitoring of this sector of farms, which is represented, first of all, by small commodity forms of production. Earlier or later, but the implementation of this group of farms to the available monitoring network will occur as the market becomes formalized, because the lack of certification limits directly both the prices and the profits. The study results in determining that the national market needs modern infrastructure. It can be argued that the domestic market of organic vegetable production in Ukraine continues to remain in the domain of uncertain pricing mechanisms, the consequence of which is, on the one hand, the overstatement of prices, on the other - lack of an established demand segment. Prospects for further researches in this direction is studying the peculiarities of formation and development of the market of organic vegetable products in Ukraine from the point of view of small business.

Vegetable growing is one of the most dynamically developing branches of agriculture in the Russian Federation. Research on the economics and organization of the production of vegetables and fruits of melons and gourds began at the All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Hydrometeorology (VNIIO) after its formation in 1930 and served as the basis for the creation of commercial vegetable-growing zones, specialized farms and green-house complexes around major cities and industrial centers of Russia, as well as vegetable farms in other republics. The following were developed: a promising scheme for the development and placement of vegetable growing in zones of the country in open and protected ground, scientifically based proposals for improving the organization and increasing the efficiency of vegetable growing in Moscow, Ryazan, Ivanovo, Bryansk, Irkutsk, Lipetsk and other regions of Russia. From 2000 to 2014, research focused on the development of concepts for the development of commercial vegetable and seed production of open and protected soil in the context of existing economic relations and forms of management. Since 2015, an analysis of the economic efficiency of vegetable production in the Russian Federation has been carried out, taking into account large-scale and small-scale production, interregional exchange of vegetable products, taking into account import and export, equivalence of inter-sectoral exchange, development of cooperation in the village, economic efficiency of long-term storage of fresh vegetables, and optimal size of vegetable production. for vegetable producers of all forms of ownership, safety of vegetable products in the context of food safety Russia. Today, Russia produces 105.7 kg of vegetables per capita per year, and in 2017, the self-sufficiency of open and protected soil in vegetables was 81.1%. The large stability of large-scale production was noted in the conditions of the unfavorable economic situation in the vegetable industry. Identified systemic problems that limit the increase in the production of vegetable products and adversely affect its effectiveness.

The modern development of recent years has not left agriculture untouched either. The advent and introduction of precision technology have accelerated events further. Slowly, even the smallest farms are trying to move from the methods they have become accustomed to as much as possible, using precision technology to make their operations more efficient and profitable, as those who lag behind will lag behind and will not be sufficiently competitive with other producers. Precision development covers all areas, we have the opportunity to apply new knowledge and technologies in sowing, irrigation, plant protection, harvesting, and last but not least, nutrient replenishment and even other areas. This development is a major task and very topical for smaller producers in rural areas, as they need to develop and create the necessary financial resources, which in many cases can only be achieved in the form of subsidies from different locations. This is all the more true for horticultural crops, since, for example, in contrast to the arable crop production, producers have much higher energy and capital requirements to achieve the same level of profit. In the course of the study, we examined the opinion of the producers supported by the Southern Horticultural Cooperatives -- Délalföldi Kertészek Szövetkezete (DélKerTÉSZ) - whether the Agro Sense decision support precision tool placed to them had improved their production conditions and made their production more profitable due to the use of the tool. ABSTRACT: An adequate supply of fresh, high quality and accessible vegetables is essential for a healthy food system. In Latin America, these are mostly produced by smallholder farmers. The objective of this research was to characterize the productive and commercial development of small-scale vegetable growers and to further understand and explain their attitudes on their business. A total of 335 farmers in Central Chile area were surveyed. The data was processed using descriptive and multivariate techniques. Results showed that farmers have a positive self-assessment of their technical performance, production quality and the contribution of farming to their household income. They express uncertainty about the future, as well as some disappointment with the prices they receive for their produce and their access to public support programs. There are significant differences between farmers within the sample; however, which allow two distinct clusters to be identified: “conformist” (69.05%) and “critical” (30.95%). These results suggested that these small-scale vegetable growers have certain generalizable attitudes and other divergent. The differences in attitudes coincide with differences in objective characteristics, including age, education, farm size and technology.

The article is aimed at studying the conceptual foundations of methodology and methodics of evaluation of the soil fertility reproduction processes in the vegetable growing industry sector. It is proposed to evaluate the processes of soil fertility use and reproduction, and hence perfection of the vegetable growing industry, according to the ecological criterion, which was defined as one of the most important in evaluating the level of market perfection of vegetable products. In turn, this criterion is considered in the light of intensity of use and reproduction of soil fertility in the vegetable production and in the formation of prices in the market of vegetable products. All this has determined the methodology of authors’ research, which in the final version is reduced to the calculation of balance between the use of soil fertility, on the one hand, and its reproduction, on the other hand. Methods for definition of ecological risks of the industry together with recommendations on possibility of their reduction, based on the principle of reproduction of soil fertility, are suggested. Implementation of such methodical approach, in contrast to the known, provides an original economic interpretation of the process of use and reproduction of fertility on the basis of data on the features of crops, crop rotation, productivity, fertilizers, taking attention of other agritechnical factors as well.
