Abstract

This paper describes the development of and first experiences with 'Design Your Life': a novel method aimed at user-initiated design of technologies supporting young autistic adults in independent living. A conceptual, phenomenological background resulting in four core principles is described. Taking a practice-oriented Research-through-Design approach, three co-design case studies were conducted, in which promising methods from the co-design literature with the lived experiences and practical contexts of autistic young adults and their caregivers is contrasted. This explorative inquiry provided some first insights into several design directions of the Design Your Life-process. In a series of new case studies that shall follow, the Design Your Life-method will be iteratively developed, refined and ultimately validated in practice.

Abstract

Transdisciplinary research requires improved knowledge exchange between science and practice. Such improvements include diversifying and scaling up knowledge accessing and sharing through online platforms. We conducted twenty interviews informed by behavioral science methods to clarify the aim, components, and participants' perspectives on the usefulness of the proposed components for an envisioned platform. Participants were members of a Dutch community of practice for river studies and a research programme into integrated and collaborative management. The proposed concept included storylines, data repositories, user profiles, interactive visualisations, and collaborative sessions. Interview results include drivers and barriers from prospective users that we translated into requirements to increase the potential adoption and effective use of online platforms with similar components. From the experiences with implementing these requirements, we provide recommendations for enabling primary drivers: (i) Combining online and offline interactions to provide various options for knowledge exchange between disciplines and organisations. (ii) Sharing the content and application of the research with a non-scientific audience. (iii) Reusing existing online platforms as much as possible without restricting any to improve the reuse of research methods and results. We further provide recommendations to overcome the main barriers: (i) Partnering with various communities to extend knowledge exchange. (ii) Following a participatory approach to improve the design and content while considering the time and resources that such a process entails. (iii) Providing flexible options to contribute and tailor overviews of available knowledge in different ways according to prospective users' roles in practice. Abstract

Achtergrond Ondersteunende technologieën worden in toenemende mate ontworpen om mensen met autisme te ondersteunen in het dagelijks leven. Het daadwerkelijke gebruik van dergelijke technologieën lijkt echter beperkt te zijn. We zien twee mogelijke oorzaken. Enerzijds kan dit komen omdat autistische mensen beperkt of niet betrokken worden bij de ontwikkeling van de technologieën. Anderzijds kan dat komen omdat technologieën vaak gericht zijn op ‘functionele beperkingen’, waarbij minder aandacht wordt gegeven aan de totale ervaring die mensen hebben met de technologie en de omgeving waarin het gebruik wordt. Doel Deze poster presenteert de ontwikkeling van en ervaringen met Design Your Life, een nieuwe methode die gericht is op het zelf ontwerpen van technologische omgevingen die de autonomie van autistische jongvolwassenen ondersteunen. De gepresenteerde methode legt daarmee ontwerphulpmiddelen in handen van de mensen die zelf technologie gebruiken, namelijk jonge autistische volwassenen, en hun begeleiders. Methode De eerste versie van de methode is ontwikkeld aan de hand van inzichten uit tien ontwerpcasestudies. Deze zijn uitgevoerd volgens een research-through-design benadering. Veelbelovende methoden uit de design literatuur werden hierin toegepast en afgezet tegen de geleefde ervaringen en praktische contexten van jonge autistische volwassenen en hun begeleiders. De resultaten van de casestudies zijn vervolgens geanalyseerd aan de hand van grounded theory. Resultaten Dit onderzoek heeft een aantal belangrijke inzichten opgeleverd voor de ontwerprichting van de Design Your Life methode. Zo laten de casestudies zien dat belanghebbenden de aanpak waarderen. Daarnaast werd duidelijk dat de methode zelf aanpasbaar moet zijn voor de gebruikers. Ook was in de meeste gevallen de hulp van de betrokken onderzoeker nodig om het proces op gang te houden. Dit laatste zal ook van invloed zijn op de adoptie van de methode in zorgorganisaties. Conclusie De toegevoegde waarde van de voorgestelde methode ligt in het in handen geven van de ontwerpinstrumenten aan jonge volwassenen met autisme en hun verzorgers. Daartoe zullen de bestaande ontwerpinstrumenten zorgvuldig geselecteerd en aangepast moeten worden. Bovendien zal verder onderzocht worden in welke mate de bevindingen generiek of uniek zijn. Zo zal beter onderzocht moeten worden hoe de methode zelf aanpasbaar moet zijn aan de voorkeuren van de gebruikers (m.a.w. moet de methode zelf gepersonaliseerd worden?). In een reeks van teststudies die zullen volgen, zal de Design Your Life methode iteratief verder worden ontwikkeld en uiteindelijk in de praktijk gevalideerd worden.

Abstract

This paper presents a completed research-through-design on the adoption of a design methodology in practice and the development of support for the adoption process. A case study was conducted to explore how design practices apply Scenario-Based Product Design methodology and how it can be supported by a design tool. Prototypes of the tool, as an instrument of design knowledge enquiry, have informed the researcher of the practical concerns and possible implications of supporting the methodology using a design tool. The availability of support encourages a more explicit use of scenarios in design thinking and reflection and increases the clarity of rationales behind design decisions. By making explicit and supporting concrete steps in a design methodology, the cumulative practice-based experiences will deliver a more solid knowledge base required to improve the design methodology.

Background: Generalisation of findings is an important aspect of research and essential for evidence-based practice. While generalisation is common in quantitative research, there is a lack of generalisability in qualitative research. This paper presents the experience and challenges faced by the Designing for People with Dementia (MinD) project in meeting the requirements to strengthen the generalisation of findings on the lived experience of people living with dementia and their engagement to co-create designs to empower their everyday living. Methods: Polit and Beck (2010)’s strategies to generalise qualitative findings were applied: (1) replication in sampling; (2) replication of studies; (3) meta-synthesis of findings; (4) reflexivity and conceptualization; (5) immersion with the data; and (6) thick description. Results: While it is possible to increase the generabilisabilty of qualitative evidence through the replication of the sampling to attain a large, heterogeneous sample in different and multiple contexts and environments; implementation of sound and robust research; conducting in-depth analysis and interpretation collaboratively for emergent themes; and meeting the thick description requirement, there are challenges that the project team faced in implementing some of the Polit and Beck’s strategies because of the condition, namely dementia, that our participants are having. Other challenges faced were: the language and cultural diversity in the team; diverse work and organisational procedures; and the inter-disciplinary differences relating to the methods of enquiry, approaches and techniques to conduct research. Abstract

Achieving flood safety norms is central to river management in the Netherlands. Hydrodynamic models are used to determine whether flood safety norms are met by predicting water levels and flow patterns for specific river discharges. However, many river management stakeholders view these models as black boxes. This is a problem because hydrodynamic models are used to support and substantiate decision-making. To address this issue, we set out to create the Virtual River Game where various stakeholders, both with and without hydraulic modelling experience, can collaboratively work with a hydrodynamic model and experiment with interventions. As a solution, we created a physical game board as a tangible user interface to the Delft3D Flexible Mesh hydrodynamic model. The game board represents a Dutch river stretch as a hexagonal grid with 143 tiles. Each tile is always filled with game pieces that contain information on the tile’s elevation and land use through visual markers. The interface turns the board digital by analyzing the markers in a picture taken with a webcam that is placed underneath the board. The digital board is used to create a land use distribution and a digital elevation model that matches the hydrodynamic model’s numerical grid through an inverse distance interpolation. The model’s output (water levels and flow patterns) are visualized on the game board by a projector. In the Virtual River Game, players use the board to apply interventions by rearranging game pieces and to inspect the effects of interventions through the projected visualizations. Results from initial game sessions indicate that the interface enables stakeholders to collaboratively work with the hydrodynamic model regardless of their expertise and background. The interface presents new opportunities to enable stakeholders to work with environmental models used in practice.
