- Abstract
The changes of European climate have serious effects on society and economy. A thorough climatological analysis is fundamental to provide reliable and accurate assessments of these changes. Extreme temperature events, such as heatwaves and cold spells, have considerable effects on e.g. health systems, energy consumption and phenological cycles. Their changes in frequency and severity over the last centuries can be studied using daily temperature series from in-situ weather stations. However, these series suffer from external interventions to the measuring stations, such as relocations and modifications to the instruments, and from changes in their surroundings (growing trees, new buildings). These induced changes in the recorded values are not related to climatic events, making the series inhomogeneous and unreliable. With the aim of producing solid temperature databases, several works in the past decades have introduced techniques for the identification of such changes and their correction (homogenization). Within this thesis, a new procedure has been developed, taking inspiration from the Quantile Matching method [Trewin, 2013]. This is based on the calculation of different adjustments for average and extreme values and, in this project, has been revisited and modified, introducing new aspects aimed at making it more flexible, more heuristic and more faithful to the originally observed data. The new homogenization is applied to the European Climate Assessment & Dataset (ECA&D), a pan-European dataset providing observations from all European National Meteorological Services. The method is validated with a comparison to acknowledged homogenization methods against a benchmark dataset, proving its robustness and the quality of the results. The homogenized temperature series, thanks to their high reliability, are then analyzed, performing trend analyses focused on the extreme events. Finally the homogenized series are use

- Abstract
© 2020, The Author(s). Monitoring and management of several environmental and socioeconomic sectors require climate data that can be summarized using a set of standard and meaningful climate metrics. This study describes a newly developed gridded dataset for the whole of Europe, which employed a set of 125 climate indices spanning different periods based on data availability, but mainly 1950–2017 and 1979–2017. This dataset comprehensively summarizes climate variability in Europe for a wide range of climate variables and conditions, including air temperature, precipitation, biometeorology, aridity, continentality, drought, amongst others. Climate indices were computed at different temporal scales (i.e. monthly, seasonal and annual) and mapped at a grid interval of 0.25°. We intend to update these indices on an annual basis. This dataset is freely available to research and end-user communities.

[EN]The INDECIS project (Integrated approach for the development across Europe of user oriented climate indicators for GFCS high-priority sectors: agriculture, disaster risk reduction, energy, health, water and tourism) needs to address the homogenization and quality control of daily series of the essential climatic variables stored in ECAD. The series of two different regions (southern Sweden and Slovenia) are analyzed to evaluate the type, magnitude and frequency of the inhomogeneities to be introduced in homogeneous test series generated from the Regional Climate Model RACMOv2. After applying the available homogenization methods, their results will be compared by means of goodness of fit metrics and the best methodologies will be selected to debug the series stored in ECAD, in order to calculate relevant climatic indices with which to evaluate the impact of climate change in priority economic sectors. Working group number 3 (WP3) of INDECIS project (Integrated approach for the development across Europe of user oriented climate indicators for Global Framework for Climate Services high-priority sectors: agriculture, disaster risk reduction, energy, health, water and tourism) is charged of ensure the adequacy of the data used through the rest of the project. For this reason, a benchmarking experiment applying the Quality Control Softwares and the homogenization software is desired. The scheme WP3 can be divided in six steps: 1) to define one or more regions to develop our benchmark experiment as well as the climatic variables of interest; 2) to obtain pairs of real series to create test-datasets in order to characterize non-climatic perturbations that could be found; 3) an ideal series representing the study area climate is created; 4) the ideal databases (DDBB) can be perturbed using real information generated in step 2; 5) a synthetic but realistic perturbed DDBB' can be utilized to test quality control and homogenization methods, plus to obtain a new DDBB" free of perturbations; 6) a final comparison of the latest obtained DDBB" and the original nonperturbed DDBB will characterize the present capabilities of the quality control and homogenization procedures. In order to contribute to the development of climate knowledge, pooling efforts and resources, we take advantage of ECA&D project (European Climate Assessment & Dataset Project), using its variables. Two regions have been selected by the moment: the south of Sweden and Slovenia. These regions show a high density of observatories in ECA&D database. In south Sweden, 200 pairs of series have been identified (42 for maximum and minimum temperature, 31 for precipitation, 16 for relative humidity, pressure and wind speed, 34 for snow depth and 3 for sunshine). The differences of quantiles for each pair of series are being analysed to quantify the possible relocation impact as well as the frequency of break points due to a inhomogenization in individual series. On the other hand, the Euro-CORDEX simulations have been considered to play the role of ideal series. In this case, the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) Regional Atmospheric Climate Model (RACMO) versión 2 driven by Hadley Global Environment Model 2 - Earth System (MOHC-HadGEM2-ES) has been selected. The requirements stablished were: the highest spacial resolution of 0.11 degrees, daily time step and a correspondence of the output variables with the ECA&D variables of study. The simulations comprise the historical experiment (1950 a 2005) and have been obtained for south Sweden and Slovenia. The Project INDECIS is part of ERA4CS, an ERA-NET initiated by JPI Climate, and funded by FORMAS (SE, DLR (DE), BMWFW (AT), IFD (DK), MINECO (ES), ANR (FR) with co-funding by the European Union (Grant 690462.

[EN]In the framework of the European co-funded project entitled “Integrated approach for the development across Europe of user oriented climate indicators for GFCS high-priority sectors: agriculture, disaster risk reduction, energy, health, water and (INDECIS 2017-2020), around 600K station observations are being rescued over European sub-regions (mainly Central Europe and Balkans region) for the main climate variables (maximum and minimum temperatures, rainfall, sunshine duration and snow depth) along the 20th century at a daily scale. The rescued dataset will be incorporated into the ECA&D to increase its spatial and temporal data coverage across Europe. An extensive examination of the ECA&D dataset was conducted first to find data gaps in European regions, or stations with low percentages of daily data as prior candidates for data recovery. The Central Europe and the Balkans were key subregions, among others, where data rescue efforts should be focused. Digitizing method is being carried out by using a strict "key as you see" method, meaning that the digitizers type the values provided in the data images, rather than using any coding system. Digitizers carefully cross check their values with the original source values for the 10th, 20th and 30th day of each month. This ensures that no days were skipped or repeated during the digitization process. Monthly totals and summaries are used by the digitizers to calculate these values from their daily transcribed data to check accuracy. The digitizing method is ensuring an accurate data transcription according to the obtained statistics. - Abstract
Accumulated snow amounts are a key climate change indicator. It combines the competing effects of climate change-driven changes in precipitation and stronger snowmelt related to increasing temperatures. Here we provide observational evidence from a pan-European in situ data set that mean snow depth generally decreases stronger than extreme snow depth. Widespread decreases in maximum and mean snow depth were found over Europe, except in the coldest climates, with an average decrease of −12.2%/decade for mean snow depth and −11.4%/decade for maximum snow depth since 1951. These trends accelerated after the 1980s. This has strong implications for the availability of freshwater in spring, while extremes in snow depth, usually very disruptive to society, are decreasing at a slower pace.

SxviAUGUST 2016|ABSTRACT—J. BLUNDEN AND D. S. ARNDTIn 2015, the dominant greenhouse gases released into Earth’s atmosphere—carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide—all continued to reach new high levels. At Mauna Loa, Hawaii, the annual CO2 concentration increased by a record 3.1 ppm, exceeding 400 ppm for the first time on record. The 2015 global CO2 average neared this threshold, at 399.4 ppm. Additionally, one of the strongest El Niño events since at least 1950 developed in spring 2015 and continued to evolve through the year. The phenomenon was far reaching, impacting many regions across the globe and affecting most aspects of the climate system.Owing to the combination of El Niño and a long-term up-ward trend, Earth observed record warmth for the second con-secutive year, with the 2015 annual global surface temperature surpassing the previous record by more than 0.1°C and exceed-ing the average for the mid- to late 19th century—commonly considered representative of preindustrial conditions—by more than 1°C for the first time. Above Earth’s surface, lower troposphere temperatures were near-record high.Across land surfaces, record to near-record warmth was reported across every inhabited continent. Twelve countries, including Russia and China, reported record high annual tem-peratures. In June, one of the most severe heat waves since 1980 affected Karachi, Pakistan, claiming over 1000 lives. On 27 October, Vredendal, South Africa, reached 48.4°C, a new global high temperature record for this month. In the Arctic, the 2015 land surface temperature was 1.2°C above the 1981–2010 average, tying 2007 and 2011 for the high-est annual temperature and representing a 2.8°C increase since the record began in 1900. Increasing temperatures have led to decreasing Arctic sea ice extent and thickness. On 25 February 2015, the lowest maximum sea ice extent in the 37-year satel-lite record was observed, 7% below the 1981–2010 average. Mean sea surface temperatures across the Arctic Ocean dur-ing August in ice-free regions, representative of Arctic Ocean summer anomalies, ranged from ~0°C to 8°C above average. As a consequence of sea ice retreat and warming oceans, vast walrus herds in the Pacific Arctic are hauling out on land rather than on sea ice, raising concern about the energetics of females and young animals. Increasing temperatures in the Barents Sea are linked to a community-wide shift in fish populations: boreal communities are now farther north, and long-standing Arctic species have been almost pushed out of the area.Above average sea surface temperatures are not confined to the Arctic. Sea surface temperature for 2015 was record high at the global scale; however, the North Atlantic southeast of Greenland remained colder than average and colder than 2014. Global annual ocean heat content and mean sea level also reached new record highs. The Greenland Ice Sheet, with the capacity to contribute ~7 m to sea level rise, experienced melting over more than 50% of its surface for the first time since the record melt of 2012.Other aspects of the cryosphere were remarkable. Alpine glacier retreat continued, and preliminary data indicate that 2015 is the 36th consecutive year of negative annual mass balance. Across the Northern Hemisphere, late-spring snow cover extent continued its trend of decline, with June the sec-ond lowest in the 49-year satellite record. Below the surface, record high temperatures at 20-m depth were measured at all permafrost observatories on the North Slope of Alaska, increasing by up to 0.66°C decade–1 since 2000. In the Antarctic, surface pressure and temperatures were lower than the 1981–2010 average for most of the year, consis-tent with the primarily positive southern annular mode, which saw a record high index value of +4.92 in February. Antarctic sea ice extent and area had large intra-annual variability, with a shift from record high levels in May to record low levels in August. Springtime ozone depletion resulted in one of the largest and most persistent Antarctic ozone holes observed since the 1990s.Closer to the equator, 101 named tropical storms were observed in 2015, well above the 1981–2010 average of 82. The eastern/central Pacific had 26 named storms, the most since 1992. The western north Pacific and north and south Indian Ocean basins also saw high activity. Globally, eight tropical cyclones reached the Saffir–Simpson Category 5 intensity level.Overlaying a general increase in the hydrologic cycle, the strong El Niño enhanced precipitation variability around the world. An above-normal rainy season led to major floods in Paraguay, Bolivia, and southern Brazil. In May, the United States recorded its all-time wettest month in its 121-year national record. Denmark and Norway reported their second and third wettest year on record, respectively, but globally soil moisture was below average, terrestrial groundwater storage was the lowest in the 14-year record, and areas in “severe” drought rose from 8% in 2014 to 14% in 2015. Drought conditions prevailed across many Caribbean island nations, Colombia, Venezuela, and northeast Brazil for most of the year. Several South Pacific countries also experienced drought. Lack of rainfall across Ethiopia led to its worst drought in decades and affected millions of people, while prolonged drought in South Africa severely affected agricultural production. Indian summer monsoon rainfall was just 86% of average. Extremely dry conditions in Indonesia resulted in intense and widespread fires during August–November that produced abundant car-bonaceous aerosols, carbon monoxide, and ozone. Overall, emissions from tropical Asian biomass burning in 2015 were almost three times the 2001–14 average.

Using a newly available 134-years long record of daily and 114-years hourly observations at Jakarta observatory, trends and variability in temperature, extreme precipitation, and changes in the diurnal cycle over Jakarta have been analysed. Although the number of days with rainfall has decreased over the 1866–2010 period, the fraction of events with rainfall exceeding 50 mm day

How would the spell of extreme weather observed over North America and western Europe during the 2013/2014 winter manifest itself in a warmer climate? Here a forced sensitivity method is used to calculate optimal model tendency perturbations which result in a simulation which has its upper atmospheric circulation shifted in the direction of the January 2014 jet stream pattern. When applied to a simulation run under present-day conditions the main features of the observations of this event are reproduced, such as the more zonal position and increased strength of the midlatitude North Atlantic storm track, the anomalous temperature pattern over North America, and the excessive precipitation in parts of Europe. When this method is applied to a future warmer climate, the North Atlantic storm track changes to a more zonal orientation, but its strength does not see the significant increase that is obtained in the present-day simulations. Despite southward advection of polar air into northeastern America, which has also occurred during the 2013/2014 winter, the associated drop in temperature is less in the future climate compared to the present-day climate because of Arctic amplification. The less steep drop in temperatures over northeastern America leads to a smaller land-sea temperature contrast, less baroclinic instability, and a reduced increase of midlatitude storminess. While one may expect the future increased atmospheric moisture content to augment the net precipitation, for this specific event, this effect is counterbalanced by the dynamics, leading to a similar net increase in precipitation in the future simulations compared to the present day.

- Abstract
The eruption of Mount Tambora (Indonesia) in April 1815 is the largest documented volcanic eruption in history. It is associated with a large global cooling during the following year, felt particularly in parts of Europe and North America, where the year 1816 became known as the "year without a summer". This paper describes an effort made to collect surface meteorological observations from the early instrumental period, with a focus on the years of and immediately following the eruption (1815-1817). Although the collection aimed in particular at pressure observations, correspondent temperature observations were also recovered. Some of the series had already been described in the literature, but a large part of the data, recently digitised from original weather diaries and contemporary magazines and newspapers, is presented here for the first time. The collection puts together more than 50 sub-daily series from land observatories in Europe and North America and from ships in the tropics. The pressure observations have been corrected for temperature and gravity and reduced to mean sea level. Moreover, an additional statistical correction was applied to take into account common error sources in mercury barometers. To assess the reliability of the corrected data set, the variance in the pressure observations is compared with modern climatologies, and single observations are used for synoptic analyses of three case studies in Europe. All raw observations will be made available to the scientific community in the International Surface Pressure Databank.

- Abstract
Although climate change is expected to continue, its negative impacts for the Netherlands appear manageable. Here, most climatic changes will take place more gradual than in many other regions, thus enabling citizens, companies and authorities to adapt. Furthermore, current policies focus attention on important aspects of climate change, such as the risk of flooding, drought and precipitation extremes.

In this paper, an overview is given of the main considerations of an international workshop on rapid warming at the end of the last glacial. Several steps are discussed that could be taken to promote a better understanding of the abrupt climatic changes that occurred during the last glacial-interglacial transition. We focus on the following aspects: chronology, interpretation of terrestrial and marine proxy data, palaeoclimate modelling, model-data comparison and land-sea correlation.
