Abstract

One of the advances in the test blanket module program within the ITER project in the last few years concerned the evolution of the pipe forest (PF) and bioshield plug (BP) designs. In support of the design phase, nuclear analyses to assess several responses in the fusion neutronics environment inside the port interspace (PI) with the existence of the evolved PF and BP are deemed essential. Nuclear analyses were commenced using the new PF and BP with developing the neutronics models and performing preliminary assessment of the radiation fields and shutdown dose rate (SDDR) in the PI. In this paper, the results of a full suite of nuclear analyses are discussed, which covers more configurations and radiation sources, in two plasma operational modes: on and off. For the plasma-on mode, different shielding options were examined. The results show a clear benefit of combining the installation of shielding panels on the PF enclosure with those in the BP "dogleg," through which the pipes penetrate to the port cell area. For the plasma-off mode, the SDDR was assessed from different sources: activated components and residual LiPb layers in pipes after drainage. As maintenance operations are foreseen during the lifetime of the facility, the SDDR was also assessed for access conditions, open BP doors, and transport conditions, with PF extracted in the gallery. Abstract

The long-term objective of the European Fusion Development Agreement (EFDA) fusion materials programme is to develop structural and armor materials in combination with the necessary production and fabrication technologies for reactor concepts beyond the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor. The programmatic roadmap is structured into four engineering research lines which comprise fabrication process development, structural material development, armor material optimization, and irradiation performance testing, which are complemented by a fundamental research programme on "Materials Science and Modeling." Abstract

The current magnetic confinement nuclear fusion power reactor concepts going beyond ITER are based on assumptions about the availability of materials with extreme mechanical, heat, and neutron load capacity. In Europe, the development of such structural and armour materials together with the necessary production, machining, and fabrication technologies is pursued within the EFDA long-term fusion materials programme. This paper reviews the progress of work within the programme in the area of tungsten and tungsten alloys. Results, conclusions, and future projections are summarized for each of the programme's main subtopics, which are: (1) fabrication, (2) structural W materials, (3) W armour materials, and (4) materials science and modelling. Abstract

All the recent DEMO design studies for helium cooled divertors utilize tungsten materials and alloys, mainly due to their high temperature strength, good thermal conductivity, low erosion, and comparably low activation under neutron irradiation. The long-term objective of the EFDA fusion materials programme is to develop structural as well as armor materials in combination with the necessary production and fabrication technologies for future divertor concepts. Abstract

A 19-year-old man was admitted with fever, haematuria, general malaise, pain on the left side of the pelvis and a full feeling in the left lower abdominal quadrant of the abdomen. His history mentioned a varices operation. During admission he developed an acute abdomen and deep vein thrombosis in both legs. CT of the abdomen showed a pathologic mass and absence of the vena cava inferior. Laparotomy revealed extensive thrombosis in widened veins. Clinical improvement occurred following adequate thrombolysis. Congenital absence of the vena cava inferior results from aberrant development during organogenesis. Patients are typically asymptomatic, but may present with venous insufficiency at a young age and deep vein thrombosis. Absence of the vena cava inferior can be accompanied by other congenital abnormalities such as dextrocardia and congenital heart diseases. Diagnosis is made using CT or MRI. Treatment consists of lifelong anticoagulant therapy and, if necessary, surgery.

Abstract

The abdominal CT appearance is reported in a patient with Henoch-Schönlein vasculitis having symptoms of acute abdomen. Initial CT-scan showed segmented mural thickening of the small bowel loops, strongly suggesting the diagnosis of gastrointestinal involvement of vasculitis. Adequate treatment was started without the need for laparotomy. The CT appearance completely resolved after steroid therapy. Abdominal CT-scanning seems useful in the differential diagnosis of acute abdomen in patients with vasculitis.
