Abstract

This paper aims to contribute to the understanding of land markets and sheds light on a specific element of the process through which land is traded, namely the formation of land transaction prices. It argues that the specific features of inner-city land markets and public involvement in particular, adds to the social and institutional character of land markets. Abstract

The issue of environmental governance has received considerable attention. While extensive research focuses on the relationship between economic growth and environmental protection, this paper provides a different perspective by exploring the mechanisms affecting the relationship between land-based revenue and environmental performance. Based on the regression analyses of province-level data during 2000-2018 in China, the results show that: (1) land-based finance has a significantly positive impact on air pollution; (2) both central government policies and local residents' concerns incentivize local governments to improve environmental quality through land revenue; (3) regional differences exist regarding the impact of these two factors, probably due to various development stages and financial conditions; (4) local governments tend to increase expenditure on environmental protection by taking residents' concerns into consideration. This research contributes to understanding the driving forces behind the relationship between land finance and environmental performance, and it extends our knowledge of local governments' decision-making processes to accomplish multiple tasks. Land development is crucial to the process of urban development. Depending on present ownership structure, the promoter–sponsor–developer must acquire one or more plots in a land assembly process. After land assembly, further steps must be taken to make the location suitable for development. Globally, many land development strategies are in place to make sure that land becomes available at the right time and at a fair price, often with huge difference in outcomes and rationales behind them. Abstract

Public spaces have a surplus value for cities, as they are places for unexpected encounters, public discourse, relaxation and passage. Despite the wide range of beneficiaries, municipalities still often consider them as traditional public goods and bear sole responsibility, yet increasingly lack budgets. Co-production could be a possible solution to share costs, rights and responsibilities, but is often contested due to fear of privatisation and commercialisation. This paper evaluates different forms of co-production of public space in New York City and investigates how they could be translated to the Dutch context, where co-production of public space is still rare.
