We introduce the development of EarthCARE Level 2 layer products derived from profile measurements of the high-spectral-resolution lidar ATLID and column products obtained from combined information of ATLID and the Multi-Spectral Imager (MSI). Layer products include cloud top height as well as aerosol layer boundaries and mean optical properties along the satellite nadir track. Synergistic column products comprise cloud top height, Ångström exponent, and aerosol type both along-track and across the MSI swath.

In this paper an introduction to the planned L2 retrieval algorithms for the Earth Clouds and Radiation Explorer (EarthCARE) lidar ATLID is given. The ATLID instrument is a high spectral resolution lidar which will provide independent retrievals of extinction and backscatter profiles and will be launched in 2018. A short description of the intended operational ESA products is given together with the logic behind the choices made.

We introduce the Hybrid End-To-End Aerosol Classification (HETEAC) model for the upcoming EarthCARE mission. The model serves as the common baseline for development, evaluation, and implementation of EarthCARE algorithms. It shall ensure the consistency of different aerosol products from the multi-instrument platform as well as facilitate the conform specification of broad-band optical properties necessary for the EarthCARE radiative closure efforts. The hybrid approach ensures the theoretical description of aerosol microphysics consistent with the optical properties of various aerosol types known from observations. The end-to-end model permits the uniform representation of aerosol types in terms of microphysical, optical and radiative properties.

The Atmospheric LAser Doppler INstrument (ALADIN) on board Aeolus was the first high-spectral-resolution lidar (HSRL) in space. It was launched in 2018 and re-entered in 2023. The FeatureMask (A-FM) and extinction profile algorithms (A-PRO) developed for the Earth Cloud Aerosol and Radiation Explorer (EarthCARE) HSRL ATmospheric LIDar (ATLID) have been adapted to Aeolus and called AEL-FM and AEL-PRO, respectively. These algorithms have been purposely built to process low signal-to-noise ratio space-based lidar signals. A short description of the AEL-FM and AEL-PRO algorithms is provided in this paper. AEL-FM and AEL-PRO prototype products (v1.7) have been evaluated using the collocated Cloud–Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations (CALIPSO) vertical feature mask (VFM) product and level 2 aerosol profile product for 2 months of data in October 2018 and May 2019. Aeolus and CALIPSO are both polar-orbiting satellites, but they have different overpass times. The evaluations are focused on desert dust aerosols over Africa. These types of scenes are often stable in space (tens of kilometres) and time (on the order of 0.5–1 h), and thus, a useful number of collocated cases can be collected. We have found that the AEL-FM feature mask and the CALIPSO VFM show similar aerosol patterns in the collocated orbits, but AEL-FM does not separate aerosol and cloud features. Aeolus and CALIPSO have a good agreement for the extinction coefficients for the dust aerosols, especially for the cloud-free scenes. The Aeolus aerosol optical thickness (AOT) is larger than the CALIPSO AOT, mainly due to cloud contamination. Because of the missing a cross-polar channel, it is difficult to distinguish aerosols and thin ice clouds using the Aeolus extinction coefficients alone. The AEL-FM and AEL-PRO algorithms have been implemented in the Aeolus level 2A (L2A) processor. The findings here are applicable to the AEL-FM and AEL-PRO products in L2A Baseline 17. ATLID (ATmospheric LIDar) is the lidar flown on the multi-instrument Earth Cloud Aerosol and Radiation Explorer (EarthCARE). EarthCARE is a joint ESA–JAXA mission that was launched in May 2024. ATLID is a three-channel, linearly polarized, high-spectral-resolution lidar (HSRL) system operating at 355 nm. Cloud and aerosol optical properties are key EarthCARE products. This paper provides an overview of the ATLID Level 2a (L2a; i.e., single instrument) retrieval algorithms being developed and implemented in order to derive cloud and aerosol optical properties. The L2a lidar algorithms that retrieve the aerosol and cloud optical property profiles and classify the detected targets are grouped together in the so-called A-PRO (ATLID-profile) processor. The A-PRO processor produces the ATLID L2a aerosol product (A-AER); the extinction, backscatter, and depolarization product (A-EBD); the ATLID L2a target classification product (A-TC); and the ATLID L2a ice microphysical estimation product (A-ICE). The objective of the Earth Cloud, Aerosol, and Radiation Explorer (EarthCARE) mission is to infer attributes of cloud, aerosol, precipitation, and radiation from observations made by four complementary instruments. This requires the development of single-instrument and multiple-instrument (i.e. synergistic) retrieval algorithms that employ measurements made by one, or more, of EarthCARE's cloud-profiling radar (CPR), atmospheric lidar (ATLID), and multi-spectral imager (MSI); its broadband radiometer (BBR) places the retrieved quantities in the context of the surface–atmosphere radiation budget. To facilitate the development and evaluation of ESA's EarthCARE production model prior to launch, sophisticated instrument simulators were developed to produce realistic synthetic EarthCARE measurements for simulated conditions provided by cloud-resolving models. While acknowledging that the physical and radiative representations of cloud, aerosol, and precipitation in the test scenes are based on numerical models, the opportunity to perform detailed evaluations wherein the "truth" is known provides insights into the performance of EarthCARE's instruments and retrieval algorithms. This level of omniscience will not be available for the evaluation of in-flight EarthCARE retrieval products, even during validation activities coordinated with ground-based and airborne measurements. In this study, we compare EarthCARE retrieval products both statistically across all simulated scenes and from a specific time series from a single scene. For ice clouds, it is shown that retrieved profiles of ice water content and effective particle size made by the ATLID-CPR-MSI cloud, aerosols, and precipitation (ACM-CAP) synergistic algorithm are consistently more accurate than those from its single-instrument counterparts. While liquid clouds are often difficult to detect from satellite-borne sensors, especially for multi-layered clouds, ACM-CAP benefits from combined constraints from lidar backscatter, solar radiances, and radar-path-integrated attenuation but still exhibits non-trivial random error. For precipitation retrievals, the CPR cloud and precipitation product (C-CLD) and ACM-CAP have a similar performance when well-constrained by CPR measurements. The greatest differences are in coverage, with ACM-CAP reporting retrievals in the melting layer, and in heavy precipitation, where CPR signals are dominated by multiple scattering and attenuation. Aerosol retrievals from ATLID compensate for a high degree of measurement noise in a number of ways, with the ATLID extinction, backscatter, and depolarisation (A-EBD) product and ACM-CAP demonstrating similar performance. The multi-spectral imager (MSI) cloud optical properties (M-COP) product performs very well for unambiguous cloud layers. Similarly, the MSI aerosol optical thickness (M-AOT) product performs well when radiances are unaffected by cloud, but both products provide little information about vertical profiles of properties. The Earth Cloud, Aerosol and Radiation Explorer (EarthCARE) is the first mission that will provide measurements from active profiling, passive imaging and a broadband radiometer from a single satellite platform. The passive multi-spectral imager (MSI) features four solar and three thermal infrared channels, and has a swath of 150 km and a spatial pixel resolution of 500 m. The MSI observations will provide across-track information on clouds and aerosol to extend the active profiling information into the swath. In this paper, we present the algorithm used for retrieving the cloud optical and physical products (M-COP), specifically cloud optical thickness, effective radius and top height. The algorithm is based on the solar and terrestrial MSI channels within an optimal estimation framework. This framework enables full error propagation given by the uncertainties in measurements and a priori information. The Earth Cloud, Aerosol and Radiation Explorer (EarthCARE) is a combination of multiple active and passive instruments on a single platform. The Atmospheric Lidar (ATLID) provides vertical information of clouds and aerosol particles along the satellite track. In addition, the Multi-Spectral Imager (MSI) collects multi-spectral information from the visible to the infrared wavelengths over a swath width of 150 km across the track. The ATLID–MSI Column Products processor (AM-COL) described in this paper combines the high vertical resolution of the lidar along track and the horizontal resolution of the imager across track to better characterize a three-dimensional scene. ATLID Level 2a (L2a) data from the ATLID Layer Products processor (A-LAY), MSI L2a data from the MSI Cloud Products processor (M-CLD) and the MSI Aerosol Optical Thickness processor (M-AOT), and MSI Level 1c (L1c) data are used as input to produce the synergistic columnar products: the ATLID–MSI Cloud Top Height (AM-CTH) and the ATLID–MSI Aerosol Column Descriptor (AM-ACD). The coupling of ATLID (measuring at 355 nm) and MSI (at ≥670 nm) provides multi-spectral observations of the aerosol properties. In particular, the Ångström exponent from the spectral aerosol optical thickness (AOT 355/670 nm) adds valuable information for aerosol typing. The AOT across track, the Ångström exponent and the dominant aerosol type are stored in the AM-ACD product. The accurate detection of the cloud top height (CTH) with lidar is limited to the ATLID track. The difference in the CTH detected by ATLID and retrieved by MSI is calculated along track. The similarity of MSI pixels across track with those along track is used to transfer the calculated CTH difference to the entire MSI swath. In this way, the accuracy of the CTH is increased to achieve the EarthCARE mission's goal of deriving the radiative flux at the top of the atmosphere with an accuracy of 10 W m -2 for a 100 km 2 snapshot view of the atmosphere. The synergistic CTH difference is stored in the AM-CTH product. The quality status is provided with the products. It depends, e.g., on day/night conditions and the presence of multiple cloud layers. The algorithm was successfully tested using the common EarthCARE test scenes. Two definitions of the CTH from the model truth cloud extinction fields are compared: an extinction-based threshold of 20 Mm -1 provides the geometric CTH, and a cloud optical thickness threshold of 0.25 describes the radiative CTH. The high-spectral-resolution Atmospheric Lidar (ATLID) on the Earth Cloud, Aerosol and Radiation Explorer (EarthCARE) provides vertically resolved information on aerosols and clouds with unprecedented accuracy. Together with the Cloud Profiling Radar (CPR), the Multi-Spectral Imager (MSI), and the Broad-Band Radiometer (BBR) on the same platform, it allows for a new synergistic view on atmospheric processes related to the interaction of aerosols, clouds, precipitation, and radiation at the global scale. This paper describes the algorithms for the determination of cloud top height and aerosol layer information from ATLID Level 1b (L1b) and Level 2a (L2a) input data. The ATLID L2a Cloud Top Height (A-CTH) and Aerosol Layer Descriptor (A-ALD) products are developed to ensure the provision of atmospheric layer products in continuation of the heritage from the Cloud–Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations (CALIPSO). Moreover, the products serve as input for synergistic algorithms that make use of data from ATLID and MSI. Therefore, the products are provided on the EarthCARE joint standard grid (JSG). A wavelet covariance transform (WCT) method with flexible thresholds is applied to determine layer boundaries from the ATLID Mie co-polar signal. Strong features detected with a horizontal resolution of 1 JSG pixel (approximately 1 km) or 11 JSG pixels are classified as thick or thin clouds, respectively. The top height of the uppermost cloud layer together with information on cloud layering are stored in the A-CTH product for further use in the generation of the ATLID-MSI Cloud Top Height (AM-CTH) synergy product. Aerosol layers are detected as weaker features at a resolution of 11 JSG pixels. Layer-mean optical properties are calculated from the ATLID L2a Extinction, Backscatter and Depolarization (A-EBD) product and stored in the A-ALD product, which also contains the aerosol optical thickness (AOT) of each layer, the stratospheric AOT, and the AOT of the entire atmospheric column. The latter parameter is used to produce the synergistic ATLID-MSI Aerosol Column Descriptor (AM-ACD) later in the processing chain. Several quality criteria are applied in the generation of A-CTH and A-ALD, and respective information is stored in the products. The functionality and performance of the algorithms are demonstrated by applying them to common EarthCARE test scenes. The EarthCARE mission aims to probe the Earth's atmosphere by measuring cloud and aerosol profiles using its active instruments, the Cloud Profiling Radar (CPR) and ATmospheric LIDar (ATLID). The correct identification of hydrometeors and aerosols from atmospheric profiles is an important step in retrieving the properties of clouds, aerosols and precipitation. Ambiguities in the nature of atmospheric targets can be removed using the synergy of collocated radar and lidar measurements, which is based on the complementary spectral response of radar and lidar relative to atmospheric targets present in the profiles. The instruments are sensitive to different parts of the particle size distribution and provide independent but overlapping information in optical and microwave wavelengths. ATLID is sensitive to aerosols and small cloud particles, and CPR is sensitive to large ice particles, snowflakes and raindrops. It is therefore possible to better classify atmospheric targets when collocated radar and lidar measurements exist compared to using a single instrument. The cloud phase, precipitation and aerosol type within the column sampled by the two instruments can then be identified. ATLID-CPR target classification (AC-TC) is the product created for this purpose by combining the ATLID target classification (A-TC) and CPR target classification (C-TC). AC-TC is crucial for the subsequent synergistic retrieval of cloud, aerosol and precipitation properties. AC-TC builds upon previous target classifications using CloudSat and CALIPSO synergy while providing richer target classification using the enhanced capabilities of EarthCARE's instruments, specifically CPR's Doppler velocity measurements to distinguish snow and rimed snow from ice clouds and ATLID's lidar ratio measurements to objectively discriminate between different aerosol species and optically thin ice clouds. In this paper, we first describe how the single-instrument A-TC and C-TC products are derived from ATLID and CPR measurements. Then the AC-TC product, which combines the A-TC and C-TC classifications using a synergistic decision matrix, is presented. Simulated EarthCARE observations based on combined cloud-resolving and aerosol model data are used to test the processors generating the target classifications. Finally, the target classifications are evaluated by quantifying the fractions of ice and snow, liquid clouds, rain, and aerosols in the atmosphere that can be successfully identified by each instrument and their synergy. We show that radar–lidar synergy helps better detect ice and snow, with ATLID detecting radiatively important optically thin cirrus and cloud tops, while CPR penetrates most deep and highly concentrated ice clouds. The detection of rain and drizzle is entirely due to C-TC, while that of liquid clouds and aerosols is due to A-TC. The evaluation also shows that simple assumptions can be made to compensate for when the instruments are obscured by extinction (ATLID) or surface clutter and multiple scattering (CPR); this allows for the recovery of the majority of liquid cloud not detected by the active instruments. The Hybrid End-To-End Aerosol Classification (HETEAC) model for the Earth Clouds, Aerosols and Radiation Explorer (EarthCARE) mission is introduced. The model serves as the common baseline for the development, evaluation, and implementation of EarthCARE algorithms. It guarantees the consistency of different aerosol products from the multi-instrument platform and facilitates the conformity of broad-band optical properties needed for EarthCARE radiative-closure assessments. While the hybrid approach ensures that the theoretical description of aerosol microphysical properties is consistent with the optical properties of the measured aerosol types, the end-to-end model permits the uniform representation of aerosol types in terms of microphysical, optical, and radiative properties. Four basic aerosol components with prescribed microphysical properties are used to compose various natural and anthropogenic aerosols of the troposphere. The components contain weakly and strongly absorbing fine-mode and spherical and non-spherical coarse-mode particles and thus are representative for pollution, smoke, sea salt, and dust, respectively. Their microphysical properties are selected such that good coverage of the observational phase space of intensive, i.e., concentration-independent, optical aerosol properties derived from EarthCARE measurements is obtained. Mixing rules to calculate optical and radiative properties of any aerosol blend composed of the four basic components are provided. Applications of HETEAC in the generation of test scenes, the development of retrieval algorithms for stand-alone and synergistic aerosol products from EarthCARE's atmospheric lidar (ATLID) and multi-spectral imager (MSI), and for radiative-closure assessments are introduced. Finally, the implications of simplifying model assumptions and possible improvements are discussed, and conclusions for future validation and development work are drawn. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The EarthCARE satellite mission's objective is to retrieve profiles of the aerosol and water cloud physical properties using the combination of cloud-profiling radar (CPR), high spectral resolution UV lidar (ATLID), and passive multi-spectral spectral imager (MSI) data. Based on synergistic retrievals using data from these instruments, the 3D atmospheric cloud/aerosol state is estimated, which then are used to forward modelled radiative properties, which may then be compared to co-incident broad band radiometer (BBR) measurements. A high spectral resolution lidar enables the independent retrieval of extinction and backscatter but, being space-based, suffers from relatively high signal-to-noise levels. The ATLID FeatureMask (A-FM) product provides a probability mask for the existence of atmospheric features within the lidar profiles. Next to this, it also identifies those regions where the lidar beam has been fully attenuated and when the surface has impacted the measured lidar backscatter signals. From the pixels assigned as clear sky with no features present above, the clear sky averaged profiles for the three ATLID channels, the co-polar Mie channel, the total cross channel and the co-polar Rayleigh channel, are created. These 'feature-free' or 'clear-sky' profiles are useful for e.g. the quality of the ATLID l1 attenuated backscatters. The scientific goals of the A-FM product is to guide smoothing strategies within the ATLID profile retrieval algorithm which is one step further in the EarthCARE L2 processing chain. As a secondary product a frame-by-frame evaluation of the ATLID L1b cross talk calibration can be preformed by comparing the retrieved clear sky profiles to the expected channel profiles. The A-FM algorithm has been evaluated thoroughly using the synthetic test scenes. The A-FM product has been applied to both synthetic data from the EarthCARE end-to-end simulator (ECSIM) ass well as ALADIN L1 data from the Aeolus wind-lidar mission. Comparisons against the ECSIM model truth indicate A-FM has a percentage correctness >0.9 and is capable of reliably detecting aerosol and cloud regions with extinctions > 1E-5 m-1. This two-part study addresses the development of reliable estimates of the mass and fall speed of single ice particles and ensembles. Part I of the study reports temperature-dependent coefficients for the mass-dimensional relationship, m = a[D.sup.b], where D is particle maximum dimension. The fall velocity relationship, [V.sub.1] = [AD.sub.B], is developed from observations in synoptic and low-latitude, convectively generated, ice cloud layers, sampled over a wide range of temperatures using an assumed range for the exponent b. Values for a, A, and B were found that were consistent with the measured particle size distributions (PSD) and the ice water content (IWC). To refine the estimates of coefficients a and b to fit both lower and higher moments of the PSD and the associated values for A and B, Part II uses the PSD from Part I plus coincident, vertically pointing Doppler radar returns. The observations and derived coefficients are used to evaluate earlier, single-moment, bulk ice microphysical parameterization schemes as well as to develop improved, statistically based, microphysical relationships. They may be used in cloud and climate models, and to retrieve cloud properties from ground-based Doppler radar and spaceborne, conventional radar returns.
