We employ molecular dynamics simulations to investigate ion and water transport driven by an electric field through quasi-two-dimensional nanoslits with a tapered geometry. Despite the absence of surface charge on the channel walls and the associated electric double layer, we do observe a robust ion selectivity. This selectivity favors the transport of cations from base to tip when the electric field is directed from base to tip, and anions from base to tip when the field direction is reversed. Additionally, we observe a corresponding electro-osmotic water flow from base to tip, regardless of the electric field direction. Intriguingly, ion selectivity and electro-osmotic flow are conventionally associated with surface charge and electric double layers. However, in uncharged tapered nanoslits, we uncover a novel mechanism for these phenomena, where ion selectivity arises from the divergence of the heterogeneous water polarization., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures + supplementary material (8 pages, 11 figures)

The intrinsic Helmholtz free-energy functional, the centerpiece of classical density functional theory (cDFT), is at best only known approximately for 3D systems. Here we introduce a method for learning a quasi-exact neural-network approximation of this functional by exclusively training on a dataset of radial distribution functions, circumventing the need to sample costly heterogeneous density profiles in a wide variety of external potentials. For a supercritical 3D Lennard-Jones system, we demonstrate that the learned neural free-energy functional accurately predicts planar inhomogeneous density profiles under various complex external potentials obtained from simulations., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures + supplementary material (7 pages, 4 figures)

While important for many industrial applications, chemical reactions responsible for charging of solids in water are often poorly understood. We theoretically investigate the charging kinetics of solid-liquid interfaces, and find that the time-dependent equilibration of surface charge contains key information not only on the reaction mechanism, but also on the valency of the reacting ions. We construct a non-linear differential equation describing surface charging by combining chemical Langmuir kinetics and electrostatic Poisson-Boltzmann theory. Our results reveal a clear distinction between late-time (near-equilibrium) and short-time (far-from-equilibrium) relaxation rates, the ratio of which contains information on the charge valency and ad- or desorption mechanism of the charging process. Similarly, we find that single-ion reactions can be distinguished from two-ion reactions as the latter show an inflection point during equilibration. Interestingly, such inflection points are characteristic of autocatalytic reactions, and we conclude that the Coulombic ion-surface interaction is an autocatalytic feedback mechanism., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, Supplemental Material: 4 pages, 2 figures

Sedimentation is a ubiquitous phenomenon across many fields of science, such as geology, astrophysics, and soft matter. Sometimes, sedimentation leads to unusual phenomena, such as the Brazil-nut effect, where heavier (granular) particles reside on top of lighter particles after shaking. We show experimentally that a Brazil-nut effect can be realised in a binary colloidal system of long-range repulsive charged particles driven purely by Brownian motion and electrostatics without the need for activity. Using theory, we argue that not only the mass-per-charge for the heavier particles needs to be smaller than the mass-per-charge for the lighter particles, but that at high overall density, the system can be trapped in a long-lived metastable state, which prevents the occurrence of the equilibrium Brazil-nut effect. Therefore, we envision that our work provides valuable insights into the physics of strongly interacting systems, such as partially glassy and crystalline structures. Finally, our theory, which quantitatively agrees with the experimental data, predicts that the shapes of sedimentation density profiles of multicomponent charged colloids are greatly altered when the particles are charge regulating with more than two ion species involved. Hence, we hypothesise that sedimentation experiments can aid in revealing the type of ion-adsorption processes that determine the particle charge and possibly the value of the corresponding equilibrium constants., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures. Fluidic devices exhibiting ion current rectification (ICR), or ionic diodes, are of broad interest for applications including desalination, energy harvesting, and sensing, amongst others. For such applications a large conductance is desirable which can be achieved by simultaneously using thin membranes and wide pores. In this paper we demonstrate ICR in micron sized conical channels in a thin silicon membrane with pore diameters comparable to the membrane thickness but both much larger than the electrolyte screening length. We show that for these pores the entrance resistance is not only key to Ohmic conductance around 0 V, but also for understanding ICR, both of which we measure experimentally and capture within a single analytic theoretical framework. The only fit parameter in this theory is the membrane surface potential, for which we find that it is voltage dependent and its value is excessively large compared to literature. From this we infer that surface charge outside the pore strongly contributes to the observed Ohmic conductance and rectification by a different extent. We experimentally verify this hypothesis in a small array of pores and find that ICR vanishes due to pore-pore interactions mediated through the membrane surface, while Ohmic conductance around 0 V remains unaffected. We find that the pore-pore interaction for ICR is set by a long-ranged decay of the concentration which explains the surprising finding that the ICR vanishes for even a sparsely populated array with a pore-pore spacing as large as 7 $\mu$m., Comment: 30 pages, 6 figures, Supplementary Information: 13 pages, 9 figures

Using both analytic and numerical analyses of the Poisson-Nernst-Planck equations we theoretically investigate the electric conductivity of a conical channel, which in accordance with recent experiments exhibits a strong non-linear pressure dependence. This mechanosensitive diodic behavior stems from the pressure-sensitive build-up or depletion of salt in the pore. From our analytic results we find that the optimal geometry for this diodic behavior strongly depends on the flow rate, the ideal ratio of tip-to-base-radii being equal to 0.22 at zero flow. With increased flow this optimal ratio becomes smaller and simultaneously the diodic performance becomes weaker. Consequently an optimal diode is obtained at zero-flow, which is realized by applying a pressure drop that is proportional to the applied potential and to the inverse square of the tip radius thereby countering electro-osmotic flow. Understanding how electrolyte-filled porous electrodes respond to an applied potential is important to many electrochemical technologies. Here, we consider a model supercapacitor of two blocking cylindrical pores on either side of a cylindrical electrolyte reservoir. A stepwise potential difference $2\Phi$ between the pores drives ionic fluxes in the setup, which we study through the modified Poisson-Nernst-Planck equations, solved with finite elements. We focus our discussion on the dominant timescales with which the pores charge and how these timescales depend on three dimensionless numbers. Next to the dimensionless applied potential $\Phi$, we consider the ratio $R/R_b$ of the pore's resistance $R$ to the bulk reservoir resistance $R_b$ and the ratio $r_{p}/\lambda$ of the pore radius $r_p$ to the Debye length $\lambda$. We compare our data to theoretical predictions by Aslyamov and Janssen ($\Phi$), Posey and Morozumi ($R/R_b$), and Henrique, Zuk, and Gupta ($r_{p}/\lambda$). We study the dynamical steady-states of a monolayer of chemically active self-phoretic colloids as a function of packing fraction and self-propulsion speed by means of Brownian dynamics simulations. We focus on the case that a chemical field induces competing attractive positional and repulsive orientational interactions. Analyzing the distribution of cluster size and local density as well as the hexatic order parameter, we distinguish four distinct dynamical states which include collapsed, active gas, dynamical clustering, and motility-induced phase-separated states. The long-range chemical field-induced interactions shift the onset of motility-induced phase separation (MIPS) to very low packing fractions at intermediate self-propulsion speeds. We also find that the fraction of particles in the largest clusters is a suitable order parameter characterizing the dynamical phase transitions from an active gas or dynamical clustering steady-state to a phase-separated state upon increase of the packing fraction. The order parameter changes discontinuously when going from an active gas to a MIPS-like state at intermediate self-propulsion speeds, whereas it changes continuously at larger activities where the system undergoes a transition from a dynamical clustering state to MIPS-like state., Comment: 8 figures

Recent experiments and a series of subsequent theoretical studies suggest the occurrence of universal underscreening in highly concentrated electrolyte solutions. We performed a set of systematic Atomic Force Spectroscopy measurements for aqueous salt solutions in a concentration range from 1 mM to 5 M using chloride salts of various alkali metals as well as mixed concentrated salt solutions (involving both mono- and divalent cations and anions), that mimic concentrated brines typically encountered in geological formations. Experiments were carried out using flat substrates and submicrometer-sized colloidal probes made of smooth oxidized silicon immersed in salt solutions at pH values of 6 and 9 and temperatures of 25 {\deg}C and 45 {\deg}C. While strong repulsive forces were observed for the smallest tip-sample separations, none of the conditions explored displayed any indication of anomalous long range electrostatic forces as reported for macroscopic mica surfaces. Instead, forces are universally dominated by attractive van der Waals interactions at tip-sample separations of $\approx$2nm and beyond for salt concentrations of 1 M and higher. Complementary calculations based on classical density functional theory for the primitive model support these experimental observations and display a consistent decrease in screening length with increasing ion concentration.

In this work we theoretically study the differential capacitance of an aqueous electrolyte in contact with a planar electrode, using classical Density Functional Theory, and show how this measurable quantity can be used as a probe to better understand the structure and composition of the electric double layer at play. Specifically, we show how small trace amounts of divalent ions can influence the differential capacitance greatly, and also how small ions dominate its behaviour for high electrode potentials. In this study, we consider primitive model electrolytes, and not only use the standard definition of the differential capacitance, but also derive a new expression from mechanical equilibrium in a planar geometry. This expression reveals explicitly that the first layer of ions near the charged surface is key to its understanding. Our insights might be used as a guide in experiments to better understand the electrolyte-electrode interface as well as the (composition of the) bulk electrolyte.

We present a study of the structure and differential capacitance of electric double layers of aqueous electrolytes. We consider Electric Double Layer Capacitors (EDLC) composed of spherical cations and anions in a dielectric continuum confined between a planar cathode and anode. The model system includes steric as well as Coulombic ion-ion and ion-electrode interactions. We compare results of computationally expensive, but "exact", Brownian Dynamics (BD) simulations with approximate, but cheap, calculations based on classical Density Functional Theory (DFT). Excellent overall agreement is found for a large set of system parameters $-$ including variations in concentrations, ionic size- and valency-asymmetries, applied voltages, and electrode separation $-$ provided the differences between the canonical ensemble of the BD simulations and the grand-canonical ensemble of DFT are properly taken into account. In particular a careful distinction is made between the differential capacitance $C_N$ at fixed number of ions and $C_\mu$ at fixed ionic chemical potential. Furthermore, we derive and exploit their thermodynamic relations. In the future these relations are also useful for comparing and contrasting.

We propose a simple statistical-physics-inspired model for the effect of intrinsic fluctuations on supply and demand in markets. The model consists of agents that trade in two types of goods of which the total number is separately conserved. The relative preference of an individual agent for the two types of goods is determined by a utility that is identical for all agents. Market supply and demand curves are computed and compared for various motivated choices of the distribution of goods over the agents. In particular, we compare the "mean-field" case, in which all agents have the same number of goods and that is akin to the economics textbook case, to the case of Boltzmann-Gibbs distributed goods, in which agents have a fluctuating number of goods. We find that the resulting equilibrium prices are not equal for these two approaches, especially when a large fraction of the agents can neither buy nor sell.

The formally exact framework of equilibrium Density Functional Theory (DFT) is capable of simultaneously and consistently describing thermodynamic and structural properties of interacting many-body systems in arbitrary external potentials. In practice, however, DFT hinges on approximate (free-)energy functionals from which density profiles (and hence the thermodynamic potential) follow via an Euler-Lagrange equation. Here we explore a relatively simple Machine Learning (ML) approach to improve the standard mean-field approximation of the excess Helmholtz free energy functional of a 3D Lennard-Jones system at a supercritical temperature. The learning set consists of density profiles from grand-canonical Monte Carlo simulations of this system at varying chemical potentials and external potentials in a planar geometry only. Using the DFT formalism we nevertheless can extract not only very accurate 3D bulk equations of state but also radial distribution functions using the Percus test-particle method. Unfortunately, our ML approach did not provide very reliable Ornstein-Zernike direct correlation functions for small distances., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures

The charging and dissolution of mineral surfaces in contact with flowing liquids are ubiquitous in nature, as most minerals in water spontaneously acquire charge and dissolve. Mineral dissolution has been studied extensively under equilibrium conditions, even though non-equilibrium phenomena are pervasive and substantially affect the mineral-water interface. Here we demonstrate using interface-specific spectroscopy that liquid flow along a calcium fluoride surface creates a reversible, spatial charge gradient, with decreasing surface charge downstream of the flow. The surface charge gradient can be quantitatively accounted for by a reaction-diffusion-advection model, which reveals that the charge gradient results from a delicate interplay between diffusion, advection, dissolution, and desorption/adsorption. Comprehensive understanding of particle motion in microfluidic devices is essential to unlock novel technologies for shape-based separation and sorting of microparticles like microplastics, cells and crystal polymorphs. Such particles interact hydrodynamically with confining surfaces, thus altering their trajectories. These hydrodynamic interactions are shape-dependent and can be tuned to guide a particle along a specific path. We produce strongly confined particles with various shapes in a shallow microfluidic channel via stop flow lithography. Regardless of their exact shape, particles with a single mirror plane have identical modes of motion: in-plane rotation and cross-stream translation along a bell-shaped path. Each mode has a characteristic time, determined by particle geometry. Furthermore, each particle trajectory can be scaled by its respective characteristic times onto two master curves. We propose minimalistic relations linking these timescales to particle shape. The development of novel electrolytes and electrodes for supercapacitors is hindered by a gap of several orders of magnitude between experimentally measured and theoretically predicted charging timescales. Here, we propose an electrode model, containing many parallel stacked electrodes, that explains the slow charging dynamics of supercapacitors. At low applied potentials, the charging behavior of this model is described well by an equivalent circuit model. Conversely, at high potentials, charging dynamics slow down and evolve on two relaxation time scales: a generalized $RC$ time and a diffusion time, which, interestingly, become similar for porous electrodes. To study the role of torque in motility-induced phase separation (MIPS), we simulate a system of self-propelled particles whose shape varies smoothly from isotropic (disks/spheres) to weakly elongated (rods). We construct the phase diagrams of 2D active disks, 3D active spheres and 2D/3D active rods of aspect ratio $l/\sigma=2$. A stability analysis of the homogeneous isotropic phase allows us to predict the onset of MIPS based on the effective swimming speed and rotational diffusion of the particles. Both methods find suppression of MIPS as the particle shape is elongated. We propose a suppression mechanism based on the duration of collisions, and argue that this mechanism can explain both the suppression of MIPS found here for rodlike particles and the enhancement of MIPS found for particles with Vicsek interactions.

We present analytical solutions for the electrokinetics at a charged surface with both non-zero Stern-layer conductance and finite chemical reaction rates. We have recently studied the same system numerically [Werkhoven {\em et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 120}, 264502 (2018)], and have shown that an applied pressure drop across the surface leads to a non-trivial, laterally heterogeneous surface charge distribution at steady state. In this work, we linearise the governing electrokinetic equations to find closed expressions for the surface charge profile and the generated streaming electric field. The main results of our calculations are the identification of three important length and time scales that govern the charge distribution, and consequently the classification of electrokinetic systems into three distinct regimes. The three governing time scales can be associated to (i) the chemical reaction, (ii) diffusion in the Stern layer, and (iii) conduction in the Stern layer, where the dominating (smallest) time scale characterises the regime. In the reaction-dominated regime we find a constant surface charge with an edge effect, and recover the Helmholtz-Smoluchowski equation. In the other two regimes, we find that the surface charge heterogeneity extends over the entire surface, either linearly (diffusion-dominated regime) or nonlinearly (conduction-dominated regime)., Comment: Accepted for publication in European Physical Journal: Special Topics

We study the distribution of active, noninteracting particles over two bulk states separated by a ratchet potential. By solving the steady-state Smoluchowski equations in a flux-free setting, we show that the ratchet potential affects the distribution of particles over the bulks, and thus exerts an influence of infinitely long range. As we show, crucial for having such a long-range influence is an external potential that is nonlinear. We characterize how the difference in bulk densities depends on activity and on the ratchet potential, and we identify power law dependencies on system parameters in several limiting cases. While weakly active systems are often understood in terms of an effective temperature, we present an analytical solution that explicitly shows that this is not possible in the current setting. Instead, we rationalize our results by a simple transition state model, that presumes particles to cross the potential barrier by Arrhenius rates modified for activity. While this model does not quantitatively describe the difference in bulk densities for feasible parameter values, it does reproduce - in its regime of applicability - the complete power law behavior correctly., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

We study the effect of flexibility and bend angle on systems of hard semiflexible boomerangs. These are modelled as two rodlike segments joined at one end with an angle that can fluctuate about a preferred angle. We use a second-virial theory for semiflexible chains with two segments, and numerically solve for the full orientation distribution function as a function of the four angles that determine the boomerang's orientation. We plot the single segment distributions as a function of two angles as well as the interarm angle distribution. For stiff boomerangs, we find prolate, oblate, and biaxial nematic phases depending on the bend angle and density, in partial agreement with previous results on rigid boomerangs. For the case that the preferred interarm angle is $90^\circ$, however, we find that the biaxial nematic phase has four-fold rather than two-fold rotational symmetry, and thus requires fourth-rank order parameters to describe it. In addition, we find that flexibility drastically reduces the region of stability for the biaxial nematic phase, with the prolate nematic becoming more favourable., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures

The properties of polymer composites with nanofiller particles change drastically above a critical filler density known as the percolation threshold. Real nanofillers, such as graphene flakes and cellulose nanocrystals, are not idealized disks and rods but are often modeled as such. Here we investigate the effect of the shape of the particle cross section on the geometric percolation threshold. Using connectedness percolation theory and the second-virial approximation, we analytically calculate the percolation threshold of hard convex particles in terms of three single-particle measures. We apply this method to polygonal rods and platelets and find that the universal scaling of the percolation threshold is lowered by decreasing the number of sides of the particle cross section. Manipulation of the charge of the dielectric interface between two bulk liquids not only enables the adjustment of the interfacial tension but also controls the storage capacity of ions in the ionic double layers adjacent to each side of the interface. However, adjusting this interfacial charge by static external electric fields is difficult since the external electric fields are readily screened by ionic double layers that form in the vicinity of the external electrodes. This leaves the liquid-liquid interface, which is at a macroscopic distance from the electrodes, unaffected. In this study we show theoretically, in agreement with recent experiments, that control over this surface charge at the liquid-liquid interface is nonetheless possible for macroscopically large but finite closed systems in equilibrium, even when the distance between the electrode and interface is orders of magnitude larger than the Debye screening lengths of the two liquids. We identify a crossover system-size below which the interface and the electrodes are effectively coupled. Our calculations of the interfacial tension for various electrode potentials are in good agreement with recent experimental data.

We use computer simulations to study the existence and stability of a biaxial nematic $N_b$ phase in systems of hard polyhedral cuboids, triangular prisms, and rhombic platelets, characterized by a long ($L$), medium ($M$), and short ($S$) particle axis. For all three shape families, we find stable $N_b$ states provided the shape is not only close to the so-called dual shape with $M = \sqrt{LS}$ but also sufficiently anisotropic with $L/S>9,11,14, 23$ for rhombi, prisms, and cuboids, respectively, corresponding to anisotropies not considered before. Surprisingly, a direct isotropic-$N_b$ transition does not occur in these systems due to a destabilization of $N_b$ by a smectic (for cuboids and prisms) or a columnar (for platelets) phase at small $L/S$, or by an intervening uniaxial nematic phase at large $L/S$. We combine theory, numerical calculations, and experiments to accurately predict the motion of anisotropic particles in shallow microfluidic channels, in which the particles are strongly confined in the vertical direction. We formulate an effective quasi-two-dimensional description of the Stokes flow around the particle via the Brinkman equation, which can be solved in a time that is two orders of magnitude faster than the three-dimensional problem. The computational speedup enables us to calculate the full trajectories of particles in the channel. To test our scheme, we study the motion of dumbbell-shaped particles that are produced in a microfluidic channel using `continuous flow lithography'. Contrary to what was reported in earlier work (Uspal et al., Nature communications 4 (2013)), we find that the reorientation time of a dumbbell particle in an external flow exhibits a minimum as a function of its disk size ratio. Nanofiller particles, such as carbon nanotubes or metal wires, are used in functional polymer composites to make them conduct electricity. They are often not perfectly straight cylinders, but may be tortuous or exhibit kinks. Therefore we investigate the effect of shape deformations of the rodlike nanofillers on the geometric percolation threshold of the dispersion. We do this by using connectedness percolation theory within a Parsons-Lee type of approximation, in combination with Monte Carlo integration for the average overlap volume in the isotropic fluid phase. We find that a deviation from a perfect rodlike shape has very little effect on the percolation threshold, unless the particles are strongly deformed. This demonstrates that idealized rod models are useful even for nanofillers that superficially seem imperfect. The quest for designing new self-propelled colloids is fuelled by the demand for simple experimental models to study the collective behaviour of their more complex natural counterparts. Most synthetic self-propelled particles move by converting the input energy into translational motion. In this work we address the question if simple self-propelled spheres can assemble into more complex structures that exhibit rotational motion, possibly coupled with translational motion as in flagella. We exploit a combination of induced dipolar interactions and a bonding step to create permanent linear bead chains, composed of self-propelled Janus spheres, with a well-controlled internal structure. Next, we study how flexibility between individual swimmers in a chain can affect its swimming behaviour. Permanent rigid chains showed only active rotational or spinning motion, whereas longer semi-flexible chains showed both translational and rotational motion resembling flagella like-motion, in the presence of the fuel. Moreover, we are able to reproduce our experimental results using numerical calculations with a minimal model, which includes full hydrodynamic interactions with the fluid. Microorganisms are able to overcome the thermal randomness of their surroundings by harvesting energy to navigate in viscous fluid environments. In a similar manner, synthetic colloidal microswimmers are capable of mimicking complex biolocomotion by means of simple self-propulsion mechanisms. Although experimentally the speed of active particles can be controlled by e.g. self-generated chemical and thermal gradients, an in-situ change of swimming direction remains a challenge. In this work, we study self-propulsion of half-coated spherical colloids in critical binary mixtures and show that the coupling of local body forces, induced by laser illumination, and the wetting properties of the colloid, can be used to finely tune both the colloid's swimming speed and its directionality. We experimentally and numerically demonstrate that the direction of motion can be reversibly switched by means of the size and shape of the droplet(s) nucleated around the colloid, depending on the particle radius and the fluid's ambient temperature. Moreover, the aforementioned features enable the possibility to realize both negative and positive phototaxis in light intensity gradients. We develop a lattice-based Monte Carlo simulation method for charged mixtures capable of treating dielectric heterogeneities. Using this method, we study oil-water mixtures containing an antagonistic salt, with hydrophilic cations and hydrophobic anions. Our simulations reveal several phases with a spatially modulated solvent composition, in which the ions partition between water-rich and water-poor regions according to their affinity. Coulometric measurements on salt-water-immersed nanoporous carbon electrodes reveal, at a fixed voltage, a charge decrease with increasing temperature. During far-out-of-equilibrium charging of these electrodes, calorimetry indicates the production of both irreversible Joule heat and reversible heat, the latter being associated with entropy changes during electric double layer (EDL) formation in the nanopores. These measurements grant experimental access --for the first time-- to the entropic contribution of the grand potential; for our electrodes, this amounts to roughly 25% of the total grand potential energy cost of EDL formation at large applied potentials, in contrast with point-charge model calculations that predict 100%. We theoretically and experimentally investigate colloid-oil-water-interface interactions of charged, sterically stabilized, poly(methyl-methacrylate) colloidal particles dispersed in a low-polar oil (dielectric constant $\epsilon=5-10$) that is in contact with an adjacent water phase. In this model system, the colloidal particles cannot penetrate the oil-water interface due to repulsive van der Waals forces with the interface whereas the multiple salts that are dissolved in the oil are free to partition into the water phase. The sign and magnitude of the Donnan potential and/or the particle charge is affected by these salt concentrations such that the effective interaction potential can be highly tuned. We show that an electric field parallel to an electrically neutral surface can generate flow of electrolytic mixtures in small channels. We term this solvo-osmotic flow, since the flow is induced by the asymmetric preferential solvation of ions at the liquid-solid interface. The generated flow is comparable in magnitude to the ubiquitous electro-osmotic flow at charged surfaces, but for a fixed surface charge density, it differs qualitatively in its dependence on ionic strength. We extend Van't Hoff's law for the osmotic pressure to a suspension of active Brownian particles. The propelled particles exert a net reaction force on the solvent, and thereby either drive a measurable solvent flow from the connecting solvent reservoir through the semipermeable membrane, or increase the osmotic pressure and cause the suspension to rise to heights as large as micrometers for experimentally realized microswimmers described in the literature. The increase in osmotic pressure is caused by the background solvent being, in contrast to passive suspensions, no longer at the chemical potential of the solvent reservoir. A detailed comparison is made between different viewpoints on reversible heating in electric double layer capacitors. We derive a microscopic expression for a quantity $\mu$ that plays the role of chemical potential of Active Brownian Particles (ABPs) in a steady state in the absence of vortices. We show that $\mu$ consists of (i) an intrinsic chemical potential similar to passive systems, which depends on density and self-propulsion speed, but not on the external potential, (ii) the external potential, and (iii) a newly derived one-body swim potential due to the activity of the particles. Our simulations on active Brownian particles show good agreement with our Fokker-Planck calculations, and confirm that $\mu(z)$ is spatially constant for several inhomogeneous active fluids in their steady states in a planar geometry. Finally, we show that phase coexistence of ABPs with a planar interface satisfies not only mechanical but also diffusive equilibrium. We study how adsorption of a near-critical binary mixture in a nanopore is modified by flow inside the pore. We identify three types of steady states upon variation of the pore P\'{e}clet number (${\rm Pe}_p$), which can be reversibly accessed by the application of an external pressure. Interestingly, for small ${\rm Pe}_p$ the pore acts as a weakly selective membrane which separates the mixture. For intermediate ${\rm Pe}_p$, the flow effectively shifts the adsorption in the pore thereby opening possibilities for enhanced and tunable solute transport through the pore. For large ${\rm Pe}_p$, the adsorption is progressively reduced inside the pore, accompanied by a long ranged dispersion of the mixture far from the pore., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We report the formation of alternating strings and clusters in a binary suspension of repulsive charged colloids with double layers larger than the particle size. Within a binary cell model we include many-body and charge-regulation effects under the assumption of a constant surface potential, and consider their repercussions on the two-particle interaction potential. We find that the formation of induced dipoles close to a charge-reversed state may explain the formation of these structures. The ongoing scientific interest in the properties and structure of electric double layers (EDLs) stems from their pivotal role in (super)capacitive energy storage, energy harvesting, and water treatment technologies. Classical density functional theory (DFT) is a promising framework for the study of the in- and out-of-plane structural properties of double layers. Supported by molecular dynamics simulations, we demonstrate the adequate performance of DFT for analyzing charge layering in the EDL perpendicular to the electrodes. We discuss charge storage and capacitance of the EDL and the impact of screening due to dielectric solvents. We further calculate, for the first time, the in-plane structure of the EDL within the framework of DFT. While our out-of-plane results already hint at structural in-plane transitions inside the EDL, which have been observed recently in simulations and experiments, our DFT approach performs poorly in predicting in-plane structure in comparison to simulations. However, our findings isolate fundamental issues in the theoretical description of the EDL within the primitive model and point towards limitations in the performance of DFT in describing the out-of-plane structure of the EDL at high concentrations and potentials.

We show that the interaction of an oil-dispersed colloidal particle with an oil-water interface is highly tunable from attractive to repulsive, either by varying the sign of the colloidal charge via charge regulation, or by varying the difference in hydrophilicity between the dissolved cations and anions. In addition, we investigate the yet unexplored interplay between the self-regulated colloidal surface charge distribution with the planar double layer across the oil-water interface and the spherical one around the colloid. We use Onsager theory and the local density approximation to study sedimentation-diffusion equilibrium density profiles of binary mixtures of thick and thin hard rods. We construct stacking diagrams for three diameter ratios, and find that even a simple spindle-shaped phase diagram with only isotropic-nematic demixing can lead to counter-intuitive stacking sequences such as an isotropic phase sandwiched between two nematic phases. For the most complex phase diagram considered here, we find sixteen distinct stacking sequences, including several with five sedimented layers. By adding sedimentation paths to composition-pressure and density-density phase diagrams and calculating density and composition profiles, we show that conclusions about bulk phase diagrams of binary mixtures on the basis of sedimentation-diffusion equilibria should be drawn warily., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, extended discussion in section 4, added references, minor changes to figures (results unchanged)

We construct a phenomenological Landau-de Gennes theory for hard colloidal rods by performing an order parameter expansion of the chemical-potential dependent grand potential. By fitting the coefficients to known results of Onsager theory, we are not only able to describe the isotropic-nematic phase transition as function of density, including the well-known density jump, but also the isotropic-nematic planar interface. We theoretically study a vibrating pair of parallel electrodes bridged by a (deformed) liquid droplet, which is a recently developed microfluidic device to harvest vibrational energy. The device can operate with various liquids, including liquid metals, electrolytes, as well as ionic liquids. We numerically solve the Young-Laplace equation for all droplet shapes during a vibration period, from which the time-dependent capacitance follows that serves as input for an equivalent circuit model. We first investigate two existing energy harvesters (with a constant and a vanishing bias potential), for which we explain an open issue related to their optimal electrode separations, which is as small as possible or as large as possible in the two cases, respectively. Then we propose a new engine with a time-dependent bias voltage, with which the harvested work and the power can be increased by orders of magnitude at low vibration frequencies and by factors 2-5 at high frequencies, where frequencies are to be compared to the inverse RC-time of the circuit., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

We combine a general formulation of microswimmmer equations of motion with a numerical bead-shell model to calculate the hydrodynamic interactions with the fluid, from which the swimming speed, power and efficiency are extracted. From this framework, a generalized Scallop Theorem emerges. The applicability to arbitrary shapes allows for the optimization of the efficiency with respect to the swimmer geometry. We apply this scheme to `three-body swimmers' of various shapes and find that the efficiency is characterized by the single body friction coefficient in the long-arm regime, while in the short-arm regime the minimal approachable distance becomes the determining factor. Next, we apply this scheme to a biologically inspired swimmer that propels itself using a rotating helical flagellum. Electrostatic repulsions can drive crystallization in many-particle systems. For charged colloidal systems, the phase boundaries as well as crystal structure are highly tunable by experimental parameters such as salt concentration and pH. By using projections of the colloid-ion mixture to a system of (soft) repulsive spheres and the one-component plasma (OCP), we study the hitherto unexplained experimentally observed reentrant melting of electrostatically repelling colloids upon increasing the colloid density. We construct phase diagrams for charged rodlike colloids within the second-virial approximation as a function of rod concentration, salt concentration, and colloidal charge. Besides the expected isotropic-nematic transition, we also find parameter regimes with a coexistence between a nematic and a second, more highly aligned nematic phase including an isotropic-nematic-nematic triple point and a nematic-nematic critical point, which can all be explained in terms of the twisting effect. We compute the Frank elastic constants to see if the twist elastic constant can become negative, which would indicate the possibility of a cholesteric phase spontaneously forming. Although the twisting effect reduces the twist elastic constant, we find that it always remains positive. In addition, we find that for finite aspect-ratio rods the twist elastic constant is also always positive, such that there is no evidence of chiral symmetry breaking due to a uniaxial charge distribution., Comment: Added a reference to Sec. 4 and extended discussions in Secs. 4 and 7, results unchanged

Gold-capped Janus particles immersed in a near-critical binary mixture can be propelled using illumination. We employ a non-isothermal diffuse interface approach to investigate the self-propulsion mechanism of a single colloid. We attribute the motion to body forces at the edges of a micronsized droplet that nucleates around the particle. Thus, the often-used concept of a surface velocity cannot account for the self-propulsion. The particle's swimming velocity is related to the droplet shape and size, which is determined by a so-called critical isotherm. Two distinct swimming regimes exist, depending on whether the droplet partially or completely covers the particle. In continuation of our work in [A.P. Gantapara et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 015501 (2013)], we investigate here the thermodynamic phase behavior of a family of truncated hard cubes, for which the shape evolves smoothly from a cube via a cuboctahedron to an octahedron. We used Monte Carlo simulations and free-energy calculations to establish the full phase diagram. This phase diagram exhibits a remarkable richness in crystal and mesophase structures, depending sensitively on the precise particle shape. In addition, we examined in detail the nature of the plastic crystal (rotator) phases that appear for intermediate densities and levels of truncation. Our results allow us to probe the relation between phase behavior and building-block shape and to further the understanding of rotator phases. Furthermore, the phase diagram presented here should prove instrumental for guiding future experimental studies on similarly-haped nanoparticles and the creation of new materials., Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures

Building a general theoretical framework to describe the microscopic origin of macroscopic chirality in (colloidal) liquid crystals is a long-standing challenge. Here, we combine classical density functional theory with Monte Carlo calculations of virial-type coefficients, to obtain the equilibrium cholesteric pitch as a function of thermodynamic state and microscopic details. Applying the theory to hard helices, we observe both right- and left-handed cholesteric phases that depend on a subtle combination of particle geometry and system density. In particular, we find that entropy alone can even lead to a (double) inversion in the cholesteric sense of twist upon changing the packing fraction. We show how the competition between single-particle properties (shape) and thermodynamics (local alignment) dictates the macroscopic chiral behavior. Moreover, by expanding our free-energy functional we are able to assess, quantitatively, Straley's theory of weak chirality, used in several earlier studies. Furthermore, by extending our theory to different lyotropic and thermotropic liquid-crystal models, we analyze the effect of an additional soft interaction on the chiral behavior of the helices. Finally, we provide some guidelines for the description of more complex chiral phases, like twist-bend nematics. Our results provide new insights on the role of entropy in the microscopic origin of this state of matter.

Capacitive mixing (CAPMIX) and capacitive deionization (CDI) are promising candidates for harvesting clean, renewable energy and for the energy efficient production of potable water, respectively. Both CAPMIX and CDI involve water-immersed porous carbon (supercapacitors) electrodes at voltages of the order of hundreds of millivolts, such that counter-ionic packing is important for the electric double layer (EDL) which forms near the surface of these porous materials. Thus, we propose a density functional theory (DFT) to model the EDL, where the White-Bear mark II fundamental measure theory functional is combined with a mean-field Coulombic and a mean spherical approximation-type correction to describe the interplay between dense packing and electrostatics, in good agreement with molecular dynamics simulations. We discuss the concentration-dependent potential rise due to changes in the chemical potential in capacitors in the context of an over-ideal theoretical description and its impact on energy harvesting and water desalination. Compared to less elaborate mean-field models our DFT calculations reveal a higher work output for blue-energy cycles and a higher energy demand for desalination cycles.
