2. WetLinks: a Large-Scale Longitudinal Starlink Dataset with Contiguous Weather Data

Abstract

Low Orbit Satellite (LEO) networks such as Starlink promise Internet access everywhere around the world. In this paper, we present WetLinks - a large and publicly available trace-based dataset of Starlink measurements. The measurements were concurrently collected from two European vantage points over a span of six months. Consisting of approximately 140,000 measurements, the dataset comprises all relevant network parameters such as the upload and download throughputs, the RTT, packet loss, and traceroutes. We further augment the dataset with concurrent data from professional weather stations placed next to both Starlink terminals. Based on our dataset, we analyse Starlink performance, including its susceptibility to weather conditions. We use this to validate our dataset by replicating the results of earlier smaller-scale studies. We release our datasets and all accompanying tooling as open data. 3. Your Vulnerability Disclosure Is Important To Us: An Analysis of Coordinated Vulnerability Disclosure Responses Using a Real Security Issue

Abstract

It is a public secret that doing email securely is fraught with challenges. We found a vulnerability present at many email providers, allowing us to spoof email on behalf of many organisations. As email vulnerabilities are ten a penny, instead of focusing on yet another email vulnerability we ask a different question: how do organisations react to the disclosure of such a security issue in the wild? We specifically focus on organisations from the public and critical infrastructure sector who are required to respond to such notifications by law. We find that many organisations are difficult to reach when it concerns security issues, even if they have a security contact point. Additionally, our findings show that having policy in place improves the response and resolution rate, but that even with a policy in place, half of our reports remain unanswered and unsolved after 90~days. Based on these findings we provide recommendations to organisations and bodies such as ENISA to improve future coordinated vulnerability disclosure processes., Comment: 15 pages, 15 figures

4. This Is a Local Domain: On Amassing Country-Code Top-Level Domains from Public Data

Abstract

Domain lists are a key ingredient for representative censuses of the Web. Unfortunately, such censuses typically lack a view on domains under country-code top-level domains (ccTLDs). This introduces unwanted bias: many countries have a rich local Web that remains hidden if their ccTLDs are not considered. The reason ccTLDs are rarely considered is that gaining access -- if possible at all -- is often laborious. To tackle this, we ask: what can we learn about ccTLDs from public sources? We extract domain names under ccTLDs from 6 years of public data from Certificate Transparency logs and Common Crawl. We compare this against ground truth for 19 ccTLDs for which we have the full DNS zone. We find that public data covers 43%-80% of these ccTLDs, and that coverage grows over time. By also comparing port scan data we then show that these public sources reveal a significant part of the Web presence under a ccTLD. We conclude that in the absence of full access to ccTLDs, domain names learned from public sources can be a good proxy when performing Web censuses., Comment: 6 pages double-column, 4 figures; submitted to ACM SIGCOMM CCR

7. Preservice Teachers' Resilience during Times of COVID-19

Abstract

Becoming a teacher is difficult, especially in times of a crisis such as the COVID-19 pandemic. We investigated how preservice teachers (PSTs) experienced their resilience, and which factors influenced resilience during the pandemic. We were interested in the following factors: 1) personal resources such as motivation, efficacy and emotions, 2) contextual resources such as relationships and support of colleagues, 3) coping strategies such as problem solving and maintaining a work-life balance. A questionnaire with both open and closed questions was completed by 443 PSTs. Compared to previous studies that used the same instruments, PSTs showed lower scores on resilience and personal resources, comparable scores on contextual resources, and higher on coping strategies. A regression analysis showed that all factors except for self-efficacy were related to resilience. The open answers revealed different aspects influenced by the pandemic, such as conditions for teaching at school, interaction with pupils, study progress, support from supervisors in their school and the teacher education institute, and social support received from important others, such as family and friends. Furthermore, factors were mentioned that influenced PSTs resilience in both enhancing and diminishing ways. The findings provide more insight into how societal and environmental circumstances affect teacher resilience.

Abstract

We leverage large-scale DNS measurement data on authoritative name servers to study the reactions of domain owners affected by the 2016 DDoS attack on Dyn. We use industry sources of information about domain names to study the influence of factors such as industry sector and website popularity on the willingness of domain managers to invest in high availability of online services. Specifically, we correlate business characteristics of domain owners with their resilience strategies in the wake of DoS attacks affecting their domains. Our analysis revealed correlations between two properties of domains -- industry sector and popularity -- and post-attack strategies. Specifically, owners of more popular domains were more likely to re-act to increase the diversity of their authoritative DNS service for their domains. Similarly, domains in certain industry sectors were more likely to seek out such diversity in their DNS service. For example, domains categorized as General News were nearly 6 times more likely to re-act than domains categorized as Internet Services. Our results can inform managed DNS and other network service providers regarding the potential impact of downtime on their customer portfolio.

10. Rpkiller: Threat Analysis from an RPKI Relying Party Perspective

Abstract

The Resource Public Key Infrastructure (RPKI) aims to secure internet routing by creating an infrastructure where resource holders can make attestations about their resources. RPKI Certificate Authorities issue these attestations and publish them at Publication Points. Relying Party software retrieves and processes the RPKI-related data from all publication points, validates the data and makes it available to routers so they can make secure routing decisions. In this work, we create a threat model for Relying Party software, where an attacker controls a Certificate Authority and Publication Point. We implement a prototype testbed to analyse how current Relying Party software implementations react to scenarios originating from that threat model. Our results show that all current Relying Party software was susceptible to at least one of the identified threats. In addition to this, we also identified threats stemming from choices made in the protocol itself. Taken together, these threats potentially allow an attacker to fully disrupt all RPKI Relying Party software on a global scale. We performed a Coordinated Vulnerability Disclosure to the implementers and have made our testbed software available for future studies., Comment: 17 pages

11. Saving Brian's Privacy: the Perils of Privacy Exposure through Reverse DNS

Abstract

Given the importance of privacy, many Internet protocols are nowadays designed with privacy in mind (e.g., using TLS for confidentiality). Foreseeing all privacy issues at the time of protocol design is, however, challenging and may become near impossible when interaction out of protocol bounds occurs. One demonstrably not well understood interaction occurs when DHCP exchanges are accompanied by automated changes to the global DNS (e.g., to dynamically add hostnames for allocated IP addresses). As we will substantiate, this is a privacy risk: one may be able to infer device presence and network dynamics from virtually anywhere on the Internet -- and even identify and track individuals -- even if other mechanisms to limit tracking by outsiders (e.g., blocking pings) are in place. We present a first of its kind study into this risk. We identify networks that expose client identifiers in reverse DNS records and study the relation between the presence of clients and said records. Our results show a strong link: in 9 out of 10 cases, records linger for at most an hour, for a selection of academic, enterprise and ISP networks alike. We also demonstrate how client patterns and network dynamics can be learned, by tracking devices owned by persons named Brian over time, revealing shifts in work patterns caused by COVID-19 related work-from-home measures, and by determining a good time to stage a heist.

Abstract

Due to the COVID 19 pandemic, smartphone-based proximity tracing systems became of utmost interest. Many of these systems use BLE signals to estimate the distance between two persons. The quality of this method depends on many factors and, therefore, does not always deliver accurate results. In this paper, we present a multi-channel approach to improve proximity classification, and a novel, publicly available data set that contains matched IEEE 802.11 (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) and BLE signal strength data, measured in four different environments. We have developed and evaluated a combined classification model based on BLE and IEEE 802.11 signals. Our approach significantly improves the distance classification and consequently also the contact tracing accuracy. We are able to achieve good results with our approach in everyday public transport scenarios. However, in our implementation based on IEEE 802.11 probe requests, we also encountered privacy problems and limitations due to the consistency and interval at which such probes are sent. 26. Long-Term Outcomes of the Covered Endovascular Reconstruction of the Aortic Bifurcation (CERAB) Technique in Patients With Aorto-Iliac Occlusive Disease

Abstract

Background: The Covered Endovascular Reconstruction of the Aortic Bifurcation (CERAB) reconstruction is an endovascular technique, developed to reconstruct the aortic bifurcation in the most optimal anatomical and physiological manner. Short-term data were promising, but long-term data are still lacking. The objective was to report the long-term outcomes of CERAB for extensive aorto-iliac occlusive disease and to identify predictors for loss of primary patency.Methods: Consecutive electively treated patients with CERAB for aorto-iliac occlusive disease in a single hospital were identified and analyzed. Baseline and procedural data and follow-up were collected at 6-weeks, 6 months, 12 months, and annually thereafter. Technical success, procedural, and 30-day complications were evaluated, as well as overall survival. Patency and freedom from target lesion revascularization rates were analyzed using Kaplan Meier curves. Uni- and multivariate analysis were performed to identify possible predictors of failure.Results: One hundred and sixty patients were included (79 male). Indication for treatment was intermittent claudication for 121 patients (75.6%) and 133 patients (83.1%) had a TASC-II D lesion. Technical success was obtained in 95.6% of patients and the 30-day mortality rate was 1.3%. The 5-year primary, primary-assisted, and secondary patency rates were 77.5%, 88.1%, and 95.0%, respectively, with a freedom-from clinically driven target lesion revascularization (CD-TLR) rate of 84.4%. The strongest predictor of loss of primary patency of CERAB was a previous aorto-iliac intervention (odds ratio [OR]=5.36 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.30; 22.07), p=0.020). In patients not previously treated in the aorto-iliac tract, 5-year primary, primary assisted, and secondary patency rates were 85.1%, 94.4%, and 96.9%, respectively. At 5-year follow-up, an improved Rutherford was found in 97.9% of patients and the freedom from major amputation rate was 100%.Conclusion: The CERAB technique is related to good long-term outcomes, particularly in primary cases. In patients that had prior treatment for aorto-iliac occlusive disease, there were more reinterventions and therefore surveillance should likely be more intense.Clinical Impact The Covered Endovascular Reconstruction of the Aortic Bifurcation (CERAB) reconstruction was designed to improve outcomes of endovascular treatment of extensive aorto-iliac occlusive disease. At 5-year follow-up clinical improvement was found in 97.9% of patients without major amputations. The 5-year overall primary, primary-assisted, and secondary patency rates were 77.5%, 88.1%, and 95.0%, respectively, with a freedom-from clinically driven target lesion revascularization rate of 84.4%. Significantly better patency rates were observed for patients that were never treated before in the target area. The data implicate that CERAB are a valid treatment option for patients with extensive aorto-iliac occlusive disease. For patients previously treated in the target area, other treatment options might be considered, or more intensive follow-up surveillance is warranted.

Abstract

In mainstream culture, the horror genre is frequently looked down upon as trivial, shlocky and nasty – horror films are seen as being cheap to make, made for a younger, mass audience, and horror films tend to dwell on society's taboos, phobias and anxieties. Horror can also be a conservative genre – racist, misogynistic and queer phobic – enforcing rules that lead to horrible endings for characters that are non-white, queer or who are women. However, the horror genre also has the potential to be progressive, subversive and critical. We argue that if horror can rethink and renegotiate the meaning of gender, race, politics and power, then so should law. Despite the longevity of feminist legal theoretical recognition of intersectionality, the law still has an outdated and conservative conceptualisation of the legal subject and of its audience – for whom the law is written. Through our reading of the trajectory of the figure of the Final Girl, we argue that the law should see the evolution of the horror genre as a didactic text. We draw upon the insights of transformations of the Final Girl over recent decades and the remaking of the cultural imagination, to argue that the legal imagination likewise needs to be transformed. 30. Changes in Sensed Dis/Continuity in the Development of Student Teachers throughout Teacher Education

Abstract

Initiatives aimed at supporting student teachers for entering and staying in the teaching profession require a better understanding of the nature of student teachers' development as it unfolds during teacher education. Accordingly, we focused on changes in the extent to which student teachers perceive and expect dis/continuity in their development during the programme. The design of the study included 25 authentic supervision dialogues/conversations, enabling the analysis of development within and across six student teachers' developmental trajectories. Findings showed that student teachers' initial sense of dis/continuity is not necessarily predictive of progress and (un)successful completion of teacher education. Furthermore, sensed dis/continuity varies differently over time in student teachers, both in terms of when it changes as well as in terms of with what types of past perceptions and future expectations these changes occur.

39. Long-term changes in ecosystem functioning of a coastal bay expected from a shifting balance between intertidal and subtidal habitats

Abstract

Coastal areas are subjected to several anthropogenic stressors with much of the world's intertidal areas receding due to human activities, coastal erosion and sea level rise. The Dutch Eastern Scheldt (ES) has been predicted to lose around 35% of intertidal areas by 2060. This study investigates differences between biogeochemical fluxes of intertidal and subtidal sediments of the ES and assesses how ongoing erosion may modify the sedimentary ecosystem functioning of this coastal bay in the coming decades. Monthly fluxes and porewater concentrations of dissolved inorganicnitrogen (DIN), phosphorous (DIP), silica (DSi), carbon (DIC) and oxygen (O 2) as well as organic matter (OM) characteristics were measured from intertidal and subtidal sediments from June 2016–December 2017. Compared to subtidal stations, OM was significantly more reactive in intertidal samples and exhibited 37% higher O2 fluxes, suggesting a strong influence from microphytobenthos. Subtidal sedimentsexhibited an average efflux of nitrates (0.28 mmol m−2 d −1) and phosphates (0.09 mmol m−2 d−1) into the water column, while intertidal areas displayed average influxes (nitrates = −1.2 mmol m−2 d−1, phosphates = −0.03 mmol m−2 d−1) directed into the sediment. The calculated removal of total DIN and DIP from the water column was 34–38% higher in intertidal compared to subtidal samples suggesting stronger denitrification and phosphorus adsorption to solid particles from intertidal sediments. As an upscaling exercise, we estimate potential erosion induced changes if the ES stations are representative for the system. With this assumption, we estimate 11% and 8% reductions for respective nitrogen and phosphorus removal in the entire ES by 2060. Given the global observations of eroding intertidal areas and rising sea levels, we suggest that the predicted habitat loss may cause significant changes

The Eastern Scheldt estuary in the Netherlands has been anthropogenically changed by the construction of a storm surge barrier about 30 years ago, affecting abiotic conditions as well as phytoplankton and zooplankton (ZP). As ZP communities have not been sampled in the last decades, it is unclear to what extent they have changed during the last 30 years. We analyzed the micro- and mesoZP composition and background parameters at eight stations in the Eastern Scheldt in spring, summer, and autumn 2018. Additionally, we conducted dilution experiments to estimate phytoplankton growth and microZP grazing rates. Seasonal variability of ZP was higher than spatial variability, but there were differences between stations. In agreement with data from the 1980s, we identified salinity and chlorophyll a as the most important factors in explaining the ZP community. Suspended particulate matter and water retention time were additionally identified for mesoZP, as well as dissolved inorganic nitrogen and phosphate concentration for microZP. We observed some changes in ZP composition with respect to the 1980s, most of which could be explained by the changes induced by the barrier construction. However, increased abundances of the cyclopoid copepod Oithona sp. were likely related to changes in phytoplankton composition due to large-scale bivalve cultivation in the estuary. Phytoplankton growth and microZP grazing rates were variable between seasons, which could be explained by changes in the phytoplankton community during the annual plankton succession. Overall, the observed alterations in the ZP community due to changed background parameters and intense bivalve filtration could affect the microbial loop as well as consumers of mesoZP and thus the functioning of the pelagic food web.

47. Are male patients undergoing bariatric surgery less healthy than female patients?

Abstract

Male patients are underrepresented in bariatric surgery (BS) despite a relatively equal proportion of men and women experiencing obesity. Differences in frequency and severity of obesity-associated medical problems (OAMPs) between men and women undergoing BS or in a control group (HELIUS [HEalthy Life In an Urban Setting]) were evaluated. The hypothesis was that men undergoing BS are less healthy than women. A cross-sectional study of 2 cohorts undergoing BS in 2013 (BS2013) and 2019 (BS2019) and a control group of patients with severe obesity from a general population (HELIUS). Characteristics concerning weight and OAMPs, medication usage, intoxications, postoperative complications (for BS2019) were compared between men and women. Members of the HELIUS cohort were tested for eligibility for BS. Of 3244 patients included, the majority were female (>78.4%). Median (interquartile range) age and body mass index (kg/m2) in male versus female patients were 47.0 (41.0–53.8) versus 43.0 (36.0–51.0) years and 41.5 (38.4–45.2) versus 42.3 (40.2–45.9), respectively, in BS2013, and 52.0 (39.8–57.0) versus 45.0 (35.0–53.0) years and 40.4 (37.4–43.8) versus 41.3 (39.0–44.1) in BS2019 (P <.05). The rates of men with OAMPs were 71.4% and 82.0% compared with 50.2% and 56.9% of women in BS2013 and BS2019, respectively. Overall medication usage was higher in male patients (P =.014). In BS2019, male patients exhibited a higher median HbA1C (P <.001) and blood pressure (P =.003) and used more antihypertensives and antidiabetics (P =.004). Postoperative complications did not differ between men and women. In the control cohort, 66.5% of men and 66.6% of women were eligible for BS. Men undergoing BS more often experience OAMPs than women, and OAMPs are more advanced in men. Abstract

Students in many teacher education programmes experience confusion about portfolios. This study investigated whether using an analogy in the introduction of a portfolio helps teacher education students understand both the purpose of a portfolio and how to compile it. It was also investigated whether these students' understanding correlates with their appreciation of portfolios. In the analogy, portfolios were compared with job application letters, curricula vitae and the references that are common in selection procedures for new employees. This analogy was helpful in promoting students' understanding. Their understanding correlated with their appreciation of this instrument.
