Abstract

The problem of representing text documents within an Information Retrieval system is formulated as an analogy to the problem of representing the quantum states of a physical system. Lexical measurements of text are proposed as a way of representing documents which are akin to physical measurements on quantum states. Consequently, the representation of the text is only known after measurements have been made, and because the process of measuring may destroy parts of the text, the document is characterised through erasure. The mathematical foundations of such a quantum representation of text are provided in this position paper as a starting point for indexing and retrieval within a "quantum like" Information Retrieval system.

Abstract

Simple representations of documents based on the occurrences of terms are ubiquitous in areas like Information Retrieval, and also frequent in Natural Language Processing. In this work we propose a logical-probabilistic approach to the analysis of natural language text based in the concept of Uncertain Conditional, on top of a formulation of lexical measurements inspired in the theoretical concept of ideal quantum measurements. The proposed concept can be used for generating topic-specific representations of text, aiming to match in a simple way the perception of a user with a pre-established idea of what the usage of terms in the text should be. A simple example is developed with two versions of a text in two languages, showing how regularities in the use of terms are detected and easily represented., Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures. Abstract

A novel way to define Quantum like measurements for text is through transformations called Selective Erasers. When applied to text, an Eraser acts like a filter and preserves part of the information of the document (tokens surrounding a central term) and erases the rest. In this paper, we describe how inclusion relations between Erasers can be used to construct an Eraser Lattice for relevant content. It is posited that given a new piece of text, the application of elements of the Eraser Lattice, will result in the destruction or preservation of the content depending on the relevancy of the document. The paper provides the theoretical derivations required to perform such transformations, along with some example applications, before outlining directions and challenges of future work.

1. INTRODUCTION A great many words in natural languages are ambiguous. The resolution of ambiguity is a task that has concerned a great many researchers in the field of computational […], We present an analysis of word senses that provides a fresh insight into the impact of word ambiguity on retrieval effectiveness with potential broader implications for other processes of information retrieval. Using a methodology of forming artificially ambiguous words, known as pseudowords, and through reference to other researchers' work, the analysis illustrates that the distribution of the frequency of occurrence of the senses of a word plays a strong role in ambiguity's impact on effectiveness. Further investigation shows that this analysis may also be applicable to other processes of retrieval, such as Cross Language Information Retrieval, query expansion, retrieval of OCR'ed texts, and stemming. The analysis appears to provide a means of explaining, at least in part, reasons for the processes' impact (or lack of it) on effectiveness. Abstract

Semantic Space models, which provide a numerical representation of words’ meaning extracted from corpus of documents, have been formalized in terms of Hermitian operators over real valued Hilbert spaces by Bruza et al. [1]. The collapse of a word into a particular meaning has been investigated applying the notion of quantum collapse of superpositional states [2]. While the semantic association between words in a Semantic Space can be computed by means of the Minkowski distance [3] or the cosine of the angle between the vector representation of each pair of words, a new procedure is needed in order to establish relations between two or more Semantic Spaces. We address the question: how can the distance between different Semantic Spaces be computed? By representing each Semantic Space as a subspace of a more general Hilbert space, the relationship between Semantic Spaces can be computed by means of the subspace distance. Such distance needs to take into account the difference in the dimensions between subspaces. The availability of a distance for comparing different Semantic Subspaces would enable to achieve a deeper understanding about the geometry of Semantic Spaces which would possibly translate into better effectiveness in Information Retrieval tasks.

Abstract

Testability is defined as the probability that a program will fail a test, conditional on the program containing some fault. In this paper, we show that statements about the testability of a program can be more simply described in terms of assumptions on the probability distribution of the failure intensity of the program. We can thus state general acceptance conditions in clear mathematical terms using Bayesian inference. We develop two scenarios, one for software for which the reliability requirements are that the software must be completely fault-free, and another for requirements stated as an upper bound on the acceptable failure probability.
