1. The Effects of the Jump-In Whole-School Intervention on the Weight Development of Children in Amsterdam, the Netherlands

Abstract

Background: This study assessed the effects of the "Jump-in" whole-school intervention in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, on children's weight development by comparing children exposed to the intervention and controls from 3 other large Dutch cities. Jump-in is a comprehensive intervention that aims to stimulate healthy nutrition and physical activity in children at primary schools in Amsterdam. In addition, the relationship between the intervention's implementation degree and its effectiveness was studied. Methods: Demographic and anthropometric data, collected by youth health care professionals via routine health checks at T0 (2014) and T1 (2019), were used to analyze possible intervention effects by comparing the weight development of children exposed to the Jump-in intervention versus unexposed controls. Implementation logs from health promotion professionals were used to determine intervention effects per implementation degree. Multilevel regression analyses were used for all analyses. Results: In total, 4299 children were included mean age ± 5.5 years (T0), 10.6 years (T1), and [approximately equal to] 50% boys/girls at both times. Receiving the fully implemented intervention resulted in a decline in standardized body-mass index (zBMI) compared to the controls (-0.23, confidence interval [CI] -0.33, -0.13). It also led to higher odds to move into a healthier weight category over time (odds ratio [OR] 1.36, CI 1.06, 1.74), yet no statistically significant shift towards a healthy weight was found. Conclusions: Relative to the controls, children exposed to the intervention showed positive zBMI developments, with stronger effects when the implementation degree was higher. Despite positive results, creating more impact might require the further integration of school-based programs into whole-systems approaches that include other energy-balance behaviors.

2. A Content Analysis and Comparison of Themes in Fiction with the Subject of an Alcoholic Parent Written for Children Ages Ten to Fourteen Years in the Sixties and in the Eighties. A Report.

Abstract

This study explored the themes in children's fiction with the subject of an alcoholic parent and evaluated the treatment of the subject in novels from the 1960s and the 1980s. It was hypothesized that, compared to writings from the 1960s, writings from the 1980s would more often contain references to the disease concept of alcoholism, would more frequently mention sources of help such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or adult resource people, and would more often present a resolution of the problem. The hypotheses were tested by a content analysis of themes in 10 novels from the 1960s and 10 novels from the 1980s. All novels were listed in "The Bookfinder" under the subject heading "Alcoholism, of Father" or "Alcoholism, of Mother" and were recommended for children between the ages of 10 and 14 years. The findings revealed that the disease concept of alcoholism received almost even coverage in both decades in 11 of 20 titles considered. There were more mentions of AA in the 1980s books and more mentions of Alateen in the 1960s books. There were almost twice as many effectual adults portrayed in the 1980s books than in the 1960s books. This is the most striking difference between the two decades. The findings suggest a movement in the 1980s toward more illustration of help for the alcoholic and the child, and the portrayal of adults as effectual, supportive, or directly involved. Abstract

This article suggests that to optimize performance and comply with environmental mandates, refiners should balance many operating parameters of the fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) unit. In a traditional FCC unit, increasing the catalyst-to-oil ratio to raise conversion also increases the coke yield and catalyst circulation to the regenerator. The new technology provides the ability to increase both conversion and selectivity by recycling a portion of the carbonized catalyst back to the base of the reactor riser. The carbonized catalyst circulated from the stripper to the base of the riser is at the same temperature as the reactor. With no heat being added to the system the recycle is heat-balance neutral. Thus the catalyst circulation up the riser can be varied independently front the catalyst circulation rate without increasing the catalyst circulation rate to the regenerator.

Abstract

This article focuses on new technologies that reduce gas make while minimizing product losses from catalytic cracking operations. Optimizing a fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) unit requires balancing many operating variables. Likewise, refiners must also operate within certain limits when it comes to process manipulation. These limits include feedstock quality, equipment capacity and system design. Over the past 20 years, FCC technology has significantly improved with regard to catalysts, equipment and process design.
