Simulated ammonium sulfate scrubber effluent was treated using bipolar membrane electrodialysis (BPMED) to recover sulfuric acid for reuse in the scrubber, and ammonium hydroxide as a product, without using any chemicals. The effect of pH and temperature of the feed solution on the energy consumption of the BPMED and the purity of the recovered acid and base were investigated in batch experiments. Experiments were conducted during a 3-hour period using a scrubber effluent with the following characteristics: 50 g/L ammonium sulfate, pH ranging from 1 to 5 and temperature ranging from 20 °C to 30 °C. The energy consumption at pH 5 was lower than that at pH 1, i.e., 6.9 MJ/kg SO42- and 7.7 MJ/kg SO42-, respectively. The purity of the acid recovered from the feed solution with a pH of 5 was 36 %, whereas the feed with a pH of 1 resulted in an acid purity of 72 %. These values corresponded to a mass of ammonia diffusion of 6.9 g and 2.3 g, respectively. The purity of the base recovered from the feed with a pH of 5 was 84 %, whereas this was 69 % for the feed with a pH of 1. Higher temperature of the feed solution, i.e., 30 °C compared to 20 °C, resulted in a lower energy consumption: 7.1 MJ/kg SO42- compared to 9.5 MJ/kg SO42−, respectively. The temperature had a very limited effect on the acid and base purities, with values ranging from 80 % to 82 % for the acid, and from 33 % to 36 % for the base. Thermal hydrolysis process (THP) is a widely used pre-treatment method in the anaerobic digestion (AD) of waste municipal sewage sludge. A post AD dewatering step of the digestate produces a liquid stream called reject water. THP increases the concentration of humic substances (HSs) and nutrients in the produced reject water. Struvite precipitation is a widely used technique to remove and (potentially) recover PO43− -P and the corresponding amount of total ammoniacal nitrogen from reject water. The chemical characteristics of the THP-produced HSs influence reaction yields and morphology of struvite. In our current study, struvite batch precipitation experiments were conducted at different pHs, and different concentrations of HSs, consisting of either melanoidins or humic acids. Our results showed that at pH 6.5 struvite precipitation was severely retarded. However, increased concentrations of melanoidins at pH 6.5 enhanced struvite precipitation. Batch experiments conducted at pH 7.25 and 8 with increased melanoidins concentrations showed PO43−-P precipitation yields over 86 %. Humic acids negatively impacted struvite precipitation at all analysed pH values, presumably because of Mg2+ complexation. Morphological analysis showed that the presence of both HSs affected Feret diameters, aspect ratio, and cleavage pattern of struvite. Also, HSs rendered coloured crystals. A biokinetic model based on BioWin's Activated Sludge Digestion Model (ASDM) coupled with a nitrous oxide (N2O) model was setup and calibrated for a full-scale wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) Amsterdam West, in the Netherlands. The model was calibrated using one year of continuous data to predict the seasonal variations of N2O emissions in the gaseous phase. This, according to our best knowledge, is the most complete full-scale data set used to date for this purpose. The results obtained suggest that the currently available biokinetic model predicted the winter, summer, and autumn N2O emissions well but failed to satisfactorily simulate the spring peak. During the calibration process, it was found that the nitrifier denitrification pathway could explain the observed emissions during all seasons while a combination of the nitrifier denitrification and incomplete heterotrophic denitrification pathways seemed to be dominant during the emissions peak observed during the spring season. Specifically, kinetic parameters related to free nitrous acid (FNA) displayed significant sensitivity leading to increased N2O production. The obtained values of two kinetic parameters, i.e., the FNA half-saturation during ammonia oxidising bacteria (AOB) denitrification and the FNA inhibition concentration related to heterotrophic denitrification, suggested a strong influence of the FNA bulk concentration on the N2O emissions and the observed seasonal variations. The study investigated the effects of long-chain fatty acids (LCFA) on anaerobic sludge treating lipid-rich wastewater. It involved batch experiments with three sludge samples: two acclimated to lipids and one non-acclimated. The experiments aimed to observe the degradation of LCFA, specifically oleate and palmitate, by dosing them at concentrations ranging from 50 to 600 mg/L. Measurements of the cumulative methane production and the LCFA concentration, quantified as fat, oil, and grease (FOG) were performed. To ensure the sludge was free from other biodegradable substrates, part of the samples was pre-incubated without feed. The tests were conducted with both pre-incubated and non-incubated inoculum sludge. The findings revealed that oleate was degraded more efficiently than palmitate across all sludge samples, with a greater conversion rate to methane. Sludge samples acclimated to lipids showed a superior capacity to degrade LCFA compared to non-acclimated ones. It was noted that at concentrations above 400 mg/L, the conversion of LCFAs to intermediate compounds was inhibited, although this did not affect the subsequent methane production. The study concludes with a recommendation for sludge adaptation strategies to boost the efficiency of anaerobic wastewater treatment systems dealing with lipid-rich waste. Faecal contamination across the lettuce value chain was assessed in Maputo, Mozambique. Escherichia coli was used as an indicator of faecal contamination, with concentrations ranging from 3.4 to 5.7 log units/100 ml in groundwater, river water and partially treated wastewater. Municipal tap water used to wash lettuce heads in the markets had lower than 1 log unit/100 ml. Irrespective of the source of irrigation water, the lettuce heads were contaminated throughout the value chain, with concentrations ranging between 6.5 and 7.8 log units/100 g. Thermal hydrolysis process (THP) is a well-established anaerobic digestion (AD) pre-treatment technology. Despite the THP benefits the pre-treatment increases the concentrations of nutrients and melanoidins in the digestate reject water after dewatering. The increased concentrations of nutrients and melanoidins formed during THP-AD can impact downstream processes, such as struvite precipitation and partial nitritation/anammox (PN/A). In our present work, six full-scale PN/A influents and effluents were sampled in The Netherlands (4 with THP and 2 without THP). Full-scale samples were characterised and the stoichiometric O2 consumption and melanoidins chelated to trace elements were analysed. The results showed that THP increased the concentration of total ammoniacal nitrogen (TAN), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total organic carbon (TOC), UVA 254 and colour, which are indicators of melanoidins occurrence. THP furthermore decreased the stoichiometric NO3−-N production from the PN/A reaction in effluents. The disparity between stoichiometric and measured NO3− -N in the THP-using plants was explained by the proliferation of denitrifiers. Moreover, denitrification improved the N removal efficiency due to the consumption of the stoichiometrically-produced NO3− -N. Also, the stoichiometric O2 consumption increased in the plants using THP, reaching up to 56% of the O2 used for partial oxidation of TAN. Trace elements analysis revealed that the plants with elevated concentrations of melanoidins in the effluent showed a high percentage of chelated multivalent cations, particularly transition metals such as Fe. Kendall correlation coefficient analysis showed that the chelation of multivalent cations was correlated mainly with colour occurrence in the reject waters. Bovine serum albumin (BSA) and casein (CAS) were used in batch tests to compare the protein degradation in the presence and absence of carbohydrates and volatile fatty acids (VFAs). The modified Gompertz model was applied to estimate reaction rates. The results showed that deamination was the rate-limiting step, with a rate ranging between 2.7 and 12.7 mgN·h−1. Higher protein structural complexity negatively affected protein hydrolysis, deamination, and methanogenesis by a factor of 1.6–3.8; whereas a higher protein concentration improved the conversion rates. A carbohydrate:protein COD ratio of 1 improved the hydrolysis rate of BSA from 26 mg·h−1 to 45 mg·h−1, and that of CAS from 98 mg·h−1 to 157 mg·h−1; whereas the deamination rate slightly decreased from 2.7 mg N·h−1 to 2.5 mg N·h−1 and from 6.0 mg N·h−1 to 5.6 mg N·h−1. This research investigated the contribution of wastewater-based nutrient supply, viz., nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P), and potassium (K), for lettuce production in the Infulene Valley, Mozambique, from July to September 2019. The research was conducted in groundwater- and wastewater-irrigated agricultural plots. Water samples were collected weekly, soil samples were collected before planting and after harvest, and lettuce samples were collected at harvest time. The nutrient content (N, P, and K) was measured, and a mass balance method was applied. Wastewater had distinctly higher nutrient contents than groundwater, which guaranteed crop nutrition during the growing stage. Wastewater contributed 88%, 96%, and 97% to the N, P, and K requirements, respectively. The crop yield in the wastewater-irrigated areas was 43,8 ± 16 tons/ha, which was higher than 35 ± 8 tons/ha observed for the groundwater-irrigated areas, but results showed no statistically significant differences. Conclusively, wastewater led to reduced soil-nutrient gap and can be a source of nutrients. This study reports the effects of microaeration on a laboratory-scale AnMBR (MA-AnMBR) fed with synthetic concentrated domestic sewage. The imposed oxygen load mimics the oxygen load coming from a dissolved air flotation (DAF) unit, establishing an anaerobic digester-DAF (AD-DAF) combination with sludge recycling. Results showed a reduced COD concentration in the MA-AnMBR permeate compared with the AnMBR permeate, from 90 to 74 mgCOD L–1, and a concomitant 27% decrease in biogas production. The MA-AnMBR permeate ammonium (NH4+) concentration increased by 35%, to 740 mgNH4+-N L–1, indicating a rise in the hydrolytic capacity. Furthermore, the MA-AnMBR biomass seemingly adapted to an increased oxygen load, which corresponded to 1% of the influent COD load (approximately 55 mLO2 d–1). Concomitantly, an increase in the superoxide dismutase activity (SOD) of biomass was detected. Meanwhile, negligible changes were observed in the specific methanogenic activity (SMA) of the microaerated biomass that was subjected to an oxygen load equivalent to 3% of the influent COD load in batch tests. Biogas production from anaerobic sludge digestion plays a central role for wastewater treatment plants to become more energy-efficient or even energy-neutral. Dedicated configurations have been developed to maximize the diversion of soluble and suspended organic matter to sludge streams for energy production through anaerobic digestion, such as A-stage treatment or chemically enhanced primary treatment (CEPT) instead of primary clarifiers. Still, it remains to be investigated to what extent these different treatment steps affect the sludge characteristics and digestibility, which may also impact the economic feasibility of the integrated systems. In this study, a detailed characterization has been performed for sludge obtained from primary clarification (primary sludge), A-stage treatment (A-sludge) and CEPT. The characteristics of all sludges differed significantly from each other. The organic compounds in primary sludge consisted mainly of 40% of carbohydrates, 23% of lipids, and 21% of proteins. A-sludge was characterized by a high amount of proteins (40%) and a moderate amount of carbohydrates (23%), and lipids (16%), while in CEPT sludge, organic compounds were mainly 26% of proteins, 18% of carbohydrates, 18% of lignin, and 12% of lipids. The highest methane yield was obtained from anaerobic digestion of primary sludge (347 ± 16 mL CH4/g VS) and A-sludge (333 ± 6 mL CH4/g VS), while it was lower for CEPT sludge (245 ± 5 mL CH4/g VS). Furthermore, an economic evaluation has been carried out for the three systems, considering energy consumption and recovery, as well as effluent quality and chemical costs. Energy consumption of A-stage was the highest among the three configurations due to aeration energy demand, while CEPT had the highest operational costs due to chemical use. Energy surplus was the highest by the use of CEPT, resulting from the highest fraction of recovered organic matter. Gas-mixing is commonly applied in anaerobic digesters, yet the resulting flow and hydraulic mixing are difficult to evaluate because of limited full-scale experimental data and uncertainties in integrating sludge rheological data. This study used computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to assess the impact of treated sludge rheology on flow and mixing characterisation in a full-scale biogas-mixed digester. The CFD model, which was firstly validated using a lab-scale setup, showed that flow and mixing predictions depended on the rheological properties, especially at low shear rates. The predicted dominant shear rate was out of the effective shear-rate range of the Ostwald model, leading to flow and mixing performance overestimation. The results indicated that there are limitations in applying the Ostwald model and the conventional approaches for determining dead-zone. The Herschel-Bulkley model was more appropriate for the prevailing low shear rates and predicted large viscosity gradients in the digester, indicating two distinct compartments with different flow and mixing behaviour based on the gas-sparging height: a plug-flow compartment with dominant vertical convection above, and a dead-zone compartment with considerable segregation below. The results showed that the applied gas-sparging induced insufficient flow and mixing, but contributed to the well-functioning of the digester. To correctly assess flow and mixing, the applied rheological data should be in agreement with the type of sludge that is treated in the digester. Full-scale thermal hydrolysis processes (THP) showed an increase in nutrients release and formation of melanoidins, which are considered to negatively impact methanogenesis during mesophilic anaerobic digestion (AD). In this research, fractionation of THP-sludge was performed to elucidate the distribution of nutrients and the formed melanoidins over the liquid and solid sludge matrix. Degradation of the different fractions in subsequent AD was assessed, and the results were compared with non-pre-treated waste activated sludge (WAS). Results showed that the THP-formed soluble melanoidins were partially biodegradable under AD, especially the fraction with molecular weight under 1.1 kDa, which was related to protein-like substances. The use of THP in WAS increased the non-biodegradable soluble chemical oxygen demand (sCOD) after AD, from 1.1% to 4.9% of the total COD. The total ammoniacal nitrogen (TAN) concentration only slightly increased during THP without AD. However, after AD, TAN released was 34% higher in the THP-treated WAS compared to non-treated WAS, i.e., 36.7 ± 0.7 compared to 27.4 ± 0.4 mgTANreleased/gCODsubstrate, respectively. Results from modified specific methanogenic activities (mSMAs) tests showed that the organics solubilised during THP, were not inhibitory for acetotrophic methanogens. However, after AD of THP-treated sludge and WAS, the mSMA showed that all analysed samples presented strong inhibition on methanogenesis due to the presence of TAN and associated free ammonia nitrogen (FAN). In specific methanogenic activities (SMAs) tests with incremental concentration of TAN/FAN and melanoidins, TAN/FAN induced strong inhibition on methanogens, halving the SMA at around 2.5 gTAN/L and 100 mgFAN/L. Conversely, melanoidins did not show inhibition on the methanogens. Treating protein-rich wastewater using cost-effective and simple-structured single-stage reactors presents several challenges. In this study, we applied an anaerobic sequencing batch reactor (AnSBR) to treat protein-rich wastewater from a slaughterhouse. We focused on identifying the key factors influencing the removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and the settling performance of the sludge. The AnSBR achieved a maximum total COD removal of 90%, a protein degradation efficiency exceeding 80%, and a COD to methane conversion efficiency of over 70% at organic loading rates of up to 6.2 g COD L−1 d−1. We found that the variations in both the organic loading rate within the reactor and the hydraulic retention time in the buffer tank had a significant effect on COD removal. The hydraulic retention time in the buffer tank and the reactor, which determined the ammonification efficiencies and the residual carbohydrate concentrations in the reactor liquid, affected the sludge settleability. Furthermore, the genus Clostridium sensu stricto 1, known as protein- and lipids-degraders, was predominant in the reactor. Statistical analysis showed a significant correlation between the core microbiome and ammonification efficiency, highlighting the importance of protein degradation as the governing process in the treatment. Background: Elevated CO2 partial pressure (pCO2) has been proposed as a potential steering parameter for selective carboxylate production in mixed culture fermentation. It is anticipated that intermediate product spectrum and production rates, as well as changes in the microbial community, are (in)directly influenced by elevated pCO2. However, it remains unclear how pCO2 interacts with other operational conditions, namely substrate specificity, substrate-to-biomass (S/X) ratio and the presence of an additional electron donor, and what effect pCO2 has on the exact composition of fermentation products. Here, we investigated possible steering effects of elevated pCO2 combined with (1) mixed substrate (glycerol/glucose) provision; (2) subsequent increments in substrate concentration to increase the S/X ratio; and (3) formate as an additional electron donor. Results: Metabolite predominance, e.g., propionate vs. butyrate/acetate, and cell density, depended on interaction effects between pCO2–S/X ratio and pCO2–formate. Individual substrate consumption rates were negatively impacted by the interaction effect between pCO2–S/X ratio and were not re-established after lowering the S/X ratio and adding formate. The product spectrum was influenced by the microbial community composition, which in turn, was modified by substrate type and the interaction effect between pCO2–formate. High propionate and butyrate levels strongly correlated with Negativicutes and Clostridia predominance, respectively. After subsequent pressurized fermentation phases, the interaction effect between pCO2–formate enabled a shift from propionate towards succinate production when mixed substrate was provided. Bitumen fume condensate (BFC) is a hazardous wastewater generated at asphalt reclamation and production sites. BFC contains a wide variety of potentially toxic organic pollutants that negatively affect anaerobic processes. In this study, we chemically characterized BFC produced at an industrial site and evaluated its degradation under anaerobic conditions. Analyses identified about 900 compounds including acetate, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, phenolic compounds, and metal ions. We estimated the half maximal inhibitory concentrations (IC50) of methanogenesis of 120, 224, and 990 mgCOD·L−1 for three types of anaerobic biomass, which indicated the enrichment and adaptation potentials of methanogenic biomass to the wastewater constituents. We operated an AnMBR (7.0 L, 35 °C) for 188 days with a mixture of BFC, phenol, acetate, and nutrients. The reactor showed a maximum average COD removal efficiency of 87.7 ± 7.0 %, that corresponded to an organic conversion rate of 286 ± 71 mgCOD−1·L−1d−1. The microbial characterization of the reactor's biomass showed the acetoclastic methanogen Methanosaeta as the most abundant microorganism (43 %), whereas the aromatic and phenol degrader Syntrophorhabdus was continuously present with abundances up to 11.5 %. Fermentation at elevated hydrostatic pressure is a novel strategy targeting product selectivity. However, the role of inoculum history and cross-resistance, that is, acquired tolerance from incubation under distinctive environmental stress, remains unclear in high-pressure operation. In our here presented work, we studied fermentation and microbial community responses of halotolerant marine sediment inoculum (MSI) and anaerobic digester inoculum (ADI), pre-incubated in serum bottles at different temperatures and subsequently exposed to mild hydrostatic pressure (MHP; < 10 MPa) in stainless steel reactors. Results showed that MHP effects on microbial growth, activity, and community structure were strongly temperature-dependent. At moderate temperature (20°C), biomass yield and fermentation were not limited by MHP; suggesting a cross-resistance effect from incubation temperature and halotolerance. Low temperatures (10°C) and MHP imposed kinetic and bioenergetic limitations, constraining growth and product formation. Fermentation remained favorable in MSI at 28°C and ADI at 37°C, despite reduced biomass yield resulting from maintenance and decay proportionally increasing with temperature. Microbial community structure was modified by temperature during the enrichment, and slight differences observed after MHP-exposure did not compromise functionality. Results showed that the relation incubation temperature—halotolerance proved to be a modifier of microbial responses to MHP and could be potentially exploited in fermentations to modulate product/biomass ratio., Sanitary Engineering

The pre-treatment of waste activated sludge (WAS) has become more common since it often results in improved bioconversion to methane, in both rate and extent. However, thorough insights on the possible effects and mechanisms of mild pre-treatment techniques, such as temperatures <100 °C combined with the addition of H2O2, are still limited. This study reports the effects of the addition of 5–30 mgH2O2/g TS and its interaction with thermal pre-treatment at 70 °C on methane production, using WAS as the substrate. It was found that the addition of H2O2 increased the methane production rate, coinciding with a decrease in apparent viscosity of WAS, which probably improved mass transfer under non-ideal mixing conditions. While H2O2 solubilized proteins and carbohydrates and mineralized a small fraction of the humic substances in WAS, these biochemical transformations did not suffice to explain the observed extent and rate of methane production. A decreased particle size, the presence of Fenton's reagent, and the presence of cationic polymers in the WAS were discarded as the reasons for the observed decrease in apparent viscosity. It was concluded that the pre-treatment conditions applied in the present study might be a strategy to enhance mixing conditions in full-scale anaerobic digesters., Sanitary Engineering

Flux enhancers (FEs) have been successfully applied for fouling mitigation in membrane bioreactors. However, more research is needed to compare and optimise different dosing strategies to improve the filtration performance, while minimising the use of FEs and preventing overdosing. Therefore, the goal of this research is to develop an optimised control strategy for FE dosing into an AnMBR by developing a comprehensive integrated mathematical model. The integrated model includes filtration, flocculation, and biochemical processes to predict the effect of FE dosing on sludge filterability and membrane fouling rate in an AnMBR. The biochemical model was based on an ADM1, modified to include FEs and colloidal material. We developed an empirical model for the FE‐induced flocculation of colloidal material. Various alternate filtration models from the literature and our own empirical models were implemented, calibrated, and validated; the best alternatives were selected based on model accuracy and capacity of the model to predict the effect of varying sludge characteristics on the corresponding output, that is fouling rate or sludge filterability. The results showed that fouling rate and sludge filterability were satisfactorily predicted by the selected filtration models. The best integrated model was successfully applied in the simulation environment to compare three feedback and two feedforward control tools to manipulate FE dosing to an AnMBR. The modelling results revealed that the most appropriate control tool was a feedback sludge filterability controller that dosed FEs continuously, referred to as ∆R 20_10. Compared to the other control tools, application of the ∆R 20_10 controller resulted in a more stable sludge filterability and steady fouling rate, when the AnMBR was subject to specific disturbances. Treating petrochemical wastewater is a challenge for conventional anaerobic reactors. One example is coal gasification wastewater that, besides its salinity, is rich in toxic and inhibitory aromatics, such as phenol, cresols, and resorcinol. Studies have shown that phenol and p-cresol share the same degradation intermediates, whereas resorcinol is degraded via another route. This study investigated the simultaneous degradation of p-cresol or resorcinol with phenol under anaerobic saline conditions. Batch experiments with anaerobic phenol-degrading biomass were conducted to assess the feasibility of the degradation of p-cresol and resorcinol. Volumetric uptake rates of 11.4 ± 2.4 mgp-cresol·L–1d–1 and 4.2 ± 1.9 mgresorcinol·L–1d–1 were determined. The effect of p-cresol and resorcinol on the specific methanogenic activity and the cell viability in phenol-degrading and non-adapted biomass was assessed. Background: Pressurised anaerobic digestion allows the production of biogas with a high content of methane and, at the same time, avoid the energy costs for the biogas upgrading and injection into the distribution grid. The technology carries potential, but the research faces practical constraints by a.o. the capital investment needed in high-pressure reactors and sensors and associated sampling limitations. In this work, the kinetic model of an autogenerative high-pressure anaerobic digestion of acetate, as the representative compound of the aceticlastic methanogenesis route, in batch configuration, is proposed to predict the dynamic performance of pressurised digesters and support future experimental work. The modelling of autogenerative high-pressure anaerobic digestion in batch configuration, which is not extensively studied and simulated in the present literature, was developed, calibrated, and validated by using experimental results available from the literature. Results: Under high-pressure conditions, the assessment of the Monod maximum specific uptake rate, the half-saturation constant and the first-order decay rate was carried out, and the values of 5.9 kg COD kg COD−1 d−1, 0.05 kg COD m−3 and 0.02 d−1 were determined, respectively. By using the predicted values, excellent fittings of the final pressure, the CH4 molar fraction and the specific methanogenic yield calculation were obtained. Likewise, the variation in the gas–liquid mass transfer coefficient by several orders of magnitude showed negligible effects on the model predictive values in terms of methane molar fraction of the produced biogas, while the final pressure seemed to be slightly influenced. This study evaluated the effects of sludge retention time (SRT) on the membrane filtration performance of an anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) fed lipid-rich synthetic dairy wastewater. The membrane filtration performance was evaluated in two AnMBR systems operated at two different SRTs, i.e., 20 and 40 days. For the AnMBR operated at 40 days, SRT exhibited worse membrane filtration performance characterized by operational transmembrane pressures (TMP) exceeding the maximum allowed value and high total resistances to filtration (Rtotal). The sludge in the two reactors evaluated at the different SRTs showed similar sludge filterability properties. However, the sludge in the reactor operated at 40 days SRT was characterized by exhibiting the highest concentrations of: (i) total suspended solids (TSS), (ii) small-sized particles, (iii) extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), (iv) soluble microbial products (SMP), (v) fats, oils and grease (FOG), and (vi) long-chain fatty acids (LCFA). The cake layer resistance was the major contributor to the overall resistance to filtration. Gaseous ammonia (NH3) recovered from residual waters may be used as a fuel in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) to generate electricity without emission of undesirable oxidised nitrogen species. NH3 can be directly recovered from water as a gas by vacuum membrane stripping (VMS), which also results in the evaporation of water (H2O), leading to the recovery of NH3-H2O mixtures. However, in currently available literature, information is lacking on the NH3 concentrations in NH3-H2O mixtures that may be used as a fuel for an oxygen-conducting SOFC (SOFC-O). In this study, we assessed the effect of feed water temperature and the NH3 feed water concentration on the NH3 concentrations in gaseous VMS permeate. Besides, we assessed the feasibility to use NH3-H2O mixtures in the concentration range between 5 and 25 wt% for the generation of electricity in an SOFC-O. The results show that increasing the NH3 feed water concentration from 1 to 10 g∙L−1 increased the NH3 concentration in the gaseous VMS permeate from 1 wt% to up to 11 wt%. Increasing the feed water temperature from 25 to 35 °C also results in an increase in the NH3 concentration in the gaseous permeate, whereas increasing the feed water temperature from 35 °C to 55 °C leads to dilution of the VMS permeate. Furthermore, electricity was generated at an electrical efficiency of 43% in an SOFC-O when the NH3 concentration in the NH3-H2O fuel was only 5 wt%. Hence, according results on the obtained NH3 concentrations in the gaseous VMS permeate and the generation of electricity using dilute NH3-H2O mixtures as a fuel, VMS and SOFC-O can be combined for the generation of electricity from NH3 recovered from water. Moreover, the electrical energy generation of the SOFC-O, which reached values of 9 MJ∙kg-N−1, was higher than the electrical energy consumption for VMS, for which values of 7 MJ∙kg-N−1 were calculated., Sanitary Engineering

Conventional sewage treatment applying activated sludge processes is energy-intensive and requires great financial input, hampering widespread implementation. The introduction of anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBR) followed by an algal reactor growing species of commercial interest, may present an alternative, contributing to the envisaged resource recovery at sewage treatment plants. AnMBRs can be applied for organic matter removal with energy self-sufficiency, provided that effective membrane fouling management is applied. Haematococcus pluvialis, an algal species with commercial value, can be selected for ammonium and phosphate removal. Theoretical analysis showed that good pollutant removal, positive financial output, as well as a significant reduction in the amount of hazardous activated sludge can be achieved by applying the proposed process, showing interesting advantages over current sewage treatment processes. Recovery of ammonia (NH3) from residual waters offers various reuse opportunities, such as the production of fertilisers and the generation of electricity and heat. However, simultaneous evaporation of water (H2O) during NH3 stripping under vacuum results in diluted recovered NH3 gas with high H2O contents. Whereas porous gas-permeable membranes are already used for vacuum NH3 stripping, the use of non-porous silica-based pervaporation (PV) membranes showed promising results in recent literature, with respect to more selective transfer of NH3 compared to H2O. In this study, we assessed the selectivity of NH3 over H2O transfer (SNH3/H2O) for different types of membranes, under various hydraulic conditions and feed water compositions. The three following membranes were tested: a porous gas-permeable polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membrane, a hydrophilic (Hybrid Silica PV) membrane and a hydrophobic polydimethylsiloxane PV (PDMS PV) membrane. For the PTFE and the Hybrid Silica PV membrane, SNH3/H2O ranged between 0.1 and 0.4, indicating that the transfer of NH3 was consistently less preferred compared to the transfer of H2O. The preference for H2O over NH3 transfer through the membranes at various hydraulic conditions and feed water compositions can be assigned to the similarity in polarity and kinetic diameter of NH3 and H2O and the low relative concentration of NH3 in the used feed waters (approximately 0.1–1.0 wt%). The PDMS PV membrane showed negligible NH3 transfer and deteriorated rapidly during the NH3 stripping experiments. The SNH3/H2O of both gas-permeable and PV membranes was higher for unsteady than for steady hydraulic conditions. Phenol conversion under saline thermophilic anaerobic conditions requires the development and sustenance of a highly specialized microbial community. In the present research, an anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) fed with an influent containing 0.5 g·L−1 phenol and 6.5 gNa+·L−1 was operated at 55 °C for 300 days. Phenol degradation was limited when phenol was the sole substrate. However, the phenol removal efficiency significantly (p < 0.001) increased to 80 % corresponding to a conversion rate of 29 mgPhenol·gVSS−1d−1 when acetate (0.5 gCOD·L−1) was simultaneously provided. Isotopic analysis using 1–13C labeled acetate and measuring 13CH4 revealed that acetate was first oxidized to hydrogen and CO2, prior to methanogenesis, resulting in an increased abundance of hydrogenotrophic methanogens. It is hypothesized that the latter is of crucial importance for achieving effective anaerobic oxidation of phenol and its metabolites. Remarkably, the phenol conversion rate in the membrane-associated biomass was three times higher than in the suspended biomass. The observed difference in the conversion rate could be explained by the presence of an increased abundance of hydrogenotrophic methanogens in the membrane-associated biomass confirmed by a microbial community analysis of Archaea. Benzoate was measured in the permeate suggesting that phenol degradation occurred via the benzoyl-CoA pathway. The results of the current study suggest that syntrophic acetate oxidation coupled with hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis, which results in the presence of an abundant electron sink, plays a key role in enhancing thermophilic phenol degradation. Sugarcane bagasse (SCB) is increasingly considered as a potential source for bioenergy or bulk chemicals production. However, efficient pretreatment techniques need to be developed to make full use of its potential. A central composite design was employed to evaluate the effect of temperature (146.4–213.6 °C), NaOH concentration (0.7–2.3 M) and treatment time (3.2–36.8 min) on the hydrothermal pretreatment of SCB. Glucose was the abundant fermentable sugar released in the hydrolysate (4.0 g/L) and its concentration was significantly (p-value < 0.05) affected by temperature and NaOH concentration. Sugars released in the hydrolysate and the remaining cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin in the pretreated fiber were anaerobically co-digested in batch thermophilic assays (55 °C). Propionate, one of the most promising platform chemicals, was the main metabolite produced (0.5 g/L) and its concentration was significantly affected by temperature and NaOH concentration. Both NaOH concentration and pretreatment duration significantly affected methane composition in the biogas (p-value <0.05 and 0,10 respectively). Several problems associated with the presence of lipids in wastewater treatment plants are usually overcome by removing them ahead of the biological treatment. However, because of their high energy content, waste lipids are interesting yet challenging pollutants in anaerobic wastewater treatment and codigestion processes. The maximal amount of waste lipids that can be sustainably accommodated, and effectively converted to methane in anaerobic reactors, is limited by several problems including adsorption, sludge flotation, washout, and inhibition. These difficulties can be circumvented by appropriate feeding, mixing, and solids separation strategies, provided by suitable reactor technology and operation. In recent years, membrane bioreactors and flotation-based bioreactors have been developed to treat lipid-rich wastewater. In parallel, the increasing knowledge on the diversity of complex microbial communities in anaerobic sludge, and on interspecies microbial interactions, contributed to extend the knowledge and to understand more precisely the limits and constraints influencing the anaerobic biodegradation of lipids in anaerobic reactors. This critical review discusses the most important principles underpinning the degradation process and recent key discoveries and outlines the current knowledge coupling fundamental and applied aspects. Energy-rich sludge can be obtained from primary clarifiers preceding biological reactors. Alternatively, the incoming wastewater can be sent to a very-high-loaded activated sludge system, i.e., a so-called A-stage. However, the effects of applying an A-stage instead of a primary clarifier, on the subsequent sludge digestion for long-term operation is still unknown. In this study, biogas production and permeate quality, and filterability characteristics were investigated in a lab-scale anaerobic membrane bioreactor for primary sludge and A-stage sludge (A-sludge) treatment. A higher specific methane yield was obtained from digestion of A-sludge compared to primary sludge. Similarly, specific methanogenic activity was higher when the anaerobic membrane bioreactor was fed with A-sludge compared to primary sludge. Abstract: Protein-rich agro-industrial waste streams are high in organic load and represent a major environmental problem. Anaerobic digestion is an established technology to treat these streams; however, retardation of protein degradation is frequently observed when carbohydrates are present. This study investigated the mechanism of the retardation by manipulating the carbon source fed to a complex anaerobic microbiota and linking the reactor performance to the variation of the microbial community. Two anaerobic acidification reactors were first acclimated either to casein (CAS reactor) or lactose (LAC reactor), and then fed with mixtures of casein and lactose. Results showed that when lactose was present, the microbial community acclimated to casein shifted from mainly Chloroflexi to Proteobacteria and Firmicutes, the degree of deamination in the CAS reactor decreased from 77 to 15%, and the VFA production decreased from 75 to 34% of the effluent COD. A decrease of 75% in protease activity and 90% in deamination activity of the microbiota was also observed. The microorganisms that can ferment both proteins and carbohydrates were predominant in the microbial community, and from a thermodynamical point of view, they consumed carbohydrates prior to proteins. The frequently observed negative effect of carbohydrates on protein degradation can be mainly attributed to the substrate preference of these populations. Fermentation at elevated hydrostatic pressure is a novel strategy targeting product selectivity. However, the role of inoculum history and cross-resistance, that is, acquired tolerance from incubation under distinctive environmental stress, remains unclear in high-pressure operation. In our here presented work, we studied fermentation and microbial community responses of halotolerant marine sediment inoculum (MSI) and anaerobic digester inoculum (ADI), pre-incubated in serum bottles at different temperatures and subsequently exposed to mild hydrostatic pressure (MHP; < 10 MPa) in stainless steel reactors. Results showed that MHP effects on microbial growth, activity, and community structure were strongly temperature-dependent. At moderate temperature (20°C), biomass yield and fermentation were not limited by MHP; suggesting a cross-resistance effect from incubation temperature and halotolerance. Low temperatures (10°C) and MHP imposed kinetic and bioenergetic limitations, constraining growth and product formation. Fermentation remained favorable in MSI at 28°C and ADI at 37°C, despite reduced biomass yield resulting from maintenance and decay proportionally increasing with temperature. Microbial community structure was modified by temperature during the enrichment, and slight differences observed after MHP-exposure did not compromise functionality. Results showed that the relation incubation temperature—halotolerance proved to be a modifier of microbial responses to MHP and could be potentially exploited in fermentations to modulate product/biomass ratio., Sanitary Engineering

Flux enhancers (FEs) have been successfully applied for fouling mitigation in membrane bioreactors. However, more research is needed to compare and optimise different dosing strategies to improve the filtration performance, while minimising the use of FEs and preventing overdosing. Therefore, the goal of this research is to develop an optimised control strategy for FE dosing into an AnMBR by developing a comprehensive integrated mathematical model. The integrated model includes filtration, flocculation, and biochemical processes to predict the effect of FE dosing on sludge filterability and membrane fouling rate in an AnMBR. The biochemical model was based on an ADM1, modified to include FEs and colloidal material. We developed an empirical model for the FE‐induced flocculation of colloidal material. Various alternate filtration models from the literature and our own empirical models were implemented, calibrated, and validated; the best alternatives were selected based on model accuracy and capacity of the model to predict the effect of varying sludge characteristics on the corresponding output, that is fouling rate or sludge filterability. The results showed that fouling rate and sludge filterability were satisfactorily predicted by the selected filtration models. The best integrated model was successfully applied in the simulation environment to compare three feedback and two feedforward control tools to manipulate FE dosing to an AnMBR. The modelling results revealed that the most appropriate control tool was a feedback sludge filterability controller that dosed FEs continuously, referred to as ∆R 20_10. Compared to the other control tools, application of the ∆R 20_10 controller resulted in a more stable sludge filterability and steady fouling rate, when the AnMBR was subject to specific disturbances. The pre-treatment of waste activated sludge (WAS) has become more common since it often results in improved bioconversion to methane, in both rate and extent. However, thorough insights on the possible effects and mechanisms of mild pre-treatment techniques, such as temperatures <100 °C combined with the addition of H2O2, are still limited. This study reports the effects of the addition of 5–30 mgH2O2/g TS and its interaction with thermal pre-treatment at 70 °C on methane production, using WAS as the substrate. It was found that the addition of H2O2 increased the methane production rate, coinciding with a decrease in apparent viscosity of WAS, which probably improved mass transfer under non-ideal mixing conditions. While H2O2 solubilized proteins and carbohydrates and mineralized a small fraction of the humic substances in WAS, these biochemical transformations did not suffice to explain the observed extent and rate of methane production. A decreased particle size, the presence of Fenton's reagent, and the presence of cationic polymers in the WAS were discarded as the reasons for the observed decrease in apparent viscosity. It was concluded that the pre-treatment conditions applied in the present study might be a strategy to enhance mixing conditions in full-scale anaerobic digesters., Sanitary Engineering

Treating petrochemical wastewater is a challenge for conventional anaerobic reactors. One example is coal gasification wastewater that, besides its salinity, is rich in toxic and inhibitory aromatics, such as phenol, cresols, and resorcinol. The three following membranes were tested: a porous gas-permeable polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membrane, a hydrophilic (Hybrid Silica PV) membrane and a hydrophobic polydimethylsiloxane PV (PDMS PV) membrane. For the PTFE and the Hybrid Silica PV membrane, SNH3/H2O ranged between 0.1 and 0.4, indicating that the transfer of NH3 was consistently less preferred compared to the transfer of H2O. The preference for H2O over NH3 transfer through the membranes at various hydraulic conditions and feed water compositions can be assigned to the similarity in polarity and kinetic diameter of NH3 and H2O and the low relative concentration of NH3 in the used feed waters (approximately 0.1–1.0 wt%). The PDMS PV membrane showed negligible NH3 transfer and deteriorated rapidly during the NH3 stripping experiments. The SNH3/H2O of both gas-permeable and PV membranes was higher for unsteady than for steady hydraulic conditions. Gaseous ammonia (NH3) recovered from residual waters may be used as a fuel in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) to generate electricity without emission of undesirable oxidised nitrogen species. NH3 can be directly recovered from water as a gas by vacuum membrane stripping (VMS), which also results in the evaporation of water (H2O), leading to the recovery of NH3-H2O mixtures. However, in currently available literature, information is lacking on the NH3 concentrations in NH3-H2O mixtures that may be used as a fuel for an oxygen-conducting SOFC (SOFC-O). In this study, we assessed the effect of feed water temperature and the NH3 feed water concentration on the NH3 concentrations in gaseous VMS permeate. Besides, we assessed the feasibility to use NH3-H2O mixtures in the concentration range between 5 and 25 wt% for the generation of electricity in an SOFC-O. The results show that increasing the NH3 feed water concentration from 1 to 10 g∙L−1 increased the NH3 concentration in the gaseous VMS permeate from 1 wt% to up to 11 wt%. Increasing the feed water temperature from 25 to 35 °C also results in an increase in the NH3 concentration in the gaseous permeate, whereas increasing the feed water temperature from 35 °C to 55 °C leads to dilution of the VMS permeate. Furthermore, electricity was generated at an electrical efficiency of 43% in an SOFC-O when the NH3 concentration in the NH3-H2O fuel was only 5 wt%. Hence, according results on the obtained NH3 concentrations in the gaseous VMS permeate and the generation of electricity using dilute NH3-H2O mixtures as a fuel, VMS and SOFC-O can be combined for the generation of electricity from NH3 recovered from water. High salinity is becoming more common in industrial process water and final effluents, particularly when striving to close water loops. There is limited knowledge on the anaerobic treatment of chemical wastewaters characterized by distinct salinity fluctuations. This study investigates the high and fluctuating salinity effects on the conversion capacity and membrane filtration performance of an anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) in treating phenol-containing wastewater. The AnMBR operated for 180 days with sodium concentrations between 8 and 37 gNa+.L−1. At ≤ 26 gNa+.L−1, approximately 99% COD and phenol removal efficiencies were achieved. At 37 gNa+.L−1, phenol and COD removal efficiencies decreased to 86 and 82%, respectively, while the biomass specific methanogenic activity was 0.12 ± 0.05 gCOD-CH4.gVSS−1.d−1. Due to large salinity fluctuations, phenol and COD removal efficiencies reduced to ≤ 45% but recovered to ≥ 88%. Compared to phenol conversion, methanogenesis was more severely affected. Calculations showed a maximum in-situ phenol conversion rate of 25.5 mgPh.gVSS−1.d−1. Concomitantly, biomass integrity was compromised, and the median particle size severely dropped from 65.6 to 4.3 μm, resulting in a transmembrane pressure increase above 400 mbar. Cake layer resistance to filtration contributed to 85% of the total resistance. Nonetheless, all biomass was effectively retained in the AnMBR. A change in salinity ≥ 14 gNa+.L−1 substantially reduced the microbial richness and diversity. The microbial community was dominated by Bacteria belonging to Clostridiales and Archaea of the orders Methanosarcinales and Methanobacteriales. Aromatic compounds such as aromatic amines (AAs) or lignocellulose biomass derivatives are often recalcitrant to biological processes (i.e., anaerobic digestion). The level of recalcitrance is usually explained by the biochemical structure of the compounds, which determines their removal. AAs are present in dye wastewaters mainly originated from textile industries and are considered carcinogenic and challenging pollutants to be removed from wastewater. The hydrolysis of lignin leads to the formation of some aromatic compounds, which could be recalcitrant at certain concentrations and operation conditions. Similarly, derivatives from sugar degradation such as furfurals and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) from pentose and hexose degradation, respectively, have also been reported to be recalcitrant to anaerobic treatment. This chapter details the different forms of recalcitrance found and/or formed during wastewater and organic solid waste treatment, particularly in the anaerobic digestion process. Internal dry reforming of methane is envisaged as a possibility to reduce on capital and operation costs of biogas fuelled solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) system by using the CO2 present in the biogas. Due to envisaged internal dry reforming, the requirement for biogas upgrading becomes obsolete, thereby simplifying the system complexity and increasing its technology readiness level. However, impurities prevailing in biogas such as H2S have been reported in literature as one of the parameters which affect the internal reforming process in SOFCs. This research has been carried out to investigate the effects of H2S on internal dry reforming of methane on nickel-scandia-stabilised zirconia (Ni-ScSZ) electrolyte supported SOFCs. Results showed that at 800°C and a CH4:CO2 ratio of 2:3, H2S at concentrations as low as 0.125 ppm affects both the catalytic and electric performance of a SOFC. At 0.125 ppm H2S concentration, the CH4 reforming process is affected and it is reduced from over 95% to below 10% in 10 h. Therefore, future biogas SOFC cost reduction seems to become a trade-off between biogas upgrading for CO2 removal and biogas cleaning of impurities to facilitate efficient internal dry reforming., Sanitary Engineering, Energy Technology

The highly variable characteristics of waste activated sludge (WAS) hinder the comparison of experimental results on WAS bioconversion between the different studies that use excess sludge from different origin. Sludge grown under laboratory conditions with synthetic wastewater as feed showed high resistance to commonly applied pre-treatment techniques, such as thermal pre-treatment. However, a distinctly higher bioconversion of this sludge was recorded compared to WAS from a full-scale wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). The observed results casted concern on the suitability of the experimental laboratory-based data for practice. The physicochemical and biochemical characteristics of both WAS and lab-grown sludge are dependent on the wastewater characteristics or growth media on which the sludges were grown. The objective of this study was to formulate a growth medium that results into a lab-grown sludge which shows high similarity to the WAS coming from a specific full-scale WWTP in response to a pre-treatment technique. More specifically, in this study we targeted the formation of slowly-biodegradable lab-grown sludge that is similarly responsive to mild thermal pre-treatment with H2O2 addition. By comparing real and synthetic wastewaters, we discussed the various wastewater constituents that may lead to a higher degree of recalcitrance of the produced sludge. We then formulated a growth medium, which was fed to a lab-scale activated sludge reactor and evaluated the nutrient removal capacity, as well as the characteristics of the cultivated sludge before and after pre-treatment. Finally, the growth medium was modified to provoke a change in both the bioconversion and in the response to mild thermal pre-treatment. The influence of acidic and alkaline conditions on the solubilisation process of waste activated sludge (WAS) was investigated using HCl and NaOH at pH 2, 10, 11 and 12. The rise in concentration of solubilised compounds, the influence of reaction time, and the influence of the concentration of total solids (TS) during the solubilisation process were determined. Physical and chemical tests demonstrated that pre-treatment provided a release of compounds from the sludge floc matrix into the soluble fraction, characterising the solubilisation process. The highest degree of WAS solubilisation was observed when a pH of 12 was applied. Although largest effects were already attained after 0.25 h, WAS solubilisation continued reaching an increase in total dissolved solids by a factor 10.4 after 720 hrs. Under these conditions, the dissolved organic carbon (DOC), proteins, and carbohydrates resulted in releases up to 15, 40 and 41 times, respectively; phosphorus increased 5.7 times. Results indicate that by applying alkaline pre-treatment, higher TS concentrations can be treated per reactor volume compared to non-pre-treated WAS. Aerobic and anaerobic biodegradability tests showed increased bioconversion potentials in full-scale treatment plants. The respirometry tests ratify the improvement in solubilisation, with O2 consumption rates increasing 1.4 times, concomitant with an additional 261 mg·L-1 of the COD used, which represents 90% bioconversion of waste activated sludge. Hydrolysis is considered to be the rate-limiting step in anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge (WAS). In this study, an innovative 4 stages cascade anaerobic digestion system was researched to (1) comprehensively clarify whether cascading configuration enhances WAS hydrolysis, and to (2) better understand the governing hydrolysis kinetics in this system. The cascade system consisted of three 2.2 L ultra-short solids retention times (SRT) continuous stirred tank reactors (CSTRs) and one 15.4 L CSTR. The cascade system was compared with a reference conventional CSTR digester (22 L) in terms of process performance, hydrolytic enzyme activities and microbial community dynamics under mesophilic conditions (35 °C). The results showed that the cascade system achieved a high and stable total chemical oxygen demand (tCOD) reduction efficiency of 40–42%, even at 12 days total SRT that corresponded to only 1.2 days SRT each in the first three reactors of the cascade. The reference-CSTR converted only 31% tCOD into biogas and suffered process deterioration at the applied low SRTs. Calculated specific hydrolysis rates in the first reactors of the cascade system were significantly higher compared to the reference-CSTR, especially at the lowest applied SRTs. The activities of several hydrolytic enzymes produced in the different stages revealed that protease, cellulase, amino peptidases, and most of the tested glycosyl-hydrolases had significantly higher activities in the first three small digesters of the cascade system, compared to the reference-CSTR. This increase in hydrolytic enzyme production by far exceeded the increase in specific hydrolysis rate, indicating that hydrolysis was limited by solids-surface availability for enzymatic attack. Correspondingly, high relative abundances of hydrolytic-fermentative bacteria and hydrogenotrophic methanogens as well as the presence of syntrophic bacteria were found in the first three digesters of the cascade system. Volatile fatty acid accumulation is a sign of digester perturbation. Previous work showed the thermodynamic limitations of hydrogen and CO2 in syntrophic propionate oxidation under elevated partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2). Here we study the effect of directional selection under increasing substrate load as a strategy to restructure the microbial community and induce cross-protection mechanisms to improve glucose and glycerol conversion performance under elevated pCO2. After an adaptive laboratory evolution (ALE) process, viable cell density increased and predominant microbial groups were modified: an increase in Methanosaeta and syntrophic propionate oxidizing bacteria (SPOB) associated with the Smithella genus was found with glycerol as the substrate. A modest increase in SPOB along with a shift in the predominance of Methanobacterium toward Methanosaeta was observed with glucose as the substrate. The evolved inoculum showed affected diversity within archaeal spp. under 5 bar initial pCO2; however, higher CH4 yield resulted from enhanced propionate conversion linked to the community shifts and biomass adaptation during the ALE process. Moreover, the evolved inoculum attained increased cell viability with glucose and a marginal decrease with glycerol as the substrate. Results showed differences in terms of carbon flux distribution using the evolved inoculum under elevated pCO2: glucose conversion resulted in a higher cell density and viability, whereas glycerol conversion led to higher propionate production whose enabled conversion reflected in increased CH4 yield. Our results highlight that limited propionate conversion at elevated pCO2 resulted from decreased cell viability and low abundance of syntrophic partners. Total ammoniacal nitrogen (TAN) is considered to be a pollutant, but is also a versatile resource. This review presents an overview of the TAN recovery potentials from nitrogen (N)-loaded residual streams by discussing the sources, recovery technologies and potential applications. The first section of the review addresses the fate of TAN after its production. The second section describes the identification and categorisation of N-loaded (≥0.5 g L−1 of reduced N) residual streams based on total suspended solids (TSS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN), TAN, and TAN/TKN ratio. Category 1 represents streams with a low TAN/TKN ratio (<0.5) that need conversion of organic-N to TAN prior to TAN recovery, for example by anaerobic digestion (AD). Category 2 represents streams with a high TAN/TKN ratio (≥0.5) and high TSS (>1 g L−1) that require a decrease of the TSS prior to TAN recovery, whereas category 3 represents streams with a high TAN/TKN ratio (≥0.5) and low TSS (≤1 g L−1) that are suitable for direct TAN recovery. The third section focuses on the key processes and limitations of AD, which is identified as a suitable technology to increase the TAN/TKN ratio by converting organic-N to TAN. In the fourth section, TAN recovery technologies are evaluated in terms of the feed composition tolerance, the required inputs (energy, chemicals, etc.) and obtained outputs of TAN (chemical form, concentration, etc.). Finally, in the fifth section, the use of recovered TAN for three major potential applications (fertilizer, fuel, and resource for chemical and biochemical processes) is discussed. This review presents an overview of possible TAN recovery strategies based on the available technologies, but the choice of the recovery strategy shall ultimately depend on the product characteristics required by the application. Small-scale electrical power generation (<100 kW) from biogas plants to provide off-grid electricity is of growing interest. Currently, gas engines are used to meet this demand. Alternatively, more efficient small-scale solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) can be used to enhance electricity generation from small-scale biogas plants. Most electricity generators require a constant gas supply and high gas quality in terms of absence of impurities like H 2S. Therefore, to efficiently use the biogas from existing decentralized anaerobic digesters for electricity production, higher quality and stable biogas flow must be guaranteed. The installation of a biogas upgrading and buffer system could be considered; however, the cost implication could be high at a small scale as compared to locally available alterna-tives such as co-digestion and improved digester operation. Therefore, this study initially describes relevant literature related to feedstock pre-treatment, co-digestion and user operational practices of small-scale digesters, which theoretically could lead to major improvements of anaerobic digestion process efficiency. Accurate rheological characterisation of sewage waste activated sludge (WAS) is of high importance for downstream processing related to optimised sludge pumping and mixing, assessment of energy demands and overall process design. However, to elaborate rheological behaviour is often challenging under dynamic operational conditions in practice. In this study, two practical influencing factors were investigated: long-term shearing and temperature. Compared to anaerobic digestate (DGT), concentrated WAS had more complex and stronger thixotropic behaviour. Under the long-term shearing conditions, the sludge thixotropic behaviour was well characterised by two quantified limitation states. Temperature had a striking impact on the rheological properties, which was strongly correlated to solids content and digestion process. The impact discrepancy between the long-term shearing and temperature, implied different mechanisms to shift the equilibrium of hydrodynamic and non-hydrodynamic interactions for structure deformation and recovery. The distinct rheological properties between the two determined states were clearly reflected in pipe flow behaviour, revealing a concrete link between lab-measured sludge rheology and its practical flow performance. Fouling is a major challenge for the economic feasibility and applicability of membrane bioreactors. Several strategies have been proposed for fouling control, and among them, addition of flux enhancers (FE) have shown promising results. Previous research revealed a high variability of the required optimal dosage of FE for different types of sludge; however, studies analysing the causes for such variability are lacking. Therefore, this research examines the effect of sludge characteristics on the optimal FE dosage required for sludge filterability improvement (Dopt). We applied the cationic polymer Adifloc KD451 as FE, and determined Dopt with short-term cross-flow filtration tests. Sludge samples were obtained from five different pilot and full-scale anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBRs) treating municipal or industrial wastewater. Results showed that Dopt was significantly correlated with colloidal organic matter concentration, sludge filterability, capillary suction time, and concentration of soluble polysaccharides. Furthermore, we derived empirical models to predict Dopt based on the significantly correlated sludge characteristics as input variables.
