Knowledge of the nucleosynthetic isotope composition of the outermost protoplanetary disk is critical to understand the formation and early dynamical evolution of the Solar System. We report the discovery of outer disk material preserved in a pristine meteorite based on its chemical composition, organic-rich petrology, and 15N-rich, deuterium-rich, and 16O-poor isotope signatures. We infer that this outer disk material originated in the comet-forming region. The nucleosynthetic Fe, Mg, Si and Cr compositions of this material reveal that, contrary to current belief, the isotope signature of the comet-forming region is ubiquitous amongst outer Solar System bodies, possibly reflecting an important planetary building block in the outer Solar System. This nucleosynthetic component represents fresh material added to the outer disk by late accretion streamers connected to the ambient molecular cloud. During protoplanetary disk formation, dust grains located in the outer disk retain their pristine icy composition, while solids in the inner stellar-heated disk undergo volatile loss. This process may have left a fossil record in Solar System material showing different nucelosynthetic imprints that have been attributed to different degrees of thermal processing. However, it remains unclear how a large mass fraction of thermally-processed inner-disk pebbles is produced and how these grains are subsequently transported throughout the disk. In this work we numerically investigate the evolution in time of a two-component pebble disk, consisting of pristine pebbles and those that underwent ice sublimation. We find that stellar outbursts exceeding 1000 times the solar luminosity are efficient in thermally altering, through ice sublimation, a large mass fraction of pebbles (around 80%). After the establishment of this initial radial dust composition gradient throughout the disk, the subsequent mixing and inward drift of pristine outer-disk pebbles alter the inner disk bulk composition from processed to more unprocessed in time. Therefore, if processed pebbles without ice mantles have an isotopic composition similar to ureilite meteorites from the inner Solar System, inner-disk minor bodies forming from the early pebble flux (<1Myr) will be isotopically ureilite-like, while later-formed bodies will be increasingly admixed with the signature of the late incoming CI chondrite-like unprocessed pebbles. This appears to be largely consistent with the trend seen between the accretion age of different meteoric classes and their different stable isotope composition anomalies (in $\mu$54Cr, $\mu$48Ca, $\mu$30Si, $\mu$58Ni), but further work may be needed to explain the role of isotopically anomalous refractory inclusions and anomaly trends in other elements., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables, 5 appendices (4 additional pages, 6 additional figures). Protoplanetary disks are dust- and gas-rich structures surrounding protostars. Depending on the distance from the protostar, this dust is thermally processed to different degrees and accreted to form bodies of varying chemical compositions. The primordial accretion processes occurring in the early protoplanetary disk such as chondrule formation and metal segregation are not well understood. One way to constrain them is to study the morphology and composition of forsteritic grains from the matrix of carbonaceous chondrites. Here, we present high-resolution ptychographic X-ray nanotomography and multimodal chemical micro-tomography (X-ray diffraction and X-ray fluorescence) to reveal the early history of forsteritic grains extracted from the matrix of the Murchison CM2.5 chondrite. The 3D electron density maps revealed, at unprecedented resolution (64~nm), spherical inclusions containing Fe-Ni, very little silica-rich glass and void caps (i.e., volumes where the electron density is consistent with conditions close to vacuum) trapped in forsterite. The presence of the voids along with the overall composition, petrological textures, and shrinkage calculations is consistent with the grains experiencing one or more heating events with peak temperatures close to the melting point of forsterite ($\sim$2100~K) and subsequently cooled and contracted, in agreement with chondrule-forming conditions., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Understanding the origin of chondritic components and their accretion pathways is critical to unravel the magnitude of mass transport in the protoplanetary disk, the accretionary history of the terrestrial planet region and, by extension, its prebiotic inventory. Here, we trace the heritage of pristine components from the relatively unaltered CV chondrite Leoville through their mass-independent Cr and mass-dependent Zn isotope compositions. Investigating these chondritic fractions in such detail reveals an onion-shell structure of chondrules, which is characterized by 54Cr- and 66Zn-poor cores surrounded by increasingly 54Cr- and 66Zn-rich igneous rims and an outer coating of fine-grained dust. This is interpreted as a progressive addition of 54Cr- and 66Zn-rich, CI-like material to the accretion region of these carbonaceous chondrites. Our findings show that the observed Cr isotopic range in chondrules from more altered CV chondrites is the result of chemical equilibration between chondrules and matrix during secondary alteration. The 54Cr-poor nature of the cores of Leoville chondrules implies formation in the inner Solar System and subsequent massive outward chondrule transport past the Jupiter barrier. At the same time, CI-like dust is transferred inwards. We propose that the accreting Earth acquired CI-like dust through this mechanism within the lifetime of the disk. This radial mixing of chondrules and matrix shows the limited capacity of Jupiter to act as an efficient barrier and maintain the proposed non-carbonaceous and carbonaceous chondrite dichotomy over time. Events following the giant impact formation of the Moon are thought to have led to volatile depletion and concurrent mass-dependent fractionation of the isotopes of moderately volatile elements (MVE). The detailed processes and conditions surrounding this episode remain obscured and are not unified by a single model for all volatile elements and compounds. Using available data, including new Zn isotope data for eight lunar samples, we demonstrate that the isotopic fractionation of MVE in the Moon is best expressed by non-ideal Rayleigh distillation, approaching the fractionation factor {\alpha} using the reduced masses of the evaporated isotopologues. With these calculations a best fit for the data is obtained when the lunar MVE isotope data is normalized to ordinary or enstatite chondrites ({\Delta}Moon-OC,EC), rather than a bulk silicate Earth (BSE) composition. This analysis further indicates that the parent body from which the Moon formed cannot have partitioned S into its core based on S isotope compositions of lunar rocks. The best fit between {\Delta}Moon-OC,EC and modelled non-ideal Rayleigh fractionation is defined by a slope that corresponds to a saturation index of 90 +/- 4 %. In contrast, the older Highland suite is defined by a saturation index of 75 +/- 2 %, suggesting the vapor phase pressure was higher during mare basalt eruptions. This provides the first tangible evidence that the Moon was veiled by a thin atmosphere during mare basalt eruption events spanning at least from 3.8 to 3 billion years ago and implies that MVE isotope fractionation dominantly occurred after the Moon had accreted., Comment: Accepted, preprint

The potential complementarity between chondrules and matrix of chondrites, the Solar System's building blocks, is still a highly debated subject. Complementary superchrondritic compositions of chondrite matrices and subchondritic chondrules may point to formation of these components within the same reservoir or, alternatively, to mobilization of elements during secondary alteration on chondrite parent bodies. Zinc isotope fractionation through evaporation during chondrule formation may play an important role in identifying complementary relationships between chondrules and matrix and is additionally a mobile element during hydrothermal processes. In an effort to distinguish between primary Zn isotope fractionation during chondrule formation and secondary alteration, we here report the Zn isotope data of five chondrule cores, five corresponding igneous rims and two matrices of the relatively unaltered Leoville CV3.1 chondrite.
