RIVM rapport:Met citizen science doen burgers en wetenschappers samen onderzoek. Burgers doen bijvoorbeeld zelf metingen of verzamelen informatie. Dit kan een aanvulling zijn op gangbare onderzoeken om hinder door vliegtuiggeluid te bepalen. In deze onderzoeken wordt vooral gekeken naar de gevolgen van langdurige blootstelling. Citizen science geeft waardevol inzicht in hinder op de korte termijn (per dagdeel). Het RIVM heeft met citizen science-onderzoek de invloed van andere onderdelen van de blootstelling onderzocht. Dit geeft meer inzicht in de kortetermijnhinder. Het onderzoek bevestigt dat de mate van hinder door vliegtuigen niet alleen wordt bepaald door het geluidniveau. Ook andere factoren hebben daar invloed op, zoals het aantal vliegtuigpassages per uur of het aantal luide passages van vliegtuigen. Vernieuwend aan het onderzoek is dat gegevens met een app worden verzameld. Hiermee kunnen burgers makkelijk gegevens doorgeven, waardoor snel veel gegevens verzameld kunnen worden. De app maakt het mogelijk om op een efficiënte manier onderzoek met korte vragenlijsten te herhalen. Dit kan beleidsmakers veel waardevolle inzichten geven. Er blijken mogelijkheden te zijn om de kwaliteit van de door de deelnemers verzamelde data te verbeteren. In dit onderzoek is er maar bij een beperkte groep deelnemers onderzoek gedaan. Met meer deelnemers kan hinder nog beter onderzocht worden. Daarnaast moet de plaats waar de meetpunten van de deelnemers staan zorgvuldiger worden gekozen. Want het is belangrijk dat andere geluidbronnen, zoals auto's, de metingen van vliegtuiggeluid zo min mogelijk beïnvloeden. Voor het onderzoek gaven twee groepen van veertien mensen vier keer per dag informatie door over de mate waarin zij, terugkijkend op een dagdeel, gehinderd waren. Bovendien gaven zij onder meer het aantal vliegtuigen aan en hoe hoog het geluidniveau naar hun idee was. Deze resultaten zijn vergeleken met data van overkomende vluchten. The quality of the data collected by participants can be improved in several ways. This particular study involved research among only a limited group of participants. If more participants are found, nuisance can be studied even more effectively. In addition, the locations of the participants' measurement points need to be chosen more carefully. This is because interference from sound sources, such as cars, with the aircraft noise measurements must be kept to a minimum. In this study, two groups of 14 people each transmitted data 4 times a day about the level of nuisance they had experienced during the preceding part of the day. They also provided data about numbers of aircraft and their estimate of the level of noise involved. These results were compared with actual data of aircraft passages. RIVM rapport:De overheid stelt een maximum aan de hoeveelheid geluid die vliegtuigen mogen veroorzaken voor mensen die rond Nederlandse luchthavens wonen. Zo wordt de omvang van geluidhinder en nadelige gezondheidseffecten beperkt. Om te kunnen volgen of dit beleid succesvol is, moet helder zijn waar enin hoeverre mensen last hebben van geluid van vliegverkeer. Dat kan door bewoners rond alle Nederlandse luchthavens regelmatig te vragen naar de geluidhinder die zij ervaren. Zo'n terugkerende enquête is een aanvulling op de berekening van de geluidhinder met een blootstelling-responsrelatie, en kan gebruikt worden om vast te stellen of de berekening van de geluidhinder nog klopt. Ook kan de enquête in kaart brengen hoe de situatie tussen de luchthavens verschilt. Per luchthaven kan namelijk de hoeveelheid geluid verschillen, maar ook de leefomgeving en de plannen van de luchthavens om uit te breiden of te veranderen. Als het nodig is, kan de informatie uit de enquête worden gebruikt om beleid aan te passen aan de regionale situatie. Dit blijkt uit onderzoek van het RIVM. Volgens het RIVM is devierjaarlijkse GGD Gezondheidsmonitor geschikt als enquête om de ervaren geluidhinder van omwonenden vast te stellen en te vergelijken met de berekende hinder., The government sets the maximum permissible level of noise from aircraft for people living near airports in the Netherlands. This protects them against noise annoyance and adverse health effects. RIVM rapport:In de zomer van 2015 heeft het ministerie van Economische Zaken het milieu-effectrapport over schaliegaswinning (de planMER schaliegas) uitgebracht. Daarin wordt beschreven welke gevolgen de eventuele winning van schaliegas kan hebben voor het milieu. Om te kunnen beoordelen of deze gevolgen binnen de wettelijke milieunormen of andere richtlijnen blijven, heeft het RIVM een overzicht gemaakt van de bijbehorende normen en richtlijnen. Aan de basis van het overzicht liggen de milieu-effecten die in de planMER in beeld zijn gebracht. Voorbeelden zijn verontreinigingen van lucht, bodem en water, en gevolgen voor lichthinder, geluidhinder, externe veiligheid en klimaat. Uit de inventarisatie blijkt dat voor veel van deze milieugevolgen grenswaarden bestaan, maar niet voor alle. Er bestaan bijvoorbeeld wettelijke normen voor een aantal stoffen die bij de schaliegaswinning kunnen vrijkomen en de kwaliteit van lucht, grondwater en oppervlaktewater kunnen aantasten. Voor veel stoffen is dat echter niet het geval. Voor andere soorten milieu-effecten zijn al dan niet wettelijk vastgestelde kaders beschikbaar. Zo bestaan er wettelijke richtlijnen voor de door schaliegaswinning veroorzaakte geluidhinder en de kans op brand en explosies. Voor opgewekte trillingen en lichthinder bestaan alleen niet-wettelijk vastgestelde aanbevelingen. Er zijn ook milieu-effecten waarvoor geen normen of andere toetsingskaders bestaan, zoals de kans op aardbevingen en bodemdaling. Als zo'n kader ontbreekt, is het niet eenvoudig om deze effecten te beoordelen. Aan het overzicht worden geen adviezen of conclusies verbonden., In the summer of 2015, the Ministry of Economic Affairs has reported which effects the possible extraction of shale gas may have on the environment (the Environmental Impact Assessment on shale gas exploration, in brief 'the planMER shale gas'). In order to assess whether these effects are within the legal environmental standards or other guidelines, RIVM has made an overview of the associated standards and guidelines. At the base of the outline are the environmental effects that have been drawn up for the planMER. Examples are pollution of air, soil and water, and light pollution, noise pollution, external safety and climate change. The inventory shows that for many of the environmental effects standards exist, but not for all. For example, legal standards exist for a number of substances used in the shale gas extraction that can influence the quality of air, groundwater and surface water. However, that is not the case for most substances. For other types of environmental effects legally established frameworks may or may not be available. There are legal guidelines for the noise caused by shale gas extraction and the risk of fire and explosions. For induced vibration and light pollution there are only non-legally established recommendations. For the likelihood of earthquakes and land subsidence, there are no standards or other guidelines. If such a framework is lacking, it is difficult to assess these effects. No opinions or conclusions are connected to this inventory.

RIVM rapport:Het RIVM heeft onderzocht wat voor invloed het geluid van militair vliegverkeer (onder andere AWACS) heeft op de gezondheid van inwoners in de Nederlandse regio rond de vliegbasis. Daaruit blijkt dat tussen 2002 en 2012 de omvang van de hinder met ongeveer de helft en de omvang van de gezondheidseffecten met bijna twee derde zijn afgenomen. Deze daling gaat gelijk op met het afgenomen aantal vliegbewegingen, en daarmee naar alle waarschijnlijkheid, met de blootstelling aan geluid van militair vliegverkeer. Maar nog steeds heeft een deel van de bewoners last van ernstige geluidhinder. Daarnaast heeft een aantal inwoners last van een hoge bloeddruk of ondervindt hart- en vaataandoeningen (hartinfarct, beroerte) door het geluid van militaire vliegtuigen. Met dit onderzoek is niet aan te tonen of de verhoogde kans op sterfte door een beroerte een gevolg is van het militair vliegtuiggeluid. Het kan ook niet worden uitgesloten, aangezien er een aanwijzing is voor een verhoogde kans op sterfte door een beroerte in het gebied waar de blootstelling aan militair vliegtuiggeluid het hoogst is. Er zijn meerdere factoren die een beroerte kunnen veroorzaken, zoals iemands leefstijl. Gegevens over deze factoren bij de bevolking zijn niet bekend. Er zijn geen signalen gevonden voor een verhoogd risico op sterfte door alle hart- en vaataandoeningen samen. In 2012 hadden ongeveer 29.000 van de circa 500.000 volwassen inwoners in Zuid-Limburg last van ernstige geluidhinder. In de regio rond de vliegbasis Geilenkirchen zijn dit ongeveer 13.000 van de circa 220.000 volwassen inwoners. Vooral inwoners van gemeenten dichtbij de vliegbasis, zoals Onderbanken, Brunssum en Schinnen ondervinden veel geluidhinder. Als mensen zelf aangeven hoe ze hun gezondheid ervaren (zelfgerapporteerde gezondheid), is daarin geen relatie terug te zien met geluid van vliegverkeer. Van de 638 kinderen met een leesachterstand in Zuid-Limburg, hebben naar schatting twee kinderen een leesachterstand als gevolg va, RIVM has examined the influence of military aircraft sound (AWACS) on the wellbeing and health of residents in the Dutch region round the airbase Geilenkirchen. The results indicate that the magnitude of most of the effects studied has decreased with up to nearly two-thirds between 2002 and 2012. The decrease is in line with the decrease in number of flight movements and therefore most likely with exposure to military aircraft sound. Still a considerable proportion of residents suffer from severe annoyance due to military aircraft noise. In addition, some people suffer from high blood pressure or experiencing cardiovascular events (myocardial infarction, stroke) due to exposure to military aircraft noise. No evidence was found for an increased risk of death from all cardiovascular diseases together. An increased risk for death due to stroke was observed in the area with the highest exposure to military aircraft noise. However, several factors are known to contribute to stroke, such as lifestyle factors. Data on lifestyle factors were not available. Therefore, these results are inconclusive with respect to whether or not the increased risk of death due to stroke is a result of exposure to aircraft noise. In 2012, about 29,000 of the approximately 500,000 adult residents in South Limburg suffer from severe noise annoyance. In the region around the airbase Geilenkirchen about 13,000 of the approximately 220,000 adult residents are severely annoyed. Especially residents of municipalities near the airbase like Onderbanken, Brunssum and Schinnen experience much noise annoyance. Selfreported health shows no relation with military aircraft sound. It is estimated that two children, out of 638 in South Limburg, have reading impairment due to aircraft noise. Around the airbase Geilenkirchen this is one additional child with reading ability retardation, out of 272 children with a reading impairment. Introduction: Growing evidence suggests that close contact with nature brings benefits to human health and well-being, but the proposed mechanisms are still not well understood and the associations with health remain uncertain. The Positive Health Effects of the Natural Outdoor environment in Typical Populations in different regions in Europe (PHENOTYPE) project investigates the interconnections between natural outdoor environments and better human health and well-being. Aims and methods: The PHENOTYPE project explores the proposed underlying mechanisms at work (stress reduction/restorative function, physical activity, social interaction, exposure to environmental hazards) and examines the associations with health outcomes for different population groups. It implements conventional and new innovative high-tech methods to characterise the natural environment in terms of quality and quantity. Preventive as well as therapeutic effects of contact with the natural environment are being covered. PHENOTYPE further addresses implications for land-use planning and green space management. The main innovative part of the study is the evaluation of possible short-term and long-term associations of green space and health and the possible underlying mechanisms in four different countries (each with quite a different type of green space and a different use), using the same methodology, in one research programme. This type of holistic approach has not been undertaken before. Furthermore there are technological innovations such as the use of remote sensing and smartphones in the assessment of green space. Conclusions: The project will produce a more robust evidence base on links between exposure to natural outdoor environment and human health and well-being, in addition to a better integration of human health needs into land-use planning and green space management in rural as well as urban areas.

Previous studies have found that chronic exposure to aircraft noise has a negative effect on children's performance on tests of episodic memory. The present study extended the design of earlier studies in three ways: firstly, by examining the effects of two noise sources, aircraft and road traffic, secondly, by examining exposure-effect relationships, and thirdly, by carrying out parallel field studies in three European countries, allowing cross-country comparisons to be made. A total of 2844 children aged between 8 years 10 months and 12 years 10 months (mean age 10 years 6 months) completed classroom-based tests of cued recall, recognition memory and prospective memory. Questionnaires were also completed by the children and their parents in order to provide information about socioeconomic context. Multilevel modeling analysis revealed aircraft noise to be associated with an impairment of recognition memory in a linear exposure-effect relationship. The analysis also found road traffic noise to be associated with improved performance on cued recall in a linear exposure-effect relationship. No significant association was found between exposure to aircraft noise and cued recall or prospective memory. Likewise, no significant association was found between road traffic noise and recognition or prospective memory. Taken together, these findings indicate that exposure to aircraft noise and road traffic noise can impact on certain aspects of children's episodic memory.

The RANCH study found a linear exposure effect association between chronic aircraft noise exposure at primary school and the impairment of children’s reading comprehension, in the Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom. This paper presents multilevel modelling analyses, exploring psychological mechanisms, which may moderate the effect of aircraft noise on children’s cognition. Psychological restoration – the process whereby places which afford tranquillity and relaxation are utilized to reduce stress and promote well being – has been shown to reduce the adverse effect of noise on children’s annoyance responses. This paper examines whether having places for psychological restoration at home, moderates the adverse effects of chronic aircraft noise exposure at school on children’s cognition. In addition, the effectiveness of coping strategies in relation to noise exposure at school are examined – are specific coping strategies associated with less impairment of cognition?
