An increasing number of scholars suggest the need to enhance the incorporation of diversity and social justice across all areas of family science. Part of this work has seen family science more strongly and explicitly incorporate intersectional theorizing to problematize individual biases and power positions, generally, and of researchers and participants, more specifically. More work is needed to connect theory, method, and methodology to advance the call of scholars. Here, we attend to this call by providing methodological considerations for conducting intersectional phenomenological research in family science. We begin with an overview of phenomenology, including its philosophical and methodological foundations and variations. We then introduce the history of intersectionality, followed by critical methodological considerations for intersectional phenomenological research in family science. This integration of intersectionality and phenomenological research centers the lived experiences of individuals and families with historically marginalized identities while attending to power dynamics often part of scholarship. Hooking up is a popular trend on college campuses (Victor, 2012). Traditionally, hooking up has been viewed as a sexual risk behavior and research has focused on implications such as the spread of sexually transmitted infections (STI) or unintended pregnancy (Downing-Matibag & Geisinger, 2009). However, hookup behavior may also influence attitudes toward future romantic relationships and young adult perceptions of their ability to be in romantic relationships (Riggio, Weiser, Valenzuela, Lui, Montes & Heuer, 2009; Sassler, 2010). In addition, gender plays a critical role in heterosexual hookup behavior, since there is often a power differential present (Cook-Lindsay, 2013; Lovejoy, 2015), and must be closely examined. Thus, this literature review seeks to examine heterosexual hookup behavior and future romantic relationships. We suggest that hookups are linked to future romantic relationships through romantic relationship self-efficacy, or one's perception of their ability to be in a romantic relationship (Riggio et al., 2013). In addition, upon our review, there are clear gender differences in perceptions of heterosexual hookups which may contribute to perceptions of future romantic relationships. This is discussed in depth and suggestions for future research are provided.

In exploring why American mothers spend more time on care work compared to prior decades while increasingly engaging in paid work, Hays (1997) attributed women's actions to intensive motherhood (IM) ideology. Hays also asserted that women purposedly adhere to IM to resist an increasingly neoliberal market-based society by dedicating time and effort to nurturing children and family life. Here, we undertake a content analysis to take stock of IM literature's evolution in recent decades. Specifically, we examine scholars' treatment of how women adhere to IM, and why and whether women do so in resistance to neoliberalism. We found that while scholars consistently cite and echo Hays (1997) on how women adhere to IM, most depart from Hays (1997) by positing women adhere to live up to an ideal of being a perfect mother due to the pervasive nature of IM. We also found many scholars focus on the possibility of resisting IM ideology itself rather than Hays's (1997) perspective that women employ the ideology to resist neoliberalism. These findings raise questions about how women's agency manifests in the IM context, and concerns about embedded assumptions that limit our understanding of women's realities. This autoethnography represents the first author's journey as a mother and doctoral student researching mothers' experiences in contending with the demands of work and family. Reading across different pockets of empirical motherhood literature (work-family conflict, contemporary motherhood, maternal gatekeeping, and intensive motherhood) I became troubled by how women's realities were reflected. Pushing back against traditional methods that endorse separating my researcher identity from my maternal self, I draw on autoethnographic method to dialogue with this literature. This approach empowers me to speak out as a novice scholar uncomfortable with aspects of literature, while also navigating training in the use of traditional methods that often provide a directive to separate academic and personal identities. Importantly, doing so enables me to identify powerful insights about limitations in the literature, and how specific pockets of research can adversely affect the broader motherhood literature. This Internet-based study used data from a convenience sample of 176 gay men in current partnerships to examine differences in outness, cohesion, and relationship quality between three types of gay male couples: first cohabiting partnerships, repartnerships, and gay stepfamilies. Also, we tested whether relationship quality mediated the link between outness and cohesion and the moderating role of type of relationship. Results showed that those in first cohabiting partnerships had the lowest levels of relationship quality and cohesion, whereas those in gay stepfamilies reported having the highest levels of relationship quality and those in repartnerships reported the highest levels of cohesion. For all couples, the link between outness and cohesion was partially mediated by relationship quality, and this was moderated for those in repartnerships. (Contains 5 tables.)

Those who teach research methods courses may struggle to engage students who are anxious or apprehensive about taking the course. Thus, it becomes the obligation of the instructor to develop innovative approaches so that students overcome their apprehension, learn the material, and, it is hoped, develop a passion for research. The authors present one such innovative approach (Project M) that involves combining aspects from multiple teaching techniques (traditional, active, cooperative, and collaborative learning) with a reality television-like experience. They also present anonymous qualitative student evaluation data collected at three points during the semester using a descriptive feedback method. The feedback suggests the effective nature of Project M as a learning strategy for research methods students. (Contains 1 table.)

This study addresses remarried women's financial security related to the transition from divorce to remarriage by examining the financial changes and financial management strategies reported by a sample of 298 women. Findings suggest that women in remarriage experience a number of economic changes that are associated with both positive and negative outcomes. Specifically, the number of financial changes was related to use of a financial management strategy, but not to indicators of financial security; however, financial management strategy was related to financial security. Also, longer duration of a first or a remarriage was associated with higher financial security, whereas the link between financial management strategy and financial security was moderated by the length of time of the first marriage and remarriage. Data from 33 lesbian and 54 gay male cohabiting couples were used to examine the relation between parental identification and mate selection. Theories of mate selection and parental identification are reviewed. Effects of gender and sexual orientation as they relate to parental identification and mate selection in gay male and lesbian couples also are reviewed. The results demonstrate significant associations between the similarity of perceived parental personality and relationship styling traits with those of the partner. Socio-economic status, age, and culture also were significantly associated between parents and partners. Taken together, the results demonstrate little support for any specific theory and allude to the need for further research in this area. Limitations and implications are discussed. KEYWORDS. Using a latent class analysis (LCA) with data from a subsample of children in stepfamilies (N = 6,637) from the 2009 High School Longitudinal Study (HSLS), this study examined how stepfamily involvement in their (step)child's education in and outside of school influenced their (step)child's college preparation. Stepfamily involvement in their (step)child's education in school (e.g., help with homework) and outside of school (e.g., educational experiences such as going to a museum) may help overcome challenges associated with academic and college preparation for children in stepfamilies. Results broadly indicate students with higher stepfamily involvement in education in and out of school had (step)parents who believed that college was attainable, students engaged in more activities that would prepare them for their future, and students took more AP/IB level courses and tests. Queer stepfamilies occupy multiple marginalized statuses (e.g., queer, step). Accordingly, it is logical to expect these stepfamilies might be particularly vulnerable to adjustment difficulties, and scant literature demonstrates some of these. Other literature suggests some queer stepfamilies might be particularly flexible, adept, and less rooted in heteronormative ideals (e.g., expecting queer repartnerships to function like first partnerships) when adjusting to stepfamily life. However, the processes these families use to navigate stepfamily formation and adjustment are relatively unexplored. The current phenomenological study identified the strategies queer stepfamilies used to navigate early stepfamily life and how combinations of strategies represented larger pathways of family formation. Data came from family, couple, and individual focal child interviews about the lived experiences of six queer stepfamilies. Participants reported strategies consistent with Oswald's [(2002). Variations in how these strategies were used led to the identification of three pathways. In contrast to a traditional monolithic view of queer families, our findings identify important within-group variations. A third of Hispanic youth live below the poverty line, making them vulnerable for exposure to gangs, substances, and violence, all of which have been associated with substance use. The aim of the present study was to test the link between these variables, using a multiple mediation model. Results suggest that the relationship between gang exposure and adolescent substance use was mediated by both access to substances and exposure to violence. Findings provide insight into how gang exposure impacts outcomes for low-income youth. Implications for prevention and policy are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although the stepfamily literature is well developed, most examines heterosexual stepfamilies and fails to note the presence of those headed by same-gender couples. This especially is true of male couples assumed unlikely to have children. Our case study uses a queer lens to examine a stepfamily headed by gay men. Family, couple, and focal child interviews were coded using thematic analysis. Findings indicate family members rejected normative family labels (e.g., stepfamily) and wanted to be thought of only as a family. These stepfamily members also performed family in ways that defied heteronormativity; however, they described struggling to do so within legal contexts that favored biological mothers, especially those in heterosexual families.
