2. Macroscopic coherence between quantum condensates formed at different times

Abstract

We demonstrate macroscopic coherence between quantum condensates generated at different times, separated by more than the particle dephasing time. This is possible due to the dressed light-matter nature of exciton-polaritons, which can be injected resonantly by optical excitation at well-defined momenta. We show that the build-up of coherence between condensates depends on the interaction between the particles, particle density, as well as temperature despite the non-equilibrium nature of the condensate, whereas the mass of the particles plays no role in the condensation of resonantly injected polaritons. This experiment also makes it possible for us to measure directly the large nonlinear phase shift resulting from the polariton-polariton interaction energy. Our results provide direct evidence for coherence between different condensates and demonstrate a new approach for probing their ultrafast dynamics, opening new directions in the study of matter coherence as well as in practical applications such as quantum information and ultrafast logic.

3. Dynamic Stark Effect in Strongly Coupled Microcavity Exciton-Polaritons

Abstract

We present experimental observations of a non-resonant dynamic Stark shift in strongly coupled microcavity quantum well exciton-polaritons - a system which provides a rich variety of solid-state collective phenomena. The Stark effect is demonstrated in a GaAs/AlGaAs system at 10K by femtosecond pump-probe measurements, with the blue shift approaching the meV scale for a pump fluence of 2 mJcm^-2 and 50 meV red detuning, in good agreement with theory. The energy level structure of the strongly coupled polariton Rabi-doublet remains unaffected by the blue shift. The demonstrated effect should allow generation of ultrafast density-independent potentials and imprinting well-defined phase profiles on polariton condensates, providing a powerful tool for manipulation of these condensates, similar to dipole potentials in cold atom systems.

Abstract

We report a single-beam, differential z-scan technique with improved sensitivity for the determination of nonlinear absorption and refraction of materials. A sample is scanned in the direction of beam propagation as usual, but, in addition, its longitudinal position is dithered, producing a detector signal proportional to the spatial derivative of only the nonlinear transmission and therefore giving a background-free signal; the nonlinear transmission for any spatial position of the sample can be recovered by simple integration. For both open and closed aperture scans in GaP, we find an improvement in the signal-to-noise ratio of >5x compared with a balanced z-scan setup, but this can be improved with apparatus optimization. Abstract

It is well known that robust and reliable photonic crystal structures can be manufactured with very high precision by electrochemical etching of silicon wafers, which results in two- and three-dimensional photonic crystals made of macroporous silicon. However, tuning of the photonic properties is necessary in order to apply these promising structures in integrated optical devices. For this purpose, different effects have been studied, such as the infiltration with addressable dielectric liquids (liquid crystals), the utilization of Kerr-like nonlinearities of the silicon, or free-charge carrier injection by means of linear (one-photon) and nonlinear (two-photon) absorptions. The present article provides a review, critical discussion, and perspectives about state-of-the-art tuning capabilities.

Abstract

At high electric fields negative differential resistance and oscillatory behavior of the current is observed in 2-dimensional electron gases in modulation doped heterostructures. We develop a model in which the understanding of these phenomena is provided by the ohmic contacts to the 2-dimensional electron gas. The key phenomenon is that at a high electric field, well below the threshold field for real space transfer across the interface between the GaAs and the Al xGa1-xAs, injection of electrons from the contacts into the AlxGa 1-xAs layer opens a conductive channel in the AlxGa1-xAs parallel to the 2-dimensional electron gas in the GaAs layer. We show that avalanche ionization in the AlxGa1-xAs layer leads to current filamentation. We studied this behavior for various experimental conditions by means of a novel technique which we developed for this purpose: the technique of time resolved optical beam induced current.
