1. The eclipse of the V773 Tau B circumbinary disk

Abstract

A deep (~70%) and extended (~150 days) eclipse was seen towards the young multiple stellar system V773 Tau in 2010. We interpret it as due to the passage of a circumbinary disk around the B components moving in front of the A components. Our aim is to characterise the orientation and structure of the disk, to refine the orbits of the subcomponents, and to predict when the next eclipse will occur. We combine the photometry from several ground based surveys, construct a model for the light curve of the eclipse, and use high angular resolution imaging to refine the orbits of the three components of the system, A, B and C. Frequency analysis of the light curves, including from the TESS satellite, enables characterisation of the rotational periods of the Aa and Ab stars. A toy model of the circumbinary disk shows that it extends out to approximately 5 au around the B binary and has an inclination of 73 degrees with respect to the orbital plane of AB, where the lower bound of the radius of the disk is constrained by the geometry of the AB orbit and the upper bound is set by the stability of the disk. We identify several frequencies in the photometric data that we attribute to rotational modulation of the Aa and Ab stellar companions. We produce the first determination of the orbit of the more distant C component around the AB system and limit its inclination to 93 degrees. The high inclination and large diameter of the disk, together with the match from theory suggest that B is an almost equal mass, moderately eccentric binary. We identify the rotational periods of the Aa and Ab stars, identify a third frequency in the light curve that we attribute to the orbital period of the stars in the B binary. We predict that the next eclipse will be around 2037, during which both detailed photometric and spectroscopic monitoring will characterise the disk in greater detail., Comment: 13 pages, 15 figures, 5 tables, A&A in press. Abstract

Observations of the star EPIC 220208795 (2MASS J01105556+0018507) reveal a single, deep and asymmetric eclipse, which we hypothesize is due to an eclipsing companion surrounded by a tilted and inclined opaque disk, similar to those seen around V928 Tau and EPIC 204376071. We aim to derive physical parameters of the disk and orbital parameters for the companion around the primary star. The modeling is carried out using a modified version of the python package pyPplusS, and optimization is done using emcee. The period analysis makes use of photometry from ground-based surveys, where we perform a period folding search for other possible eclipses by the disk. Parameters obtained by the best model fits are used to obtain the parameter space of the orbital parameters, while the most likely period obtained is used to constrain these parameters. The best model has an opaque disk with a radius of $1.14\pm0.03$ $R_{\odot}$, an impact parameter of $0.61\pm0.02$ $R_{\odot}$, an inclination of $77.01^{\circ}\pm0.03^{\circ}$, a tilt of $36.81^{\circ}\pm0.05^{\circ}$ and a transverse velocity of $77.45\pm0.05$ km s$^{-1}$. The two most likely periods are $\sim 290$ days and $\sim 236$ days, corresponding to an eccentricity of $\sim 0.7$, allowing us to make predictions for the epochs of the next eclipses. All models with tilted and inclined disks result in a minimum derived eccentricity of 0.3, which in combination with the two other known small transiting disk candidates V928 Tau and EPIC 204376071, suggest that there may be a common origin for their eccentric orbits., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, 10 tables, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics. Abstract

In 2007, the young star 1SWASP J140747.93-394542.6 (V1400 Cen) underwent a complex series of deep eclipses over 56 days. This was attributed to the transit of a ring system filling a large fraction of the Hill sphere of an unseen substellar companion. Subsequent photometric monitoring has not found any other deep transits from this candidate ring system, but if there are more substellar companions and they are coplanar with the potential ring system, there is a chance that they will transit the star as well. This young star is active and the light curves show a 5% modulation in amplitude with a dominant rotation period of 3.2 days due to star spots rotating in and out of view. We model and remove the rotational modulation of the J1407 light curve and search for additional transit signatures of substellar companions orbiting around J1407. We combine the photometry of J1407 from several observatories, spanning a 19 year baseline. We remove the rotational modulation by modeling the variability as a periodic signal, whose periodicity changes slowly with time over several years due to the activity cycle of the star. A Transit Least Squares (TLS) analysis searches for any periodic transiting signals within the cleaned light curve. We identify an activity cycle of J1407 with a period of 5.4 years. A Transit Least Squares search does not find any plausible periodic eclipses in the light curve, from 1.2% amplitude at 5 days up to 1.9% at 20 days. This sensitivity is confirmed by injecting artificial transits into the light curve and determining the recovery fraction as a function of transit depth and orbital period. J1407 is confirmed as a young active star with an activity cycle consistent with a rapidly rotating solar mass star. Abstract

In 2022, a sevenfold increase in the number of notifiable invasive Streptococcus pyogenes (iGAS) infections among children aged 0-5 years was observed in the Netherlands compared with pre-COVID-19 pandemic years. Of 42 cases in this age group, seven had preceding or coinciding varicella zoster infections, nine were fatal. This increase is not attributable to a specific emm type. Vigilance for clinical deterioration as iGAS sign is warranted in young children, especially those with varicella zoster infection.

Abstract

Background Carbapenemases produced by Enterobacterales are often encoded by genes on transferable plasmids and represent a major healthcare problem, especially if the plasmids contain additional antibiotic resistance genes. As part of Dutch national surveillance, 50 medical microbiological laboratories submit their Enterobacterales isolates suspected of carbapenemase production to the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment for characterization. All isolates for which carbapenemase production is confirmed are subjected to next-generation sequencing. Objectives To study the molecular characteristics of a genetic cluster of Enterobacter cloacae complex isolates collected in Dutch national surveillance in the period 2015–20 in the Netherlands. Methods Short- and long-read genome sequencing was used in combination with MLST and pan-genome MLST (pgMLST) analyses. Automated antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST), the Etest for meropenem and the broth microdilution test for colistin were performed. The carbapenem inactivation method was used to assess carbapenemase production. Abstract

Psychotic patients with a lifetime history of cannabis use generally show better cognitive functioning than other psychotic patients. Some authors suggest that cannabis-using patients may have been less cognitively impaired and less socially withdrawn in their premorbid life. Using a dataset comprising 948 patients with first-episode psychosis (FEP) and 1313 population controls across 6 countries, we examined the extent to which IQ and both early academic (Academic Factor [AF]) and social adjustment (Social Factor [SF]) are related to the lifetime frequency of cannabis use in both patients and controls. We expected a higher IQ and a better premorbid social adjustment in psychotic patients who had ever used cannabis compared to patients without any history of use. We did not expect such differences in controls. In both patients and controls, IQ was 3 points higher among occasional-users than in never-users (mean difference [Mdiff] = 2.9, 95% CI = [1.2, 4.7]). Both cases and control daily-users had lower AF compared to occasional (Mdiff = −0.3, 95% CI = [−0.5; −0.2]) and never-users (Mdiff = −0.4, 95% CI = [−0.6; −0.2]). Finally, patient occasional (Mdiff = 0.3, 95% CI = [0.1; 0.5]) and daily-users (Mdiff = 0.4, 95% CI = [0.2; 0.6]) had better SF than their never-using counterparts. This difference was not present in controls (Fgroup*frequency(2, 2205) = 4.995, P = .007). Our findings suggest that the better premorbid social functioning of FEP with a history of cannabis use may have contributed to their likelihood to begin using cannabis, exposing them to its reported risk-increasing effects for Psychotic Disorders.

Abstract

Even though the involvement of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine; 5-HT) and its receptors in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is widely accepted, data on the expression and the role of 5-HT7 receptors in AD is relatively limited. Therefore, the objective of the present work was to study the expression of serotonergic 5-HT7 receptors in postmortem samples of AD brains and correlate it with neurotransmitter levels, cognition and behavior. The study population consisted of clinically well-characterized and neuropathologically confirmed AD patients (n = 42) and age-matched control subjects (n = 18). Reverse-transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) and high-performance liquid chromatography were performed on Brodmann area (BA) 7, BA10, BA22, BA24, hippocampus, amygdala, thalamus and cerebellum to measure mRNA levels of 5-HT7 receptors (HTR7), as well as the concentrations of various monoamine neurotransmitters and their metabolites. Decreased levels of HTR7 mRNA were observed in BA10. A significant association was observed between HTR7 levels in BA10 and BEHAVE-AD cluster B (hallucinations) (rs(28) = 0.444, P < 0.05). In addition, a negative correlation was observed between HTR7 levels in BA10 and both MHPG concentrations in this brain region (rs(45) = -0.311; P < 0.05), and DOPAC levels in the amygdala (rs(42) = -0.311; P < 0.05). Quite sur- prisingly, no association was found between HTR7 levels and cognitive status. Altogether, this study supports the notion of the involvement of 5-HT7 receptors in psychotic symptoms in AD, suggesting the interest of testing antagonist acting at this receptor to specifically treat psychotic symptoms in this illness.

Abstract

Forming heterostructures of 2D metals and semiconductors using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) has significant potential to effectively reduce contact resistance in electronic devices. However, semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) layers in metal–semiconductor heterostructures are currently restricted to monolayers despite the superior mobility and density of states in bilayer TMDs. Herein, NbSe2/bilayer Nb‐doped WSe2 metal/semiconductor heterostructure from exfoliated WSe2 flakes are synthesized first. The exfoliated WSe2 bulk crystals on an Nb‐coated substrate are heated to 950 °C under a flow of selenium vapor, and then the NbSe2/bilayer Nb‐doped WSe2 heterostructures are formed. Statistics on the number of Nb‐doped WSe2 layers grown on a 1 cm × 1 cm CVD substrate shows that 65% of the Nb‐doped WSe2 layers are grown as bilayers. X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, optical microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy clearly clarify the number of Nb‐doped WSe2 layers and heterostructure of NbSe2/bilayer Nb‐doped WSe2. Electrical measurements using Cr contacts show that bilayer Nb‐doped WSe2 displays 7‐ and 10‐times higher mobility and on/off ratio than monolayer Nb‐doped WSe2. The mobility and on/off ratio are further doubled in NbSe2/bilayer Nb‐doped WSe2 contact compared to Cr/bilayer Nb‐doped WSe2 contact, attributed to a clean interface in vertical stack heterostructure, enhancing electrical performance.

Abstract

Abstract The synthesis of semiconductor–metal (S–M) heterostructures comprising semiconducting (S)‐transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) and metallic (M)‐TMDs via chemical vapor deposition (CVD) has emerged as a highly promising avenue for achieving low contact resistance in TMD‐based devices. However, CVD‐grown S–M heterostructures are mainly focused on non‐degenerate semiconductors, despite degenerate semiconductors also being essential for semiconductor technology, such as negative differential resistance (NDR) device. In this study, a degenerate‐S–M heterostructure, Nb‐doped‐WS2–NbS2, is synthesized via CVD with a liquid‐metal precursor. Optimizing the growth parameters, such as growth temperature, precursor ratio, and H2 content in the mixture gas, affords the desirable degenerate‐Nb‐doped‐WS2–NbS2 heterostructure. Raman and photoluminescence spectroscopies, transmission electron microscopy, and energy‐dispersive spectroscopy clearly clarify the doping signal and layer structure of the heterostructure. A growth mechanism has been proposed using in‐plane and vertical models based on structural analysis. Electrical transport measurements reveal degenerate p‐type behavior in the Nb‐doped‐WS2. In the Nb‐doped‐WS2–NbS2 degenerate‐S–M heterostructure, the device flows about twice as much on‐state current as that by an Nb‐doped‐WS2/Cr contact.

Abstract

BackgroundLower intelligence quotient (IQ) has frequently been reported in patients with schizophrenia. However, it is unclear whether IQ declines (further) after illness onset and what the familial contribution is to this change. Therefore, we investigate IQ changes during the course of illness in patients with non-affective psychosis, their siblings and controls.MethodsData are part of the longitudinal Genetic Risk and Outcome of Psychosis (GROUP) study in the Netherlands and Belgium. Participants underwent three measurements, each approximately 3 years apart. A total of 1022 patients with non-affective psychosis [illness duration: 4.34 (s.d.= 4.50) years], 977 of their siblings, and 565 controls had at least one measure of IQ (estimated from four subtests of the WAIS-III).ResultsAt baseline, IQ was significantly lower in patients (IQ = 97.8) and siblings (IQ = 108.2;p< 0.0001) than in controls (IQ = 113.0;p< 0.0001), and in patients as compared with siblings (p< 0.0001). Over time, IQ increased in all groups. In siblings, improvement in IQ was significantly more pronounced (+0.7 points/year) than in patients (+0.5 points/year;p< 0.0001) and controls (+0.3 points/year;p< 0.0001). IQ increase was not significantly correlated with improvement in (sub)clinical outcome in any of the groups.ConclusionsDuring the first 10 years of the illness, IQ increases to a similar (and subtle) extent in a relatively high-functioning group of schizophrenia patients and controls, despite the lower IQ in patients at baseline. In addition, the siblings’ IQ was intermediate at baseline, but over time the increase in IQ was more pronounced.

Abstract

Abstract Multispectral photodetectors are crucial for detecting light across a wide wavelength range, serving applications requiring precise wavelength specificity and spectral imaging capabilities. However, the development of these photodetectors is hindered by several challenges, including material compatibility issues, low responsivity, the complexity of signal processing, and precise bandgap engineering. A strategy is proposed using a MoS2‐graphene photodetector to address these issues. Gate‐tunable spectral responses are achieved in a graphene photodetector by utilizing carrier transfer from MoS2 and interfacial gating effects from a SiO2/p‐doped Si substrate. Precise gate bias manipulation enables selective photocurrent capture in the range of 500–680 nm, identical to the absorption of MoS2. Furthermore, by applying a highly negative gate bias, photocurrent signals below the MoS2 bandgap, i.e., in the 680–800 nm region, are detected, significantly provoking broadband photodetection. The results highlight the versatility of gate‐tunable multispectral response, leading to an exceptional responsivity of up to 1.4 × 105 mA W−1. Moreover, through the precise modulation of gate bias and incident wavelength, it seamlessly switches between negative and positive photocurrents. This study provides important insight into carrier photogeneration in sensitized graphene‐based multifunctional optoelectronic devices, establishing a versatile platform for detecting a broad range of photocurrents with a single detector.

Abstract

Abstract Multi-terminal memristor and memtransistor (MT-MEMs) has successfully performed complex functions of heterosynaptic plasticity in synapse. However, theses MT-MEMs lack the ability to emulate membrane potential of neuron in multiple neuronal connections. Here, we demonstrate multi-neuron connection using a multi-terminal floating-gate memristor (MT-FGMEM). The variable Fermi level (E F) in graphene allows charging and discharging of MT-FGMEM using horizontally distant multiple electrodes. Our MT-FGMEM demonstrates high on/off ratio over 105 at 1000 s retention about ~10,000 times higher than other MT-MEMs. The linear behavior between current (I D) and floating gate potential (V FG) in triode region of MT-FGMEM allows for accurate spike integration at the neuron membrane. The MT-FGMEM fully mimics the temporal and spatial summation of multi-neuron connections based on leaky-integrate-and-fire (LIF) functionality. Our artificial neuron (150 pJ) significantly reduces the energy consumption by 100,000 times compared to conventional neurons based on silicon integrated circuits (11.7 μJ). By integrating neurons and synapses using MT-FGMEMs, a spiking neurosynaptic training and classification of directional lines functioned in visual area one (V1) is successfully emulated based on neuron’s LIF and synapse’s spike-timing-dependent plasticity (STDP) functions. Simulation of unsupervised learning based on our artificial neuron and synapse achieves a learning accuracy of 83.08% on the unlabeled MNIST handwritten dataset.

Abstract

The commonly observed over prediction of aeolian saltation transport on sandy beaches is, at least in part, caused by saltation intermittency. To study small-scale saltation processes, high frequency saltation sensors are required on a high spatial resolution. Therefore, we developed a low-cost Saltation Detection System (SalDecS) with the aim to measure saltation intensity at a frequency of 10 Hz and with a spatial resolution of 0.10 m in wind-normal direction. Linearity and equal sensitivity of the saltation sensors were investigated during wind tunnel and field experiments. Wind tunnel experiments with a set of 7 SalDec sensors revealed that the variability of sensor sensitivity is at maximum 9% during relatively low saltation intensities. During more intense saltation the variability of sensor sensitivity decreases. A sigmoidal fit describes the relation between mass flux and sensor output measured during 5 different wind conditions. This indicates an increasing importance of sensor saturation with increasing mass flux. We developed a theoretical model to simulate and describe the effect of grain size, grain velocity and saltation intensity on sensor saturation. Time-averaged field measurements revealed sensitivity equality for 85 out of a set of 89 horizontally deployed SalDec sensors. On these larger timescales (hours) saltation variability imposed by morphological features, such as sand strips, can be recognized. We conclude that the SalDecS can be used to measure small-scale spatiotemporal variabilities of saltation intensity to investigate saltation characteristics related to wind turbulence.

Different from the zero‐gap of graphene, these preeminent properties made GDY emerge as a rising star for solving the bottleneck of graphene‐based inefficient heterojunction. Herein, a highly effective graphdiyne/molybdenum (GDY/MoS2) type‐II heterojunction in a charge separation is reported toward a high‐performance photodetector. Characterized by robust electron repulsion of alkyne‐rich skeleton, the GDY based junction facilitates the effective electron–hole pairs separation and transfer. This results in significant suppression of Auger recombination up to six times at the GDY/MoS2 interface compared with the pristine materials owing to an ultrafast hot hole transfer from MoS2 to GDY. GDY/MoS2 device demonstrates notable photovoltaic behavior with a short‐circuit current of −1.3 × 10−5 A and a large open‐circuit voltage of 0.23 V under visible irradiation. As a positive‐charge‐attracting magnet, under illumination, alkyne‐rich framework induces positive photogating effect on the neighboring MoS2, further enhancing photocurrent. Consequently, the device exhibits broadband detection (453–1064 nm) with a maximum responsivity of 78.5 A W−1 and a high speed of 50 µs. Results open up a new promising strategy using GDY toward effective junction for future optoelectronic applications.
