Methods and approaches for teaching engineering disciplines are evolving to adapt to the needs of companies and society. Engineering Design is one of the areas most influenced by such changes and constantly striving to develop more effective and efficient strategies to prepare the soon-to-be engineers to face the challenges of a real working environment. This paper presents an approach used to teach the use of value models for concept trade-off in the preliminary design phase, in line with the industrial challenges highlighted by the literature on Value Driven Design. The approach is based on realistic design sessions assigning to master students a value assessment challenge. The paper describes the rationale of the approach, its set-up, and a validation activity run to compare the performances of the students with those of industrial practitioners. The results of the study show that the students taking part in the design sessions can produce results that do not statistically differ from those of industrial practitioners. Moreover, the students' self-reflection on the achievement of the intended learning outcomes show a high satisfaction toward the achievement of the educational objectives. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the rise of readily accessible computation and data storage capabilities, models have been increasingly leveraged for generating system data to support decision making. Moving beyond considerations of what makes a good model, Interactive Model-Centric Systems Engineering seeks to address core challenges as well as key implications associated with relying upon models for generating the data upon which important system decisions are made. Among these is the issue of understanding the consequences of model choice itself. This paper proposes three categories of models: performance, cost, and value, and addresses the question of value model trading. The concept is illustrated through a demonstration Space Tug satellite system case where four value models (multi-attribute utility, analytic hierarchy process, cost-benefit analysis, and measure of effectiveness) are each used to assess the goodness of potential system alternatives. The consequence of value model choice changes the Pareto efficient set of “best” system solutions, and a comparison of these sets reveals the potential of finding system solutions that are robust to value model choice, supporting the strategic goal of identifying resilient system decisions. - Abstract
This paper contributes to the discussion on value models as decision support in early design. Emerging from data collected through semi-structured interviews with 20 professionals in 3 manufacturing companies, the paper highlights the limitation of current development practices to promote cross-functional knowledge sharing about the stakeholders' lifecycle expectations to be met. This limits the ability to make decisions about aspects of value that are difficult to assess and quantify. The objective of the paper is then to propose the use of value models as 'boundary objects' to increase shared awareness about the design intent, triggering negotiations towards more value-adding design decisions. This role of the value model as a boundary object is studied through design experiments, using a combination of protocol analysis and observation technique on the video-recorded material.

Abstract: It has been argued that a value-driven approach can potentially eliminate troubling issues that arise during the design process, such as cost and schedule overrun, by taking a holistic perspective on how individual design decisions impact high-level attributes of concern. However, value-driven approaches can be difficult to implement in practice, at least partly because supporting tools and methods have not yet been sufficiently developed. Additionally, due to the multitude of researchers investigating the concept of value, it can be difficult to unambiguously characterize what defines an effective value model. In this paper, we attempt to address these issues by first reviewing the literature to produce a clear and concise enumeration of the characteristics of effective value models. Next, a three-stage systematic method is presented as a tool to aid in the specification of value models. To demonstrate the use of the method, a case study is presented that investigates the conceptual design of a multiple- input multiple output hybrid energy system. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The aim of this study was to develop a value model of wellness service. In this study, those persons who work in health care systems were recruited to participate in interviews for investigating the value of various roles and the effects of these values between the roles. Throughout this study, the flow model, sequence model and cultural model were established to explain the relationship between the different roles, the process being influenced by others, and the effects of other values in wellness-related activities. According to the models, the following features of value in wellness activities could be found: personal, interactive and temporal. Based on the result of this study, the investigating and presenting the relevance of effects between values more completely will be researched in the next study.

MULTIPLE criteria decision making ,DECISION making ,CLUSTER analysis (Statistics) ,UTILITY theory ,PROBLEM solving ,THOUGHT & thinking - Abstract
ABSTRACT Criteria are the central focus of multi-criteria decision analysis. Many authors have suggested using our values (or preferences) to define the criteria we use to evaluate alternatives. Value-focused thinking (VFT) is an important philosophy that advocates a more fundamental view of values in our decision making in our private and professional lives. VFT proponents advocate starting first with our values and then using our values to create decision opportunities, evaluate alternatives and finally develop improved alternatives. It has been 20 years since VFT was first introduced by Ralph Keeney. This paper surveys the VFT literature to provide a comprehensive summary of the significant applications, describe the main research developments and identify areas for future research. We review the scope and magnitude of VFT applications and the key developments in theory since VFT was introduced in 1992 and found 89 papers written in 29 journals from 1992 to 2010. We develop about 20 research questions that include the type of article (application, theory, case study, etc.), the size of the decision space (which, when given, ranged from $200K to billions of dollars), the contribution documented in the article (application benefits) and the research contributions (categorized by preferences, uncertainties and alternatives). After summarizing the answers to these questions, we conclude the paper with suggestions for improving VFT applications and potential future research. We found a large number of significant VFT applications and several useful research contributions. We also found an increasing number of VFT papers written by international authors. With ever-increasing terror threats, governments and security officials would benefit from a better understanding of what motivates terrorists to cause social unrest. A recent research trend is on gaining greater knowledge about the values of malicious agents to help manage the risk of terrorism. As a result, there seems to be the potential to use decision analysis as a means to model what may drive malicious agents to commit harmful actions. So far, research on this topic has assumed static preferences of such agents. In this paper, we present a framework that may be used to infer how terrorists' priorities may change over time and their impact on their choice of a harmful action. We suggest modeling state-dependent priorities of a terrorist group via a multicriteria model that incorporates state-dependent priorities to account for preference change caused by exogenous triggers and representing the environment as a system dynamics model. We describe how terrorists' visceral factors may affect the prioritization of objectives and show how such an analysis may support risk management in this context. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

INTERNET , *SIMULATION methods & models , *CRYPTOGRAPHY , *DIGITAL watermarking , *HUMAN fingerprints , *SCIENCE teachers - Abstract
Exemplary science instructors use inquiry to tailor content to student's learning needs; traditional textbooks treat science as a set of facts and a rigid curriculum. Publishers now allow instructors to compile pieces of published and/or self-authored text to make custom textbooks. This brings numerous advantages, including the ability to produce smaller, cheaper text and added flexibility on the teaching models used. Moreover, the internet allows instructors to decentralize textbooks through easy access to educational objects such as audiovisual simulations, individual textbook chapters, and scholarly research articles. However, these new opportunities bring with them new problems. With educational materials easy to access, manipulate and duplicate, it is necessary to define intellectual property boundaries, and the need to secure documents against unlawful copying and use is paramount. Engineers are developing and enhancing information embedding technologies, including steganography, cryptography, watermarking, and fingerprinting, to label and protect intellectual property. While these are showing their utility in securing information, hackers continue to find loop holes in these protection schemes, forcing engineers to constantly assess the algorithms to make them as secure as possible. As newer technologies rise, people still question whether custom publishing is desirable. Many instructors see the process as complex, costly, and substandard in comparison to using traditional text. Publishing companies are working to improve attitudes through advertising. What lacks is peer reviewed evidence showing that custom publishing improves learning. Studies exploring the effect of custom course materials on student attitude and learning outcomes are a necessary next step. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Decisions are made to achieve objectives. A qualitative list of the objectives for a decision is the foundation for a value model that unambiguously represents objectives in a quantitative manner. The objectives guide thinking and the value model provides a basis for analyzing alternatives to best meet the desired objectives. This article illustrates the usefulness of clearly identifying objectives and developing value models to support anti-terrorism analysis. It outlines procedures to develop value models for the Department of Homeland Security and for terrorist organizations. The later is useful to both design anti-terrorism alternatives and suggest possible terrorist priorities and actions. An example that develops a terrorist value model for the theft and misuse of plutonium is presented. Several uses of value models for anti-terrorist activities are discussed and suggestions for developing such value models are outlined. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Interactive Model-Centric Systems Engineering research effort is interested in developing knowledge necessary to leverage the increasing involvement of computational models in system design. A key activity in such model-centric environments is the selection and usage of models to generate data for decision making. Extending work from prior demonstrations, this paper presents a case study where insights are gained via usage and comparison of multiple models. The results highlight the need to explore how model choice and trade-off can impact the attractiveness of alternative systems. Sixteen tradespaces of cost-benefit data are generated via combined pairwise usage of four alternative evaluative models (performance and cost calculations) and four alternative value models (calculating the “goodness” of different levels of performance and cost). These tradespaces are used to determine attractive Pareto efficient Space Tug vehicles, as well as insights that are less sensitive to model choice. No best model is shown, but rather different models provide insights into different aspects of the system evaluation and valuation activity. Two categories of insights are highlighted: patterns in the structure of the decision problem (i.e., how “value” is defined and what systems might be feasible) and artifacts of the models themselves (i.e., how to mitigate against misleading results due to model abstractions).

This bachelor's thesis is, as the itself name indicates, concerned with the concept of education of children by their parents - vegetarians, possibly vegans. What is examined is whether they are trying to transfer their own model of values - vegetarianism or veganism onto the child, but also what aspects will influence their future value orientation the most during the course of their primary socialisation. The influence of the informing parent's partner as well as that of grandparents on both sides is considered, further on the influence of the educational institution the child attends is factored in. It is there where the child is confronted with different norms and values than those that the child can be familiar with from the home and parents are then have to resolve the arisen situation. The thesis itself is divided into three main sections which are the following: Theoretical Introduction, Methodology and Research. The first section is dedicated to the theoretical background enabling the confimation of data necessary for the analysis itself. Specifically it outlines the value basis of vegetarianism, explains the difference between vegetarianism and its more radical form veganism. It delineates the influence of family and educational institutions on the latter value orientation of the child....

We model capital flows among Chinese provinces using a theory-based variance decomposition that allows us to gauge the importance of various channels of external adjustments at the regional level: variation in intertemporal prices—domestic and international interest rates and the real exchange rate—and intertemporal variation in quantities (cash flows of output, investment and government spending). We find that our simple framework can account for around 85 percent of the variation in regional capital flows over the 1985-2010 period. Our results suggest that the relative importance of private and state-owned enterprises, a province’s level of integration into the world economy and its sectoral composition play an important role for external adjustment vis-à-vis the rest of China and the world. Specifically, we find strong empirical support for the view that differential access of private and state-owned enterprises to finance is a key driver of China’s surpluses. We discuss implications of our results for global imbalances in capital flows.

We study international business cycles and capital flows in the UK, the United States and the Emerging Periphery in the period 1885-1939. Based on the same set of parameters, our model explains current account dynamics under both the Classical Gold Standard and during the Interwar period. We interpret this as evidence for Gold Standard mentality: the expectation formation mechanism with respect to major macroeconomic variables driving the current account - output, exchange rates and interest rates - has remained fundamentally stable between the two periods. Nonetheless, the macroeconomic environment changed: Volatility increased generally, but less so for international capital flows than for GDP. This pattern is consistent with shocks in the Interwar period becoming more persistent and more global.

In the healthcare sector, different healthcare providers, such as home care, primary care, and hospital clinics, collaborate in order to increase values for patients, such as better health state, increased knowledge on health conditions, and increased feeling of safety. To govern and evaluate such collaboration, we need a tool to understand how different patient values are related to each other, how values are related to goals, and how values and goals are related to actions planned and carried out among healthcare providers. Thereby, we can measure, analyse and redesign existing actions in order to better achieve desirable values. Furthermore, we also need a tool for finding new innovative goals and actions that better create desirable values. In this paper, we propose such a tool, in the form of a method based on value, goal and action models. Value models depict actors and the valuable resources they exchange as well as the purpose of the resources exchanged. Using these value models as a base, we are able to systematically identify high level goals and more detailed goals, as well as actions supporting these goals. Thereby, we will attain traceability from actions, via goals and values, which the actions realise. A case study from the Swedish healthcare sector is used to ground and apply our proposed method REMS

- Abstract
Southern Sudan had been at civil war with the north since 1955 for various reasons to include religion, politics, and oil. The second civil war ended in 2005 with the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA). A promise outlined in the CPA was the opportunity for Southern Sudan to vote for their independence from the North. The referendum took place this January with 98 percent of votes in favor of separation. This is great news for the people of Southern Sudan and champions of democracy worldwide. However, Southern Sudan is plagued by many of its own internal problems and instability and there is the possibility of civil war. In support of the emergence of South Sudan and other countries worldwide, our research determined that the four main areas of focus in predicting civil war or the potential for conflict were security, social, economic, and governance. More specific conflict indicators were developed within each of these functions. To better understand the inter-relationships of these functions a Systemigram and a value model were developed. Conflict in Sudan is far from a simple problem. There are many factors that influence other factors and add or take away from the possibility of civil war. The Systemigram attempts to mitigate some of the confusion by providing a visual representation of the problem in Southern Sudan which enables us to examine the links and interactions between the functions and indicators of the system. The value model is a mathematical model that takes statistics for each of the indicators developed as inputs and computes a value which when added to the other indicators values provide a total score indicating the likely progression of Southern Sudan toward civil war. These two products work together: the intent of the Systemigram is to show the interactions between the indicators and help validate the method of scoring using the value model.

- Abstract
As compared to their mounted peers, dismounted soldiers lack effective radio communications, situation awareness displays, and request or reporting systems that integrate with other elements of the combined arms team. This project looks to emerging commercial technologies for mobile cellular networks as a cost effective means to fill these gaps. These technologies are in wide use across the international commercial sector and allow robust and high bandwidth communications in a very small package. They are employed in all types of terrain, and international standards have emerged that allow communications between disparate systems. The study team concluded that a brigade/battalion owned CDMA network delivered the most value at the lowest cost as compared to Nett Warrior systems. This is a standalone unclassified network owned by the brigade. The brigade decides who to allow to enter the network and what information to provide on that network. The network consists of static cell towers on bases, mobile cell towers in vehicles, and if necessary, dismounted cell towers covering small patrols.

- Abstract
Throughout Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom, the Department of Defense (DoD) faced challenges not experienced in its previous military operations. The enemy's unwavering dedication to the use of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) against the coalition forces continues to challenge the day-to-day operations of the current war. The Joint Improvised Explosive Device Defeat Organization's (JIEDDO) proposal solicitation process enables military and nonmilitary organizations to request funding for the development of Counter-Improvised Explosive Device (C-IED) projects. Decision Analysis (DA) methodology serves as a tool to assist the decision maker (DM) in making an informed decision. This research applies Value Focused Thinking (VFT), a specific methodology within DA, to the JIEDDO proposal selection process to assist DMs in filtering out proposals that do not meet desired C-IED objectives. This research evaluated the validity of the previously developed JIEDDO Proposal Value Model to address the following questions: (1) Does the value model adequately reflect JIEDDO's decision process; and (2) Given the dynamic environment of the current war, how confident can we be in the model's ability to continually and effectively screen proposals based JIEDDO's current values? The author utilizes multivariate techniques to investigate JIEDDO's ability to make consistent decisions within their proposal evaluation process. Once it has been determined that the model effectively screens proposals, it is possible to proceed with the second question. By consolidating and applying n-way sensitivity analysis techniques, the author proposes a consistent sensitivity analysis image profiling technique., The original document contains color images.
