Cette étude visait à évaluer l’effet du stress thermique subis par les vaches laitières Holstein en Tunisie. Les données de contrôles laitiers : PL, MG, MP et le SCS collectés entre 2013 et 2019 chez 947 vaches dans 23 troupeaux ont été combinées avec un THI calculé à partir des données météorologiques enregistrées entre 2013 et 2019. Le modèle non linéaire de Wood a été appliqué à la modélisation de la courbe de lactation. L’analyse de la variance a été appliquée pour tester les effets de trois niveaux de THI (THI>72; 6872) sur la production de lait, sa composition et les paramètres de la courbe de lactation. Les résultats ont montré des pertes dues au stress thermique. Une diminution du rendement en lait et du pourcentage de matières grasses et de protéines a été signalée. Ainsi, les rendements en matières grasses et en protéines ont eu tendance à diminuer régulièrement avec l’augmentation des valeurs de THI. Le rendement laitier variait de 17,882 ± 0,064 (68 72), le pourcentage de matières grasses et de protéines variait de 3,551 ± 0,041 à 3,449 ± 0,026 et de 3,246 ± 0,031 à 3,113 ± 0,029 % pour 68 72, respectivement. Les modèles de score somatique ont été marqués par une augmentation (de 4,143 à 4,358) aux plages les plus élevées de THI> 72, et des valeurs diminuées (de 4,143 à 3,857) aux plages les plus basses de THI. L’étude a porté sur les effets des caractéristiques du troupeau (race, taille, parité et zone d’étude) et des pratiques d’élevage (chaleurs induites/naturelles, pratique du flushing ou non, et durée du tarissement) sur les taux de fécondité et de fertilité de 721 vaches laitières (VL) des races Montbéliarde (n = 379) et Prim’Holstein (n = 342) réparties sur 23 troupeaux, nées et mises à la reproduction en Algérie. Les paramètres de fécondité ont révélé un intervalle entre le vêlage et les premières chaleurs de 86,8 ± 48 jours, entre le vêlage et la première insémination artificielle (IA) de 108 ± 80,4 jours, entre la première IA et l’IA fécondante de 42,9 ± 85,2 jours, entre le vêlage et l’insémination fécondante de 152 ± 116 jours, et entre vêlages de 427 ± 122,8 jours. Un taux de réussite moyen en première IA de 54,8 % (VL) et 38,8 ± 20 % (troupeau), un index de fertilité apparent de 1,83, et 19,3 % de VL inséminées trois fois et plus (dans 16,2 ± 11 des troupeaux) ont été enregistrés. La fécondité plus que la fertilité était loin des objectifs. La race n’a eu aucun effet significatif sur la fertilité (p > 0,05), mais les performances de reproduction ont varié significativement (p < 0,05) en fonction de la taille du troupeau, de la parité, de la région d’étude, des chaleurs induites ou naturelles, et de la pratique ou non du flushing. La fécondité était plus faible chez les animaux dont la durée du tarissement dépassait 60 jours (p < 0,05). Une mise à la reproduction tardive au-delà de 80 jours post-partum a été le paramètre qui a affecté le plus les performances de reproduction des VL dans la zone d’étude.

L’objectif principal était d’évaluer l’impact d’un complément alimentaire, le Vitanimal (mélange de coques et de tourteau de coton), sur les performances laitières des vaches Borgou dans un contexte de rareté du fourrage en saison sèche et de réduction de la mobilité pastorale. L’évaluation a concerné un troupeau de 15 vaches ayant eu au moins deux mises bas à la Ferme d’élevage de l’Okpara. Les animaux ont été répartis en trois lots : le lot 1, lot témoin, a bénéficié uniquement du fourrage des parcours naturels et artificiels de la ferme, de pierres à lécher et d’eau ad libitum ; les lots 2 et 3 ont bénéficié de la même alimentation que les témoins avec en plus respectivement 2 et 4 kg du complément alimentaire. Les quantités de lait produites et les refus du complément ont été collectés et quantifiés chaque jour pendant 90 jours. Les analyses ont montré des différences significatives (p < 0,05) pour l’ingestion du complément alimentaire entre les lots 2 et 3, et pour les refus qui ont été plus importants dans le lot 3. Le Vitanimal a eu des effets significatifs sur les performances des vaches. Les productions journalières de lait ont été de 0,76 ± 0,35 kg, 1,04 ± 0,35 kg et 1,16 ± 0,46 kg respectivement pour les lots 1, 2 et 3. Ces quantités ont augmenté avec la quantité de complément servie. Toutefois, la ration du lot 2 a été plus rentable, soit 75 % de taux de rentabilité contre 25 % pour le lot 3.

Dans la région de Diffa au Niger, une enquête a été conduite dans 140 exploi­tations, afin d’analyser les pratiques d’élevage et les performances laitières des bovins de race Kouri. Par ailleurs, les traits morphométriques indicateurs de per­formance laitière chez les éleveurs ont été documentés. Les éleveurs étaient des sédentaires et les troupeaux de taille moyenne pour la majorité (36 ± 30 têtes par exploitation). Chez les vaches ayant eu les plus récentes lactations com­plètes, la production laitière par vache a été en moyenne de 2,7 ± 1,4 litres par jour pour une durée moyenne de lactation de 7,2 ± 2,8 mois. Chez les vaches considérées comme les meilleures laitières, la production de lait par vache a été de 4,2 ± 1,5 litres par jour pour une durée moyenne de lactation de 8,9 ± 2,7 mois. Bien que les pratiques d’élevage aient été similaires pour de nombreux aspects parmi les différents groupes ethniques, les critères morphométriques de sélection des vaches laitières de race Kouri ont varié selon l’appartenance eth­nique. Les caractéristiques phénotypiques ainsi associées à la race Kouri dans les groupes ethniques identifiés étaient principalement la longueur du bassin, la largeur du poitrail, la longueur des trayons, la hauteur au garrot et la longueur de la queue. Il est important de tenir compte du savoir endogène en matière d’amélioration génétique, car les paramètres morphométriques identifiés dans cette étude comme indicateurs de performance ne faisaient pas l’unanimité au sein des groupes ethniques.

L’élevage bovin laitier au Maroc a connu ces dernières années une évolution mouvementée. Cette activité contribue pourtant fortement à l’approvisionnement des laiteries et des marchés urbains, ainsi qu’au maintien des conditions de vie en zone rurale. La présente étude a eu pour objectif de caractériser les performances techniques et économiques de l’élevage bovin au regard des contraintes qu’il doit surmonter. Dans une première partie, le prix de revient (coût de production) du lait a été étudié sur la base d’une enquête conduite dans 86 étables réparties dans les principaux bassins d’élevage du Maroc. Deux méthodes de calcul ont permis de porter un jugement sur la rentabilité de cette activité. Dans une seconde partie, les manques à gagner issus de rendements laitiers limités ont été caractérisés et mis en relation avec les rations ingérées par les vaches en lactation dans six étables, au cours de deux saisons successives (le printemps et l’été) dans une région favorable du pays (le périmètre irrigué du Gharb). Ce travail a souligné la faible rentabilité des fermes bovines et les marges d’amélioration en matière de rationnement, surtout pour les vaches à haut potentiel. Le conseil aux éleveurs permettant d’améliorer les pratiques d’alimentation des animaux et la revalorisation du prix de vente du lait à la ferme constituent deux conditions importantes du maintien durable de l’élevage bovin laitier au Maroc.

The study was carried out on 1727 lactations of 493 Holstein cows and 1148 lactations of 319 Montbeliarde cows kept on a private farm. Data were collected from 1997 to 2007. The age at first calving of Holsteins and Montbeliardes was almost 29 months. The calving interval, and the interval between calving and fertilizing insemination of Montbeliardes were 385.6 and 83.1 days, respectively. They were 9.7 and 30 days, respectively, shorter than those of Holsteins. The lactation length of Holsteins was 4.2 days shorter and the dry period 14.1 days longer than those of Montbeliardes. However, Holsteins produced 623.1 kg more of milk and 30.2 kg more of fat per lactation of reference than Montbeliardes. In conclusion, Montbeliardes had a slight advantage with regard to reproduction and a slight disadvantage with regard to milk production compared to Holsteins. The study of other traits will be necessary to improve comparison of these breeds.

The purpose of this study was to assess changes in milk yield (MY), daily weight gain (DWG), dry matter intake capacity (DMI), feed intake (FI) and energy intake (ME) of Borgou cattle in separate feeding systems. Performance records of 48 lactating cows, raised at Okpara State farm, were analyzed. The cows were distributed in three treatment groups, corresponding to three feeding systems: grazing on natural pasture (FSI); grazing on natural pasture plus supplementation with 2 kg cottonseed cakes (FSII); and rationing with 20 kg Panicum maximum C1, 2 kg Brachiaria ruziziensis, 1 kg Aeschynomene histrix and 2 kg cottonseed cakes (FSIII). Mean estimates were 392.0 ± 28.7 g/d, 1.77 ± 0.84 L/d, 7.88 ± 0.39 kg DM, 118.16 ± 8.59 g DM/kg0.75 and 71.62 ± 4.47 Mj for DWG, MY, DMI, FI and ME, respectively. Analyses of variance revealed the significance of non-genetic factors such as feeding system, age at calving, season of calving, stage of lactation, parity number, and feeding system by calving season interaction (p < 0.05) on DWG and MY. The greatest impact on DWG and MY was obtained in FSII with 664.7 ± 30.9 g/d and 2.00 ± 0.95 L/d, respectively, followed by FSIII with 318.9 ± 24.9 g/d and 1.90 ± 0.93 L/d.

The objective of the study was to compare the performances of imported heifers of Montbeliarde breed and three successive generations of cows of the same breed and born in a semiarid area of Algeria. Mean weights of newborns and adults of fourth generation and over were lower than those of the standard breed because of local breeding practices and environmental conditions. The calving interval, milk yield (2200-3250 kg) and lactation length (282-309 days) varied according to the rainfall effect on fodder resources. The milk yield of imported cows was 20 to 30% higher than that of locally born cows, but their reproductive performances were lower. The intervals between calving and fertilization (153 days), and between calvings (441 days) of imported cows were longer by 36-44 days and 41-49 days, respectively. The calving interval of successive generations born locally was similar (392-400 days) and regular, showing reproductive adaptation and similar standard lactation (2755-2811 kg). Real milk yields varied between generations because of variations in the lactation length (279-296 days). The productive period became shorter from one generation to the next, affecting lifetime milk yield and number of calves born. These results specified transformations related to animal material and the limits of the dairy livestock model developed in Algeria.

From 1991 to 2003, 75,650 daily milk records from 111 Friesian cows maintained at Mahwa station in Burundi were used to study the effects of the lactation length, age at calving, year and month of lactation, and parity on daily milk yield (DMY). Data were analyzed by the GLM procedure in SAS. All factors affected DMY significantly (p < 0.001). The overall average was 8.71 L/d. The peak milk yield of 11.48 ± 0.20 L/d occurred at the 15th day in milk on the lactation curve. The estimated linear (L/month) and quadratic (L/month²) regression coefficients for age at calving (in months) were –0.26 and 0.0052 in first parity, 0.49 and –0.0056 in second parity, and –0.22 and 0.0013 in third parity and above, respectively. Milk production decreased according to the year of lactation with the highest decrease in 1993. The minimum milk production was observed in 1995 with 6.91 ± 0.17 L/d and the maximum in 1991 with 15.55 ± 0.45 L/d. Milk production was significantly higher in February (9.75 ± 0.13 L/d) in the middle of the rainy season than in September (7.60 ± 0.13 L/d) at the end of the dry season. Least-squares means for DMY for first, second, and third lactations and above were 11.47 ± 0.30, 5.23 ± 0.09 and 10.11 ± 0.06 L/d, respectively.

In the last decades, cattle feeding became the main constraint after disease management. A study was carried out in the periurban area of Sikasso, an average size city in the cotton area of Mali, to characterize changes in the feeding strategies of breeders selling dairy products in town. A retrospective survey involving 27 herd managers was conducted to identify changes in practices on the long term. Fourteen herds were monitored during one year to characterize and quantify feeding practices and milk production. Four feeding strategies of animal husbandry were distinguished: 1) sedentary grazing herds, with low supplementation, mainly for draft, and young animals; 2) sedentary grazing herds, with low supplementation of dairy cows; 3) transhumant herds, with dairy cows staying near the town for the sale of milk, and low supplementation of dairy cows; 4) herds grazing far away from town, with dairy cows kept in town and fed high levels of concentrates. Herd mobility resulted from a decrease in grazing lands around the town. Supplementation, based on forage biomass reserves and above all purchased concentrates, was made available to agropastors through an advance on the benefits of cotton or milk sales, but it was hard to maintain on the long term. Profits from the trade enabled a few breeders in town to develop a herd of improved dairy cows fed large amounts of concentrates.

Avec cinq litres par habitant et par an, la consommation de produits laitiers à Madagascar reste faible. Toutefois, diverses campagnes de communication sont actuellement menées pour inciter la population à consommer davantage de produits laitiers et pour motiver les producteurs à améliorer la qualité du lait et les quantités produites (3). La majeure partie de la production nationale (90 p. 100) provient de la zone du triangle laitier situé sur les hauts plateaux de Madagascar dans les régions d’Antsi­rabe, d’Antananarivo et de Tsiroanomandidy. Toutefois, l’état sanitaire du cheptel laitier reste peu documenté et les maladies zoonotiques telles que la tuberculose demeurent négligées. La tuberculose bovine est une maladie animale chro­nique due à la bactérie Mycobacterium bovis. Elle peut être contractée par l’homme par voie aérienne ou par la consomma­tion de lait cru provenant de vaches infectées (1). En l’absence de données sanitaires récentes sur le niveau d’in­fection des cheptels laitiers par M. bovis et afin d’élaborer des stratégies de contrôle, une étude épidémiologique a été réalisée dans 15 communes (Fokontany) du district d’Antanifotsy dans la région du Vakinankaratra. Un dépistage a été effectué sur 429 vaches laitières par intra­dermo-tuberculination selon la méthode recommandée par l’Organisation mondiale de la santé animale (2) pour la détec­tion de la tuberculose bovine. Une dose de 0,1 ml (2 000 UI) de tuberculine bovine a été injectée par voie intradermique au niveau du cou de la vache. Lorsque la réaction est positive, un épaississement du pli de la peau est observé après 48 heures. La réaction est considérée comme négative quand le gonflement de la peau mesure moins de 2 mm avec un cutimètre. Elle est douteuse si aucun signe clinique n’est observé et si l’augmenta­tion de l’épaississement du pli de la peau mesure plus de 2 mm et moins de 4 mm. En revanche, Elle est positive si des signes cliniques sont observés ou s’il y a une augmentation de 4 mm ou plus de l’épaisseur du pli de la peau. Le diagnostic a été douteux pour seulement quatre vaches (0,9 p. 100) après la deuxième lecture (tableau I). Les 425 autres tests ont été négatifs. Alors qu’une très petite quantité du lait produit dans le district d’Antanifotsy est transformée localement, la grande majorité est collectée, souvent mélangée avec des laits d’origine inconnue, et acheminée vers la capitale. Sans traçabilité ni contrôle sanitaire le long de la chaîne de commercialisation, les laits crus vendus sur les marchés finaux présentent un risque de contamination pour les consommateurs et, même si nos résultats indiquent une faible prévalence de la tuberculose dans la population bovine laitière d’Antanifotsy, la pasteurisation du lait produit à Madagascar reste donc nécessaire.

The aim of the study is to evaluate the individual cell counts (CCI) as well as the milking conditions in large dairy farms in Sousse, which is a semi-arid coast zone of Tunisia. That‟s why, a sample composed of two dairy herds that included 154 lactating dairy cows, was submitted to udder health review and also to hygienic, technical and technological evaluations. It comes out, particularly, that the arithmetic average (MA) of the dairy cows‟ CCI of the entire sample is 371000 Cell. /mL, which is relatively high. The descriptive investigation of CCI showed that 82% of CCI are inferior to 300000 Cell. /mL, according to the standards applied in France and Tunisia, and 75% of CCI are inferior to 200000 Cell. /mL, according to the canadian standard. The examination of milking procedure showed that a lot of hygienic practices were not respected. Despite the availability of necessary equipment for good milking practices, in most cases, the milkers opt for the bad habits. However, the hygiene of milking parlor and chiller room was almost respected. The partial check of milking systems using the Pulsator Testor revealed vacuum and pulsation parameters irregularities. In fact, the inspection results of one the farms showed vacuum levels and pulsation rates that exceeded the standards in almost all the milking posts. In West Africa, milk collection and transformation farms have taken on a new lease of life since the 1990s. The article aims at analyzing the reasons for this interest, and to measure its limits. Based on examples from Senegal and Mali in particular, the authors show that this apparent success may be all relative when checked at the national economy level. But this success is still today obvious at the social level, especially in terms of profitability to the initially targeted pastoral populations.

Out of 528 milk samples obtained from dairy cows with mastitis, 31 (5.8%) had Escherichia coli strains, causative agent of mastitis. These strains were screened for the presence of Shiga toxin-producing (stx1 and stx2) and intimin (eae) genes. Twenty (64.5%) strains were detected by PCR to harbor the Shiga toxin genes (13 the stx1 gene, 3 the stx2 gene, and 4 the stx1-stx2 genes). Three (9.6%) of the E. coli strains studied were eae positive non Shiga toxinproducing. The E. coli strains were also examined for resistance to 15 antimicrobial agents. The most commonly observed resistance was to novobiocin (100%), lincomycin (96.8%), penicillin (96.8%) and erythromycin (90.3%). All the strains tested showed resistance to at least one antimicrobial agent and multidrug resistance was very common (96.8%).

One hundred and eleven cattle farmers were investigated in the Sidi Allal Tazi region (Gharb irrigated area, Northwestern Morocco). Data forms were filled out by the farmers to specify cows’ performances and management, and factors associated with cattle production. Multidimensional statistical methods helped identify the variables that contributed to differentiate the animal husbandry types. Five groups of farmers were thus identified using parameters related to farms’ structure (land tenure and number of animals), dairy cattle practices (fodder feed, supplementation) and other types of agricultural activities (sheep breeding, food grain crops, vegetable crops). Two types of farming systems stood out with regard to the intensification of dairy cattle production: the first type consisted of large farms where all production means were mobilized to reach maximum intensification (green forage all year round, high quantities of concentrates). The second type consisted of farms with lower means of production, but when their resources were added to each other, their specialization pointed to dairy production as in the first type. At the opposite, the remaining three types progressively appeared with less intensive dairy strategies, cattle herds assuming in a more and more pronounced way multifunctions: they helped diversify income sources by the use of other types of meat production, produce manure for soil fertility preservation, and provide assets for farmers without bank accounts. This diversity in farmers’ strategies must be taken into account by decision-makers of dairy and even beef production development in Gharb region.

Stylosanthes hamata, Calopogonium mucunoides and Macroptilium lathyroides were intercropped with maize in a randomized block design. Age of maturity, forage dry matter and seed yields were determined at the end of their cycles. In another experiment, S. hamata and C. mucunoides were planted and divided into cutting, grazing and control subplots. Lactating zebu cows were put in the grazing subplots, while cutting subplots were cut at the end of the grazing period. Intercropping had no significant effect on the age of flowering and seeding. The establishment rate was however slower in intercropped C. mucunoides and S. hamata. The forage dry matter yield was similar in pure and intercropped C. mucunoides and M. lathyroides, respectively, but significantly higher in pure S. hamata plots (p < 0.01). The seed yield was similar in the two treatments of S. hamata and M. lathyroides, but significantly higher in pure C. mucunoides plots (p < 0.001). In the establishment year, grazing and cutting reduced seed yield of S. hamata (p < 0.001) compared to control. However, the difference was largely offset by a 35% milk yield increase in cows grazing S. hamata. These results indicate that forage legume seed production is feasible and manageable in an integrated production system.

Heritabilities, repeatabilities and genetic and phenotypic correlations among milk yield, fat yield and fat percentage were estimated using an animal model and 20,140 records of 11,618 Holstein-Friesian cows enrolled in the Moroccan official milk-recording program between 1990 and 1999. Heritabilities for milk yield, fat yield and fat percentage were 0.29, 0.27, and 0.39, respectively, and their repeatabilities were 0.33, 0.32, and 0.39, respectively. Genetic correlations of milk yield with fat yield and with fat percentage were 0.96 and –0.32, respectively, and correlation of fat yield with fat percentage was –0.06. Phenotypic correlations were 0.96 between milk and fat yields, –0.28 between milk yield and fat percentage, and –0.03 between fat yield and percentage. It was concluded that these genetic and phenotypic parameters could be used for the genetic evaluation of dairy cattle in Morocco.

De fevrier a aout 2012, 507 vaches de reforme, de race croisee Holstein x Lai Sind et d’age moyen de 8,5 ans, ont ete examinees ante mortem (determination de l’age par l’examen de la denture, evaluation du score corporel, examen vaginal au moyen d’un speculum) et post mortem (examen echographique des ovaires, examen du contenu uterin). Pres de la moitie (44,4 p. 100) ont eu un score corporel inferieur a 2,5. Les frequences du pneumovagin et de l’urovagin ont ete respectivement de 33,1 et 14,7 p. 100 ; l’age et le score corporel ont exerce un effet significatif sur la frequence de ces pathologies. Les frequences des ecoulements vaginaux et des contenus uterins anormaux ont ete respectivement de 12,1 et 5,4 p. 100. Sur les 507 vaches examinees, 226 vaches (44,6 p. 100) etaient en anoestrus. La frequence des anoestrus associes a une gestation a ete de 4,9 p. 100, et la frequence des anoestrus pathologiques fonctionnels (types 0, I et II), associes a un kyste, a un pyometre a ete respectivement de 37,3, 2, 0,4. Les anoestrus pathologiques de type 0 et I ont ete plus frequemment observes chez les vaches maigres et chez celles agees de moins de six ans.

Une enquête sur les pratiques de détection des chaleurs a été réalisée dans 222 exploitations bovines, réparties dans cinq régions (wilayas) du centre de l’Algérie (Tizi Ouzou, Blida, Médéa, Tipaza et Bouira). Le questionnaire utilisé contenait des informations générales relatives à l’élevage (nombre de femelles, stabulation, spécialisation) mais aussi les pratiques de détection des chaleurs (périodes d’observation, signes observés) et les moyens complémentaires éventuellement utilisés. La majorité des éleveurs (57 p. 100) ont été confrontés à un problème de détection des chaleurs. Dans 49 p. 100 des cas seulement, ils inséminaient pour la première fois leurs vaches 50 à 90 jours après le vêlage. Un éleveur sur deux (53 p. 100) détectait les chaleurs deux fois par jour et 40 p. 100 les observaient trois fois par jour, cette activité étant pratiquée de manière aléatoire. Ils basaient prioritairement leur constat d’oestrus sur la présence d’un écoulement vulvaire (19 p. 100) ou sur l’acceptation du chevauchement (16 p. 100). La taille du troupeau ou la spécialisation ont été sans influence sur la fréquence des signes considérés. Les vaches n’ayant pas présenté des signes de chaleurs au cours des 60 premiers jours suivant le vêlage ont fait l’objet d’un examen clinique par un vétérinaire dans 76 p. 100 des élevages. Les moyens complémentaires de détection tels que le calendrier rotatif, ou le crayon détecteur n’ont été utilisés que par 34 p. 100 des éleveurs. Les facteurs responsables de la manifestation des chaleurs, les moments et le nombre d’observations, l’examen des anoestrus post-partum et l’utilisation des moyens complémentaires ont été influencés par la spécialisation et la taille de l’élevage, contrairement aux signes des chaleurs, la période d’attente et la difficulté de détection.
