2. Crafting Good Indicators: Human–Machine Entanglements in Brazil's 2022 Population Census.

Big data analytics have radically transformed data collection protocols in population censuses. Yet despite the unprecedented degree of automation these technologies afford, much of the critical work that goes into making data 'actionable' still hinges on the ethical labour of data operators in these novel human–machine settings. By following training activities and conducting interviews with technologists who worked on Brazil's 2022 population census, this article traces the workings of a fraud-detecting system designed to reduce costs and improve data quality and collection. Our ethnography identifies two competing modes of truth-making, which we term 'probabilistic' and 'performative', whereby numbers and census-takers 'tame' each other. Tracking human–machine data entanglements on the fringes of calculation centres helps unpack how futurities are affectively negotiated and woven into the political fabric of these political technologies. Le problème de la véridiction peut être abordé sous l’angle du « croire » en tant que jugement épistémique. Cette perspective amène à vérifier les conditions qui font croire vrai un Texte-Discours. L’étude sur le croire proposée touche d’abord le problème du « monde naturel » envisagé comme « système de croyances » (épistémès) qui déterminent l’adhésion à/la reconnaissance de certaines valeurs qui, à leur tour, sanctionnent comme « réel » le monde sensé dans lequel nous sommes immergés. Le « croire » concerne aussi la grammaire narrative à propos des croyances culturelles présupposées des sujets. Ces deux points pourraient constituer le fondement d’une sémiotique de la culture qui jetterait un pont entre les travaux de Greimas et ceux de Lotman.

Cet article propose une analyse approfondie des réflexions de Friedrich Nietzsche sur les notions de vérité et de mensonge en lien avec le mythe et d’autres formes symboliques, à la lumière de la théorie de la véridiction. Il s’attache d’abord à mieux cerner les problématiques soulevées par Nietzsche concernant le rôle du mythe dans la culture. Ensuite, il met à profit les observations de Nietzsche et les recherches sémiotiques contemporaines sur le mythe afin d’explorer l’enjeu de la problématique sémiotique de la véridiction. Cette dernière s’inscrit dans le cadre plus large des modalités épistémiques et est à lire en relation avec les problématiques épistémiques de la philosophie du langage et de la philosophie générale.

Nous considérerons en particulier deux éléments qui n’ont pas été suffisamment discutés jusqu’à présent : la catégorie de non-pertinence et le rôle des codes culturels dans la définition des régimes de vérité. La proposition théorique suivante vise à intégrer ces éléments dans le carré de la véridiction pour le rendre plus complexe, dans la conviction qu’il reste un précieux outil d’articulation conceptuelle.

6. The fiction of identity: veridiction and the contract of attention in the Netflix show Clickbait

The article utilises the analysis of the Netflix show Clickbait to explore cultural shifts in the standard logic of veridiction, which seem to break with the Greimasian model of veridictory modalities to welcome diverse procedures –such as faire semblant and authentication– governing the communication and perception of truth. Rather than a problem affecting only discourses, I aim to argue that the production of subjective identities, both in the physical world and mediated contexts, is also impacted by this change in our relationship with signs. By presenting a dialogue between theories concerned with traditional and emerging mechanisms related to veridiction, the article offers a reflection on the production and deployment of identity, and the blurring of lines between reality, unreality, and fiction, which produces simulacral dynamics shifting the goal of interactions from a sanction- to an attention-oriented model.

Lorsqu’on se réfère à la notion de véridiction dans l’analyse sémiotique littéraire, le référent n’est jamais loin. D’un côté, le discours prend la réalité qu’il reproduit pour modèle absolu. De l’autre, il se présente comme son propre centre de référence en développant diverses stratégies de faire croire être vrai. Dans les deux cas, il doit proposer un contrat de véridiction fondé sur un faire croire auquel se soumet l’énonciation. L’étude du roman Au bout du silence de Laurent Owondo donne lieu à une réflexion révélant dans quelles conditions la véridiction littéraire se meut en une épistémologie propre modifiant à l’occasion notre perception de ce que sont le sens, le langage et la réalité référentielle. Cet article propose donc de renouveler deux des concepts majeurs de la sémiotique greimassienne : les concepts de véridiction et de vérité, cette transformation étant rendue possible par l’ouverture de la sémiotique aux autres disciplines. Ici, les sciences cognitives avec lesquelles on peut voir comment l’énonciation transforme la réalité en « matière » tensive. L’interprétation sémiotique de ce phénomène désigné substantialisation permet d’imaginer un environnement épistémologique dans lequel la conception de la vérité littéraire se confond avec des simulacres sensibles de la réalité produits non plus des combinaisons élémentaires ou complexes du discours, mais émergés des formes qu’il peut prendre.

New drugs with the potential to cure hepatitis C have emerged. There is great optimism within medicine about the transformative potential of cure, but this overlooks the entrenched discrimination and stigma associated with both hepatitis C and injecting drug use and the role of law in re/producing it. Drawing on interviews with key stakeholders such as policymakers, lawyers, and representatives from peer organisations (N = 30), Latour's (2013) work on legal veridiction, Fraser and Seear's (2011) conceptualisation of hepatitis C as a 'gathering', and Mol's (2021) work on being, this paper explores the possibility that legal processes complicate the linear trajectory of progress and transformation cure promises. Our participants' identify various legal processes that allow hepatitis C to echo or linger in people's lives after treatment. These processes are remaking hepatitis C, and making perpetual hepatitis C subjects. We argue that we must grapple with these forces in the era of cure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper addresses the effects of the crisis of meaning upon the field of science. The reflections of this article have an epistemological character, in the field of the science of law. Its task is to investigate how the crisis of meaning affects science, making it vulnerable in responding to the enormous challenges of the 21st century. Hence, it highlights the importance of operating the theoretical turn from the status of truth to the status of veridiction (‘véridiction’, Fr.)—following the analysis of semiotic theory, within the Greimasian tradition—to understand scientific discourse as a practice of enunciation. It is from this point of view that the understanding of the science of law (i.e. legal dogmatics) can be revisited given its role as a science of legal meaning. Once its role has been identified, the science of law is analysed, in several aspects, in order to reach a description compatible with its current mission, in a state of dialogue with the other human and social sciences. By revisiting the meaning of the discursive practices of the science of law, one can, after all, approach its new directions, such as objectivity, autonomy, specialisation, heuristics, technical language, interdisciplinarity, technical-cognitive environment, as characteristics that highlight their current understanding.

On 26 April 1986, one of the most important events in the history of nuclear energy took place: the Chernobyl accident. This historic event marked the decline of the Soviet Union, an environmental agenda and new geopolitics of the world. It has been portrayed in literature, film, photo-reportage and documentary, among others. This paper seeks to analyse and contrast the HBO series Chernobyl (2019) and Svetalna Alexievich's Voices from Chernobyl (1997), specifically the relationship between reality and literary and filmic reconstruction. For this purpose, we use a descriptive-argumentative logic and a visual analysis with a mixed methodology. The analysis reveals a conflictive relationship between the two works, since the testimonies recorded in the book are easily recognisable in the series, although the latter has never specified that they are based on the book. Among the conclusions, the narrative structure carrying ideology (which seeks to strengthen a collective imaginary over the commonly accepted biases about the Soviet Union and its model of socialism), carried out with remarkable art direction, stands out. Finally, the series comes at a time of widespread debate in civil society about the use of nuclear energy, just as the end of the current model of fossil fuel-based energy generation for society and heavy industry approaches. Entre 2014 y 2017, El Estado Islámico (Daesh) asesinó a más de 800 personas ante sus cámaras. La mayoría de los asesinados eran sirios e iraquíes de fe musulmana condenados a morir públicamente. De todas estas ejecuciones, más de la mitad contenían referencias a la cultura audiovisual occidental. Sin embargo, el éxito de la producción propagandística de la organización no sólo se reflejó en la popularidad que alcanzaron sus vídeos a escala mundial, sino también en su “eficacia icónica”, ya que a través de ella la organización fue capaz de transformar semánticamente el terrorismo y convertirlo no sólo en algo amenazante, sino también en un producto de consumo masivo que además inspiró a quienes lo consumen a crear nuevos contenidos relacionados con el Estado Islámico. De este modo, el ISIS ha conseguido configurar un eficaz discurso visual en torno a la violencia, capaz de despertar simultáneamente pasiones como el miedo o la fascinación. Entre las principales estrategias utilizadas se encuentran los recursos relacionados con la ficción, así como las técnicas para producir un “efecto de realidad”. También destaca la forma particular de representar la muerte, en la que predomina una “somática del ver morir” sobre una “somática del morir”.

Setting out from the difficulty of translating the Foucauldian notion of aveu, this paper proposes an account of Foucault's concept of confession in the years 1979-1983 surrounding the writing of Confessions of the Flesh. I focus on Foucault's relative failure to bring together the complementary dimensions of confession as confession of sins and confession of faith in early Christianity. Foucault's attempts to tackle this challenge nonetheless reveal a number of crucial aspects of his thought throughout the 1970s, e.g., the critique of the notion of ideology and the role that critique played in the setting of Foucault's "critical philosophy of veridictions". A comparison with the lectures given at Louvain and the Collège de France suggests that Foucault took an original and rather solitary path in Confessions of the Flesh, which may explain the surprises awaiting the reader. Finally, I propose an explanation of Foucault's final shift away from Christian confession towards Greek parrhesia, pointing to the key role of the idea of a "duty of truth". This idea led Foucault to an original approach to confession and the illocutionary force of statements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The 18th century was a time of formal experimentation for French novelists, and among them Pierre Carlet de Marivaux, whose Vie de Marianne, although a major contribution in that context, has rarely beeen recognized as such. In this novel, Marivaux departs from the playfulness he had cultivated in his earlier « antiromans », without abiding by the narrative conventions established at the time to grant vraisemblance to the novel. The question of Marianne's identity – an identity without any possible authentication – serves as a mere pretext for exploring two possible inscriptions of truth in the novel: véridicité and véridiction. Véridicité, by displacing the question of truth from utterance (content) to “speaker” (character), makes veracity, not accurracy, the touchstone of novelistic truth, while véridiction, relocating truthfulness in the very structure of the narrative, dodges the accusations of inherent falsity brandished by the adversaries of the novel. Michel Foucault's last courses and Oswald Ducrot's theory of pre-suppositions will help us to revisit La Vie de Marianne along those lines.

Le présent article offre l’aperçu des documents de communication entre Algirdas Julius Greimas et Juozas Miltinis : notes marginales de Miltinis dans les livres de Greimas, inscriptions de Greimas dans les livres envoyés à Miltinis, lettres et cartes postales. Le lien étroit avec la culture française était ce que les deux créateurs avaient en commun. Beaucoup des auteurs auxquels référait Greimas dans ses travaux faisaient l’objet de l’intérêt de Miltinis. Cela constituait la base de leur dialogue indirect. Dans la Sémantique structurale, Miltinis souligne la thèse méthodologique fondamentale de Greimas: « Le monde humain nous paraît se définir essentiellement comme le monde de la signification ». Dans l’introduction de l’ouvrage Du sens, il prête attention, entre autres, à la conclusion stipulant que le sens n’est pas l’enchaînement linéaire et uniplane des significations, qu’il est aussi une direction, c’est-à-dire une intentionnalité et une finalité. En envoyant à Miltinis son étude sur la nouvelle de Maupassant Deux amis, Greimas l’a caractérisée comme un texte qui parle de Paris, d’amitié, de liberté. Paris et l’amitié constituaient l’axe sémantique de communication entre ces amis indirects. Quant au « texte sur la liberté », c’est une allusion à la biographie politique de Greimas. Dans le deuxième recueil d’essais sémiotiques de Greimas Du sens II, on trouve une dédicace impressionnante : « À J. Miltinis – une étoile à une étoile – A. J. Greimas ». Après la parution du recueil des travaux de Greimas en lithuanien, Miltinis a lu attentivement l’article introductif du rédacteur du livre Rolandas Pavilionis. Outre l’information encyclopédique sur le contexte linguistique et philosophique de Greimas, ce sont les citations des interviews de Greimas dans la presse française et la présentation du « livre probablement le plus philosophique et le plus émotionnel » De l’imperfection qui ont attiré son attention. Dans la correspondance de Greimas et Miltinis, la distance entre le destinateur et le destinataire s’efface. Pour paraphraser Greimas, deux créateurs égaux se sont rencontrés « sous la couverture de l’enveloppe ».

25. Epistolary Enunciation in Contemporary Fiction Films in Asia: A Typological Essay

In Asia, the socio-linguistic history has sometimes made blossom the epistolary enunciation on the screen and has sometimes made it whiter. Melodramas developed the oralised destiny-letters as hinges of dramatic narration. Even a cinema under communist regime like that of North Korea maintains this model but by diverting it to the profit of his supreme epistolarian and leader. Starting from the 1990s, filmmakers like Shunji Iwai and Jeong Jae-eun screen the letters by assigning them a veridiction power in conflict: social/persona. Wong Kar-wai extends the epistolary enunciation to the whole narrative structure of the voices over of his films as memory interiorities. Finally, the transition to digital and virtual communication spaces has led filmmakers like Hideo Nakata and Jia Zhangke to underline the hauntological distance, spectral in Derrida’s sense; distance linked to the power of invisible big communicators which become inevitable thirds at the heart of all exchanges.

26. Did Foucault do Ethics? The 'Ethical Turn,' Neoliberalism, and the Problem of Truth

This paper argues against a common misunderstanding of Foucault's work. Even after the release of his lectures at the Collège de France, which ran throughout the 1970s until his death in 1984, he is still often taken to have made an "ethical" turn toward the end of his life. As opposed to his genealogies of power published in the 1970s, which are relentlessly suspicious of claims of individual agency, his final monographs focus on the ethical self-formation of free individuals. I suggest that this basic misinterpretation makes possible interpretations of Foucault's work as being sympathetic to neoliberal government, by linking the ethical turn to a "liberal" or "neoliberal" turn in his thought. I present a case against the ethical turn by arguing that Foucault's main focus, throughout the 1970s and 1980s, is a concern for the ways in which we become obligated by truth.

27. "Speaking-For" and the Lack of Representation: Advocacy in Hobbes and Rousseau.

- Abstract
The article deals with the complexities and issues of modern advocacy in the political and autobiographical discourses of Thomas Hobbes and Jean-Jacques Rousseau. In his political philosophy, Hobbes speaks on behalf of a multitude which becomes a political body in the course of being represented. He acts as an advocate and a prosecutor at the same time because he conducts a trial in the name of reason against those for whom he speaks, urging them to leave the state of nature. Hobbes imagines a foundational scene in which each and everyone's discourse is reduced to the repetition of a formula that generates the 'civic state.' Rousseau, by contrast, discredits all political speech that presumes to represent [vertreten] the people by speaking in their place and thus silencing them. He establishes advocacy as a specific modality of truth-telling (parrhesia) involving the risk of irritating or offending those who are addressed. He develops a new form of veridiction in which infamous and inglorious, but at the same time singular lives cross the threshold of (political) representation, a process which Hobbes feared as the major reason for political dissolution. Rousseau's discourse is an effort to mobilize future advocates to take the risk of speaking for someone by speaking of themselves: Rousseau in all his singularity presents his contested life to others in such a way that they feel encouraged to speak of themselves in like fashion and, by doing so, to act as his genuine advocates. El estado español ha sido edificado sobre una serie de hitos históricos, de los cuales, al menos dos, ocurrieron bajo el reinado de Isabel I de Castilla (o Isabel la Católica) entre los años 1451 y 1504: nos referimos a la conquista del reino nazarí de Granada y al descubrimiento de América, ambos en 1492. Este reinado, del que queda aún abundante literatura jurídica de la época, así como todo tipo de materiales escritos, ya ha sido retratado por la literatura y,en menor medida,recreado por el cine. Este trabajo busca analizar y contrastar la reconstrucción audiovisual de Isabel de RTVE (2012-2014) y la obra histórica:en concreto abordaremos la relación problemática entre realidad y reconstrucción narrativa visual a partir de Historia de los Reyes Moros de Granada, de Hernando de Baeza, en cuya obra jamás ha reconocido formalmente basarse la ficción. Para ello, utilizamos una lógica descriptiva-argumentativa y un análisis narrativo con metodología mixta. De entre las conclusiones destacamos que la estructura narrativa es portadora de ideología imperial, con aspectos deliberadamente falseados o erróneos, que buscan fortalecer un imaginario colectivo nacional sobre las bondades del reinado y que buscan cierta espectacularización desde lo visual alejándose de lo verosímil., The Spanish state has been built on a series of historical milestones, at least two of which occurred during the reign of Isabella I of Castile (or Isabella the Catholic) between 1451 and 1504: the conquest of the Nasrid kingdom of Granada and the discovery of America, both in 1492. This reign, of which there is still abundant legal literature of the period, as well as all kinds of written materials, has already been portrayed in literature and, to a lesser extent, recreated in film. This paper seeks to analyse and contrast the RTVE series Isabel(2012-2014) and historical works: specifically, we will address the problematic relationship between reality and visual reconstruction of Hernando de Baeza's Historia de los Reyes Moros de Granada, whose work has never been formally acknowledged to be based on the series. To do so, we use a descriptive-argumentative logic and a narrative analysis with a mixed methodology. Among the conclusions, we highlight that the narrative structure is the bearer of imperial ideology, with deliberately false or erroneous aspects, which seek to strengthen a collective national imaginary about the goodness of the reign and which seek a certain spectacularisation from the visual point of view, moving away from the plausible.

In the present article, we will deal with a question concerning the veridictory dimension of discourses, not yet explored in semiotics, in our view: the imbrication (neutralization?) between subjective and objective regimes of veridiction present in the autobiographical discourse. Our discussion will be based on the work Memórias do Cárcere (1953), by Graciliano Ramos, which raises numerous questions about its status as “reality”. This desideratum will take place in dialogue with authors such as Jacques Fontanille, especially in his work Corpo e sentido; Izidoro Blikstein, and his notion of subjective truth; and Wander Melo Miranda, in his work Corpos escritos, dedicated to the theme in the work of Graciliano Ramos under study. The purpose of this article is to show that the veridical peculiarity of the Alagoas writer's text is affirmed not through an objectifying enunciation (more in the order of "record", of adequacy to the facts), but through the aesthetic dimension of his work, through the imbrication between the memorial and the literary and by the figurative force of the sensible and the aesthesia. These elements would put us in the face of a narration more of the becoming of suffering, of someone who “felt in their skin” the pain, than a documentary account of the events lived in prison., No presente artigo, trataremos de uma questão referente à dimensão veridictória dos discursos, ainda a ser mais explorada em semiótica, a nosso ver: a imbricação (neutralização?) entre regimes subjetivos e objetivos de veridicção presente no discurso autobiográfico. Nossa discussão se dará a partir da obra Memórias do Cárcere (1953), de Graciliano Ramos, que traz inúmeras questões sobre o seu estatuto de “realidade”. Esse desiderato se dará em diálogo com autores como Jacques Fontanille, mormente em sua obra Corpo e sentido; Izidoro Blikstein, e sua noção de verdade subjetiva; e Wander Melo Miranda, em seu trabalho Corpos escritos, dedicado à temática na obra de Graciliano Ramos em estudo. O intento deste artigo é o de mostrar que a peculiaridade veridictória do texto do escritor alagoano é afirmada não pela via de uma enunciação objetivante (mais da ordem do “registro”, da adequação aos fatos), mas pela dimensão estética de sua obra, pela imbricação entre o memorial e o literário e pela força figurativa do sensível e da estesia. Esses elementos nos poriam em face de uma narração mais do devir de um sofrimento, do simulacro de quem “sentiu na pele” a dor, do que de um relato documental dos acontecimentos vividos na cadeia.

The aim of the article is to clarify key concepts of the late thought of Michel Foucault who works with them in his lectures at the Collège de France between the years 1980–1984. On the one hand, the concepts of veridiction, alethurgy, and parrhēsia form a part of Foucault’s interest in the study of relationship between subjectivity and truth. On the other hand, these concepts create a new field of questioning that pushes Foucault from the history of subjectivity to the history of the games of truth and untruth in Western thinking and to the critical hermeneutics of ourselves.

La méconnaissance du virus SARS-CoV-2 et une communication publique déficiente ont contribué à alimenter l’incertitude radicale depuis le début de la pandémie. Cette conjoncture est propice au déferlement de contre-discours dits « complotistes » dans les arènes numériques, théorisées ici en tant que « forums hybrides » (Callon, Lascoumes et Barthe, 2001). Les institutions publiques et médiatiques, en ostracisant ce contre-public et en privilégiant une approche épistémologique qui consiste à débusquer les informations problématiques qui circulent, échouent à comprendre la préférence d’une frange somme toute assez importante de la population pour les vérités dites « alternatives », relayées par des leaders éloquents et persuasifs, au détriment des preuves scientifiques. Alexis Cossette-Trudel, figure de proue du mouvement complotiste au Québec et en Europe francophone, propage sa « réinformation » sur les réseaux sociaux depuis 2017 et prétend dire vrai. D’abord peu populaire, la pandémie de COVID-19 l’a propulsé au « sommet ». Il est devenu le maître à penser de milliers de gens fâchés; des personnes qui le croient et qui se méfient des discours officiels, mettant ainsi la santé publique en péril. On est alors à même de se demander comment il y parvient. En analysant les formes médiatiques et alèthurgiques de son discours (à partir des modes de véridiction de Michel Foucault), l’intuition qui est explorée dans ce mémoire – et qui tend à se confirmer – est que le contexte d’incertitude pandémique offre à Cossette-Trudel les conditions de possibilité et de médialité qui, étroitement interreliées, lui permettent de poser et maintenir son ascendant au sein de son forum hybride ad hoc, témoignant du retour d’une (mauvaise) parrêsia politique., The lack of knowledge about the SARS-CoV-2 virus and poor public communication have contributed to the radical uncertainty that has existed since the beginning of the pandemic. This situation is favorable to the outpouring of so-called conspiracy counter-discourses in digital arenas, theorized here as “hybrid forums” (Callon, Lascoumes and Barthe, 2001). Public and media institutions, by ostracizing this counter-public and by privileging an epistemological approach that consists of debunking problematic information that circulates, fail to understand the preference of a rather large fringe of the population for so-called “alternative” truths, relayed by eloquent and persuasive leaders, to the detriment of scientific evidence. Alexis Cossette-Trudel, a leading figure in the conspiracy movement in Quebec and French-speaking Europe, has been spreading his “reinformation” on social networks since 2017 and claims to be telling the truth. Initially not very popular, the COVID-19 pandemic has propelled him to the “top”. He has become the thought leader for thousands of angry people; people who believe him and distrust the official discourse, thus putting public health at risk. We can then ask ourselves how he achieves this. By analyzing the media and alethurgic forms of his discourse (based on Michel Foucault's modes of veridiction), the intuition that is explored in this memoir – and which tends to be confirmed – is that the context of pandemic uncertainty offers Cossette-Trudel the conditions of possibility and mediality which, closely interrelated, allow him to establish and maintain his ascendancy within his ad hoc hybrid forum, testifying to the return of a (bad) political parrêsia.

Modalities are fundamental in building, maintaining and contesting ideological systems. While modalities have been described as resources for constructing both representational and interpersonal aspects of reality and truth, the analytical focus has been on modalities as a relationship between authors, their texts and their audiences, i.e. on their interpersonal functions. Informed by a framework on modalities for discourse analyses of values, Hodge and Kress's theory on ideological complexes and Fairclough's three-dimensional conception of discourse, in this paper I develop a method for examining modalities as resources for building dominant and counter discourses. I use example excerpts that come from my research on Finnish equality discourses to build and demonstrate the method. The example texts were written by people who are differently positioned in relation to salient norms and institutions on gender/sex and sociability: people contacted through a national random sample, people diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, and people with transgender experiences. The method allows not only for systematic examinations of how modalities function in ordering power-imbalanced interpersonal relations but also attends to an underexplored dimension dealing with how modalities work in ideological representation. In this essay, we analyse the regimes of truth and the forms of culinary camouflage inscribed in some signature dishes by several well-known Italian chefs, whose work is emblematic of the various fictional trends in gastronomy. In doing so, we will keep in mind the so-called semiotic square of veridiction that discursive semiotics has been proposing and using for some time. The analysis reveals how the gastronomic discourse of the Italian haute cousine produces effects of illusion, secrecy, falsehood and truth. The concurrence of these veridiction modes allows for an explicit model which accounts for the various styles of camouflage and thus describes current tendencies in contemporary cuisine.

The founder of the modern theater of the 20th century, Konstantin Stanislavsky, and his student Evgeny Vakhtangov, in rehearsals and in performances, implemented the principle: “as in life”. They believed that an actor should be on stage like a child. The latter, dropping the doll, may treat it like a wounded soldier and bandage it quite seriously. So, the actor must relate to untruth (the space of the stage). He must treat this “as if it were truth, that is, turn lies into truth” (VAKHTANGOV, 1918). We propose to consider examples of “truth theater” (school of experiencing, school of representation) through semiotic categories (veridictory modalities, engagement/disengagement), as well as through the prism of Lotman's semiotics of culture, and also ask the question what the truth on the theater stage is today.

43. From a Cockroach’s Point of View: The Metamorphosis of Perception in Kafka.

The article offers a reading of the famous tale by Kafka focused on the consequences triggered by the sudden transformation of Gregor Samsa into an insect. This event constitutes the starting point of a shift that involves phases and components of perception both of the self and of the world as well as the relations among the inner and the external world, the most elementary awareness and feelings and the most complex ones, which are affective, cognitive and related to interactions, expressed with particular emphasis by the dynamics of the spatial dimension of the story. Two discursive paths intersect above all: on one side, the traveling salesman wakes up with the/in the body of cockroach while his soul is the same as always. He will have to try to become cockroach, that is to assume its perceptions and then, slowly, its tastes, its impressions and any other animal sentiment. At the same time, the becoming of Gregorio’s family will be antiphrastic to the one experienced by him: from inept, passive parasites of their akin, as they are depicted at the beginning of the story, his family members will gradually turn into active bourgeoisies full of projects, rejecting Gregory up to eliminate him: they are the ones dehumanizing themselves, while Gregory refines his sensitivity in suffering, even to the sacrifice. El 26 de abril de 1986 se produjo uno de los sucesos más importantes de la historia de la energía nuclear: el accidente de Chernóbil. Este acontecimiento histórico marcó el declive de la Unión Soviética, una agenda ambientalista y una nueva geopolítica del mundo. Ha sido retratado por la literatura, el cine, el fotorreportaje y el documental, entre otros. Este trabajo busca analizar y contrastar la serie Chernobyl de HBO (2019) y la obra Voces de Chernóbil de Svetalna Alexiévich (1997), en concreto la relación entre realidad y reconstrucción periodístico-literaria y fílmica. Para ello, utilizamos una lógica descriptiva-argumentativa y un análisis visual con metodología mixta. En el análisis se evidencia una relación conflictiva entre ambas obras, ya que los testimonios consignados en el libro son fácilmente reconocibles en la serie, sin que ésta haya especificado nunca basarse en el libro. De entre las conclusiones destaca la estructura narrativa portadora de ideología (que buscan fortalecer un imaginario colectivo sobre las parcialidades comúnmente aceptadas sobre la Unión Soviética y su modelo de socialismo) llevada a cabo con una notable dirección de arte. Por último, la serie (marcadamente antinuclear) llega en un momento de amplio debate en la sociedad civil sobre el uso de la energía atómica, justo cuando se aproxima el fin del modelo actual de generación energética basado en combustible fósil para la sociedad y la industria pesada., On 26 April 1986, one of the most important events in the history of nuclear energy took place: the Chernobyl accident. This historic event marked the decline of the Soviet Union, an environmental agenda and new geopolitics of the world. It has been portrayed in literature, film, photo-reportage and documentary, among others. This paper seeks to analyse and contrast the HBO series Chernobyl (2019) and Svetalna Alexievich’s Voices from Chernobyl (1997), specifically the relationship between reality and literary and filmic reconstruction. For this purpose, we use a descriptive-argumentative logic and a visual analysis with a mixed methodology. The analysis reveals a conflictive relationship between the two works, since the testimonies recorded in the book are easily recognisable in the series, although the latter has never specified that they are based on the book. Among the conclusions, the narrative structure carrying ideology (which seeks to strengthen a collective imaginary over the commonly accepted biases about the Soviet Union and its model of socialism), carried out with remarkable art direction, stands out. Finally, the series comes at a time of widespread debate in civil society about the use of nuclear energy, just as the end of the current model of fossil fuel-based energy generation for society and heavy industry approaches.

The article intends to reach some philosophical outcomes that can be extracted from the interpretationsof the German philosophers J. G. Hamann and F. Nietzsche related to the figure of Socrates. Both paidattention to the problem of knowledge and the place of reason in Socratic philosophy, noting that his way ofthinking fostered relevant cultural reform programs. Although both their attitude towards the Greek andassessments are different, for both authors thinks in the ancient philosopher allowed them to outline acritical insight to their own time, and to performs the idea of philosopher from which they work, El artículo se propone examinar los rendimientos filosóficos a que pueden dar lugar las interpretaciones que realizan los filósofos alemanes J. G. Hamann y F. Nietzsche con relación a la figura de Sócrates. Ambas propuestas atienden al problema del conocimiento y al lugar de la razón en la filosofía socrática, advirtiendo que este modo de pensamiento alienta importantes programas de reformas culturales. Si bien en ambos casos la actitud frente al griego y su valoración es diferente, se sostiene que para los autores el reflexionar en torno al filósofo antiguo posibilita esbozar una crítica a su tiempo y moldear la figura del filósofo alrededor de la cual ambos enmarcan su producción intelectual.

Foucault’s reception of Nietzschean philosophy is still fertile ground for multiple explorations. Indeed, inObrar mal, decir la verdad, Foucault points out that any phenomenon of veridiction, understood as an actof telling the truth, would have its equivalent in what Nietzsche would have thought of as ’Wahrsagen’.However, the term pointed out by Foucault does not appear anywhere in the Nietzschean corpus, and yetseveral specialists have mentioned that Nietzsche’s Wahrsagen is taken by Foucault as veridiction. Giventhis, we intend to explain the relationship between one term and another, attending, on the one hand, to areconstruction of the phenomenon of veridiction in Foucauldian work, and, on the other, to the notes thatNietzsche assigns to the figure of the fortune teller. inThus Spoke Zarathustra. The purpose of this researchwill be to make explicit that this relationship shows as intrinsic characteristics of all veridiction both theneed for it to enable a projective horizon for the subjectivities involved in it, as well as the null relationshipthat telling the truth itself has with reality from and in front of which it arises, La recepción de la filosofía nietzscheana por parte de Foucault sigue aún siendo terreno fértil para múltiples exploraciones. En efecto, en Obrar mal, decir la verdad, Foucault señala que todo fenómeno de veridicción, entendido como un acto de decir la verdad, tendría su equivalente en lo que Nietzsche habría pensado como ‘Wahrsagen’. No obstante, el término señalado por Foucault no aparece en ninguna parte del corpus nietzscheano, y, sin embargo, varios especialistas han mencionado que el Wahrsagen de Nietzsche es tomado por Foucault como veridicción. Ante esto, nos proponemos explicitar la relación entre un término y otro, atendiendo, por un lado, a una reconstrucción del fenómeno de la veridicción en la obra foucaultiana, y, por otro, a las notas que Nietzsche le asigna a la figura del adivino en Así habló Zaratustra. El propósito de esta investigación será explicitar que dicha relación muestra como características intrínsecas de toda veridicción tanto la necesidad de que esta habilite un horizonte proyectivo para las subjetividades involucradas en ella, como también la nula relación que el decir veraz mismo guarda con la realidad desde y frente a la que surge.

47. Língua, gênero e diversidade: o que tem a semiótica a ver com isso?

- Abstract
In this work, we aim to demonstrate how sexist discourses and discourses about language are built to perpetuate gender prejudices, as race and class, as anti-scientific discourse is used to establish language normatized by grammars and dictionaries as the only correct and acceptable, and sexist and intolerant linguistic performances perpetuate forms of violence against the female body (cis women and LGBTQIA+ gender identities), and their consequent social exclusion. Using the theoretical-methodological aim of the discursive semiotics, we verify the figurative and veridictory construction of our corpus, revealing values such as the denial of the transformations of/in language in use in a journalistic article published in Veja magazine in 2001, in Ordinance No. 604/21, of the Ministry of Tourism, and in Draft Law No. 948/21, legislative devices that veto the use of neutral language in the Brazilian public sphere. As we explain how sexist language inflicts on exclusion and symbolic violence to the population that is not exclusively male, we simultaneously analyze the Manual para o uso não sexista da linguagem (2014), published by the Government of Rio Grande do Sul. As a result, we present what it is and how the Portuguese speaker can use non-sexist language and neutral language in different situations of social interaction., Neste trabalho, objetivamos demostrar como discursos sexistas e sobre a língua são construídos para perpetuar preconceitos de gênero, raça e classe, à medida que o discurso anticientífico é usado para estabelecer a língua normatizada por gramáticas e dicionários como a única correta e aceitável, e performances linguísticas sexistas e intolerantes perpetuam formas de violência contra o corpo feminino (mulheres cis e identidades de gênero LGBTQIA+), e sua consequente exclusão social. Utilizando a visada teórico-metodológica da semiótica discursiva, verificamos a construção figurativa e veridictória do nosso córpus, revelando valores como a negação das transformações da/na língua em uso em artigo jornalístico veiculado na revista Veja em 2001, na Portaria nº 604/21, do Ministério do Turismo, e no Projeto de Lei 948/21, dispositivos legislativos que vetam o uso de linguagem neutra na esfera pública brasileira. Conforme explicitamos como a linguagem sexista inflige a exclusão e violências simbólicas à população que não é exclusivamente masculina, simultaneamente, analisamos o Manual para o uso não sexista da linguagem (2014), publicado pelo Governo do Rio Grande do Sul. Como resultado, apresentamos o que é e como o falante do português pode usar a linguagem não sexista e a linguagem neutra em diferentes situações de interação social.

48. El pacto de veridicción en la serie Chernobyl. La verdad y la mentira histórica desde lo fílmico

- Abstract
On 26 April 1986, one of the most important events in the history of nuclear energy took place: the Chernobyl accident. This historic event marked the decline of the Soviet Union, an environmental agenda and new geopolitics of the world. It has been portrayed in literature, film, photo-reportage and documentary, among others. This paper seeks to analyse and contrast the HBO series Chernobyl (2019) and Svetalna Alexievich's Voices from Chernobyl (1997), specifically the relationship between reality and literary and filmic reconstruction. For this purpose, we use a descriptive-argumentative logic and a visual analysis with a mixed methodology. The analysis reveals a conflictive relationship between the two works, since the testimonies recorded in the book are easily recognisable in the series, although the latter has never specified that they are based on the book. Among the conclusions, the narrative structure carrying ideology (which seeks to strengthen a collective imaginary over the commonly accepted biases about the Soviet Union and its model of socialism), carried out with remarkable art direction, stands out. Finally, the series comes at a time of widespread debate in civil society about the use of nuclear energy, just as the end of the current model of fossil fuel-based energy generation for society and heavy industry approaches., El 26 de abril de 1986 se produjo uno de los sucesos más importantes de la historia de la energía nuclear: el accidente de Chernóbil. Este acontecimiento histórico marcó el declive de la Unión Soviética, una agenda ambientalista y una nueva geopolítica del mundo. Ha sido retratado por la literatura, el cine, el fotorreportaje y el documental, entre otros. Este trabajo busca analizar y contrastar la serie Chernobyl de HBO (2019) y la obra Voces de Chernóbil de Svetalna Alexiévich (1997), en concreto la relación entre realidad y reconstrucción periodístico-literaria y fílmica. Para ello, utilizamos una lógica descriptiva-argumentativa y un análisis visual con metodología mixta. En el análisis se evidencia una relación conflictiva entre ambas obras, ya que los testimonios consignados en el libro son fácilmente reconocibles en la serie, sin que ésta haya especificado nunca basarse en el libro. De entre las conclusiones destaca la estructura narrativa portadora de ideología (que buscan fortalecer un imaginario colectivo sobre las parcialidades comúnmente aceptadas sobre la Unión Soviética y su modelo de socialismo) llevada a cabo con una notable dirección de arte. Por último, la serie (marcadamente antinuclear) llega en un momento de amplio debate en la sociedad civil sobre el uso de la energía atómica, justo cuando se aproxima el fin del modelo actual de generación energética basado en combustible fósil para la sociedad y la industria pesada.

49. Semiótica e política: um estudo de caso

The functioning of political discourse goes beyond enunciative textualization strategies or the narratives that institute relations between subjects and objects and the modal structures that constitute them. Politics defines a way of being in the world, articulates interpersonal relations, organizes social life, and installs itself as a way of life. To understand it semiotically, it will be necessary to perceive the axiological systems and the relations of belief, identification and trust among the social actors, mediated by emotional and intellectual factors. This article takes politics in its sense of exercise of power, relationship between rulers and ruled, and legitimation of that power, with the aim of analyzing the electoral victory of the far-right in Brazil in the 2018 presidential elections, based on some campaign images. Through concepts such as those of veridiction, persuasion and figurativization and the mobilization of analysis categories of plastic semiotics, campaign strategies are examined, and the actors involved in the electoral process are semiotically defined., O funcionamento do discurso político vai além de estratégias enunciativas de textualização ou das narrativas que instituem as relações entre sujeitos e objetos e as estruturas modais que as constituem. A política define um modo de ser e de estar no mundo, articula as relações interpessoais, organiza a vida social, instala-se como forma de vida. Será necessário, para compreendê-la semioticamente, perceber os sistemas axiológicos e as relações de crença, identificação e confiança entre os atores sociais, mediadas por fatores emocionais e intelectuais. Este artigo toma a política em seu sentido de exercício do poder, relação entre governantes e governados e legitimação desse poder, com o objetivo de analisar a vitória eleitoral da extrema-direita no Brasil, nas eleições presidenciais de 2018, com base em algumas imagens de campanha. Por meio de conceitos como os de veridicção, persuasão e figurativização e da mobilização de categorias de análise da semiótica plástica, examinam-se estratégias de campanha e definem-se semioticamente os atores envolvidos no processo eleitoral.

50. As metamorfoses da verdade, entre sentido e interação

- Abstract
Since the very beginning, Greimas’s semiotics distanced itself from both formal logic and the philosophical tradition, in particular by abstaining to contemplate any ontological problem about truth as such, and focusing instead on the intersubjective and cognitive processes of making believe true. Later on, in its continuation, sociosemiotics, distancing itself, in its turn, from the postulates of standard semiotics, made a step further by denying the primacy of the cognitive dimension and stressing the role of the sensitive factor in communication and interaction, especially in the political field. This led to admitting that alongside citizens who trust preferably in forms of truth founded on proof or negociation, an important minority confides rather in forms of supposedly revealed truth, or forms of certainty which proceed from feeling. In order to account for this diversity, we postulate that each of these regimes of truth finds its source, its coherence and its meaning in the framework of a specific interactional regime that comprises and rules it. The purpose of this article is to outline the principles that determine such correspondences., Ao se abster de levantar qualquer problema de ordem ontológica a respeito da Verdade, a semiótica de Greimas se afastou da lógica dos lógicos e da tradição filosófica, focalizando a atenção, desde a origem, sobre os processos intersubjetivos e cognitivos do fazer crer verdadeiro. Mais recentemente, a sociossemiótica, distanciando-se, por sua vez, dos postulados da semiótica standard, efetuou um outro passo adiante: acabou com o domínio exclusivo da dimensão cognitiva e destacou a importância do fator sensível, especialmente no âmbito da política. Isso conduziu a admitir que, ao lado dos cidadãos que concordam (ou se opõem) por convicção, baseando-se em “verdades” provadas ou negociadas, uma minoria importante acredita por contágio, confiando em formas de “verdade” revelada ou experimentada. Para dar conta dessa diversidade das dinâmicas de adesão política e compreender as distintas concepções da “verdade”, nós postulamos que cada um dos regimes veridictórios em pauta encontra sua base, sua coerência e seu sentido no quadro de um determinado regime interacional que o engloba e o rege. O objetivo do artigo é evidenciar a lógica destas correspondências.
