Introduction: As ecological disasters loom, forests play a crucial role in mitigating climate change and aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This study aims to systematically examine the contribution of forestry science research to the SDGs through a multidisciplinary perspective, highlighting its role in advancing global sustainability efforts. Methods: Utilizing the PRISMA protocol, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of 39,841 publications since 2015, focusing on the intersection of forestry sciences with the SDGs. Network and keyword co-occurrence analyses were performed to identify thematic clusters and interdisciplinary linkages among SDGs. Results: Our findings indicate a significant focus on SDG 15 (Life on Land) and SDG 13 (Climate Action), emphasizing the forestry sector's contributions to biodiversity conservation, climate change mitigation, and ecosystem services. The analyses revealed thematic clusters centered around ecological sustainability, sustainable energy, and social development, demonstrating the diverse ways in which forestry research supports the SDGs. Discussion: This study highlights the interdisciplinary nature of forestry sciences and identifies key areas of contribution while pointing to potential research gaps. Future research should explore advanced technologies such as AI-driven analytics and remote sensing, socioeconomic impacts of forest-based livelihoods, and innovative reforestation techniques. Strengthening urban forestry, enhancing interdisciplinary cooperation, and improving governance are recommended to ensure continued contributions of forestry sciences to global sustainability and the SDGs. This study proposes a method to analyze urban greenery perceived from street-level viewpoints by combining geographic information systems (GIS) with image segmentation. GIS was utilized for a geospatial statistical analysis to examine anisotropy in the distribution of urban greenery and to spatialize image segmentation data. The result was the Visual Greenery Field (VGF) model, which offers a vector-based representation of greenery visibility and directionality in urban environments. The analysis employed street view images from selected geographic locations to calculate a Green View Index (GVI) and derive visual vectors. Validation confirmed the reliability of the methods, as evidenced by solid correlations between automatic and manual segmentations. The findings indicated that greenery visibility varies across the cardinal directions, highlighting that the GVI's average value may obscure significant differences in greenery's distribution. The VGF model complements the GVI by revealing directional coherence in urban greenery experiences. This study emphasizes that while the GVI provides an overall assessment, integrating the VGF model enriches the understanding of perceptions of urban greenery by capturing its complexities and nuances. Precipitation channelled down tree stems (stemflow) or into drip points of 'throughfall' beneath trees results in spatially concentrated inputs of water and chemicals to the ground. Currently, these flows are poorly characterised due to uncertainties about which branches redirect rainfall to stemflow or throughfall drip points.We introduce a graph theoretic algorithm that 'prunes' quantitative structural models of trees (derived from terrestrial LiDAR) to identify branches contributing to stemflow and those contributing to throughfall drip points. To demonstrate the method's utility, we analysed two trees with similar canopy sizes but contrasting canopy architecture and rainfall partitioning behaviours.For both trees, the branch 'watershed' area contributing to stemflow (under conditions assumed to represent moderate precipitation intensity) was found to be only half of the total ground area covered by the canopy. The study also revealed significant variations between trees in the number and median contribution areas of modelled throughfall drip points (69 vs. 94 drip points tree−1, with contributing projected areas of 28.6 vs. 7.8 m2 tree−1, respectively). Branch diameter, surface area, volumes and woody area index of components contributing to stemflow and throughfall drip points may play a role in the trees' differing rainfall partitioning behaviours.Our pruning algorithm, enabled by the proliferation of LiDAR observations of canopy structure, promises to enhance studies of canopy hydrology. Abstract\nNOVELTY STATEMENTModern era has witnessed particulate matter (PM) become one of the biggest threats for the existence of biological species. Therefore, a study was performed in Faisalabad city to evaluate PM retention and removal efficiency of ten local tree species. Branch samples were collected from urban, sub-urban and rural areas in September 2020 (183 days after rain), and in August 2021 (30 days after rain). Results showed that total PM load, PM>10 and PM10-2.5 retention was the highest in urban followed by sub-urban and rural area. PM>10, PM10-2.5, total PM, and PM deposition rate decreased significantly in the following order, F. benghalensis > T. arjuna > S. cumini > A. scholaris > F. religiosa > E. camaldulensis > D sissoo > C lancifolius > B. ceiba > M. alba during both years 2020, and 2021. During the artificial rainfall experiment, total PM removed by the species also followed the same order however, PM removal efficiency was the highest in B. ceiba and M. alba followed by E. camaldulensis, C. lancifolius, D. sissoo, T. arjuna, S. cumini, A. scholaris, F. religiosa and F. benghalensis. Therefore, it can be concluded that species selection must be done skillfully for congested urban environment.Owing to excessive industrialization and motorization, optimizing particulate matter (PM) removal from the atmosphere has become imperative. Since, trees can help in controlling the atmospheric PM therefore, current study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of ten tree species in controlling the atmospheric PM. These species belong to arid and semi-arid regions have not been characterized for the efficiency in removing PM from the atmosphere. Understanding the relationship between various socioeconomic factors and urban forest structure is essential for directing resources to ensure equitable distribution of green space. Through a case study of a desert city, i.e., Phoenix, AZ, this study provides a novel application of Multiscale Geographically Weighted Regression (MGWR) in which we explore the spatially variable relationships between a wide array of socioeconomic indicators and urban forest attributes. Through the computation of various scales of influence for different explanatory variables, MGWR enhances our analysis's precision and stresses the association between socioeconomic status and urban forest structure at local and regional scales. Our results indicate that although there has been a pattern of green inequality where minority and low-income communities have less access to urban forests, education levels were mostly insignificant based on the MGWR results. In some instances, higher incomes are negatively correlated with tree canopy coverage. Additionally, the stem density model outperformed the canopy coverage model in terms of prediction accuracy. This research adds a new dimension to urban forestry literature and emphasizes the value of customized urban planning strategies and the environmental justice implications of urban forestry, particularly in arid environments. The aim of this study is to explore the relationships and perspectives of stakeholders involved in the stewardship of 'urban green infrastructure' in England. We used stewardship of the urban forest network (trees and associated green space) as a focal point by referring to four meanings of 'Stewardship', i.e. Motivation, Ethic, Outcome and Action proposed by Peçanha Enqvist et al. (2018). We studied the perspectives of stakeholders through a multi-regional approach, in five English cities (Newcastle/Gateshead, Leeds, Sheffield, Coventry and Bristol), assessing their views expressed via questionnaire and analysing responses through NVivo. We found support for stewardship as a key aspect of urban green infrastructure planning, one that encourages 'bottom up' participation. In the specific area of urban forestry in England we propose that to ensure a co-stewardship role, planning professionals and citizens should work together at all levels to identify key roles and stewardship niches that are complementary. This research aimed to evaluate the efficiency of composting waste from urban and agro-industrial forestry pruning in the broiler production chain (BPC), using PCA multivariate statistics and FTIR spectroscopic analysis. Three composting windrows were assembled, weighing 419 kg (dry matter) with an initial C/N ratio of 22.2. Organic materials such as pruning residues from urban afforestation, cellulosic sausage casing, hatchery residue, floater sludge, and agro-industrial broiler ash composed the windrows. The evaluated treatments were S35: 35 days, S63: 63 days, and S95: 95 days of stabilization. Physicochemical parameters, FTIR, and absorbance index assessed the process. These values were submitted to PCA multivariate statistics to select two PC, capable of explaining 90.2% of the data. PC1 divided the parameters into two groups exhibiting the residues stabilization characteristics at 35, 63, and 95 days of composting. The FTIR displayed an increase in the 1650/2925 and 1650/2845 ratios and a decrease in the 2920/1640 ratio for all treatments as compared to its initial composition. An outcome reflects the degradation of aliphatic groups and increase of aromatic structures as the composting time progresses. The PCA allowed the evaluation of physicochemical parameters and the degree of stabilization of the residues in the composting process. The objective of this study is the development of crown width–tree height (CW-H) models in cities in northeastern Greece, for better urban vegetation management. In the cities of Kavala, Xanthi, Komotini, Alexadroupolis, and Orestiada, in total, 700 trees of Magnolia grandiflora L., Prunus cerasifera Ehrh., and Acer negundo L. were selected. For each selected tree, the total height as well as the minimum and maximum crown diameter were measured, and the average of the minimum and maximum diameter was considered the crown width. The selected CW-H models exhibit satisfactory R2 values of 0.60 and above. There is not a common pattern in the value order (or rank) of R2 among the M. grandiflora, P. cerasifera, and A. negundo CW-H models in the studied cities. A medium-sized tree such as M. grandiflora, a small-medium sized tree such as A. negundo, and a shrub or small tree such as P. cerasifera did not exhibit substantial differences in estimated and observed crown widths. The results of this study will increase our understanding of CW-H allometries. The main use of these models will be in the selection of the proper above-ground spacing of tree lines and in the spatial planning of a tree's establishment so that no problems arise from its proximity to infrastructure. Juglans regia L. is an edible fruit tree cultivated worldwide for its fruits and wood and as an urban tree. Globally, there is growing concern for preserving the genetic diversity of trees with high economic and ecological value. This study investigates the genetic diversity of J. regia in urban landscapes and assesses the quality of its walnut kernels as a local food product. An inventory of 150 trees from five populations in public green spaces in Lugoj, Caransebeș and Jupa, as well as two semi-natural hilly ecosystems in the Banat Region, was conducted. Molecular analyses showed that Directed Amplification of Minisatellite-region DNA (DAMD) markers were more effective than Start Codon Targeted (SCoT) markers, with a higher average polymorphism of 56.26%, compared to 49.44%. DAMD07 achieved 100% polymorphism and DAMD05 showed a strong balance between P.I.C. (0.35) and polymorphism (54.54%). Chemical analysis revealed the following contents in walnut kernels: protein (12.81% to 16.80%), lipids (60.39% to 69.08%), total polyphenols (5484.66 to 10,788.4 mg GAE/kg), copper (3.655 to 8.532 mg/kg), manganese (14.408 to 28.618 mg/kg), zinc (19.813 to 46.583 mg/kg), lead (1.204 to 2.27 mg/kg) and cadmium (0.03451 to 0.08065 mg/kg). Background: Urgent solutions are needed in cities to mitigate twin crises of global climate change and biodiversity loss. Urban nature-based solutions (actions that protect, sustainably manage, and restore ecosystems while simultaneously providing human wellbeing and biodiversity benefits) are being advocated for as multi-functional tools capable of tackling these societal challenges. Urban forest management is a proposed nature-based solution with potential to address both climate change mitigation and biodiversity loss along with multiple other benefits. However, bodies of evidence measuring multiple outcomes (e.g., biodiversity conservation and nature-based climate solutions) remain siloed which limits conservation and management opportunities. In this article, we present a systematic map of the literature on urban forest management strategies that measure both biodiversity goals (through avian conservation) and climate change mitigation goals (through carbon storage and sequestration). Methods: Following a published protocol, we searched for evidence related to urban forest management strategies for (1) avian conservation and (2) carbon solutions within the global temperate region in academic and grey literature. In addition to Scopus, ProQuest and Web of Science Core Collection, we searched 21 specialist websites. We screened English language documents using predefined inclusion criteria on titles and abstracts, and then full texts. All qualifying literature items were coded, and metadata were extracted. No study validity appraisal was conducted. We identified knowledge clusters and gaps related to forest management strategies for both topics. Review findings: Our searches identified 19,073 articles published, of which 5445 were duplicates. The title and abstract screening removed a further 11,019 articles. After full-text screening (1762 and 1406), a total of 277 avian and 169 forest carbon literature items met the eligibility criteria and were included in the final database. We found a large knowledge base for broad-scale avian metrics: abundance, species richness. We similarly found that both avian and carbon solutions most often used broad-scale forest management components: land use type, composition, and forested area and least often considered fragmentation, connectivity, and diversity metrics (abundance, richness). The most understudied avian metrics were foraging, resources, and survival while the most understudied carbon solutions metrics were soil carbon, dead wood and organic matter and infrastructure. Avian literature most often used an experimental design (56% with comparator, 44% no comparator) while forest carbon solutions literature was dominated by observational studies (86%). In both topics, studies most often occurred over short timelines between 0 and 1 and 2–5 years. The body of evidence for both avian and carbon outcomes present a scale-mismatch between the scale of forest management strategy (e.g., land use type) and scale of application (e.g., patch). For example, the majority of studies considered forest strategies at broad scales, like land use type or composition, yet were conducted at a patch or multi-patch scale. Our systematic map also highlights that multi-city and regional urban scales are underrepresented in both carbon solutions and avian conservation and will require additional research efforts. Finally, we highlight gaps in the inclusion of recommendations in both bodies of literature. Roughly 30% of articles in each topic's database did not include recommendations for practitioners or researchers. Conclusions: Our systematic map provides a database and identifies knowledge gaps and clusters of urban forest management strategies for (1) avian conservation and (2) carbon solutions. Overall, our map will allow researchers to fill existing gaps in literature through new research investigations, meta-analyses or systematic reviews while also pointing policymakers toward strong knowledge bases in addition to understudied or mismatched areas that require more funding. The prompt acquisition of precise land cover categorization data is indispensable for the strategic development of contemporary farming practices, especially within the realm of forestry oversight and preservation. Forests are complex ecosystems that require precise monitoring to assess their health, biodiversity, and response to environmental changes. The existing methods for classifying remotely sensed imagery often encounter challenges due to the intricate spacing of feature classes, intraclass diversity, and interclass similarity, which can lead to weak perceptual ability, insufficient feature expression, and a lack of distinction when classifying forested areas at various scales. In this study, we introduce the DASR-Net algorithm, which integrates a dual attention network (DAN) in parallel with the Residual Network (ResNet) to enhance land cover classification, specifically focusing on improving the classification of forested regions. The dual attention mechanism within DASR-Net is designed to address the complexities inherent in forested landscapes by effectively capturing multiscale semantic information. This is achieved through multiscale null attention, which allows for the detailed examination of forest structures across different scales, and channel attention, which assigns weights to each channel to enhance feature expression using an improved BSE-ResNet bilinear approach. The two-channel parallel architecture of DASR-Net is particularly adept at resolving structural differences within forested areas, thereby avoiding information loss and the excessive fusion of features that can occur with traditional methods. This results in a more discriminative classification of remote sensing imagery, which is essential for accurate forest monitoring and management. To assess the efficacy of DASR-Net, we carried out tests with 10m Sentinel-2 multispectral remote sensing images over the Heshan District, which is renowned for its varied forestry. The findings reveal that the DASR-Net algorithm attains an accuracy rate of 96.36%, outperforming classical neural network models and the transformer (ViT) model. This demonstrates the scientific robustness and promise of the DASR-Net model in assisting with automatic object recognition for precise forest classification. Furthermore, we emphasize the relevance of our proposed model to hyperspectral datasets, which are frequently utilized in agricultural and forest classification tasks. DASR-Net's enhanced feature extraction and classification capabilities are particularly advantageous for hyperspectral data, where the rich spectral information can be effectively harnessed to differentiate between various forest types and conditions. By doing so, DASR-Net contributes to advancing remote sensing applications in forest monitoring, supporting sustainable forestry practices and environmental conservation efforts. The findings of this study have significant practical implications for urban forestry management. The DASR-Net algorithm can enhance the accuracy of forest cover classification, aiding urban planners in better understanding and monitoring the status of urban forests. The 3D reconstruction of point cloud trees and the acquisition of stand factors are key to supporting forestry regulation and urban planning. However, the two are usually independent modules in existing studies. In this work, we extended the AdTree method for 3D modeling of trees by adding a quantitative analysis capability to acquire stand factors. We used unmanned aircraft LiDAR (ALS) data as the raw data for this study. After denoising the data and segmenting the single trees, we obtained the single-tree samples needed for this study and produced our own single-tree sample dataset. The scanned tree point cloud was reconstructed in three dimensions in terms of geometry and topology, and important stand parameters in forestry were extracted. This improvement in the quantification of model parameters significantly improves the utility of the original point cloud tree reconstruction algorithm and increases its ability for quantitative analysis. The tree parameters obtained by this improved model were validated on 82 camphor pine trees sampled from the Northeast Forestry University forest. In a controlled experiment with the same field-measured parameters, the root mean square errors (RMSEs) and coefficients of determination (R2s) for diameters at breast height (DBHs) and crown widths (CWs) were 4.1 cm and 0.63, and 0.61 m and 0.74, and the RMSEs and coefficients of determination (R2s) for heights at tree height (THs) and crown base heights (CBHs) were 0.55 m and 0.85, and 1.02 m and 0.88, respectively. The environmentally responsible behavior of urban forest visitors is a key determinant for the conservation of urban forests. Identifying the determinants of individuals' behavioral intentions and actual behavior in engaging in environmentally responsible actions is a crucial step in promoting such behavior. This research investigates the determinants of environmentally responsible behavior of urban forest visitors in Tehran using Social Cognitive Theory. Data for the study were collected using 456 questionnaires distributed to visitors of urban forests. The data were analyzed using structural equation modelling, which described a 62.9% variance in behavioral intention and 56.6% in environmental behavior of visitors. The socio-structural factors and the observation of others' behaviors were the most significant predictors of behavioral intentions. Outcome expectations and self-efficacy significantly influence both behavioral intentions and actual behavior. This study demonstrates that while behavioral intention is a key factor, other determinants such as outcome expectations and self-efficacy play a crucial role in shaping actual environmentally responsible actions. These results underscore the importance of increasing awareness and enhancing the skills of urban forest visitors regarding environmental behaviors. Furthermore, this study highlights the need to remove barriers and provide the necessary facilities to promote sustained environmentally responsible behavior among visitors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The role of forest community configurations in multiple ecosystem functions remains poorly understood due to the absence of quantifiable metrics for evaluating these configurations. This limitation hinders our ability to use forests to enhance urban well-being effectively. This study integrates both observation and experimentation to elucidate the effects of community configurations on the multifunctionality of forests. We examine seven ecosystem functions in Changchun's urban forests: carbon sequestration, rainwater interception, temperature reduction, humidity increase, particulate matter reduction, noise reduction, and water conservation. Assortment indices, derived from traditional diversity metrics and relative importance values, reveal a negative correlation with multifunctionality. This suggests that improving forest multifunctionality requires a strategically planned species composition rather than simply increasing diversity. Furthermore, the creation of comprehensive configuration indices for evaluating intraspecific configurations has confirmed their beneficial impact on multifunctionality. Our results highlight the significance of intraspecific structural configurations and advocate for using mixed-species plantings in urban forestry practices. We propose practical management strategies to enhance urban forest multifunctionality, including selecting tree species for their functional benefits, implementing uneven-aged plantings, and integrating both shade-tolerant and sun-loving species. Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI), the place where houses and vegetation meet or mix, is prone to cause fire incidents and potentially leads to huge economic loss destructive as well as negative social impacts. Due to rapid urbanization, continuous afforestation and extreme climate, the area of WUI fire outbreak is predicted to increase and might enter the period of high incidence of fires occurred in WUI around the world. China, in facing of similar forest fire risk in WUI, urgently needs more solutions to better prevent and control WUI fire. It summarized current status and previous progress of WUI fire prevention and control, listed several main characteristics of WUI, and proposed a set of overall principles and existing challenges for WUI fire under the new era in China. Urban forestry programs across North America rely on volunteers to lead urban forest stewardship activities and encourage participation in tree planting and general maintenance. We examined the leadership structure of a tree planting initiative (TPI) in the greater Philadelphia region to understand the role and labor contributions of volunteer leaders, and the current challenges of achieving equitable urban tree canopy within community-led TPIs. Using an online survey, we found that leaders contribute unpaid labor, time, and skills within the following categories: group organization and communication, tree-planting and event coordination, tree care and maintenance, and broader environmental education and advocacy. Volunteer leaders also face challenges related to leadership and administrative tasks. This study deepens understandings of the labor needs within volunteer TPIs and potential ways to support the equitable growth of these initiatives moving forward. Individual tree detection in urban areas using unmanned air vehicles (UAVs) RGB imagery poses challenges due to the diverse shapes and structures of urban trees and the complexity of urban forests. The digital surface model (DSM) provides elevation data, and the fusion of UAV RGB imagery with elevation data has emerged as a promising approach for tree detection. Here, we constructed a novel network structure based on the faster region-based convolutional neural network (Faster R-CNN) to detect camphor trees in urban environments using RGB-DSM data. First, an attention fusion module was proposed to effectively fuse the RGB and DSM features by leveraging their complementarity. Second, the bidirectional feature pyramid network (BiFPN) was introduced to enhance the model performance in detecting camphor tree crowns of varying sizes. The results showed that our approach could effectively detect urban camphor trees and achieved an AP of 85.7%. Notably, our approach yielded an AP of 81.3% in urban green spaces. The analysis indicated that our approach was feasible for detecting camphor trees in urban areas and demonstrated its potential to facilitate urban forestry research and applications. Urban plantation dynamics in different topographical and climatic conditions in Odisha were evaluated using linear model selection and regularisation techniques. The main objective was to evaluate how and to what extent the urban plantations respond to various climatic and edaphic conditions. The relationship between vegetation growth and climatic and soil parameters was studied using four statistical learning tools, subset selection, ridge regression, lasso, and partial least squares regression, and their performance was compared to a multiple regression model. The test MSE for the subset selection, ridge regression, lasso, and partial least squares regression models was evaluated to be 16,261.54, 12245.11, 16263.79 and 14,317.21, respectively. Results proved that statistical learning methods, namely subset selection, lasso, ridge regressions and partial least squares regression, were more accurate than multiple linear regression. From the results, it can be safely concluded that temperature shows greater correlation with the growth parameters. Precipitation also plays a vital role in vegetation dynamics. Forests are the largest carbon sinks in the world. They play a crucial role in mitigating climate change through carbon storage. Assessing carbon storage in forests is essential for policy formulation, management planning, and as a strategy to reduce the impacts of global warming. The aims of this research were to explore plant diversity, assess tree biomass, and evaluate carbon storage and carbon credits in urban forestry areas under the Thailand Voluntary Emission Reduction Program (T-VER). The study was conducted in the forested area of Rajamangala University of Technology Isan, Surin Campus, Thailand, and encompassed 60.96 ha. The methodology involved the creation of 10 temporary sample plots, each measuring 40 × 40 m. We then surveyed the species types and measured tree diameter at breast height (DBH) and the total height. Biomass was calculated using allometric equations and the stored carbon was quantified. In this study, we identified 85 species of plants. The analysis of tree biomass averaged 23,1781.25 kg/ha or 231.81 ton/ha. The carbon storage was estimated to be 108.94 tC/ha. When aggregating the data for the entire project, the total carbon storage amounted to 6851.55, with an equivalent carbon sequestration capacity of 25,122 tCO2e in the base year (baseline). We calculated that the carbon storage capacity could increase to 28,741.00 tCO2e with proper maintenance of the urban forest area over a 10-year period, equivalent to a carbon sequestration capacity of 3619 tCO2e. The study addresses the underutilisation of wood in construction in Chile, particularly given the country's robust forestry sector. The research investigates perceptions, tensions, and contradictions among end-users regarding timber construction in Valdivia, a city with a mixed forestry industry. Methods included a comprehensive survey of 96 households across various socioeconomic clusters, utilising descriptive and exploratory statistical analyses. Key findings reveal persistent negative perceptions about wood's durability, fire resistance, and maintenance costs. However, positive aspects, such as lower construction costs and adequate thermal comfort, were also noted. Surprisingly, concerns were raised about wood's environmental impact, including deforestation and its role in combating climate change, contrasting with the material's known ecological benefits. The study concludes that these perceptions are deeply influenced by ideological and sociopolitical factors, suggesting that mere marketing strategies may not suffice to alter public opinion. Instead, a collaborative effort involving public policy, industry advancements, and transparent scientific communication is essential to promote the benefits of timber construction and address the entrenched biases. Context: Urban forest soils represent significant reservoirs of biodiversity in cities. Retaining this diversity under urban land-use change requires understanding on how species richness, community assembly and uniqueness of species assemblages are related to local forest characteristics and surrounding landscape structure. Objectives: Our aim was to assess the significance and relative importance of logging history, tree species composition and urbanization in shaping soil microbial communities across urban spruce-dominated forest landscapes. We investigated responses of microbial diversity from three complementary viewpoints: local diversity, community assembly patterns and community uniqueness. Methods: We collected soil bacterial and fungal metabarcoding data from 73 spruce-dominated forest sites distributed in three urban centers across southern Finland. We related these data to measurements of logging intensity, tree species composition and degree of urbanization. Results: Logging intensity, tree species composition and urbanization affected site-scale microbial diversity, but the effects varied between microbial groups. Only logging intensity had a significant imprint on microbial assembly, and this effect was restricted to bacteria. Relative uniqueness of microbial assemblages at the landscape-scale was coupled with the uniqueness of tree species composition in all microbial groups, and further affected by tree diversity in saprotrophic fungi and urbanization in ectomycorrhizal fungi. Conclusions: In the context of urban spruce-dominated forests, locally diverse tree stands are not necessarily the same as those that contribute the most to landscape-scale diversity. Identifying and preserving contrasting tree stand structures, which support distinctive soil microbial assemblages, may be the winning strategy in maintaining a wide range of soil microbial diversity. Green gentrification implicates urban greening as a driver of neighbourhood 'upgrading' and subsequent displacement. However, it is unclear whether the concept resonates with, or supports the work of, those responsible for much of the greening occurring in cities – urban green planners/practitioners. We interviewed 33 planners/practitioners in Canada to refine our understanding of the relationships between urban greening and gentrification. We found that greening is closely tied to development, with funding/space for greening often provided through development requirements/incentives. Thus, rather than greening causing gentrification (as described in current literature), here greening is often a requirement and direct outcome of new development – contributing to what we describe as a broader greening of the gentrification process that is facilitated by various political-economic factors. Many interviewees stated that their current work focuses on addressing existing inequities rather than strategizing to limit future gentrification. However, they had mixed opinions about whether knowledge of green gentrification as a concept can help them promote equitable urban greening due to their lack of power over where/how urban greening occurs, along with the finding that greening is not causing gentrification. The uneven power dynamics between urban green practitioners/planners, developers, and elected officials also influenced views on whether gentrification is an intended outcome of greening. We conclude that relying on new development to provide urban greening is antithetical to addressing existing green inequities and is likely to exacerbate inequities through associating greening with gentrification. Recent measures to improve housing affordability (i.e. the removal of developer greening requirements) will disrupt the current development-greening relationship but are unlikely to address the issue of inequitable greening. Increased and ongoing collaboration between those working in urban greening, housing, and planning is paramount and should focus on affordability and equity across urban systems – attending to the interplay between greening, housing, affordability, and sustainability. The study evaluated the changes in land use and land cover (LULC) during a 23-year period and its resulting effects on the temperature in Oyo State metropolis. Landsat 8 images of the study area for 2000 and 2023 were downloaded and analyzed to observe and quantify these changes through the use of supervised classification method. Furthermore, the land surface temperature was computed using relevant formula. Within 23 years, the percentage of bare land, built-up areas and waterbody climbed from 0.48%, 38.51%, and 0.20% to 0.59%, 50.20%, and 0.66% respectively, while the percentage of vegetation declined from 60.82% to 48.54% according to the result. Additionally, in 2000, the land surface temperature ranged from 18.82°C to 28.25°C, and in 2023, it varied between 19.89°C and 32.21°C. Over the course of the 23-year study, it became clear that changes in the state's land cover and land use impacted on the rising temperatures, which were mostly brought on by a decline in vegetation cover. The study finds that Oyo State's metropolitan area is warmer than it was twenty-three years ago and as a result, it suggests that the government should support urban forestry initiatives. Campuses of Nigerian universities, especially the older ones, are home to aged trees that were originally planted for environmental beautification and aesthetics. However, due to the current global climate change and increased vulnerability to abiotic and biotic stressors, the old trees could pose threats to pedestrians, structures, and roads within the university campus environments. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to develop a geodatabase and evaluate the health risk assessment of avenue trees on selected roads in a tertiary institution in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria using appropriate standard methods. Results obtained reported a total of 121 individual avenue trees belonging to 14 species along the study roads. The geospatial distribution analysis revealed that Emotan road had a lower density of avenue trees compared to Benue and Oduduwa roads. Furthermore, the health risk assessment indicated that 17.35% of the individual avenue trees had defects, posing potential hazards and risks of tree failure, and potential damage to pedestrians, vehicles, and neighboring utilities. The developed geodatabase is user-friendly and allows for easy data storage and quick information retrieval on the avenue trees, enhancing their maintenance and risk management. Furthermore, this study shows that systematic replacement, replanting, and management of avenue tree species could be a proactive initiative for the expansion of the geodatabase and to reduce negative health impacts. The introduction of wood-boring insects to non-native areas can pose a significant threat to global forest ecosystems. Aromia bungii and Massicus raddei, native to Asia including Korea but potentially important in urban forestry worldwide, are severe trunk borers that have recently infested host trees in urban landscapes of Korea. The signs of external injury can help identify cerambycid-infested trees. However, assessing the internal condition of trees without causing damage is challenging, which hinders the management of infested trees that are still alive. This study evaluated the potential use of sonic tomography to assess injury characteristics in the woody parts of trees, such as Prunus × yedoensis and Quercus palustris infested by A. bungii and M. raddei, respectively. Among the 45 investigated trees, the number of holes on external parts was recorded by visual examination. Sonic tomography images revealed decayed areas, allowing for a comparison of internal damage between infested and non-infested trees. The internal status of trees infested by the two cerambycid beetles differed from that of healthy trees. While some healthy trees exhibited minimal internal damage, those that were not infested by beetles showed decayed areas, potentially caused by non-biological factors such as frozen cracks. In conclusion, sonic tomography equipment can potentially be used for non-invasive assessment of internal injuries caused by wood-boring insects in urban trees. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Climate change poses a threat to the health and survival of urban trees. To bolster the resilience and adaptability of urban trees to climate change impacts, an essential step involves assessing the risks faced by urban trees due to climatic shifts. Based on key climate variables including Annual Mean Temperature (AMT), Annual Mean Precipitation (AMP), Minimum temperature of the coldest month (MTCM), Precipitation of driest quarter (PDQ) and Maximum Temperature of the Warmest Month (MTWM). These variables are essential for identifying tree species at risk in different baseline and future periods in the city by calculating three indicators: climate exposure, safety margin, and climate risk. Based on the climate of origin categories for sixty tree species in Tianjin, China, have been classified into four distinct groups: Temperate Dry Climate (TDC), Warm-Temperate Sub-Humid Climate (WTSC), Subtropical Semi-Humid Climate (SSHC), and Humid Subtropical Climate (HSC). We found that species exceeded their safety margins in each variable, with precipitation conditions being a key constraint on survival during the baseline period. By 2050, the number of tree species at risk in AMT and MTWM significantly increased. Among the four climate types, SSHC trees showed high habitat suitability under both baseline and projected future climate conditions. Conversely, TDC trees demonstrated lower habitat suitability and should be prioritized for monitoring and protection in the future. The workflow and results in this study can provide references for future-oriented urban tree monitoring, management, and species selection under climate change.

Heat exposure poses health risks that disproportionately burden disadvantaged communities. Trees protect against heat, but significant barriers exist to growing robust urban forests. In drier climates, complex logistics of watering during a multi-year establishment period pose a challenge because street trees are typically unirrigated and funding for maintenance is generally unavailable. This study tested the impacts of varying theory-guided community engagement approaches on beliefs, attitudes, knowledge, and behaviors related to foster street tree stewardship and individual-level heat mitigation actions in 116 households in Los Angeles County, USA. We tested a control intervention against experimental messaging focused on either public health or environmental health, and also segmented participants by the degree of prior household engagement with a local tree planting group. Outcomes measured were soil moisture, tree health, and survey responses indicating benefits and barriers related to tree stewardship. Results indicate that intervention messages had limited effect on these outcomes, and that level of engagement by the tree planting group was a stronger predictor of tree stewardship. We also found that tree stewardship correlated positively to heat protection measures, suggesting that environmental engagement may be an effective portal to reducing heat risk.

The increasing emissions of gaseous pollutants of anthropogenic origin, such as carbon dioxide (CO2), which causes global warming, have raised great interest in developing and improving processes that allow their mitigation. Among them, adsorption on porous materials has been proposed as a sustainable alternative. This work presents a study of CO2 equilibrium adsorption at low temperatures (0, 10, and 20 °C) over a wide range of low pressures, on activated carbon derived from Eucalyptus (ES) and Patula pine (PP) forest waste, and carbonaceous material derived from waste tires (WT). The precursors of these materials were previously prepared, and their physicochemical properties were characterized. ES and PP were thermochemically treated with phosphoric acid, and WT was oxidized with nitric acid. Additionally, these materials were used to obtain monoliths using uniaxial compaction techniques and different binding agents, with better results obtained with montmorillonite. A total of six adsorbent solids had their textural and chemical properties characterized and were tested for CO2 adsorption. The highest specific surface area (1405 m2 g−1), and micropore properties were found for activated carbon derived from Eucalyptus whose highest adsorption capacity ranged from 2.27 mmol g−1 (at 0 °C and 100 kPa) to 1.60 mmol g−1 (at 20 °C and 100 kPa). The activated carbon monoliths presented the lowest CO2 adsorption capacities; however, the studied materials showed high potential for CO2 capture and storage applications at high pressures. The isosteric heats of adsorption were also estimated for all the materials and ranged from 16 to 45 kJ mol−1 at very low coverage explained by the energetic heterogeneity and weak repulsive interactions among adsorbed CO2 molecules.
