Rates of youth firearm exposure and carriage are well-established, but less work has examined how exposure to police violence and firearm violence, as victim or witness, may be associated with beliefs in gun ownership for society or access to guns. This study used survey data from a multiracial sample of 276 youth living in New Orleans, Louisiana (M age = 17.76) to examine these associations. Results from binary logistic regressions confirmed a significant association between higher belief in gun ownership for safety and all violence exposures, directly and indirectly. We did not find support for an association between gun access and any violence exposures. The findings shed light on pathways to firearm violence risk and provide critical information on youth firearm attitudes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article explores the long-term impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on everyday life through a qualitative research study focusing on the role of age in managing uncertainty. Grounded in a cultural and symbolic perspective on risk, the study examines how rituals, emotions, and cultural contexts shaped the experiences of individuals aged 15–34 in Milan, Italy, as they navigated daily risks. Drawing on 42 semi-structured interviews conducted between September 2022 and May 2023, the findings reveal that age significantly influenced how young people navigated post-pandemic uncertainties. The youngest participants often felt fear and anxiety, mainly due to concerns for others' well-being, coupled with a strong need for social interaction and community. In contrast, slightly older young professionals showed a more complex emotional response characterised by caution, frustration, and empathy. Across all age groups in the sample, daily routines and social interactions kept reinforcing societal norms and hierarchies, particularly concerning generations and family dynamics within Italian culture, with a specific emphasis on vulnerable populations, namely older adults. These findings highlight the importance of considering both life stage and cultural context when analysing responses to uncertainty. Still, they underscore young people's adaptability as both a reactive process and a forward-looking one involving agency. This flexibility was particularly evident in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Lombardy region of Italy, where the virus spread earlier and with more severe consequences than in most parts of the Western world. This research deals with integration theory in measuring cultural diversity in the urban context. Cultural diversity is the recognition of the rights of all groups in society, so the presence of Muslims in Western society is an example of reflecting cultural diversity in the Western urban context. Integration theory is an attempt to bring a variety of theories and models into one framework. It consists of four quadrants, each quadrant representing a specific scale. Muslims represent the social part interacting with Western society, which is the subjective, individual and collective part of the integration theory (the first and third quadrants), and the Islamic religious buildings and their interaction with the urban context represent the objective part of the integration theory (the second and fourth quadrants). A specific questionnaire is chosen for each quarter and the results of the questionnaire provide a measure of the subjective and objective aspects of integration theory. The results showed that the subjective aspects of individuals and their relationship with Western society are the highest percentage of the objective aspects of the requirements of the Islamic religious building or the relationship of the religious building with the Western urban context. The shaping of urban features is profoundl influenced by the underlying urban context, and architectural features and style management are important parts of the protection and cultivation of urban identity. However, in China, oversight in managing the urban context often results in neglect of the cultural values embedded in architectural aspects at the micro level. This, in turn, contributes to the convergence and disorder of urban architectural features and styles. This study builds upon the significance of the urban context and takes the typical Chinese megacity Wuhan as a case study. First, the research systematically outlines the diachronic development of architectural features and styles in Wuhan and meticulously analyses the prevailing problems. Subsequently, an evaluation is conducted on the efficacy of existing architectural features and style management policies and the approval processes for architectural schemes. Finally, the research formulates a comprehensive architectural feature and style management and implementation system that harmonizes Wuhan’s urban cultural heritage and urban identification characteristics. This paper aims to contribute to the refinement of urban identity management and the preservation of architectural diversity to foster a more cohesive and culturally resonant urban environment in Wuhan.

According to the recent policies regarding energy use in buildings and the need of retrofit strategies, the aim of this work is to support policies concerning the installation of ground source heat exchangers in urban and historical areas, raising the awareness on the potential energy saving achievable with optimal sizing and limited impact on the urban environment. Archetypes have been developed distinguishing among existing and historic buildings, focusing on single-family terrace houses, which are the typical residential buildings in European historic centres.A methodology for the optimal sizing of ground source heat pumps, eventually considering dual-source system or air system has been developed combining simulations of a photovoltaic system to estimate the self-sufficiency and the self-consumption for five orientations of the building. Extreme results have been obtained for warm climates, with negligible heating energy demand and possibly free cooling systems rather than traditional cooling systems needed in wintertime. Penalty temperature was acceptable despite unbalanced energy demands. With proper inclination, photovoltaic systems could provide up to 40% of self-sufficiency share also in northern climates. An energy - economic analysis was carried out obtaining a variety of cases representing a general overview of the European building stock and the potential benefits achievable in terms of renewable energy share, energy savings and economic investments needed to be extended to simulations at urban scale.

In recent years, new spaces were required for a variety of activities. This study deals with library buildings as a case study that is most important to cultural buildings. New library buildings are being built as part of the city's attempts to promote visibility, image, and brand as a desirable future and identity. A large number of new public libraries are thoughtfully constructed in rundown urban areas and former industrial zones to provide attractive new urban and meeting spaces. As a result of the recent digitization of knowledge resources, library spaces have become less popular, and they have had to reinvent their role in the urban fabric. To reach a wider audience and become vibrant spaces, libraries are redirecting their activities. The research's objective is to present and discuss some international library building designs that represent distinct cultural and socioeconomic ideas. Models were chosen from a variety of locations that, for users and frequent visitors to the context in general, were marked by change and development. The goal of the analysis of the chosen global case studies is to determine the successes and lessons learnt. Followed by case studies from Egypt from which a survey has been conducted. Four case studies from Egypt were selected from various locations in order to gather different viewpoints using a questionnaire. The study employs a theoretical analytical methodology, with case studies, comparisons, and discussions; analyzing the implementation of new activities in contemporary libraries to determine their impact on the urban and human level, as well as how they interact with the context and human perceptions. The study concludes by recommendations and suggestions to case studies based on users’ preferences. The findings illustrate the changes that have taken place in modern library spaces, helping to reshape the identity of a new community or development area by creating a lively and communicative environment that will draw a big population and serve the general public.

For many cities around the world, the construction of iconic buildings is a major strategy to improve their urban space and enhance recognition. Yet, newly built iconic buildings usually spark controversy owing to their relationship with the urban context of the city. In this study, revolving around Dongdaemun Design Plaza and Park, we analyze and evaluate the functional influences of its reconstruction on the urban context of Seoul. We found that though the DPP has a positive effect on the city image and cultural exchange of Seoul, it is barely satisfactory for maintaining and extending the urban context. Through the combination of a random sampling questionnaire and triangular fuzzy number analysis, we transfer previous subjective comments about the DPP into an objective evaluation, analyze its influence on the dimension of culture, and call for consideration of the continuity of the urban context in future urban planning. The results of this study provide a new perspective on quantifying the urban contextual influence of iconic buildings, reminding city planners of the balance between the development of business and the sustainability of the urban context. This study examines how Black and Latinx youth organizers navigate intersectionality and positionality as they campaigned for community and educational justice. Studies have shown the value of youth organizing for Black and Latinx populations but there is limited knowledge of how members navigate their differences to deepen solidarity efforts. The research questions are (1) how do youth organizers negotiate their positionality in terms of privileges and vulnerabilities? and (2) how do youth organizers show up for each other when addressing issues that do not affect everyone the same? We draw on a longitudinal, mixed-methods study that follows multiple cohorts of youth organizers, which revealed that young people in youth organizing spaces had a sophisticated understanding of their own identities and positionality in relation to their campaigns and other youth who did not share the same identity. This study aims to explore the influence of spatial functional differences on the overall relationship between soundscape and visual landscape in the context of historical blocks and then propose design guidelines for audiovisual elements. Audiovisual stimulus materials were collected from 11 representative locations in typical urban historical blocks along the southeast coast of China and classified into residential, cultural leisure, and commercial spaces based on their primary function, activity, and visual environment characteristics. An evaluation environment was created in the laboratory using virtual reality technology, and a subjective evaluation questionnaire was administered to 71 volunteers regarding the perception of audiovisual elements and the evaluation of the overall environment. Structural equation modeling was used to elucidate the relationships between sound source perception, soundscape perception, visual landscape satisfaction, and overall harmony of the environment and to compare the effects of functional differences at different locations on the overall relationships. The results show significant differences in the types of perceived sound sources at different functional locations, which makes the sound sources affecting soundscape perception and visual landscape satisfaction different. Residential space is mainly affected by artificial sound and mechanical noise; in cultural and leisure spaces, all three types of sound sources have a significant impact, and only natural sound has enhanced subjective perception; the impact of artificial sound in commercial space is crucial. In addition, visual landscape satisfaction should be prioritized over soundscape pleasure to enhance the overall harmony of the environment. In residential and commercial spaces, reducing artificial and mechanical noise can effectively enhance the harmony of the environment; in cultural and leisure areas, reducing artificial sounds and increasing natural sounds or historical landscape elements can enhance the overall harmony of the environment. The results of this paper provide empirical evidence for understanding the overall relationship between soundscape factors in urban contexts and suggest that place function should be considered an important context when designing soundscapes. Ongoing urban developments and contemporary social challenges increase the need for different typologies of new urban and architectural concepts, where the issue of built heritage, specifically in the case of Skopje, has become a vast problem. With the decomposition of the former Yugoslavia states in the 1990s, each of these new states inherited a significant amount of built heritage, including monuments, buildings, landscapes, and infrastructure, constructed according to the prevailing socialist urban-planning and architectural doctrines, and directed within and towards the immediate contexts of the Yugoslav community. Most of this inherited architecture vanished across the ex-Yugoslav space, while a large part of it is still left in a state of limbo. This article aims to show the socialist built heritage's adaptation, or transformation, into new urban scenarios, using the case of Skopje to reveal more about the relationship between the heritage and the local inhabitants. It will closely examine the socialist architecture and its relation with the local memory communities, or the locals' memories. More precisely, we will focus on one unique construct that has slowly vanished in the modern-day living: the notion of mesna zaednica. In focusing on this notion in the urban district of Taftalidže, Skopje, we will discuss the means of transposing socialist communal features into the new, post-socialist architectural rhetoric and way of life, as well as engage with various discourses about urban heritage emerging in the urban context. Finally, we will argue in favor of several heritage and urban development theses, which can be applied to the particular case study. The deindustrialization of colonial India had a significant impact on the development of sociospatial frameworks for modern cities in India. The industrial buildings lost their original functions and it is often impossible to restore older buildings, even being sympathetic to history. Now these industrial buildings stand as an iconic backdrop to the urban fabric. Adaptive reuse is an alternate program to give life to obsolete structures by retaining their integrity while providing for contemporary needs. This research is an attempt to evaluate the adaptive-reuse potential of abandoned roof tile factories along the Malabar coast in India. The first tile factory (1865) established by Basel Missionaries of Germany in Mangalore, marked the beginning of one of the region's largest industries that produced Mangalore tiles. These clay roof tiles later defined the language of pitched roof structures throughout the southwest coast of India. By the end of the twentieth century, the tile industry had declined drastically, resulting in the closure of many factories. The aim is to investigate and analyze the adaptive reuse potential of abandoned industrial buildings and understand perspectives on repurposing them. Through primary and secondary researches, a total of 106 factories were investigated and it has been established that almost 90 percent of the extant tile factories have the potential to be reused, focusing on both tangible and intangible aspects. Though this research is focused on the geographical region of Malabar and the roof tile industry, the methodology can be upscaled and implemented pan-India, concentrating on industrial heritage buildings. The goal of this research is to investigate the definition, development of techniques, and consequences of context, as well as to contribute to the growth of knowledge in the field of study. For this purpose, a full systematic literature review (SLR) was undertaken on the methods and approaches that have been used in the generation of architectural knowledge in recent years. The Google Scholar Web of Science and Scopus databases were searched for relevant studies as part of a directed SLR. The article describes the SLR methodology, which condensed the related studies to 79 publications using the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses reporting procedure. The chosen publications were examined quantitatively. The second step of the inquiry was a qualitative analysis of the data, which was based on the results of the quantitative analysis. It has been found that current research on the context of architecture has concentrated on new designs, infill designs, Islamic architecture, and mosque designs in a historical and urban context, as opposed to studies that have concentrated on vernacular and sustainable architecture. Along with the conclusions drawn about the research domains for context knowledge in architecture, it is clear that the studies focus on specific topics such as physical context, sociocultural context, local context, and place identity. Several fuzzy decision models are proposed in literature to solve urban planning problems. In this research we present a novel GIS-based framework to solve decision problems in urban planning based on a System of Fuzzy Relation Equations in which the unknowns represent characteristics affecting observable facts constituting the input variables. Aim of this research is to partition the urban study area into subzones, each of which identifies a sub-area of the study area within which the set of analyzed characteristics are homogeneous. The study area is initially decomposed in atomic urban areas called microzones; for each microzone are calculated the greatest and lowest solutions of a System of Fuzzy Relation Equations by using the Universal solution Algorithm and are calculated and fuzzified the values of the output variables. Spatially adjoining microzones with same output variables are dissolved forming homogeneous urban areas with reference to the problem analyzed, called Urban Contexts. For each output variable a thematic map is constructed; in addition, a thematic map of its reliability is created. This framework is tested on a study area given by the district of Ponticelli in the municipality of Naples (Italy); comparison tests performed with respect to a previous GIS-based framework based on a System of Fuzzy Relation Equations show that our method provides a more detailed knowledge of the characteristics of the urban study area with reference to the problem dealt with. The article presents one of the virtual layers of modern architecture of Yekaterinburg, the capital of the Middle Urals, which has been created by the author for two decades and offered to investors and city authorities for realization. The article touches the problem of stylistic and large-scale juxtaposition of modern and historical layers of the urban architecture in the context of intensive development of the urban structure.

Increasing computational power and improving deep learning methods have made computer vision technologies pervasively common in urban environments. Their applications in policing, traffic management, and documenting public spaces are increasingly common (Ridgeway 2018, Coifman et al. 1998, Sun et al. 2020). Despite the often-discussed biases in the algorithms' training and unequally borne benefits (Khosla et al. 2012), almost all applications similarly reduce urban experiences to simplistic, reductive, and mechanistic measures. There is a lack of context, depth, and specificity in these practices that enables semantic knowledge or analysis within urban contexts, especially within the context of using and occupying urban space. This paper will critique existing uses of artificial intelligence and computer vision in urban practices to propose a new framework for understanding people, action, and public space. This paper revisits Geertz's (1973) use of thick descriptions in generating interpretive theories of culture and activity and uses this lens to establish a framework to approach evaluating the varied uses of computer vision technologies that weigh meaning. By discussing cases of implemented examples of urban computer vision—from LinkNYC and Numina's urban measurements to the Detroit Police's use of DataWorks Plus's facial recognition technology—it proposes a framework for evaluating the thickness of the algorithm's conclusions against the computational method's complexity required to produce that outcome. Further, we discuss how the framework's positioning may differ (and conflict) between different users of the technology, from engineer to urban planner and policymaker, to citizen. This paper also discusses how the current use and training of deep learning algorithms and how this process limits semantic learning and proposes three potential methodologies toward gaining a more contextually specific, urban-semantic, description of urban space relevant to urbanists. This paper contributes to the critical conversations regarding the proliferation of artificial intelligence by challenging the current applications of these technologies in the urban environment by highlighting their failures within this context while also proposing an evolution of these algorithms that may ultimately make them sensitive and useful within this spatial and cultural milieu. Adolescent sleep deprivation is a pressing public health issue in the United States as well as other countries. The contexts of adolescents lives are changing rapidly, but little is known about the factors that adolescents themselves believe affect their sleep. This study uses a social-ecological framework to investigate multiple levels of perceived influence on sleep patterns of urban adolescents. Data were drawn from interviews and surveys conducted in three California public high schools. Most participants identified homework as their primary barrier to sleep, particularly those engaged in procrastinating, multitasking, or those with extracurricular demands. Results indicate that the home context has important implications for adolescent sleep, including noise, household rules, and perceived parent values. These findings identify important areas for future research and intervention, particularly regarding the roles of parents.

The installation of Traffic-Calming Devices (TCDs) is an extremely valuable countermeasure to prevent vulnerable road users from fatalities in urban contexts. Among all the TCDs, Berlin Speed Cushions (BSCs) seem to be one of the most promising because they reduce speeds but do not affect emergency vehicles. However, previous research on BSCs is limited and lacks some important aspects, such as the analysis of speeds at different distances from the cushion or the investigation of the influence of other context variables. In this study, BSCs of different lengths (2.20 m, 2.70 m, and 3.20 m) were deployed in the City of Bari on three roads belonging to the same area. To overcome the limitations of previous research, speeds were recorded using a laser-speed gun before and after the implementation of BSCs, in different conditions, in order to take into account the effect of the following factors: the time of day, day of the week, and average hourly traffic. An ANOVA analysis was performed, with speed as the dependent variable and the above-reported factors and the test road site (proxy variable for the cushion length) as factors, independently repeated for six distance ranges with respect to the cushion. The results reveal that speed evidently decreases immediately before (down to about 13 km/h) and after the cushion (down to about 12 km/h), time of the day is an important factor (speed decrease is much more evident during the morning than the evening), and the length of the cushion has some influence on speed decrease (the speed decrease is lower for the longest cushion). Exposure to community adversities and violence can be associated with a cascade of neurocognitive, mental health, and behavioral challenges among urban adolescents. Influenced by the bio-ecological framework, this study examines if problems with executive functioning (EF) exacerbate the relation between exposure to community adversity and violence and internalizing symptoms (e.g., depression, anxiety, and somatic symptoms) and externalizing behaviors (e.g., hyperactivity and attention problems) for males and females. Participants included 300 primarily African American and Latine adolescents (M age = 15.42, SD = 1.21; 51% female) who reside in 30 census tracts from urban neighborhoods historically and systematically divested from, located on the West and South sides of Chicago. Pending the radical reconfiguration of power, systems, and community to fundamentally challenge the systemic policies and processes that contribute to these adverse experiences, findings from this study provide important implications for clinical practice and school-based interventions that could support adolescents' psychological, behavioral, and emotional needs. Africa is urbanizing faster than any other continent. This urbanization is more a demographic than an industrial phenomenon, as was the case in Europe. It is accompanied by an increasingly important metropolisation. In Cameroon, metropolisation, understood as the process of the concentration of command functions (political, economic, and cultural) in a small number of cities, mainly affects the cities of Yaoundé (political capital) and Douala (economic capital), with notable consequences. This study aims to analyze death in an urban context. It tackles, from a sociological perspective (sociology of funerals and urban studies), the question of urban vulnerabilities, their production and their reproduction. Based on the issue of death in an urban Cameroonian context, it tries to show how the loss of a loved one and the ensuing funeral can reveal the forms of inequality that structure the lives of certain populations in the Cameroonian urban field, specifically in the city of Douala. The field data that was mobilized comes from a collection carried out expressly for the drafting of this article.

In the current global pandemic, actions are taken to prevent Covid-19 spread, residents are embracing small-scale gardening activities in their homes; especially in low to middle income communities, 3rd world countries as in Africa, depending on individual activities.Despite that, there is a lack provided by literature review about home gardening, the paper then shifts to the exploration of the gender influence on home gardening, poses questions; how do gender roles influence home gardening habits, and how would such activities potentially benefit the gardeners, and are the benefits equally distributed or are they potentially skewed to one gender over the other?Using an imperical quantitative approach through a survey, the results imply hypotheses and test them using WarpPLS, to verify their validity.This paper highlight effects on the connection between gender, gardening activities, and their potential benefits. The findings can help urban authorities to create a fair and inclusive environment.

Community violence and its physical health consequences are well known among youth living in urban settings. However, less is known about the cumulative effect of contextual and demographic risk factors on posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) among vulnerable youth. Longitudinal data (baseline, 9-month, 21-month) were analyzed to investigate trajectories of PTSS, internalizing, and externalizing symptoms among 188 youth (M age 12.87, 60.6% male) treated for an assault injury in an emergency department. Youth exhibited decreased mental health problems over time. Higher levels of internalizing symptoms related to decreased PTSS over time, while higher levels of PTSS predicted increased externalizing symptoms over time, thus underscoring the importance of understanding comorbidity. Gender and stressful life events were significantly associated with initial levels of symptoms and trajectories. These findings suggest the importance of understanding PTSS in the context of environments and personal factors to support appropriate treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Suzhou, one of the most famous historical cities in China, has undergone significant urbanization over recent decades. These changes have caused a gradual separation of Suzhou's urban heritage from its urban development and hindered the further growth of the city. This study analyzes the distribution of tangible and intangible heritages that constitute the context of Suzhou combined with the historic urban landscape approach to obtain the following conclusions: (1) The current distribution of Suzhou's urban heritage does not completely overlap with the built-up area of the city, and the non-overlapping areas reveal the imbalance of the current urban development and the fracture of the context of Suzhou; this imbalance is still a blind spot in the planning process. (2) The use of intangible cultural heritage will help to establish the possibility of contextual continuation in areas that lack urban heritage. (3) Multi-use community spaces that carry the intangible cultural heritage are particularly important for new urban areas, as they can help urban residents understand the traditional way of life in the region. (4) An approach to heritage management that goes beyond elitism, in conjunction with residents and communities, will help the ancient city to find a better balance between contextual continuity and economic development. When immigrants move to a new city, they tend to develop distinct relationships with the urban landscape, which in turn becomes the new setting of their routine-based activities that evolve over time. Previous works in environmental psychology have quantitatively examined non-native residents' development of sense of place towards their new environment. In this paper, we introduce the spatial perspective into studying the sense of place experienced by non-natives in an urban context. We study the person-place bonds, relationships, and feelings cultivated by non-native residents living in the city of Lisbon (Portugal) through an online map-based survey. Then, we carried out spatial analysis aimed at distinguishing and visualizing the different facets of sense of place developed by two participant groups: short-term residents and long-term residents. Results showed that while short-term residents reported bonds with places, long-term residents' senses of place were more intense and broader throughout the city. The correlations, associations, and relationships between participant groups and the dimensions of sense of place allowed us to observe features and patterns that were previously described in the literature, although adding the spatial lenses can potentially provide better insights for urban planning, community development, and inclusive policies.

Purpose: this paper aims to present vernacular artifacts produced to aid the domestic cultivation of plants and discuss its sustainability. Methodology: research using the digital universe to gather market and vernacular products for cultivation and field research through visits to the residences of people who practice some type of planting with the same objective. Research Limitation/implication: compare the product research with bibliographic research with references from social design, co-creation, sustainability, and innovation, used to support the proposal to compare homemade products with market analogs (if any) presenting as many possible justifications for the consumer's decisions to create their own products instead of buying them, representing a potential opportunity for design. Results: the creation of vernacular artifacts is independent of design quality projects. Most likely they will always exist, as interests go beyond those related to the need for a specific product. But for the designer, observing these initiatives is a way of understanding the users desires. Originality/Value of paper: presentation of sustainability precepts of and the reuse of materials and products from the perspective of sustainable design, also the potentialities for working in this field.

The study explores how a sample of trauma-exposed, Black boys experience their school environment and socioemotionally navigate barriers in their school setting. A content analysis was completed on focus group data collected from ten Black boys at a high school in an urban setting. The content was reviewed under the constructivist-interpretivist epistemology, using an empowerment theoretical framework. Findings included the following themes: (1) Teachers Change Your Moods--conflictual relationships with teachers negatively impacted their mood; (2) They'll Switch Up on You in a Half Second--interactions with classmates (e.g., social posturing or physical touch) could also be a barrier to their success; (3) When I'm Having a Bad Moment--descriptions of how they cope with challenging experiences in school; and (4) Tell Me Why This is Useful--instructional and relational suggestions for school staff to improve their learning environment. The institution of municipality during the Qajar era faced many obstacles and problems from its establishment until the first Pahlavi era. After the constitutional revolution and the approval of the municipal law, different provinces of Iran were required to establish and implement municipal laws. This law was formalized in the port of Bushehr in 1909. The role and position of Bushehr in the political and economic equations of the Persian Gulf and southern Iran. It can be considered effective in this matter. At the same time as the Pahlavi era, Bushehr Municipality became one of the most important institutions and modern urban institutions in the field of public services. The present study seeks to investigate the formation of the municipal association in Bushehr and its historical history during the Qajar period, the role of the municipality as a new institution in the urban structure of Bushehr during the first Pahlavi era, and the performance and consequences of the municipality's actions in urban developments. The findings of the research indicate that despite financial poverty, lack of facilities and lack of urban infrastructure, lack of proper budget and non-cooperation of government organizations with the municipality in Bushehr, this executive body by presenting construction and social plans And health was able to fulfill its initial goals to a large extent. The consequences and results of the municipality's actions in the field of construction, health and improvement of city streets during the first Pahlavi period have been defensible. Nowadays, urban framework, stressed by the growing anthropic pressure and its constantly evolving use requests is split by uneven structures, contexts, users and patchy needs, which come out to be inefficient and ineffective in access and management. This fact is directly connected both with morph-functional structure of urban texture and its continuous changing trends. The most important consequences of this situation are some negative effects that produce entropy, mistaken anthropic space uses, ecological networks decrease and most of all a substantial urban life quality reduction connected with mobility problems and non-resilient spaces' use at the different plan scales. These elements make it necessary to restart thinking about environmental resources' sustainable use and management. Universal design comes out to be a useful tool related to urban space planning strategies in terms of resilient choices and actions. Design for all plan approach also represents a good solution for matching people needs to urban environmental quality improvement. This idea is supported by the experience of a certain case study, that considers universal design application positive effects on open public space plan strategy in Oslo, together with an example of an active use of water to plan a sustainable public space in Rotterdam.

This article concerns the “Roma Forestiera” project that has been carried out for the last ten years by the independent Circolo Gianni Bosio organization, which is devoted to the study of popular memory, folk song, and oral history. The author describes the experiences gathered while recording witnesses to history on the streets and in the migrant centres.

This review conducts a systematic analysis of a total of 90 Smart City articles from an urban context perspective based on the 'Urban Engagement and Impact Analytical Framework'. Many previous smart city reviews have been conducted through bibliometric analysis from a holistic viewpoint, finding the performance, trend and focused area of smart city research. Therefore, the principal objective of this review is to explore the gap in the adequacy of smart city research engagement with diverse urban contexts, to provide a smart urban environment focusing on Smart Urbanism. This paper highlights three principal aspects of each article; 1) Whose perspective that Smart City research mostly conducted by, 2) The depth of Urban context engagement conducted during Smart City development, 3) Which part of urban development is particularly affected by. These three dimensions are significant factors correlated to each other, that form healthy smart urbanism. By doing so, the findings from this review will lead the smart city research to a practical intervention in urban planning through engagement with the insightful urban contexts. This will offer a positive impact on developing a sustainable urban livelihood for the inhabitants by extending the view of the smart city development towards Smart urbanism within the urban context viewpoint. • In-depth urban contextual engagement is lacking in current Smart City research. • An Extension view of Smart City embracing balanced urban context is essential. • Taxonomy analytical framework is proposed for the review analysis. • The practical intervention urges for Smart City growth as urban planning. • Active engagement of scholars from architecture and urban planning is significant. Urban greening expertise and programs are pursued and circulated globally to enhance urban livability and sustainability, but the outcomes are often mixed and are accompanied by side effects. Drawing on the concept of "worlding," this paper examines the processes and outcomes of a training program that introduced tree climbing techniques from overseas to reduce the aggressive pruning practices by the municipal workforce in Bangkok, Thailand. Steered by Thai civil society organizations (CSOs) and international arborists, the training program was supported by the city government and local forestry experts. However, the outcomes were limited. A variety of temporal, logistical, and place-specific factors (including traffic, weather, size and accessibility of trees), constrained the applicability of the introduced techniques for pruning street trees in Bangkok. These crucial urban contextual factors were neglected in the training program design due to knowledge conflicts between the "civic experts" and "lay practitioners," which undermined the potential of the training program. Illustrating urban treescapes as everyday workplaces and knowledge battlegrounds, this paper argues that aspirations for world-leading expertise might hamper the expression of tacit knowledge that stems from and coordinates with a specific urban context. The conclusion highlights the importance of inclusivity to achieve successful transnational circulation of greening expertise and broader urban transformative attempts involving global knowledge exchange. • Everyday urban tree maintenance can be impacted by global knowledge circulation. • Misalignments of priorities and emphases undermine outcomes of urban tree programs. • Tree care practices require tacit knowledge emerging from specific urban context. • Inclusivity is pivotal for integrating global greening expertise with local know-how.
