The existence of dark matter in the universe is inferred from abundant astrophysical and cosmological observations. The Global Argon Dark Matter Collaboration (GADMC) aims to perform the searches for dark matter in the form of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), whose collisions with argon nuclei would produce nuclear recoils with tens of keV energy. Argon has been considered an excellent medium for the direct detection of WIMPs as argon-based scintillation detectors can make use of pulse shape discrimination (PSD) to separate WIMP-induced nuclear recoil signals from electron recoil backgrounds with extremely high efficiency. However, argon-based direct dark matter searches must confront the presence of intrinsic 39Ar as the predominant source of electron recoil backgrounds (it is a beta-emitter with an endpoint energy of 565 keV and half-life of 269 years). Even with PSD, the 39Ar activity in atmospheric argon (AAr), mainly produced and maintained by cosmic ray-induced nuclear reactions, limits the ultimate size of argon-based detectors and restricts their ability to probe very-low-energy events. The discovery of argon from deep underground wells with significantly less 39Ar than that in AAr was an important step in the development of direct dark matter detection experiments using argon as the active target. Thanks to pioneering research and successful R&D, in 2012, the first 160 kg batch of underground argon (UAr) was extracted from a CO2 well in Cortez, Colorado. The DarkSide-50 experiment at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS) in Italy, the first liquid argon detector ever operated with a UAr target, demonstrated a ∼ 1,400 suppression of the 39Ar activity with respect to the atmospheric argon. An even larger suppression is expected for 42Ar (another intrinsic beta-emitter with the 42K daughter isotope, also a beta-emitter) as its production is expected mainly in the upper atmosphere. Following the results of DarkSide-50, the GADMC initiated the UAr project for extraction from underground and cryogenic purification of 100 t of argon to be used as a target in the next-generation experiment DarkSide-20k. This paper contains a description of the Urania Plant in Cortez, Colorado, where UAr is extracted; the Aria Plant in Sardinia, Italy, an industrial-scale plant comprising a 350-m state-of-the-art cryogenic isotopic distillation column, designed for further purification of the extracted argon and further reduction of the isotopic abundance of 39Ar; and DArT, a facility for UAr radiopurity qualification at the Canfranc Underground Laboratory (LSC), Spain. Moreover, the high radiopurity of UAr leads to other possible applications, for instance, for those neutrinoless double-beta decay experiments using argon as shielding material or, more generally, for all those activities on argon-based detectors in high-energy physics or nuclear physics, which will be briefly discussed. The discovery of argon from deep underground sources with significantly less 39 Ar than atmospheric argon was an important step in the development of direct dark matter detection experiments using argon as the active target. We report on the design and operation of a low-background single-phase liquid argon detector that was built to study the 39 Ar content of this underground argon. Underground argon from the Kinder Morgan CO 2 plant in Cortez, Colorado was determined to have less than 0.65% of the 39 Ar activity in atmospheric argon, or 6.6 mBq/kg specific 39 Ar activity. Underground argon (UAr) with lower cosmogenic activities of 39Ar and 42Ar has been planned as a detector in detecting scintillation light and charge collection using time projection chambers for dark matter searches and as a veto detector in suppressing backgrounds for neutrinoless double beta decay (0 ν β β) experiments. Long-lived radioactive isotopes, 39Ar and 42Ar, can also be produced on the surface when UAr is pumped out from a deep well. Understanding the production of long-lived isotopes in Ar is important for utilizing UAr for dark matter and 0 ν β β experiments in terms of its production, transportation, and storage. Ar exposure to cosmic rays at sea-level is simulated using Geant4 for a given cosmic ray muon, neutron, and proton energy spectrum. We report the simulated cosmogenic production rates of 39Ar, 42Ar, and other long-lived isotopes at sea-level from fast neutrons, high energy muons, and high energy protons. Total production rates of 938.53/kg A r day and 5.81 × 10−3/kg A r day for 39Ar and 42Ar are found from our simulation. Utilizing these production rates, we set a time limit of 954 days constrained by the production of 39Ar for UAr to be on the surface before it compromises the sensitivity for a dark matter experiment. Similarly, a time limit of 1702 days constrained by the production of 42Ar is found for a 0 ν β β experiment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Finding unequivocal evidence of dark matter interactions in a particle detector is a major goal of research in physics. Liquid argon time projection chambers offer a path to probe Weakly Interacting Massive Particles scattering cross sections on nuclei down to the so-called neutrino floor, in a mass range from a few GeV to hundreds of TeV. Based on the successful operation of the DarkSide-50 detector at LNGS, a new and more sensitive experiment, DarkSide-20k, has been designed and is now under construction. A thorough understanding of the DarkSide-50 detector response and, therefore, of all types of events observed in the detector, is essential for the optimal design of the new experiment. In this article, we report on a specific set of events, namely, standard two-pulse scintillation–ionization signals with a third small amplitude pulse, occurring within the 440 μ s data acquisition window of standard events. Some of these events are due to the photoionization of the TPC cathode. We compare our results with those published by collaborations using liquid xenon time projection chambers, which observed a similar phenomenon, and, in particular, with a recent paper by the LUX Collaboration (D.S. Akerib et al. Phys.Rev.D 102, 092004 (2020)) From the measured rate of these events, we estimate for the first time the quantum efficiency of the tetraphenyl butadiene deposited on the DarkSide-50 cathode at wavelengths of around 128 nm, in liquid argon. Also, both experiments observe events likely related to the photoionization of impurities in the liquid. The probability of photoelectron emission per unit length turns out to be an order of magnitude lower in DarkSide-50 than in LUX. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
