The aim of this article is to improve the performance of DBD excimer lamps systems for UV production. Within this framework, our approach considers two distinct directions: the geometric dimensions of the double-barrier lamp bulb and the characteristics of the power supply. To explore these directions, a sampling of 19 bulbs of different geometries is considered, and a specially designed power supply is used, capable of controlling the shape (duration and magnitude) and frequency of current pulses injected into the plasma. A dedicated test bench, including a supervisory program that drives the power supply and collects system performance data, is used to perform parametric sweeps and guarantee measurement repeatability: the set of electrical parameters is fully explored for each lamp, and each experiment is characterized by UV emission performance and electrical generator operating conditions. Multiquadric response surfaces, used to format the results of this multi-variable exploration, reveal the most efficient directions for system optimization: increasing gas volume and, at a given operating frequency, providing the shortest possible current pulses with high amplitude can increase both UV emission and conversion efficiency. Ultraviolet (UV) damage is closely related to skin photoaging and many skin diseases, including dermatic tumors. N6-methyladenosine (m6A) modification is an important epigenetic regulatory mechanism. However, the role of m6A methylation in apoptosis induced by repeated UV irradiation has not been characterized. To explore m6A methylation changes and regulatory mechanisms in the repeated UV-induced skin damage process, especially apoptosis. HaCaT cells and BALB/c-Nu nude mice were exposed to repeated UVB/UVA+UVB irradiation. Colorimetry and flow cytometry were used to measure cellular viability and apoptosis. m6A-modified genes were detected via colorimetry and methylated RNA immunoprecipitation (MeRIP) sequencing. Methyltransferases and demethylases were detected via RT-PCR, western blotting and immunohistochemistry. Transfection of siRNA and plasmid was performed to knock down or overexpress the selected genes. After UVB irradiation, 861 m6A peaks were increased and 425 m6A peaks were decreased in HaCaT cells. The differentially modified genes were enriched in apoptosis-related pathways. The m6A demethylase FTO was decreased in both HaCaT cells and mouse skin after UV damage. Overexpressing FTO could improve cell viability, inhibit apoptosis and decrease RNA-m6A methylation, including LPCAT3-m6A, which increase LPCAT3 expression, cell viability promotion and apoptosis inhibition. Our study identified the cell m6A methylation change lists after repeated UVB irradiation, and revealed that FTO and LPCAT3 play key roles in the m6A methylation pathogenesis of UV-induced skin cell apoptosis. The commercialization of fabrics dyed with natural pigments is limited by their inadequate color intensity and low colorfastness to washing and light. To resolve these issues and improve the uptake and durability of natural dyes, textile fabrics are often irradiated with ultraviolet (UV) light, which enhances the reactivity of organic substrates. In this study, wool and cotton fabrics were pretreated with UV radiation, followed by an exhaustion treatment with the spent coffee extract derived from agricultural waste. These fabrics were then examined for changes in color, mechanical properties, and functionality. The results revealed that UV irradiation enhanced the reactivity of wool and cotton fibers, thus improving their affinity toward the constituents of the spent coffee extract. Consequently, when natural dyes were applied to these pretreated fabrics, their color intensity and functional properties improved, but their tensile strength decreased because of UV irradiation. To my best knowledge, this study is the first into the impact of UV irradiation on both the coloration of textiles and their health-related properties when finished with an extract derived from agricultural waste. This study aims to investigate the impact of facial-aging app intervention on promoting safe and healthy behaviors and its influence on reducing students' UV exposure. Method Utilizing a Pretest–Posttest repeated-measures design, we developed a theory-guided web app on the WhatsApp platform, named the Sunshine and Skin Health app. This app allows users to visualize their altered faces in three stages of adolescence, middle age, and old age based on sun protection behavior. The intervention continued within WhatsApp, incorporating 27 health messages grounded in the PMT theory, eight educational files, and a skin cancer video clip. The primary outcome is the change in sun protection behavior between the two groups (intervention and control) immediately after the intervention (T2) and the secondary outcome is the change in sun protection behavior between the two groups at 3 months follow-up (T3). The data are analyzed in SPSS 22 and a significance level of 0.05 is considered. Results The results revealed no significant difference between the two groups before the intervention. However, in the intervention group, there were significant differences in the utilization of sunglasses, hats, and sunscreen in the last month, as well as sunscreen reapplication after washing their hands and face, both immediately after the intervention and at the 3-month follow-up, compared to the control group (P = 0.001). Furthermore, a significant intervention effect, time effect, and interaction effect between group and time were observed in behaviors related to using sunscreen in the last month and sunscreen reapplication after washing hands and face (P = 0.001). Specifically, the intervention group exhibited a significant difference from Time 1 to 2 and from Time 1 to 3 (p = 0.001), but no significant difference from Time 2 to 3. In contrast, the control group did not show any significant differences over time. Conclusions This study indicated that the Facial-Aging web app can effectively encourage safe behaviors in sunlight. To ensure the maintenance and sustainability of these behaviors over the long term, it is crucial to consider implementing booster sessions. Abstract Background The behavioral photosensitivity of animals could be quantified via the optomotor response (OMR), for example, and the luminous efficiency function (the range of visible light) should largely rely on the repertoire and expression of light-absorbing proteins in the retina, i.e., the opsins. In fact, the OMR under red light was suppressed in medaka lacking the red (long-wavelength sensitive [LWS]) opsin. Results We investigated the ultraviolet (UV)- or blue-light sensitivity of medaka lacking the violet (short-wavelength sensitive 1 [SWS1]) and blue (SWS2) opsins. The sws1/sws2 double or sws1/sws2/lws triple mutants were as viable as the wild type. The remaining green (rhodopsin 2 [RH2]) or red opsins were not upregulated. Interestingly, the OMR of the double or triple mutants was equivalent or even increased under UV or blue light (λ = 350, 365, or 450 nm), which demonstrated that the rotating stripes (i.e., changes in luminance) could fully be recognized under UV light using RH2 alone. The OMR test using dichromatic stripes projected onto an RGB display consistently showed that the presence or absence of SWS1 and SWS2 did not affect the equiluminant conditions. Conclusions RH2 and LWS, but not SWS1 and SWS2, should predominantly contribute to the postreceptoral processes leading to the OMR or, possibly, to luminance detection in general, as the medium-wavelength-sensitive and LWS cones, but not the SWS cones, are responsible for luminance detection in humans.

Vitamin D3 deficiency is regarded as a public health issue in Iraq, particularly during the winter. Sun exposure is the main source of vitamin D3, where the surface ultraviolet (UV) radiation plays an important role in human health. The amount of time that must be spent in the sun each day was determined for the amount of exposed skin, for all skin types, with and without sunscreen under clear sky conditions in the city of Baghdad (Long 44.375, Lat 33.375). UV index data was obtained by TEMIS satellite during the year 2021. From data analysis, we found that most days during the year were within the high level of ultraviolet radiation values in the city of Baghdad, and most of them were during the summer, where the person needed less time of exposure to sunlight to obtain vitamin D3 in the case of exposing the face and hands or the whole body. As a result, it can be concluded that the amount of UV radiation is affected by several factors: depending on latitude, day of the year, time of day and the season, body area exposed to the radiation, and use of sun protection factor. These factors influence the time of sun exposure required to initiate cutaneous vitamin D3 synthesis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Contamination Sanitization Inspection and Disinfection (CSI-D) device is a handheld fluorescence-based imaging system designed to disinfect food contact surfaces using ultraviolet-C (UVC) illumination. This study aimed to determine the optimal CSI-D parameters (i.e., UVC exposure time and intensity) for the inactivation of the following foodborne bacteria plated on non-selective media: generic Escherichia coli (indicator organism) and the pathogens enterohemorrhagic E. coli, enterotoxigenic E. coli, Salmonella enterica, and Listeria monocytogenes. Each bacterial strain was spread-plated on non-selective agar and exposed to high-intensity (10 mW/cm2) or low-intensity (5 mW/cm2) UVC for 1–5 s. Control plates were not exposed to UVC. The plates were incubated overnight at 37 °C and then enumerated. Three trials for each bacterial strain were conducted. Statistical analysis was carried out to determine if there were significant differences in bacterial growth between UVC intensities and exposure times. Overall, exposure to low or high intensity for 3–5 s resulted in consistent inhibition of bacterial growth, with reductions of 99.9–100 % for E. coli, 96.8–100 % for S. enterica, and 99.2–100 % for L. monocytogenes. The 1 s exposure time showed inconsistent results, with a 66.0–100 % reduction in growth depending on the intensity and bacterial strain. When the results for all strains within each species were combined, the 3–5 s exposure times showed significantly greater (p 0.05) in growth inhibition between the high and low UVC intensities. The results of this study show that, in pure culture conditions, exposure to UVC with the CSI-D device for ≥3 s is required to achieve consistent reduction of E. coli, S. enterica, and L. monocytogenes.

This study thoroughly explores the application of Ultraviolet (UV) water treatment technology in urban wastewater treatment and water supply in China, highlighting its crucial role in enhancing water quality safety. UV technology, with its environmentally friendly and low-carbon characteristics, is deemed more in line with the demands of sustainable development compared to traditional chemical disinfection methods. The widespread application of UV technology in urban wastewater treatment in China, particularly in the context of urban sewage treatment, is examined. However, to better promote and apply UV technology, there is a need to deepen the understanding of this technology and its application among a broad base of users and design units. The importance of gaining in-depth knowledge about the performance of UV water treatment equipment, the design calculation basis, and operational considerations, as well as the ongoing development of relevant standards, is underscored to ensure that the equipment used in projects complies with engineering design and production requirements. Furthermore, the positive trend of UV technology in the field of advanced oxidation, indicating a promising trajectory for engineering applications, is pointed out. Regarding the prospects of industrial development, a thorough analysis is conducted in the article, emphasizing the necessity for all stakeholders to collaborate and adopt a multi-level approach to promote the sustainable development and application of UV water treatment technology. This collaborative effort is crucial for providing effective safeguards for China's environment, ecology, and human health.

Yeast production wastewater is an industrial wastewater with a high organic pollutant content, and it has different adverse effects on the environment as untreated discharge. To treat this kind of wastewater with a high chemical oxygen demand (COD), advanced wastewater treatment technologies have to be used and evaluated with economic parameters for their applicability. The objective of the study was the technoeconomic optimization of ultraviolet Fenton oxidation (UV/FO) and ultraviolet electrochemical Fenton oxidation (UV/EFO) processes as a subsection of hybrid advanced-oxidation processes (AOPs) for the effective degradation of COD from ultrafiltration filtrate wastewaters, a byprocess of yeast production. In optimization studies, the influence of operating parameters such as pH, current density (CD)/Fe2+ concentration, H2O2 concentration, and economic parameters such as sludge disposal, chemical cost, electrode cost, energy cost, and total operating cost was investigated. A double-criteria optimization option has been used to maximize the COD removal efficiency and minimize the total operating cost of the processes by the response surface methodology (RSM), and parametric effects of main factors on the processes were evaluated in a detail. The optimal conditions using the UV/FO process were determined to be an initial pH of 3, Fe2+ concentration of 3.52 g/L , and H2O2 concentration of 79.76 g/L , in which the COD removal was 99.96% and the total organic carbon (TOC) removal was 76%, with a total operating cost of 16.96 $/m3 (1.73 $/kg CODrem). In the UV/EFO process, the optimum conditions were observed to be an initial pH of 3.07, current density of 5.68 mA/cm2 , and H2O2 concentration of 180.63 g/L , in which COD removal was 99% and TOC removal was 81%, with a total operating cost of 13.00 $/m3 (1.34 $/kg CODrem). Based on the obtained results, it was found that UV/FO and UV/EFO processes resulted in a considerable amount of COD removal. Almost for the same COD removal efficiency, the UV/EFO process was observed to have a lower cost in terms of sludge disposal and the chemicals used. This work investigates the impacts of structural parameters on the performances of p-GaN/AlGaN/GaN HEMT-based ultraviolet (UV) phototransistors (PTs) using Silvaco Atlas. The simulation results show that a larger Al content or greater thickness for the AlGaN barrier layer can induce a higher two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) density and produce a larger photocurrent. However, they may also lead to a larger dark current due to the incomplete depletion of the GaN channel layer. The depletion conditions with various Al contents and thicknesses of the AlGaN layer are investigated in detail, and a borderline between full depletion and incomplete depletion was drawn. An optimized structure with an Al content of 0.23 and a thickness of 14 nm is achieved for UV-PT, which exhibits a high photocurrent density of 92.11 mA/mm, a low dark current density of 7.68 × 10−10 mA/mm, and a large photo-to-dark-current ratio of over 1011 at a drain voltage of 5 V. In addition, the effects of other structural parameters, such as the thickness and hole concentration of the p-GaN layer as well as the thickness of the GaN channel layer, on the performances of the UV-PTs are also studied in this work. • Ferrate(VI)-based oxidation was proposed to mitigate membrane fouling by SGPW. • UV/Fe(VI) performed better than CaO 2 /Fe(VI) for SGPW fouling mitigation. • High-valent iron intermediates (Fe(IV)/Fe(V)) were generated by Fe(VI) activation. • Fe(IV)/Fe(V) played a major role in the CaO 2 /Fe(VI) process for pre-oxidation. • Fe(IV)/Fe(V) and •OH exhibited a synergistic effect in the UV/Fe(VI) process. Ultrafiltration (UF) is increasingly used in the pretreatment of shale gas produced water (SGPW), whereas severe membrane fouling hampers its actual operation. In this work, ferrate(VI)-based oxidation was proposed for membrane fouling alleviation in SGPW pretreatment, and the activation strategies of calcium peroxide (CaO 2) and ultraviolet (UV) were selected for comparison. The findings indicated that UV/Fe(VI) was more effective in removing fluorescent components, and the concentration of dissolved organic carbon was reduced by 24.1 %. With pretreatments of CaO 2 /Fe(VI) and UV/Fe(VI), the terminal specific membrane flux was elevated from 0.196 to 0.385 and 0.512, and the total fouling resistance diminished by 52.7 % and 76.2 %, respectively. Interfacial free energy analysis indicated that the repulsive interactions between pollutants and membrane were notably enhanced by Fe(VI)-based oxidation, thereby delaying the deposition of cake layers on the membrane surface. Quenching and probe experiments revealed that high-valent iron intermediates (Fe(IV)/Fe(V)) played significant roles in both CaO 2 /Fe(VI) and UV/Fe(VI) processes. Besides, hydroxyl radicals (•OH) were also important reactive species in the UV/Fe(VI) treatment, and the synergistic effect of Fe(IV)/Fe(V) and •OH showed a positive influence on SGPW fouling mitigation. In general, these findings establish a theoretical underpinning for the application of Fe(VI)-based oxidation for UF membrane fouling mitigation in SGPW pretreatment. Background: The use of microalgae has been emerging as a potential technology to reduce greenhouse gases and bioremediate polluted water and produce high-value products as pigments, phytohormones, biofuels, and bioactive compounds. The improvement in biomass production is a priority to make the technology implementation profitable in every application mentioned before. Methods: The present study was conducted to explore the use of microalgae from genus Chlorella and Tetradesmus for the generation of substances of interest with UV absorption capacity. A mathematical model was developed for both microalgae to characterize the production of microalgae biomass considering the effects of light intensity, temperature, and nutrient consumption. The model was programmed in MATLAB software, where the three parameters were incorporated into a single specific growth rate equation. Cannabis (Cannabis sativa) flourishes under high light intensities (LI); making it an expensive commodity to grow in controlled environments, despite its high market value. It is commonly believed that cannabis secondary metabolite levels may be enhanced both by increasing LI and exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UV). However, the sparse scientific evidence is insufficient to guide cultivators for optimizing their lighting protocols. We explored the effects of LI and UV exposure on yield and secondary metabolite composition of a high A9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) cannabis cultivar 'Meridian'. Plants were grown under short day conditions for 45 days under average canopy photosynthetic photon flux densities (PPFD, 400-700 nm) of 600, 800, and 1,000 |xmol m-2 s-1, provided by light emitting diodes (LEDs). Plants exposed to UV had PPFD of 600 ixmol m-2 s-1 plus either (1) UVA; 50 ixmol m-2 s-1 of UVA (315-400 nm) from 385 nm peak LEDs from 06:30 to 18:30 HR for 45 days or (2) UVA + UVB; a photon flux ratio of -1:1 of UVA and UVB (280-315 nm) from a fluorescent source at a photon flux density of 3.0 |xmol m-2 s-1, provided daily from 13:30 to 18:30 HR during the last 20 days of the trial. All aboveground biomass metrics were 1.3-1.5 times higher in the highest vs. lowest PPFD treatments, except inflorescence dry weight - the most economically relevant parameter - which was 1.6 times higher. Plants in the highest vs. lowest PPFD treatment also allocated relatively more biomass to inflorescence tissues with a 7% higher harvest index. There were no UV treatment effects on aboveground biomass metrics. There were also no intensity or UV treatment effects on inflorescence cannabinoid concentrations. Sugar leaves (i.e., small leaves associated with inflorescences) of plants in the UVA + UVB treatment had -30% higher THC concentrations; however, UV did not have any effect on the total THC in thesefoliar tissues. Overall, high PPFD levels can substantially increase cannabis yield, but we found no commercially relevant benefits of adding UV to indoor cannabis production. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The performance of photovoltaic systems is mostly determined by the materials used in their construction, regardless of the kind of application. We report on transparent broadband photodetectors based on p-Co3O4 and a heterojunction of n-ZnO, n-TiO2, or n-SnO2 that fits the needs of transparent optoelectronic devices. The heterojunction devices are fabricated by sputtering method. The energy band alignments are investigated with the aim of developing an efficient photodetector. The average transmittance values in the visible light range (400–800 nm) for TiO2, ZnO, and SnO2 are observed to be approximately 80%, 74%, and 66%, respectively. The current–voltage characteristics of the devices are also investigated and non-Ohmic characteristics are observed. Furthermore, a photovoltage study with post-rapid thermal processing (RTP) is carried out. It is found that enhancing the carrier lifetime is an efficient way to improve the performance of the devices. With an increased minority carrier lifetime, the transient photovoltage of the RTP-treated TiO2/Co3O4 device shows slow decay. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: To proof the feasibility of direct colour printing on 3Y-TZP using 222 nm UV-C through investigating the degree and durability of the colour changes, and testifying whether surface, mechanical and biological properties are influenced by the treatment., Methods: 222 nm UV-C light (Irradiance: 1.870 mW/cm 2 ) was used to treat 3Y-TZP for durations from 15 min to 24 h. ΔE*, TP, crystalline structure, surface morphology, S a , BFS and biological activities were investigated before and after irradiation. SPSS 28.0 was used for statistical analysis (α = 0.05)., Results: 222 nm UV-C irradiation was capable to shade white 3Y-TZP into tooth colours. With the increase of ΔE*, TP decreased, such that the longer the irradiation time, the higher the ΔE* (logarithmic relationship) and lower the TP. Despite the induced optical changes being prone to fade, the process can be predicted by inversely proportional relationships between ΔE*, TP and the testing points. The treated surface exhibited enhanced hydrophilicity, while the recovery phenomenon was observed. Other properties were not altered by the treatment., Significance: This is the seminal study demonstrating the feasibility of direct colour printing on 3Y-TZP using 222 nm UV-C. The new relationship between the colour centre and E g of 3Y-TZP was established, whereas the induced optical changes were stabilised after a certain period and were highly predictable by controlling the irradiation periods. The irradiation was only correlated to the electron excitation and oxygen vacancies, and would not lead to any changes of other properties. Plants are often simultaneously stressed by both UV radiation and phosphorus (P) deficiency in agricultural ecosystems. Coordinated responses and adaptations to these stressors are critical for plant growth, development, and survival. However, the underlying molecular response and adaptation mechanisms in plants remain elusive. Here, we show that plants use a reciprocal antagonistic strategy in response to UV radiation and P deficiency. UV radiation inhibited P-starvation response (PSR) processes and disrupted phosphate (Pi) homeostasis by suppressing the function of PHOSPHATE STARVATION RESPONSE PROTEINS (PHRs), the Pi central regulators. Conversely, P availability modulated the plant UV tolerance and the expression level of UV radiation response (URR) genes in a PHR-dependent manner. Therefore, reducing P supply or increasing PHRs activities can improve the tolerance to UV stress in rice. Moreover, this antagonistic interaction is conserved across various plant species. Furthermore, our meta-analysis showed that the increase in global UV radiation over the last forty years may reduce crop P-utilization efficiency worldwide. Aims: The dosages and efficacy of 14 ultraviolet (UV) decontamination technologies were measured against a SARS-CoV-2 surrogate virus that was dried onto different materials for laboratory and field testing.Methods and results: A live enveloped, ribonucleic acid (RNA) virus surrogate for SARS-CoV-2 was dried on stainless steel 304 (SS304), Navy Top Coat-painted SS304 (NTC), cardboard, polyurethane, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) materials at > 8.0 log10 plaque-forming units (PFU) per test coupon. The coupons were then exposed to UV radiation during both laboratory and field testing. Commercial and prototype UV-emitting devices were measured for efficacy: four handheld devices, three room/surface-disinfecting machines, five air disinfection devices, and two larger custom-made machines. UV device dosages ranged from 0.01 to 729 mJ cm−2. The antiviral efficacy among the different UV devices ranged from no decontamination up to nearly achieving sterilization. Importantly, cardboard required far greater dosage than SS304.Conclusion: Enormous variability in dosage and efficacy was measured among the different UV devices. Porous materials limit the utility of UV decontamination.Significance and impact of the study: UV devices have wide variability in dosages, efficacy, hazards, and UV output over time, indicating that each UV device needs independent technical measurement and assessment for product development prior to and during use.

Cannabis (Cannabis sativa) flourishes under high light intensities (LI); making it an expensive commodity to grow in controlled environments, despite its high market value. It is commonly believed that cannabis secondary metabolite levels may be enhanced both by increasing LI and exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UV). However, the sparse scientific evidence is insufficient to guide cultivators for optimizing their lighting protocols. We explored the effects of LI and UV exposure on yield and secondary metabolite composition of a high Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) cannabis cultivar ‘Meridian’. Plants were grown under short day conditions for 45 days under average canopy photosynthetic photon flux densities (PPFD, 400–700 nm) of 600, 800, and 1,000 μmol m–2 s–1, provided by light emitting diodes (LEDs). Plants exposed to UV had PPFD of 600 μmol m–2 s–1 plus either (1) UVA; 50 μmol m–2 s–1 of UVA (315–400 nm) from 385 nm peak LEDs from 06:30 to 18:30 HR for 45 days or (2) UVA + UVB; a photon flux ratio of ≈1:1 of UVA and UVB (280–315 nm) from a fluorescent source at a photon flux density of 3.0 μmol m–2 s–1, provided daily from 13:30 to 18:30 HR during the last 20 days of the trial. All aboveground biomass metrics were 1.3–1.5 times higher in the highest vs. lowest PPFD treatments, except inflorescence dry weight – the most economically relevant parameter – which was 1.6 times higher. Plants in the highest vs. lowest PPFD treatment also allocated relatively more biomass to inflorescence tissues with a 7% higher harvest index. There were no UV treatment effects on aboveground biomass metrics. There were also no intensity or UV treatment effects on inflorescence cannabinoid concentrations. Sugar leaves (i.e., small leaves associated with inflorescences) of plants in the UVA + UVB treatment had ≈30% higher THC concentrations; however, UV did not have any effect on the total THC in thesefoliar tissues. Overall, high PPFD levels can substantially increase cannabis yield, but we found no commercially relevant benefits of adding UV to indoor cannabis production.

Although the reuse of reclaimed water is one of the ways to solve the water crisis, secondary effluents still contain opportunistic pathogens that pose a potential threat to human health. Herein, we use slow filtration-disinfection as an advanced treatment to explore the removal of opportunistic pathogens such asLegionellaorPseudomonas aeruginosa. We show that, at the same filtration rate, removal is more effective (1) with aerobic heterotrophic biofilm rather than with denitrification or nitrification ones, (2) at the slowest filtration rate of 5 cm/h , and (3) when pathogens adhere to particles. According to the opportunistic pathogens content in the water after adding the disinfectant, the optimal dosage of sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) (8.0 mg/L , calculated as available chlorine concentration) and ultraviolet (UV) (40 mJ/cm2) was determined. To remove opportunistic pathogens, NaClO disinfection in slow filtration water is more effective at lower pH and higher temperature, whereas UV disinfection in slow leaching water is more effective at lower pH and turbidity. Combining slow filtration and disinfection was effective in removing opportunistic pathogens in the secondary effluent, and UV radiation was more effective than NaClO. Removal rates of Legionella and P. aeruginosa by UV exposure were 98.6% and 98.1%, respectively. Although Pseudomonas, Acidovorax, Sphingomonas, and Lactobacillus were also present in the other types of biofilms, they were more abundant in aerobic heterotrophic biofilm and had some inhibitory effect on opportunistic pathogens. Finally, turbidity, but not dissolved organic carbon (DOC), was correlated with opportunistic pathogens in water. In summary, the combined process of slow filtration-disinfection can effectively reduce the content of opportunistic pathogens in the secondary effluent and ensure microbiological safety. The p-GaN/N-Mg0.3Zn0.7O:In heterojunction photodiode is demonstrated in this study. The p-type GaN is grown using a hydride vapor phase epitaxy (HVPE) method and the n-type Mg0.3Zn0.7O:In thin film is deposited using a mist atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition (MAPCVD) method. The p-GaN/N-Mg0.3Zn0.7O:In photodiode shows a significant rectification ratio of $2.3 \times 10^{6}$ and high maximum responsivity of 0.93 A/W to UV-B. The significant UV-B to UV-A and UV-A to visible rejection ratios are found in the photodiode, which suggests that the p-GaN/N-Mg0.3Zn0.7O:In photodiode is capable of identifying visible light, UV-A, and UV-B. Simple Summary: Pest monitoring using traps is a key component of integrated pest management. For several insects, trapping is achieved using visual or olfactory stimuli. Although the combination of both is supposed to provide higher efficacy, this has often been overlooked in trap design. Through laboratory bioassays and field experiments we evaluated the use of UV-A and visible light in combination with olfactory stimuli to improve trapping of the invasive brown marmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae). Our results may be useful for the improvement of monitoring strategies for early pest detection. Additionally, the higher efficacy of the multimodal traps would allow their use in attract-and-kill or push–pull strategies within integrated pest management. Capture strategies for the brown marmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), are challenging. Here we developed and evaluated a multimodal trap which combines visual and olfactory stimuli. Visual stimuli consisted of LEDs emitting UV-A and visible light. Olfactory stimuli were comprised of the synthetic aggregation pheromone and odours from trapped H. halys individuals. Stink bug attraction at different wavelengths was evaluated in laboratory two-choice bioassays, and different prototypes of the trap were tested in 2021 in natural, agricultural, and urban settings. Traps with a combination of UV-A and blue or green visible wavelengths provided higher H. halys attraction (up to ~8-fold) compared to traditional sticky or small pyramidal traps. The concurrent presence of synthetic pheromone and LED had a synergistic effect on H. halys positive phototaxis. Over the last years, novel disinfection processes for municipal wastewater treatment plant effluents have attracted attention from researchers. This issue was because of the global demand for reusable water. There are critical concerns about conventional disinfection processes, which cause more serious problems, that is, the effluent quality fluctuations and existing contaminants of emerging concern in the effluent that spread into the environment. In the present study, a primary analysis has been accomplished for the degradation of amoxicillin using the removal of emerging pharmaceutical contaminants. In this regard, sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs) are very efficient for disinfection purposes and generate highly reactive free radicals. The present study describes the advances in disinfection methods based on SR-AOPs activation by ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Besides, the results of the most relevant papers are analyzed to show the widespread use of UV-AOPs as a novel disinfection technology for a broad class of contaminants. Also, sulfate radicals (SO4 •-) are generated from UV-peroxymonosulfate (UV/PMS) and UV-persulfate (UV/PS). The achieved results have been compared with other processes. The findings demonstrated that the UV/PMS process was more effective than the other mentioned processes. Also, fecal coliforms reduction and amoxicillin removal efficiencies were 99.99 (e.g., the total coliforms reached less than 400 MPN consistently in 100 mL) and 94% ± 3%, respectively. Low pressure membrane takes a great role in hydraulic fracturing wastewater (HFW), while membrane fouling is a critical issue for the stable operation of microfiltration (MF). This study focused on fouling mitigation by sodium percarbonate (SPC) oxidation, activated by ultraviolet (UV) and ferrous ion (Fe(II)). The higher the concentration of oxidizer, the better the anti-fouling performance of MF membrane. Unlike severe MF fouling without oxidation (17.26 L/(m2·h)), UV/SPC and Fe(II)/SPC under optimized dosage improved the final flux to 740 and 1553 L/(m2·h), respectively, and the latter generated Fe(III) which acted as a coagulant. Fe(II)/SPC oxidation enabled a shift in fouling mechanism from complete blocking to cake filtration, while UV/SPC oxidation changed it to standard blockage. UV/SPC oxidation was stronger than Fe(II)/SPC oxidation in removing UV 254 and fluorescent organics for higher oxidizing capacity, but the opposite was noted for DOC removal. The deposited foulants on membrane surface after oxidation decreased by at least 88% compared to untreated HFW. Correlation analysis showed that UV 254, DOC and organic fraction were key parameters responsible for membrane fouling (correlation coefficient＞0.80), oxidizing capacity and turbidity after oxidation were also important parameters. These results provide new insights for fouling control during the HFW treatment. Combined sewer overflows (CSOs) introduce microbial contaminants into the receiving water bodies, thereby posing risks to public health. This study systematically investigated the disinfection performance and mechanisms of the combined process of ultraviolet and peracetic acid (UV/PAA) in CSOs with selecting Escherichia coli (E. coli) as a target microbial contaminant. The UV/PAA process exhibited superior performance in inactivating E. coli in simulated CSOs compared with UV, PAA, and UV/H 2 O 2 processes. Increasing the PAA dosage greatly enhanced the disinfection efficiency, while turbidity and organic matter hindered the inactivation performance. Singlet oxygen (1O 2), hydroxyl (•OH) and organic radicals (RO•) contributed to the inactivation of E. coli , with •OH and RO• playing the prominent role. Variations of intracellular reactive oxygen species, malondialdehyde, enzymes activities, DNA contents and biochemical compositions of E. coli cells suggested that UV/PAA primarily caused oxidative damage to intracellular molecules rather than the damage to the lipids of the cell membrane, therefore effectively limited the regrowth of E. coli. Additionally, the UV/PAA process displayed an outstanding performance in disinfecting actual raw CSOs, achieving a 2.90-log inactivation of total bacteria after reaction for 4 min. Featured Application: The Adtec SteriPlas is a CE-approved gas plasma medical device with proven anti-bacterial efficacy. The SteriPlas has been used to treat complex and chronic conditions by accelerating healing whilst giving no side effects to the patients. The cold gas plasma technology has been demonstrated to manage infections without the need for antibiotics. Problematic wounds treated include diabetic foot ulcers, which are considered one of the worst wound types due to infection with biofilms. The plasma technology has also been deployed in the field of dermatology to target actinic keratoses, which is a challenging skin condition where conventional therapies often bear undesirable side effects; accelerated healing has again been shown with no side effects. The safety and effectiveness of plasma devices are of crucial importance for medical applications. This study presents the novel design of an atmospheric plasma torch (SteriPlas) and its characterisation. The SteriPlas was characterised to ascertain whether it is safe for application on human skin. The emission spectrum discharged from the SteriPlas was shown to be the same as the emission from the MicroPlaSter Beta. The UV emitted from the SteriPlas was measured, and the effective irradiance was calculated. The effective irradiance enabled the determination of the maximum UV exposure limits, which were shown to be over two hours: significantly longer than the current two-minute treatment time. The use of an extraction system with a higher flow rate appears to reduce slightly the effective irradiance at the treatment area. The NOx and ozone emissions were recorded for both SteriPlas configurations. The NOx levels were shown to be orders of magnitude lower than their safety limits. The ozone emissions were shown to be safe 25 mm from the SteriPlas cage. A discussion of how safety standards differ from one regulatory body to another is given. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An image sensor based on wide band gap silicon carbide (SiC) has the merits of high temperature operation and ultraviolet (UV) detection. To realize a SiC-based image sensor the challenge of opto-electronic on-chip integration of SiC photodetectors and digital electronic circuits must be addressed. Here, we demonstrate a novel SiC image sensor based on our in-house bipolar technology. The sensing part has 256 (16×16) pixels. The digital circuit part for row and column selection contains two 4-to-16 decoders and one 8-bit counter. The digital circuits are designed in transistor-transistor logic (TTL). The entire circuit has 1959 transistors. It is the first demonstration of SiC opto-electronic on-chip integration. The function of the image sensor up to 400 °C has been verified by taking photos of the spatial patterns masked from UV light. The image sensor would play a significant role in UV photography, which has important applications in astronomy, clinics, combustion detection and art.

This work investigates the impacts of structural parameters on the performances of p-GaN/AlGaN/GaN HEMT-based ultraviolet (UV) phototransistors (PTs) using Silvaco Atlas. The simulation results show that a larger Al content or greater thickness for the AlGaN barrier layer can induce a higher two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) density and produce a larger photocurrent. However, they may also lead to a larger dark current due to the incomplete depletion of the GaN channel layer. The depletion conditions with various Al contents and thicknesses of the AlGaN layer are investigated in detail, and a borderline between full depletion and incomplete depletion was drawn. An optimized structure with an Al content of 0.23 and a thickness of 14 nm is achieved for UV-PT, which exhibits a high photocurrent density of 92.11 mA/mm, a low dark current density of 7.68 × 10−10 mA/mm, and a large photo-to-dark-current ratio of over 1011 at a drain voltage of 5 V. In addition, the effects of other structural parameters, such as the thickness and hole concentration of the p-GaN layer as well as the thickness of the GaN channel layer, on the performances of the UV-PTs are also studied in this work.

The objective of this study was to compare the rate of implant stability development of as-received and photofunctionalized dental implants in regular and complex cases. Materials and Methods: Forty-nine implants (24 as-received and 25 photofunctionalized) placed in regular or complex cases (simultaneous guided bone regeneration, sinus elevation, or fresh extraction sockets) were studied. Photofunctionalization was performed by ultraviolet (UV) treatment of implants for 15 minutes using a photo device immediately prior to placement, and the generation of superhydrophilicity was confirmed. Implant stability was evaluated by measuring the implant stability quotient (ISQ) at placement (ISQ1) and at stage-two surgery (ISQ2). The rate of implant stability development was evaluated by calculating the osseointegration speed index (OSI), defined as the ISQ increase per month ([ISQ2-ISQ1]/healing time in months). The percentage of innate bone support at placement was evaluated clinically and radiographically. Results: The average OSI was considerably greater for photofunctionalized implants (3.7 ± 2.9) than for as-received implants (0.0 ± 1.0). The OSI in complex cases was 4.2 ± 3.2 for photofunctionalized implants and 0.2 ± 0.9 for as-received implants. The OSI in cases with simultaneous sinus elevation was 5.5 ± 3.5 for photofunctionalized implants and 0.2 ± 1.1 for as-received implants. Photofunctionalized implants showed significantly higher ISQ2 values than as-received implants. Photofunctionalized implant ISQ2 values were greater than 60, regardless of primary stability and innate bone support at placement. In multivariate analysis including the effects of photofunctionalization, age and sex of patients, and diameter and length of implants, photofunctionalization showed the strongest influence on the OSI for both regular and complex cases, while other factors influenced the OSI only in certain conditions. Conclusion: Photofunctionalization accelerated the rate and enhanced the final level of implant stability development compared with as-received implants, particularly for implants placed into poor-quality bone and other complex cases. In this article, a 4H-SiC metal-insulator-semiconductor-insulator-metal (MISIM) ultraviolet (UV) photodetector (PD) with a normal working temperature up to 550 °C, has been successfully fabricated and characterized for the first time. At 550 °C, the dark current of our fabricated MISIM remains at ~0.2 nA level and a record photo-to-dark current ratio (PDCR) of 62.7 is achieved at a reverse bias voltage of −15 V. Under 275 nm illumination, high responsivity (R) of 0.23 and 0.54 A/W have been achieved at room temperature (RT) and 550 °C, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the best result reported for high-temperature UV detectors based on the 4H-SiC. This work is significant for developing high-temperature 4H-SiC-based UV PDs. Photoexcitation of endogenous photosensitizers (ePS) in the human skin by sunlight culminates with the formation of electronic excited states, such as triplet excited states, singlet oxygen, and a variety of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, either free radicals or two-electron oxidants. Considering the endogenous skin photosensitizers, melanin is the most abundant and is involved in photoprotection mechanisms, while lipofuscin is an unintentionally pigment accumulated during cell aging or oxidative stress. Both pigments severely increase the phototoxicity of visible light (VL) to skin cells. In the presence of these pigments, VL induces significant oxidative damage in nucleic acids, lipids and proteins, triggering regulated and unregulated cell death mechanisms. Besides, there is accumulation of premutagenic DNA lesions, indicated by the formamidopyrimidine glycosylase (Fpg)- and endonuclease III (Endo III)-sensitive sites in the nuclear DNA. As consequence of the photoinduced oxidative damage, skin cells, under the stimulus of VL release pro-inflammatory cytokines and metalloproteinases, prompting further cell death and skin aging. In this review we describe the photochemical properties of both melanin and lipofuscin pigments and discuss the consequences of their accumulation in terms of the phototoxicity of VL to the human skin.

Purpose: Skin cancer is the most common, yet oftentimes preventable, cancer type in the United States. Exposure to ultraviolet radiation from sunlight is the most prominent environmental risk factor for skin cancer. Besides environmental exposure, demographic characteristics such as race, age, and socioeconomic status may make some groups more vulnerable. An exploratory spatial clustering method is described for identifying clusters of vulnerability to skin cancer incidence and mortality based on composite indices, which combine data from environmental and demographic risk factors.Methods: Based on county-level ultraviolet data and demographic risk factors, two vulnerability indices for skin cancer were generated using an additive percentile rank approach. With these indices, univariate local Moran's I spatial autocorrelation identified significant clusters, or hotspots, of neighboring counties with high overall vulnerability indices. Clusters were identified separately for skin cancer incidence and mortality.Results: Counties with high vulnerabilities were spatially distributed across the United States in a pattern that generally increased to the South and West. Clusters of counties with high skin cancer incidence vulnerability were mostly observed in Utah and Colorado, even with highly conservative levels of significance. Meanwhile, clusters for skin cancer mortality vulnerability were observed in southern Alabama and west Florida as well as across north Alabama, north Georgia and up through the Tennessee-North Carolina area.Conclusions: Future skin cancer research and screening initiatives may use these innovative composite vulnerability indices and identified clusters to better target resources based on anticipated risk from underlying demographic and environmental factors. This article reported about the ultraviolet (UV) radiation effect on the resonance frequency response of a AT-cut piezoelectric quartz crystal. A large resonance frequency upshift was observed when the quartz crystal was irradiated by UV light of 355-nm wavelength using a Q-switched pulsed Nd:YVO4 UV laser. The dynamic frequency response behavior was systematically investigated by illuminating the quartz crystal with UV light in which the UV intensity was varied with time in staircase- and linear pulse-shaped patterns. From the experimental analysis, we measured the limit of detection and the sensitivity of the quartz crystal, which are about 0.5 mW/cm2 and 0.706 Hz/(mW/cm2), respectively. For a constant UV irradiation, a moderate response (<10 s) and recovery (<10 s) times were achieved during the on and off cycles of the UV light. The short-term repeatability and maximum operating limit of AT-cut quartz crystal were also further studied upon exposure to UV light with different intensities. In this work, we not only demonstrate the impact of UV irradiation on quartz crystal but also discuss the mechanism of upshift in resonance frequency upon exposure to UV light. We report high-performance homojunction GaN avalanche photodiodes (APDs) grown on a low-defect GaN substrate and fabricated with an ion-implantation isolation method. High-quality p-i-n GaN layers were grown using metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD), and an effective device isolation method using optimized nitrogen ion implantation was developed to provide significant leakage current suppression on the etched mesa sidewalls. Fabricated GaN APDs showed an ultralow dark current density < 10−9 A/cm2 up to 50% of the avalanching breakdown voltage region and achieved a photocurrent gain of >106 at a reverse bias of 71.5 V under deep-ultraviolet (DUV) illumination at λ = 280 nm. A further temperature-dependent study of the dark current indicated that a trap-assisted tunneling process predominates the leakage current component that also contributes to the carrier multiplication process near the avalanching breakdown. Designing of single-mode ZnO nanowire laser has been achieved. Studying its properties has also been considered. Analysis of single-mode rate equations indicates that the laser has threshold current of 53 mA, the output power of 30 mW at bias current of 70 mA and the slope efficiency around 1.77 mW/mA for the output power from both mirrors. The critical diameter for nanowire has been calculated and it is found to be 128 nm. The number of nanowire rods through designed area of dimensions (21µm×21µm) has also been calculated. The cavity of nanowire laser is (F-P). The results are compared with some experimental work of ZnO nanowire lasers and good agreement is found.

Sensitive solar-blind ultraviolet (UV) photodetectors are important to various military and civilian applications, such as flame sensors, missile interception, biological analysis, and UV radiation monitoring below the ozone hole. In this paper, a solar-blind UV photodetector based on a buried-gate graphene field-effect transistor (GFET) decorated with titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles (NPs) was demonstrated. Under the illumination of a 325-nm laser (spot size ~2 μm) with a total power of 0.35 μW, a photoresponsivity as high as 118.3 A/W was obtained, at the conditions of zero gate bias and a source-drain bias voltage of 0.2 V. This photoresponsivity is over 600 times higher than that of a recently reported solar-blind UV photodetector based on graphene/vertical Ga2O3 nanowire array heterojunction (0.185 A/W). Experiments showed that the photoresponsivity of the TiO2 NPs decorated GFET photodetectors can be further enhanced by increasing the source-drain bias voltage or properly tuning the gate bias voltage. Furthermore, the photoresponse time of the TiO2 NPs decorated GFET photodetectors can also be tuned by the source-drain bias and gate bias. This study paves a simple and feasible way to fabricate highly sensitive, cost-efficient, and integrable solar-blind UV photodetectors.

Background: Establishing a noninvasive method to estimate skin damage immediately after ultraviolet (UV) exposure is required to minimize the anticipated severe symptoms triggered by early phase UV‐induced reactions in the skin. To develop a suitable method, we focused on ultraweak photon emission (UPE) immediately after UV exposure to characterize the relationship of UPE to skin photodamage caused by the UV exposure. Materials and Methods: Analysis of the correlation between UV‐induced UPE and erythema formation characterized by skin redness was conducted in a clinical study. To clarify the source of UPE, time‐dependent lipid oxidation was analyzed in human epidermal keratinocytes in vitro using a fluorescence indicator as well as the lipid hydroperoxide (LPO) assay. Results: The average amount of UV‐induced long‐lasting UPE per second, especially from 1 to 3 minutes compared to other time periods after the UV radiation, increased in a dose‐dependent manner and was highly correlated with the intensity of cutaneous redness 24 hours after UV exposure. In addition, cellular examinations elucidated that both the long‐lasting UPE signals and the increased amounts of LPO 2 minutes after UV radiation were significantly suppressed by Trolox (a vitamin E derivative), which has been shown to inhibit UV‐induced erythema formation in human skin. Conclusion: Long‐lasting UPE generated between 1 and 3 minutes immediately after UV exposure, which is associated with LPO production, is a valuable indicator to estimate and/or avoid severe cutaneous photodamage.
