The aim of the present study was to analyze the response to exposure to pollutants (trace elements and organic pollutants) using biomarkers (micronucleated cells and glutathione S-transferase and catalase activity) in uçá crab Ucides cordatus. The study was carried out at four sites: Cacha Prego (CP) and Ponta Grossa (PG), areas with low anthropic activity; and Ilha de Maré (IM) and Pitinga (PT), areas affected by industrial activity. At each site, soil and crab samples were collected to analyze the contents of potentially toxic elements (total concentration and chemical partitioning of trace elements), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Both total concentrations and geochemical fractions of Cu, Zn, and Ni in soils were significantly higher in IM. Likewise, higher reactive Pb contents were observed in mangroves both in IM and in PG. Values above quality limits were observed for organic pollutants (PAHs) in soils from CP and PT, while PCB contents were below the maximum permissible levels. Metals in crabs also showed spatial variations, with higher Cu concentrations in all tissues in IM and PT and higher Ni concentrations in hepatopancreas in PT during the dry season. PAH values in crabs did not show spatial variations; however, crustaceans with contents above maximum limits in their muscle tissue were found in CP. Crabs from the Baia de Todos Santos showed different responses in biomarker expression, with higher enzymatic activity and greater numbers of micronucleated cells in crabs from IM, suggesting oxidative stress and genotoxicity in this mangrove forest. O presente artigo visa descrever a prática de captura do caranguejo-uçá realizada através do gancho, uma ferramenta artesanal, utilizada no município de Marapanim/PA; e verificar as perspectivas socioambientais dos extrativistas acerca dessa atividade. O estudo possui abordagem socioantropológica, realizada através de entrevistas semiestruturadas e conversas informais, com campo realizado em 2021, em colaboração com especialistas na captura de moluscos e crustáceos nos manguezais marapanienses. O argumento central está voltado na perspectiva de um extrativista acerca da forma de captura do caranguejo-uçá. Como resultados, destacamos duas técnicas tradicionais de captura, a técnica do gancho e a técnica de captura no braço, práticas de subsistência que contribuem para a conservação, renovação dos estoques pesqueiros e a comercialização.

This study analyzed field and acclimatized (7 days) mangrove Ucides cordatus crabs from polluted and unpolluted environments to compare their HSP70 levels. The animals were cryo-anesthetized and dissected. Gills (anterior and posterior) and hepatopancreas were collected to evaluate total proteins and HSP70 levels using ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay) method. The acclimatized animals from polluted environments showed higher HSP70 levels in the hepatopancreas than field animals. Results showed higher HSP70 levels in laboratory animals from the polluted environment than in field animals in the posterior gills. The regulation to decrease the damage caused by the environment and the acclimatization process may not be sufficient to stabilize physiological responses, especially in animals from polluted environments.

Abstract In 2015, a serious environmental disaster occurred at ULTRACARGO - Aratu S/A Terminal (Cubatão, SP) causing a long-lasting, large-scale, fire that resulted in the release of various chemical pollutants, including those used to contain the fire. These pollutants affected adjacent regions and the innermost area of the Santos-São Vicente Estuarine System, requiring the assessment of environmental quality in two mangrove areas post-disaster (2016). This assessment considered biomarkers for the species including population density, structure, and cytogenotoxicity. The population structure and cytotoxicity of Ucides cordatus (Linnaeus, 1763) only changed slightly from pre-disaster (2013) to post-disaster (2016), as a consequence of the greater resilience and biological flexibility of this crab to environmental stress caused by pollutants. We recommend continuous monitoring be conducted using this species endemic to the mangroves of the study site, as this will make it possible to assess the magnitude of the chronic environmental impacts of the accident. In addition, it could guide environmental agencies in damage mitigation or in the quantification of possible future impacts.

Despite its ecological and economic importance, there are few experiments in Brazil applying stable isotope tools to trophic crab classification, and even fewer considering females in the reproductive period. Females have different energy demands than males; studies examining C and N can reveal details regarding the differences. Hence, the present study is the first analysis of the δ 13C, δ 15N, and the C/N ratio in ovigerous females of two populations from Southeastern Brazil (Caceribu River - Guanabara Bay and Gargaú mangrove - Paraiba do Sul River secondary estuary). The Caceribu mangrove is larger and is located in one of the most impacted bays in the world. In the Paraiba do Sul River region, the mangrove swamp is about ten times smaller, has a substantially lower population in the surrounding area, and is more influenced by agricultural activities. The δ 13C analysis confirmed mangrove leaves as their main food source. The significant δ 13C variation between the Guanabara and Paraiba do Sul estuary populations can be related to differences in food availability and nutritional value. However, the δ 15N values can be related to the ingestion of other food items during the breeding season as well as the influence of anthropogenic mangrove degradation. At both study sites, the δ15N values were higher than those observed in other mangrove crab populations and other herbivorous species. Significant (p < 0.05) isotopic differences were found among populations, suggesting variations in biogeochemical cycles that may be related to different environmental conditions between the sites.

Intensive harvesting of the mangrove crab Ucides cordatus provides subsistence for food and main or additional income to many inhabitants of mangrove areas in Northern Brazil. In order to better understand the spatial patterns of use of this natural resource as basis for sustainable resource-management, we used a combination of GPS-tracking, field observations, semi-structured interviews and participatory mapping with crab-collectors. We quantified daily working hours, traveling distance and time to, as well as collecting time inside, the patches where crabs are collected. Based on preliminary findings for three different types of transportation to the fishing grounds, we conclude that crab-collectors in our study area act in accordance with the central place optimal foraging concept in that they invest more time in traveling to areas with higher catch. We hold these findings will prove relevant for sustainably managing the use of mangrove crabs as natural resource. The parallel occurrence of different collecting-behaviours possibly releases pressure from crab stocks in the potentially depleting fishing grounds adjacent to villages, and thus, may render crab-collecting in these areas more sustainable. Detailed studies are needed to quantify the catch from different mangrove areas and to make these data useful for the sustainable management of natural resource-exploitation in mangroves. An abundant population of Ucides cordatus swamp crabs is present at Lameirão Ecological Station (Brazil), a tropical ecosystem man-made with discharges of domestic, industrial and agricultural pollutants. Concentrations of heavy metals in water, sediment and muscle tissues, gills, hepatopancreas and exoskeleton present in crustaceans were analyzed. The results showed variations in the concentrations of all metals according to precipitation, tide and physicochemical factors. This fact possibly influenced the results of bioconcentration (BFC > 1), indicating a tendency of bioaccumulation according to environmental conditions. We also found a high accumulation of metals in female specimens. However, regardless of gender, we found a reduction in metal concentrations in all tissues analyzed during the period of ecdysis. In this study, we highlight the ecological role of U. cordatus in mangrove ecosystems and its importance in transferring pollutants to the upper trophic levels of the mangrove community, and even to man. Abstract Crustacean decapod larvae have developed several adaptations to maximize their survival, including swimming behavior. Swimming improves larvae dispersal and contributes to their response to environmental stresses, including variations in abiotic factors, presence of predators, and search for food. Data on larval behavior can also assist in studies on conservation and in species management in aquaculture. Unfortunately, swimming behavior remains unstudied in many species. The present work aims to analyze the swimming behavior in newly hatched larvae of six common decapod crustaceans in coastal Southeast Brazil (Macrobrachium acanthurus, Macrobrachium olfersii, Emerita brasiliensis, Ucides cordatus, Minuca rapax, and Callinectes danae). The analysis included tests with larval responses to four isolated stimuli: gravity (geotaxis), vertical salinity gradients, low-pressure zones, and presence of the planktivorous fish, Atherinella brasiliensis (only for C. danae and M. rapax). The first two and the last two stimuli were used as indicators of dispersal and defensive behaviors, respectively. All larvae preferred water depth with higher salinity levels. Additionally, negative geotaxis was observed in M. olfersii, M. acanthurus, U. cordatus, and C. danae, being stronger in the last. Both Macrobrachium larvae responded to low-pressure zones, promptly moving away. Callinectes danae and M. rapax larvae avoided contact with the predatory fish by creating avoidance zones around it, even in the absence of light. This is an active defensive behavior that has never been reported for the newly hatched larvae of these two species.

Although crustaceans are traditionally preserved in liquids (formaldehyde and/or ethyl alcohol), those substances tend to alter their morphological aspects. Glycerin, used in human anatomy, is considered a good substitute for formaldehyde, as it preserves animals in states similar to in vivo conditions. There are no records in the literature, however, concerning the use of glycerin for conserving invertebrates. The objective of this work was to elaborate and evaluate alternative techniques for conserving the crustacean Ucides cordatus (Linnaeus, 1763). Six fixatives (1, 3, 4 and 5% formaldehyde, 70% alcohol, and dietrich solution) and two controls (positive and negative) were tested, as well as the effects of freezing before fixation on the integrity of U. cordatus specimens. Our results were evaluated with respect to nine variables. The treatments that demonstrated the best aesthetic results were 4% formaldehyde and 70% ethyl alcohol. The freezing of the animals resulted in brittle organs in all treatments tested. The technique discussed here is extremely promising for the conservation of animals for educational purposes, as it produces preserved specimens that are aesthetically similar to their in vivo conditions.

This study aimed to identify alterations in gills and hepatopancreas of the crab Ucides cordatus as indicative of environmental contamination in mangrove areas subject to chemical effluents from port activities in Maranhão, Brazil. Samples of gills and hepatopancreas were removed from each animal and fixed in Davidson's solution until the procedure of histological technique. The biometric data (means and standard deviations) of the specimens collected in the study areas indicated that the crabs in the reference area are significantly (P < 0.05) higher and heavier than the crabs collected in the potentially impacted area (port area). Gill alterations (rupture of pilaster cells, dilation of the marginal channel, cuticle rupture and necrosis) and hepatopancreas alterations (abnormal lumen, vacuolized B cells, pycnotic nuclei and necrosis) were significantly (P < 0.05) more frequent in crabs collected in the port area than crabs collected in the reference area. These data indicate that the health of crabs is compromised due to the pollutants present in the mangroves that surround the port area in São Marcos' Bay. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Seasonality and crab activity affects the nutrients and physicochemical parameters in mangrove soils, thus, affecting the emissions of greenhouse gases, such as nitrous oxide (N2O). Climate change may intensify rainfall and/or enhance droughts, affecting mangroves and associated biota. Crabs are natural soil bioturbators responsible for soil aeration and turnover. We evaluated the effect of Ucides cordatus crab on N2O emissions from mangrove soils under a semiarid climate in Northeastern Brazil. Soil and gas samples were collected over the rainy and dry seasons in crab-naturally-bioturbated and crab-exclusion mangrove plots. We measured the soil's pH, redox potential, and the total contents of carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur. We found higher N2O emissions in the crab-exclusion sites compared to the bioturbated sites, as well as higher N2O emissions in the rainy season compared to the dry season. The fluxes of N2O (µg m−2 h−1) were 47.3 ± 9.7 and 8.9 ± 0.5 for the crab-exclusion sites, and 36.5 ± 7.8 and 4.5 ± 2.1 for the bioturbated sites (wet and dry seasons, respectively). The soil turning over by macrofauna led to lower N2O fluxes in natural crab-bioturbated areas, and seasonality was the environmental factor that contributed the most to the changes in N2O emissions. Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo avaliar o desempenho agronômico do coentro e as características químicas do solo sob diferentes adubações orgânicas com resíduo do caranguejo–uçá. Para o desempenho agronômico foram coletadas a altura, massa verde e seca das plantas. Na análise química foram determinadas o pH e as concentrações de 〖Ca〗^(2+), 〖〖Ca〗^(2+)+Mg〗^(2+), 〖Al〗^(3+),〖Na〗^+, Acidez potencial (H^++〖Al〗^(3+)), Matéria Orgânica (M.O), Nitrogênio (N) e Potássio (P). Os tratamentos adubados com os compostos orgânicos que possuíam gliricídia, folhas secas e 5% de resíduos do caranguejo apresentaram melhor desempenho agronômico. No que diz respeito às características químicas a Análise de Agrupamento Hierárquica (AAH) permitiu identificar a formação de três grupos, que se uniram de acordo com as quantidades de resíduos do caranguejo presente nos tratamentos. E com a Análise de Componentes Principais (ACP) foi possível identificar que a adição de resíduos do caranguejo-uçá contribuiu para o aumento nos teores de 〖Ca〗^(2+), 〖〖Ca〗^(2+)+Mg〗^(2+),〖Na〗^+e pH alcalino, e na inexistência de 〖Al〗^(3+)e Acidez potencial (H^++〖Al〗^(3+)) no solo.

Metals are persistent pollutants, able to accumulate in the biota and magnify in trophic web. In the specific case of cadmium contamination, it has been the subject of considerable interest in recent years because of its biological effects and it is one of major pollutant in estuarine areas. Ucides cordatus is considered a mangrove local sentinel crab species in Brazil and there are previous studies reporting crab subpopulations living from pristine to heavily metal impacted areas in São Paulo coast (Southeastern Brazil). Taking into account the background knowledge about these subpopulations, we proposed the hypothesis that crabs from a highly polluted mangrove (Cubatão - CUB) have developed biological tolerance to cadmium compared to animals from an Environmental Protected Area (Jureia - JUR). Aiming to verify this hypothesis, we have investigated total bioaccumulation and subcellular partition of Cd, besides biomarkers' responses during a long-term exposure bioassay (28 days, with weekly sampling) using a supposedly safe Cd concentration (0.0022 mg L−1). Specimens from the pristine area (JUR) accumulated higher total Cd, as such as in its biologically active form in gills. Animals living in the polluted site (CUB) presented higher amounts of Cd in the mainly detoxifying tissue (hepatopancreas), which could be considered a pathway leading to tolerance for this metal. Multivariate analysis indicated that bioaccumulation (active, detoxified and total Cd) is linked to geno-cytotoxic damages. CUB subpopulation was considered more tolerant since it presented proportionally less damage and more capacity to allocate Cd in the main detoxifying forms and tissues. Mangrove forests provide a large variety of ecosystem services (ES) to coastal societies. Using a case study focusing on the Ajuruteua peninsula in Northern Brazil and two ES, food provisioning (ES1) and global climate regulation (ES2), this paper proposes a new framework for quantifying and valuing mangrove ES and allow for their small-scale mapping. We modelled and spatialised the two ES from different perspectives, the demand (ES1) and the supply (ES2) side respectively. This was performed by combining worldwide databases related to the global human population (ES1) or mangrove distribution and canopy height (ES2) with locally derived parameters, such as crab catches (ES1) or species-specific allometric equations based on local estimates of tree structural parameters (ES2). Based on this approach, we could estimate that the area delivers the basic nutrition of about 1400 households, which equals 2.7 million USD, and that the mangrove biomass in the area contains 2.1 million Mg C, amounting to 50.9 million USD, if it were paid as certificates. In addition to those figures, we provide high-resolution maps showing which areas are more valuable for the two respective ES, information that could help inform management strategies in the future.

Water uptake by mangrove trees can result in salt accumulation in sediment around roots, negatively influencing growth. Tidal pumping facilitates salt release and can be enhanced by crab burrows. Similarly, flushing of burrows by incoming tidal water decreases sediment salinity. In contrast to burrows with multiple entrances, the role of burrows with one opening for salinity reduction is largely unknown. In a microcosm experiment we studied the effect of artificial, burrow-like macro-pores with one opening on the desalting of mangrove sediment and growth of Rhizophora mangle L. seedlings. Sediment salinity, seedling leaf area and seedling growth were monitored over six months. Artificial burrows facilitated salt release from the sediment after six weeks, but seedling growth was not influenced. To test whether crab burrows with one opening facilitate salt release in mangrove forests, sediment salinities were measured in areas with and without R. mangle stilt roots in North Brazil at the beginning and end of the wet season. In addition, burrows of Ucides cordatus were counted. High crab burrow densities and sediment salinities were associated with stilt root occurrence. Precipitation and salt accumulation by tree roots seem to have a larger effect on sediment salinity than desalting by U. cordatus burrows.

The field of nanotechnology had enormous developments, resulting in new methods for the controlled synthesis of a wide variety of nanoscale materials with unique properties. Efficient methods such as thermal decomposition for efficient size control have been developed in recent years for the synthesis of oleic acid (OA)-coated magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles (MNP-OA). These nanostructures can be a source of pollution when emitted in the aquatic environment and could be accumulated by vulnerable marine species such as crustaceans. In this work, we synthesized and characterized MNP-OA of three different diameters (5, 8, and 12 nm) by thermal decomposition. These nanoparticles were remarkably stable after treatment with high affinity iron chelators (calcein, fluorescent desferrioxamine, and fluorescent apotransferrin); however, they displayed pro-oxidant activity after being challenged with ascorbate under two physiological buffers. Free or nanoparticle iron displayed low toxicity to four types of hepatopancreatic cells (E, R, F, and B) of the mangrove crab Ucides cordatus; however, they were promptly bioavailable, posing the risk of ecosystem disruption due to the release of excess nutrients. The mangrove crab Ucides cordatus is a bioindicator of aquatic contamination. In this work, the iron availability and redox activity of saccharide-coated mineral iron supplements (for both human and veterinary use) and ferrocene derivatives in Saline Ucides Buffer (SUB) medium were assessed. The transport of these metallodrugs by four different hepatopancreatic cell types (embryonic (E), resorptive (R), fibrillar (F), and blister (B)) of U. cordatus were measured. Organic coated iron minerals (iron supplements) were stable against strong chelators (calcein and transferrin). Ascorbic acid efficiently mediated the release of iron only from ferrocene compounds, leading to redox-active species. Ferrous iron and iron supplements were efficient in loading iron to all hepatopancreatic cell types. In contrast, ferrocene derivatives were loaded only in F and B cell types. Acute exposition to the iron compounds resulted in cell viability of 70-95%, and to intracellular iron levels as high as 0.40 μmol L−1 depending upon the compound and the cell line. The easiness that iron from iron metallodrugs was loaded/transported into U. cordatus hepatopancreatic cells reinforces a cautionary approach to the widespread disposal and use of highly bioavailable iron species as far as the long-term environmental welfare is concerned. Ucides cordatus is a semi-terrestrial crab and key species endemic to mangrove areas of eastern Americas. In North-eastern Brazil this crab holds a major socio-economic function for artisanal fisheries, as in the São Francisco River Estuary (10°30′27″S 36°23′45″W). Nevertheless, decreases in this species’ stock have been reported since 2000, requiring assessments of the crab population for conservation and management purposes. This study aims at assessing the population status and the fishery potential of this species in the mangroves of this estuary and suggests strategies for its fishery and conservation, according to the guidelines of the National Management Plan for U. cordatus Sustainable Use. Six different sites established in 30 km2 of mangroves were sampled, with the density of U. cordatus burrows estimated to evaluate the population structure using the measure of burrow diameters. Results show that the crab mean burrow size was 56.82 (±12.2) mm and that the medium-size crabs (40–70 mm) are the most abundant. The total mean crab density was 1.2 crabs m−2, from which the density of crabs in commercial size (0.85 ± 0.55 crabs m−2) was significantly higher than those in non-commercial size (0.35 ± 0.21 burrow m−2). These mangroves showed a high potential for the crab fishery, with an immediate extractive potential (IEP) of 71.2% and future extractive potential (FEP) of 28.8%. Nevertheless, a lower crab density, probably due to high crab mortality, mangrove deforestation for shrimp farming and high fishery pressure, is a limiting factor for local fishery. We conclude that mangrove areas more appropriate for U. cordatus fishery (extractive areas) show higher mean crab size, IEP and density of commercial crabs, wherein a fixed exploitation rate or/and a fixed escapement rule should be considered. Exclusion areas, intended for the conservation, show lower values of these population parameters and higher FEP, wherein the fishery should be prohibited. These management strategies should also be considered in other Brazilian mangrove areas showing similar crab population structure, thus contributing to the National Management Plan for U. cordatus Sustainable Use. Many ecological processes are influenced by salinity. Burrowing crabs, abundant fauna of mangrove forests around the world, can facilitate sediment water fluxes, which may decrease the salinity in mangrove sediments. We investigated whether and how crab burrow density and secondary fine root biomass interact to drive sediment salinity during the dry season in a northern Brazilian mangrove forest. Areas with high density of Rhizophora mangle prop roots and areas free of such roots were compared. We found no correlation between burrow density and sediment salinity in areas with dense prop and fine roots, while crab density correlated negatively with sediment salinity in areas without prop roots, where fine root density was low. Hence, the strength of sediment desalination effects of crabs seems to be context dependent, and high root density of a salt-excluding mangrove species ( R. mangle) seems to counteract the crabs' effect. Our results complement those of a former study conducted in the same area during the rainy season, highlighting that the findings are independent from seasonality and should be considered when evaluating the overall ecological effects of crabs in mangrove ecosystems. Globally, there is a lack of knowledge about tropical ecotoxicology dealing with the potential impact of metal contamination in mangrove ecosystem. This habitat is considered a nursery for several animal species, among them the “uçá”-crab ( Ucides cordatu s), known as a key species due to its biological and economical importance. This study evaluated the association involving metal contamination (Cd, Cu, Pb, Cr, Mn and Hg) in water, sediment, red-mangrove vegetation ( Rhizophora mangle ) and tissues of uçá crab, together with its geno-cytotoxic responses, based on micronucleated hemocytes frequency and the retention time of neutral red in lysosomes. We assessed six mangrove areas with distinct pollution levels in São Paulo State, Brazil, where the water and sediment contamination by metals were associated with accumulation of these pollutants in biotic compartments (mangrove leaves and crab). In U. cordatus, metal accumulation was best explained by metal concentration found in leaves of R. mangle than in the water or sediment, indicating that feeding drives metal exposure in this organism. Mercury (Hg) concentration in sediment, copper (Cu) concentration in hepatopancreas of U. cordatus and lead (Pb) in water and green leaves of R. mangle showed a significant correlation with genotoxic impact in U. cordatus . However, copper concentration (in green/senescent leaves and hepatopancreas) and lead (in sediment), were the major metals affecting lysosomal membrane integrity. Therefore, representatives of all compartments were associated with cyto and genotoxicity in this species, thus requiring a holistic approach to issues related to sublethal damage. Probability estimates of cytogenetic impacts related to metal concentration in abiotic compartments (significantly correlated with known biomarkers: Hg in sediment; and Pb in water and sediment) are also presented. Our results highlight the need for environmental restoration of mangroves areas contaminated with metals, responsible for cytogenetic injuries and revealing a pre-pathological condition in this sentinel species, in addition to ecological disturbances. Background: Brazilian mangrove forests are widely distributed along the coast and exploited by groups of people with customs and habits as diverse as the biology of the mangrove ecosystems. This study identifies different methods of extracting crabs that inhabit the mangrove belts; some of these activities, such as catching individual crabs by hand, are aimed at maintaining natural stocks of this species in Mucuri (south Bahia), Brazil. Methods: In the studied community, illegal hunting activities that violate Brazilian legislation limiting the use of tangle-netting in mangrove ecosystem were observed. Results: According to our observations, fishermen, to catch individual crabs, use the tangle-netting technique seeking to increase income and are from families that have no tradition of extraction. Conclusions: This analysis leads us to conclude that catchers from economically marginalised social groups enter mangroves for purposes of survival rather than for purposes of subsistence, because the catching by tangle-netting is a predatory technique. Tangle-netting technique increase caught but also increases their mortality rate. We emphasise that traditional catching methods are unique to Brazil and that manual capturing of crab should be preserved through public policies aimed at maintaining the crab population. Cadmium is a toxic metal, present in batteries and discarded in estuaries and mangrove habitats. Apart from that, it is a non-essential metal that causes toxic effects in many organisms. Cadmium accumulates in gills and hepatopancreas of crustaceans and its route into the cell is unknown. It is possible that occurs by calcium channels or calcium transporters. The objective of this study was to characterize the transport of cadmium and the role of calcium in different cell types from hepatopancreas of the mangrove crab Ucides cordatus . For this, the hepatopancreas was dissociated by magnetic stirring and after that separated by a sucrose gradient. Then, the cells were labeled with FluoZin-3 AM and different CdCl 2 concentrations were added together with a variety of inhibitors. The results showed that Cd 2+ transport occurs differently in each cell type from hepatopancreas and is partially explained by the function the cells perform in this organ. Embryonic (E) and Resorptive (R) cells transported more Cd 2+ compared to Fibrillar (F) and Blister (B) cells. R cells responded to Ca 2+ channel inhibitors and intracellular Ca 2+ manipulations positively, as the other cell types and in a stronger way. B cells were the least responsive to Ca 2+ channel inhibitors and, unlike the other cells, showed a competition of Cd 2+ with intracellular Ca 2+ manipulations. The results indicate that Ca 2+ affects the transport of Cd 2+ in hepatopancreatic cells of Ucides cordatus and uses Ca 2+ channels to enter these cells. In addition, information about Ca concentration could be used as a mitigating factor for Cd accumulation in crabs’ hepatopancreas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this work was to compare the morphometry of hatchery-reared and wild-caught mangrove crab (Ucides cordatus) megalopae. Ten U. cordatus megalopae of each group (hatchery-reared and wild-caught) were individually analyzed using a stereoscopic microscope equipped with an ocular micrometer. Length, width, and height of all megalopae were measured, and the size of body appendices was determined. The results indicate that the hatchery-reared megalopae are more robust than the wild ones. Furthermore, some significant differences in the size of certain appendices can be cues of the kind of alterations that hatchery-reared individuals experience.

Quick, reliable and non destructive methods are necessary to estimate size structure on commercial land crabs, in order to acquire relevant information concerning the health of their populations. Cardisoma guanhumi and Ucides cordatus are two land crabs that are exploited at a high scale and also in an artisan way in the Caribbean area and in the coasts of Brazil, which populations are endangered due to uncontrolled exploitation. The purpose of this work is to provide various methods to estimate indirectly crab body size. Sampling was carried out in Carenero (C. guanhumi) and Cumaná (U. cordatus) (Venezuela). For each species, three methods were used to measure burrow diameter (Vernier, internal spring caliper and photograph), and these were correlated with real body size of the crabs. Model II linear regression analyzes, i.e. Ordinary Least Squares and Mayor Axis, were used to build and test the performance of forecasting models. Cardisoma guanhumi showed a high bivariate data dispersion using Vernier and photo measuring methods, increasing these towards larger animals. Less dispersion was achieved with the spring caliper method; this resulted in the most accurate measurements of indirectly estimated body size in C. guanhumi (r²= 0.61), whereas Vernier measurements were the least precise. On the other hand, all three methods gave reliable estimates for U. cordatus, being the Vernier method the most accurate (r²= 0.71). However, in both species, all forecasting equations overestimated the size of smaller crabs (those below the mean) but underestimated the size of larger crabs. Nevertheless, all three methods were statistically significant for each of the species, and looking at the above mentioned underand overestimations, they can serve as reliable and fast non-destructive tools to be used by resource managers and field biologists to acquire size structure information concerning these two species. Vernier and internal spring caliper methods are recommended for relative small sampling areas, while photo method is suggested to be used in very extensive sampling regions

Study on mangrove water and sediment of Paraiba do Norte river (Northeastern Brazil) and crabmeat of Ucides cordatus was carried to investigate the relation between the abundance of bacteria in the mangrove habitat and in the crabmeat. Simultaneous collection of samples of water, sediment and crabs (U. cordatus) was done during the rainy and dry seasons at two areas of mangroves that differed in influence of tide and sewage discharge. The numbers of total heterotrophic bacteria in the mangrove water were between 0.04 and 6 log CFU 100mL-1, and in the sediment between 5 and 6 log CFU g-1. The location closer to waste discharge showed higher incidence of total heterotrophic bacteria, coliforms, Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella spp. The counts of total heterotrophic bacteria in the crabmeat varied from 1.3 to 4.4 log CFU g-1, and did not differ significantly between the locations analysed. No crabmeat sample showed the presence of coliforms, S. aureus and Salmonella spp.O estudo sobre água e sedimento do mangue do rio Paraíba do Norte (Nordeste do Brasil) e carne de caranguejo-uçá (Ucides cordatus) foi conduzido para investigar a relação entre a abundância de bactérias heterotróficas totais e patogênicas no ambiente e na carne de caranguejo. As amostras de água, sedimento e caranguejos U. cordatus foram coletadas simultaneamente em duas áreas do manguezal que diferiam em influencia da maré e do esgoto lançado no mangue. O número de bactérias heterotróficas totais nas amostras de água do mangue variaram de 0,04 a 6 log UFC 100mL-1, e no sedimento de 5 a 6 log UFC g-1. Em local mais próximo a desembocadura do esgoto evidenciou-se maior incidência de bactérias heterotróficas totais, coliformes, Staphylococcus aureus e Salmonella spp. As contagens de bactérias totais nas amostras da carne de caranguejo variaram de 1,3 a 4,4 log UFC g-1, não diferindo estatisticamente entre as áreas estudadas. Nenhuma amostra da carne de caranguejo apresentou coliformes, S. aureus e Salmonella spp.

O presente trabalho foi realizado no Estuário do Rio Ceará situado no município de Caucaia – CE, de agosto a dezembro de 2003, com o principal objetivo de contribuir com as informações sobre a utilização do “forjo” equipamento de captura. A captura de caranguejo uçá Ucides cordatus (Linnaeus, 1763) na comunidade de Tapebas, Estado do Ceará, é principalmente feito pelo método do “forjo”. O “forjo” é uma armadilha confeccionada com lata, câmara de ar de pneu, arame e madeira do mangue. Cada pescador usa de 80 a 100 “forjos” colocados em várias áreas no mangue. Em nosso estudo, o comprimento médio dos 2.100 caranguejos machos e fêmeas capturados foram de 45,54mm e de 44,78mm, respectivamente. A produção obtida pelos caranguejeiros nas áreas de manguezais do Rio Ceará é comercializada próximo à comunidade. Fish predation is thought to exert an important influence on the demographical dynamics of larvae and juveniles of estuarine brachyuran crabs but few studies have investigated this phenomenon in nature. In this study, fishes were captured during full moons (in January and February 2005), when many brachyuran species are known to release their larvae. Samples were carried out in the Pinheiros river, Guaratuba Bay, Paraná, Brazil. The stomach contents of collected fishes were surveyed to determine the species that are most likely to prey on brachyuran immature forms in this location. Two techniques were used to capture fishes: manual samplings, using a 5-mm mesh size net (1.8m depth), and bottom trawling with a 20-mm mesh size net. The collected specimens were fixed using 10% formaldehyde and preserved in 70% ethanol. A total of 2941 fishes of 43 different species were collected and the stomach contents of 962 individuals were analyzed in laboratory. Food items were identified and quantified. The fish species captured using manual nets that showed the highest number of preyed zoeae per stomach was the clupeid Platanichthys platana (Regan, 1917). Sphoeroides testudineus (Linnaeus, 1758) and Centropomus parallelus Poey, 1860 showed the highest levels of predation on megalopae. Of the fish species captured using trawl nets, Genidens genidens (Cuvier, 1829) showed the highest average number of zoeae per analyzed stomach and Bairdiella ronchus (Cuvier, 1830) was the most important predator on brachyuran megalopae and on young juveniles. The obtained data indicate that brachyuran crab restocking efforts performed in the Guaratuba Bay should include strategies to avoid or, at least, reduce the access of fishes to the released early juvenile stages, given the potential substantial losses caused by fish predation. Considering that, in general, predation potential was 8.5 times lower in juveniles than in megalopae, releasing immature forms produced in laboratory in the juvenile phase or releasing megalopae into tethered areas and maintaining than under this condition until they reach the juvenile phase may be tested as a method to reduce losses given to fish predation.

The relationship of wet weight (WT) to cephalothorax width (CW) and temporal and seasonal variations in the condition factor were analyzed for each sex of the mangrove crab Ucides cordatus, using specimens collected monthly from September 1998 through September 2000, at Iguape, state of São Paulo. The WT/CW relationship, determined by the regression analysis and the condition factor were evaluated individually, monthly and seasonally, for each sex. The WT/CW relationship indicated isometric growth in males and negative allometric growth in females. Body weight was higher in males than in females of equivalent size and this difference was associated with the males' faster growth and heavier chelipeds. On the other hand, the means for condition factor were always higher for females than for males; the mean condition factor was lower in spring and summer and higher in autumn and winter.A determinação da relação do peso úmido (WT) pela largura cefalotorácica (CW) do caranguejo U. cordatus e a análise da dinâmica temporo-sazonal do fator de condição foram realizadas com machos e fêmeas coletados mensalmente no período de 1998/2000, em Iguape (SP). A relação WT/CW foi determinada por análise de regressão, enquanto o fator de condição foi determinado individualmente para cada animal, bem como pela média mensal e sazonal para cada sexo. A relação WT/CW evidenciou um crescimento isométrico nos machos e alométrico negativo nas fêmeas, indicando que os machos atingem um peso corpóreo superior ao das fêmeas para um mesmo tamanho de referência. Tal fato está associado ao maior crescimento e peso dos quelípodos do macho. As médias do fator de condição das fêmeas foram maiores que as dos machos. Os menores valores do fator de condição ocorreram durante a primavera e verão, atingindo os maiores níveis durante o outono e inverno.

The present work was carried out in the estuary of the Ceará river situated in the municipality of Caucaia – CE, from August to December 2003, with the aim of contributing to information about utilization of the “forjo” method of trapping. The capture of the crab Ucides cordatus (Linnaeus, 1763) in the Tapebas community, Ceará State, is mainly done by “forjo”. The “forjo” is a crab trap made out of an oil can, a tyre innertube, wire, and mangrove sticks. Each crab gatherer uses from 80 to 100 “forjos”, placed in various areas of the mangrove. In our study, the average lengths of 2001 captured males and females were 45.54mm and 44.78mm, respectively. The crabs captured from the mangrove area of the Ceará river are marketed within the vicinity of the community itself, and the crab production in the Tapebas community is extremely important on account of the fact that there are few other alternatives for income.

The goal of the present study was to determine the most appropriate time to release the immatures of Ucides cordatus (Linnaeus) produced in the laboratory into the natural environments. Specifically, the time when the megalopae sought the mangrove sediment to excavate the burrows was determined, as well as the time necessary for their metamorphosis into the first juvenile stage. Results indicated that the megalopae of U. cordatus reared in the laboratory took three to ten days (median = 6) after their molt to excavated burrows in the sediment. The average time for the megalopae to molt into juveniles was 12.6 days (SD = 2.3).O estágio de desenvolvimento em que se encontram as formas jovens de caranguejo produzidas em laboratório, no momento da sua liberação para o ambiente, é um fator chave para o sucesso dos trabalhos de repovoamento. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo determinar a idade mais adequada das formas jovens de U. cordatus, produzidas em laboratório, para sua liberação no ambiente natural. Especificamente, o momento em que as megalopas procuram o sedimento de mangue para escavar tocas foi determinado, assim como o tempo que demoram até realizarem a metamorfose para o primeiro estágio juvenil. O experimento indicou que as megalopas de U. cordatus produzidas em laboratório levam de 3 a 10 dias (mediana = 6) após a metamorfose até escavarem tocas no sedimento. O tempo médio que as megalopas levaram até realizar a metamorfose para o primeiro estágio juvenil foi de 12,6 dias (desvio padrão = 2,33).

O presente trabalho estudou o efeito da salinidade na sobrevivência e na duração do desenvolvimento larval do caranguejo-uçá, Ucides cordatus (do estuário do Rio Caeté, Norte do Brasil), até a fase de megalopa em sete tratamentos de salinidade (0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 e 30). A salinidade afetou significativamente a sobrevivência das larvas zoea, no entanto não afetou a duração do desenvolvimento larval (20,77 ± 1,56 dias). Nas salinidades 0, 5 e 10 houve total mortalidade das larvas zoea. Somente a partir da salinidade 15 observou-se um desenvolvimento completo até a fase de megalopa. A taxa de sobrevivência foi maior em salinidade 30 (72%) e menor em 15 (16%). A reduzida taxa de sobrevivência das larvas zoea de U. cordatus, em salinidades baixas, indica a necessidade de dispersão larval do estuário para as águas costeiras onde as condições de salinidade para o desenvolvimento larval são mais favoráveis. Caso contrário se não houvesse a dispersão, a reduzida salinidade das águas estuarinas no período chuvoso, causaria uma elevada mortalidade, afetando desta forma o recrutamento, a manutenção e o crescimento da população de U. cordatus nos manguezais.The present work studied the effect of salinity on the survival and duration of larval development of the mangrove crab, Ucides cordatus (from the Caeté River estuary, North of Brazil) until the megalopal phase in seven salinity treatments (0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 e 30). Salinity significantly affected the survival of the zoea larvae, however it did not affect the duration of the larval development (20.77 ± 1.56 days). In salinity 0, 5 and 10 all zoea larvae died. Only from off salinity 15, complete development until the megalopal phase occurred. The survival rate was highest in salinity 30 (72%) and lowest in 15 (16%). The reduced survival rate of the U. cordatus zoea larvae, in low salinities, indicates the necessity of larval dispersion from the estuary to coastal waters, where salinity conditions for larval development are more favorable. Otherwise, if there was no dispersion, the reduced salinity of estuarine waters in the rainy season would cause a high mortality thereby affecting the recruitment, maintenance and growth of the U. cordatus population in the mangroves.

Larvas de algumas espécies de crustáceos são lecitotróficas, completando seus estágios de desenvolvimento larval sem a necessidade de alimentos. Entretanto, a alimentação no estágio de zoea I de Ucides cordatus (LINNAEUS, 1763) parece ser essencial para suprir as necessidades nutricionais indispensáveis ao complemento de seu desenvolvimento larval. Para comprovar a necessidade de alimento e testar a eficiência de diferentes tipos de dietas sobre as taxas de sobrevivência durante as fases iniciais de zoea, foram aplicados cinco tratamentos, em triplicata, utilizando Thalassiosira weissflogii, Skeletonema costatum, Dunaliella viridis, Artemia sp. e Artemia sp. com Thalassiosira weissflogii (tratamentos: Tw, Sc, Dv, A e ATw, respectivamente). Nos cinco tratamentos empregados, os percentuais de larvas que mudaram para o estágio de zoea II foram de 17%, 18,3%, 27%, 58% e 80% para Dv, A, Sc, Tw e ATw, respectivamente. Foi possível verificar que os tratamentos com T. weissflogii (58 %) e Artemia sp. com T. weissflogii (80%) supriram as necessidades nutricionais das larvas zoea I e II, demonstrando que estas espécies planctônicas constituem uma fonte adequada de alimento nestes estágios larvais. Por outro lado, D. viridis não foi nutritivamente adequada para alimentação de zoea I e II de U. cordatus sob as condições experimentais utilizadas.

Crustacean larvae of certain species are lecithotrophic completing their development without feeding. However, feeding seems to be essential to complete the entire molting process in larvae of Ucides cordatus (LINNAEUS, 1763). In order to verify the necessity of food and the efficiency of different diets on molting between initial zoea stages, five triplicate treatments with live food were employed in laboratory experiments: Thalassiosira weissflogii, Skeletonema costatum, Dunaliella viridis, Artemia sp. and Artemia sp. with Thalassiosira weissflogii (treatments: Tw; Sc, Dv, A e ATw, respectively). In all treatments, success in molting to zoea II stage was accomplished (17%, 18.3%, 27%, 58%, and 80% for Dv, A, Sc, Tw and ATw, respectively). Treatments with microalgae (T. weissflogii, 58 % and Artemia sp. with T. weissflogiiI, 80%) were suitable to supply zoea larvae nutritional requirements showing to be an adequated source of food in this larval stage. On the other hand, D. viridis was not nutritionally adequated for the feed of U. cordatus zoea I and II under the experimental employed conditions.

Mangrove forests are highly productive and play a major role in global carbon cycling. Their carbon accumulation can be influenced through the consumption of nutrient-poor leaves and propagules by herbivore crabs. Anthropogenic nutrient input from sewage contamination is widespread in these often naturally nutrient-limited ecosystems. We hypothesised that sewage-mediated nutrient input to mangrove stands of Paranaguá Bay (southern Brazil), would alter the nutrient sources available for crabs, e.g. through microphytobenthos increase, and that this would reflect in their feeding behaviour. We predicted that propagules of Rhizophora mangle in contaminated stands would experience lower grazing pressure from their two main local consumers (Ucides cordatus and Goniopsis cruentata) . We compared herbivory rates on R. mangle propagules in sewage contaminated and uncontaminated mangrove stands. We found that herbivory rates were significantly lower in contaminated than uncontaminated forests, but this pattern could not be clearly attributed to increased nutrient availability. There is a global lack of knowledge on tropical ecotoxicology, particularly in terms of mangrove areas. These areas often serve as nurseries or homes for several animal species, including Ucides cordatus (the uçá crab). This species is widely distributed, is part of the diet of human coastal communities, and is considered to be a sentinel species due to its sensitivity to toxic xenobiotics in natural environments. Sublethal damages to benthic populations reveal pre-pathological conditions, but discussions of the implications are scarce in the literature. In Brazil, the state of São Paulo offers an interesting scenario for ecotoxicology and population studies: it is easy to distinguish between mangroves that are well preserved and those which are significantly impacted by human activity. The objectives of this study were to provide the normal baseline values for the frequency of Micronucleated cells (MN‰) and for neutral red retention time (NRRT) in U. cordatus at pristine locations, as well to indicate the conservation status of different mangrove areas using a multi-level biological response approach in which these biomarkers and population indicators (condition factor and crab density) are applied in relation to environmental quality indicators (determined via information in the literature and solid waste volume). A mangrove area with no effects of impact (areas of reference or pristine areas) presented a mean value of MN‰<3 and NRRT>120 min, values which were assumed as baseline values representing genetic and physiological normality. A significant correlation was found between NRRT and MN, with both showing similar and effective results for distinguishing between different mangrove areas according to conservation status. Furthermore, crab density was lower in more impacted mangrove areas, a finding which also reflects the effects of sublethal damage; this finding was not determined by condition factor measurements. Multi-level biological responses were able to reflect the conservation status of the mangrove areas studied using information on guideline values of MN‰, NRRT, and density of the uçá crab in order to categorize three levels of human impacts in mangrove areas: PNI (probable null impact); PLI (probable low impact); and PHI (probable high impact). Results confirm the success of U. cordatus species’ multi-level biological responses in diagnosing threats to mangrove areas. The purpose of this study was analyze the biometry of the mangrove crab, Ucides cordatus (L., 1763), captured commercially in the Gargaú Mangrove (RJ), comparing common practices with the demands of Law no 52/2003 of IBAM A – Brazilian Agency of Environment and Natural Resources – and making inferences about the fishing community’s perception of the species. From April 2002 to March 2003, 571 specimens were analyzed and the highest frequency of males and females was registered in a carapace width of 6,0 6,5cm. The exploration of the mangrove crab is conducted all year round and the gear known as “redinha” is used in its capture, disrespecting the abovementioned law. However, the capture excludes ovigerous females and small-sized specimens, which reflects the fishing community’s concerns about this resource. The exploitation of this crab population probably interferes in its growth pattern, and managerial action needs to be implemented, considering not only the recommendations of scientific studies, but also the local fishermen’s knowledge of the species.

Although lethargic crab disease (LCD) is causing massive mortalities in populations of the mangrove crab Ucides cordatus of Northeastern Brazil, the identity of its etiological agent was hitherto unknown. In this study we provide robust evidence suggesting that LCD is caused by an anamorph Ascomycota (Fungi). We examined specimens of U. cordatus collected from stocks affected by LCD. Histological and TEM methods detected the presence of hyphae, conidia, and condiophores in several host tissues. Moreover, the abundance of fungal stages is negatively associated with crab health. Finally, DNA was isolated from the fungus and a region of its 18S ribosomal gene was sequenced. Phylogenetic analyses not only confirm the diagnosis of the LCD fungus in crab tissues as an ascomycete, but also suggest a close relationship with members of the subphylum Pezizomycotina.
