Political participation (PP) has been found to be associated with socioeconomic status (SES) indicators, most strongly with educational attainment. At the same time, previous research has been inconclusive regarding potentially biasing effects of personality and cognitive characteristics on this association. In the present study, we investigated the association between different forms of youth PP and attained SES, taking youth's and parents' individual characteristics into account. We used data from 983 German twin families with same‐sex twin pairs of emerging adults (aged 21–25) that provided information on electoral, nonelectoral individual and collective political participation as well as on youth's and their parents relevant personality and cognitive characteristics. After adjusting for youth's and parents' individual characteristics, regression analyses showed educational attainment and household income to be solely significantly associated with emerging adults' electoral political participation. Genetically informative analyses revealed confoundedness due to shared environmental factors for electoral PP and due to genetic factors for individual and collective PP. Depending on the form of PP, the covariance between attained SES indicators and youth's PP mostly or fully overlapped with variance in political interest, general cognitive ability, and/or openness to experience. Objective: Several personality theories distinguish between rather genetically rooted, universal dispositional traits (DTs) and rather environmentally shaped, more contextualized characteristic adaptations (CAs). However, no study so far has compared different measures of theoretically postulated DTs and CAs regarding their environmental and genetic components while considering differences in measurement abstraction and reliability. This study aims to bridge this gap by testing the assumed differences in the sensitivity to environmental influences based on representative sets of DTs (Big Five and HEXACO domains and facets) and CAs (goals, interests, value priorities, religiousness, and self‐schemas). Method: Using intra‐class correlations and running extended twin family and spouses‐of‐twins model analyses, we analyzed a large data set (N = 1967) encompassing 636 twin pairs, 787 parent‐offspring dyads, and 325 spouses/partners. Results: Findings consistently support lower environmentality of DTs compared to CAs. On average, more than half of reliable variance in DTs was genetic, whereas the reverse was found for CAs. Larger environmental components in CAs were primarily attributable to larger individual‐specific effects (beyond error of measurement) and factors shared by spouses. This twin family study first aimed to investigate the evidence for genetic factors predicting the risk of lifetime prevalence of non-specific low back pain of at least three months duration (LBP (life)) and one-month current prevalence of thoracolumbar back pain (TLBP (current)) using a study of children, adolescents, and their first-degree relatives. Secondly, the study aimed to identify associations between pain in the back with pain in other regions and also with other conditions of interest. Randomly selected families (n = 2479) with child or adolescent twin pairs and their biological parents and first siblings were approached by Twins Research Australia. There were 651 complete twin pairs aged 6–20 years (response 26%). Casewise concordance, correlation, and odds ratios were compared for monozygous (MZ) and dizygous (DZ) pairs to enable inference about the potential existence of genetic vulnerability. Multivariable random effects logistic regression was used to estimate associations between LBP (life) or TLBP (current) as an outcome with the potentially relevant condition as predictors. The MZ pairs were more similar than the DZ pairs for each of the back pain conditions (all p values < 0.02). Both back pain conditions were associated with pain in multiple sites and with primary pain and other conditions using the combined twin and sibling sample (n = 1382). Data were consistent with the existence of genetic influences on the pain measures under the equal environments assumption of the classic twin model and associations with both categories of back pain were consistent with primary pain conditions and syndromes of childhood and adolescence which has research and clinical implications. Surveys were sent to 3909 Australian twin families, assessing the lifetime prevalence of growing pains, migraine, headache, recurrent abdominal pain, low back pain, and persistent pain (not otherwise specified) in pediatric twins and their immediate family members. Comparisons between monozygous (MZ) and dizygous (DZ) twin pair correlations, concordances and odds ratios were performed to assess the contribution of additive genetic influences. Random-effects logistic regression modelling was used to evaluate relationships between twin individuals and their co-twins, mothers, fathers and oldest siblings with the subject conditions. Twin analyses of responses from 1016 families revealed significant influence of additive genetic effects on the presence of growing pains, migraine, and recurrent abdominal pain. The analyses for headache, low back pain, and persistent pain overall did not conclusively demonstrate that genetic influences were implicated more than shared environmental factors. Regression analyses demonstrated varying levels of significance in relationships between family members and twin individuals for the tested conditions, with strongest support for genetic influences in growing pains and migraine. Objective: This study was designed to investigate painless and painful subsets of pediatric restless legs syndrome (RLS) for genetic influence and for associations with iron deficiency and common pediatric pain disorders.Methods: In a twin family study, twins (3-18 years) and their oldest siblings, mothers and fathers completed questionnaires, assessing lifetime prevalence of RLS using current criteria, as well as history of iron deficiency and pediatric pain disorders. Subsets were categorized as RLS-Painless or RLS-Painful. Within twin pair analyses were conducted to assess familial and potential genetic effects for the defined subsets. Penalized maximum likelihood logistic regression was used to test familial associations. Random-effects logistic regression modeling was used in the total pediatric sample to investigate univariate and multivariate associations with the subsets.Results: Data were available for 2033 twin individuals (1007 monozygous (MZ), 1026 dizygous (DZ); 51.7% female), 688 siblings, 1013 mothers and 921 fathers. Odds ratios, correlations and casewise concordance were significantly higher in MZ than in DZ twins only for RLS-Painful. RLS-Painless, though familial (co-twin and mother), was not genetically influenced, but was independently associated with female sex (OR 0.52, p = 0.003), iron deficiency (OR 4.20, p < 0.001) and with persistent pain disorders (OR 2.28, p = 0.02). RLS-Painful was familial and was probably genetically influenced; was independently associated with non-migraine headaches (OR 2.70, p = 0.02) and recurrent abdominal pain (OR 2.07, p = 0.04).Conclusions: Pediatric RLS was heterogeneous and was categorized into contrasting painless and painful phenotypes. The disease- and mortality-related difference between biological age based on DNA methylation and chronological age (Δage) has been found to have approximately 40% heritability by assuming that the familial correlation is only explained by additive genetic factors. We calculated two different Δage measures for 132 middle-aged female twin pairs (66 monozygotic and 66 dizygotic twin pairs) and their 215 sisters using DNA methylation data measured by the Infinium HumanMethylation450 BeadChip arrays. For each Δage measure, and their combined measure, we estimated the familial correlation for MZ, DZ and sibling pairs using the multivariate normal model for pedigree analysis. We also pooled our estimates with those from a former study to estimate weighted average correlations. For both Δage measures, there was familial correlation that varied across different types of relatives. No evidence of a difference was found between the MZ and DZ pair correlations, or between the DZ and sibling pair correlations. The only difference was between the MZ and sibling pair correlations (p < .01), and there was marginal evidence that the MZ pair correlation was greater than twice the sibling pair correlation (p < .08). For weighted average correlation, there was evidence that the MZ pair correlation was greater than the DZ pair correlation (p < .03), and marginally greater than twice the sibling pair correlation (p < .08). The varied familial correlation of Δage is not explained by additive genetic factors alone, implying the existence of shared non-genetic factors explaining variation in Δage for middle-aged women.
