Abstract Satellite laser ranging (SLR) requires accurate troposphere delay models to properly correct the observed distances to satellites and derive fundamental geodetic and geodynamic parameters. The currently used models for the tropospheric delay employ in situ meteorological data collected simultaneously with laser measurements. However, the standard models assume full symmetry of the atmosphere above the SLR stations because all meteorological data come from one sensor. In this study, we evaluate various methods of troposphere delay modeling based on numerical weather models, such as the Potsdam Mapping Function (PMF) and Vienna Mapping Function for optical frequencies (VMF3o), in situ measurements, the Wrocław gradient model (WGM) and the combination of different models. We found large discrepancies between pressure, temperature, and humidity records between in situ measurements and numerical models. The best results for the zenith delays are obtained when using in situ meteorological data with the estimation of tropospheric biases. For stations with some deficiencies in proper humidity measurements, e.g., Zimmerwald in Switzerland, the best results are obtained when using hydrostatic zenith delays based on in situ data and wet delays based on numerical weather models. Finally, we found that using horizontal gradients of the tropospheric delay is indispensable to avoid biases in the SLR-based Earth rotation parameters of approximately 20 $$\upmu$$ μ as for polar motion. The horizontal gradients successfully account for the asymmetry of the troposphere above SLR stations and can be derived from PMF, VMF3o, or a parameterized WGM model with similar accuracies.

Atmospheric delay correction remains a major challenge for interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) technology. In this paper, we first reviewed several commonly used methods for tropospheric delay correction in InSAR. Subsequently, considering the large volume and high temporal resolution of global navigation satellite system (GNSS) station measurement data, we proposed a method for spatial prediction of the InSAR tropospheric delay phase based on the backpropagation (BP) neural network and GNSS zenith total delay (ZTD). Using 42 Sentinel-1 interferograms over the Los Angeles area in 2021 as an example, we validated the accuracy of the BP + GNSS method in spatially predicting ZTD and compared the correction effects of BP + GNSS and five other methods on interferograms using the standard deviation (StaD) and structural similarity (SSIM). The results demonstrated that the BP + GNSS method reduced the root-mean-square error (RMSE) in spatial prediction by approximately 95.50% compared to the conventional interpolation method. After correction using the BP + GNSS method, StaD decreased in 92.86% of interferograms, with an average decrease of 52.03%, indicating significantly better correction effects than other methods. The SSIM of the BP + GNSS method was lower in mountainous and high-altitude areas with obvious terrain changes in the east and north, exhibiting excellent and stable correction performance in different seasons, particularly outperforming the GACOS method in autumn and winter. The BP + GNSS method can be employed to generate InSAR tropospheric delay maps with high temporal and spatial resolution, effectively addressing the challenge of removing InSAR tropospheric delay signals in areas with significant terrain variations. This paper presents the results of a study on the use of different tropospheric correction models in SBAS positioning for air navigation. The paper, in particular, determines the influence of the Saastamoinen troposphere and RTCA-MOPS models on the determination of aircraft coordinates and mean coordinate errors in the SBAS positioning method. The study uses real kinematic data from a GPS navigation system recorded by an onboard GNSS satellite receiver as well as SBAS corrections. In the experiment, the authors include SBAS corrections from EGNOS and SDCM augmentation systems. The navigation calculations were performed using RTKLIB v.2.4.3 and Scilab 6.1.1 software. Based on the conducted research, it was found that the difference in aircraft coordinates using different troposphere models can reach up to ±2.14 m. Furthermore, the use of the RTCA-MOPS troposphere model improved the values of mean coordinate errors from 5 to 9% for the GPS+EGNOS solution and from 7 to 12% for the GPS+SDCM solution, respectively. The obtained computational findings confirm the validity of using the RTCA-MOPS troposphere model for SBAS positioning in aerial navigation.

The global tropospheric zenith delay grid products of VMF1 and VMF3 (Vienna mapping functions) with different resolutions are used to calculate the tropospheric zenith delay of eight IGS (International GNSS Service) stations in China, and the accuracy of the two products under different interpolation methods is analyzed. As a result, the accuracy of utilizing different interpolation methods shows no obvious differences. The interpolation accuracy of the VMF3 grid model is slightly higher than that of the VMF1, and the interpolation accuracy of tropospheric delay is related to the elevation difference of grid points. In addition, according to ERA5 (the fifth generation of the Global Climate Information Analysis data set), the atmospheric stratification tropospheric delay is obtained, and a ZTD (the zenith tropospheric delay) height change grid model is constructed using the least squares exponential fitting method. The accuracy of the model is verified using the tropospheric delay product provided by the IGS. Finally, the constructed ZTD height change grid model is used as ZTD height reduction to solve the problem of large tropospheric delay errors in the VMF interpolation when the height change is large. In precise global navigation satellite system (GNSS) data processing, the mapping function is a key factor in troposphere delay modelling. Currently, site-dependent troposphere mapping functions are only provided for specific sites, while for other sites, other mapping functions, such as the gridded Vienna Mapping Function (VMF1/VMF3), are recommended, in which a height correction is always required to convert the hydrostatic mapping function from model height to site height. In this analysis, an improved height correction model is proposed based on the fifth-generation European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts reanalysis (ERA5). Compared to the commonly used Niell model, the coefficients in the improved model are no longer constants but are provided in a global 5 ∘ × 5 ∘ grid on a monthly basis, with the significant difference that the coefficient a of the Niell model is modelled as quadratically varying with height. To evaluate its performance, we applied the improved model to VMF1 ( 2 ∘ × 2. 5 ∘ ) and VMF3 ( 5 ∘ × 5 ∘ and 1 ∘ × 1 ∘ ) gridded data for all of 2015 and then compared them with site-dependent data at 402 VMF1 sites and 505 VMF3 sites, respectively. It was shown that the improved model outperformed the Niell model at most stations, and the improvement of the slant path delay (SPD) became better with increasing height difference. The maximum improvement of the SPD at a 3 ∘ elevation angle is 29.5 mm at SANT for the VMF1 2 ∘ × 2. 5 ∘ grid and 18.7 mm and 16.4 mm for the VMF3 5 ∘ × 5 ∘ and 1 ∘ × 1 ∘ grids, respectively, both achieved at NAMA. For all height difference intervals, the average and maximum improvements of the SPD can reach approximately 30% and 50% for both the VMF1 2 ∘ × 2. 5 ∘ and VMF3 1 ∘ × 1 ∘ grids, respectively, while only approximately 14% and 30% improvements for the VMF3 5 ∘ × 5 ∘ grid, respectively, due to the coarse resolution of the mapping function. Therefore, we can benefit significantly from the improved model, which becomes even more important when stations with large height differences, i.e. in mountainous areas or on mid-ocean islands, are included in precise GNSS data processing. The Chang'E‐5 (CE‐5) spacecraft was launched on 24 November 2020 with the purpose to implement unmanned lunar surface sampling and return. Very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) technique played an important role in real‐time precise trajectory determination and attitude determination of the CE‐5 spacecraft in the Earth to Moon transfer, circumlunar, landing, and ascending phases. However, tropospheric delay is one of the main error sources for VLBI observations which has to be corrected accurately for precise trajectory determination. To deal with this error properly, a prediction model (TRO_P) and a method with Global Navigation Satellite System observations (TRO_G) are proposed for tropospheric zenith delay correction for real‐time and 30 min latency trajectory determination of the CE‐5 spacecraft, respectively. The results demonstrate that the mean root mean square (RMS) of residual error of VLBI delay and delay rate for TRO_P are 0.62 ns and 0.75 ps/s at low elevation angle, respectively. Moreover, the improvement for the mean RMS of VLBI delay using TRO_G is 39.5% meaning from 0.43 to 0.26 ns compared with that using the method with meteorological data (TRO_S) at low elevation angle. This study can provide a reference for tropospheric delay calibration for trajectory determination of the spacecraft using VLBI or other techniques. The article presents numerical simulations with regard to determining the impact of the ionospheric and tropospheric delays on a radar-aircraft slant distance measurement. During the first experimental test, numerical calculations were made, showing the relationship between the ionosphere correction and the zenith angle in order to determine the measurement error of a radar-aircraft slant distance. During the second experimental test, numerical calculations were made demonstrating a relationship between the tropospheric correction and zenith angle in order to determine a measurement error of a radar-aircraft slant distance. The experimental test was conducted for the primary surveillance radar AVIA-W located on the grounds of the military aerodrome EPDE in Deblin. Based on the conducted research tests, it was found that the impact of the ionosphere delay can cause an error in a radar measurement above 4m. Moreover, influence of the troposphere delay can cause an error of a radar measurement by approximately 0.2m. The numerical simulation made in this research study may be used in the radiolocation of moving objects, as well as the GNSS satellite navigation in aviation.

In this study, done in the frame of the MGEX (Multi-GNSS Experiment) project, for 20 selected worldwide stations, and for the whole year of 2015, we compare zenithal total delay (ZTD) estimated values from BeiDou/GPS combined signals, to ZTD estimates from GPS-only signals, and also to ZTD estimates from the IGS analysis center CODE (CODE products), in order to assess the intrinsic accuracies of these ZTD estimates. We used the PANDA software from Wuhan university for all our data processing, with precise orbits (PPP) from the GFZ IGS analysis center. We found that the GPS-only ZTD estimates show a very good agreement with the CODE final ZTD products, but that a systematic negative bias of around 3 mm is showing up between the ZTD estimates from combined GPS/BeiDou data w.r.t. GPS-only data. This indicates that the accuracy of Beidou satellite orbits and clock errors still need to be improved w.r.t. to IGS standards. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Under abnormal troposphere, Ground-Based Augmentation System (GBAS) is unable to eliminate troposphere delay, resulting in non-nominal troposphere error. This paper analyzes the troposphere meteorological data of eight International GNSS Monitoring Assessment System (iGMAS) stations and 10 International GNSS Service (IGS) stations in China and records the most serious conditions during 2015 and 2016. Simulations show that the average increase in Vertical Protection Level (VPL) of all visible satellites under non-nominal troposphere is 2.32 m and that more satellites increase the VPL. To improve GBAS integrity, this paper proposes a satellite selection method to reduce the non-nominal troposphere error. First, the number of satellites in the optimal subset is determined to be 16 based on the relationship among VPL, non-nominal troposphere error and satellite geometry. Second, the distributions of the optimal satellites are determined. Finally, optimal satellites are selected in different elevation ranges. Results show that the average VPL increase caused by non-nominal troposphere error is 1.15 m using the proposed method. Compared with the brute method and greedy method, the running rate of the proposed method is improved by 390.91% and 111.65%, respectively. The Joint Precision Approach Landing System (JPALS) addresses tropospheric errors through double-difference and tropospheric model correction. Large residuals occur with two types of tropospheric anomalies: the vertical duct and horizontal non-nominal troposphere. Through analyzing 8 years of meteorological data from the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), we find that the two types of anomalies can occur simultaneously. In addition, the existing vertical protection level (VPL) calculation method under tropospheric anomalies is based on the least squares method, which is not applicable to Sea-Based JPALS using the Kalman filter. Therefore, we start by calculating the zenith duct error by numerical integration. The maximum error observed is 45.64 mm, and the error seasonal characteristic is analyzed. For the non-nominal troposphere, the worst meteorological conditions in the Chinese surrounding sea areas are used to calculate the non-nominal errors, which are fitted to a satellite-elevation-dependent model. Then, a VPL calculation method based on the Kalman filter under tropospheric anomalies is proposed. Finally, a multiple approach simulation is conducted. The results show that the average VPL increments introduced by the duct and non-nominal troposphere anomalies are 0.082 m and 0.211 m, respectively, with growth percentages of 12.903% and 30.857%, respectively. The increment under simultaneous anomalies is 0.272 m with a growth of 40.427%. Furthermore, the average availability under normal conditions is 100%. Considering the duct and the non-nominal troposphere anomalies, the availability loss is 0.017% and 3.674%, respectively. Under simultaneous anomalies, this loss is 4.743%.

The article analyses the influence of dynamical errors, ionospherie and tropospherie errors on navigational definition of aircraft. The quantity of these errors for the Tumen region is cited. Comparative analysis of these errors is given.

Abstract: Tropospheric delay is a major error source in positioning by Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSSs). System users often apply one of the available troposphere models without giving sufficient background on their performance. In this study, the performance of different known hydrostatic and wet troposphere delay models and mapping functions are internally and externally compared and analysed at selected sites around the globe. International GNSS Service (IGS) products were used as a reference. The best performing models are presented. Results showed that small discrepancies are present between different models. A comparison campaign to evaluate and compare troposphere delays from different ray-tracing software was carried out under the umbrella of the International Association of Geodesy Working Group 4.3.3 in the first half of 2010 with five institutions participating: the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the Groupe de Recherche de Geodesie Spatiale, the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), the University of New Brunswick, and the Institute of Geodesy and Geophysics of the Vienna University of Technology. High-resolution data from the operational analysis of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) for stations Tsukuba (Japan) and Wettzell (Germany) were provided to the participants of the comparison campaign. The data consisted of geopotential differences with respect to mean sea level, temperature, and specific humidity, all at isobaric levels. Additionally, information about the geoid undulations was provided, and the participants computed the ray-traced total delays for 5° elevation angle and every degree in azimuth. In general, we find good agreement between the ray-traced slant factors from the different solutions at 5° elevation if determined from the same pressure level data of the ECMWF. Standard deviations and biases are at the 1-cm level (or significantly better for some combinations). Some of these discrepancies are due to differences in the algorithms and the interpolation approaches. Numerical weather models offer the possibility to compute corrections for a variety of space geodetic applications, including remote sensing techniques like interferometric SAR. Due to the computational complexity, exact ray-tracing is avoided in many cases and mapping approaches are applied to transform vertically integrated delay corrections into slant direction. Such an approach works well as long as lateral atmospheric gradients are small enough to be neglected. But since such an approximation holds only for very rare cases it is investigated how horizontal gradients of different atmospheric constituents can evoke errors caused by the mapping strategy. Moreover, it is discussed how sudden changes of wet refractivity can easily lead to millimeter order biases when simplified methods are applied instead of ray-tracing. By an example, based on real InSAR data, the differences of the various troposphere correction schemes are evaluated and it is shown how the interpretation of the geophysical signals can be affected. Abstract: The term GNSS meteorology refers to the utilization of the Global Navigation Satellite System''s (GNSS) radio signals to derive information about the state of the troposphere. GNSS tomography allows to resolve the spatial structure and temporal behavior of the tropospheric water vapor. This paper presents the verification of GNSS tomography over dense local GNSS network. The paper addresses the problem of obtaining a stable tomographic solution from an ill-conditioned system of linear equations. The main interests are in suitable horizontal and vertical resolution in given conditions. Here the Moore–Penrose pseudo inverse of variance–covariance matrix is used. The minimum constraints solution is obtained with no additional assumptions. The results are validated with the help of simulated weather conditions. Three various scenarios are tested. As general output of this paper the optimal model construction scheme is presented with possible further improvements.
