The tracking performance parameters of the ATLAS Transition Radiation Tracker (TRT) as part of the ATLAS inner detector are described in this paper for different data-taking conditions in proton-proton, proton-lead and lead-lead collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The performance is studied using data collected during the first period of LHC operation (Run 1) and is compared with Monte Carlo simulations. The performance of the TRT, operating with two different gas mixtures (xenon-based and argon-based) and its dependence on the TRT occupancy is presented. These studies show that the tracking performance of the TRT is similar for the two gas mixtures and that a significant contribution to the particle momentum resolution is made by the TRT up to high particle densities.

Abstract This work is dedicated to the study of a technique for hadron identification in the TeV momentum range, based on the simultaneous measurement of the energies and of the emission angles of the Transition Radiation (TR) X-rays with respect to the radiating particles. A detector setup has been built and tested with particles in a wide range of Lorentz factors (from about 1 0 3 to about 4 × 1 0 4 crossing different types of radiators. Studies in many areas of particle and astroparticle physics require a good knowledge of hadron spectra produced at small angles to the primary particle direction, e.g. in the TeV energy range at the LHC. The present work is dedicated to development of a particle identification technique based on the transition radiation produced by highly relativistic particles. Dedicated experimental studies were carried out and simulation models were developed to reproduce experimental data obtained with different prototypes. On the basis of these studies, the possibility of making detectors able to provide hadron composition measurement with high accuracy and identify particles with high efficiency in the forward experiments at the LHC was demonstrated. Two concepts of large scale TRDs are proposed: the straw TRD and the GaAs/straw TRD. They allow the reconstruction of hadron spectra with accuracy about or below 1% and to identify particles with high efficiency in individual events. As an example, suppression of the combinatorial background was demonstrated for the D 0 → K − π + and D ̄ 0 → K + π − decays. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: We review the basic features of transition radiation and how they are used for the design of modern Transition Radiation Detectors (TRD). The discussion will include the various realizations of radiators as well as a discussion of the detection media and aspects of detector construction. With regard to particle identification we assess the different methods for efficient discrimination of different particles and outline the methods for the quantification of this property. Since a number of comprehensive reviews already exist, we predominantly focus on the detectors currently operated at the LHC. To a lesser extent we also cover some other TRDs, which are planned or are currently being operated in balloon or space-borne astro-particle physics experiments. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Transition radiation detectors (TRDs) have been used to identify high-energy particles (in particular, to separate electrons from heavier particles) in accelerator experiments. In space, they have been used to identify cosmic-ray electrons and measure the energies of cosmic-ray nuclei. To date, radiators have consisted of regular configurations of foils with fixed values of foil thickness and spacing (or foam or fiber radiators with comparable average dimensions) that have operated over a relatively restricted range of Lorentz factors. In order to extend the applicability of future TRDs (for example, to identify 0.5–3 TeV pions, kaons, and protons in the far forward region in a future accelerator experiment or to measure the energy spectrum of cosmic-ray nuclei up to 20 TeV/nucleon or higher), there is a need to increase the signal strength and extend the range of Lorentz factors that can be measured in a single detector. A possible approach is to utilize compound radiators consisting of varying radiator parameters. We discuss the case of a compound radiator and derive the yield produced in a TRD with an arbitrary configuration of foil thicknesses and spacings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: A new Transition Radiation Detector (TRD) prototype with high granularity for a high counting rate environment, required by the CBM experiment at the future experimental facility FAIR, GSI-Darmstadt, was designed and built. A solution for such a detector is a multiwire proportional chamber with a minimized drift region, reduced to a cathode – readout pad plane distance of 6mm and a multiwire anode plane in the middle. Results of the source tests and of the in-beam investigations of the rate capability in terms of signal deterioration and position resolution degradation with the increase of the counting rate are presented. Based on the measured deposited energy spectra, the discrimination between electrons and pions as a function of number of layers was estimated by Monte Carlo simulations. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS-02) experiment will be mounted on the International Space Station (ISS) for 3 years to perform precision cosmic particle spectroscopy in space. The search for dark matter candidates requires precise -spectroscopy in the energy range from 10GeV up to 300GeV. Therefore, the dominating p-background has to be reduced by a factor of . This will be achieved with the AMS-02 electromagnetic calorimeter delivering 3–4 orders of magnitude and the transition radiation detector with proton rejection between 100 and 1000. The AMS-02 TRD consists of 20 layers of 6mm diameter straw modules alternating with 20mm layers of polyethylene/polypropylene fleece radiator. The straws are filled with a 80:20 gas mixture at 1.0bar absolute from a recirculating gas system designed to operate years. The straw modules will be operated in proportional mode at a gas gain of 3000. For the readout a dedicated low-power data-acquisition system based on VA analog multiplexers has been developed. The completed construction and assembly of the detector is presented with special emphasis on space qualification, long flight duration aspects and calibration of the AMS-02 TRD. Abstract: A prototype Transition Radiation Detector (TRD) with a new configuration was built and tested. The prototype consists of two individual multiwire proportional chambers (MWPC) that share a thin common central pad readout electrode. Measurements with a 55Fe source and e, and p of 1.5GeV/c showed a very good energy, position resolution and a better discrimination compared to the standard structure with a single MWPC. No significant deterioration of the resolutions is observed up to counting rates of . Abstract: We are developing a novel Transition Radiation Detector (SiTRD) based on silicon strip detectors (SSDs) operated in a magnetic field region. In this way the trajectory of the radiating particle is deflected with respect to the Transition Radiation X-rays that are absorbed in a detector region far away from the particle track. Abstract: Transition Radiation Detectors (TRDs) have been used to study highly relativistic cosmic rays in the last three decades. In recent and in future balloon or space experiments TRDs will be used as energy measuring or threshold devices with large acceptances and long flight durations. Energy measuring TRDs will be required to study the origin of high-energy particles in the cosmic rays at energies near . Threshold TRDs will be used for particle identification which is a key issue for dark matter and SUSY searches relying on positron spectroscopy up to 300GeV. This requires a proton rejection above from the TRDs. A review will be given of the different requirements and experimental solutions for threshold TRDs and the astrophysical significance of their measurements. The Transition Radiation Tracker (TRT) sits at the outermost part of the ATLAS Inner Detector, encasing the Pixel Detector and the Semi-Conductor Tracker (SCT). The TRT combines charged particle track reconstruction with electron identification capability. This is achieved by layers of xenon-filled straw tubes with periodic radiator foils or fibers providing TR photon emission. The design and choice of materials have been optimized to cope with the harsh operating conditions at the LHC, which are expected to lead to an accumulated radiation dose of 10 Mrad and a neutron fluence of up to 2middot1014 n/cm2 after ten years of operation. The TRT comprises a barrel containing 52 000 axial straws and two end-cap parts with 320 000 radial straws. The total of 420 000 electronic channels (two channels per barrel straw) allows continuous tracking with many projective measurements (more than 30 straw hits per track). The assembly of the barrel modules in the US has recently been completed, while the end-cap wheel construction in Russia has reached the 50% mark. After testing at the production sites and shipment to CERN, all modules and wheels undergo a series of quality and conformity measurements. These acceptance tests survey dimensions, wire tension, gas-tightness, high-voltage stability and gas-gain uniformity along each individual straw. The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) is a particle physics detector designed to measure charged cosmic ray spectra up to the TV region, with high-energy photon detection capability up to few hundred GeV. AMS is a superconducting spectrometer with large acceptance, long duration (at least three years for the magnet) and state of the art particle identification techniques. AMS will investigate the composition of cosmic rays with high statistics and provide the most sensitive search for the existence of antimatter nuclei and for the nature of dark matter. The detector is being constructed with an eight-layer Silicon Tracker inside a large superconducting magnet, providing a ~0.8 Tm2 bending power and an acceptance of ~0.4 m2 sr. A Transition Radiation Detector and a three-dimensional Electromagnetic Calorimeter allow for electron, positron and photon identification, while a Time of Flight scintillating system and a Ring Image Cerenkov detector perform independent velocity measurements. This complex apparatus will identify and measure nuclei up to Iron. We will describe the overall detector construction and performance, which is due to be completed by 2006. The spectral-angular distribution of the radiation produced in an almost transparent stack of alternating two types of plates is investigated theoretically in UV region. The numerical results show that with the decrease of the thickness of the plates the angular distribution of the produced Cherenkov-transition radiation becomes much wider. The transition radiation like part of the radiation emitted under small angles vanishes when the dielectric constants of both media differ significantly from 1, i.e. when both types of plates are made of condensed matter. The Cherenkov-like radiation emitted under larger angles has interference parametric oscillations. Possible applications of such radiation are discussed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

PAMELA space mission objective is to flight a satellite-borne magnetic spectrometer built to fulfill the primary scientific goals of detecting antiparticles (antiprotons and positrons) and to measure spectra of particles in cosmic rays. The PAMELA telescope is composed of: a silicon tracker housed in a permanent magnet, a time-of-flight and an anticoincidence system both made of plastic scintillators, a silicon imaging calorimeter, a neutron detector and a Transition Radiation Detector (TRD). The TRD is composed of nine sensitive layers of straw tubes working in proportional mode for a total of 1024 channels. Each layer is interleaved with a radiator plane made of carbon fibers. The TRD characteristics will be described along with its performances studied at both CERN-PS and CERN-SPS facilities, using electrons, pions, muons and protons of different momenta. New developments of pixel detectors based on GaAs sensors offer effective registration of the transition radiation (TR) X-rays and perform simultaneous measurements of their energies and emission angles. This unique feature opens new possibilities for particle identification on the basis of maximum available information about generated TR photons. Results of studies of TR energy-angular distributions using a 500 |j.m thick GaAs sensor attached to a Timepix3 chip are presented. Measurements, analysis techniques and a comparison with Monte Carlo (MC) simulations are described and discussed.

X-ray transition radiation detectors (TRDs) are used for particle identification in both high energy physics and astroparticle physics. In most of the detectors, emission of the X-ray transition radiation (TR) starts at Lorentz factors above γ ∼ 500 and reaches saturation at γ ∼ 2 ÷ 3 ⋅ 1 0 3 . However, many experiments require particle identification up to γ ∼ 1 0 5 , which is very difficult to achieve with conventional detectors. Semiconductor pixel detectors offer a unique opportunity for precise simultaneous measurements of spectral and angular parameters of TR photons. Test beam studies of the energy and the angular distributions of TR photons emitted by electrons and muons of different momenta crossing several types of radiators were performed at the CERN SPS with a 480 μ m thick silicon detector bonded to a Timepix3 chip. High resolution images of the e n e r g y − a n g l e phase space of the TR produced by different radiators were obtained and compared with MC simulations. The characteristic interference patterns are in agreement with the theoretical models with an unprecedented level of details. The studies presented in this paper also show that simultaneous measurements of both the energy and the emission angles of the TR X-rays could be used to enhance the particle identification performances of TRDs.

The tracking performance parameters of the ATLAS Transition Radiation Tracker (TRT) as part of the ATLAS inner detector are described in this paper for different data-taking conditions in proton-proton, proton-lead and lead-lead collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The performance is studied using data collected during the first period of LHC operation (Run 1) and is compared with Monte Carlo simulations. The performance of the TRT, operating with two different gas mixtures (xenon-based and argon-based) and its dependence on the TRT occupancy is presented. In view of the LHC upgrade phases towards the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), the ATLAS experiment plans to upgrade the Inner Detector with an all-silicon system. The n-on-p silicon technology is a promising candidate to achieve a large area instrumented with pixel sensors, since it is radiation hard and cost effective. The paper reports on the performance of novel n-on-p edgeless planar pixel sensors produced by FBK-CMM, making use of the active trench for the reduction of the dead area at the periphery of the device.
