Consumer research has focused on market-mediated efforts to memorialize the past, but this overshadows the issues that arise when consumers, as nonprofessionals, make the past consumable. Consumer-driven memorialization is defined as consumer engagement with traces of the past in memoryscapes of low market-mediation that creates a complex interplay of remembering and forgetting. Based on an ethnographic study of urban exploration, we theorize that consumer-driven memorialization comprises two practices of tracing and trace-making. Tracing involves consumer attempts to recover traces of the past, while trace-making involves consumer attempts to create traces for the future. Consumers enact multiple roles during consumer-driven memorialization: explorers experience the past, archaeologists materialize the past, artists aestheticize the past, and historians narrate the past. The theorization of consumer-driven memorialization offers three contributions. First, the dimensions of consumer-driven memorialization broaden understanding of what constitutes a consumable past in contexts of low market-mediation. Second, we explain how the ideological and material challenges that emerge in consumer-driven memorialization generate a complex interplay between remembering and forgetting. AbstractContrary to common belief, effective communication is not only achieved via verbal exchanges of information. It requires a thoughtful combination of verbal and non-verbal cues since, in some circumstances, verbal communication in healthcare may be impossible, unfavourable or ineffective. The semiotics literature suggests that effective non-verbal communication goes beyond body language and gestures. It also includes the use of objects (i.e. traces) to transmit a message. We call this trace-based communication (TBC). In this perspective paper, we offer some reflections from our experience researching and using trace-based communication for training purposes. Our intention was to bring further awareness to the opportunities that trace-based communication might enable, including opportunities to enhance trainee-supervisor interactions, and consequently inform curriculum design. This paper presents the results of an experimental study of the dynamic characteristics of the process of laser fragmentation/laser-induced fluorescence (LF/LIF) of trinitrotoluene traces on a paper surface under synchronized double-pulse laser irradiation. An Nd:YAG-laser (266 nm) was used for the fragmentation of TNT molecules, while fluorescence excitation of their NO fragments was performed using a KrF laser with a generation line of 247.867 nm in the region of the location of the bandhead of the P12 branch of the γ(0, 2) absorption band of the NO molecule. It was shown that the dissociation process of TNT traces has an inertial character and continues after the cessation of the fragmenting laser pulse. It was found that with the delay values between the fragmenting and probing laser pulses in the region of 200 ns, the efficiency of the LF/LIF method can be increased by 12 times. This paper presents the results of an experimental evaluation of the efficiency of two-pulse LF/LIF compared to single-pulse laser exposure, where the fragmentation of TNT molecules and excitation of their NO fragments were simultaneously performed by KrF laser pulses. The possibility of multiple increases in the efficiency of two-pulse LF/LIF with an increase in the energy density of the fragmenting laser radiation was shown. The obtained results are important in terms of increasing the sensitivity and/or range of the LF/LIF method for remote detection of traces of nitrocompounds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this article, we ask how traces of political violence in the Atacama Desert and in the Sonoran Desert are created and how they are (or are not) transformed into archives. The political violence we study is of different types and takes place in different periods: state violence under the civil–military dictatorship (1973-1990) in the Atacama; violence as a product of migratory policies (from 1994 to the present) of the US–Mexican border in the Sonoran Desert in Arizona; and, mass death and disappearance as the product of successive governments' "war on drugs" (from 2006 to the present) in Sonora, Mexico. This article is based on our academic ethnographic work and volunteering with grassroots organizations. In these three arid spaces, we met different groups: family members and activists searching for political prisoners disappeared in the 1970s by the Pinochet regime; activists searching for migrants, dead or alive, lost in the Sonoran Desert in Arizona; and families digging in the earth, unearthing clandestine graves and hoping one day to find the remains of their loved ones. We argue that these different search practices create traces when these groups uncover what the perpetrators wanted to hide. These processes that create traces, then create archives when the situated and lived experience of searching and tracing is translated into artifacts that can be detached from their context and acquire multiple uses outside their place of production. Jeon, Kang, and Kim defined the Zagier lifts between harmonic weak Maass forms of negative integral weights and half integral weights. These lifts were defined by establishing that traces related to cycle integrals of harmonic weak Maass forms of integral weights appear as Fourier coefficients of harmonic weak Maass forms of half integral weights. For fundamental discriminants d and δ , they studied δ -th Fourier coefficients of the d-th Zagier lift with respect to the condition that d δ is not a perfect square. For d δ being a perfect square, the interpretation of coefficients in terms of traces is not possible due to the divergence of cycle integrals. In this paper, we provide an alternate definition of traces called modified trace in the condition that d δ is a perfect square and interpret such coefficients in terms of the modified trace. The breadth of architectural typologies is waning, or so Perry Kulper, Professor of Architecture at Taubman College, University of Michigan, tells us. Kulper's work has for decades focused on the development of dexterous, agile and creative methodologies for speculating about the possibilities of architecture(s) explored through notions of equivalence, remixing, reinterpreting and reimagining. In 1998, Connes and Moscovici defined the cyclic cohomology of Hopf algebras. In 2010, Khalkhali and Pourkia proposed a braided generalization: to any Hopf algebra H in a braided category B, they associate a paracocyclic object in B. In this paper, we explicitly compute the powers of the paracocyclic operator of this paracocyclic object. Also, we introduce twisted modular pairs in involution for H and derive (co)cyclic modules from them. The low level of detection of money laundering offenses is determined by the high latency of these acts, the involvement of organized criminal groups in their commission and the nature of the actions undertaken to hide the signs of legalization of proceeds obtained through criminal means. The scientific debates in the matter of investigating money laundering offenses are stimulated by a diversity of opinions regarding the forensic characteristics of these acts, which, unfortunately, leaves a negative mark on the effectiveness of the investigation of these offenses. In the theory and practice of forensic science, there are various opinions and positions regarding the forensic characteristics of money laundering offenses and the specifics of the evidence for this category of criminal cases. However, for reasons of lack of uniformity in legal science and practical activity of judicial bodies, radically opposite decisions are taken for analogous situations, which is absolutely inadmissible. In such conditions, a continuous research activity is necessary with the purpose of systematization of scientific materials accumulated in this field and their adaptation to the real conditions of fight against crime. We show that continuous group homomorphisms between unitary groups of unital C*-algebras induce maps between spaces of continuous real-valued affine functions on the trace simplices. Recently, we have introduced and studied all possible four-point compositions (one degree of freedom) and five-point compositions (two degrees of freedom) of ternary relations in analogy with the usual composition of binary relations. In this paper, we introduce and study new types of compositions of ternary relations inspired by the compositions of binary relations introduced by Bandler and Kohout (BK-compositions, for short). Moreover, we pay particular attention to the link between BK-compositions and the traces of binary relations and use it as source of inspiration to introduce traces of ternary relations. In this article, I argue that when movement maps onto a λ-bound variable (a "trace"), that variable must be of an individual semantic type, such as type e or type d. Thus, even though natural language has expressions of higher types, these expressions cannot be represented as traces. When an individual-type trace would not be able to semantically compose in the launching site of movement, the moved element is forced to syntactically reconstruct. The motivation for this constraint on traces comes from a detailed investigation of how DPs in their different semantic guises—entities, properties, and generalized quantifiers—are interpreted when they move. I then argue that strong definite descriptions exhibit the same type-based restriction—namely, they cannot occur in higher-type positions, which I take as evidence for the theory that traces are definite descriptions. In this work, we present a compact LIBS sensor developed for characterization of samples on a crime scene following requirements of law enforcement agencies involved in the project. The sensor operates both in a tabletop mode, for aside measurements of swabbed materials or taken fragments, and in handheld mode where the sensor head is pointed directly on targets at the scene. The sensor head is connected via an umbilical to an instrument box that could be battery-powered and contains also a color camera for sample visualization, illumination LEDs, and pointing system for placing the target in focus. Here we describe the sensor's architecture and functionalities, the optimization of the acquisition parameters, and the results of some LIBS measurements. On nano-plotted traces at silica wafer and in optimized conditions, for most of the elements the detection limits, in term of the absolute element masses, were found to be below 10 picograms. We also show results obtained on some representative materials, like fingerprints, swabbed soil and gunshot residue, varnishes on metal, and coated plastics. The last, solid samples were used to evaluate the depth profiling capabilities of the instrument, where the recognition of all four car paint layers was achieved. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

EBV+ diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) not otherwise specified (NOS) is a new entity confirmed by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2017. In this new entity, the virus may contribute to a tolerogenic microenvironment. Traces of the virus have been described in DLBCL with more sensitive methods, in cases that were originally diagnosed as negative. The aim of this study was to analyze the expression of immune response genes in the tumor microenvironment to disclose the role of the virus and its traces in DLBCL. In 48 DLBCL cases, the expression of immune response genes and the presence of molecules that induce tolerance, such as TIM3, LAG3 and PDL1 by immunohistochemistry (IHC), were studied. To broaden the study of the microenvironment, tumor-associated macrophages (TMAs) were also explored. No significant differences were observed in the expression of immune response genes in the EBV+ DLBCL and those cases that were EBV− DLBCL but that exhibited viral traces, assessed by ViewRNA assay. Only the EBV+ DLBCL cases displayed a significantly higher increase in the expression of CD8 and cytotoxic T cells detected by gene expression analysis, and of PDL1 in tumor cells and in the expression of CD68 in the tumor microenvironment detected by IHC, not observed in those cases with viral traces. The increase in CD8 and cytotoxic T cells, PDL1 and CD68 markers only in EBV+ DLBCL may indicate that traces of viral infection might not have influence in immune response markers. For any three n × n matrices A,B,X over a commutative ring S, we prove that det(A + B − AXB) = det(A + B − BXA) ∈ S. This apparently new formula may be regarded as a “ternary generalization” of Sylvester’s classical determinantal formula det(In − AB) = det(In − BA) for any pair of n × n matrices A,B over S. It is clear that in any rehabilitation works, it is necessary to extract data from the building and analyze this data well to carry out the different studies and conclusions. In this sense, it is necessary to understand the building and its parts in order to determine a more reliable and methodological approach to the conclusions, which, although on many occasions they are still hypotheses, are the most accurate approximation to the true knowledge of the monument. The graphic survey and the generation of documentation such as the geometric and trace study carried out in the process of architectural restoration, allow us to get closer to its authors and determine the character of the monument. The case of the facade of the convent of Benigànim (Valencia) is an example to carry out this methodology.

Cet article expose une méthodologie élaborée pour suivre, sur deux ans, huit artistes d’arts vivants produisant sur une œuvre transmédiatique. Un riche corpus a été constitué grâce à un protocole expérimental de captation visant à maximiser les traces et contrepoints par l’expérimentation de différents dispositifs socio-techniques. Restituées sous forme d’un webdocumentaire-mooc, les traces ont alimenté tout autant la recherche elle-même. Inscrite dans le cadre du projet européen Open Access, une approche diégétique a permis d'envisager la poïèse de l’œuvre en tant que récit, mais aussi comme inscrite dans un univers plus vaste, révélant la convergence des différents dispositifs de médiation. La recherche montre l'importance des liens dialogiques et de l'interaction entre le chercheur et son sujet, ainsi qu'entre l'utilisateur et les dispositifs de restitution. In forensic science, scientific problem‐solving is characterized by the recognition of traces as part of iterative reasoning processes to assign meaning to those traces in order to interpret and reconstruct events. Through a set of fundamental principles, the Sydney Declaration presents a foundation of forensic science through the lens of a scientist. The distinction between a scientist and a technician may require clarification—where a prototypical technician follows a prescribed set of 'standard operating procedures' and may be limited in the interpretation of the resultant data, the scientist utilizes knowledge, skills, experience and imagination to identify the issue at hand and develop lines of inquiry for testing and interpretation. This case report draws on the Sydney Declaration in order to highlight the importance of learning about events from careful consideration of both obvious and less obvious traces. A case involving the assault of a police officer is examined to illustrate the use of the Principles: the problem originally defined by investigators at the scene and later by prosecutors resulted in incorrect analysis and interpretation of traces, hampering efforts at an accurate reconstruction of events. This exercise serves to demonstrate that in order to engage in scientific problem‐solving, it is necessary to apply observation and reasoning in forensic investigations in order to yield an outcome that can be clearly articulated. The overarching goal is to support the drive to improve forensic science practice, education, and research through a case illustrating the value of the principles of the Sydney Declaration. In 2017, the World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed a new entity, Epstein Barr virus (EBV) + Diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL), not otherwise specified (NOS). Traces of EBV transcripts were described in lymphomas, including DLBCL, that were diagnosed as EBV negative by conventional methods. The aim of this study was to detect viral genome by qPCR, as well as LMP1 and EBNA2 transcripts, with a more sensitive method in DLBCL cases from Argentina. Fourteen cases originally considered as EBV negative expressed LMP1 and/or EBNA2 transcripts. In addition, LMP1 and/or EBNA2 transcripts were also observed in bystander cells. However, EBERs+ cells cases by conventional ISH showed higher numbers of cells with LMP1 transcripts and LMP1 protein. In the cases that were EBERS− in tumor cells but with expression of LMP1 and/or EBNA2 transcripts, the viral load was below the limit of detection. This study provides further evidence that EBV could be detected in tumor cells by more sensitive methods. However, higher expression of the most important oncogenic protein, LMP1, as well as increased viral load, are only observed in cases with EBERs+ cells by conventional ISH, suggesting that traces of EBV might not display a key role in DLBCL pathogenesis. The results of a study of the degradation of the cyclotrimethylenetrinitramine (RDX) traces carried in fingerprints depending on the fingerprint number are presented. The surface concentration of the trace was assessed using macrophotography in polarized light and by the method of laser fragmentation/laser-induced fluorescence. A technique for estimating the surface concentration of RDX traces in sweat-fat fingerprints based on pixel-by-pixel scanning of macrophotographs is described. The data of parallel experiments on remote laser detection of RDX particles in fingerprints are presented. A comparison shows that the results of the direct measurements of the total trace area are in good agreement with the LF/LIF response data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bone and teeth, specialised bio-mineralized connective tissues, are left after the typical decomposition process of any vertebrate organism. Their analysis can reveal insights into an organism's life and retrace the history of the remains after death (also known as taphonomy), which ultimately evolves to destruction or fossilization. Studies on the taphonomy of terrestrial mammalian bio-mineralized tissues have mostly focussed on terrestrial depositional environments. Here, samples submerged in the marine environment are investigated. Five archaeological bones of terrestrial mammalian species (pig and oxen) with historically known post-mortem submersion interval (PMSI) (69–316 years) and recovery sites, were analysed macroscopically, microscopically and by microCT. The aim was to characterize for the first time the alterations produced by marine bioeroding sponges, and to discuss their potential interdisciplinary application, with special focus on forensic investigations. The pig samples showed microanatomical preservation (Oxford Histological Index = 3–5), increased total porosity, the presence of old tissue flakes with sponge spicules and traces of bioerosion, such as papillary holes, canals and chambers with microsculptured walls. The presence of such tissue flakes suggested that, at the time of recovery, they may have been free of sediment and inhabited by live sponges. The shape of one internal chamber was identified as the ichnospecies Entobia convoluta as typically produced by shallow, warm-water Cliothosa spp. Surface analyses for further biological evidence remained inconclusive. The taphonomy of skeletal remains has always been relevant in anthropological, natural and forensic studies. In forensics, the role of taphonomy is to contribute to personal identification, cause of death and post-mortem interval (PMI). This study detected the past colonization of terrestrial mammalian bone by marine bioeroding sponges, and aimed to link the taphonomic findings to natural processes and environments. Bioeroding sponges are for the first time confirmed to colonize terrestrial mammalian bone submerged in marine environments, and to promote diagenesis through bioerosion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This essay has the purpose of underlying how an analytic approach about traces, marks and footprints is an important contribution to sociology at digital era. To achieve this goal, the essay takes the central idea of the book "What People Leave Behind Marks, Traces, Footprints and their Relevance to Knowledge Society", like sources to show a first presentation of a sociology of vestiges to elaborate one vision of experience in the sociology of emotions endeavours. We have followed the ideas of this book as an open door to understand how absences, symptoms and messages are the possibility of constitution a sociology of vestige in a digital world. The main argumentative structure is (a) we briefly present the place of trace on social analysis, (b) the epistemic power of etymology of the terms is synthesized, (c) we show the use of traces in classical social research, (d) vestiges as absences, symptoms and messages are schematized, and finally a door towards a sociology of experience through vestiges is open. This essay is an opportunity to draw attention to the importance of elaborating an analysis of the vestiges to understand the human experience in the framework of a sociology on digital emotions. I study the medieval Armenian monuments—churches, monasteries, fortresses, palaces, and more—in what is now eastern Turkey (what many call western Armenia). For me, this region is at once the most beautiful, and most painful, place on earth. I am the grandchild of survivors of the Armenian Genocide of 1915–22, in which Armenians living in the Ottoman Empire suffered mass deportation and extermination: a crime that still goes unrecognized by the Turkish state. Scholars have characterized the Armenian monuments in Turkey as physical traces of their lost homeland. While my scholarship addresses these sites as historical and architectural/artistic phenomena, that work does not often capture the moods and emotions I feel when I am there. I hope to offer here a sense of the more personal dimensions of firsthand work with the buildings and their landscapes.
