This study examines howtourism sociology research has evolved, provides a summary of the pertinent field, and potential directions of interest for future research. To identify key turning points in the history of tourism sociology, such as phases of development, theories, techniques, premises, and outcomes, a systematic literature review was conducted. Using several keywords, the Web of Science and Scopus databases were searched on February 16, 2024, yielding 799 articles. With consideration of the PRISMA methodology, the research analysis process involved 19 scientific papers. The results show that mass and authenticity were the primary concerns of the initial sociological approaches to tourism. Furthermore, the field has progressed significantly because of phenomena such as tourist typologies and the tourist gaze. However, most researchers appear to be preoccupied with debates over the evolution of tourism theory, whether tourism is a discipline, and the need for scientific methodologies. Therefore, to advance the field and set itself apart from other academic specialties, tourism academics must resolve a few common problems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is argued in this letter that tourism studies, as an autonomous field of academic study, can better position itself in the COVID-19 era as a "pandiscipline" which synthesizes concepts and theories from other disciplines to better describe and explain tourism-related phenomena. Universal core tourism structures and processes, in turn, are captured in "tourisation theory," which describes the increasing embeddedness of tourism in places as manifested in six tentative propositions and associated impulse, amplification, ubiquity, ascendancy, concentration, and endorsement effects. Western-centrism in tourism theory is acknowledged within the academic community. However, there is little consideration of its implications for transnational education, which might include the delivery of degrees from Western universities in non-Western contexts. In theoretical studies on the typology of tourists, various criteria for their identification can be found. A drawback of this approach is the lack of one common concept of tourist division, which would allow for comparing research results at various academic and marketing centers. There is a definition problem of tourism and the tourist themselves, the concepts often differing from each other, thus, there is no common ground on which the theories of the separation and division of tourists can be built. In the presented publication, a review of selected, varying tourist types have been conducted. Typologies of tourists are based on various criteria, ranging from sociological and psychological to demographic, geographic, economic, marketing and others often having an inter- disciplinary basis. First of all, attempts were made to show the diversity of typological concepts presented in the world. They are used in scientific research but only refer to a small group of respondents and it is difficult to compare the results with other results based on other divisions. In conclusion, a new, proprietary division has been proposed, which, it seems, could be used by various academic centers, allowing greater possibilities for the comparison of research results in the area of tourism. It is based on the awareness and subjective understanding of the phenomenon of tourism which is interpreted differently in many areas and environments.

The scientific problem undertaken is the importance of castles for the functioning of cultural tourism in the opinion of the inhabitants of Central Europe. What is the use of medieval monuments for the art of fortifications today? The main method of research is a diagnostic survey carried out with the use of a survey on a group of N, important according to the statistics in the number of n = 614 respondents. Statistical analyzes were performed using Statistica version 13.3. On the basis of the presented research results, it can be concluded that the interests of the respondents are very broad and varied. Taking into account the relatively large group of respondents, the research results can be considered reliable. An important goal was supplementing the knowledge, meeting the needs of learning about history, and getting acquainted with the prevailing historical tradition in castles of Europe. It has now been 20 years since Adrian Franklin and Mike Crang's The trouble with tourism and travel theory? introduced the first volume of Tourist Studies. In the year of 2001, business-oriented approaches to studying tourism were thriving due to the rapid growth of tourism. In their diagnosis of tourism research of the day, Franklin and Crang pointed to the lack of theory and "a tendency for studies to follow a template, repeating and reinforcing a specific approach" (p. 6) as the fundamental trouble with the academic commitment to tourism. The twentieth anniversary issue of Tourist Studies offers an occasion to return to this analysis of tourism research and explore what the "trouble" with knowing and thinking about tourism might be today? Where do we go, where do we look, and whom do we listen to and learn from to know about tourism? And how may we work to improve our sensibilities toward knowing tourism? [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Research on tourism enclaves has relied mainly on topographical understandings of the phenomenon. The focus has been on the ontic, that which is or exists instead of the relational qualities or properties of tourism enclaves. Topographical conceptions thus tend to simplify enclavic processes and attributes that are much more complex than meets the eye. In this article, we make the case for topological understandings of tourism enclaves, based on a relational ontology, as a complement. We thereby strive to offer more nuanced conceptions of tourism enclaves. We depart from Agamben's political ontology to illustrate our claim. Seen topologically, tourism enclaves are not simply spaces marked-off from the norm, but rather constituents of the norm. Tourism enclaves need to be theorized as 'prototypes' or 'laboratories' of new subjectivities (ways of being, relating, and experiencing the world). The tourist thus emerges as a model figure of biopolitics in the contemporary, the norm rather than the exception. The tourist is not that which is abandoned by the sovereign in the manner of Agamben, but rather a free exilant, a subject that self-willingly chooses abandonment. We deploy topological concepts, like Agamben's the ban, the camp, and state of exception. Such a conception, we argue, widens the ontological register or horizon of tourism theory. Preservation Park is a site in downtown Oakland, California, where original houses from the late nineteenth century have been restored in a re-creation of a period neighbourhood. This article begins by framing the site as a themed environment, or 'themescape', in which the act of historical preservation is undermined by various modern interventions that fabricate the past, such as the relocation of many of the houses from their original locations and the addition of idealized faux-Victorian details. Using the Developer's Guideline, the principal text in the design of the site and contemporaneous city planning documents, the article identifies how the artificial reproduction of Victorian Oakland was intended to increase investment and reverse economic decline in the city centre. Drawing on theories of tourism and gentrification, the article analyses the design and theming of Preservation Park as economic devices and aesthetic entities that restrict movement, create a visual experience and use various signifiers of private space to make the site exclusive and valuable. These readings are then employed to contextualize the site's racial and social history, leading to a discussion of the relationship between the economic objectives, the theming and the actual usage of Preservation Park and similar sites. This introduction to the Special Issue describes and reviews the development of the Critical Tourism Studies Network and its unfolding values-led humanist and transformative perspective. It defines its philosophical roots and its inquiry-learning-action nexus, before briefly outlining the evolution and trajectory of tourism studies as a field of inquiry to provide context for the critical turn. The introduction concludes by summarizing the approaches and methodologies employed in the six articles of the collection, all of which provide both insights into the current state of critical tourism studies and glimpses of some of the challenges that lie ahead for the field of tourism studies. The Anthropocene is a proposed term for a new phase in the history of both humanity and the Earth – a geological epoch in which their respective forces intertwine on a planetary scale. As a concept, the Anthropocene has recently gained momentum also in the humanities and the social sciences, but not yet in Tourism Studies. The aim of this paper is to introduce the concept of the Anthropocene to Tourism Studies and to explore and outline scientific, political, and ethical challenges. Abstract: This article is concerned with the place of the family in tourism research. In an attempt at situating tourism theory, three discourses of tourism are examined in order to see what kind of articulations of the familiar they epitomize. This article is also concerned with developing theoretical constructs that are sensitive to the familiar character of tourism. Making space for the family in tourism research requires the reappraisal of domesticity and thick sociality in tourism. The article makes references to research on mass tourism in Menorca to discuss the implications of the re-socialization of tourism theory. The idealized notions of the nuclear family that are formed and performed on coastal resorts are contrasted to the complex realities of family life. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: It might appear initially that the diverse fields of ceramics and tourism do not have much in common. However, printed pictorial ceramic objects have been widely available since the 1860s as touristic souvenirs. The relationships between art and tourism, however, have been explicitly examined by only a few tourism researchers. This paper critically examines how tourism research can actively and innovatively inform artistic practices. It thus explores the relationships between the production of ceramic art work, souvenirs, photography and tourism. In so doing it challenges the conventional opposition between art and souvenirs through the integration of popular tourism imagery and the distortion of souvenir shapes. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Given that tourism is an “earthly business”, why is it that the Earth rarely explicitly appears in tourism studies and tourism theory? In an attempt to grapple with this paradox, this paper seeks to contribute to a conceptual re-cognition of the Earth in tourism theory by probing some theoretical obstacles and possibilities. The paper demonstrates how the Earth has been conceptually erased in tourism theory by a privileging of the mapping of tourism and tourists onto the reference plane of the social. As an alternative the paper seeks to provide a geo-philosophically informed conceptualisation of the Earth as a primary plane of reference of which tourism is a particular form of de/re-territorialisation. This article argues that in most tourism studies the African has been stereotypically cast as a "touree" but not "tourer." As such, mainstream theory in tourism is a product of a predominantly Western ethnocentric view of the tourist as a Westerner. In recent years, however, some authors have started to question modem-man-in-general approaches to the study of tourism, highlighting their failure to recognize the interface between culture and tourism. The article argues further that authenticity, for example, has been at the center of tourism sociological debate for decades, yet to date no attempts have been made to provide an African viewpoint. Indeed, the lack of African tourist studies which investigate culture specific meanings in relation to central debates in tourism has created an "African perspective gap" in tourism theory in general. The global spread of mass tourism is often understood in terms of the diffusion of practices first developed by English tourists and driven by the seemingly universal processes of urbanization and industrialization. This article offers a postcolonial critique of this approach, arguing it fails to appreciate the political and cultural dynamics of local adoption and remains blind to the role of alternative, indigenous practices. Moreover, as mass tourism practices are often viewed as expressions of modernity, societies are understood as modern only to the degree that they adopt northern European styles of leisure. Using Spain and Tunisia as examples, the article shows how the spread of beach tourism to the Mediterranean was shaped by geopolitical factors and imposed cultural and architectural expressions of modernity ill-suited to local contexts. Suggesting the value of alternative approaches, the article discusses forms of domestic coastal tourism in Morocco that express a modern hybrid Moroccan identity, in which a popular Islamic traditional ritual is performed and reinvented within the space of leisure beach tourism. Globalization has become the most popular term in social sciences since the beginning of the 21st century. The phenomenon is suffering under the paradox of inclusiveness and it is becoming clouded and useless. An effort to structure and focus on the meaning of the term is a necessity. The former debate between globalists and antiglobalists has shown to be a misleading one, and it is being surpassed by the study of three theoretical tendencies and approaches to the phenomenon: die hyperglobalist, the traditionalist, and the transformationalist. All three approaches can be seen in the understanding of tourism today. The first two have a methodological problem as they are rooted in the methodologies of nationalism as well as on a preconception of die global world. The transformationalist approach to globalization is to be applied as the theoretical frame of globalization and tourism, used in a dialogic and systemic way of understanding tourism development and tourists as today's global citizens.
