Preventing the progressive deterioration of works of art over time is a topic of great interest to collectors and museums. With this aim, time capsules where environmental conditions remain unchanged are well known for preserving art. In this paper, a prototype of an IoT time capsule is presented with a focus on low cost in order to make it accessible to private collectors or small museums with tight budgets. Valencian 'sainetes' (small plays), which are considered materials of artistic interest, have been placed in a "time capsule", which is a manually made container with insulating materials for keeping small pieces for a long time. Environmental control has been performed with a low-cost microcontroller, sensors and actuators connected to a free online IoT platform. This platform recorded data and made decisions based on these data, sending cooling or heating orders to an environmental control system. The results obtained are very satisfactory and open interesting perspectives for future research. This paper is motivated by the Time Capsule Project (TCP) of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE). The historical developments of geotechnical risk and reliability are reviewed for the past six decades. The key features distinguishing geotechnical and structural engineering are the natural origin of the ground and the lack of sufficient data to characterize the ground using the more familiar frequentist interpretation of probability. For the first feature, random field theory is applied to model spatial variability and the random finite element method or other methods are proposed for solving soil-structure interaction problems in spatially variable soil. For the second feature, compilation of databases is essential to serve as priors for Bayesian updating and more recently for Bayesian machine learning. There is a gradual evolution towards reliability-based design because probabilistic methods offer a pathway to address big data and implement data-centric geotechnics as one step towards digital transformation. Given the complexity of the natural ground (known unknowns can be large and there are unknown unknowns), engineering judgment remains important to bridge the gap between theory and practice. Samuel Richardson’s use of the motif of the ouroboros in Clarissa (1747–1748), his masterpiece, has continued to baffle both his readership and his critics for 275 years now. The surprise and the puzzle derive from the sharp difference between the two traditions that have thus been forced to meet: Richardson’s conservative Anglican Christianity (of the Puritan kind) and the pagan tradition of Hermetic alchemy of Egyptian extraction. The following paper explores dimensions that the ouroboric symbol has from the perspective of alchemy, myth and science, as well as the reasons Richardson may have had in making such a bold choice in his famous million-word novel. Special reference is made to Clarissa’s Paper X and letter to Lovelace (Volume 5), in which she sketches something like a bill of indictment and list of last wishes before execution. We conclude that: 1) the Ouroboros, a cultural legacy of immeasurably old origins, is a versatile symbol of possibly quite advanced knowledge of various transformations; 2) Clarissa is a female embodiment of the Ouroboros (or transmutation matrix); 3) the novel partakes of the nature of the alchemical Ouroboros, by becoming similar to a “time capsule,” meant by Richardson to be repeatedly “unburied” by future generations, who will in their minds resurrect Clarissa and reopen her “horizons,” again and again. The fascination with Clarissa is thus perhaps to grow as time goes by, because every new generation will likely rediscover anew what it describes: the fierce battle between the head and the heart. The first feature film made about the design and deployment of the atomic bomb, The Beginning or the End (1947), begins with fake newsreel footage depicting the burial in a time capsule of a copy of the film and a projector to show it on. The scene, with its funereal overtones yet grim optimism that, even in the face of catastrophic destruction, the germ of civilization will endure, recalls the ceremonies surrounding the interment of the Westinghouse time capsule at the New York World's Fair in 1939. Time capsules, this article argues, stand in a complex relation to war and temporality, seeking to at once anticipate and work through the challenge posed to futurity by the threat of global conflict. As a container, the capsule attempts to deliver and control the reception of a legible inventory of the present, yet the principle of selection and the impossibility of predicting how information might be received in the deep future – if it is received at all – threatens this aim. The dilemma faced by time capsule curators is, we argue with reference to William Burroughs' and Brion Gysin's so-called cut-up method of writing, one of control. By reading the time capsule through the cut-up, anticipated catastrophe can be seen to be functioning proleptically in the present and already active as a challenge to the capsule as proof against disaster. In this study, an activity has been implemented towards “time, continuity and change” learning strand of the 5th grade social studies curriculum. The first level of the activity was done in November 2015 and the second level of the activity was done in December 2016. The activity was implemented at a secondary school in Ordu. This activity aimed to help students see the change and development of themselves and their friends in social fields, environment, country and world. Accordingly, using the material list that was prepared with the students, a time capsule was prepared, sealed and hid to reopen one year later. The time capsule helped students recognize physical changes in them through a hand print on a paper. Besides, the students understood that their social environment and taste of lives changed dramatically. They noted the changes in our country with the help of economy section of the newspapers.

Recent advances in data storage technologies, such as optical storage and DNA storage, allow data storage for timescales of millions to billions of years. Alongside these developments, initiatives such as Lunar Mission One, the Long Now Foundation and the Human Document Project have promoted the long-term storage of data in order to foster public engagement and to preserve important data for future generations. However, proper concepts for long-term data storage in space are currently missing which match to the needs of stakeholders via the newly available technology. This paper explores the rationales for data storage over millions to billions of years in space and develops three ‘time capsule’ concepts addressing specific stakeholder needs. First, existing stakeholders are identified and categorized with respect to their motivation. Stakeholder needs are interpreted from statements of motivation. As key motivations, “encouraging global public engagement”, “moving humanity toward becoming a dual-planet species”, “embracing and constraining the information age”, and “allowing storage of information for a very long time” are identified. These needs are then arranged hierarchically for each stakeholder and the most prevalent needs are selected. Metrics are then assigned to each need. One or more storage technologies and storage locations are recommended for each case study. A key technology for storage durations of millions to billions of years seems to be digital DNA storage. Future work aims at developing more detailed storage concepts along with the interactions with the space system into which it is going to be integrated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper presents a program to construct a non-relativistic relational Bohmian theory, that is, a theory of N moving point-like particles that dispenses with space and time as fundamental background structures. The relational program proposed is based on the best-matching framework originally developed by Julian Barbour. In particular, the paper focuses on the conceptual problems that arise when trying to implement such a program. It is argued that pursuing a relational strategy in the Bohmian context leads to a more parsimonious ontology than that of standard Bohmian mechanics without betraying the original motivations for adopting a primitive ontology approach to quantum physics. It is also shown how a relational Bohmian approach might clarify the issue of the timelessness of the dynamics resulting from the quantization of a classical relational system of particles.
