Advanced digital technologies have rapidly been integrated into prosthodontics to improve the digital workflow for prosthetic rehabilitation. The integration of 3D datasets acquired from various imaging sources such as intraoral scanners and facial optical scanners allows the creation of virtual patients to perform presurgical simulation and prosthetic rehabilitation. The presented technique introduced a straightforward protocol for aligning intraoral scans (Trios 4, 3Shape) to optical face scans (Face Hunter, Zirkonzahn) using a global best-fit algorithm of 3D evaluation software (GOM Inspect). Nasal geometry data were used as the matching reference to produce virtual dental patients. This integration protocol ensured that the intraoral scanner (Trios 4, 3Shape) was used not only to scan dental arches but also used effectively to scan the nose. These scans along with professional facial scans can be successfully aligned to produce virtual dental patients. As only a single fully dentate patient case with an alignment deviation of 243.6 µm was used, further research to evaluate the accuracy of this protocol is needed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

OBJECTIVE: Increased subcutaneous and visceral adipose tissue (SAT/VAT) volume is associated with risk for cardiometabolic diseases. This work aimed to develop and evaluate automated abdominal SAT/VAT segmentation on longitudinal MRI in adults with overweight/obesity using attention-based competitive dense (ACD) 3D U-Net and 3D nnU-Net with full field-of-view volumetric multi-contrast inputs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 920 adults with overweight/obesity were scanned twice at multiple 3 T MRI scanners and institutions. The first scan was divided into training/validation/testing sets (n = 646/92/182). The second scan from the subjects in the testing set was used to evaluate the generalizability for longitudinal analysis. Segmentation performance was assessed by measuring Dice scores (DICE-SAT, DICE-VAT), false negatives (FN), and false positives (FP). Volume agreement was assessed using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). RESULTS: ACD 3D U-Net achieved rapid ( 0.997) in longitudinal analysis. DISCUSSION: ACD 3D U-Net and 3D nnU-Net can be automated tools to quantify abdominal SAT/VAT volume rapidly, accurately, and longitudinally in adults with overweight/obesity.

The dry mass and the orientation of biomolecules can be imaged without a label by measuring their permittivity tensor (PT), which describes how biomolecules affect the phase and polarization of light. Three-dimensional (3D) imaging of PT has been challenging. We present a label-free computational microscopy technique, PT imaging (PTI), for the 3D measurement of PT. PTI encodes the invisible PT into images using oblique illumination, polarization-sensitive detection and volumetric sampling. PT is decoded from the data with a vectorial imaging model and a multi-channel inverse algorithm, assuming uniaxial symmetry in each voxel. We demonstrate high-resolution imaging of PT of isotropic beads, anisotropic glass targets, mouse brain tissue, infected cells and histology slides. PTI outperforms previous label-free imaging techniques such as vector tomography, ptychography and light-field imaging in resolving the 3D orientation and symmetry of organelles, cells and tissue. We provide open-source software and modular hardware to enable the adoption of the method.

SIGNIFICANCE: Information about the spatial organization of fibers within a nerve is crucial to our understanding of nerve anatomy and its response to neuromodulation therapies. A serial block-face microscopy method [three-dimensional microscopy with ultraviolet surface excitation (3D-MUSE)] has been developed to image nerves over extended depths ex vivo. To routinely visualize and track nerve fibers in these datasets, a dedicated and customizable software tool is required. AIM: Our objective was to develop custom software that includes image processing and visualization methods to perform microscopic tractography along the length of a peripheral nerve sample. APPROACH: We modified common computer vision algorithms (optic flow and structure tensor) to track groups of peripheral nerve fibers along the length of the nerve. Interactive streamline visualization and manual editing tools are provided. Optionally, deep learning segmentation of fascicles (fiber bundles) can be applied to constrain the tracts from inadvertently crossing into the epineurium. As an example, we performed tractography on vagus and tibial nerve datasets and assessed accuracy by comparing the resulting nerve tracts with segmentations of fascicles as they split and merge with each other in the nerve sample stack. RESULTS: We found that a normalized Dice overlap ( Dice norm ) metric had a mean value above 0.75 across several millimeters along the nerve. We also found that the tractograms were robust to changes in certain image properties (e.g., downsampling in-plane and out-of-plane), which resulted in only a 2% to 9% change to the mean Dice norm values. In a vagus nerve sample, tractography allowed us to readily identify that subsets of fibers from four distinct fascicles merge into a single fascicle as we move ∼ 5    mm along the nerves length. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, we demonstrated the feasibility of performing automated microscopic tractography on 3D-MUSE datasets of peripheral nerves. Gamma-prefoldin (γPFD), a unique chaperone found in the extremely thermophilic methanogen Methanocaldococcus jannaschii, self-assembles into filaments in vitro, which so far have been observed using transmission electron microscopy and cryo-electron microscopy. Utilizing three-dimensional stochastic optical reconstruction microscopy (3D-STORM), here we achieve ∼20 nm resolution by precisely locating individual fluorescent molecules, hence resolving γPFD ultrastructure both in vitro and in vivo. Through CF647 NHS ester labeling, we first demonstrate the accurate visualization of filaments and bundles with purified γPFD. Next, by implementing immunofluorescence labeling after creating a 3xFLAG-tagged γPFD strain, we successfully visualize γPFD in M. jannaschii cells. Through 3D-STORM and two-color STORM imaging with DNA, we show the widespread distribution of filamentous γPFD structures within the cell. These findings provide valuable insights into the structure and localization of γPFD, opening up possibilities for studying intriguing nanoscale components not only in archaea but also in other microorganisms.

PURPOSE: To investigate the feasibility and application of a novel imaging technique, a three-dimensional dual adiabatic inversion recovery prepared ultrashort echo time (3D DIR-UTE) sequence, for high contrast assessment of cartilaginous endplate (CEP) imaging with head-to-head comparisons between other UTE imaging techniques. METHOD: The DIR-UTE sequence employs two narrow-band adiabatic full passage (AFP) pulses to suppress signals from long T2 water (e.g., nucleus pulposus (NP)) and bone marrow fat (BMF) independently, followed by multispoke UTE acquisition to detect signals from the CEP with short T2 relaxation times. The DIR-UTE sequence, in addition to three other UTE sequences namely, an IR-prepared and fat-saturated UTE (IR-FS-UTE), a T1-weighted and fat-saturated UTE sequence (T1w-FS-UTE), and a fat-saturated UTE (FS-UTE) was used for MR imaging on a 3 T scanner to image six asymptomatic volunteers, six patients with low back pain, as well as a human cadaveric specimen. The contrast-to-noise ratio of the CEP relative to the adjacent structures-specifically the NP and BMF-was then compared from the acquired images across the different UTE sequences. RESULTS: For asymptomatic volunteers, the DIR-UTE sequence showed significantly higher contrast-to-noise ratio values between the CEP and BMF (CNRCEP-BMF) (19.9 ± 3.0) and between the CEP and NP (CNRCEP-NP) (23.1 ± 1.7) compared to IR-FS-UTE (CNRCEP-BMF: 17.3 ± 1.2 and CNRCEP-NP: 19.1 ± 1.8), T1w-FS-UTE (CNRCEP-BMF: 9.0 ± 2.7 and CNRCEP-NP: 10.4 ± 3.5), and FS-UTE (CNRCEP-BMF: 7.7 ± 2.2 and CNRCEP-NP: 5.8 ± 2.4) for asymptomatic volunteers (all P-values

Purpose: To compare the 3D accuracy of three scanning strategies and conventional impressions using an edentulous model with six implants. Materials and Methods: An edentulous maxillary master model was fabricated with six equigingival internal connection implants at 0 degrees of angulation. Ten conventional open-tray splinted implant-level impressions were made and poured in stone. A master model and conventional casts were digitized with a reference scanner. Digital impressions were made by calibrated clinicians with a TRIOS 3 intraoral scanner ([IOS] 3Shape) according to three scanning strategies: DIG1 (occlusal-palatal-lingual), DIG2 (S-type motion from buccal to palatal), and DIG3 (scanning two half arches and connecting them at the midline). Each technique was repeated 10 times on the master model. Deviations from the STL datasets (N = 40) were compared to those of the reference master model using the Hexagon Metrology software system PC-DMIS CAD++. Linear distortions (dX, dY, dZ), global linear distortion (dR), and angular distortions (Absdθx, Absdθy) were calculated. Kruskal-Wallis test and mixed linear and logistic regression models were used to compare the original and binary distortion measures between the techniques. Results: The mean dR ranged from 91 μm (conventional method) to 183 μm (DIG1). The mean angular distortion ranged from 0.20 degrees (Absdθx for DIG2) to 0.69 degrees (Absdθy for DIG3). No scan pattern resulted in a more accurate reproduction in any of the measured parameters than the conventional impression method. There were significant differences between the methods for all distortion measures. Conclusions: No group reproduced the 3D position of the six-implant master model below the thresholds for both global linear and angular distortions. In the realm of neuroscience, mapping the three-dimensional (3D) neural circuitry and architecture of the brain is important for advancing our understanding of neural circuit organization and function. This study presents a novel pipeline that transforms mouse brain samples into detailed 3D brain models using a collaborative data analytics platform called Texera. The user-friendly Texera platform allows for effective interdisciplinary collaboration between team members in neuroscience, computer vision, and data processing. Our pipeline utilizes the tile images from a serial two-photon tomography/TissueCyte system, then stitches tile images into brain section images, and constructs 3D whole-brain image datasets. The resulting 3D data supports downstream analyses, including 3D whole-brain registration, atlas-based segmentation, cell counting, and high-resolution volumetric visualization. Using this platform, we implemented specialized optimization methods and obtained significant performance enhancement in workflow operations. We expect the neuroscience community can adopt our approach for large-scale image-based data processing and analysis.

The microvasculature facilitates gas exchange, provides nutrients to cells, and regulates blood flow in response to stimuli. Vascular abnormalities are an indicator of pathology for various conditions, such as compromised vessel integrity in small vessel disease and angiogenesis in tumors. Traditional immunohistochemistry enables the visualization of tissue cross-sections containing exogenously labeled vasculature. Although this approach can be utilized to quantify vascular changes within small fields of view, it is not a practical way to study the vasculature on the scale of whole organs. Three-dimensional (3D) imaging presents a more appropriate method to visualize the vascular architecture in tissue. Here we describe the complete protocol that we use to characterize the vasculature of different organs in mice encompassing the methods to fluorescently label vessels, optically clear tissue, collect 3D vascular images, and quantify these vascular images with a semi-automated approach. To validate the automated segmentation of vascular images, one user manually segmented one hundred random regions of interest across different vascular images. The automated segmentation results had an average sensitivity of 83±11% and an average specificity of 91±6% when compared to manual segmentation. Applying this procedure of image analysis presents a method to reliably quantify and characterize vascular networks in a timely fashion. This procedure is also applicable to other methods of tissue clearing and vascular labels that generate 3D images of microvasculature.

The bin packing problem is a classical problem widely existing in practical applications, such as shipping, warehousing and manufacturing industries. Whereas current research mainly focuses on reducing packing costs by optimizing the packing scheme, this study explores a novel approach by redesigning the bin sizes to fit the items ready to be packed. Specifically, this study considers a general three-dimensional open dimension problem (3D-ODP) where all dimensions, i.e. length, width and height, of a number of heterogeneous bin types are unknown and need to be decided. Based on the designed bin types, the corresponding packing scheme with minimal total costs is optimized, which is referred to as a three-dimensional multiple-bin-size bin packing problem (3D-MBSBPP). The combination of 3D-ODP and 3D-MBSBPP is redefined as a three-dimensional bin design and packing problem (3D-BDPP), for which a two-layer heuristic is developed. It consists of an outer heuristic framework (i.e. genetic algorithm or differential evolution algorithm) to design bin types, and an inner deterministic constructive heuristic (i.e. placement algorithm) to generate an effective solution for the 3D-MBSBPP. Extensive simulation tests on the classical benchmark and a case study derived from an e-commerce company are conducted to verify the algorithms and deduce managerial insights. Purpose: To evaluate the existing evidence regarding the comparison between 2 and 3D systems in Total Laparoscopic Hysterectomy (TLH) in terms of surgical outcomes. Methods: A systematic review of electronic databases, including PubMed/MEDLINE and Web of Science, was conducted to identify relevant studies comparing 2D and 3D systems in TLH. The search employed a combination of Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) terms and keywords related to the topic. Studies meeting predefined criteria were included, while case reports and studies not directly comparing 2D and 3D systems were excluded. Two independent reviewers evaluated study eligibility and performed quality assessment. The quantitative synthesis was conducted using meta-analysis techniques. Results: A statistically significant longer operation time in the 2D group compared to the 3D group (7 studies, mean difference [MD]: 13.67, 95% confidence interval [CI] 9.35–18.00, I2 = 16%). However, no statistically significant differences were found between the groups in terms of vaginal cuff closure time (2 studies, MD: 3.22, CI − 6.58–13.02, I2 = 96%), complication rate (7 studies, odds ratio [OD]: 1.74, CI 0.70–4.30, I2 = 0%), blood loss (3 studies, MD: 2.92, CI − 15.44–21.28, I2 = 0%), and Hb drop (3 studies, MD: 0.17, CI − 0.08–0.42, I2 = 1%). Conclusion: Our results revealed a significant difference favoring 3D systems in operation time, while clinical outcomes between the two systems were found to be comparable in TLH. However, further research, particularly prospective studies with larger cohorts and longer-term follow-up, along with economic analyses, is needed to provide clinicians and healthcare decision-makers with essential guidance for practice and resource allocation. The purpose of this study was to compare the formation of organoid structures by co-culturing of human endometrial mesenchymal stem cells (hEnMSCs) and mouse germinal vesicle (GV) oocytes in hanging drop and sodium alginate hydrogel co-culture methods. Following the preparation of hEnMSCs and partially denuded mouse germinal vesicle oocytes, they were co-cultured in hanging drop and sodium alginate hydrogel systems as two experimental groups. In respected control groups the hEnMSCs were cultured without oocytes. The organoid formation was evaluated under the inverted microscope in all studied groups during the culture period. The hematoxylin and eosin, alcian blue, periodic acid Schiff, and Masson's trichrome methods, were applied for morphological evaluation and extracellular matrix components staining such as glycosaminoglycan, carbohydrate, and collagen fibers. In addition, the germ cell-like characteristics within the organoid structures were investigated via alkaline phosphatase activity immunocytochemistry for DEAD-box polypeptide 4 (DDX4), and the expression of octamer-binding transcription factor 4 (OCT4), DDX4, and synaptonemal complex protein 3 (SYCP3) genes by real-time RT-PCR. The culturing of hEnMSCs in the hanging drop method led to the formation of organoid structures while this structure was not seen in sodium alginate hydrogel culture. The mean diameter of organoid structures was increased during 4 days of culture in both the experimental and control groups in the hanging drop method, reaching 675.50 ± 18.55 µm and 670.25 ± 21.40 µm, respectively (P < 0.05). Morphological staining indicated some large ovoid cells with euchromatin nuclei in the experimental group, whereas, in the control group cells showed dark and dense nuclei. The extracellular matrix components were deposited in organoid structures in both control and experimental groups. The positive alkaline phosphatase activity and immunocytochemistry for DDX4 confirmed the presence of germ cell-like in the experimental group. Real-time RT-PCR showed a significant increase in the expression of DDX4 and SYCP3 genes and a decrease in the level of OCT4 expression in the experimental group compared with its controls. This study successfully generated organoid structures by co-culture of hEnMSCs and oocytes in the hanging drop method and the hEnMSCs could be differentiated into germ cell-like. Background: This review aimed to critically appraise the most recent orthopedic literature around cone beam weightbearing computed tomography (WBCT), summarizing what evidence has been provided so far and identifying the main research trends in the area. Methods: This scoping review was performed on studies published between January 2013 and December 2023 on the Pubmed database. All studies (both clinical and nonclinical) in which WBCT had been used were critically analyzed to extract the aim (or aims) of the study, and the main findings related to the role of this imaging modality in the diagnostic pathway. Results: Out of 1759 studies, 129 were selected. One hundred five manuscripts (81%) dealt with elective orthopedic conditions. The majority of the analyses (88 studies; 84%) were performed on foot and ankle conditions, while 13 (12%) studies looked at knee pathologies. There was a progressive increase in the number of studies published over the years. Progressive Collapsing Foot Deformity (22 studies; 25%) and Hallux Valgus (19 studies; 21%) were frequent subjects. Twenty-four (19%) manuscripts dealt with traumatic conditions. A particular interest in syndesmotic injuries was documented (12 studies; 60%). Conclusions: In this review, we documented an increasing interest in clinical applications of weightbearing CT in the orthopedic field between 2013 and 2023. The majority of the analyses focused on conditions related to the foot and the ankle; however, we found several works investigating the value of WBCT on other joints (in particular, the knee). Background: In acetabular fracture surgery, understanding the biomechanical behaviour of fractures and implants is beneficial for clinical decision-making about implant selection and postoperative (early) weightbearing protocols. This study outlines a novel approach for creating finite element models (FEA) from actual clinical cases. Our objectives were to (1) create a detailed semi-automatic three-dimensional FEA of a patient with a transverse posterior wall acetabular fracture and (2) biomechanically compare patient-specific implants with manually bent off-the-shelf implants. Methods: A computational study was performed in which we developed three finite element models. The models were derived from clinical imaging data of a 20-year-old male with a transverse posterior wall acetabular fracture treated with a patient-specific implant. This implant was designed to fit the patient's anatomy and fracture configuration, allowing for optimal placement and predetermined screw trajectories. The three FEA models included an intact hemipelvis for baseline comparison, one with a fracture fixated with a patient-specific implant, and another with a conventional implant. Two loading conditions were investigated: standing up and peak walking forces. Von Mises stress and displacement patterns in bone, implants and screws were analysed to assess the biomechanical behaviour of fracture fixation with either a patient-specific versus a conventional implant. Results: The finite element models demonstrated that for a transverse posterior wall type fracture, a patient-specific implant resulted in lower peak stresses in the bone (30 MPa and 56 MPa) in standing-up and peak walking scenario, respectively, compared to the conventional implant model (46 MPa and 90 MPa). The results suggested that patient-specific implant could safely withstand standing-up and walking after surgery, with maximum von Mises stresses in the implant of 156 MPa and 371 MPa, respectively. The results from the conventional implant indicate a likelihood of implant failure, with von Mises stresses in the implant (499 MPa and 1000 MPa) exceeding the yield stress of stainless steel. Conclusion: This study presents a workflow for conducting finite element analysis of real clinical cases in acetabular fracture surgery. This concept of personalized biomechanical fracture and implant assessment can eventually be applied in clinical settings to guide implant selection, compare conventional implants with innovative patient-specific ones, optimizing implant designs (including shape, size, materials, screw positions), and determine whether immediate full weight-bearing can be safely permitted. Background: Understanding complex neurosurgical procedures and diseases, such as skull-base meningiomas, is challenging for patients due to the intricate anatomy and the involvement of critical neurovascular structures. Enhanced patient comprehension is crucial for satisfaction and improved clinical outcomes. Patient-specific 3D models have demonstrated benefits in patient education, though they are costly and time-intensive to produce. This study investigates whether the use of 3D volumetric reconstructions with anatomical segmentation, widely available via neuronavigation software, can improve patients' understanding of skull-base meningiomas, surgical procedures, and potential complications. Materials and Methods: This study included twenty patients with skull-base meningiomas. Three-dimensional volume reconstructions and anatomical segmentations were created using preoperative MRI sequences with neuronavigation software. These reconstructions were used during patient consultations where a surgeon explained key aspects of the disease, the surgical intervention, and potential complications. A questionnaire assessed the patients' perceptions of the utility of these 3D reconstructions. Results: The majority of patients (75%) found the 3D volumetric reconstructions and anatomical segmentations to be more beneficial than MRI images for understanding their disease. Similarly, 75% reported improved comprehension of the surgical approach, and 85% felt that the reconstructions enhanced their understanding of potential surgical complications. Overall, 65% of patients considered the 3D reconstructions valuable in medical consultations. Conclusions: Our study indicates that using accessible, cost-effective, and non-time-consuming 3D volumetric reconstructions with anatomical segmentation enhances patient understanding of skull-base meningiomas. Further research is necessary to confirm these findings, compare these reconstructions with physical 3D models and virtual reality models, and evaluate their impact on patient anxiety regarding the surgical procedure. Roof stability is a main concern in tunneling engineering. A modified Mohr–Coulomb (MC) strength criterion to reduce the overestimation of the tensile strength described from the MC strength criterion is employed in this work. An analytical stability analysis of three-dimensional (3D) tunnel roofs for both circular and rectangular tunnels in soil is performed based on collapse mechanisms composed of a series of right elliptical cones by limit analysis. Two kinds of tunnel roof stability measures, that is the stability number, and the minimum supporting pressure required to ensure the tunnel roof stability are derived. Optimization codes are programmed to search for the most critical stability measure solutions. Comparative analyses are conducted to verify this work, and the influences of the soil strength characteristics, tensile strength cutoff, and the 3D characteristics on both the stability and the failure pattern of tunnel roof are revealed. It is shown that a stability analysis of tunnel roof considering tensile strength cutoff derives more critical stability estimations, especially for a tunnel roof under a lower internal friction angle but a greater cohesion. The 3D geometrical characteristics of tunnel roof has significant influences on both the stability measures and the function of soil strength cutoff on the stability measures. Compared with circular tunnels, supporting pressures will always being needed for rectangular tunnels to maintain the stability of tunnel roof, especially under a full tensile strength cutoff condition. FACT is a developed technique for clearing tissues that does not use acrylamide. Since the removal of lipids is crucial for transparency and efficient antibody staining throughout the tissue, especially for microscopy and imaging, it is a harmful process that can cause the loss of important biological molecules such as proteins. The FACT technique overcomes this by chemically bonding the membrane and intracellular proteins with the extracellular matrix, creating a massive 3D hydrogel matrix and providing structural support to fortify the tissue during processing. Compared to other acrylamide-based techniques, the FACT technique requires less labor and harmful chemicals and is therefore considered a more suitable option. In this study, we describe the complete FACT protocol for antibody staining and imaging of whole-cleared tissues while preserving structure and improving image quality. The protocol includes tissue perfusion, fixation, clearing, antibody staining, refractive index matching (RIM) (), microscopy, and imaging. The timing for each step varies depending on the size, weight, and type of tissue, as well as the type of immunostaining. We provide an example of the FACT protocol using mouse brain tissue, which demonstrates its suitability for molecular interrogation analysis of large tissues. Background: The management of failed total ankle replacements, with significant loss of bone stock, is challenging with high rates of complications and associated morbidity. Recent technological advances have enabled the development of patient-customized 3D-printed titanium truss arthrodesis implants, which offer an alternative salvage option for failed total ankle replacements. Methods: A prospective observational study was performed of 6 cases of failed total ankle replacements that were managed using custom patient-specific 3D-printed titanium truss arthrodesis implants. Technical tips, classification, and a treatment algorithm were developed based on our initial experience. Results: Between November 2018 and March 2022, 6 patients underwent arthrodesis for failed total ankle replacements. Follow-up was available for all cases. The mean follow-up was 3.0 years (range 1-4.5). The mean MOXFQ Index improved from 73.1 to 32.3 (P <.05). The mean EQ-5D-5L Index improved from 0.366 to 0.743 (P <.05) and the EQ-VAS also improved from 53.0 to 63.3 (P =.36). The mean VAS-Pain score at final follow-up was 27.5. There were no cases of nonunion. None of the patients were smokers. The overall complication rate was 50%. Two patients returned to surgery: one for wound washout following TAR explantation and a second for removal of metalwork 2 years following surgery for a prosthetic joint infection secondary to hematogenous spread. No patients underwent revision fixation or amputation. Conclusion: Custom patient-specific 3D-printed titanium truss arthrodesis implants are a viable treatment option for failed total ankle replacements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Parastomal hernias (PSH) are difficult to manage and associated with high rates of postoperative recurrence and complications. Sugarbaker and three-dimensional (3-D) mesh repair are commonly used methods for the surgical treatment of PSH. However, the efficacy and safety of these surgical techniques have not been adequately compared. Patients with PSH who received 3-D mesh or Sugarbaker repair at our center from August 2012 to May 2023 were included. We retrospectively analyzed their demographic data and postoperative outcomes. The primary outcome measure was the recurrence rate at 1-year follow-up. A total of 86 patients were enrolled, involving 53 in the 3-D mesh (62%) group and 33 in the Sugarbaker (38%) group. Most cases (73%) involved were the laparoscopic approach. The recurrence rate at 1-year follow-up was 15% (eight cases) in the 3-D mesh group and 24% (eight cases) in the Sugarbaker group, with no statistical significance (P = 0.29). Additionally, no differences were observed between the 3-D mesh and Sugarbaker groups in the length of hospitalization or in short- and long-term complications. Sugarbaker and 3-D mesh repair have similar clinical efficacy in the surgical treatment of PSH. Further randomized controlled trials are required to confirm these results. Trial registration number. Background: The left ventricular (LV) rotational mechanics are of particular importance in the function of the LV. The rotational movement is the consequence of the arrangement of the subepicardial and subendocardial muscle fibers. These muscle fibers are perpendicular to each other, their contraction creates a characteristic motion. The aim of the present study was to examine the prognostic impact of LV twist assessed by three-dimensional speckle-tracking echocardiography (3D-STE) in healthy circumstances. Methods: 302 healthy adults participated in the study, 181 subjects were excluded due to certain reasons (LV could not be analysed during 3D-STE, subjects were unidentifiable, or lost to follow-up). 121 subjects were involved in the final analysis (mean age of 33.1 ± 12.3 years, 75 males), who were willing to be examined on a voluntary basis. Results: During a mean follow-up of 7.93 ± 4.21 years, 11 healthy adults suffered a cardiovascular event including 2 cardiac deaths. Using receiver operating characteristic analysis, LV twist ≥14.65 degrees as assessed by 3D-STE proved to be significantly predictive regarding the cardiovascular event-free survival (area under the curve 0.70, specificity 70%, sensitivity 65%, p = 0.028). Subjects with LV twist ≥14.65 degrees had higher basal and apical rotations and a significantly higher ratio of these individuals developed cardiovascular events compared to cases with LV twist <14.65 degrees. Subjects with cardiovascular events had lower LV global longitudinal strain, higher basal LV rotation and twist and the ratio of subjects with LV twist ≥14.65 degrees was elevated as compared to cases without events. This article explores the memory effects of a three-dimensional cylindrical panel with a void using the Three-Phase-Lag (3PL) theory. The study derives the governing equations for displacement, temperature, void volume fraction, and stress. These equations are solved using Fourier–Laplace transforms and eigenvalue methods. To obtain numerical solutions and generate graphical representations, the transformed equations were inverted. Material properties from Gauthier's work were used, and graphical results were produced using Mathematica software. The influence of memory response is then demonstrated by comparing kernel functions and time delay parameters within the 3PL porous cylindrical panel. The results show significant changes in the behavior of the panel. The validity of the proposed model is confirmed by comparing its predictions with previously published findings. The authors believe these results can provide valuable insights for various engineering applications involving porous materials. Study Design: Retrospective Cohort Study. Objective: To determine whether 3D-printed porous titanium (3DPT) interbody cages offer any clinical or radiographic advantage over standard solid titanium (ST) interbody cages in transforaminal lumbar interbody fusions (TLIF). Methods: A consecutive series of adult patients undergoing one- or two-level TLIF with either 3DPT or ST "banana" cages were analyzed for patient reported outcome measures (PROMs), radiographic complications, and clinical complications. Exclusion criteria included clinical or radiographic follow-up less than 1 year. Results: The final cohort included 90 ST interbody levels from 74 patients, and 73 3DPT interbody levels from 50 patients for a total of 124 patients. Baseline demographic variables and comorbidity rates were similar between groups (P >.05). Subsidence of any grade occurred more frequently in the ST group compared with the 3DPT group (24.4% vs 5.5%, respectively, P =.001). Further, the ST group was more likely to have higher grades of subsidence than the 3DPT group (P =.009). All PROMs improved similarly after surgery and revision rates did not differ between groups (both P >.05). On multivariate analysis, significant positive correlators with increasing subsidence grade included greater age (P =.015), greater body mass index (P =.043), osteoporosis/osteopenia (P <.027), and ST cage type (P =.019). Conclusions: When considering interbody material for TLIF, both ST and 3DPT cages performed well; however, 3DPT cages were associated with lower rates of subsidence. In invisible orthodontics, the role of composite attachments in facilitating complex tooth movements is crucial. This study, which evaluates the efficacy of a novel clinical attachment procedure, holds significant implications for the field. The technique used two templates (one pre-drilled and the other pre-loaded with high-viscosity composites) and was compared with the standard procedure. Fifty attachments were planned for four dental arch prototypes. Dental impressions were taken using digital scans for virtual planning and after tested techniques. The stereolithographic files (STL) obtained were aligned with those of the virtual planning, and a colorimetric map was used to evaluate the composite resin's maximum excess and defect deviation. The enamel–resin interfaces were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The Fisher test for the distribution of detachments and morphological defects and the Mann–Whitney test for the maximum values of excess and defect were used. No significant results were found between groups for morphological defects and detachments, and the maximum values of defect and excess were reported. SEM images for the experimental technique showed integrated adhesion. This innovative procedure, which has proven reliable and operationally straightforward, holds promise, instilling confidence in its practicality and potential to advance the field of orthodontics. Background and Aim: Full‐thickness biopsies of the intestinal wall may be used to study and assess damage to the neurons of the enteric nervous system (ENS), that is, enteric neuropathy. The ENS is difficult to examine due to its localization deep in the intestinal wall and its organization with several connections in diverging directions. Histological sections used in clinical practice only visualize the sample in a two‐dimensional way. X‐ray phase‐contrast micro‐computed tomography (PC‐μCT) has shown potential to assess the cross‐sectional thickness and volume of the ENS in three dimensions (3D). The aim of this study was to explore the potential of PC‐μCT to evaluate its use to determine the size of the ENS. Methods: Full‐thickness biopsies of ileum obtained during surgery from five controls and six patients clinically diagnosed with enteric neuropathy and dysmotility were included. Punch biopsies of 1 mm in diameter and 1 cm in length, from an area containing myenteric plexus, were extracted from paraffin blocks, and scanned with synchrotron‐based PC‐μCT without any staining. Results: The microscopic volumetric structure of the neural tissue (consisting of both ganglia and fascicles) could be determined in all samples. The ratio of neural tissue volume/total tissue volume was higher in controls than in patients with enteric neuropathy (P = 0.013). The patient with the longest disease duration had the lowest ratio. Conclusion: The assessment of neural tissue can be performed in an objective, standardized way, to ensure reproducibility and comparison under physiological and pathological conditions. We present a new indication of a three-dimensional statistical shape model (SSM): a patient with bilateral impaired forearm rotation due to a congenital variance in bone shape. A corrective osteotomy was planned and performed to best match the SSM created by computed tomography (CT) scans of 18 peers. Postoperatively, pronation increased by 70°, and the patient was pain-free. A CT scan showed accurate correction of the deformity and union of all osteotomies. In this work, we introduce a unique approach for fabricating a three-dimensional (3D) Cu-ZIF-8/MXene, combing the merits of MOFs and MXene to enhance their overall performance. Subsequently, the synthesis of 3D MXene-based Cu and N-doped porous carbon (Cu-NPCM) composites, characterized by high specific surface area, superior conductivity, and abundant active sites, was achieved through the carbonization and acid etching of Cu-ZIF-8/MXene. Utilizing the resulting 3D Cu-NPCM composites as effective electrocatalyst supports, Ni and Pd NPs were uniformly dispersed, preventing the aggregation of metal NPs. The unique structure of Cu-NPCM, coupled with the synergy of Ni and Pd, facilitates the creation of interconnected channels for rapid reactant and product diffusion, along with a substantial amount of OHad, thereby enhancing the electrocatalytic efficiency. Remarkably, the designed trimetallic Pd/Ni/Cu-NPCM catalyst demonstrates an advanced mass activity of 3641.2 mA mgPd–1 in the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR), surpassing Pd/Cu-NPCM (2200.5 mA mgPd–1), Pd/Cu-NPC (1447.1 mA mgPd–1), and Pd/C (209.3 mA mgPd–1) electrocatalysts by 1.66, 2.51, and 17.4 times, respectively. Background/Objectives: Three-dimensional (3D) analysis of maxillofacial structures in dysmorphic patients offers clinical advantages over 2D analysis due to its high accuracy and precision in measuring many morphological parameters. Currently, no reliable gold standard exists for calculating 3D volumetric measurements of maxillofacial structures when captured by 3D surface imaging techniques. The aim of this scoping review is to provide an overview of the scientific literature related to 3D surface imaging methods used for volumetric analysis of the dysmorphic maxillofacial structures of patients affected by CL/P or other syndromes and to provide an update on the existing protocols, methods, and, when available, reference data. Methods: A total of 17 papers selected according to strict inclusion and exclusion criteria were reviewed for the qualitative analysis out of more than 4500 articles published between 2002 and 2024 that were retrieved from the main electronic scientific databases according to the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. A qualitative synthesis of the protocols used for the selection of the anatomical areas of interest and details on the methods used for the calculation of their volume was completed. Results: The results suggest a great degree of heterogeneity between the reviewed studies in all the aspects analysed (patient population, anatomical structure, area selection, and volume calculation), which prevents any chance of direct comparison between the reported volumetric data. Conclusions: Our qualitative analysis revealed dissimilarities in the procedures specified in the studies, highlighting the need to develop uniform methods and protocols and the need for comparative studies to verify the validity of methods in order to achieve high levels of scientific evidence, homogeneity of volumetric data, and clinical consensus on the methods to use for 3D volumetric surface-based analysis. Background: Orofacial clefts are one of the most common congenital malformations of the fetal face and ultrasound is mainly responsible for its diagnosis. It is difficult to view the fetal palate, so there is currently no unified standard for fetal palate screening, and the diagnosis of cleft palate is not included in the relevant prenatal ultrasound screening guidelines. Many prenatal diagnoses for cleft palate are missed due to the lack of effective screening methods. Therefore, it is imperative to increase the display rate of the fetal palate, which would improve the detection rate and diagnostic accuracy for cleft palate. We aim to introduce a fetal palate screening software based on the "sequential sector scan though the oral fissure", an effective method for fetal palate screening which was verified by our follow up results and three-dimensional ultrasound and to evaluate its feasibility and clinical practicability. Methods: A software was designed and programmed based on "sequential sector scan through the oral fissure" and three-dimensional ultrasound. The three-dimensional ultrasound volume data of the fetal face were imported into the software. Then, the median sagittal plane was taken as the reference interface, the anterior upper margin of the mandibular alveolar bone was selected as the fulcrum, the interval angles, and the number of layers of the sector scan were set, after which the automatic scan was performed. Thus, the sector scan sequential planes of the mandibular alveolar bone, pharynx, soft palate, hard palate, and maxillary alveolar bone were obtained in sequence to display and evaluate the palate. In addition, the feasibility and accuracy of the software in fetal palate displaying and screening was evaluated by actual clinical cases. Results: Full views of the normal fetal palates and the defective parts of the cleft palates were displayed, and relatively clear sequential tomographic images and continuous dynamic videos were formed after the three-dimensional volume data of 10 normal fetal palates and 10 cleft palates were imported into the software. A smile that reveals >4 mm of gum tissue is called a gummy smile (GS), offering negative impacts on people's self-confidence and aesthetic appearance. The treatment for GS should be planned according to underlying causes such as altered passive eruption of teeth, dentoalveolar extrusion, vertical maxillary excess, and short or hyperactive lip muscles. In this case report, a patient with severe GS received orthodontic and gingivoplasty treatment, aided by digital tools such as 3D simulation, smile design, and 3D printed guides. The treatment yielded remarkable and satisfactory results, without the need for extensive surgery. Our findings suggest that gingivoplasty is a minimally invasive, time- and cost-effective alternative to more extensive procedures for correcting severe gum recession. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In unstable shoulders, excessive anteroinferior position of the humeral head relative to the glenoid can lead to a dislocation. Measuring humeral head position could therefore be valuable in quantifying shoulder laxity. The aim of this study was to measure (1) position of the humeral head relative to the glenoid and (2) joint space thickness during passive motion in unstable shoulders caused by traumatic anterior dislocations and in contralateral uninjured shoulders. A prospective cross‐sectional CT‐study was performed in patients with unilateral anterior shoulder instability. Patients underwent CT scanning of both injured and uninjured side in supine position (0° abduction and 0° external rotation) and in 60°, 90°, and 120° of abduction with 90° of external rotation without an external load. Subsequently, 3D virtual models were created of the humerus and the scapula to create a glenoid coordinate system to identify poster‐anterior, inferior‐superior, and lateral‐medial position of the humeral head relative to the glenoid. Joint space thickness was defined as the average distance between the subchondral bone surfaces of the humeral head and glenoid. Fifteen consecutive patients were included. In supine position, the humeral head was positioned more anteriorly (p = 0.004), inferiorly (p = 0.019), and laterally (p = 0.021) in the injured compared to the uninjured shoulder. No differences were observed in any of the other positions. A joint‐space thickness map, showing the bone‐to‐bone distances, identified the Hill−Sachs lesion footprint on the glenoid surface in external rotation and abduction, but no differences on average joint space thickness were observed in any position. Purpose: External ear reconstruction has been a challenging subject for plastic surgeons for decades. Popular methods using autologous costal cartilage or polyethylene still have their drawbacks. With the advance of three-dimensional (3D) printing technique, bioscaffold engineering using synthetic polymer draws attention as an alternative. This is a clinical trial of ear reconstruction using 3D printed scaffold, presented with clinical results after 1 year. Materials and Methods: From 2021 to 2022, five adult patients with unilateral microtia underwent two-staged total ear reconstruction using 3D printed implants. For each patient, a patient-specific 3D printed scaffold was designed and produced with polycaprolactone (PCL) based on computed tomography images, using fused deposition modeling. Computed tomography scan was obtained preoperatively, within 2 weeks following the surgery and after 1 year, to compare the volume of the normal side and the reconstructed ear. At 1-year visit, clinical photo was taken for scoring by two surgeons and patients themselves. Results: All five patients had completely healed reconstructed ear at 1-year follow-up. On average, the volume of reconstructed ear was 161.54% of that of the normal side ear. In a range of 0 to 10, objective assessors gave scores 3 to 6, whereas patients gave scores 8 to 10. Conclusion: External ear reconstruction using 3D printed PCL implant showed durable, safe results reflected by excellent volume restoration and patient satisfaction at 1 year postoperatively. Further clinical follow-up with more cases and refinement of scaffold with advancing bioprinting technique is anticipated. The use of decellularized extracellular matrix products in tissue regeneration is quite alluring yet practically challenging due to the limitations of its availability, harsh processing techniques, and host rejection. Scaffolds obtained by either incorporating extracellular matrix (ECM) material or coating the surface can resolve these challenges to some extent. However, these scaffolds lack the complex 3D network formed by proteins and growth factors observed in natural ECM. This study introduces an approach utilizing 3D nanofiber scaffolds decorated with dECM to enhance cellular responses and promote tissue regeneration. Notably, the dECM can be customized according to specific cellular requirements, offering a tailored environment for enhanced therapeutic outcomes. Two types of 3D expanded scaffolds, namely radially aligned scaffolds (RAS) and laterally expanded scaffolds (LES) fabricated by the gas-foaming expansion were utilized. To demonstrate the proof-of-concept, human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs) seeded on these scaffolds for up to 8 weeks, resulted in uniform and highly aligned cells which deposited ECM on the scaffolds. These cellular components were then removed from the scaffolds through decellularization (e.g., SDS treatment and freeze-thaw cycles). The dECM-decorated 3D expanded nanofiber scaffolds can direct and support cell alignment and proliferation along the underlying fibers upon recellularization. An in vitro inflammation assay indicates that dECM-decorated LES induces a lower immune response than dECM-decorated RAS. Further, subcutaneous implantation of dECM-decorated RAS and LES shows higher cell infiltration and angiogenesis within 7 and 14 days than RAS and LES without dECM decoration. Taken together, dECM-decorated 3D expanded nanofiber scaffolds hold great potential in tissue regeneration and tissue modeling. Decellularized ECM scaffolds have attained widespread attention in biomedical applications due to their intricate 3D framework of proteins and growth factors. Mimicking such a complicated architecture is a clinical challenge. In this study, we developed natural ECM-decorated 3D electrospun nanofiber scaffolds with controlled alignments to mimic human tissue. Fibroblasts were cultured on these scaffolds for 8 weeks to deposit natural ECM and decellularized by either freeze-thawing or detergent to obtain decellularized ECM scaffolds. We herein report two- (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) culture methods of cholangiocytes originating from extrahepatic bile ducts of biliary atresia (BA) patients. Cells were stabilized for in vitro analyses, and 3D culture by two different methods showed the structural and functional features of cholangiocytes in the gel scaffold. First, cells were obtained from gallbladder contents or resected tissues of patients at surgery and then cultured in our original conditioned medium with a cocktail of signaling inhibitors that maintains the immaturity and amplification of cells. Cells were immortalized by inducing SV40T and hTERT genes using lentivirus systems. Immunostaining with CK19 and Sox9 antibodies confirmed the cells as cholangiocytes. 3D organoids were formed in Matrigel in two different ways: by forming spheroids or via vertical growth from 2D cell sheets (2 + 1D culture). Organoids generated with both methods showed the uptake and excretion of rhodamine-123, and duct-like structures were also found. Our culture methods are simpler than previously reported methods and still show the structural and functional characteristics of cholangiocytes. This work employs the phase field method combined with a realistic microscopic heterogeneous pore structure model to conduct numerical simulations of CO2–oil two-phase flow. This study investigates the diffusion behavior of CO2 during the displacement process and analyzes the impact of various parameters such as the flow rate, the contact angle, and interfacial tension on the displacement effect. The results indicate that, over time, saturated oil is gradually replaced by CO2, which primarily flows along channels with larger throat widths and lower resistance. The preferential flow paths of CO2 correspond to high flow rates and high pore pressures occupied by CO2. As the injection rate increases, the CO2 filtration rate increases, CO2 movement becomes more pronounced, and CO2 saturation rises. Beyond the optimal flow rate, however, the displacement effect worsens. The wettability of the porous medium predominantly determines the CO2 migration path during the displacement process. As the contact angle increases, CO2 wettability towards the rock improves, significantly enhancing the displacement effect. Under different interfacial tension conditions, the recovery rate increases with the amount of CO2 entering the porous medium, but no clear correlation is observed between interfacial tension and the recovery rate. Therefore, it is challenging to further improve the recovery rate by altering interfacial tension. The viscosity ratio affects wettability and thereby influences the displacement effect. Lower viscosity ratios result in reduced wettability effects, making CO2 diffusion more difficult. PurposeFor biochemical evaluation of soft tissues of the knee, T1rho magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been proposed. Purpose of this study was to compare three T1rho sequences based on fast advanced spin echo (FASE), ultrashort echo time (UTE), and magnetization-prepared angle-modulated partitioned k-space spoiled gradient echo snapshots (MAPSS) acquisitions for the knee evaluation.Materials and methodsWe developed two T1rho sequences using 3D FASE or 3D radial UTE acquisitions. 3D MAPSS T1rho was provided by the manufacturer. Agarose phantoms with varying concentrations were imaged. Additionally, bilateral knees of asymptomatic subjects were imaged sagittally. T1rho values of the phantoms and 4 regions of interest (ROI) of the knees (i.e., anterior and posterior meniscus, femoral and tibial cartilage) were determined.ResultsIn phantoms, all T1rho values monotonically decreased with increasing agarose concentration. 3D MAPSS T1rho values of 51, 34, and 38 ms were found for 2, 3, and 4% agarose, respectively, similar to published values on another platform. In the knee, the raw images were detailed with good contrast. Cartilage and meniscus T1rho values varied with the pulse sequence, being the lowest in the 3D UTE T1rho sequence. Comparing different ROIs, menisci generally had lower T1rho values compared to cartilage, as expected in healthy knees.ConclusionWe have successfully developed and implemented the new T1rho sequences and validated them using agarose phantoms and volunteer knees. All sequences were optimized to be clinically feasible (~ 5 min or less) and yielded satisfactory image quality and T1rho values consistent with the literature.

Abstract Background In acetabular fracture surgery, understanding the biomechanical behaviour of fractures and implants is beneficial for clinical decision-making about implant selection and postoperative (early) weightbearing protocols. This study outlines a novel approach for creating finite element models (FEA) from actual clinical cases. Our objectives were to (1) create a detailed semi-automatic three-dimensional FEA of a patient with a transverse posterior wall acetabular fracture and (2) biomechanically compare patient-specific implants with manually bent off-the-shelf implants. Methods A computational study was performed in which we developed three finite element models. The models were derived from clinical imaging data of a 20-year-old male with a transverse posterior wall acetabular fracture treated with a patient-specific implant. This implant was designed to fit the patient's anatomy and fracture configuration, allowing for optimal placement and predetermined screw trajectories. The three FEA models included an intact hemipelvis for baseline comparison, one with a fracture fixated with a patient-specific implant, and another with a conventional implant. Two loading conditions were investigated: standing up and peak walking forces. Von Mises stress and displacement patterns in bone, implants and screws were analysed to assess the biomechanical behaviour of fracture fixation with either a patient-specific versus a conventional implant. Results The finite element models demonstrated that for a transverse posterior wall type fracture, a patient-specific implant resulted in lower peak stresses in the bone (30 MPa and 56 MPa) in standing-up and peak walking scenario, respectively, compared to the conventional implant model (46 MPa and 90 MPa). The results suggested that patient-specific implant could safely withstand standing-up and walking after surgery, with maximum von Mises stresses in the implant of 156 MPa and 371 MPa, respectively. The results from the conventional implant indicate a likelihood of implant failure, with von Mises stresses in the implant (499 MPa and 1000 MPa) exceeding the yield stress of stainless steel. Conclusion This study presents a workflow for conducting finite element analysis of real clinical cases in acetabular fracture surgery. This concept of personalized biomechanical fracture and implant assessment can eventually be applied in clinical settings to guide implant selection, compare conventional implants with innovative patient-specific ones, optimizing implant designs (including shape, size, materials, screw positions), and determine whether immediate full weight-bearing can be safely permitted.

Abstract Background Orofacial clefts are one of the most common congenital malformations of the fetal face and ultrasound is mainly responsible for its diagnosis. It is difficult to view the fetal palate, so there is currently no unified standard for fetal palate screening, and the diagnosis of cleft palate is not included in the relevant prenatal ultrasound screening guidelines. Many prenatal diagnoses for cleft palate are missed due to the lack of effective screening methods. Therefore, it is imperative to increase the display rate of the fetal palate, which would improve the detection rate and diagnostic accuracy for cleft palate. We aim to introduce a fetal palate screening software based on the “sequential sector scan though the oral fissure”, an effective method for fetal palate screening which was verified by our follow up results and three-dimensional ultrasound and to evaluate its feasibility and clinical practicability. Methods A software was designed and programmed based on “sequential sector scan through the oral fissure” and three-dimensional ultrasound. The three-dimensional ultrasound volume data of the fetal face were imported into the software. Then, the median sagittal plane was taken as the reference interface, the anterior upper margin of the mandibular alveolar bone was selected as the fulcrum, the interval angles, and the number of layers of the sector scan were set, after which the automatic scan was performed. Thus, the sector scan sequential planes of the mandibular alveolar bone, pharynx, soft palate, hard palate, and maxillary alveolar bone were obtained in sequence to display and evaluate the palate. In addition, the feasibility and accuracy of the software in fetal palate displaying and screening was evaluated by actual clinical cases. Results Full views of the normal fetal palates and the defective parts of the cleft palates were displayed, and relatively clear sequential tomographic images and continuous dynamic videos were formed after the three-dimensional volume data of 10 normal fetal palates and 10 cleft palates were imported into the software. Conclusions The software can display fetal palates more directly which might allow for a new method of fetal palate screening and cleft palate diagnosis.

Bionic multifunctional structural materials that are lightweight, strong, and perceptible have shown great promise in sports, medicine, and aerospace applications. However, smart monitoring devices with integrated mechanical protection and piezoelectric induction are limited. Herein, we report a strategy to grow the recyclable and healable piezoelectric Rochelle salt crystals in 3D-printed cuttlebone-inspired structures to form a new composite for reinforcement smart monitoring devices. In addition to its remarkable mechanical and piezoelectric performance, the growth mechanisms, the recyclability, the sensitivity, and repairability of the 3D-printed Rochelle salt cuttlebone composite were studied. Furthermore, the versatility of composite has been explored and applied as smart sensor armor for football players and fall alarm knee pads, focusing on incorporated mechanical reinforcement and electrical self-sensing capabilities with data collection of the magnitude and distribution of impact forces, which offers new ideas for the design of next-generation smart monitoring electronics in sports, military, aerospace, and biomedical engineering.

Many insects feed on xylem or phloem sap of vascular plants. Although physical damage to the plant is minimal, the process of insect feeding can transmit lethal viruses and bacterial pathogens. Disparities between insect-mediated pathogen transmission efficiency have been identified among xylem sap-feeding insects; however, the mechanistic drivers of these trends are unclear. Identifying and understanding the structural factors and associated integrated functional components that may ultimately determine these disparities are critical for managing plant diseases. Here, we applied synchrotron-based X-ray microcomputed tomography to digitally reconstruct the morphology of three xylem sap-feeding insect vectors of plant pathogens: Graphocephala atropunctata (blue-green sharpshooter; Hemiptera, Cicadellidae) and Homalodisca vitripennis (glassy-winged sharpshooter; Hemiptera, Cicadellidae), and the spittlebug Philaenus spumarius (meadow spittlebug; Hemiptera, Aphrophoridae). The application of this technique revealed previously undescribed anatomical features of these organisms, such as key components of the salivary complex. The visualization of the 3D structure of the precibarial valve led to new insights into the mechanism of how this structure functions. Morphological disparities with functional implications between taxa were highlighted as well, including the morphology and volume of the cibarial dilator musculature responsible for extracting xylem sap, which has implications for force application capabilities. These morphological insights will be used to target analyses illuminating functional differences in feeding behavior.

Human genetic syndromes are often challenging to diagnose clinically. Facial phenotype is a key diagnostic indicator for hundreds of genetic syndromes and computer-assisted facial phenotyping is a promising approach to assist diagnosis. Most previous approaches to automated face-based syndrome diagnosis have analyzed different datasets of either 2D images or surface mesh-based 3D facial representations, making direct comparisons of performance challenging. In this work, we developed a set of subject-matched 2D and 3D facial representations, which we then analyzed with the aim of comparing the performance of 2D and 3D image-based approaches to computer-assisted syndrome diagnosis. This work represents the most comprehensive subject-matched analyses to date on this topic. In our analyses of 1907 subject faces representing 43 different genetic syndromes, 3D surface-based syndrome classification models significantly outperformed 2D image-based models trained and evaluated on the same subject faces. These results suggest that the clinical adoption of 3D facial scanning technology and continued collection of syndromic 3D facial scan data may substantially improve face-based syndrome diagnosis.

The goal of this study was to test if CFD-based virtual angiograms could be used to automatically discriminate between intracranial aneurysms (IAs) with and without flow stagnation. Time density curves (TDC) were extracted from patient digital subtraction angiography (DSA) image sequences by computing the average gray level intensity inside the aneurysm region and used to define injection profiles for each subject. Subject-specific 3D models were reconstructed from 3D rotational angiography (3DRA) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were performed to simulate the blood flow inside IAs. Transport equations were solved numerically to simulate the dynamics of contrast injection into the parent arteries and IAs and then the contrast retention time (RET) was calculated. The importance of gravitational pooling of contrast agent within the aneurysm was evaluated by modeling contrast agent and blood as a mixture of two fluids with different densities and viscosities. Virtual angiograms can reproduce DSA sequences if the correct injection profile is used. RET can identify aneurysms with significant flow stagnation even when the injection profile is not known. Using a small sample of 14 IAs of which seven were previously classified as having flow stagnation, it was found that a threshold RET value of 0.46 s can successfully identify flow stagnation. CFD-based prediction of stagnation was in more than 90% agreement with independent visual DSA assessment of stagnation in a second sample of 34 IAs. While gravitational pooling prolonged contrast retention time it did not affect the predictive capabilities of RET. CFD-based virtual angiograms can detect flow stagnation in IAs and can be used to automatically identify aneurysms with flow stagnation even without including gravitational effects on contrast agents.

Hydrogels are attractive materials for tissue engineering, but efforts to date have shown limited ability to produce the microstructural features necessary to promote cellular self-organization into hierarchical three-dimensional (3D) organ models. Here we develop a hydrogel ink containing prefabricated gelatin fibres to print 3D organ-level scaffolds that recapitulate the intra- and intercellular organization of the heart. The addition of prefabricated gelatin fibres to hydrogels enables the tailoring of the ink rheology, allowing for a controlled sol-gel transition to achieve precise printing of free-standing 3D structures without additional supporting materials. Shear-induced alignment of fibres during ink extrusion provides microscale geometric cues that promote the self-organization of cultured human cardiomyocytes into anisotropic muscular tissues in vitro. The resulting 3D-printed ventricle in vitro model exhibited biomimetic anisotropic electrophysiological and contractile properties.

Theoretical research has been done on the hydromagnetic three-dimensional nanofluid flow across an inclined stretching sheet in the presence of Brownian motion and thermophoresis. It is taken into account that there are two different kinds of water-based nanofluids that contain copper and alumina. Three-dimensional nonlinear-type similarity transformations are used to convert the governing boundary-layer equations into a collection of similarity equations, which are then numerically solved by MATLAB. Further, results obtained in some limiting cases are compared to some results that have already been published, and it is found that there is good agreement. The problem is controlled by a number of physical factors, and the impact of these factors on different flow distributions is thoroughly examined with the help of graphs and tables. ObjectiveThe objective of this study was to develop a sonographic technique using two-dimensional (2D) markers for detecting isolated fetal cleft palate (no cleft lip) and to evaluate the ability of 2D and three-dimensional (3D) sonography to image the normal and abnormal palate. Methods Seventy-three fetuses with a high risk of cleft palate at 12-39 weeks of gestation were referred for specialist ultrasound. A detailed evaluation of the palate was performed through 2D ultrasound, which revealed the appearance of the palatine line in the sagittal plane; the palate and alveolar ridge in the coronal plane of the fetal face; the horizontal plate of the palatine bone in the axial maxillary plane; and the soft palate in the transverse plane of the cavum pharyngis. Subsequently, 3D ultrasound imaging of the palate was performed in all fetuses. Antenatal diagnoses were compared with postnatal findings or autopsy findings. Results Visualization of 2D markers was accomplished in all fetuses, and 3D assessment was achieved in 97% of fetuses. Cleft palate was suspected in 16 cases (21.9%), among which 14 were suspected on the basis of both 2D and 3D evaluation, and two were suspected only on the basis of 3D evaluation. A normal palate was observed in 57 fetuses (78.1%). The mean gestational age was 27 weeks (range of 12 weeks to 39 weeks). All 16 fetuses with suspected cleft palate were confirmed by postnatal or autopsy findings, no false-positives were observed, and one case with a bifid uvula was missed among 57 fetuses with a presumed normal palate. Conclusions The fetal palate can be evaluated with 2D markers and 3D sonography. The detection of isolated cleft palate is more sensitive when 2D markers are present in all four planes.

Digital models and three-dimensional technology in orthodontics have become an integral part of everyday clinical practice. Nevertheless, there is currently no consensus regarding in which cases a digital model is really necessary. Therefore, this scoping review aims to identify and assess which orthodontic procedures require a digital model. This review’s reporting was based on PRISMA guidelines. A literature search was undertaken using five electronic databases on 17 February 2024. A total of 87 studies met the inclusion criteria and were qualitatively analyzed by three reviewers. The following aspects of orthodontic treatment were identified and discussed with regard to digital model application: diagnosis, treatment procedures, retention, and outcome evaluation in orthodontics. Based on the studies assessed, despite some limitations regarding radiation exposure justification and the accuracy of the integration methods of 3D data, there is evidence that digital models lead to more accurate orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning. In cases of impacted canines, aligner treatment, mini-implants insertion (when angle definition and orientation are essential), and primary care for cleft lip and palate, a partial digital model produced by an integration of some of the 3D data (face scan, intraoral scan, CBCT) that we can acquire is beneficial. A full digital model that combines all the 3D information should be used in orthognathic surgery cases, in which prediction and accurate performance are highly advocated.

Background and aim: To compare the marginal and internal adaptation of full veneer crowns cast from wax patterns fabricated by three-dimensional printing and conventional wax-up technique employing two different convergence angles.Material and methods: Two metal master dies, each with a convergence angle of 6 and 12-degrees, were duplicated 24 times to obtain 48 stone dies. Twelve dies from each group were randomly chosen for conventional wax-up (Group A) and the other twelve for the three-dimensional printed wax pattern (Group B) fabrication. Cobalt-chromium full veneer crowns were cemented onto the dies using glass ionomer cement. The cemented crowns and dies were sectioned in the midline buccolingually to measure the marginal and internal gaps using a stereomicroscope and digital image analysis software (Image J). Data obtained were recorded in microns, and an independent 't' test was used to compare quantitative parameters between categories.Results: Group B showed a statistically significant reduction in marginal discrepancy in crowns with a 6-degree taper (114.4 ± 37.5) compared to Group A (160.4 ±58.1). Group B did not demonstrate any significant difference when the 6-degree and 12-degree tapers were compared, but Group A showed a significant improvement in marginal and internal adaptation with the 12-degree taper.Conclusions: For the 6-degree taper, three-dimensional printing resulted in better marginal and internal fit than conventional wax patterns. Conventional and three-dimensional Printing offered similar accuracy within the acceptable range for a 12-degree taper.

This paper proposes a dual‐frequency three‐dimensional wireless power transfer system, which can achieve dual channel independent maximum power transfer of two movable receivers. Based on the dual‐frequency compensation network, a dual‐frequency magnetic field orientation strategy and a current control strategy are developed. Accordingly, the mathematical model of the proposed system is established, providing the theoretical support for mutual non‐interference of the power transfer between the two power transfer channels with different frequencies. On this basis, an iterative optimization control system is designed for independent maximum power transfer for two power transfer channels without any interference. A 200‐W experimental prototype with an efficiency of around 80% is built to verify the correctness of the proposed system. In the case of load position change, the response time of the proposed system is around 200 ms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
