The economic boom following the War of 1812 facilitated rapid settlement westward but the Panic of 1819 exposed the fragility of expansion built upon government credit. American settlers forced by debt to relinquish hundreds of thousands of acres back to the federal government flooded Washington with petitions for relief. The rhetoric of those petitions and the speeches of politicians reveal a people developing a western sectional identity even as they forged ties of dependency on the federal government. Benton attributed their decline to the breakdown of the economic society in 1929 and the early 1930s due to the Depression.

Les images du métro new-yorkais et de ses précurseurs, le métro aérien et la voiture à chevaux occupent une place à part dans la culture américaine. Si la descente dans le métro et le déplacement sur des kilomètres de voies souterraines sont presque inévitablement envisagés comme un voyage aux Enfers, cet événement est aussi inéluctablement social. Les passagers s’adonnent à un jeu complexe de cache-cache les uns avec les autres, en essayant de scruter les gens autour d’eux sans toutefois se faire prendre. Dans cet article, j’explore la représentation visuelle et verbale du système de transports de New York dans ses dimensions les plus frappantes — la théâtralité et l’observation des spectateurs. J’emprunte des exemples à la poésie et à la prose, à la peinture et à la photographie, et plus particulièrement aux œuvres de Stephen Crane, Hart Crane, Charles Reznikoff, Allen Ginsberg, Elizabeth Bishop, Paul Blackburn, George Tooker, Edward Hopper, Everett Shinn, Thomas Hart Benton, John Sloan, Leroi Jones, et Ralph Ellison. Je me consacre en dernier lieu à une observation plus attentive des photographies de métro obsédantes que Walker Evans prit entre 1938 et 1941. Dans ces photographies d’Evans, le court-circuit visuel caractérisant le rôle des spectateurs dans le métro (voir sans être vu) trouve son expression la plus poignante.Images of the New York subway and its precursors, the Elevated train and the horse-car, hold a special place in American culture. While the descent into the subway station and the ride along endless miles of subterranean tracks are almost inevitably figured as a journey to the Underworld, the whole affair is an inescapably social event. Passengers play a complex game of visual hide-and-seek with each other as they try to scrutinize the people around them without being caught in the act. In this essay I explore the visual and verbal representation of New York’s otherworldly transit system in terms of what may be its most striking motifs—theatricality and spectatorship. My examples are taken from poetry and prose, painting and photography, including works by Stephen Crane, Hart Crane, Charles Reznikoff, Allen Ginsberg, Elizabeth Bishop, Paul Blackburn, George Tooker, Edward Hopper, Everett Shinn, Thomas Hart Benton, John Sloan, Leroi Jones, and Ralph Ellison. I conclude with a more sustained look at the haunting subway photographs taken secretly by Walker Evans from 1938-1941. In Evans’s photos, the visual short circuit that characterizes subway spectatorship (look but don’t get looked at) finds its most striking expression.

Abstract

This dissertation analyzes Associated American Artists, a business that sold American art at affordable prices through department stores, its own mail-order catalogues, and its own galleries. During the period of this study, 1934 to 1945, Associated American Artists’ founder, Reeves Lewenthal, capitalized on several conditions in order to effectively promote the sale of his art, several of which were directly in-line with his own personal beliefs and aspirations. These conditions included the growth of the consumer-driven retail economy evidenced by the popularity of department store shopping in large cities and the success of catalogue shopping across the nation; the need for an uplifting and positive art to calm the fears of those who were hit hard by the effects of the Great Depression; the burgeoning development of color advertisements in popular magazines, often including reproductions of fine art; and the interest of several major industrial corporations in repairing recently-damaged reputations by hiring fine artists to serve their various needs. Throughout this time period Lewenthal promoted the originality of his firm’s strategies in selling its five dollar signed prints and other artwork, and also the methods of sale he utilized and his collaborations with corporate industry. Many of these corporate commissions resulted in the mass distribution of reproductions of artwork in the form of calendars, corporate literature, and advertisements. This mass distribution had an impact on the public’s reception of the artwork, which, as will be seen, was both positive and negative. I explore these issues and evaluate both the critical and praiseworthy comments made by artists, executives, and critics in order to determine the ramifications of the various corporate programs with which Associated American Artists was involved.My critical assessment of Associated American Artists is the result of careful study of the firm’s activities as well as a comparison with its predecessors and contemporaries, as described in the secondary literature on the art market in the United States and Europe. The history of advertising, consumerism, and Regionalist art also played a role as I analyzed the relevant literature pertaining to those topics. The dissertation contributes greatly to a clearer understanding of Associated American Artists and its relationship to the social-historical context of the 1930s and 1940s.
