Thermosensation requires the activation of a unique collection of ion channels and receptors that work in concert to transmit thermal information. It is widely accepted that transient receptor potential melastatin 8 (TRPM8) activation is required for normal cold sensing; however, recent studies have illuminated major roles for other ion channels in this important somatic sensation. In addition to TRPM8, other TRP channels have been reported to contribute to cold transduction mechanisms in diverse sensory neuron populations, with both leak- and voltage-gated channels being identified for their role in the transmission of cold signals. Whether the same channels that contribute to physiological cold sensing also mediate noxious cold signaling remains unclear; however, recent work has found a conserved role for the kainite receptor, GluK2, in noxious cold sensing across species. Additionally, cold-sensing neurons likely engage in functional crosstalk with nociceptors to give rise to cold pain. This Review will provide an update on our understanding of the relationship between various ion channels in the transduction and transmission of cold and highlight areas where further investigation is required.

Mosquito-borne diseases affect hundreds of millions of people annually and disproportionately impact the developing world1,2. One mosquito species, Aedes aegypti, is a primary vector of viruses that cause dengue, yellow fever and Zika. The attraction of Ae. aegypti female mosquitos to humans requires integrating multiple cues, including CO2 from breath, organic odours from skin and visual cues, all sensed at mid and long ranges, and other cues sensed at very close range3-6. Here we identify a cue that Ae. aegypti use as part of their sensory arsenal to find humans. We demonstrate that Ae. aegypti sense the infrared (IR) radiation emanating from their targets and use this information in combination with other cues for highly effective mid-range navigation. Detection of thermal IR requires the heat-activated channel TRPA1, which is expressed in neurons at the tip of the antenna. Two opsins are co-expressed with TRPA1 in these neurons and promote the detection of lower IR intensities. We propose that radiant energy causes local heating at the end of the antenna, thereby activating temperature-sensitive receptors in thermosensory neurons. The realization that thermal IR radiation is an outstanding mid-range directional cue expands our understanding as to how mosquitoes are exquisitely effective in locating hosts.

This article reviews how rice respond to rising temperature by integrating the molecular regulatory pathways and introduce its physiological mechanisms of tolerance to heat stress from the perspective of molecular biology. In addition, genome selection and genetic engineering for rice heat tolerance were emphasized to provide a theoretical basis for the sustainability and stability of crop yield-quality structures under high temperatures from the point of view of molecular breeding. Plants have evolved mechanisms to anticipate and adjust their growth and development in response to environmental changes. Understanding the key regulators of plant performance is crucial to mitigate the negative influence of global climate change on crop production. EARLY FLOWERING 3 (ELF3) is one such regulator playing a critical role in the circadian clock and thermomorphogenesis. In Arabidopsis thaliana , ELF3 contains a prion-like domain (PrLD) that acts as a thermosensor, facilitating liquid–liquid phase separation at high ambient temperatures. To assess the conservation of this function across the plant kingdom, we traced the evolutionary emergence of ELF3, with a focus on the presence of PrLDs. We found that the PrLD, primarily influenced by the length of polyglutamine (polyQ) repeats, is most prominent in Brassicales. Analyzing 319 natural A. thaliana accessions, we confirmed the previously described wide range of polyQ length variation in At ELF3, but found it to be only weakly associated with geographic origin, climate conditions, and classic temperature-responsive phenotypes. Interestingly, similar polyQ length variation was not observed in several other investigated Bassicaceae species. Based on these findings, available prediction tools and limited experimental evidence, we conclude that the emergence of PrLD, and particularly polyQ length variation, is unlikely to be a key driver of environmental adaptation. Instead, it likely adds an additional layer to ELF3's role in thermomorphogenesis in A. thaliana , with its relevance in other species yet to be confirmed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract In recent years it became apparent that, in mammals, rhodopsin and other opsins, known to act as photosensors in the visual system, are also present in spermatozoa, where they function as highly sensitive thermosensors for thermotaxis. The intriguing question how a well-conserved protein functions as a photosensor in one type of cells and as a thermosensor in another type of cells is unresolved. Since the moiety that confers photosensitivity on opsins is the chromophore retinal, we examined whether retinal is substituted in spermatozoa with a thermosensitive molecule. We found by both functional assays and mass spectrometry that retinal is present in spermatozoa and required for thermotaxis. Thus, starvation of mice for vitamin A (a precursor of retinal) resulted in loss of sperm thermotaxis, without affecting motility and the physiological state of the spermatozoa. Thermotaxis was restored after replenishment of vitamin A. Using reversed-phase ultra-performance liquid chromatography mass spectrometry, we detected the presence of retinal in extracts of mouse and human spermatozoa. By employing UltraPerformance convergence chromatography, we identified a unique retinal isomer in the sperm extracts—tri-cis retinal, different from the photosensitive 11-cis isomer in the visual system. The facts (a) that opsins are thermosensors for sperm thermotaxis, (b) that retinal is essential for thermotaxis, and (c) that tri-cis retinal isomer uniquely resides in spermatozoa and is relatively thermally unstable, suggest that tri-cis retinal is involved in the thermosensing activity of spermatozoa.

Purpose: To measure core temperature (Tcore) in open-water (OW) swimmers during a 25-km competition and identify the predictors of Tcore drop and hypothermia-related dropouts. Methods: Twenty-four national- and international-level OW swimmers participated in the study. Participants completed a personal questionnaire and a body fat/muscle mass assessment before the race. The average speed was calculated on each lap over a 2500-m course. Tcore was continuously recorded via an ingestible temperature sensor (e-Celsius, BodyCap). Hypothermia-related dropouts (H group) were compared with finishers (nH group). Results: Average prerace Tcore was 37.5°C (0.3°C) (N = 21). 7 participants dropped out due to hypothermia (H, n = 7) with a mean Tcore at dropout of 35.3°C (1.5°C). Multiple logistic regression analysis found that body fat percentage and initial Tcore were associated with hypothermia (G2 = 17.26, P <.001). Early Tcore drop ≤37.1°C at 2500 m was associated with a greater rate of hypothermia-related dropouts (71.4% vs 14.3%, P =.017). Multiple linear regression found that body fat percentage and previous participation were associated with Tcore drop (F = 4.95, P =.019). There was a positive correlation between the decrease in speed and Tcore drop (r =.462, P <.001). Conclusions: During an OW 25-km competition at 20°C to 21°C, lower initial Tcore and lower body fat, as well as premature Tcore drop, were associated with an increased risk of hypothermia-related dropout. Global warming impacts crop production and threatens food security. Elevated temperatures are sensed by different cell components. Temperature increases are classified as either mild warm temperatures or excessively hot temperatures, which are perceived by distinct signaling pathways in plants. Warm temperatures induce thermomorphogenesis, while high-temperature stress triggers heat acclimation and has destructive effects on plant growth and development. In this review, we systematically summarize the heat-responsive genetic networks in Arabidopsis and crop plants based on recent studies. In addition, we highlight the strategies used to improve grain yield under heat stress from a source–sink perspective. We also discuss the remaining issues regarding the characteristics of thermosensors and the urgency required to explore the basis of acclimation under multifactorial stress combination. In this review, we summarize recent advances regarding the molecular basis of plant perception and response to temperatures during thermomorphogenesis and heat damage. Liquid–liquid phase separation (LLPS) is an important mechanism enabling the dynamic compartmentalization of macromolecules, including complex polymers such as proteins and nucleic acids, and occurs as a function of the physicochemical environment. In the model plant, Arabidopsis thaliana, LLPS by the protein EARLY FLOWERING3 (ELF3) occurs in a temperature-sensitive manner and controls thermoresponsive growth. ELF3 contains a largely unstructured prion-like domain (PrLD) that acts as a driver of LLPS in vivo and in vitro. The PrLD contains a poly-glutamine (polyQ) tract, whose length varies across natural Arabidopsis accessions. Here, we use a combination of biochemical, biophysical, and structural techniques to investigate the dilute and condensed phases of the ELF3 PrLD with varying polyQ lengths. We demonstrate that the dilute phase of the ELF3 PrLD forms a monodisperse higher-order oligomer that does not depend on the presence of the polyQ sequence. This species undergoes LLPS in a pH- and temperature-sensitive manner and the polyQ region of the protein tunes the initial stages of phase separation. The liquid phase rapidly undergoes aging and forms a hydrogel as shown by fluorescence and atomic force microscopies. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the hydrogel assumes a semiordered structure as determined by small-angle X-ray scattering, electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. These experiments demonstrate a rich structural landscape for a PrLD protein and provide a framework to describe the structural and biophysical properties of biomolecular condensates. Ambient temperature sensing by phytochrome B (PHYB) in Arabidopsis is thought to operate mainly at night. Here we show that PHYB plays an equally critical role in temperature sensing during the daytime. In daytime thermosensing, PHYB signals primarily through the temperature-responsive transcriptional regulator PIF4, which requires the transcriptional activator HEMERA (HMR). HMR does not regulate PIF4 transcription, instead, it interacts directly with PIF4, to activate the thermoresponsive growth-relevant genes and promote warm-temperature-dependent PIF4 accumulation. A missense allele hmr-22, which carries a loss-of-function D516N mutation in HMR's transcriptional activation domain, fails to induce the thermoresponsive genes and PIF4 accumulation. Both defects of hmr-22 could be rescued by expressing a HMR22 mutant protein fused with the transcriptional activation domain of VP16, suggesting a causal relationship between HMR-mediated activation of PIF4 target-genes and PIF4 accumulation. Together, this study reveals a daytime PHYB-mediated thermosensing mechanism, in which HMR acts as a necessary activator for PIF4-dependent induction of temperature-responsive genes and PIF4 accumulation.

Thermal discomfort is one of the main triggers for occupants' interactions with components of the built environment such as adjustments of thermostats and/or opening windows and strongly related to the energy use in buildings. Understanding causes for thermal (dis-)comfort is crucial for design and operation of any type of building. The assessment of human thermal perception through rating scales, for example in post-occupancy studies, has been applied for several decades; however, long-existing assumptions related to these rating scales had been questioned by several researchers. The aim of this study was to gain deeper knowledge on contextual influences on the interpretation of thermal perception scales and their verbal anchors by survey participants. A questionnaire was designed and consequently applied in 21 language versions. These surveys were conducted in 57 cities in 30 countries resulting in a dataset containing responses from 8225 participants. The database offers potential for further analysis in the areas of building design and operation, psycho-physical relationships between human perception and the built environment, and linguistic analyses.

SUMMARY: Plant cyclic nucleotide gated channels (CNGCs) facilitate cytosolic Ca2+ influx as an early step in numerous signaling cascades. CNGC‐mediated Ca2+ elevations are essential for plant immune defense and high temperature thermosensing. In the present study, we evaluated phenotypes of CNGC2, CNGC4, CNGC6, and CNGC12 null mutants in these two pathways. It is shown CNGC2, CNGC4, and CNGC6 physically interact in vivo, whereas CNGC12 does not. CNGC involvement in immune signaling was evaluated by monitoring mutant response to elicitor peptide Pep3. Pep3 response cascades involving CNGCs included mitogen‐activated kinase activation mediated by Ca2+‐dependent protein kinase phosphorylation. Pep3‐induced reactive oxygen species generation was impaired in cngc2, cngc4, and cngc6, but not in cngc12, suggesting that CNGC2, CNGC4, and CNGC6 (which physically interact) may be components of a multimeric CNGC channel complex for immune signaling. However, unlike cngc2 and cngc4, cngc6 is not sensitive to high Ca2+ and displays no pleiotropic dwarfism. All four cngc mutants showed thermotolerance compared to wild‐type, although CNGC12 does not interact with the other three CNGCs. These results imply that physically interacting CNGCs may, in some cases, function in a signaling cascade as components of a heteromeric channel complex, although this may not be the case in other signaling pathways. Significance Statement: We demonstrate that cyclic nucleotide gated channel (CNGC)2 and CNGC4 interact with CNGC6, and the attenuation of Pep triggered immunity in a null cngc6 mutant may be a result of the downstream involvement of CNGC6 in extracellular ATPinduced immune signaling. CNGC proteins could act as thermosensors in plants to acquire thermotolerance under mildly higher temperature conditions when necessary to survive under harmful heat stress. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, we focused on TRPV1 of African lungfish, Protopterus annectens. During drought at high temperature, African lungfish can survive by undergoing into aestivation in mud cocoons. Therefore, lungfish is considered to have some specialized heat-sensor, TRPV1, for heat tolerance. Further, lungfish which shares similarities with fishes and amphibians, is one of important species for investigating the fish-tetrapod transition. Since fish TRPV1 and tetrapod TRPV1 have some differences, character of lungfish TRPV1 attracts attention. Here, we first cloned TRPV1 paralogue from lungfish, Protopterus annectens (lfTRPV1) and determined the chemical and thermal sensitivities of lfTRPV1 by two-electrode voltage clamp method using frog oocytes. We detected activation of lfTRPV1 by acid and 2-APB, but capsaicin-induced activation was not observed. The sensitivity to acid of lfTRPV1 was similar to that of rat TRPV1 (rTRPV1), but the 2-APB sensitivity of lfTRPV1 was relatively weaker than rTRPV1. Heat stimulation up to 44 °C did not activate lfTRPV1 and the heat-activation was not detected even on acid condition of pH6. This dramatically decreased heat-sensitivity of TRPV1 may contribute the heat tolerance of African lungfish. TRPV1 is a polymodal receptor ion channel that is best known to function as a molecular thermometer. It is activated in diverse ways, including by heat, protons (low pH), and vanilloid compounds, such as capsaicin. In this review, we summarize molecular studies of TRPV1 thermosensing, focusing on the cross-talk between heat and other activation modes. Additional insights from TRPV1 isoforms and non-rodent/non-human TRPV1 ortholog studies are also discussed in this context. While the molecular mechanism of heat activation is still emerging, it is clear that TRPV1 thermosensing is modulated allosterically, i.e., at a distance, with contributions from many distinct regions of the channel. Similarly, current studies identify cross-talk between heat and other TRPV1 activation modes, such as protons and capsaicin, and that these modes can generally be selectively disentangled. In aggregate, this suggests that future TRPV1 molecular studies should define allosteric pathways and provide mechanistic insight, thereby enabling mode-selective manipulation of the polymodal receptor. Background: Infrared thermography devices have been commonly applied to measure superficial temperature in structural composites and walls. These tools were cheaper than other thermographic devices used to measure superficial human muscle tissue temperature. In addition, infrared thermography has been previously used to assess skin temperature related to muscle tissue conditions in the triceps surae of athletes. Nevertheless, the reliability and repeatability of an infrared thermography device designed for materials, such as the Manual Infrared Camera PCE-TC 30, have yet to be determined to measure skin temperature of the triceps surae muscle tissue of athletes. Objective: The purpose was to determine the procedure’s intra- and inter-session reliability and repeatability to determine skin temperature within the Manual Infrared Camera PCE-TC 30 thermography device in the triceps surae muscle tissue of athletes, which was initially designed to measure the superficial temperature of materials. Methods: A total of 34 triceps surae muscles were bilaterally assessed from 17 healthy athletes using the Manual Infrared Camera PCE-TC 30 thermography device to determine intra- (at the same day separated by 1 h) and inter-session (at alternate days separated by 48 h) reliability and repeatability of the skin temperature of the soleus, medial and lateral gastrocnemius muscles. The triceps surae complex weas measured by a region of interest of 1 cm² through five infrared thermography images for each muscle. Statistical analyses comprised intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), standard error of measurement (SEM), minimum detectable change (MCD), systematic error of measurement, correlation (r), and Bland-Altman plots completed with linear regression models (R²).Results: Intra- and inter-session measurements of the proposed infrared thermography procedure showed excellent reliability (ICC(1,2) = 0.968–0.977), measurement errors (SEM = 0.186–0.232 °C; MDC = 0.515–0.643 °C), correlations (r = 0.885–0.953), and did not present significant systematic error of measurements (P > 0.05). Adequate agreement between each pair of measurement moments was presented by the Bland-Altman plots according to the limits of agreement and non-significant linear regression models (R² = 0.000–0.019; P > 0.05). Conclusions: The proposed procedure to determine skin temperature within the Manual Infrared Camera PCE-TC 30 thermography device presented excellent intraand inter-session reliability and repeatability in athletes’ triceps surae muscle tissue. Parasitic helminth infections are the most common source of neglected tropical disease among impoverished global communities. Many helminths infect their hosts via an active, sensory-driven process in which environmentally motile infective larvae position themselves near potential hosts. For these helminths, host seeking and host invasion can be divided into several discrete behaviors that are regulated by both host-emitted and environmental sensory cues, including heat. Thermosensation is a critical sensory modality for helminths that infect warm-blooded hosts, driving multiple behaviors necessary for host seeking and host invasion. Furthermore, thermosensory cues influence the host-seeking behaviors of both helminths that parasitize endothermic hosts and helminths that parasitize insect hosts. Here, we discuss the role of thermosensation in guiding the host-seeking and host-infection behaviors of a diverse group of helminths, including mammalian-parasitic nematodes, entomopathogenic nematodes, and schistosomes. We also discuss the neural circuitry and molecular pathways that underlie thermosensory responses in these species.

Skin-penetrating parasitic nematodes infect approximately one billion people worldwide and are a major source of neglected tropical disease [1-6]. Their life cycle includes an infective third-larval (iL3) stage that searches for hosts to infect in a poorly understood process that involves both thermal and olfactory cues. Here, we investigate the temperature-driven behaviors of skin-penetrating iL3s, including the human-parasitic threadworm Strongyloides stercoralis and the human-parasitic hookworm Ancylostoma ceylanicum. We show that human-parasitic iL3s respond robustly to thermal gradients. Like the free-living nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, human-parasitic iL3s show both positive and negative thermotaxis, and the switch between them is regulated by recent cultivation temperature [7]. When engaging in positive thermotaxis, iL3s migrate toward temperatures approximating mammalian body temperature. Exposing iL3s to a new cultivation temperature alters the thermal switch point between positive and negative thermotaxis within hours, similar to the timescale of thermal plasticity in C. elegans [7]. Thermal plasticity in iL3s may enable them to optimize host finding on a diurnal temperature cycle. We show that temperature-driven responses can be dominant in multisensory contexts such that, when thermal drive is strong, iL3s preferentially engage in temperature-driven behaviors despite the presence of an attractive host odorant. Finally, targeted mutagenesis of the S. stercoralis tax-4 homolog abolishes heat seeking, providing the first evidence that parasitic host-seeking behaviors are generated through an adaptation of sensory cascades that drive environmental navigation in C. elegans [7-10]. Together, our results provide insight into the behavioral strategies and molecular mechanisms that allow skin-penetrating nematodes to target humans.

Ion channels turn diverse types of inputs, ranging from neurotransmitters to physical forces, into electrical signals. Channel responses to ligands generally rely on binding to discrete sensor domains that are coupled to the portion of the channel responsible for ion permeation. By contrast, sensing physical cues such as voltage, pressure, and temperature arises from more varied mechanisms. Voltage is commonly sensed by a local, domain-based strategy, whereas the predominant paradigm for pressure sensing employs a global response in channel structure to membrane tension changes. Temperature sensing has been the most challenging response to understand and whether discrete sensor domains exist for pressure and temperature has been the subject of much investigation and debate. Recent exciting advances have uncovered discrete sensor modules for pressure and temperature in force-sensitive and thermal-sensitive ion channels, respectively. In particular, characterization of bacterial voltage-gated sodium channel (BacNaV) thermal responses has identified a coiled-coil thermosensor that controls channel function through a temperature-dependent unfolding event. This coiled-coil thermosensor blueprint recurs in other temperature sensitive ion channels and thermosensitive proteins. Together with the identification of ion channel pressure sensing domains, these examples demonstrate that "local" domain-based solutions for sensing force and temperature exist and highlight the diversity of both global and local strategies that channels use to sense physical inputs. The modular nature of these newly discovered physical signal sensors provides opportunities to engineer novel pressure-sensitive and thermosensitive proteins and raises new questions about how such modular sensors may have evolved and empowered ion channel pores with new sensibilities.

The regulation of body temperature is one of the most critical functions of the nervous system. Here we review our current understanding of thermoregulation in mammals. We outline the molecules and cells that measure body temperature in the periphery, the neural pathways that communicate this information to the brain, and the central circuits that coordinate the homeostatic response. We also discuss some of the key unresolved issues in this field, including the following: the role of temperature sensing in the brain, the molecular identity of the warm sensor, the central representation of the labeled line for cold, and the neural substrates of thermoregulatory behavior. We suggest that approaches for molecularly defined circuit analysis will provide new insight into these topics in the near future.

Objective: This prospective case series aimed to clinically evaluate the bleaching effect, spontaneous tooth sensitivity, and variation in the thermal sensation threshold of different groups of teeth undergoing in-office bleaching., Method and Materials: Ten patients received conventional bleaching treatment: 35% hydrogen peroxide with three bleaching sessions of 45 minutes, evaluating color change (∆E and ∆E00), Whitening Index (WID), and tooth sensitivity (visual analog scale). Thermal stimulus-generating devices were used to simulate sensitivity caused by low temperatures through quantitative sensory tests. Analyses were conducted individually on different teeth groups (n = 20) (mandibular incisors, maxillary incisors, canines, maxillary first premolars)., Results: Regarding color change, mandibular and maxillary incisors did not statistically differ from each other but showed significant difference and greater bleaching potential compared to canines and maxillary first premolars (P = .018). Regarding sensitivity, mandibular and maxillary incisors presented the highest spontaneous sensitivity values (P = .032), while maxillary first premolars did not display painful symptoms, also observed in provoked sensitivity analysis (P = .025)., Conclusions: The general analysis of the results indicates that the tooth type affects the response to the whitening treatment, both in relation to the esthetic benefit and the occurrence of tooth sensitivity. It was observed that mandibular incisors reach the degree of chromatic saturation before canines and premolars, in addition to presenting greater bleaching sensitivity. Personalizing the treatment, based on prior knowledge of the degree of saturation, anatomical factors, and the risk of sensitivity, can provide considerable advantages in the whitening technique.

The purpose of this study was to design a local ventilation system (LVS) to help reduce the moisture content of a Scalder hall, evaluate its comfort and thermal stress before and after implementation of LVS and introduce an appropriate index to evaluate warm and humid workplaces. The design of the LVS was performed according to the ACGIH standard (VS-30-01). Heat stress and thermal comfort assessment were performed before and after LVS using humidity index (Humidex), discomfort index (DI), heat index (HI), wet-bulb globe temperature (WBGT) and predicted mean vote index (PMV) indices and the results were compared with predicted mean vote index-predicted percentage of dissatisfied (PMV-PPD) subjective indices. The results of heat stress parameters showed that LVS was able to reduce relative humidity (RH) and wet temperature (t nw ) by 47% and 7 ° C, respectively. This has caused subjects to feel the heat from hot and very RH hot to warm and the hot and percentage of dissatisfaction has dropped by more than 70%. Design and implementation of a LVS reduced the ambient t nw by decreasing RH. Mitigating Urban Heat Island (UHI) intensity in cities through adaptative strategies has become an urgent need, as UHI are also exacerbated by climate change impacts imputable to anthropogenic actions. This study addresses the need for reliable simulation models to analyze outdoor thermal comfort (OTC) in future or alternative scenarios. The aim of the present study is to contribute to the validation of CFD urban microclimate simulations by employing intra-urban canyon transects as an alternative or a complementary approach to fixed stations. To accomplish this, we developed a cost-effective monitoring unit to carry out transects on a pre-defined route (1), devised the area of interest (2), elaborated a simulation model in ENVI-met (3), and proposed different validation methods for comparative analyses (4). Results indicate that temporal validated simulation tended to underestimate thermal indices in the morning and night and overestimate them in the afternoon, while spatio-temporal validation under a human-centric comfort approach via wearable sensing notably improved accuracy. Moderate to very strong agreement between simulation and measurement data in summer (Willmot's d ~ 0.70, d ~ 0.81) and very strong agreement in winter (d ~ 0.79, d ~ 0.96), with low error magnitudes in summer (RMSE ~ 0.91℃ and 9.59%, MBE ~ 0.23℃ and 9.10%) have been found. In winter, such figures were RMSE ~ 0.71℃ and 3.51%, MBE ~ 0.00℃ and 0.98%, for the spatio-temporal validated model. Temperature is an omnipresent factor impacting on many aspects of life. In bacteria and ectothermic eukaryotes, various thermosensors and temperature-controlled switches have been described, ranging from RNA thermometers controlling the heat shock response in prokaryotes to temperature-dependent sex determination in reptiles, likely controlled through protein phosphorylation. However, the impact of subtle changes of human core body temperature are only beginning to be acknowledged. In this review, we will discuss thermosensing mechanisms and their functional implications with a focus on mammalian cells, also in the context of disease conditions. This study focuses on assessing tourists' perception of bioclimatic comfort in the urban context of Porto, Portugal, specifically in the areas of Avenida dos Aliados and Praça da Liberdade. The study examines the relationship between meteorological conditions, tourists' clothing choices, and their physical activity levels. The study integrates microclimatic measurements and questionnaire surveys carried out during the summers of 2019 and 2020, and the winter of 2019-2020. A comprehensive questionnaire following international standards was administered to a representative sample of 563 tourists. The results show significant variations in mean air temperature (AT), wind speed (Wχ), relative humidity (RH), global radiation (G RAD ), and total mean radiant temperature (T MRT ) over the study periods. The assessment of Outdoor Thermal Comfort (OTC) is based on ASHRAE 55 standards, using the Thermal Sensation Vote (TSV) scale and the tourists' opinions on their thermal preferences. Clothing choices are found to be influenced by AT, with tourists choosing lighter clothing in warmer conditions. Gender and age differences in clothing insulation (Icl) are identified, suggesting potential differences in OTC perception. AT varied significantly, with an inflection point in clothing choices at 21.7°C and a correlation between AT and reduction in clothing layers (r 2 = 0.846; p < 0.05). The study also observes seasonal variations in physical activity levels of tourists, with higher activity levels in summer due to milder weather (110.0 W·m⁻ 2 ). More thermally comfortable environments tend to promote a sense of well-being among visitors, which directly affects their satisfaction during their stay in the city. When tourists feel comfortable with the thermal conditions of the urban environment, they are more likely to explore and enjoy local attractions for longer periods of time, thereby enhancing their cultural and leisure experiences. Women tend to wear fewer layers of clothing than men in summer, reflecting potential differences in OTC perception. Results align with previous studies, indicating the impact of clothing insulation of individual subject (Icl) on OTC varies across locations and cultures. Cultural factors influence clothing preferences and thermal tolerance, emphasizing the need for nuanced considerations in understanding OTC perceptions. The study provides to the understanding of the OTC of tourists in the city of Porto, but also offers relevant contributions for improving the visitor experience and sustainable development, namely in other geographical contexts. Horizontal and vertical viewing perspectives exert varying influences on the environmental perceptions and emotional states of college students. Despite this, scant research addresses the impact on this demographic. We selected typical campus open spaces for comprehensive physical parameter assessments, encompassing meteorological and spatial characteristics. A cohort of 36 healthy college students participated in a questionnaire survey designed to ascertain shifts in visual comfort, thermal comfort, and emotional responses when viewing landscapes in look-forward and look-up orientations. Key findings following both viewing modalities included: 1) a notable rise in mean visual comfort vote (MVCV), by 1.22 for look-forward and 1.01 for look-up, with a pronouncedly higher sunlight sensation vote (SSV) for the latter orientation; 2) a significant increase in thermal comfort vote (TCV), although the difference in increments between the two viewing angles was minimal; 3) Positive affect (PA) exhibited considerable improvement in both viewing conditions, while negative affect (NA) was markedly reduced in the look-up condition relative to look-forward viewing; 4) The SSV was predominantly influenced by the trunk ratio and canopy-to-trunk ratio, with substantial weights of 31.47% and 32.15%, respectively. Landscape element diversity emerged as the most critical factor affecting visual comfort vote (VCV) and aesthetic assessment score (AAS), with overwhelming weights of 70.67% and 63.15%, respectively. In this article, we present simple, cost-effective, passive (non-gated) electronic devices based on single-layer (SL) chemical vapor deposited (CVD) graphene that show nonlinear and asymmetric current-voltage characteristics (CVCs) at ambient temperatures. Al 2 O 3 -Ti-Au contacts to graphene results in a nonlinear resistance to achieve nonlinearity in the CVC. Upon transfer to polyethylene terephthalate, the CVD-grown SL graphene shows mobility of 6200 cm 2 V -1 S -1 . We have observed both thermoelectric effect and thermoresistive sensing in the fabricated devices such as voltage and temperature concerning change in electronic power and resistance through asymmetric and nonlinear CVC. The device is stable both at low and high voltages (±200 mV to ±4 V) and temperatures (4 K - 300 K). Graphene-based thermosensing devices can be ultra-thin, cost-effective, non-toxic/organic, flexible, and high-speed for integration into future complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) interface, and wearable self-power electronics. Pregnant women have different thermal preferences during pregnancy. This paper aims to investigate the thermal characteristics of pregnant women in hospitals, addressing a research gap in the field of thermal comfort for this population. This study assessed the thermal environments of the pregnancy examination spaces (i.e., B-ultrasound room and waiting area) in a hospital located in Xi'an during the winter season. Data were collected from 1055 pregnant women at different stages of pregnancy, including demographic characteristics, thermal sensation votes (TSVs), thermal comfort votes (TCVs), and clothing insulation. The results show that the thermal sensation was significantly more influenced by the pregnancy stage than the current weight. Pregnant women in the third trimester reported a higher mean thermal sensation vote (MTSV) than in other pregnancy stages. Furthermore, the clothing insulation of pregnant women exhibited a non-normal distribution, resembling a bimodal structure. Based on this structure, typical clothing insulation values were determined to be 0.9 clo in the B-ultrasound room and 1.3 clo in the waiting area. Given these characteristics in both thermal perception and dressing behaviors of pregnant women via a subjective questionnaire, we advise lowering the temperature to ensure their comfort and save heating energy. Some personalized seats are also provided to compensate for differences in thermal preference at various stages of pregnancy. Introduction: There is considerable inter-individual variability in the physiological responses to environmental stressors and so to accurately assess and monitor changes in an individual's ability to cope with exercise-heat stress, a reliable protocol is required. The aim of this study was to examine the repeatability of a 90-min steady-state heat exercise bout with physiological and subjective variables, and performance during an incremental test to exhaustion post 90-min steady-state exercise., Method: Sixteen mixed ability males (Age: 39 ± 15yrs; Height: 176.5 ± 4.8 cm; BM: 79.7 ± 10.3 kg; V˙O 2peak : 46.2 ± 8.6 ml/kg/min; PPO: 309 ± 39W) who trained at least three times a week undertook two 90-min steady-state - followed by an incremental protocol to exhaustion - cycling heat stress tests (HSTs) in a hot-humid environment (35 °C, 60%RH). Heart rate (HR), rectal (T‾r e ) and skin temperature (T‾ sk ), rating of perceived exertion (RPE), thermal sensation (TS), and thermal comfort (TC) were measured throughout. Data was analysed using Intraclass Correlation Coefficients (ICC), technical error of measurement (TEM), Bland-Altman plots, t-tests, and Cohen's d to indicate magnitude of change., Results: Physiological variables indicated good repeatability evident through moderate to strong ICC ratings, low magnitudes of change (d), lower mean biases compared to their respective calculated TEMs, and statistical non-significance, except HR90, ₸ sk 90, and ₸ sk . Hydration status showed good repeatability except for urine osmolality (osm u 90) and resting urine colour (col u ). Perceptual variables showed encouraging repeatability apart from resting TS and mean TS. Performance data showed good repeatability overall, however 11 participants progressed to the incremental test to exhaustion in the second visit compared to 7 in the first., Conclusion: Current data demonstrated favourable physiological, perceptual, and performance repeatability during repeated cycling HSTs in hot-humid conditions. Purpose: Healthcare workers (HCWs) wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) experience physiological strain that can impair motor and psychological functions, potentially affecting patient care. We assessed the effects of heat exposure on maximal strength and risk-taking behavior among PPE-wearing HCWs and the efficacy of ice slurry to alleviate adverse effects., Methods: Seventeen HCWS completed two experimental trials in a crossover design, consuming 5 g·kg -1 of body mass of ambient drink (AMB) or ice slurry (ICE) before donning PPE and undergoing 2 h of simulated decontamination exercise (wet-bulb globe temperature (WBGT): 25.9°C ± 0.8°C, PPE microenvironment WBGT: 29.1°C ± 2.1°C). Body core temperature ( Tc ), heart rate (HR), chest skin temperature ( Tsk ), ratings of perceived exertion (RPE), thermal sensation (RTS), maximal voluntary contraction (MVC), risk-taking behavior (balloon analogue risk-taking task (BART)), and salivary cortisol were assessed., Results: Predrinking to postdrinking ∆ Tc was greater in ICE (-0.2°C ± 0.1°C) than AMB (-0.0°C ± 0.1°C, P = 0.003). Post-drinking RTS was lower in ICE (2.7 ± 1.2) than AMB (4.1 ± 0.4, P < 0.001). ICE and AMB had similar Tc and HR (both P > 0.05), but Tsk was lower in ICE than AMB ( P = 0.049). A lower MVC (30.3 ± 6.7 vs 27.4 ± 4.9 kg, P = 0.001) and higher BART-adjusted total pump count (472 ± 170 vs 615 ± 174 pumps, P = 0.017) was observed pretrial to posttrial in AMB but absent in ICE (both P > 0.05). Salivary cortisol was similar between trials ( P = 0.42)., Conclusions: Heat-exposed PPE-wearing HCWs had impaired maximal strength and elevated risk-taking behavior. This may increase the risk of avoidable workplace accidents that can jeopardize HCWs and patient care. Increasing heat stress in urban environments due to climate change has a significant adverse impact on human work and daily life. Street canyons as the main component of the underlying surface of the city and the main place of residents' activities, a comprehensive understanding of street morphology and tree planting practices can help to improve thermal comfort. Based on survey data and field experiments, this study designed 30 scenarios and employed ENVI-met model (version 5.0.3) to quantify the effect of street aspect ratio (H/W: H is building height and W is street width) and tree spacing (TS) on pedestrian thermal comfort in two differently oriented streets (north-south and east-west) in Taiyuan, China. Results showed that H/W ratio and TS significantly influenced the street thermal comfort mainly owing to shading. H/W ratio played a pivotal role in reducing mean radiant temperature (Tmrt) and physiological equivalent temperature (PET), and was negatively correlated with Tmrt and PET. Compared to no-tree scenarios, street trees significantly improved thermal comfort (mean reductions of Tmrt and PET were 12.74℃ and 5.66℃, respectively), and PET and Tmrt were significantly negatively correlated with TS. The improvement effect of street trees on Tmrt and PET in east-west oriented street was better than north-south oriented street. H/W = 1.0 and TS = 6 m appeared as the proposed combination to mitigate the summer thermal comfort in the temperate monsoon climate zone. Athletes with tetraplegia may experience marked hyperthermia while exercising under environmental heat stress due to their limited ability to dissipate heat through evaporative means. This study investigated the effectiveness of two external cooling strategies (i.e. , spraying water onto the body surface or using a cooling vest) on physiological and perceptual variables in tetraplegic athletes during and after an aerobic exercise session in a hot environment. Nine male wheelchair rugby players performed an incremental test to determine their maximum aerobic power output. After that, they were subjected to three experimental trials in a counter-balanced order: control (CON, no body cooling), cooling vest (CV), and water spraying (WS). During these trials, they performed 30 min of a submaximal exercise (at 65% of their maximum aerobic power) inside an environmental chamber set to maintain the dry-bulb temperature at 32 °C. The following variables were recorded at regular intervals during the exercise and for an additional 30 min following the exertion (i.e. , post-exercise recovery) with the participants also exposed to 32 °C: body core temperature (T CORE), skin temperature (T SKIN), heart rate (HR), rating of perceived exertion (RPE), thermal comfort (TC), and thermal sensation (TS). While exercising in CON conditions, the tetraplegic athletes had the expected increases in T CORE , T SKIN , HR, RPE, and TC and TS scores. HR, TC, and TS decreased gradually toward pre-exercise values after the exercise, whereas T CORE and T SKIN remained stable at higher values. Using a cooling vest decreased the temperature measured only on the chest and reduced the scores of RPE, TC, and TS during and after exercise but did not influence the other physiological responses of the tetraplegic athletes. In contrast, spraying water onto the athletes' body surface attenuated the exercise-induced increase in T SKIN , led to lower HR values during recovery, and was also associated with better perception during and after exercise. We conclude that water spraying is more effective than the cooling vest in attenuating physiological strain induced by exercise-heat stress. However, although both external cooling strategies do not influence exercise hyperthermia, they improve the athletes' thermal perception and reduce perceived exertion. • Tetraplegic athletes may overheat during exercise under environmental heat stress. • Water spraying reduced physiological strain more effectively than the cooling vest. • Both cooling strategies reduced perceived exertion during exercise-heat stress. • Both cooling strategies improved thermal perception during and after the exercise. • These strategies did not change the exercise-induced increase in core temperature. The effects of heat exposure on negative affect are thought to be central to the observed relationships between hot summer days and deleterious outcomes, such as violent crime or mental health crises. As these relationships are likely to be magnified by the effects of climate change, a better understanding of how consistent or variable the effects of hot weather on affective states is required. The current work combines data gathered from an ecological momentary assessment (EMA) study on individuals' thermal perceptions, comfort, and affective states in outdoor environments during their daily lives with high spatiotemporal resolution climate-modeled weather variables. Using these data, associations between objective weather variables (temperature, humidity, etc.), perceived heat (thermal perception and comfort), and affective states are examined. Overall, objective weather data reasonably predicted perception and comfort, but only comfort predicted negative affective states. The variance explained across individuals was generally very low in predicting negative affect or comfort, but within-person variance explained was high. In other words, while there may be a relatively consistent relationship between temperature and psychological experience for any given person, there are significant individual differences across people. Age and gender were examined as moderators of these relationships, and while gender had no impact, participant age showed several significant interactions. Specifically, while older adults tended to experience more thermal discomfort and perceived higher temperatures as hotter, the relationship between discomfort and negative affect was lower in older adults. Sensing of noxious heat has been reported to be mediated by TRPV1, TRPA1, TRPM3, and ANO1 in mice, and this is redundant so that the loss of one receptor is at least partially compensated for by others. We have established an infusion-based human heat pain model. Heat-induced pain probed with antagonists for the four receptors did not match the redundancy found in mice. In healthy participants, only TRPV1 contributes to the detection of noxious heat; none of the other three receptors are involved. TRPV1 inhibition reduced the pain at all noxious temperatures, which can also be seen as an increase in the temperature that causes a particular level of pain. However, even if the TRPV1-dependent shift in heat detection is about 1°C, at the end of the temperature ramp to 52°C, most heat-induced pain remains unexplained. This difference between species reopens the quest for the molecular safety net for the detection of noxious heat in humans.

Aim: To determine the existence of damage to thin sensitive fibres (Aδ and C) by quantitative sensory testing (QST) in female patients with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), the existence of pain, and a connection with the innervation field of the nerve itself., Methods: Forty-two consecutive female patients with symptoms of CTS participated in the research. According to the clinical findings and electroneurography they were divided into group I of 22 women with confirmed CTS and group II of 20 women with non-confirmed disease. Using QST, the threshold of heat and cold, and the threshold of pain caused by heat and cold on the thenar, second, and third finger of the dominant hand in both groups was determined., Results: There was a statistically significant difference in group I for the threshold of heat and cold detection and the threshold of pain caused by heat and cold between the thenar and the fingers. In the group II, there was a statistically significant difference in the threshold of heat detection between the thenar and the fingers. Rapid urbanization increases urban air temperature, considerably affecting health, comfort, and the quality of life in urban spaces. The accurate assessment of outdoor thermal comfort is crucial for urban health. In the present study, a high-resolution mesoscale model coupled with a layer Urban Canopy Model (WRF-UCM) is implemented over the city of Hyderabad (17.3850° N, 78.4867° E) to simulate urban meteorological conditions during the summer and winter period of 2009 and 2019. The universal thermal climate index (UTCI) has been estimated using the model-derived atmospheric variables and a human biometeorology parameter to assess the linkages between the outdoor environment and thermal comfort. Results revealed that during summer, the city experiences nearly 50 h of very strong thermal stress, whereas about 120 h of slight cold stress are experienced during winter. The urban area in Hyderabad expanded from 5 to 15% during the study period, leading to a 2.5℃ (2.8 ℃) increase in land surface temperature, and a 1.2 (1.9 ℃) rise in air temperature at 2 m height and 1.5 (2.5 ℃) UTCI during summer (winter) time. The analysis reveals that the maximum UTCI values were noticed over built-up areas compared to other land classes during daytime and nighttime. The results derived from the present study have shown that the performance of WRF-UCM-derived UTCI reasonably portrayed the significant impact of urbanization on thermal comfort over the city and provided useful insights with regard to urban comfort and welfare., (© 2024. In this study, we investigated factors related to subjective outdoor thermal comfort in the Ancient Ming Dynasty Walled City in Xi'an, China. Environmental data were collected from study sites by microclimate monitoring. Survey locations, demographics, psychological characteristics, thermal sensation vote (TSV), and thermal comfort vote (TCV) data were collected from 639 individuals in a questionnaire survey. Generalized linear regression analysis and path analysis were used to understand the associations between the TSV, environmental and psychological factors, and TCV. We found that green space locations, higher age, and greater subjective well-being and environmental satisfaction were associated with increased TCV. The universal thermal climate index was associated with TCV, and this association could have been affected by the individual's psychological state. Our findings suggest that environmental factors and psychological factors had non-negligible effects on the subjective thermal comfort of individuals located in an open urban area with historical and cultural significance.

The climate affects how a city's outdoor spaces are utilized. It is more likely that people will use and appreciate public areas designed for pedestrian use, such as parks, squares, streets, and foot-cycle pathways, when they provide a comfortable and healthy environment. A predicted increase in global temperature has made the climate uncomfortable, especially during the summer when heat stress is strengthened and anticipated. This phenomenon is more severe in urban areas, often affected by the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect. Since the spatial characteristics of a city influence its climate, urban design can be deployed to mitigate the combined effects of climate change and UHI. This research is conducted to study the UHI effect on thermal comfort in an urban open space in Rome (Italy) and aims at identifying and implementing a methodology that urban designers can follow to reduce the impact of urban heat islands and increase thermal comfort in urban outdoor space. This study is based on an urban design concept adopting the Sustainable Development Goals as guidelines; it investigates how UHI's effect affects the use of public space and examines the influence of urban microclimatic conditions on the thermal perception of users through PET, PMV and PPD values, that were assessed through simulations with ENVI-MET software. The study thus proposes a redesign for the site in Rome, with a masterplan based on sustainable design principles, aimed at improving the microclimatic conditions in the site. The outdoor thermal comfort (OTC) of children is more specific than that of adults, and the complex influence of outdoor activity spaces on children's thermal comfort warrants further investigation. To investigate the outdoor thermal comfort baseline (OTCB) of children in Hangzhou and explore the thermal impact of outdoor surfaces on children, a survey was conducted in six typical outdoor activity spaces in Hangzhou, China, during spring and summer utilizing physical measurements, questionnaire surveys, and the universal thermal climate index (UTCI). This study analyzed the differences in thermal perception among children in Hangzhou in different seasons, their OTCB, and the impact of surface reflectance (R s ) on children's OTC. The results indicated the following: 1) In spring, children in Hangzhou generally felt comfortable, but their discomfort with heat noticeably increased in summer. 2) The neutral UTCIs (NUTCIs) for Hangzhou children were 11.6 °C (spring) and 27.7 °C (summer), and the NUTCI ranges (NUTCIRs) were 9.7-17.5 °C (spring) and 25.7-30.0 °C (summer); additionally, the thermal acceptability ranges (TARs) were 13.2-25.2 °C (spring) and 11.8-34.8 °C (summer). 3) A high R s made children feel more uncomfortable with heat, which was primarily due to the space's total shortwave and longwave radiation, which peaked between 14:00 and 15:00. 4) Based on the research findings, corresponding bioclimatic design strategies were proposed. Recommendations include using high R s underlays with shading, composite underlays, or the future adoption of thermochromic coatings. Keeping permeable underlays moist is essential for activating their cooling mechanisms. Fundamental safety measures are imperative. Little has been studied about microclimate and the thermal comfort during the implementation of silvopastoral systems. This study aimed to evaluate the microclimate and thermal comfort during the implementation of High Biodiversity Silvopastoral System with Nuclei (SPSnu). Three treatments were investigated, SPSnu with 5 and 10% of the pasture area with nuclei, (SPSnu5 and SPSnu10, respectively), and treeless pasture (TLP). Each treatment was subdivided into 4 areas: within the nuclei, around the nuclei, around the nuclei with shade and internuclei. The analyzed variables were soil surface temperature, air temperature, wind speed, relative humidity, black globe temperature and the Heat Load Index (HLI) at 20 and 120 cm height. We hypothesized that the wind speed reduction associated with insufficient shade projection typical of the first years of SPSs may interfere in microclimate and thermal comfort during the hot seasons. SPSnu5 and SPSnu10 had a reduction in wind speed of 51.58% and 68.47% respectively when compared to TLP at 20 cm. Soil surface temperature and air temperature at 120 cm were higher for SPSnu than TLP. The same effect was observed for the HLI. At 20 cm, HLI indicated better thermal comfort in TLP than in the SPSnu treatments. The lack of shade projection from young nuclei in conjunction with the decrease of wind speed between the nuclei caused a higher air temperature and HLI in the SPSnu treatments, we called this conditions, windbreak countereffect. Sportswear manufactured from hygroscopic fibres can absorb moisture during activity or intermittent exercise and may change the thermal management of clothing. This change in the thermal behaviour of the fabric can lead to buffer the post-exercise chill. During activity in a moderately cold environment clothing made of 100% wool fibre helps wearers to slow down evaporative and conductive cooling, which can provide more thermal and comfort sensation compared to 100% cotton, 100% viscose, and 100% polyester. Twelve males performed cycling in a controlled climate chamber of temperature: 15 ± 0.5 °C, and relative humidity (RH):50 ± 5% followed by a drying phase in a windy environment by wearing full-sleeve t-shirts. Wool shirt was observed to hold a greater torso skin temperature ( p  < 0.05) than the other fibre types. Participants were asked a range of comfort-related questions at varying intervals. The temperature sensation was found ( p  < 0.05) significant for wool clothing. Moreover, participants rated wool shirt significantly ( p  < 0.05) as more comfortable during the post-exercise phase.

Individual heating systems, such as the air-source heat pump (ASHP) air-conditioner or floor heating (FH), are usually used by people living in the hot summer and cold winter (HSCW) zone of China to heat indoor climates in the winter. However, little research has been conducted in the HSCW zone on the thermal comfort difference between indoor climates heated by ASHP air-conditioners and those heated by floor heating, as well as how occupants adapt to different indoor climates. We conducted a comparative field experiment in ASHP-heated and FH-heated apartments in Nanjing to investigate how different types of heating systems influence the thermal sensation of occupants, and we conducted a comparative field experiment in ASHP-heated office buildings and naturally ventilated teaching buildings in Shanghai to investigate how occupants adapt to different indoor thermal environments. Indoor environmental parameters and body surface temperatures were measured using instruments, and occupants' thermal sensation, activity level, and clothing were evaluated using the questionnaire. The results show that floor heating improves thermal comfort by raising foot temperature compared to the ASHP air-conditioner, and that occupants become acclimatized to different indoor climates by adjusting neutral operative temperature. According to the findings, there is no need to overheat the indoor environment in the HSCW zone because occupants can adapt to their experienced thermal environment and it is critical to maintain warm foot temperature in the cool/cold indoor environment., (© 2024. The fan cooling vest is coming into very common use by Japanese outdoor manual workers. We examined that to what extent using this vest reduces thermal strain and perception during outdoor exercise in the heat on a sunny summer day. Ten male baseball players in high school conducted two baseball training sessions for 2-h with (VEST) or without (CON) a commercially available fan cooling vest on a baseball uniform. These sessions commenced at 10 a.m. on separate days in early August. The fan airflow rate attached the vest was 62 L·s -1 . Neither ambient temperature (Mean ± SD: VEST 31.9 ± 0.2°C; CON 31.8 ± 0.7°C), wet-bulb globe temperature (VEST 31.2 ± 0.4°C; CON 31.4 ± 0.5°C) nor solar radiation (VEST 1008 ± 136 W·m -2 ; CON 1042 ± 66 W·m -2 ) was different between trials. Mean skin temperature (VEST 34.5 ± 1.1°C; CON 35.1 ± 1.4°C), infrared tympanic temperature (VEST 38.9 ± 0.9°C; CON 39.2 ± 1.2°C), heart rate (VEST 127 ± 31 bpm; CON 139 ± 33 bpm), body heat storage (VEST 140 ± 34 W·m -2 ; CON 160 ± 22 W·m -2 ), thermal sensation (- 4-4: VEST 0 ± 2; CON 3 ± 1) and rating of perceived exertion (6-20: VEST 11 ± 2; CON 14 ± 2) were lower in VEST than CON (all P < 0.05). Total distance measured with a global positioning system (VEST 3704 ± 293 m; CON 3936 ± 501 m) and body fluid variables were not different between trials. This study indicates that the fan cooling vest use can reduce thermal strain and perception during outdoor exercise in the heat on a sunny summer day. Inclusive thermal comfort solutions should accommodate the need of clinical groups such as people with Multiple Sclerosis (pwMS), who experience abnormal thermal sensitivity. The aim of this study was to develop high-density body maps of temperature sensitivity in pwMS to inform the design of patient-centred personal comfort systems. Fourteen pwMS (6 M/8 F; 48.6 ± 10.0 y) and 13 healthy individuals (CTR; 5 M/8 F; 47.8 ± 10.4) underwent a quantitative sensory test in a thermoneutral environment, during which they rated their local thermal sensations arising from the application of warm (39°C) and cold (27°C) stimuli to 115 bilateral body sites across the face, torso, upper and lower limbs. We used a z-transformation to create maps of hypo- and hyper-sensitivity for each individual MS participant using normative CTR data. We found that 50% of pwMS (N = 7/14) presented a loss of cold sensitivity over the upper limb, and a loss of warm sensitivity over the feet. Furthermore, 36% of pwMS (N = 5) presented warm hyper-sensitivity over the upper limb. Finally, cold sensitivity loss and warm sensitivity gain were more evenly distributed and affected a greater proportion of skin sites in MS (i.e. cold hypo-sensitivity = 44% of tested sites; warm hyper-sensitivity = 14%) than warm sensitivity loss (i.e. 10%), which was more focused on sites such as the feet. Our findings highlight the need to consider "thermosensory corrective power" when designing personal comfort systems, to accommodate either thermosensory loss or gain in pwMS. This study aims to investigate the predictive occupant demographic characteristics of thermal sensation (TS) and thermal satisfaction (TSa) as well as to find the most effective machine learning (ML) algorithms for predicting TS and TSa. To achieve this, a survey campaign was carried out in three mixed-mode buildings to develop TS and TSa prediction models by using six ML algorithms (Logistic Regression, Naïve Bayes, Decision Tree (DT), Random Forest (RF), K-Nearest Neighborhood (KNN) and Support Vector Machine). The prediction models were developed based on six demographic characteristics (gender, age, thermal history, education level, income, occupation). The results show that gender, age, and thermal history are significant predictors of both TS and TSa. Education level, income, and occupation were not significant predictors of TS, but were significant predictors of TSa. The study also found that RF and KNN are the most effective ML algorithms for predicting TS, while DT and RF are the most effective ML algorithms for predicting TSa. The study found that the accuracy of TS prediction models ranges from 83% to 99%, with neutral being the most correctly classified scale. Thermal indices and thermal comfort maps have great importance in developing health-minded climate action strategies and livable urban layouts. Especially in cities where vulnerability to heatwaves is high, it is necessary to detect the most appropriate indicators for the regional characteristics and action planning with respect to thermal comfort. The aim of the study is to examine thermal indices as indicators of regional climate characteristics by relating to meteorological parameters and spatial features. Atmospheric variables including air temperature, wind speed, cloud cover, and relative humidity data were obtained from 30 meteorological stations located in districts having different climatic features. Heat stress levels for apparent temperature (AT), heat index (HI), wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT), physiological equivalent temperature (PET), universal thermal climate index (UTCI), and perceived temperature (PT) indices were calculated and associated with meteorological parameters. Thermal comfort maps have been created with the daily mean and maximum values of all indices. As a result, the meteorological parameters with the strongest correlation with all thermal indices are air temperature (T a ) with r = 0.89 ± 0.01 and mean radiant temperature (T mrt ) with r = 0.75 ± 0.16. The differences in thermal stress levels over the city have been distinctively observed in the AT max , PET max , and PT max maps, which are generated by the daily maximum values of the indices.
