Innovation has long been associated with technology alone. This edited volume describes the development of social innovation in the social and health sectors, mainly in French-speaking Switzerland, and discusses the different ways in which it is conceptualised and understood. The aim of the book is to give visibility to initiatives implemented in contexts as diverse as socio-professional integration, homelessness, palliative care, psychiatry and child protection. It is aimed at anyone who wants to understand what social innovation is, some of its methods and tools, as well as the obstacles it can face and some of its positive effects, such as social cohesion in an urban environment, support for elderly people suffering from dementia or parenting support in the context of addiction.

In diesem Open-Access-Sammelband werden verschiedene Leistungsdimensionen und Datenzugänge für Abbildung medizinischer Forschung empirisch dargestellt und diskutiert. Leitfragen sind dabei: Wie identifizieren wir Qualität in der medizinischen Forschung? Unter welchen Bedingungen lassen sich medizinische Themen bestmöglich beforschen, um das Patientenwohl und die öffentliche Gesundheit zu fördern sowie Wissenschaft und Gesellschaft voranzubringen? Dieser Logik folgend startet der Sammelband mit Überblicksdarstellungen zum Stand der Evaluation medizinischer Forschung in Deutschland, führt dann auf die eher methodischen, informationswissenschaftlichen Aspekte und empirischen Perspektiven auf die Evaluation medizinischer Forschung und ergänzt diese mit soziologischen Aspekten zur Evaluation medizinischer Forschung als Steuerungsinstrument.

The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has led to a substantial reorganisation of hospital structures. The oncological care system itself has been reorganised in an attempt to guarantee, on the one hand, the safety of patients and healthcare personnel and, on the other, continuity of care. The project presented in this volume analyses the difficulties and responses of the Emilia-Romagna oncology system in the face of the COVID-19 health emergency through the impact of this reorganisation on the illness trajectories of patients and on the care work of the various actors involved in defining these trajectories. The containment of COVID risk entailed a substantial effort in terms of safety management on the part of healthcare personnel. In addition, limitations on access to hospital environments, imposed as measures to contain contagion, have led to the exclusion of family members and voluntary associations from hospitals and, consequently, to greater patient loneliness at all stages of the care pathway. The care they provide includes a component of ‘invisible work’ that the pandemic situation has allowed to emerge. The response of hospital staff, and nurses in particular, has been in two directions in order to make up for these shortcomings: on the one hand, by increasing the emotional support for patients; on the other, through good practices geared towards meeting patients' needs, understood not only in a biomedical sense, but also in a psychological and relational one. In some respects, the pandemic has been countered by a greater humanisation of care and greater attention to patients' needs in their entirety and complexity. The results presented suggest some ways of responding to these needs in order to build increasingly patient-centred oncology services.

Folk Devils and Moral Panics in the COVID-19 Pandemic analyses the phenomena of moral panics surrounding so-called folk devils in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. In this volume, internationally recognised moral panic scholars from disciplines including sociology, media studies, criminology, and cultural studies examine case studies of moral panics related to the COVID-19 pandemic. These analyses consider the different social, political, economic, organisational, and cultural contexts within which such moral panics emerged and assess how the concept of moral panic can be deployed to offer novel insights into sociocultural responses to the outbreak. By utilising both classical approaches to moral panic analysis and more recent trends, chapters discuss the utility of the concept of moral panic that is, for the first time, applied to a global-scale event like the COVID-19 pandemic. This volume will be of interest to students and scholars in the social sciences with an interest in moral panics, responses to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the media and popular culture.

Als die Covid-19-Pandemie im Frühjahr 2020 ausbrach, konnte die mediale Kommunikation an bereits vorhandenes Wissen, Narrative und ein Bilderreservoir anknüpfen, die aus der populärkulturellen Auseinandersetzung mit ansteckenden Krankheiten und Seuchenkatastrophen stammen: In zahllosen Comics, Spielfilmen, TV-Serien und digitalen Spielen werden bereits seit Jahrzehnten Diskurse von Ansteckung und Abschottung, von kollabierenden Gesundheitssystemen und gesellschaftlichen Ausnahmezuständen konstruiert, kommuniziert und konsumiert. Die Beiträger*innen bieten eine breit gefächerte aktuelle Topografie des popkulturellen Wissens um Pandemien in ihren medial-diskursiven Erscheinungsformen - und helfen so, das kulturelle Gedächtnis zum Thema zu bewahren.

In health and medicine, imagining the future is essential in giving meaning to the past and the present and for propelling people into action. This is true not only at the level of individuals as they envision and carry out everyday activities and long-term plans but also for institutional practices framed by and unfolding within various socio-political ecologies and transfigurations. Hope and uncertainty are critical affective and knowledge-related modalities of such imaginations and assume vital meanings in policing, managing, and experiencing health, illness, and well-being. This volume brings together contributions from medical anthropologists who address this theme across various medical spheres, including the pragmatics of hope and uncertainty, the techno-sphere, health management, and individual and socially distributed emotions.

This book explores dementia-related aggression, violence, and homicide through a detailed analysis of “gray mist killings.” The term gray mist killing refers to intimate partner homicides (IPHs) committed by spouses/partners suffering from dementia, homicides of dementia sufferers committed by their caregiving spouses/partners or other family members, and IPHs attributable to the complications of caring for a co-resident family member suffering from dementia. Killings by people with dementia raise questions about the role of biological, psychological, and sociological forces. This book therefore encourages discussions around the relative weighting of these interrelated forces, and why the criminal justice system and the courts have a hard time handling these killings. It also adds to our understanding of the social responses to people with dementia, the orchestration of services, the nature of caring, and the interaction between sufferers and those familial, community, and state actors that provide support and care. The vividly detailed case studies (from the US, UK and Australia) uniquely inform criminological debates about violence, homicide, and the social responses to these complex phenomena. They are organized around the apparent motives for the killing, such as mercy, theft, prior intimate partner violence, mental illness, and exhaustion. The social responses of families, communities, and state actors are examined and contextualized against what researchers and dementia specialists suggest are promising or best practices for intervention. Apparent triggers or circumstantial precipitants for the killings invite discussion of signals, risks, and preventive interventions. The book culminates in an attempt to make sense of gray mist killings, as well as a discussion of broader implications and significance in relation to globalization, violence against women, the rising prevalence of the dementias, declining birthrates, climate change, and sustainable economic development. Drawing from a variety of disciplines, this book will be of great interest to students and scholars of criminology, sociology, psychology, psychiatry, anthropology, gender studies, social work, law, public policy, and gerontology. This book examines the increasing body of research dedicated to the lasting differences between the former separate states of the Federal German Republic (FRG) and the German Democratic Republic (GDR). Thirty years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, it takes a broad view on German unification and transformation research. Transformation and unification processes in East and West Germany are still ongoing, and they may serve as a model for social change and its political, economic, and psychological consequences. Using advanced statistical methods of analysis, this edited volume provides insights into the valuable contextualization of individual and social phenomena that current research on German unification and transformation is producing. Following the open science mindset using code and data, the authors investigate temporal trends in (1) mental health, (2) political attitudes, and (3) work and family life. It explores changes in mental health and political attitudes, as well as continued differences in work and family arrangements, that may stem from heterogeneous experiences within the systems and during the transformation process. This book examines how the COVID-19 pandemic has engendered a new and challenging environment in which borders drawn around people, places, and social structures have hardened and new ones have emerged. Over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, borders closed or became unwelcoming at the international, national, sub-national, and local levels. Debate persists as to whether those countries and territories that tightly managed their borders, like New Zealand, Australia, or Hong Kong, got it ‘right’ compared to those that did not. Without doubt, a majority of those who suffered and died throughout the pandemic have been those from vulnerable populations. Yet on the other hand, efforts taken to manage the spread of the disease, such as through border management, have also disproportionately affected those who are most vulnerable. How then is the right balance to be struck, acknowledging, too, the economic and other imperatives that may dissuade governments from taking public health steps? This book considers how international organizations, countries, and institutions within those countries should conceive of, and manage, borders as the world continues to struggle with COVID-19 and prepares for the next pandemic. Engaging a range of international, and sub-national, examples, the book thematizes the main issues at stake in the control and management of borders in the interests of public health. This book will be of considerable interest to academics in the fields of health law, anthropology, economics, history, medicine, public health, and political science, as well as policymakers and public health planners at national and sub-national levels.

Mind Museums offer a fresh perspective on the heritage of mental health, bringing museums into sharp focus. While it has become fashionable in the arena of international health to think about health systems, the theoretical underpinning of Niklas Luhmann's vast and productive theory has been given too little consideration in the field. It is rich in concepts that can facilitate a fuller understanding of what health systems are. João Costa applies these concepts and shows the analytical possibilities they open up. Noncommunicable Diseases: A Compendium introduces readers to noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) – what they are, their burden, their determinants and how they can be prevented and controlled. Focusing on cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer and chronic respiratory disease and their five shared main risk factors (tobacco use, harmful use of alcohol, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity and air pollution) as defined by the United Nations, this book provides a synopsis of one of the world’s biggest challenges of the 21st century. NCDs prematurely claim the lives of millions of people across the world every year, with untold suffering to hundreds of millions more, trapping many people in poverty and curtailing economic growth and sustainable development. While resources between and within countries largely differ, the key principles of surveillance, prevention and management apply to all countries, as does the need to focus resources on the most cost-effective and affordable interventions and the need for strong political will, sufficient resources, and sustained and broad partnerships. This compendium consists of 59 short and accessible chapters in six sections: (i) describing and measuring the burden and impact of NCDs; (ii) the burden, epidemiology and priority interventions for individual NCDs; (iii) social determinants and risk factors for NCDs and priority interventions; (iv) global policy; (v) cross-cutting issues; and (vi) stakeholder action. Drawing on the expertise of a large and diverse team of internationally renowned policy and academic experts, the book describes the key epidemiologic features of NCDs and evidence-based interventions in a concise manner that will be useful for policymakers across all parts of society, as well as for public health and clinical practitioners.

The point of this chapter is to disrupt the ‘truth’ that food marketing contributes to childhood obesity by critically examining how certainty about this relationship is (re)produced through expert knowledge and the unquestioning acceptance of the ‘junk food marketing = childhood obesity’ discourse. My aim here is to illuminate how dominant obesity discourses work to produce ‘regimes of truth’ about the relationship between food marketing and childhood obesity; how expertise, power, knowledge, and discourses congeal and cohere to (re)produce the taken-for-granted assumption that junk food marketing = childhood obesity. In a similar vein to Gard and Wright’s critique of ‘certain’ obesity discourses in physical education, my central concern is how scholars – particularly in the field of public health – contribute to the dismantlement of uncertainty (with respect to knowledge about the relationship between ‘junk’ food advertising and fatness) and the concomitant construction of certainty “where none seems justified”.

Taller people tend to weigh more than shorter people. This chapter will interrogate how weight varies with height. The body mass index (BMI, calculated as weight (W) divided by height (H) squared) is one way to express weight adjusted for height. It is widely used with the advantages of being technically uncomplicated, non-invasive, easy to measure and calculate. Where did it come from? How did it become the definition of a disease?

COVID-19 has brought unprecedented challenges in the care of older adults. During the first surge of the pandemic, governments all over the world struggled with high disease severity and increased mortality among older adults. This work documents the impact of the pandemic by collating information from different countries and by synthesizing inputs from several knowledge domains—Sociology, Gerontology, Geriatrics, Medicine and Public Health. The impact on older adults is examined primarily with respect to three main issues—pervasive ageism, spread of infections in care homes worldwide, and the unintended harm of public health measures on geriatric population in different care settings. The complex tensions between epidemic control and the need to respond to social and economic imperatives are investigated with respect to disadvantaged and vulnerable older adults. The book also critically examines international ageing policies with the intention of identifying gaps in pandemic response in particular, and approaches to older adult care in general. In the light of the evidence presented, lessons are drawn which might improve aged care and strengthen emergency preparedness.Finally, considering the evolving nature of the pandemic, new international responses to older adult care and pandemic management are presented as an epilogue. It is anticipated that the book would help nourish critical thinking and implement new solutions to older care during and beyond the pandemic

Die Ästhetisch-Plastische Chirurgie verzeichnet stetig steigende Eingriffszahlen und polarisiert hinsichtlich ihrer Intentionen und Effekte wie kaum eine andere Fachdisziplin. Julia Wustmanns wissenssoziologische Studie rekonstruiert die Verhandlung zur Legitimität der Ästhetisch-Plastischen Chirurgie als medizinischer Profession und verschränkt dafür die Perspektive von Alltagsakteur*innen mit der von ästhetisch-plastischen Chirurg*innen. In der Zusammenführung von gesellschaftlichen Betrachtungsweisen und medizinprofessionellen Eigenverständnissen wird die Ambivalenz der Fachdisziplin deutlich, die sich auf die Gleichzeitigkeit von legitimierenden und diskreditierenden Mustern zurückführen lässt.

Die Kenntnis über eine Behinderung des Ungeborenen wird von betroffenen Eltern oft als schockierend erlebt. Neben der Schwangeren sind auch werdende Väter von einem Befund emotional betroffen. Entsprechende Aufmerksamkeit wird Männern in dieser Situation aber kaum zuteil. »Kann und möchte ich Vater eines behinderten Kindes sein? Welche Entscheidung wird meine Partnerin treffen? Was heißt es für uns als Paar, mit einem behinderten Kind zu leben?« - Im Spannungsverhältnis zwischen der eigenen Belastung und einer erlebten Verantwortung berichten Männer von ihren Erfahrungen, Konflikten und deren Bewältigung.

Vor mehr als 50 Jahren wurde in Deutschland eine Psychiatriereform eingeleitet, die aus den vormaligen Anstalten ein gemeindeorientiertes System sozialpsychiatrischer Hilfen formte. Von den Anfängen nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg bis zur Gegenwart bettet Christian Reumschüssel-Wienert die Entwicklung der Psychiatrie in die sozioökonomische, politische und kulturelle Entwicklung der Bundesrepublik ein. Eine integrierte Sichtweise berücksichtigt sozialpsychiatrische Diskurse ebenso wie psychiatrie- und behindertenpolitische Aspekte in klinischen und außerklinischen Kontexten. Es zeigt sich, dass die Sozialpsychiatrie gesellschaftliche Modernisierungsschübe reflektiert und nachholend umsetzt.

Schmerz ist kulturell überformt. Durch das kulturelle Phänomen der Verfeinerung des Spürens werden unsere Körper immer empfindlicher. Am Beispiel von Kopfschmerzen kann Stefan Dreßke zeigen, dass die physische Empfindlichkeit den Normen und Praktiken sozialer Milieus, des Geschlechts und des Alters folgt. Die soziologische Studie mit Berichten von 136 Frauen und Männern untersucht die sich zunehmend differenzierenden Deutungen des Körperausdrucks und den Wandel der Krankheitsvorstellungen. Dabei wird deutlich, dass Krankheiten der Empfindlichkeit Narrative sind, die der Verständigung in Sprach- und Praxiscodes dienen und die institutionellen Regimes folgen.

Wir leben im Zeitalter des asymptomatischen Menschen. Die Medikalisierung unserer Lebenswelt ist so weit vorangeschritten, dass Krankheitsbegriffe, die unseren Alltag maßgeblich prägen, kaum noch Überschneidungen mit unserer sinnlichen Erfahrung aufweisen. Lebenswissenschaften, Biotechnologien und Versorgungssysteme bestimmen unseren Umgang mit Gegenwart, Körper und Macht. Bildgebende Verfahren und Bioinformatik verwandeln medizinische Prognostik in einen selbstreferenziellen Wert. Hans Vogt zeigt: Nicht mehr nur bestimmte Lebensabschnitte haben Krankheitsstatus. Vielmehr bewegt sich der Mensch der Spätmoderne stets in fließend ineinander übergehenden Modulationen einer lebenslangen Diagnose.

Thure von Uexküll (1908-2004) ist einer der Väter der psychosomatischen Medizin in Deutschland. Sein lebenslanges Bemühen um eine naturphilosophisch-systemtheoretisch begründete bio-psycho-soziale Medizin ist unverändert aktuell. Ottmar Leiß nimmt sich diesem Pionier an und betrachtet in aktueller Relektüre seine theoretischen Ansätze und die Auswirkungen seiner Arbeiten u.a. auf das medizinische Menschenbild und das Verhältnis zwischen ärztlich Tätigen und Patient*innen. Die Integration von Salutogenese und Hartmut Rosas Resonanztheorie in Uexkülls Konzepte machen diese zum handlungsleitenden Kompass für eine humane Medizin.

The problem of addiction is one of the major challenges and controversies confronting medicine and society. It also poses important and complex philosophical and scientific problems. What is addiction? Why does it occur? And how should we respond to it, as individuals and as a society?

How can we learn to notice the signs of disability? We see indications of disability everywhere: yellow diamond-shaped “deaf person in area” road signs, the telltale shapes of hearing aids, or white-tipped canes sweeping across footpaths. But even though the signs are ubiquitous, Stephanie L. Kerschbaum argues that disability may still not be perceived due to a process she terms “dis-attention.” To tell better stories of disability, this multidisciplinary work turns to rhetoric, communications, sociology, and phenomenology to understand the processes by which the material world becomes sensory input that then passes through perceptual apparatuses to materialize phenomena—including disability. By adding perception to the understanding of disability’s materialization, Kerschbaum significantly expands our understanding of disability, accounting for its fluctuations and transformations in the semiotics of everyday life. Drawing on a set of thirty-three research interviews focused on disabled faculty members’ experiences with disability disclosure, as well as written narratives by disabled people, this book argues for the materiality of narrative, suggesting narratives as a means by which people enact boundaries around phenomena and determine their properties. Signs of Disability offers strategies and practices for challenging problematic and pervasive forms of “dis-attention” and proposes a new theoretical model for understanding disability in social, rhetorical, and material settings.

This edited collection compares and analyses the most prominent political communicative responses to the outbreak and global spread of the COVID-19 strain of coronavirus within 27 nations across five continents and two supranational organisations: the EU and the WHO. The book encompasses the various governments’ communication of the crisis, the role played by opposition and the vibrancy of the information environment within each nation.The chapters analyse the communication drawing on theoretical perspectives drawn from the fields of crisis communication, political communication and political psychology. In doing so the book develops a framework to assess the extent to which state communication followed the key indicators of effective communication encapsulated in the principles of: being first; being right; being credible; expressing empathy; promoting action; and showing respect. The book also examines how communication circulated within the mass and social media environments and what impact differences in spokespersons, messages and the broader context has on the success of implementing measures likely to reduce the spread of the virus. When I began that work in 1992, we knew what caused AIDS, how it spread, and how to avoid getting it, but we didn't know how to treat it or how to prevent our patients' seemingly inevitable progression toward death. Gegenwärtig differenzieren sich Soziologien der Gesundheit, des Körpers sowie des Sterbens und des Todes aus. In dieser Situation setzt der vorliegende Band die Medizinsoziologie als spezielle Soziologie in Beziehung zu allgemeinsoziologischen Theorien und nimmt darüber hinaus mit der Expertisierung der medizinischen Kultur, der Gesundheitssoziologie und der Globalisierung der Medizin neue medizinsoziologische Entwicklungen in den Blick.
