Climate warming, agricultural intensity, and urban growth are main forces triggering land degradation in advanced economies. Being active over different spatial and temporal scales, they usually reflect—at least indirectly—the impact of additional factors, such as wellbeing, demographic dynamics, and social development, on land quality. Using descriptive statistics and a multiple regression analysis, we analyzed the impact of these three processes comparatively over a decadal scale from 1960 to 2020 at the provincial level (Nuts-3 sensu Eurostat) in Italy. We enriched the investigation with a short-term forecast for 2030, based on four simplified assumptions grounded on a purely deterministic approach. Land degradation was estimated adopting the Environmental Sensitive Area Index (ESAI) measured at the spatio-temporal scale mentioned above. Computing on multiple observations at nearly 300,000 locations all over Italy, provinces were regarded as representative spatial units of the territorial pattern of land degradation. Between 1960 and 1990, the three predictors (climate, agriculture, and urbanization) explained a relatively high proportion of variance, suggesting a modest role for any other (unobserved) factor. All of these factors were found to be highly significant predictors of land degradation intensity across provinces, the most impactful being farming intensity. The highest adjusted-R2 coefficient was observed in both 1990 and 2000, and suggests that the three predictors still reflect the most powerful drivers of land degradation in Italy at those times, with a marginal role for additional (unobserved) factors. The impact of farming intensity remained high, with the role of urbanization increasing moderately, and the role of climate aridity declining weakly between 2000 and 2010. In more recent times (2010 and 2020), and in future (2030) scenarios, the adjusted R2 diminished moderately, suggesting a non-negligible importance of external (unobserved) factors and the rising role of spatial heterogeneity. The climate factor became progressively insignificant over time, while increasing the role of urbanization systematically. The impact of farming intensity remained high and significant. These results underlie a latent shift in the spatial distribution of the level of land vulnerability in Italy toward a spatially polarized model, influenced primarily by human pressure and socioeconomic drivers and less intensively shaped by biophysical factors. The legislation of new metropolitan areas in Romania follows the complicated and confusing experience of previous metropolitan areas, instilling a sense of excessive caution among both public authorities and researchers. A review of the literature demonstrates the prevalence of theoretical, methodological, and sectoral approaches when dealing with this functional frame of territorial delineation. Our research proposes an exploratory analysis of the major metropolitan areas developed around county seats, in order to understand the medium and long‐term dynamics affect‐ ing the development of these territorial structures that are contingent on the local governance. By using a methodology based on the harmonisation of statistical series according to the current administrative structure, as well as on the carto‐ graphic analysis of demographic trends between 1992 and 2021, the study demonstrates the uneven development trends of major metropolitan areas, increasing the risk of widening territorial gaps.

Metropolitan planning has been a dominant trend in spatial development for decades. In this context, Functional Urban Areas (FUAs) have emerged as a concept to illustrate the economic interdependencies between an urban core and its hinterland, being typically determined by commuting patterns or accessibility criteria. In Romania, FUAs were defined for the county capitals (40 cities) as areas where urban development projects could be financed from regional development funds. This paper analyzes the territorial dynamics in one of Romania's fastest-growing functional urban areas, Cluj-Napoca, using a comparative analysis of satellite images and selected indicators. The results demonstrate the spatial impact of economic development in the past 20 years, revealing expanding boundaries of artificial surface and housing units in FUAs. Unfortunately, the current fragmented territorial configuration is unable to manage the new functional relationships generated by real estate dynamics. Therefore, we support the need to introduce a normative territorial plan at the intercommunity level to correlate the spatial development vision between the main city and its fast-growing suburban areas. Such an instrument will not only support an efficient land-use management and enhanced living conditions, but it will also provide a framework to systematically integrate territorial investments around major cities. It shows why his parents have chosen to live in Brittany. It highlights the various qualities that make a region an attractive place to live and care for a sick child. It underlines the need for a balance between the characteristics of the environment (such as climate), a suitable healthcare offer, and the society’s sensitivity and commitment to dealing with a rare disease like cystic fibrosis.

The frontier between Brazil and Venezuela is approximately 2,199 kilometers long. It has been the scene of marked tensions and migratory flows due to the Venezuelan crisis, especially centered between the cities of Pacaraima (in Brazil) and Santa Elena de Uairén (in Venezuela). This border passes through isolated and difficult-to-access areas, with little public service infrastructure and currently has only one land crossing point, between the cities of Pacaraima and Santa Elena de Uairén. In this context, the fundamental objective of this essay is to analyze the territorial dynamics between the two countries, in the period 2016 and 2021, seeking to emphasize, from the perspective of the frontier in motion, the main socioeconomic consequences generated by mobility in this part. of the Amazon. The methodology used is based on the review of reports from Brazilian government agencies and pre-existing bibliographies of related research in Venezuela-Brazil. The question of the border strip implies the (re)cognition of the diversity and interdependence of the challenges, potentials and specificities of the two regions. The results point out important challenges in integration, health and education due to migration, as well as the similarities and differences in the internal dynamics of these two important countries in the border area, mainly in stimulating the sustainable and integrated development of the borders, valuing their cultural, environmental and economic wealth. In the strategies of regional development, an increasing importance is given to identifying the possibilities of endogenous development which, besides the exogenous impulses, contributes to an optimal development of local economies. Gorj County is one of the counties which recorded a major economic decline following the restructuring of economic activities. These counties need interventions at the strategic level, in order to identify the development alternatives, based on the capitalization of local resources. Following the analysis of the relation between the enterprise initiative and development, the way in which it has become fundamental for the development of a geographical space was clearly underlined. The analysis of this determination offers a well documented scientific support to the local and central authorities; this support regards the development of the enterprise initiative in territorial profile and, on this basis, it offers concrete solutions, based on decisional chains, which will have as a result the attenuation of the imbalance within the territorial profile. The endogenous development of the territorial systems may contribute to the sustainability of the cohesion process at local, regional and national levels.

This article develops a multiscale institutional framework to shed light on the territorial dynamics of a sector. The case of the long-term transformation of the European dairy industry shows that, within a common European regulatory system, sectoral communities are structured territorially in Germany and nationally in France. Second, a change in public policies exerts pressure not only on firms' adaptation capacities but also on sectoral communities. Third, territorial institutions appear primary in structuring sectoral dynamics when territorial players (public, private and collective) create, pool and sustainably manage productive resources, either for integration into a wider market or for developing a local means of competing. The Teles Pires River basin in Brazil's center-west has recently expanded agricultural economic development at the expense of both the Amazon rainforest and Cerrado savannah. We evaluated these changes occurring in this basin over the last 34 years. Maps were generated to determine changes in land use classifications between 1986, 1991, 1996, 2000, 2005, 2011, 2015, and 2020. The supervised classification of Landsat 5 and 8 images used the maximum likelihood algorithm. Satellite spatial data on land use downloaded from the United States Geological Survey were validated according to 1477 locations, where our research team categorized land use in the field during 2020. The growth in agricultural crops (+643%) and pasture (+250%) from 1986 to 2020 were detrimental to natural areas, such as the rainforest and savannah. The percentage increase in the agricultural areas between the evaluated years peaked around 1996 and stabilized in 2020 at 40% of the Teles Pires River basin's land area. Land use change patterns were related to political/economic events in Brazil, forest/pasture conversions until 2011, and the change from pasture to crops from 2011 to 2020. There was greater intensity in the changes in the upper Teles Pires River basin toward the south, which expanded northward over time. The implantation of multinational companies in specific points of the Brazilian territory intensified in the 1990s, causing changes in economic and social dynamics. The aim of this article was to analyze these changes in the municipality of Itatiaia (RJ), based on a survey of documents and data in public agencies for the period 1991-2019, and field research. Changes has observed with the installation of multinationals in the city, after the granting of tax exemptions to attract them, mainly in the economy and public accounts of the city, leading to the compromise of local development. The Chuj people is a Mayan people with presence in Mexico and Guatemala, their contemporary history integrates different affronts to their cultural life and constant usurpations of their rights and territories. As a survival strategy, they have needed to move and integrate into hostile and adverse contexts as a means of physical and psychological resistance. Based on the historical reconstruction and collective memory of Chuj members, this article reconstructs and analyzes political, social and cultural components imbricated in three different historical moments in the southern Mexican border, with the objective of understanding and making visible the trajectory of the Chuj people in Mexico, their stories of resistance, reconstruction and hope in the face of multiple physical and epistemological displacements. Tshopo is one of the first provinces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to be selected, in 2011, for the implementation of Reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD+) projects. Since then, this province offers the opportunity to analyze the implementation of deforestation reduction initiatives in order to understand how REDD+, developed at the international level and put on governmental agenda of the DRC, is concretely deployed on the ground through deforestation reduction projects. This paper deciphers the process of dissemination and selection of project implementation sites in the DRC in general and in Tshopo province in particular. It also describes and analyses the implementation of REDD+ activities and the resulting territorial dynamics. By mobilizing the concepts of policy diffusion and implementation, territorial dynamics, as well as the analysis of official documents, surveys by interview and direct observation in the field, we show that the diffusion of REDD+, from the national arena to the local arena in the Tshopo, was the initiative of the National REDD+ coordination (CN-REDD), financially supported by external partners. The selection of sites considered as deforestation "hot spots" constituted a crucial step of the diffusion process. In addition to the first REDD+ pilot projects, these sites receive integrated projects known as PIREDD. Our investigations and observations in the field show that in the Tshopo, activities carried out by these PIREDD+ are related to land use planning, governance, agriculture, afforestation and landscape restoration. These activities give rise to territorial dynamics characterized by changes in land use and attempts for land appropriation or reappropriation. Emerging dynamics are nevertheless subject to strong constraints: slowness and delay in the implementation of projects, short duration of projects, lack of innovation linked to the fact that projects are similar to traditional development initiatives that have not, in the past, proven their effectiveness. Constraints identified lead to dysfunctions that have the effect of reducing the enthusiasm of local actors, with the risk of compromising the success of the struggle against deforestation through REDD+ projects.

The objective of this study was to analyze the territorial dynamics linked to changes in land use in the lower Chilca river basin of the Lima region, from 1975 to 2018. The analysis was performed applying qualitative techniques such as interviews to depth, focus groups and timeline workshops with key informants, then it was contrasted with the results of the corresponding satellite image processing, in a GIS environment, according to the CORINE Land Cover model, European model of land cover. The results of the analysis of those 43 years, came to identify that the industrial and infrastructure and urbanized areas are those that have had a considerable expansion; while the coverage of areas without or with little vegetation and agricultural areas were those that have suffered the greatest reduction. This situation has generated a series of dynamics in the territory of the study area, which is manifested in evident processes of territorialization and de-territorialization of activities and socionatural processes such as the threat to the cultural heritage of Bandurria and the sunken farms, increased employment and social problems, among others. This situation is linked to processes of the growth of cities, in this case of the city of Lima.

This article summarizes the research carried out on the construction process and the features of the landscape of the Pasiegos Mountains and Valleys as a model of cultural landscape and the convenience of valuing it as a resource and "brand image" for the sustainable development of the regional territory. For centuries, this territory has played a preponderant role in livestock farming, which has relegated other economic activities and forms of productive use of the territory to a very secondary role. Since the sixteenth century there was the implementation of a semi-intensive productive system that had a great transcendence in the modification of the organization of the pasiego territory: in a short time there were notable changes in the way of life of the population, in the forms of settlement, in the productive dedication of the lands of agrarian use and, consequently, in the modeling of the rural landscape, whose characteristic features have reached our days. In addition to other heritage resources, which can help mitigate the current decline of most of the pasiego county, the most valuable cultural asset, without a doubt, is the landscape heritage, an expression of the secular pasiego way of life, provided that its value will be socially recognized and properly preserved and protected. The digitalization of the economy is a trendy phenomenon that is transforming the micro and macro-economy, evolving at a record pace and directly impacting the performance and social entrepreneurship of organizations in various sectors around the world. Organizations must therefore face vast waves of data to follow the news and facilitate territorial intelligence. This world of data is defined by the collective name of data mining, the processing of which is usually carried out by artificial intelligence technology. Entrepreneurship creates spaces of solidarity, mutual aid and coalition between social groups suffering from poverty, precariousness and even precariousness, with the aim of ensuring equitable distribution for the benefit of all. In this context, Morocco has embarked on structural changes, strengthened its modern and competitive economy, facilitated the creation of growth and encouraged entrepreneurship, and has committed itself to national commitments to territorial development. To get a broader and clearer idea of the impact of data mining and economic intelligence on territorial intelligence and social entrepreneurship, we seek to answer the following questions: How does social entrepreneurship promote territorial dynamics through artificial intelligence, particularly in the Fez-Meknes region?

An assessment of the dynamics of land cover and use in and around a Protected Area (PA) located in the Área de Preservação Ambiental da Serra da Mantiqueira (APASM; Mantiqueira Mountain Range Environmental Protection Area) and Parque Nacional do Itatiaia (PNI; Itatiaia National Park) has been developed. This PA is part of the Brazilian Mata Atlântica (MA; Atlantic Forest) biome, which is of great importance in providing water resources and in biodiversity maintenance since it is one of the largest and most populated urban centers in Brazil. In two contiguous drainage basins, with an area of 24,757.65 hectares (ha), proposals have been sought that lead to monitoring of forests pressured by anthropic actions that have as an inductor vehicle the roads built around the PA. Results obtained by Remote Sensing (RS) data show that pasture areas have grown 43% between 1985 and 2005 and forest areas have declined 20% in the same period. However, between 2005 and 2017, there was a 22% decline in pasture area and rehabilitation in forest areas by 26%. Urban spots have steadily grown by nearly 120% between 1985 and 2017. In a Geographic Information System (GIS) environment and using multiple-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) with a weighted sum to environmental attributes of roads and urban spots, it has also been verified that 85% of the study area is under high or very high pressure, which can jeopardize the maintenance of biodiversity and water resources in the region due to population increase induced by secondary roads and their paving, which moves towards the PNI limits.

In this article, is analyzed the distribution of cases COVID-19 in the territory of the province of Córdoba Argentina, between March and November 2020, in relation to the implemented policies of isolation and flexibility articulated with social practices that affect the circulation of the disease. In the province of Córdoba, the disease has followed a variable pattern in temporal terms, but with spatial similarities associated with territorial characteristics that act as conditioning factors and public policies restricting productive activities and mobility, which had an impact on the dynamics of the pandemic. The methodological design of spatial analysis was carried out from a geographic information system based on the use of free software (Qgis) that allowed working with the location of positive COVID cases, their temporality and at the same time associating that analysis with information qualitative and quantitative of the characteristics of the provincial territory (commercial areas, demographic situation, socio-economic characteristics of the population, institutions for the elderly, among others). The analysis carried out, accompanied by time-space cartography, made it possible to generate information for decision-making in the public sphere in real time, articulating geographic knowledge with epidemiology and statistics applied to health. In this article we seek to discuss elements that characterize and that go back to a reflection on the curriculum and/or curriculum strategies for Geography in countries of the Southern Cone, as well as highlighting the relationship between the curriculum and teacher training. The text is characterized by being a theoretical review associated with perceptions and debates arising from the academic trajectories of the authors of this article. We show that some curricular structures of Geography in the five countries of the Southern Cone (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay) are sometimes quite different, however, at other times, they are very close. We also emphasize that teacher training that allows knowing these different realities can be very promising and assist in solving teacher demands in schools, thus, we discuss teacher training as a point to be integrated among the countries of the Southern Cone. We conclude that thinking about curricular issues is central to contemporaneity, especially in the current context, marked by political, social and economic changes, so that the critical dimension of School Geography in the countries of the Southern Cone is not lost. In addition, we emphasize that the importance of the debate on teacher training for the issues that permeate the school curriculum, that is, it is not possible to think of a curriculum that falls short of teacher training. The aim of thisarticle is to present the historical context whereuponthe Ecological-Economic Zoning (ZEE) wasinstituted in Brazil, the legal frameworks that regulate it and its basic methodological guidelines. It is a basic and documentary research whose basic methodological guidelines started from the elaboration of the Ecological-Economic Zoning projects established by Federal Decree nº 4.297/2002. The work indicates that the ZEEProgram in almost forty years has made small progress and not all units of the federation have carried out their projects. The few advances verified, however, confirm that theZEEis an excellent territorial managementinstrument, current and relevant, been able toleverage other instruments for more sustainable territorial management.

Since the period of military dictatorship in Brazil, Amazon has become the focus through public and credit policies to privilege the interests of capital over traditional people (riverine people, fishermen, quilombolas, indigenous people), secular settled population, and other subjects (landless workers, those settled in agrarian reform projects). They are forcibly deterritorialized in this logic of integration of national and international capital in the exploration and production of commodities in this space. This work aims to portray the recent perspective of the last two decades of territorialization process of international interest, with the inflow of large capital resources, such as mining, and hydroelectric energy production. The methodology used was the case study, with interviews, documentary, and bibliography research. These enterprises, of great magnitude of socio-territorial transformations, tend to provoke a new process of deterritorialization of hundreds of families of rural workers, as in the case of those settled in agrarian reform projects, riverine people, quilombolas, and indigenous people.

The objetive of this proyect (work) is to analyze the territorial dynamics of the cruise routes in the Caribbean and its link with Cozumel. The Caribbean is the first place as tourist cruise destination for the main shipping companies, Cozumel stands out as it has positioned itself as a number one cruise destination in México. In 2019 registered 4, 569, 499 passengers according to the Integral Port Administration of state of Quintana Roo. A statistical analysis was performed in the period from 2000 to 2019 revealing the flow and cruise routes in the Caribbean, as well as the arrivals growth and the passengers in the Cozumel island. Analyzed the main cruise companies those arrive in the island and the distribution and flow of the cruise routes in 2019 were cartographically represented by geographic information systems.

This article describes and analyses the gold rushes that have affected the Sahel and the Sahara in recent years. It focuses on the forms and factors of panning, and then on the dithering of State policies: Governments are indeed hesitating between the temptation to ban these forms of artisanal mining, particularly for security reasons, and the interest to control them in order to integrate them into their rent-seeking strategies. The text then questions the territorial implications of attempts at the state organisation of this mobile activity. The analysis is based in particular on case studies provided by field research by authors in Sudan, Chad and Mauritania.

The jackal is included in the Canidae Gray, 1821 family, falling under the order Carnivora Bowdich 1821. It is an invasive species whose range has spread from the Balkan Peninsula to the North, in Romania. In the South-eastern part of Moldavia (Galați County) it arrived from the Southeast, as the first individuals came from Dobrogea. The area populated by the species continuously extended towards the North and then towards the Northwest. If 6 decades ago, when it was first spotted, the distribution area of the jackal was very small in the Southeast of the county, in 2005 it had already exceeded half of its territory, and today it is reported throughout most of the county. The Participatory budgeting is a modality of local democracy, a guarantee of better citizen participation in the co-production of local public action. Its use seems to have achieved some success in some ten Tunisian communes since 2014, to the point that the will of several state and associative actors to institutionalize it nationally. The promotion of participatory mechanisms at the local level is far from being a «new idea» in Tunisia and was once in the service of a project to legitimize the regime and control of proximity of citizens. But in its new implementation, without completely breaking with the old logics, it allows to identify some of the territorial and political dynamics that shape the process of decentralization in post-Ben Ali Tunisia. From an input by policy transfers, we show that the participatory budget is the result of a combinatorial approach. On the one hand, it is the product of the encounter between circular arenas of participation and local entrepreneurs in the voluntary sector; On the other, it is at the heart of stakes and political struggles territorially located. It is also a space for the enunciation of a new relationship with the political, it is also for several local actors, in particular municipal executives in need of legitimacy, an opportunity to build political capital and a modality for framing popular dynamics.

The beginning of the 21st century shows the outgrowth of the agrohydrobusiness in Rondonia, where the strategic use of the land and water become economic source of income in the territorial dynamic of the accumulation of financial capital. Therefore, soybean agribusiness is analyzed in the south of the state of Rondonia and the construction of (ports and waterways) that make possible the territorial fluency, at the same time articulating the importance of the Madeira River in Rondonia, it is concluded that local geography is more and more under pressure by external variables, qualifying places as global manifestations or as totality of the world, when considering the process of production of commodities in the region.

This article aims to analyze the territorial dynamics in the coastal zone of the State of Pará, the Brazilian Amazon. In this study, we will focus attention on the identification of the main factors that determined the spatial structure, the transformations in the use and occupation of the territory over time and the factors that currently promote social change in the space in question. The analysis of the dynamism of the coastal zone along the historical process induces us to understand the spatial logics underlying each period, as well as allows us to identify the determinants of the current spatial configuration and its functionality for territorial planning. The objective of this work is to understand the spatial structures, the territorial dynamics and the vectors of development of the coastal area of Para.

This paper addresses the socio-environmental problem from Critical Geography, a necessary current in a context of socio-environmental crises that express the contradictions and limits of the capitalist system in Latin America and the world. From this position, the proposal is to introduce the subject considering the territoriality that the society-nature relationship contains. Emphasis is placed on the tendency, under the logic of the market economy, for socio-environmental conflicts to be triggered by social groups with environmental interests and other territorial organizations that fight for resources, nature, territories, and democracy. These social movements in their actions contribute to the knowledge of the cases in which they become involved and promote the installation on the public agenda of topics censored, unnoticed or misrepresented by the media and government agencies. The contribution of these lines is to review concepts, reinterpret them, rehearse working methods, and organize them for didactic purposes, in order to stimulate a critical awareness of the environmental and territorial in students at the educational levels in which Geography is taught. This work aimed to carry out a survey and classification about the uses and land cover in the territory of the fishing community of the São Pedro village in Jaramataia, Alagoas, using geoprocessing as a support. For this, the LANDSAT 8 image, scene 215/067, was used, which was processed using unsupervised and supervised algorithms using the Envi 5.3 software. For the unsupervised classification, the interpolation generated 7 classes that presented several data conflicts. For the supervised, eight classes were identified and characterized: steppe wooded savannas, secondary steppe savannas, seasonal wooded steppe, temporary crop or pasture, permanent crop, exposed soil, urban area and water bodies with emphasis on artisanal fishing. With that, it was observed that the area has a high degree of anthropization and the relevant patch of native vegetation is concentrated in the most accentuated elevation levels of the difficult to access relief. This study opens the possibility for the management of the territory based on the appropriation of information from the areas of use and coverage and the generation of public policies that promote local development based on sustainable actions. In this paper we have carried out a diachronic analysis about land uses evolution in Oliva through a mixed method of research, based on photo-interpretation of aerial images (years 1956, 1991, 2015) using GIS techniques, on the one hand, and by means of a comprehensive bibliographic and field work, on the other hand. From this multimethod analysis, urban development and territorial dynamics are studied in a coastal paradigmatic municipality to explain the urbanistic development of the Valencian Mediterranean coast in the last decades. Abstract Fire scenarios are multiscale land-type planning units for a fire regime with different applications at national, regional, and local scales. The main aim of this research is to implement a methodology integrating landscape dynamics and wildfire risk from a context-specific approach, to identify current fire scenarios at a regional scale in the Spanish Central Mountain Range. These homogeneous areas are linked to different stages of a territorial dynamics model called wildfire generations and related to land use diversity and land management trends. A place-based methodology has been developed to characterize fire scenarios using Geographic Information Systems and statistical analysis, resulting in analytical and diagnostic mapping that can be used as a decision support tool for spatial planning and wildfire risk management. Its implementation has led to the delimitation of 91 discrete geographic units in the Central Mountain Range, classified according to wildfire generations and land use-land cover criteria. In conclusion, the fire scenarios concept is a potential approach to manage uncertainty by moving from the operational level of fire suppression to the strategic level of integrated fire management. This paper aims to analyse the territorial dynamics resulting from the dissymmetric relationship between two processes of dominialisation in which the Kaiowa are involved in Mato Grosso do Sul. The first is represented by the process of territorialisation established by the creation of indigenous reservations and their management by the State, as well as the simultaneous and correlated formation of rural properties and urban centres. The second process, expresses the indigenous response to the territorialisation, through the ecology of their households, engendering adaptations in the activities of its members and strategies to regain control of their expropriated lands. Under these real conditions, the Kaiowa reflect on the configuration of their territorial spaces by creating important cultural categories related to them, thus revealing that territoriality is not an immanent and/or previously defined structure, but something that is historically constructed.
