Journal of high energy physics 10(10), 197 (2022). doi:10.1007/JHEP10(2022)197, We compute the topological susceptibility of N$_{f}$ = 2 + 1 QCD with physical quark masses in the high-temperature phase, using numerical simulations of the theory discretized on a space-time lattice. More precisely we estimate the topological susceptibility for five temperatures in the range from ∼ 200 MeV up to ∼ 600 MeV, adopting the spectral projectors definition of the topological charge based on the staggered Dirac operator. This strategy turns out to be effective in reducing the large lattice artifacts which affect the standard gluonic definition, making it possible to perform a reliable continuum extrapolation. We propose to use quantum information notions to characterize thermally induced melting of nonperturbative bound states at high temperatures. We apply tensor networks to investigate this idea in static and dynamical settings within the Ising quantum field theory, where bound states are confined fermion pairs - mesons. In equilibrium, we identify the transition from an exponential decay to a power law scaling with temperature in an efficiently computable second Renyi entropy of a thermal density matrix as a signature of meson melting. Out of equilibrium, we identify as the relevant signature the transition from an oscillatory to a linear growing behavior of reflected entropy after a thermal quench. These analyses apply more broadly, which brings new ways of describing in-medium meson phenomena in quantum many-body and high-energy physics.

We theoretically explore the possibility to detect weak localization of light in a hot atomic vapor, where one usually expects the fast thermal motion of the atoms to destroy any interference in multiple scattering. To this end, we compute the coherent backscattering peak, assuming high temperature and taking into account the quantum level structure of the atomic scatterers. It is found that the decoherence due to thermal motion can be partially counterbalanced by working at large laser detuning and using small atomic cells with an elongated geometry. Under these conditions, our estimates suggest that weak localization in a hot vapor should be within reach of experimental detection., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

We evaluate the viscous damping of anisotropic flow in heavy-ion collisions for arbitrary temperature-dependent shear and bulk viscosities. We show that the damping is solely determined by effective shear and bulk viscosities, which are weighted averages over the temperature. We determine the relevant weights for nucleus-nucleus collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=5.02$ TeV and 200 GeV, corresponding to the maximum LHC and RHIC energies, by running ideal and viscous hydrodynamic simulations. The effective shear viscosity is driven by temperatures below $210$ MeV at RHIC, and below $280$ MeV at the LHC, with the largest contributions coming from the lowest temperatures, just above freeze-out. The effective bulk viscosity is driven by somewhat higher temperatures, corresponding to earlier stages of the collision. We show that at a fixed collision energy, the effective viscosity is independent of centrality and system size, to the same extent as the mean transverse momentum of outgoing hadrons. The whole mass range from the canonical QCD axion down to the ultra-light regime is allowed, with $3\le\mathcal{N}\lesssim65$. This includes the first proposal of a 'fuzzy dark matter' QCD axion with $m_a\sim10^{-22}$ eV. A novel misalignment mechanism occurs - trapped misalignment - due to the peculiar temperature dependence of the $Z_{\mathcal{N}}$ axion potential. The dark matter relic density is enhanced because the axion field undergoes two stages of oscillations: it is first trapped in the wrong minimum, which effectively delays the onset of true oscillations. Trapped misalignment is more general than the setup discussed here, and may hold whenever an extra source of Peccei-Quinn breaking appears at high temperatures. Furthermore, it will be shown that trapped misalignment can dynamically source the recently proposed kinetic misalignment mechanism. All the parameter space is within tantalizing reach of the experimental projects for the next decades. Feebly Interacting Massive Particles (FIMPs) are dark matter candidates that never thermalize in the early universe and whose production takes place via decays and/or scatterings of thermal bath particles. If FIMPs interactions with the thermal bath are renormalizable, a scenario which is known as freeze-in, production is most efficient at temperatures around the mass of the bath particles and insensitive to unknown physics at high temperatures. Working in a model-independent fashion, we consider three different production mechanisms: two-body decays, three-body decays, and binary collisions. We compute the FIMP phase space distribution and matter power spectrum, and we investigate the suppression of cosmological structures at small scales. Our results are lower bounds on the FIMP mass. Finally, we study how to relax these constraints in scenarios where FIMPs provide a sub-dominant dark matter component.

This mechanism, which we dub 'wash-in leptogenesis', does not require any CP violation in the neutrino sector and can be implemented even in the regime of strong wash-out. The key idea behind wash-in leptogenesis is to generalize standard freeze-out leptogenesis to a nonminimal cosmological background in which the chemical potentials of all particles not in chemical equilibrium at the temperature of leptogenesis are allowed to take arbitrary values. This sets the stage for building a plethora of new baryogenesis models where chemical potentials generated at high temperatures are reprocessed to generate a nonvanishing B-L asymmetry at low temperatures. Part of a collection: Theory of Hot Matter and Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collisions (THOR), This topical issue summarises some of the results realised thanks to the COST Action CA15213, which was running under the acronym THOR—short for Theory of hot matter and relativistic heavy-ion collisions—from November 2016 until April 2021.

We present Painlevé VI sigma form equations for the general Ising low and high temperature two-point correlation functions C(M, N) with M ⩽ N in the special case ν = −k where ν = sinh 2E h /k B T/sinh 2E v /k B T. More specifically four different non-linear ODEs depending explicitly on the two integers M and N emerge: these four non-linear ODEs correspond to distinguish respectively low and high temperature, together with M + N even or odd. These four different non-linear ODEs are also valid for M ⩾ N when ν = −1/k. For the low-temperature row correlation functions C(0, N) with N odd, we exhibit again for this selected ν = −k condition, a remarkable phenomenon of a Painlevé VI sigma function being the sum of four Painlevé VI sigma functions having the same Okamoto parameters. We show in this ν = −k case for T < T c and also T > T c, that C(M, N) with M ⩽ N is given as an N × N Toeplitz determinant.

We review the current status of baryogenesis with emphasis on electroweak baryogenesis and leptogenesis. The first detailed studies were carried out for SU(5) GUT models where CP-violating decays of leptoquarks generate a baryon asymmetry. These GUT models were excluded by the discovery of B+L violating sphaleron processes at high temperatures. Yet a new possibility emerged, electroweak baryogenesis. Here sphaleron processes generate a baryon asymmetry during a strongly first-order phase transition. This mechanism has been studied in many extensions of the Standard Model. However, constraints from the LHC and from low-energy precision experiments exclude most of the known models, leaving composite Higgs models of electroweak symmetry breaking as an interesting possibility. Sphaleron processes are also the basis of leptogenesis, where CP-violating decays of heavy right-handed neutrinos generate a lepton asymmetry which is partially converted to a baryon asymmetry. This mechanism is closely related to the one of GUT baryogenesis, and simple estimates based on GUT models can explain the order of magnitude of the observed baryon-to-photon ratio. In the one-flavour approximation an upper bound on the light neutrino masses has been derived which is consistent with the cosmological upper bound on the sum of neutrino masses. For quasi-degenerate right-handed neutrinos the leptogenesis temperature can be lowered from the GUT scale down to the weak scale, and CP-violating oscillations of GeV sterile neutinos can also lead to successfull leptogenesis. Significant progress has been made in developing a full field theoretical description of thermal leptogenesis, which demonstrated that interactions with gauge bosons of the thermal plasma play a crucial role. Finally, we discuss recent ideas how the seesaw mechanism and B-L breaking at the GUT scale can be probed by gravitational waves.

We investigate the edge effects on the finite temperature fermionic condensate (FC) for a massive fermionic field in a (2+1)-dimensional conical spacetime with a magnetic flux located at the cone apex. The field obeys the bag boundary condition on a circle concentric with the apex. The analysis is presented for both the fields realizing two irreducible representations of the Clifford algebra and for general case of the chemical potential. In both the regions outside and inside the circular boundary, the FC is decomposed into the boundary-free and boundary-induced contributions. They are periodic functions of the magnetic flux with the period equal to the flux quantum and even functions under the simultaneous change of the signs for the magentic flux and the chemical potential. The dependence of the FC on the magnetic flux becomes weaker with decreasing planar angle deficit. For points near the boundary, the effects of finite temperature, of planar angle deficit and of magnetic flux are weak. For a fixed distance from the boundary and at high temperatures the FC is dominated by the Minkowskian part. Not surprisingly, and in agreement with previous C ⋆ -algebraic analyses, this structure renders the use of thermal perturbation theory more than questionable.

STAR collaboration at RHIC has recently measured the polarization of $\Lambda$ hyperons in non-central heavy ion collisions in the RHIC Beam Energy Scan (BES) program. The magnitude of the polarization was found to decrease from few percents at the lowest BES energies to $\approx0.2$% at the top RHIC energy. The polarization signal has been reproduced in different hydrodynamic calculations assuming a thermodynamic spin-vorticity coupling mechanism at the Cooper-Frye hypersurface. In this work an extension of our existing calculations of the $\Lambda$ polarization in the RHIC BES program to the top RHIC and 2.76 TeV LHC energies is presented. The longitudinal component of the $\Lambda$ polarization, which is the dominant component of the polarization at the LHC energies, is discussed. Finally we show that the global polarization of $\Lambda$ originates dominantly from the relativistic analogue of the classical vorticity, whereas the quadrupole longitudinal component originates from the gradients of temperature and acceleration of the medium when the $\Lambda$s are produced out of the fluid., Comment: talk given at Quark Matter 2018 conference (Venice, Italy, 13-19 May 2018). 4 pages, 2 figures

The multiplicities of light (anti)nuclei were measured recently by the ALICE collaboration in Pb+Pb collisions at the center-of-mass collision energy $\sqrt{s_{NN}} =2.76$ TeV. Surprisingly, the hadron resonance gas model is able to perfectly describe their multiplicities under various assumptions. For instance, one can consider the (anti)nuclei with a vanishing hard-core radius (as the point-like particles) or with the hard-core radius of proton, but the fit quality is the same for these assumptions. In this paper we assume the hard-core radius of nuclei consisting of $A$ baryons or antibaryons to follow the simple law $R(A) = R_b (A)^\frac{1}{3}$, where $R_b$ is the hard-core radius of nucleon. To implement such a relation into the hadron resonance gas model we employ the induced surface tension concept and analyze the hadronic and (anti)nuclei multiplicities measured by the ALICE collaboration. The hadron resonance gas model with the induced surface tension allows us to verify different scenarios of chemical freeze-out of (anti)nuclei. It is shown that the most successful description of hadrons can be achieved at the chemical freeze-out temperature $T_h=150$ MeV, while the one for all (anti)nuclei is $T_A=168.5$ MeV. Possible explanations of this high temperature of (anti)nuclei chemical freeze-out are discussed., Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure

The equation of state (EoS) of hot and dense matter is a fundamental input to describe static and dynamical properties of neutron stars, core-collapse supernovae and binary compact-star mergers. We review the current status of the EoS for compact objects, that have been studied with both ab-initio many-body approaches and phenomenological models. We limit ourselves to the description of EoSs with purely nucleonic degrees of freedom, disregarding the appearance of strange baryonic matter and/or quark matter. We compare the theoretical predictions with different data coming from both nuclear physics experiments and astrophysical observations. Combining the complementary information thus obtained greatly enriches our insights into the dense nuclear matter properties. Current challenges in the description of the EoS are also discussed, mainly focusing on the model dependence of the constraints extracted from either experimental or observational data (specifically, concerning the symmetry energy), the lack of a consistent and rigorous many-body treatment at zero and finite temperature of the matter encountered in compact stars (e.g. problem of cluster formation and extension of the EoS to very high temperatures), the role of nucleonic three-body forces, and the dependence of the direct URCA processes on the EoS.

International audience; Measurements of jets and particle correlations in nucleus-nucleus collisions are intended to probe QCD interactions in the high temperature phase, where matter is understood to behave as a quark-gluon plasma. Two probes are reviewed: jets which are used to study the energy loss of hard-scattered partons in this medium and particle correlations which are used to understand collective effects of the bulk matter. Whereas collisions of lighter systems, namely proton-ion and proton-proton, initially served primarily as control experiments, certain (but not all) effects first observed in nucleus-nucleus collisions have proven to be pervasive in these systems. Comparative measurements in these three systems have broadened our understanding of many-body QCD phenomena, and raised new questions. This talk reviewed these recent developments.

We device an efficient book-keeping of excluded energy-sign and scattering-channel combinations for the loop four-momenta associated with massive quasi-particles, circulating in (connected) bubble diagrams subject to vertex constraints inherited from the thermal ground state. The according radiative corrections modify the free thermal-quasiparticle pressure at one loop. Increasing the loop order in two-particle irreducible (2PI) bubble diagrams, we exemplarily demonstrate a suppressing effect of the vertex constraints on the number of valid combinations. This increasingly strong suppression gave rise to the conjecture in hep-th/0609033 that the loop expansion would terminate at a finite order. Albeit the low-temperature dependence of the 2PI 3-loop diagram complies with this behaviour, a thorough analysis of the high-temperature situation reveals that the leading power in temperature is thirteen such that this diagram dominates all lower loop orders for sufficiently high temperatures. An all-loop-order resummation of 2PI diagrams with dihedral symmetry is thus required, defining an extremely well-bounded analytical continuation of the low-temperatures result., Comment: 39 pages, 22 figures, 8 tables

International audience; Substantial experimental and theoretical efforts worldwide are devoted to explore the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter. At LHC and top RHIC energies, QCD matter is studied at very high temperatures and nearly vanishing net-baryon densities. There is evidence that a Quark-Gluon-Plasma (QGP) was created at experiments at RHIC and LHC. The transition from the QGP back to the hadron gas is found to be a smooth cross over. For larger net-baryon densities and lower temperatures, it is expected that the QCD phase diagram exhibits a rich structure, such as a first-order phase transition between hadronic and partonic matter which terminates in a critical point, or exotic phases like quarkyonic matter. The discovery of these landmarks would be a breakthrough in our understanding of the strong interaction and is therefore in the focus of various high-energy heavy-ion research programs. The Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment at FAIR will play a unique role in the exploration of the QCD phase diagram in the region of high net-baryon densities, because it is designed to run at unprecedented interaction rates. High-rate operation is the key prerequisite for high-precision measurements of multi-differential observables and of rare diagnostic probes which are sensitive to the dense phase of the nuclear fireball. The goal of the CBM experiment at SIS100 ( $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 2.7--4.9 GeV) is to discover fundamental properties of QCD matter: the phase structure at large baryon-chemical potentials ( $\mu_B > 500$ MeV), effects of chiral symmetry, and the equation of state at high density as it is expected to occur in the core of neutron stars. In this article, we review the motivation for and the physics programme of CBM, including activities before the start of data taking in 2024, in the context of the worldwide efforts to explore high-density QCD matter.

We use a holographic theory to model and study the competition of four phases: an antiferromagnetic phase, a superconducting phase, a metallic phase and a striped phase, using as control parameters temperature and a doping-like parameter. We analyse the various instabilities and determine the possible phases. Perturbation theory for non-abelian gauge theories at finite temperature is plagued by infrared divergences which are caused by magnetic soft modes ~g^2T, corresponding to gluon fields of a 3d Yang-Mills theory. While the divergences can be regulated by a dynamically generated magnetic mass on that scale, the gauge coupling drops out of the effective expansion parameter requiring summation of all loop orders for the calculation of observables. Some gauge invariant possibilities to implement such infrared-safe resummations are reviewed. We use a scheme based on the non-linear sigma model to estimate some of the contributions ~g^6 of the soft magnetic modes to the QCD pressure through two loops. We analyze baryon number, strangeness and electric charge fluctuations as well as their correlations in QCD at high temperature. We present results obtained from lattice calculations performed with an improved staggered fermion action (p4-action) at two values of the lattice cut-off with almost physical up and down quark masses and a physical value for the strange quark mass. We compare these results, with an ideal quark gas at high temperature and a hadron resonance gas model at low temperature. We find that fluctuations and correlations are well described by the former already for temperatures about 1.5 times the transition temperature. At low temperature qualitative features of the lattice results are quite well described by a hadron resonance gas model. Higher order cumulants, which become increasingly sensitive to the light pions, however show deviations from a resonance gas in the vicinity of the transition temperature., 11 pages, 8 figures; revised and published version

The free energy density, or pressure, of QCD has at high temperatures an expansion in the coupling constant g, known so far up to order g^5. We compute here the last contribution which can be determined perturbatively, g^6 ln(1/g), by summing together results for the 4-loop vacuum energy densities of two different three-dimensional effective field theories. We also demonstrate that the inclusion of the new perturbative g^6 ln(1/g) terms, once they are summed together with the so far unknown perturbative and non-perturbative g^6 terms, could potentially extend the applicability of the coupling constant series down to surprisingly low temperatures., Comment: 18 pages. Heavy quark potentials are investigated at high temperatures. The temperature range covered by the analysis extends from $T$ values just below the deconfinement temperature up to about $4 T_c$ in the deconfined phase. We simulated the pure gauge sector of QCD on lattices with temporal extents of 4, 6 and 8 with spatial volumes of $32^3$. On the smallest lattice a tree level improved action was employed while in the other two cases the standard Wilson action was used. Below $T_c$ we find a temperature dependent logarithmic term contributing to the confinement potential and observe a string tension which decreases with rising temperature but retains a finite value at the deconfinement transition. Above $T_c$ the potential is Debye-screened, however simple perturbative predictions do not apply., 20 pages, 9 figures

51 pp. (1995)., The gauge-boson sector of perturbative scalar electrodynamics is investigated in detail as a testing ground for resummation methods in hot gauge theories. It also serves as a simple non-trivial reference system for the non-Abelian gluon plasma. The complete next-to-leading order contributions to the polarization tensor are obtained within the resummation scheme of Braaten and Pisarski. The simpler scheme proposed recently by Arnold and Espinosa is shown to apply to static quantities only, whereas Braaten-Pisarski resummation turns out to need modification for collective phenomena close to the light-cone. Finally, a recently proposed resummation of quasi-particle damping contributions is assessed critically.

We study the properties of charmonium states at finite temperature in quenched QCD on isotropic lattices. We measured charmonium correlators using non-perturbatively $\cO(a)$ improved clover fermions on fine ($a=0.01$ fm) lattices with a relatively large size of $128^{3}\times 96$, $128^3\times48$, $128^3\times32$ and $128^3\times24$ at $0.73~T_c$, $1.46~T_c$, $2.20~T_c$ and $2.93~T_c$, respectively. Our analysis suggests that $\Jpsi$ is melted already at $1.46~T_c$ and $\eta_c$ starts to dissolve at $1.46~T_c$ and does not exist at higher temperatures. Physical review letters (2021)., We propose a novel class of composite models that feature both a technicolor and a composite Higgs vacuum limit, resulting in an asymmetric dark matter candidate. These Techni-Composite Higgs models are based on an extended left-right electroweak symmetry with a pseudo-Nambu Goldstone boson Higgs and stable dark matter candidates charged under a global $\mathrm{U}(1)_X$ symmetry, connected to the baryon asymmetry at high temperatures via the $SU(2)_{\rm R}$ sphaleron.
