Abstract

We present an updated data-analysis comparison of the most recent observations of the Cosmic Microwave Background temperature anisotropies and polarization angular power spectra released by four different experiments: the Planck satellite on one side, and the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACTPol) and the South Pole Telescope (SPT-3G), combined with the WMAP satellite 9-years observation data in order to be "Planck-independent" on the other side. We investigate in a systematic way 8 extended cosmological models that differ from the baseline $\Lambda$CDM case by the inclusion of many different combinations of additional degrees of freedom. Our analysis provides several hints for anomalies in the CMB angular power spectra in tension with the standard cosmological model. This indicates that either significant unaccounted-for systematics in the data are producing biased results or that $\Lambda$CDM is an incorrect/incomplete description of Nature. We conclude that only future independent high-precision CMB temperature and polarization measurements could provide a definitive answer.

Abstract

Planck Collaboration: et al., Analysis of the Planck 2018 data set indicates that the statistical properties of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature anisotropies are in excellent agreement with previous studies using the 2013 and 2015 data releases. In particular, they are consistent with the Gaussian predictions of the ΛCDM cosmological model, yet also confirm the presence of several so-called “anomalies” on large angular scales. The novelty of the current study, however, lies in being a first attempt at a comprehensive analysis of the statistics of the polarization signal over all angular scales, using either maps of the Stokes parameters, Q and U, or the E-mode signal derived from these using a new methodology (which we describe in an appendix). Although remarkable progress has been made in reducing the systematic effects that contaminated the 2015 polarization maps on large angular scales, it is still the case that residual systematics (and our ability to simulate them) can limit some tests of non-Gaussianity and isotropy. However, a detailed set of null tests applied to the maps indicates that these issues do not dominate the analysis on intermediate and large angular scales (i.e., ℓ ≲ 400). In this regime, no unambiguous detections of cosmological non-Gaussianity, or of anomalies corresponding to those seen in temperature, are claimed. Abstract

We study features in the bispectrum of the primordial curvature perturbation correlated with the reconstructed primordial power spectrum from the observed cosmic microwave background temperature data. We first show how the bispectrum can be completely specified in terms of the power spectrum and its first two derivatives, valid for any configuration of interest. Then using a model-independent reconstruction of the primordial power spectrum from the Planck angular power spectrum of temperature anisotropies, we compute the bispectrum in different triangular configurations. We find that in the squeezed limit at k ~ 0.06/Mpc and k ~ 0.014/Mpc there are marginal 2sigma deviations from the standard featureless bispectrum, which meanwhile is consistent with the reconstructed bispectrum in the equilateral configuration., Comment: (v1) 6 pages, 4 figures; (v2) improved results but conclusions not changed, to appear in Physics Letters B

Abstract

Recent years have brought strong observational evidences for the standard LCDM cosmological model. Cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy and large scale structure (LSS) probes do not favour any extensions of the standard model. Nevertheless, in this framework, the preferred cosmological parameters may differ from probe to probe, from experiment to experiment. This is the well known case of the tension between CMB and Sunyaev Zel'dovich (SZ) galaxy clusters (GC) from Planck. In 2013, the Planck team has shown that the preferred matter content ({\Omega}M) and density fluctuation power spectrum amplitude ({\sigma}8), the two main cosmological parameters probed by the galaxy cluster number count, are different in the CMB analyses and in the SZ cluster analyses at more than 2 sigmas (a result confirmed in subsequent analyses). We present the results of our new analysis using more recent measurements of the CMB, SZ clusters and SZ power spectrum of 2016 and show that the tension on ({\Omega}M,{\sigma}8) is mostly releaved. The lower value of the reionisation optical depth and thus of {\sigma}8 in the recent Planck studies is the main reason. We also show that basic extensions of the standard model (massive neutrinos or non-lambda dark energy) do not help improving the agreement between the probes. In order to fully reconcile SZ clusters with CMB best model, the mass of the galaxy clusters derived from hydrostatic equilibrium should be 40% lower than the true mass. While current numerical simulations and weak lensing measurements agree for a mass bias of 20%, investigations are still going on to explain such disagreement on the mass bias. Abstract

Planck Collaboration: et al., We report on the implications for cosmic inflation of the 2018 release of the Planck cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy measurements. The results are fully consistent with those reported using the data from the two previous Planck cosmological releases, but have smaller uncertainties thanks to improvements in the characterization of polarization at low and high multipoles. Planck temperature, polarization, and lensing data determine the spectral index of scalar perturbations to be ns = 0.9649 ± 0.0042 at 68% CL. We find no evidence for a scale dependence of ns, either as a running or as a running of the running. The Universe is found to be consistent with spatial flatness with a precision of 0.4% at 95% CL by combining Planck with a compilation of baryon acoustic oscillation data. The Planck 95% CL upper limit on the tensor-to-scalar ratio, r0.002 < 0.10, is further tightened by combining with the BICEP2/Keck Array BK15 data to obtain r0.002 < 0.056. In the framework of standard single-field inflationary models with Einstein gravity, these results imply that: (a) the predictions of slow-roll models with a concave potential, V″(ϕ) < 0, are increasingly favoured by the data; and (b) based on two different methods for reconstructing the inflaton potential, we find no evidence for dynamics beyond slow roll. Three different methods for the non-parametric reconstruction of the primordial power spectrum consistently confirm a pure power law in the range of comoving scales 0.005 Mpc−1 ≲ k ≲ 0.2 Mpc−1. A complementary analysis also finds no evidence for theoretically motivated parameterized features in the Planck power spectra. For the case of oscillatory features that are logarithmic or linear in k, this result is further strengthened by a new combined analysis including the Planck bispectrum data. The new Planck polarization data provide a stringent test of the adiabaticity of the initial conditions for the cosmological fluctuations. In correlated, mixed adiabatic and isocurvature models, the non-adiabatic contribution to the observed CMB temperature variance is constrained to 1.3%, 1.7%, and 1.7% at 95% CL for cold dark matter, neutrino density, and neutrino velocity, respectively. Planck power spectra plus lensing set constraints on the amplitude of compensated cold dark matter-baryon isocurvature perturbations that are consistent with current complementary measurements. The polarization data also provide improved constraints on inflationary models that predict a small statistically anisotropic quadupolar modulation of the primordial fluctuations. However, the polarization data do not support physical models for a scale-dependent dipolar modulation. Abstract

The cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature anisotropies exhibit a large-scale dipolar power asymmetry. To determine whether this is due to a real, physical modulation or is simply a large statistical fluctuation requires the measurement of new modes. Here we forecast how well CMB polarization data from \Planck\ and future experiments will be able to confirm or constrain physical models for modulation. Fitting several such models to the \Planck\ temperature data allows us to provide predictions for polarization asymmetry. While for some models and parameters \Planck\ polarization will decrease error bars on the modulation amplitude by only a small percentage, we show, importantly, that cosmic-variance-limited (and in some cases even \Planck) polarization data can decrease the errors by considerably better than the expectation of $\sqrt 2$ based on simple $\ell$-space arguments. We project that if the primordial fluctuations are truly modulated (with parameters as indicated by \Planck\ temperature data) then \Planck\ will be able to make a 2$\sigma$ detection of the modulation model with 20--75\% probability, increasing to 45--99\% when cosmic-variance-limited polarization is considered. We stress that these results are quite model dependent. International audience; In order to draw scientific conclusions from observations of cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization, it is necessary to separate the contributions of the E and B components of the data. For data with incomplete sky coverage, there are ambiguous modes, which can be sourced by either E or B signals. Techniques exist for producing “pure” E and B maps, which are guaranteed to be free of cross-contamination, although the standard method, which involves constructing an eigenbasis, has a high computational cost. We show that such pure maps can be thought of as resulting from the application of a Wiener filter to the data. This perspective leads to far more efficient methods of producing pure maps. Moreover, by expressing the idea of purification in the general framework of Wiener filtering (i.e., maximization of a posterior probability), it leads to a variety of generalizations of the notion of pure E and B maps, e.g., accounting for noise or other contaminants in the data as well as correlations with temperature anisotropy.

Abstract

Despite the wealth of $Planck$ results, there are difficulties in disentangling the primordial non-Gaussianity of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) from the secondary and the foreground non-Gaussianity (NG). For each of these forms of NG the lack of complete data introduces model-dependencies. Aiming at detecting the NGs of the CMB temperature anisotropy $\delta T$, while paying particular attention to a model-independent quantification of NGs, our analysis is based upon statistical and morphological univariate descriptors, respectively: the probability density function $P(\delta T)$, related to ${\mathrm v}_{0}$, the first Minkowski Functional (MF), and the two other MFs, ${\mathrm v}_{1}$ and ${\mathrm v}_{2}$. From their analytical Gaussian predictions we build the discrepancy functions $\Delta_{k}$ ($k=P,0,1,2$) which are applied to an ensemble of $10^{5}$ CMB realization maps of the $\Lambda$CDM model and to the $Planck$ CMB maps. In our analysis we use general Hermite expansions of the $\Delta_{k}$ up to the $12^{th}$ order, where the coefficients are explicitly given in terms of cumulants. Assuming hierarchical ordering of the cumulants, we obtain the perturbative expansions generalizing the $2^{nd}$ order expansions of Matsubara to arbitrary order in the standard deviation $\sigma_0$ for $P(\delta T)$ and ${\mathrm v}_0$, where the perturbative expansion coefficients are explicitly given in terms of complete Bell polynomials. The comparison of the Hermite expansions and the perturbative expansions is performed for the $\Lambda$CDM map sample and the $Planck$ data.
