The taxa included in Subtribus Sphodrina (Tribus Sphodrini) were very rarely mentioned in articles or faunal catalogues published for the Romanian fauna, some of them being recorded in underground environments (natural or artificial cavities). Other taxa were erroneously recorded for the Romanian fauna (Laemostenus capitaus, L. janthinus coeruleus), and others were omitted to be cited for the Romanian fauna (Taphoxenus gigas) in recent faunal catalogues. The presence of other species, which must be confirmed for the Romanian fauna (Laemostenus janthinus), or recorded in new geographical regions (L. janthinus, L. euxinicus) is discussed. In this article we made a brief analysis of the Romanian Sphodrinae fauna in a zoogeographical context, trying to highlight the systematic, faunal and protection problems raised by this interesting taxonomic group.

The butterfly fauna of the Hazratisho Ridge includes 105 species and subspecies from 5 families. The faunal composition in general and taxonomic status of some recorded species is discussed.

The taxonomy and distribution of dragonflies of the genus Heliogomphus from the Western Ghats of southern India are discussed. A morphological study of fresh male specimens from the field, as well as holotypes and lectotypes from repositories was undertaken. Contradicting statements in scientific literature, we found that the markings on the occiput and thorax are not dependable features in distinguishing sympatric Heliogomphus promelas (Selys, 1873) and H. kalarensis Fraser, 1934. The structure of the epiprocts and the male genitalia were key features for differentiating them. Heliogomphus pruinans, Fraser, 1922 is removed from the synonymy of H. promelas and is synonymized with H. kalarensis instead based on the analysis of the structure of its epiproct. In accordance with the provisions of ICZN Article 23.9.1.2, in suppression of the unused senior synonym, the taxon name H. kalarensis is retained as a nomen protectum. Heliogomphus unifasciatus is treated as nomen nudum. Taxonomic notes and updated distribution summaries of the two species from the Western Ghats with an identification key to the males are provided. Heliogomphus kalarensis is redescribed from fresh field-collected specimens, including details of the male genitalia and anal appendages. Fieldwork in the Western Ghats revealed that H. kalarensis is the most common of the two Heliogomphus species in Kerala state. The ant subgenus Orthonotomyrmex Ashmead, 1906 of the genus Camponotus is reported for the first time from Nepal. Five species from this subgenus are recognized as new records for Nepal, namely Camponotus mutilarius Emery, 1893, C. opaciventris Mayr, 1879, C. sericeus (Fabricius, 1798), C. lasiselene Wang & Wu, 1994 and C. selene (Emery, 1889). An identification key for all known Nepalese species of Camponotus (Orthonotomyrmex) based on the worker caste is presented.

Identified and reviewed taxonomically are the hyperparasitoids (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea) in Argentina and Paraguay associated with Hypogeococcus spp. (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae), mealybugs that feed on various native cacti (Cactaceae) as well as some Amaranthaceae and Portulacaceae. The following genera and species were collected and reared in the course of surveys conducted in Argentina during 2010–2019 and in Paraguay during 2016–2019: Chartocerus argentinus (Brèthes) stat. rev. [reinstated as a valid species from the previous synonymy with Chartocerus niger (Ashmead)] and Chartocerus axillaris De Santis from Argentina (Signiphoridae), an undescribed Cheiloneurus sp. from Paraguay and Prochiloneurus argentinensis (De Santis) from Argentina (Encyrtidae). These are secondary parasitoids via Encyrtidae primary parasitoids of Hypogeococcus sp., candidate biological control agents against a Hypogeococcus sp. (commonly called the Harrisia cactus mealybug) that is devastating the native columnar cacti in Puerto Rico. The previously unknown male of Chartocerus argentinus is described, and a lectotype is designated for Signiphora argentina Brèthes. Taxonomic notes are provided for Ablerus platensis (Brèthes) (Hymenoptera: Azotidae), for which a lectotype is designated (for Dimacrocerus platensis Brèthes); it is newly recorded from Paraguay. Hyperparasitoids can be detrimental to biological control programs, but their impact has often been unknown or underestimated. Taxonomic identification of the hyperparasitoids is the first step in assessing the potential negative impact to the natural control of Hypogeococcus spp. in South America.

This volume, comprising two parts, continues the review of the Ants of Western Australia which commenced with 'A Guide to the Ants of South-western Australia' by the author (2009). Here, however, coverage of the entire state is attempted. All named species recorded for the state in the major Australian repositories are included, as well as unnamed species listed on the World Wide Web. The author has also inspected accessional and type specimens in the Australian National Insect Collection (ANIC), Canberra, ACT, and accessional material in the Tropical Ecosystems Research Centre (TERC), Darwin, NT, in a further effort at comprehensiveness. In this work, the author recognises 11 subfamilies, 76 confirmed genera and at least 832 species (including 200 to which a name cannot be given). Three species (Rhytidoponera castanea Crawley, R. quadriceps Clark, and Melophorus marius Forel), are resurrected from synonymy, three nominal subspecies (Camponotus claripes inverallensis Forel, Crematogaster laeviceps clarior Forel and Crematogaster queenslandica bipartita Forel) are raised to species status and 32 taxa (21 species and 11 subspecies) are reduced to synonymy as follows: Rhytidoponera rufonigra Clark under R. punctata (F. Smith); Rhytidoponera carinata Clark under R. castanea Crawley; Camponotus walkeri Forel under C. claripes Mayr; Camponotus churchetti McArthur under C. inverallensis Forel; Camponotus discors angustinodus Emery under C. consectator (F. Camponotus scratius nuntius Forel becomes a species inquirenda. Taxonomic keys to the ant subfamilies, genera and species found in Western Australia are provided, as are several new interpretations of sub-generic categories including those for the large genera Camponotus, Meranoplus and Stigmacros. Living specimens of three colour forms (pink, white and yellowish white) of Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn. were observed in different natural habitats of Bangladesh and collected. Fresh specimens were studied in the field as well as in the laboratory. After detailed study it was concluded that the three colour forms available in Bangladesh belong to the same species, Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn. However, the yellowish white colour form, having many stamens petaloid, is considered as a new cultivar Nelumbo nucifera 'Gomoti' and reported here as the first lotus cultivar from Bangladesh. A chicklist of the family Anthicidae existing in Egypt is given, based on material kept in the main reference insect collections in Egypt and records in the literature. The list includes 74 species and 16 subspecies belonging to 17 genera under four subfamilies (Anthicinae, Notoxinae, Tomoderinae and Macratriinae). Updated scientific names and synonyms are presented together with Taxonomic notes. Certain subgenera were promoted to genus rank, consequently changing in scientific names. Epiophlebiais the only known taxon of Odonata that is neither part of the damselflies (Zygoptera) nor dragonflies (Anisoptera). Previously, two species ofEpiophlebiawere recognized, restricted to areas in Japan (Epiophlebia superstes) and the Himalayas (Epiophlebia laidlawi). Recently, the group gained attention with the description of new species from China –Epiophlebia sinensisandEpiophlebia diana –while a subsequent genetic study suggested only one species ofEpiophlebia. To clarify these conflicting hypotheses this study focused on the under-recordedEpiophlebia laidlawi.This study elucidated the morphology of this species in comparison toEpiophlebia superstes, representing the first comparative study ofEpiophlebiaspecies. Furthermore, it presents notes on the taxonomic conditions of this group. With this study, a first step is made to resolve the confusion regarding the taxonomic status of the describedEpiophlebiaspecies. A number of anatomical characters – for example the different shape of the vertex of the head, the distinct colour patterns of the head, thorax and the abdomen or the differences in the shape of the hamulus anterior and posterior in the secondary male genitalia – confirmed the species status ofE. laidlawiand underlined its distinctness fromE. superstes. During a recent revision of the genus Alpinia Roxb. of the family Zingiberaceae in Sri Lanka , we came to notice a set of ambiguous morphological descriptions on Alpinia fax Burtt and Smith. This is particularly pertaining to few earlier collections and especially to the description of the species discovered from India recently. In this short note, we address ambiguity of these morphological characteristics which do not add up with the accepted revision on the species, also giving reference to the currently accepted description, our field collections and the Indian species. Engelhardia , a genus of Juglandaceae (the walnut family), is endemic to tropical and subtropical Asia. The rich Cenozoic fossil records and distinctive morphological characters of the living plants have been used to explore the evolutionary history and geographic distribution of Juglandaceae. However, the taxonomy of this genus has been suffered from a lack of in-depth investigation and good specimens across its distribution ranges. Species delimitation of Engelhardia was defined with seven species in 2020, but detailed information on the circumscription of the species still remains poorly understood. In this study, two new species are described from Sulawesi and Borneo, Engelhardia anminiana and E. borneensis . We also revised and reconstructed the phylogeny within Engelhardia using morphological, molecular (plastid and ribosomal), and distribution data. We sampled 787 individuals in 80 populations, and all the samples were genotyped using plastid regions, trn S- trn G, rps 16, trn L- trn F, psb A- trn H, and rpl 32- trn L; one ribosomal region, nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (nrITS). The all datasets were used to reconstruct the phylogenetic relationships. Then, the molecular analyses were combined for 738 sheets of specimens with 15 morphological characteristics to further explore the morphological clusters of Engelhardia . Cluster analysis using morphological data confirmed the delimitation of nine Engelhardia species. Also, phylogenetic analysis based on molecular data (i.e., plastid and ribosomal) supported the monophyly of Engelhardia and generated phylogenetic trees that included E. fenzelii , E. roxburghiana , E. borneensis , E. hainanensis , E. anminiana , E. serrata , E. villosa , E. apoensis and the varieties of E. spicata (i.e., E. spicata var. spicata , E. spicata var. rigida , E. spicata var. aceriflora , and E. spicata var. colebrookeana ). Recent studies of extra-Amazonian species of Copaifera revealed several nomenclatural problems. We choose lectotypes for C. cearensis Huber ex Ducke and C. cearensis var. arenicola Ducke from amongst the available syntypes, and propose the lectotypification of C. langsdorffii Desf. with its original plate. Comments are made about the correct spelling of the specific epithet of C. langsdorffii and the typifications of C. elliptica Mart. and C. luetzelburgii Harms are clarified. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
