The purpose of this research was to develop a taxonomy of competencies common across different jobs, occupations, and organizations. To achieve this objective, a definition of competency was constructed and a systematic literature review was conducted, selecting studies that: a) included models with general competencies conceptually close to such definition, b) belonged to the Work and Organizational, and Employability areas, and c) were supported by one or more sources or empirical data. Through this procedure, 23 lists of general competencies were identified, whose content analysis, with a high degree of agreement between two independent reviewers, led to a taxonomy of 36 competencies containing the elements common to all of them. This taxonomy of general competencies is a resource intended to assist in the development of new models and serve as a reference for future competency modeling processes related to the work context. Introduction. Radiolarians are an important group of marine planktonic protists. The polycystines (Phylum Radiozoa, Class Polycystina) are a group of radiolarians whose skeletons are made of opal (amorphous silica) and form the basis for their taxonomic classification. There are few recent studies of radiolarians in Costa Rica. Objective. This research seeks to create the first taxonomic guide of radiolarians present in Holocene sediments (from 11 000 years ago to the present) of the Costa Rican Pacific seabed. Methods. Between late 2018 and early 2019, two oceanic expeditions: Rock Hits and Costa Rica Deep-Sea Connections, respectively, collected 13 sediment cores from the Costa Rican Pacific seabed. Using a modified methodology created for these investigation, 64 samples were obtained from which radiolarian remains were extracted for taxonomic analysis. Obtained radiolarians were mounted for taxonomic analysis using optical and scanning electron (SEM) microscopy. Results. A total of 119 species of Polycystina were identified, distributed among 15 families belonging to the orders Collodaria (one family and eight species), Spumellaria (seven families and 62 species), and Nassellaria (seven families and 49 species). Conclusion. This study identifies several taxa (119) like those reported in studies conducted near the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, but less than half of those reported from the Eastern Equatorial Pacific (EEP). A new species of Euphorbia that has been historically treated as E. dentata in Argentina is described and illustrated. The new species, Euphorbia subilsiae, is morphologically similar to E. pentadactyla, the only other native species of the “Euphorbia dentata alliance” in Argentina, but it has bifid styles and less brightly colored umbel bracts. Euphorbia davidii, long thought to be native in Córdoba Province, should be considered as recently introduced in Argentina. It is now a common weed across Buenos Aires Province but is apparently less common further north in the country. The taxonomic position of annual species of Oxalis section Alpinae, morphologically related to O. laxa, was controversial in recent publications of the genus. Several taxa have been treated as synonyms of O. laxa or, eventually, considered as accepted at the specific or infraspecific level. In this contribution, we evaluated the circumscription of O. micrantha and other names within O. laxa, while concluding that O. campanensis, O. cumingii, and O. rigida are clearly distinctive species based on morphological characters, different from the former; we also consider two varieties within O. laxa. Keys to distinguish the recognized taxa are presented, together with photos of the species. A review of the nomenclatural type specimens of Pluteus basionyms is presented as part of the monographic study of the genus in Mexico carried out by the author. In this paper, 19 type materials are reviewed, of the 33 taxa cited from Mexico. Hieronymiella peruviana (Amaryllidaceae, Amaryllidoideae, Eustephieae), a new species from the Department of Moquegua in southern Peru, is described and illustrated. This species is distinguished by having winged staminal filaments with crisscrossed sickle-shaped appendages, grows on dry slopes in semi-arid areas with pumice soils near the Huaynaputina volcano. The genus Geocoris Fallén, 1814 is recorded for the first time from Peru. Five new species are described: G. castanoae, G. flatus, G. genuinus, G. infrequens, and G. navus. Geocoris sobrinus (Blanchard, 1852) is recorded for the first time from Peru. Geocoris barrosi Porter, 1917 is considered a synonym of the nominal species Geocoris sobrinus (Blanchard, 1852). To date, in Mexico, records are known only for the family Cryptognathidae of Cryptognathus sp. from Puebla, as well as for Cryptognathus sp. and Cryptognathus lagena from Cozumel, Quintana Roo. In recent projects carried out in Estado de México and Hidalgo, two species of the genus Favognathus were recorded: F. barrasi and F. ochraceus respectively; information that expands the known distribution range of these species both in Mexico and worldwide. The first is only known from the Galapagos Islands and the second is from the United States of America. Both species are placed as related species (aff.) because they show variations with what was originally described. Furthermore, this work highlights the relevance of research focused on understanding the biological diversity of ecosystems, especially the soil and its fauna, since it plays a central role in various ecological functions of the soil. As a tribute to Dr. Gabriela Castaño Meneses, who has dedicated a large part of her life to the study of arthropods, particularly focused on microarthropods and ants, we present a biographical sketch of her academic and professional career. Throughout her career, she has distinguished herself as a researcher and scholar in entomology, publishing more than 90 articles, 21 book chapters, and teaching more than 81 courses, among others. Her work has been characterized by a wide range of approaches, covering topics such as ecology and taxonomy of different groups of arthropods, including springtails, mites and ants, and covering the different gradients of a wide range of habitats. The odonates community from Cuetzalan and surroundings was studied through direct collections of adults in the years 2007 and 2009. Seventy-two species included in 37 genera and 11 families of the suborders Zygoptera and Anisoptera, were found, of which 19 species are new records for Puebla State. The collections efficiency was evaluated with three non-parametric estimators, reaching percentages of 82-98%. Phylogenetic diversity was calculated and compared to other two areas with cloud forest cover in the Northern Mountain Range in Puebla state and Hidalgo state, resulting more diverse that of Cuetzalan. En el presente trabajo se realiza una revisión taxonómica de los géneros de Theraphosinae presentes en Chile, además de una clave que facilite su reconocimiento. Adicionalmente, se ofrece para cada uno de ellos una descripción general y una diagnosis actualizada, además de tratar algunos aspectos sobre el estado de conservación, historia natural y distribución geográfica de algunas de sus especies.

Aquí, una nueva especie del grupo de especies Dichotomius agenor (Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae) de la planicie del Caribe Colombiano es descrita. La nueva especie es más similar a Dichotomius (Seleno-copris) tristis que a cualquiera de las otras especies en el grupo debido a que ambos tienen la carina cefálica del macho con el ápice del tubérculo medio redondeado y el de los laterales transversalmente alargado; el proceso ventral clipeal apicalmente truncado; el pronoto con un fuerte declive anterior; el hipómero con una fila de puntos grandes y setígeros en el margen externo; el metasterno con puntos setígeros en el área anterior y los márgenes laterales, mientras que en las áreas media y posterior, incluyendo el área postero-medial alrededor del ángulo posterior interno de las mesocoxas, únicamente con puntos muy pequeños y dispersos; y las metacoxas con una fila de puntos pequeños y setígeros a lo largo del margen posterior. Sin embargo, las dos especies pueden distinguirse porque la nueva especie presenta en el prosterno puntos pequeños, dispersos y escasos, cada uno con una seta larga, roja amarillenta; el borde externo de los parameros ligeramente sinuoso; y la lamela copulatriz con la emarginación dorsal relativamente superficial y el brazo ventral derecho oblicuo hacia el exterior con respecto al eje horizontal de la lamela, mientras que el izquierdo es recto. Excluyendo la nueva especie descrita aquí, otras seis especies del grupo están presentes en Colombia, y sus distribuciones también son actualizadas.

In this guide we present taxonomic keys for the 12 subfamilies and 117 genera of ants known to occur in Brazil, along with an illustrated glossary of technical terms. The identification keys presented here are accompanied by high-resolution photographs of representative specimens for each taxon covered, including details that aid in the understanding of complex characters. Additionally, we provide comparative information for each genus, including diagnostic morphological traits, predominant habitat occurrence, nesting and foraging strata, collection frequency, and reproductive strategy. We also provide a synopsis of the taxonomic status of each genus, including the number of known species in Brazil in comparison to their global distribution, as well as the occurrence of the ant genera across biomes and the most recent study including taxonomic tools for species identification. The main objective of this guide is to facilitate the accurate identification of ants in Brazil, providing a systematic and practical approach in accessible language for researchers, students, and entomology enthusiasts. We hope to contribute to the advancement of taxonomic, ecological, and applied knowledge of Brazilian ants, as well as provide a tool for diversity studies and environmental education, contributing to the understanding and preservation of ants in the country with the highest biodiversity on the planet. A morphological study is carried out on the taxonomic characters of the species of the genus Bruchidius Schilsky, 1905, grouped in the bimaculatus subgeneric group, present in the Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal), the Balearic Islands, and the Canary Islands. The morphological characters and their value as a discriminating criterion of the species of the group are analyzed, as well as the concordant and discordant aspects of the known trophic biology of the different species. Alloxantha machadoi n. sp. is described from La Palma Island (Canary Islands). Males have toothed tarsal claws, stepped emargination of 9th sternite, metasternum with a pair of distal processes and median lobe apex with a simple ventral tooth and a paired dorsal tooth, very blunt. Apodeme of female 8th sternite not bifurcated and approximately as long as pygidium, which has a marked carina on the apical half of its dorsal surface. Due to these characters, it should be included in the ochracea group. In addition, new data on the biology and distribution of the other Canary species of Alloxantha are given. The genus Ctenomys (Rodentia: Hystricomorpha) includes an impressive diversity of species, all of which have evolved in southern South America. The number of recognized species is currently approaching 70. During the last few decades, taxonomic revisions and new field collections have resulted in both the description of new species and the synonymization of others, suggesting that much of the alpha taxonomy of Ctenomys remains unresolved, particularly when considering the vast areas of distribution that are still unsampled. Both phylogeographic patterns and the fossil record suggest that the Andean Cordillera has played a critical role in the diversification of the genus. Building upon recent, intensive field sampling in the Andean and pre-Andean regions of southern Mendoza Province, I integrated molecular and morphological data to evaluate the taxonomic status of populations of Ctenomys in this region. These analyses revealed a taxonomically-diverse Ctenomys assemblage within which here I provide the description for a new species. Available data indicate that this new species is endemic to southern portions of Mendoza Province, a geographic region that represents the confluence of 3 lineages ' magellanicus ,' ' maulinus ,' and ' mendocinus ,' and that it is thus an area of particular importance for the conservation of these rodents. Several issues regarding the systematics and taxonomy of the Neotropical deer tribe Odocoileini, an assemblage of 18 recognized living species currently allocated into 7 genera, remain unclear. The few available phylogenetic analyses indicate that some genera are not monophyletic and that species richness in the group is underestimated. One genus that presents both problems are the stocky and short-legged dwarf deer, Pudu. As currently understood, it includes 2 species, the Northern pudu, Pudu mephistophiles from Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia; and the Southern pudu, P. puda , from southern Chile and nearby Argentina. Here, by means of qualitative and quantitative morphologic analysis and the assessment of genetic variation, we showed that 2 distinct species are encompassed by the current concept of P. mephistophiles. The typical form distributes north of the Huancabamba Depression from northernmost Peru to the north (Ecuador and Colombia), while the other distributes south of the Huancabamba Depression and is a Peruvian endemic. As no name is available for the last one, we describe and name it here. This is the first living cervid species described in the 21st century and the first from the New World in over 60 years. Additionally, as the Southern Pudu (the type species of Pudu) is not sister to the 2 northern pudu species, we revalidate the genus Pudella to allocate the latter 2 species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cryptic biodiversity continues to be revealed worldwide, even in apparently well-known groups such as carnivorans. The Neotropical Otter (Lontra longicaudis) presents shape variation in its nose pad, a character that has been used to differentiate species in this group. Based on this, 3 subspecies are recognized: L. l. annectens (Mexico, Central America, and South America west of the Andes), L. l. enudris (Amazon and Orinoco basins), and L. l. longicaudis (Paraná basin and remaining distribution). Previous studies partially supported their distinctness based on mitochondrial DNA markers, morphometrics, and ecological niche modeling. We analyzed genome-wide nuclear markers (ultraconserved elements) of 29 L. longicaudis individuals across the species' range to assess its population structure. Phylogenomic analysis recovered L. longicaudis as paraphyletic with robust support, with 1 clade comprising samples from Mexico and Colombia (trans-Andean populations) and another encompassing the remaining samples (cis-Andean populations), which grouped with 2 other South American species, L. felina and L. provocax. Principal component and admixture analyses strongly differentiated the 2 main L. longicaudis groups, and distinguished the Amazonian individuals from the remaining cis-Andean samples. Our results support the recognition of trans-Andean populations of L. longicaudis as a distinct otter species, which should be recognized as Lontra annectens. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bats from the genus Vampyressa Thomas, 1900 are known from a relatively small number of individuals in Mexico. Through recent collecting efforts in southwestern Mexico, we detected several previously unknown populations of Vampyressa , which appeared to represent a lineage independent from but closely related to V. thyone. Here, we describe this lineage as a new species of the genus Vampyressa from the Mexican states of Guerrero and Oaxaca. The new species is currently known from at least 8 collected specimens and 3 released individuals from 8 localities, and can be differentiated from V. pusilla and V. thyone based on pelage and skull characters, size, mitochondrial Cytochrome b, and nuclear Recombination-activating gene 2 sequence data. The new species has been captured mainly in the lowlands but occurs along a wide altitudinal range from 150 to 2,200 m above sea level. Most of the records of the new species are from west of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, which evidences a new case of a phylogenetic break at this biogeographic barrier. The genus Vampyressa now includes 6 species, and Mexico expands its position as the country with the largest number of endemic bats in the Neotropics, totaling 20 endemics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new species from the Malesherbia sect. Malesherbia is described for the department of Lima, Peru. Malesherbia anxia is found in arid areas of the valley of the Chancay River (Huaral, Lima), on the western slope of the Andes, between 1,580 to 2,600 m. This species has morphological affinities with M. weberbaueri and M. splendens. A key for the identification of other related species is presented, accompanied by a comparative table of diagnostic morphological characters. With this taxonomic novelty, the number of Malesherbia species in Peru rises to 14, of which 12 are endemic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As a result of the collection of ferns and lycophytes in the Huasteca potosina of Mexico, a new species of Adiantum is described and illustrated. Adiantum aquismonense has morphological and anatomical features that distinguish it from Adiantum tricholepis and Adiantum feei. In particular, A. aquismonense has reddish-brown hairs and its geographical distribution tends towards the slope of the Gulf of Mexico. In contrast, A. tricholepis has hyaline hairs, and while A. feei has reddish hairs similar in color to those of the new species, they are shorter. All three species are found in Mexico. Anatomically, the fusion of vascular bundles of the petiole in A. aquismonense occurs distally in the petiole, whereas in A. tricholepis it occurs in the middle of the petiole. The spongy parenchyma of the leaves is more compact in A. tricholepis than in A. aquismonense. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Phylliroe bucephala is a nudibranch notable for having a laterally compressed body and a pelagic lifestyle. Although P. bucephala is widely distributed in tropical and subtropical waters of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans, it has not been recorded in the Colombian Pacific. Here we report the presence of the species in the coastal zone of Nuquí and Pizarro, two localities of Chocó - Colombia, and describe the main characteristics of the specimens collected. Several species from the genus Callinectes are economically important, yet the number of species and their geographic distributions remain unclear. Recently, one of the American species, Callinectes larvatus , was synonymized with one of the African species, C. marginatus , making C. marginatus the only species of the genus regarded to be amphi-Atlantic in distribution. However, there was no formal taxonomic study to support this taxonomic change, which was in contradiction to earlier studies that had provided morphological characters to support the taxonomic separation of the eastern Atlantic species from those of western Atlantic distribution. Callinectes maracaiboensis has also been questionably resurrected. Here we present a molecular based analysis for all species of Callinectes , using the two common mitochondrial genes 16S and 12S. Our molecular data support the presence of three eastern Atlantic, three eastern Pacific, and nine western Atlantic species. Historically, it appears that the separation of Africa and South America with the opening of the Atlantic basin gave rise to sister species distributed on opposite sides of the Atlantic Ocean. In a second isolation event, the emergence of the Panamanian isthmus resulted in pairs of geminate species distributed in eastern Pacific and western Atlantic waters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The genus Glassella had never been formally recorded in Brazil. Coelho (1996, 1997) assigned specimens collected in northeastern Brazil, in the states of Maranhão and Pernambuco, to Pinnixa floridana , a species that was recently allocated to Glassella and had its rediagnosis proposed. The reassessment of the material analysed by Coelho and the study of three additional specimens collected during an offshore expedition in the state of Espírito Santo resulted in the discovery and description of a new species and the recognition of another undescribed species of Glassella in Brazilian waters. The new species is herein named G. schubarti sp. nov., in honour of the late Christoph D. Schubart, who has made many important contributions to the study of evolution and diversity of brachyuran crabs. A new genus of pseudothelphusid crab is proposed to accommodate two species from the state of Rondônia in the southern Amazon region of Brazil. The new taxon was retrieved as a separate lineage from the genus Fredius Pretzmann, 1967, based on an integrative approach using molecular phylogenetic analysis and morphological characters of the male first gonopod, as well as taking into account its geographic distribution. In terms of gonopod morphology, the new genus resembles Fredius but it is characterized by an enlarged and distinctly inflated proximal portion of the cephalic lobe, a well-developed patch of strong, corneous spines along the mesial and abdominal surfaces of the cephalic lobe, and a mesial lobe that is extremely developed on a long, narrow, sinuous or convoluted projection. The porcelain crab Porcellana africana was originally identified as a subspecies of Porcellana platycheles , a species widely distributed in the eastern Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. A study characterizing the recent invasion of P. africana in South Africa places doubts on the identification and previously reported distribution of populations of the two species of Porcellana , which could have implications for the conservation and management of the species. Here, we aimed to delineate the Porcellana species from the East Atlantic to gain a better understanding of their distribution, which will help in conservation decision-making. Molecular analyses based on two mitochondrial genes and a nuclear gene confirmed that P. africana is a well-defined species and that its distribution extends further north, including the Canary Islands. A time divergence estimation indicates the cladogenesis between P. platycheles and P. africana occurred during the Neogene, likely linked to drastic climatic and environmental changes that took place during the Pliocene. We are reporting for the first time the presence of the crab Macropipus rugosus (Doflein, 1904) (Polybiidae) in the Canary Islands. This finding is based on the collection of three individuals off Tenerife. The collection, at coordinates 28°10′38″N, establishes a new northern distribution limit for this species. The species was previously known from tropical and subtropical seas off the west coast of Africa, has recently been reported in the waters of Cape Verde, and now we report it for the Canary Islands. We are reporting for the first time the presence of the hermit crab Pagurus chevreuxi (Bouvier, 1896) (Paguridae) in the Canary Islands. This finding is based on the collection of three individuals and the sighting of several additional specimens on the coast of Lanzarote. The collection, at coordinates 28°55′N, establishes a new southern distribution limit for this species. The species' geographical distribution aligns perfectly with the typical Atlanto-Mediterranean biogeographic pattern, which is characterized by benthic species showing a clear affinity for warm-temperate waters. Celebrities can generate substantial attention and influence public interest in species. Using a large‐scale examination of publicly available data, we assessed whether species across 6 taxonomic groups received more page views on Wikipedia when the species was named after a celebrity than when it was not. We conducted our analysis for 4 increasingly strict thresholds of how many average daily Wikipedia page views a celebrity had (1, 10, 100, or 1000 views). Overall, we found a high probability (0.96–0.98) that species named after celebrities had more page views than their closest relatives that were not named after celebrities, irrespective of the celebrity threshold. The multiplicative effect on species' page views was larger but more uncertain as celebrity page‐view thresholds increased. The range for thresholds of 1 to 1000 was 1.08 (95% credible interval [CI] 1.00–1.18) to 1.76 (95% CI 0.96–2.80), respectively. The hierarchical estimates for the taxa tended to be positive. The strongest effects were for invertebrates, followed by amphibians, reptiles, fish, and mammals, whereas the weakest effect was for birds at lower page‐view thresholds. Our results suggest that naming species after celebrities could be particularly significant for those belonging to taxonomic groups that are generally less popular than others (e.g., invertebrates). Celebrities may further influence the effectiveness of this marketing strategy, depending on their likability and connection to the species named after them. Eponyms may serve as a reminder of the disproportionate power dynamics between populations and some namesakes' untenable actions. However, they also provide an opportunity to recognize remarkable individuals and promote equity, inclusivity, and diversity in taxonomic practice. We encourage taxonomists to examine whether naming threatened species after celebrities could affect conservation support, especially for species that are otherwise typically overlooked by the public. Austrolebias accorsii is redescribed based on specimens from type-locality, nearby temporary pools, and other locations within the same hydrologic unit. Additionally, a novel Austrolebias species is described, exclusively found in two temporary waterbodies in "Abayoy", a unique vegetation type situated in the transitional zone between the Dry Chaco, Chiquitano Dry Forest, and Pantanal Flooded Savannas ecoregions in southeastern Bolivia, bordering Paraguay, where the last voluntarily isolated indigenous people outside the Amazon in America reside. Diagnostic characters for both species are presented. Within Austrolebias two species groups are recognized with different morphological characters, geographical distribution, and ecological traits of their habitats. Furthermore, we suggest the usage of median and interquartile range rather than mean and standard deviation to analyze morphometric and meristic data of rivulids, given the typically non-Gaussian distribution of this data. The whip spider Paraphrynus maya Armas, Trujillo & Agreda, 2017, (Amblypygi: Phrynidae) previously known only from Guatemala, is recorded for the first time from Honduras on the basis of an adult female from Trojes, El Paraíso department, Honduras. Now, the Honduran arachnofauna contains two confirmed Paraphrynus species: Pa. laevifrons (Pocock, 1894) and Pa. maya. Also, the paratypes of Pa. maya from Alta Verapaz department, Guatemala, are regarded as misidentified specimens of Pa. williamsi Mullinex, 1975. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A survey of recent taxonomic studies of birds that included acoustic trait analyses reveals that most studies have not archived the sound recordings that support their conclusions, despite the current availability of online, publicly available collections of bird sounds. In addition, bird sound recordings have often been cited without unique accession numbers that permit unambiguous sample identification and in considerably less detail than other types of samples, such as museum specimens or genetic samples. Both this lack of data openness and the way acoustic samples have been cited undermine the methodological rigor that otherwise characterizes many of these studies, and much invaluable biological data are likely to be lost over time if bird sound recordings are not archived in long-term collections. I suggest that these problems can be easily addressed by embracing the open data movement and adopting some best practices that are widely used in other fields. Just as study skins and DNA sequences are required to be deposited in publicly available collections such as natural history museums and the GenBank, respectively, sound recordings used in taxonomic studies with acoustic trait analyses should be archived in publicly available collections as a condition for publication of associated results. Authors of taxonomic studies involving sounds should archive their sound recordings and provide unique accession numbers for sound recordings examined, and journals and reviewers should ensure that authors have done so. Se reportan nuevos registros de zooplancton en el Pacífico tropical mexicano, con un énfasis particular en apendicularias. Las muestras se recolectaron entre enero de 2023 y junio de 2024 en diversas localidades utilizando redes de plancton, así como técnicas de ADN ambiental y filogenia molecular para la identificación precisa de ciertas especies. Se determinó un total de 12 nuevos registros para el Pacífico mexicano y tres registros específicos en ciertas áreas, incluyendo especies de los géneros Pseudevadne, Penilia, Appendicularia, Fritillaria y Oikopleura. Entre los hallazgos, destaca la primera caracterización molecular de Oikopleura dioica en México, revelando alta similitud genética con poblaciones japonesas, lo que subraya la distribución compartida entre la parte nororiental y noroccidental del Océano Pacífico. El nuevo registro de dos subespecies del género Fritillaria para México y el hallazgo de preferencias entre aguas oceánicas y costeras de los géneros Oikolpeura y Fritillaria. Este estudio no solo amplía el conocimiento sobre la riqueza y distribución de estos organismos en el Pacífico tropical mexicano, también proporciona una base sólida para futuras investigaciones en taxonomía, ecología y biogeografía de apendicularias y otros zoopláncteres, así como enfatizar en las posibles limitantes en el conocimiento de estos grupos. Los resultados obtenidos subrayan la necesidad de realizar estudios específicos con mayor esfuerzo de muestreo en diferentes escalas espaciales y temporales para entender mejor la biodiversidad marina de esta región. Asimismo, se recomienda el uso de técnicas moleculares para mejorar la precisión en la identificación y comprensión de la dinámica de las comunidades zooplanctónicas.
