Background: Risky sexual practices among taxi drivers pose a significant threat to public health, contributing to the spread of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV/AIDS. The nature of their profession often exposes taxi drivers to factors that increase their vulnerability to engaging in risky sexual practices. Although research on sexual health in general is readily available, studies specifically focused on this population are limited. Understanding the contributing factors behind risky sexual practices among taxi drivers is crucial to developing targeted interventions that address their unique needs and vulnerabilities. Objectives: To assess the prevalence and associated factors of risky sexual practices among taxi drivers in Finoteselam town, northwest Ethiopia, 2023. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 359 taxi drivers in the Finoteselam town. Data were collected using pre-tested questionnaires and analyzed using SPSS. Bivariate and multivariable analyses were performed to identify factors associated with risky sexual practices. In the bivariate analysis, a p -value ≤ 0.25 at 95% CI was used to consider the variables in the multivariate analysis. Finally, statistical significance was declared with a p -value of less than 0.05 with a 95% CI. Results: The prevalence of risky sexual practices among taxi drivers was 32.9 (95% CI: 28.01, 38.7). Living alone (AOR = 3.47, 95% CI: 1.86, 6.48), taxi ownership (AOR = 2.08, 95% CI: 1.01, 4.25), neglecting the discussion of the SRH issue (AOR = 2.05, 95% CI: 1.08, 4.00), substance use (AOR = 1.56, 95% CI: 1.04, 2.09), attending night clubs (AOR = 6.04, 95% CI: 1.97, 18.55) and watching pornographic materials (AOR = 4.44, 95% CI: 2.14, 9.19) were significantly associated with risky sexual practices. Conclusions and recommendation: This study revealed a high prevalence of risky sexual practices among taxi drivers in Finoteselam town. Therefore, a comprehensive approach involving different stakeholders is required for reducing risky sexual practices. Information dissemination, awareness creation (about risks of attending nightclubs, substance use, and watching pornography), and encouraging knowledge sharing about sexual health are some of the interventions required to reduce risky sexual practices among taxi drivers. Abstract Introduction Taxi drivers, as professional drivers, encounter numerous ergonomic risk factors related to musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) because of the demands of their jobs. This study conducted as a systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to explore the prevalence of MSDs among taxi drivers. Materials and methods The present study followed the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, and its protocol was registered in the international prospective register of systematic review (PROSPERO) under the code CRD42024509258. Searches were carried out using various databases, such as PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Science Direct, SID, ISC, and Google Scholar, with no time restrictions until February 7th, 2024. A random effects model was utilized for meta-analysis, and the I2 index was employed to assess heterogeneity among studies. Lastly, data analysis was conducted using STATA software (version 14). Results After the initial search, 1606 articles were extracted from the reviewed sources. Following screening, study selection, and quality evaluation, a total of 11 studies were chosen for meta-analysis, involving 5277 taxi drivers. Abstract Background Taxi drivers in a Chinese megacity are frequently exposed to traffic-related particulate matter (PM2.5) due to their job nature, busy road traffic, and urban density. A robust method to quantify dynamic population exposure to PM2.5 among taxi drivers is important for occupational risk prevention, however, it is limited by data availability. Methods This study proposed a rapid assessment of dynamic exposure to PM2.5 among drivers based on satellite-derived information, air quality data from monitoring stations, and GPS-based taxi trajectory data. An empirical study was conducted in Wuhan, China, to examine spatial and temporal variability of dynamic exposure and compare whether drivers’ exposure exceeded the World Health Organization (WHO) and China air quality guideline thresholds. Kernel density estimation was conducted to further explore the relationship between dynamic exposure and taxi drivers’ activities. Results The taxi drivers’ weekday and weekend 24-h PM2.5 exposure was 83.60 μg/m3 and 55.62 μg/m3 respectively, 3.4 and 2.2 times than the WHO’s recommended level of 25 µg/m3. Specifically, drivers with high PM2.5 exposure had a higher average trip distance and smaller activity areas. Although major transportation interchanges/terminals were the common activity hotspots for both taxi drivers with high and low exposure, activity hotspots of drivers with high exposure were mainly located in busy riverside commercial areas within historic and central districts bounded by the “Inner Ring Road”, while hotspots of drivers with low exposure were new commercial areas in the extended urbanized area bounded by the “Third Ring Road”. Conclusion These findings emphasized the need for air quality management and community planning to mitigate the potential health risks of taxi drivers.

This cross-sectional study was done aiming at determining the exposure of taxi drivers to vibration on 35 safe taxis (19 cars with engine volume of 1.325 L, 9 cars with engine volume of 1.645 L, and 7 cars with engine volume of 1.761 L). Measurements were based on 'ISO 2631-1' on seats' pans, by Castel GA2005 vibrometer. The results through two different evaluative methods indicated moderate exposure levels, corresponding to suggestive Health Guidance Caution Zone (HGCZ) in 'ISO 2631-1'. Evaluation of exposure to the WBV among taxi drivers, in the taxis with low and high mean acceleration values, using the VDV method is preferred over the R.M.S method. In lower accelerations, in all conditions, the mean of the reckoned values in the VDV method was less than the R.M.S method, and in higher accelerations, where there are more differences, and the CF values were higher (PAIK 1761 cars), again the assessed mean duration in the VDV method is less than R.M.S method. The rapid global expansion of the taxi industry has brought significant safety concerns regarding taxi trips, particularly related to the frequency of taxi crashes and their potential impact on road safety. To address this issue, the present study focuses on investigating the impact of time pressure on the driving speed of male taxi drivers through the use of driving simulator experiment. The aim of this study was to understand how time pressure influences driving speed at speed violation camera locations. A total of 56 taxi drivers participated in the study, with five drivers excluded due to simulation sickness. The findings revealed a significance of time pressure as a critical factor influencing driving speed among taxi drivers. Specifically, the study results showed that under time pressure situation, taxi drivers displayed significantly higher speeds, particularly in proximity to speed camera locations. To improve road safety, policymakers should focus on addressing time pressure concerns among taxi drivers. This essay is a review of and retrospective on 'Metal and Melancholy', a 1994 documentary on taxi drivers in Lima, Peru, which effectively captures the aftermath of social, political and economic collapse. I argue the film is a window into and a warning against a possible planetary future where human beings endure through ingenuity and entrepeneurship but without the transformative tools of collective action. It also speaks to the current political crisis in Peru, which can be directly traced to the 1990s.

Background: Freedom of movement, which is dependent on community mobility, is a key contributor to good quality of life and important in the establishment of a person’s community identity. Objective: To describe the community mobility experiences of wheelchair users who lived in a socio-economically challenged setting. Method: The study setting was Paarl, a peri-urban area of the Western Cape province of South Africa. This article reports findings from phase 1 (a reflection on past community mobility and minibus taxi use experiences) of cycle 1 of a co-operative inquiry. Nine adult wheelchair users, eight caregivers, six minibus taxi drivers, and four community stakeholders participated. Data were collected during a focus group discussion and analysed using inductive thematic analysis. Results: Four themes, ‘Knowledge, attitudes, and actions’, ‘Natural, manmade and mechanical environmental barriers’, ‘Health and safety concerns’ and ‘Poor community participation and quality of life’ were identified. The themes showed how difficult an everyday activity like moving around in the community were for wheelchair users, and how that limited their community involvement. Conclusions: Wheelchair users living in a low-income peri-urban area struggled to participate in community activities meaningful to them because various barriers hampered community wheelchair mobility and minibus taxi use. Contribution: The findings regarding community mobility struggles and specifically minibus taxi access guided specific recommendations and the further phases and cycles of the co-operative inquiry. The purpose of the co-operative inquiry was to allow co-researchers to find their voice and develop solutions to minibus taxi access for wheelchair users.

The present study attempted to explore the effects of sleep deprivation on the visual search patterns and hazard response times of taxi drivers when they encountered different types of hazards. A two (driver groups: sleep deprivation or control) × two (hazard types: covert hazard or overt hazard) mixed experimental design was employed. A total of 60 drivers were recruited, half of whom were in the sleep-deprived group and half of whom were in the control group. A validated video-based hazard perception test that either contained covert hazards (12 video clips) or overt hazards (12 video clips) filmed from the drivers' perspective was presented to participants. Participants were instructed to click the left mouse button quickly once they detected a potentially dangerous situation that could lead to an accident. Participants' response time and eye movements relative to the hazards were recorded. The sleep-deprived group had a significantly longer response time and took a longer time to first fixate on covert hazards than the control group, while they had a shorter response time to overt hazards than the control group. The first fixation duration of sleep-deprived drivers was longer than that of the control group for overt hazards, while the duration of the first fixation of the two driver groups was similar for covert hazards. Sleep deprivation affects the visual search patterns and response times to hazards, and the adverse effects of sleep deprivation were worse in relation to covert hazards. The findings have some implications for classifying and evaluating high-risk taxi drivers whose hazard perception ability might be affected by insufficient sleep. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: Mental disorders and substance use disorders are highly comorbid. The "self-medication hypothesis" posits that individuals may use substances such as tobacco and alcohol to cope with symptoms associated with untreated mental health problems. The present study examined the association between having a currently untreated mental health condition and tobacco and alcohol use among male taxi drivers in NYC, a population at risk for poor mental and physical health outcomes. Methods: The sample included 1105 male, ethnoracially diverse, primarily foreign-born NYC taxi drivers participating in a health fair program. This secondary cross-sectional analysis utilized logistic regression modeling to examine whether endorsement of a currently untreated mental health problem (i.e., depression, anxiety, or posttraumatic stress disorder) was associated with alcohol and/or tobacco use, controlling for potential confounders. Results: 8.5% of drivers reported having mental health problems; among these, only 0.5% reported receiving treatment. Untreated mental health problems were associated with an increased risk of current tobacco/alcohol use after controlling for age, educational attainment, nativity, and pain history: drivers with untreated mental health problems had 1.9x the odds of reporting current tobacco use [95% CI: 1.10–3.19] and 1.6x the odds of reporting current alcohol use [95% CI: 1.01–2.46] than those without untreated mental health problems. Conclusions: Few drivers with mental health problems receive treatment. In line with the self-medication hypothesis, drivers with untreated mental health problems demonstrated significantly increased risk of tobacco and alcohol use. There are concerns over traffic-related air pollution in Uganda's capital, Kampala. Individuals in the transportation sector are hypothesized to be at greater risk for exposure to volatile organic compounds, given their proximity to vehicle exhaust. Silicone wristbands are a wearable technology that passively sample individuals' chemical exposures. We conducted a pilot cross sectional study to measure personal exposures to volatile organic compounds among 14 transportation workers who wore a wristband for five days. We analyzed for 75 volatile organic compounds; 33 chemicals (35%) were detected and quantified in at least 50% of the samples and 15 (16%) chemicals were detected and quantified across all the samples. Specific chemicals were associated with participants' occupation. The findings can guide future large studies to inform policy and practice to reduce exposure to chemicals in the environment in Kampala. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is important to examine relationship between work-life balance, work stress, and fatigue of taxi drivers. This stress reduces performance and satisfaction of the individual at work and other daily life activities, and causes intense mental fatigue. It is important to make the necessary arrangements to increase the work-life balance. Purpose: This is a descriptive study that was conducted to examine the effect of work-life balance on job stress and fatigue in taxi drivers. Methods: The study included 150 taxi drivers residing in Ankara. As a data collection tool, we used Work-Life Balance, Chalder Fatigue, and Work Stress Scales. We used the Mann-Whitney U test and multiple linear regression analysis. Results: The model established after multiple linear regression analysis was statistically significant (F [5.142] = 5.442, P < 0.001). A 1-unit increase in the work-life balance variable caused a 2.885-unit decrease in the work stress score and a 0.143-unit decrease in the fatigue score. Conclusions: We can suggest that taxi drivers who have a work-life balance will be able to participate in social activities in their daily lives, and leisure time activities with family and friends can help motivate individuals more and increase energy. The South African taxi industry has a negative image that is associated with violence and disrespect for its clients. This has led to it losing many of its clients to other industry players leading to more violence as taxi owners lose profits. The issue of communication as a possible solution to the challenges the taxi industry experiences, from the perspectives of the taxi drivers, has not been explored. Hence, this paper sought to gather the views of drivers on the role of improved communication to bringing about peace and good relations with passengers. A qualitative approach was adopted as a form of data collection in which 12 participants were interviewed in the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality in South Africa. The participants were selected among the taxi drivers who were asked to share their communication challenges and strategies. The findings revealed that poor communication skills and language can be a barrier to communication between drivers and passengers and between taxi associations. Effective communication strategies can contribute to economic freedom and peace. A further finding from the study is that taxi drivers, acting on their own agency, can tackle communication challenges in the eThekwini taxi industry and contribute to change. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Taxis are essential part of transportation systems in both urban and rural areas, as they cover targeted needs of travelers in a safe and efficient manner. The way taxis are hailed, or otherwise "hailing channels", are subject to continuous development and adjustment to modem technologies. For instance, street-hailing, cabstands and phone-hailing (radio taxi) have been the predominant channels in the past years, while hailing applications have rapidly been growing in market share lately. However, each channel comes with several advantages and disadvantages that stimulate policy makers to promote or undermine specific channels, depending on their aims and needs. As such, identifying the factors affecting drivers' preferences on those channels is necessary for targeted policies to be applied. In this study, those factors are investigated through the development of a multinomial regression model, based on the dataset collected from a questionnaire survey among taxi drivers in Greece. Findings suggest that phone-hailing is the drivers' most preferred channel, with street-hailing, applications and cabstands being also popular among them. Professional experience, daily revenue, familiarity with smartphone operation and English fluency, are significant socio-demographic determinants of driver preference on specific taxi-hailing channels. Additional professional characteristics (some of them related to tourism) may also influence driver preferences. A rather interesting finding suggests that drivers' environmental awareness is related to the probability of preferring doing business through taxi-hailing applications. With the expansion of the use of digital technologies, the nature of almost all service industries has changed. Taxi services are no exception. The use of mobile applications, and the creation of call centres, have simplified the access of passengers to taxis and created a new situation. Despite this, with the emergence of a new situation, new problems appeared. This article aims to study taxi services organization and regulation. Thus, surveys were conducted to study attitudes towards offered services for passengers and drivers, the main participants in the taxi market. The questionnaires are aimed at studying the satisfaction of passengers and the attitude of drivers to working conditions. The total weight of using a taxi in comparison with other types of urban transport is determined. The frequency and main reasons for requests for taxi services were identified. This paper also studied the degree of use of mobile applications for calling a taxi and the distribution of orders between taxi companies. Surveys among drivers were mainly aimed at studying the mode of their work and their attitude to the conditions offered by taxi companies. To solve the identified problems, an appropriate regulation method through a single digital platform was proposed.

Background and Objective: Traffic accidents are one of the most important challenges metropolises face, which impose significant costs on them every year. This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of accidents and the factors affecting them among city taxi drivers in Kermanshah, Iran. Materials and Methods: In this descriptive-analytical cross-sectional study, 320 male urban taxi drivers in Kermanshah were investigated in 2018. The required data were collected using a multi-part questionnaire including demographic and occupational characteristics, a visual analog scale for fatigue, and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. To analyze the data, non-parametric statistical tests and logistic regression models were employed by using SPSS software (version 25). Results: The frequency of accidents among urban taxi drivers of Kermanshah was 38.3% (n=123). BACKGROUND: Taxi drivers are prone to musculoskeletal problems and can suffer from cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, and psychosocial problems. For occupational health and safety it is crucial to know the risk factors and initiatives to be taken for protection. OBJECTIVES: This study was carried out to evaluate the opinions of taxi drivers regarding occupational risks and prevention strategies. METHODS: This was a descriptive and cross-sectional study including 524 taxi drivers. A questionnaire was developed to determine the opinions of taxi drivers regarding occupational risks and intervention strategies. For the analysis of data, Mann-Whitney U (Z-table value), descriptive statistics (number, percentage) and Chi-square (χ2) test between dependent and independent variables were used. RESULTS: Among the taxi drivers, the occupation was reported to be risky for musculoskeletal system disorders by 67%, for cardiovascular diseases by 68.3%, for respiratory diseases by 46.9% and for psychosocial problems by 63.3%. When the opinions of taxi drivers regarding prevention from these risks were examined, 30.2% of them stated prevention from musculoskeletal system disorders, 34.0% from cardiovascular diseases, 31.3% from respiratory diseases and 40.1% from psychosocial problems. It was a prominent finding to see a decrease in the number of drivers who stated to show prevention behavior towards these risks compared to their states of recognizing them. CONCLUSIONS: Drivers were insufficient both in recognizing health risks of their jobs and implementing intervention strategies. Aggression refers to the unpleasant behavior of a person towards another person. Although the use of brute force comes to life in people's minds when aggression is mentioned, it is very difficult to define a single behavior or group of behaviors as aggression. Because aggression can turn into behavior in many different ways. Violence and aggression in traffic have increased significantly in recent years. Given the lack of regulations regarding violent and aggressive behavior, the number of incidents and accidents involving drivers has increased significantly. This study aims to examine the relationship among socio-demographic characteristics, aggression and life satisfaction levels of taxi drivers. Quantitative research design was used in the study. The sample of the research consists of 146 taxi drivers registered in 19 taxi stands in Istanbul. As a data collection tool, a semi)structured sociodemographic form prepared by the researcher; Aggression Scale developed by Buss and Perry (1992); Life Satisfaction Scale developed by Diener et al. (1985) were used. When the results of the research are examined, all of the participants are male and 92.5% of them are at high school or below education level. It was found that Taxi drivers work 11.3 hours a day; and 72.6% of them felt under stress in traffic. The consumption of unhealthy foods and a sedentary lifestyle predispose individuals to non-communicable diseases. This study investigated the distribution and the association of plant-based diets (PBDs) and dietary patterns in relation to the cardiometabolic risks in commercial taxi drivers. A cross-sectional analysis was conducted among males (≥19 years) who consumed street foods sold by vendors in the Cape Metropole. A validated questionnaire was administered, including a quantified 24 h dietary recall, and fasting blood samples were collected for biochemical analyses. Statistical analyses were performed to investigate the association between dietary habits and cardiometabolic risks, while adjusting for confounding variables. The analytic sample consisted of 189 males with a median age of 38 years. The taxi drivers who ranked in the top-third of the healthy plant-based diet index (hPDI) had a 1–4% lower likelihood of having raised triglycerides (TG). Furthermore, consumption patterns including refined grains and meat conferred a 33% lower likelihood of dysglycaemia (p = 0.049), while fish/seafood, potatoes, and vegetables conferred a 43% greater likelihood of low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) (p = 0.026) and 44% greater probability of raised low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) (p = 0.027). Consumption patterns, including sugar-sweetened beverages and eggs, conferred a 37% greater probability of hypertension (p = 0.047) and 53% greater likelihood of subclinical inflammation (p = 0.017). These preliminary findings require larger and more elaborate studies to explore the associations between PBDs and dietary patterns in at-risk African populations, with or without sedentary lifestyles, and exposure to unhealthy food environments. Abstract Whole body vibration (WBV) is a recognized occupational hazard for many workers such as drivers and operators of heavy and light machinery and exposure to it is accompanied by physical and mental repercussions. Only the limited studies have been done on the effects of vibration exposure on reproductive indices, however vibration exposure has been indicated as being a hazardous agents with the potential of being able to directly affect the reproductive system. Considering the importance of infertility, the present study was conducted with the aim of investigating semen quality among taxi drivers in Tehran and determine the effect of exposure to WBV on sperm parameters. The study population consisted of 70 taxi drivers and 70 office employee who attended infertility clinics for diagnostic purposes in the past year. The participants had to meet the entry criteria of the study while also being willing to recruit. Data was collected in the form of demographic questionnaires and general health questionnaires as well as sperm analysis conducted in an infertility clinic according to standard laboratory guidelines. The 8-hour time-weighted average (TWA) exposure to of WBV in automobile was measured as per ISO 2631-1. The TWA exposure to WBV among the taxi drivers and office employees were 0.697 ± 0.13 m/s2 and 0.068 ± 0.09 m/s2 respectively (P 0.05); moreover exposure to WBV resulted in the larger effect size (B) on sperm parameters than the demographic variables (P > 0.05). Being taxi drivers increase the chance of the decreased semen quality (P > 0.05). It is difficult to draw definitive conclusions regarding the effects of WBV while intervening factors exist, such as psychological stressors, quality of sleep, background issues as well as environmental factors such as chemical pollutants (heavy metals) or ergonomic factors (body posture and working while sitting down).

With the expansion of the use of digital technologies, the nature of almost all service industries has changed. Taxi services are no exception. The use of mobile applications, and the creation of call centres, have simplified the access of passengers to taxis and created a new situation. Despite this, with the emergence of a new situation, new problems appeared. This article aims to study taxi services organization and regulation. Thus, surveys were conducted to study attitudes towards offered services for passengers and drivers, the main participants in the taxi market. The questionnaires are aimed at studying the satisfaction of passengers and the attitude of drivers to working conditions. The total weight of using a taxi in comparison with other types of urban transport is determined. The frequency and main reasons for requests for taxi services were identified. This paper also studied the degree of use of mobile applications for calling a taxi and the distribution of orders between taxi companies. Surveys among drivers were mainly aimed at studying the mode of their work and their attitude to the conditions offered by taxi companies. We study how daily labor supply responds to unanticipated earnings shocks among Singapore's taxi drivers using a novel identification strategy that uses idiosyncratic variation in booking cancellations and passenger no-shows (CNS) that drivers repeatedly receive. Our results provide new and more compelling evidence in support of the income-targeting model of labor supply. Not only are the average responses on the extensive margin consistent with the income-targeting model, but the responses on the intensive margin and the heterogeneous responses at different income levels and across driver characteristics are as well. We find that drivers work longer and earn more per hour following CNS, and the effects are robust after controlling for rich fixed effects, market supply and demand conditions, and drivers' sunk cost of time. The CNS effects on ending a shift exhibit a U-shaped pattern, are strongest when cumulative income is close to the average shift income, and become insignificant when the income level is too low or too high. The effects are most pronounced in the first hour of CNS and fade away quickly afterward. Drivers achieve higher productivity by reducing break time, taking more jobs, driving faster, driving to places with more earning opportunities, and having more time with passengers on board. Drivers choose the response strategies that are complementary to their abilities and circumstances such as schedule flexibility and potential for productivity improvement: those with flexible working schedules tend to prolong their shifts, whereas those with flexible earnings rates tend to increase their subsequent productivity. Our novel identification strategy strengthens the empirical literature on daily labor supply, and our findings of heterogeneity effects offer new insights on income-targeting behaviors. • Driving violations, driving errors, and inattention errors are taxi drivers' risky behaviour. • The link between commercial taxi drivers' risky driving behaviors and their involvement in road traffic accidents is examined. • Driving violation and driving error show significant influence on road traffic accidents. • The risky driving behaviours that require drastic action for mitigation of road traffic accidents reported. Taxis are essential to economic growth due to the ease and comfort they offer passengers. This is evident as most cities, especially in Africa, are dominated by taxis providing door-to-door services. However, their susceptibility to road traffic accidents (RTA) raises serious concerns due to their risky driving behaviours. In contrast, studies on taxi driver involvement in RTA due to their risky driving behaviours are sparse, especially in African countries. Consequently, the study examined the relationship between risky driving behaviour and traffic accident involvement among Nigerian commercial taxi drivers using the structural equation modeling (SEM) approach. Prior to the structural model analysis, the modified driver behaviour questionnaire (DBQ) was valid. This was assessed through the measurement model, and the results showed that the composite reliability, average variance extracted, and discriminant validity were greater than 0.7, greater than 0.5, and less than 0.90, respectively. Furthermore, the structural equation modeling results show that the driving violation and driving error constructs influenced road traffic accidents among taxi drivers, while inattention error was insignificant (p > 0.05). Although driving violations and errors significantly increase the chances of RTA among taxi drivers, driving violations had a more substantial influence than driving errors. Also, the regression coefficient indicates the risky driving behaviour of commercial taxi drivers accounts for 5.2 % of the RTAs in Nigeria. This research contributed to validating the DBQ for commercial taxi drivers in Nigeria, examining the influence of their driving violations, driving errors, and inattention errors on accident involvement and that inattention error may not necessarily influence accidents, which will aid policymakers in formulating mitigative strategies for RTA reductions. The present study attempted to explore the effects of sleep deprivation on the visual search patterns and hazard response times of taxi drivers when they encountered different types of hazards. A two (driver groups: sleep deprivation or control) × two (hazard types: covert hazard or overt hazard) mixed experimental design was employed. A total of 60 drivers were recruited, half of whom were in the sleep-deprived group and half of whom were in the control group. A validated video-based hazard perception test that either contained covert hazards (12 video clips) or overt hazards (12 video clips) filmed from the drivers’ perspective was presented to participants. Participants were instructed to click the left mouse button quickly once they detected a potentially dangerous situation that could lead to an accident. Participants’ response time and eye movements relative to the hazards were recorded. The sleep-deprived group had a significantly longer response time and took a longer time to first fixate on covert hazards than the control group, while they had a shorter response time to overt hazards than the control group. The first fixation duration of sleep-deprived drivers was longer than that of the control group for overt hazards, while the duration of the first fixation of the two driver groups was similar for covert hazards. Sleep deprivation affects the visual search patterns and response times to hazards, and the adverse effects of sleep deprivation were worse in relation to covert hazards. The findings have some implications for classifying and evaluating high-risk taxi drivers whose hazard perception ability might be affected by insufficient sleep.

Although taxi drivers are more exposed to traffic crashes, they usually exhibit riskier behaviors and more negative attitudes toward road safety. For example, previous research suggests that they are particularly reluctant to wear seat belts. The research aimed (a) to estimate the prevalence of seat belt use among taxi drivers compared to other professional and non-professional drivers (Study 1, n = 3.810) and (b) to explore attitudes toward seat belt use in taxi drivers using the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) (Study 2, n = 100). Study 1 showed lower seat belt use among taxi drivers (vs. other professional and non-professional drivers). Study 2 showed that self-reported use tends to be higher than the estimated observed use and that negative experiential attitudes appear to be essential for understanding the reluctance of taxi drivers to use seat belts. Practical implications and future lines of research are discussed.

Few studies have explored the possible associations between air pollution and tear lactoferrin (Lf) levels, a non-invasive biological marker of ocular surface diseases, among taxi drivers, while none have explored the modifications by stress and allergic tendencies in the relationship. We recruited 1905 taxi drivers with dry eye disease (DED) and 3803 non-DED controls in Liaoning, China, in 2012–2014. After physical examination and questionnaires were recorded, ocular surface was measured and tear Lf was determined by electrophoresis. Air pollutants and humidity were estimated by measured concentrations from monitoring stations. Conditional logistic regression models were employed to examine the associations of air pollutants and humidity with tear Lf levels. Among taxi drivers with stress or allergic tendencies, an IQR (26 μg/m3, 10 μg/m3) increase in PM10 and NO2 levels elevated the adjusted odds ratio by 1.89 (95% CI, 1.19 to 3.08) or 1.77 (95% CI, 1.06 to 2.90); and 2.87 (95% CI, 1.60 to 3.58) or 2.93 (95% CI, 1.64 to 3.83), respectively. In contrast, humidity was inversely associated for taxi drivers with stress [0.51 (95% CI, 0.38 to 0.64)] or allergic tendencies [0.49 (95% CI, 0.11 to 0.84)]; and for taxi drivers without stress [0.33 (95% CI: 0.17, 0.39)] or without allergic tendencies [0.39 (95% CI, 0.19 to 0.59)]. Tear Lf was negatively associated with each quartile of PM10 or NO2 exposure, and low humidity. Objectives. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and associated factors of lower back pain (LBP) among taxi drivers working in Mekelle city, Tigray, Ethiopia in 2018. Methods. A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted from April to May 2018 on a sample of 294 male taxi drivers in Mekelle city, Tigray, Ethiopia. A self-administered questionnaire adapted from the Nordic musculoskeletal questionnaire was used to collect data. Independent variables that had a significant association were identified using logistic regression models. Results were reported using texts and frequency distribution tables. Results. From a total sample of 304 male drivers, 294 taxi drivers participated; hence, the response rate was 96.7%. Prevalence of self-reported LBP in the past 12 months among taxi drivers was 27.9%. Average daily hours of driving (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] 2.296, 95% confidence interval [CI] [1.194, 4.416]), using lumbar support while driving (AOR 2.075, 95% CI [1.130, 3.808]) and lack of ergonomic awareness (AOR 2.478, 95% CI [1.343, 4.575]) were significantly associated (p < 0.05) with LBP among taxi drivers. Conclusion. Prevalence of LBP in this study was more than a quarter. Background and Objective: Traffic accidents are one of the most important challenges metropolises face, which impose significant costs on them every year. This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of accidents and the factors affecting them among city taxi drivers in Kermanshah, Iran. Materials and Methods: In this descriptive-analytical cross-sectional study, 320 male urban taxi drivers in Kermanshah were investigated in 2018. The required data were collected using a multi-part questionnaire including demographic and occupational characteristics, a visual analog scale for fatigue, and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. To analyze the data, nonparametric statistical tests and logistic regression models were employed by using SPSS software (version 25). Results: The frequency of accidents among urban taxi drivers of Kermanshah was 38.3% (n=123). Significant differences were observed in the variables of work experience, fatigue level, and smoking among drivers with and without accidents (P<0.05). Based on logistic regression, smoking (odds ratio: 2.68 and 95% confidence interval: 1.66-4.33) and one unit increase in the fatigue level (odds ratio: 1.01 and 95% confidence interval: 1.00-0.1-02) were significantly associated with an increased chance of the accident in the drivers. Conclusion: Due to the relatively high prevalence of accidents among urban taxi drivers, it is necessary to design and prioritize comprehensive programs to identify and control the factors affecting accidents in this group of drivers. Aim: Cognitive function factors have been reported as an effective factor in the incidence of traffic accidents. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of heat stress on the cognitive performance parameters of taxi drivers. Materials and Methods: This prospective cohort study was performed on 29 taxi drivers in both winter and summer. The parameters studied in this study were precision, speed of work, attention, short-term auditory memory, concentration skills, mental fatigue, the wet bulb glob temperature index, and the thermal comfort parameters. Results: The mean and standard deviation of drivers age was 52.24 ± 8.28 years. People's performance in terms of speed, precision, number of errors, and attention in the summer morning shift was better than the winter evening shift, but these parameters dropped sharply in the evening shift in the summer. There was a statitistically significant difference between these parameters in the morning and evening of summer (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The results of this study showed that heat stress reduces the precision, speed of work and attention and increases the number of errors and mental fatigue of drivers. Therefore, it is necessary to plan to improve the working conditions of drivers to prevent the reduction of drivers' cognitive performance and improve driving conditions.

Income and employment are recognised as social determinants of health. Occupationally related exposures and working conditions impact health behaviours. Taxi drivers have been recognised as an occupationally COVID‐19 at‐risk group. COVID‐19 threatens their lives and livelihoods. This study describes self‐reported income changes attributed to the COVID‐19 pandemic among taxi drivers. Associations between percentage change in income and reported prevention practices were ascertained. In May 2020, a cross‐sectional study was done among 282 taxi drivers in the Kingston and St. Andrew Metropolitan Area in Jamaica. Multi‐stage sampling was used to select taxi driver from seven hubs. Data collection utilised a 28‐item questionnaire. Self‐reported income before and during the COVID‐19 pandemic was ascertained and correlations between relative changes in income and COVID‐19 prevention practices were assessed. The median pre‐COVID‐19 monthly income was USD 1,428.57 (IQR = 1,467.26), about USD 51/day. Median monthly income since the COVID‐19 outbreak was USD 500 (IQR = 472.37), about USD 18/day, representing a 65% reduction in income. There was a statistically significant association between the relative change in income and the practice of wearing mask while transporting passengers. Generally, as the relative change (decline) in income increased, reported compliance with mask wearing decreased (Spearman's rho = −0.15, p = 0.02). Taxi drivers have experienced marked decline in income due to the COVID‐19 pandemic, with implications for health practices and the maintenance of desired health behaviours. Authorities should be cognisant of the economic impact and COVID‐related consequences in the taxi industry, as they seek to develop COVID‐19 occupationally related prevention and control programmes. Objectives: This exploratory study examines workplace factors, sleep, sleep disorders, and safety among older (age 50 years and above) yellow taxi drivers in New York City (NYC) of South Asian descent.Methods: Using street intercept methods, quantitative data was collected among yellow taxi drivers in NYC (n = 27) from January-March 2020.Results: Among drivers, higher than normal sleepiness was identified in 33%, sleeping fewer than 7 hours on worknights work nights was reported by 52%, and 37% were at high risk for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Among drivers, 11% (n = 3) reported a motor vehicle accident in the past year and all drivers who reported an accident were at high risk for OSA.Conclusions: Findings from this hard-to-reach and understudied population revealed that most drivers did not report sufficient sleep on work nights. Results found over one-third of drivers had high OSA risk and drivers at high risk for OSA contributed to all reports of motor vehicle crashes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

AIM: The aim of the study is to find the prevalence of reduced upper cervical mobility and neck disability among taxi drivers. MATERIAL AND METHODOLOGY: An observational study was carried out among 120 taxi drivers in the age group of 40–50 years. The assessment was carried out using cervical flexion-rotation test and neck disability index (NDI) questionnaire to assess restriction in the cervical range of motion (ROM) and disability caused in the taxi drivers due to cervicogenic headache (CGH) respectively. RESULTS: The results revealed that 47.5% of taxi drivers have restriction in the cervical ROM whereas on NDI the taxi drivers had 18.33% of mild disability. Around 17.50% have reported moderate disability and 2.50% a severe neck disability. CONCLUSION: Thus to conclude the prevalence of reduced cervical mobility was high in taxi drivers that probably are due to long-term driving and bad posture. he prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders especially in low back and knee was high in taxi drivers that probably are due to long-term driving and bad posture. The disability could be prevented by education of correct sitting while driving, work station exercises, having sufficient rest in day and night and design of ergonomically seat based on Indian anthropometric sizes. • The study offers key policy insights into driver behavior under time pressure. • Each participant drove twice; the second with a reward for quicker completion. • Both groups exhibited riskier behaviors under time pressure than without it. • Significant differences in driving behavior and violations were observed between both groups. Drivers often encounter time pressure, which can lead to riskier driving habits, decreased safety margins, and a higher chance of accidents. Given that taxi drivers frequently experience these conditions, this study examines how time pressure impacts the driving behaviors of both taxi and non-professional drivers. In this regard, a driving simulator experiment was carried out to assess the driving behaviors of both groups under time pressure. The simulation drive included different scenarios such as a stop sign, a pedestrian crosswalk, four intersections, a school zone, a slow bus and a drop-off location. The study recruited 55 taxi drivers and 55 non-professional drivers to take part in the experiment. Each participant completed the simulation drive twice, with the second drive conducted after they were informed that a reward would be given for finishing the trip more quickly. The findings reveal that drivers exhibited significantly riskier behaviors under time pressure, including higher speeds and reduced adherence to traffic rules. When comparing both groups, non-professional drivers displayed higher speeds and riskier behaviors across various scenarios, whereas taxi drivers were more likely to commit violations associated with drop-offs. These findings call for targeted awareness campaigns and stricter enforcement to reduce risky behaviors under time pressure. Flexible scheduling for non-professional drivers and incentive programs for taxi drivers can further promote safer practices. Minibus taxis are the most accessible, convenient and affordable mode of public transport in South Africa. The abundance of commuters and taxi service employees contributes to waste generation and makes waste disposal practices challenging, especially when it comes to littering. This study's aim was to explore the perspectives of taxi drivers and commuters regarding littering. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 191 taxi drivers and commuters at four taxi ranks in two local municipalities in South Africa, using convenience and availability sampling. We utilised the lens of Vihersalo's environmental citizenship to formulate thematic categories of analysis to examine the responses received. This lens reveals a normative and descriptive account of environmental citizenship within the context of undesirable waste disposal practices related to taxi transportation. The study suggests that promoting environmental citizenship can contribute towards sustainability goals and environmental protection by encouraging participation in anti-littering behaviour. Background. Trade-offs are common behaviors of resilient systems, when the systems adapt to changing situations to meet multiple goals. Objective. In the context of the Beijing taxi service system (BTSS), this work investigates the sharp-end taxi drivers' trade-offs between work safety and business profitability, demonstrates their resilience in balancing these two goals and identifies factors that contribute to the trade-offs. Methods. An empirical framework incorporating questionnaire surveys, semi-structured interviews, field observation, data screening and categorization was adopted. Data were collected from a random sample of 70 taxi drivers. Results. In the drivers' decisions we found a slight bias in favor of profitability rather than safety (regardless of their finances), and a high level of resilience that the drivers had developed in making strategies for the trade-offs. Trip distance, possibility of traffic congestion, redundant consumption, weather conditions, road features and real-time broadcast information were identified as determinants of the drivers' decision-making. Conclusion. The findings inform BTSS organizational layers and regulators about the sharp-end drivers' needs for productive safety, and provide an evidence base for making more definitive recommendations about support provision and resource re-allocation in an effective and proactive manner. Objective This study sought to describe the knowledge and awareness of taxi drivers in Jamaica regarding COVID-19 and to identify socio-demographic correlates of knowledge. This study also examined the relationship between knowledge of COVID-19 and self-reported willingness to do a COVID-19 test. Methods In May 2020, a cross-sectional study was done among 282 taxi drivers in the Kingston and St. Andrew (KSA) metropolitan region in Jamaica. Data were collected using a 28-item anonymized self-administered questionnaire. Knowledge scores were generated and the differences in the mean ranks by socio-demographic variables were examined using the Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal Wallis tests. Logistic regression was used to identify independent predictors of willingness to do a COVID-19 test. Results Knowledge score ranged from 2 to 10 (highest possible score 10); median score = 9 (IQR=2). Approximately 83% expressed willingness to take a COVID-19 test. Binary logistic regression revealed that gender and knowledge score were independent predictors of willingness to take a COVID-19 test. With every unit increase in knowledge score, taxi drivers were 1.3 times more willing to take a COVID-19 test (OR 1.3, 95% CI: 1.09-1.55). Compared to males, females were less willing to take a COVID-19 test (OR 0.14, 95% CI: 0.025-0.716). Conclusion Taxi drivers had relatively high COVID-19-related knowledge scores. Improved knowledge may positively influence the adoption of COVID-19 prevention ‘technologies’ and the maintenance of desired behaviors among taxi drivers who collectively have a critical role to play in the reduction of COVID-19 transmission.

The occupation of taxi driving predisposes drivers to health risks, including obesity, cardiovascular and metabolic disorders. Although individual components of metabolic syndrome (MetS) are documented, data is scarce on concurrent metabolic disturbances among commercial drivers. The prevalence of MetS and its components were determined in a cross-sectional study among taxi drivers (n = 362) in the City of Tshwane, South Africa. Sociodemographic, occupational, and lifestyle factors were assessed using a structured questionnaire. Anthropometry, blood pressure, and glucose were measured. MetS was defined based on BMI strata, hypertension, and glucose levels. Data was analyzed using SPSS. The mean age of taxi drivers was 42 ± 10.9 years. Overall prevalence of MetS was 17.1%, with higher prevalence observed among older taxi drivers (24.2%) and those with longer experience in the industry (22.9%). Individual components of MetS were obesity (36%), hypertension (36%) and diabetes (46%), while smoking (30%), alcohol use (59%), and physical inactivity (71%) were observed. MetS was associated with duration in the taxi industry, and family history of diabetes among taxi drivers. The presence of MetS and its components among taxi drivers calls for early identification of cardiometabolic risks in the taxi industry and efforts towards achieving a healthier workforce. This article describes a critical literacy research project undertaken with English Additional Language students at a South African township school. Students were invited to take on the position of researchers in gathering and analysing bumper stickers found in commuter minibuses known as itekisi (taxi). These everyday texts in English and African languages are salient for the students' discourse communities. Bringing them into English lessons validates the use of languages and discourses that multilingual students inhabit and draws on their ability to move fluidly between languages. Framed by critical discourse analysis theory, this project aimed to facilitate students' abilities to develop and use critical literacy knowledge and skills in analysing taxi bumper stickers. The findings indicate that the students were able to demonstrate some criticality as they investigated multiple interpretations of the texts by community members and themselves. Inviting students to investigate texts drawn from their own communities was envisaged as enabling their development as critical readers with a social justice orientation to texts. However, their relentless negativity towards taxi drivers made it difficult for them to keep their focus on the texts, suggesting that teachers' selection of salient texts for lessons with a focus on critical literacy may not always achieve the intended outcomes.
