This article studies the presence of infotainment style in the evening news programs of the Big Three Russian TV channels: Channel One, Russia-1, and NTV. Infotainment is not only understood as a focus on specific topics such as scandals and show business, but also as an effort to make information programs more engaging and visually dynamic. First, we establish conceptual definitions for infotainment and infotainment topics. Subsequently, we analyze the evening news broadcasts of the three channels aired between March 2021 and September 2023, using selected parameters. The survey reveals that while infotainment style is present in the evening television news, it is not a typical characteristic. Only one of the studied TV channels covered news related to celebrities, and diversification in news format was observed on just two of the analyzed channels. The findings indicate that, at least within the Russian television system, there is no direct correlation between the form of media ownership and the adoption of an infotainment style in the evening news. It can be hypothesized that the personal and professional characteristics of editorial staff members play a significant role in the utilization of infotainment. However, this aspect requires further investigation. Additionally, the survey demonstrates that there is no correlation between program ratings and the presence of infotainment within them.

Clickbait has been widely studied within the online news headline context; however, it is still understudied under the umbrella of transcreation. By employing the theory of transcreation by Gaballo (2012) and news headline tabloidization/clickbaiting presentation by Reinemann et al. (2012) on a corpus of online news headlines in a qualitative research design, we argued that news headline is transcreated for a clickbaiting purpose through the use particular linguistic features as the strategies. Those linguistic features are bombasting, referencing, and bamboozling. The first refers to the use of high-sounding or hyperbolic expressions, the second to popular references, and the last to multi-interpretable expressions. Each of the three transcreation strategies has what we call the degree of transferability. Through the degree of transferability, whether or not a translated online news headline might fall into the category of translation, transcreation, or in between could be revealed. The degrees of transferability might also reveal how bombasting, referencing, and bamboozling influence the categorization. The findings of the study could be employed as a guideline for news translation scholars and practitioners in reviewing and assessing the translation of online news headlines regarding the tendency of the tabloidization use in the clickbait context. Future studies could address the issues of the identities of news sites, news sites, and news readers as a parameter in assessing the quality of news headline translation or transcreation.

ELECTRONIC newspapers ,TRANSLATING & interpreting ,PRIMARY audience - Abstract
This article aims to analyse the role of translation in the tabloidization of the New York Times in Spanish. Drawing on the findings of a previous study that compared the English, Chinese and Spanish versions of the online newspaper, I hypothesise that the Spanish version focuses on human-interest news items translated from English originals and, therefore, translation may be used in a tabloidization process of the source texts in order to cater for the needs of the target audiences, that is, Spanish speakers of Spanish-speaking origin living in the United States or in Latin America. To study the process, I gathered two constructed weeks, a methodology widely used in communication studies, to analyse the differences between the two versions both in terms of content and format. The analysis, shows a tendency towards the 'diminution of seriousness', which can be explained as the result of the attempts to attract a readership belonging to different news traditions. Americanization ,tabloidization ,Communication. Mass media ,P87-96 - Abstract
In the last couple of decades various scholars have signaled the occurrence and development of important processes in political communication. If some have broadly coined these transformations as “Americanization” (Negrine & Papathanassopoulos, 1996; Scammel, 1998), “professionalization” (Blumler & Kavanaugh, 1999; Strömbäck, 2008; Stamper & Brants, 2011), “tabloidization” (Barnett, 1998; Connell, 1998; Klein, 1996) or “infotainment”, (Street, 2000; 2001), others have associated them with terms such as “video malaise” (Robinson, 1976) or “spectatorship democracy” (De Beus, 2011). According to these views, political journalism nowadays has stepped into a new era, in which the coverage of political events and television programming itself are heading towards an entertainment logic. Rosa Van Santen’s work addresses all of these issues and represents a very valuable contribution to assessing these hypotheses.

This article uses qualitative and quantitative methods to analyse the entire corpus of news articles published about North Korea by six major UK national newspapers from 2000 to 2020. It offers insights on how North Korea evolved from a relatively obscure subject to a mainstay in the world news section, particularly for the tabloids. Coverage grew exponentially, led by not only stories about nuclear development and missile programmes, but also by soft news items like football, and tourism. Notably, the tone of coverage shifted after Kim Jong-un came to power in 2011, leading to an explosion of stories focussed on the young leader and his family. Structural topic modelling reveals 12 key topic areas among elite and tabloid media. While elite media coverage spanned a wider range of subjects, tabloid media largely focussed on three topics: missiles, the Kim family, and football. Each theme was highly compatible with the traditions of tabloid coverage, supplying eye-catching images (missiles and Kim's eccentric appearance), a 'royal family' of sorts, and sports (North Koreans' feats during World Cup). Furthermore, qualitative analysis demonstrates that while tabloidization and sensationalistic reporting on the Kim family largely drove the increase in coverage, such stories also added colour and depth previously lacking in reportage on the enemy regime, thereby making the portrayal of North Korea more multidimensional. The paper problematizes substantial presence of black chronicle in print media reporting. Through a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the content of ten daily newspapers in Serbia, we researched genre characteristics and editorial policies used in presenting the content from the black chronicle segment. It can be seen that daily newspapers on a large-scale deal with the topic of violence and death, but also that the reporting quality does not correspond to the quantity of the published texts. Looking at the content, it can be concluded that serious daily press invests certain efforts in the maintenance of professional standards of the journalist profession, unlike tabloids that dominate the media space. During the analyzed time interval, there was almost not a single day when tabloids, on the pages reserved for the content from the black chronicle segment, did not reveal some details related to the lives of victims, possible perpetrators of criminal acts, as well as other actors, along with the observed violations of the rules of journalist ethics. Therefore, it is necessary to work on emancipation in two directions, towards greater responsibility of editorial staff, editors and journalists, and towards stronger media literacy of the public itself.

- Abstract
In 2017 a 17-year-old girl called Wilma Andersson went missing in the Swedish town Uddevalla. A few weeks later the police made a discovery that confirmed that she was dead. Her former boyfriend Tishko Ahmed was prosecuted and convicted for her murder and sentenced to 18 years in prison. The murder of Wilma Andersson is a murder case that touched a lot of people and was very big in Swedish news media. This study ́s purpose was to investigate how tabloidization effect crime journalism. Four research questions were asked in order to investigate this. The questions were: 1. How is Wilma Andersson framed in Aftonbladet and Dagens Nyheter? 2. How is Tishko Ahmed framed in Aftonbladet and Dagens Nyheter? 3. What similarities and differences are there in how Wilma Andersson and Tishko Ahmed are framed in Aftonbladet and Dagens Nyheter? 3a. How does tabloidization effect the framing and the crime journalism? The results of this study show that Wilma Andersson is framed as an innocent, kind and orderly girl by the tabloid paper Aftonbladet. The findings also show that Aftonbladet framed the perpetrator, Tishko Ahmed, in several ways. He is framed as a normal guy that no one thought would be capable of murder, but he is also framed as a violent boyfriend and mentally unstable. The broad sheet paper, Dagens Nyheter, framed Wilma Andersson as a vulnerable girl who had a difficult life situation and the perpetrator Tishko was framed as mentally unstable and unreliable. The result of the study show that the tabloid newspaper framed the victim and perpetrator in a more personal and dramatic way by using writing technique and personal sources. The tabloid newspaper also used pictures more than the broad sheet, which empathized the dramatic and personal framing. The findings in this study show that tabloidization effect crime journalism by making it more dramatic and entertaining in order to attract readers and make money.

This study examined whether the headlines of newspapers in South Korea and the New York Times differed in terms of the semantic function – that is, summarizing news stories and the pragmatic function – that is, attracting readers' attention. The New York Times is regarded as one of the news organizations that practices quality journalism, yet it also faces the pressure of market-driven journalism that focuses more on financial interests than the public interest. News organizations, popular as well as quality newspapers, have become unprecedentedly competitive in the new media context, pressured to increase audience attention, possibly influencing quality papers to emphasize the pragmatic function of attracting audiences by employing more sensational headlines. A content analysis of 749 news articles, which compared 10 newspapers in South Korea with the New York Times in the United States, showed that newspapers in South Korea more frequently employed headlines that highlighted the pragmatic function. Specifically, this study operationalized the semantic function to include headlines with factual information – that is, Who, When, Where, What, Why, and How – while the pragmatic function measured the extent to which headlines included four attracting devices – metaphors, adverbs, direct quotations, and questions. Findings of this study showed that only 4.9 percent of the headlines included more than four items of factual information among the Who, When, Where, What, Why, and How, whereas 74.9 percent of the headlines included more than one attracting device. Compared to the New York Times, the Korean newspapers were more likely to employ adverbs and direct quotations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work is focused on reporting of daily newspapers in Serbia during coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, and specifics of dominant narratives and relationship between the government and popular press. The content research includes the first half of 2020, when 1,271 from eight influential daily papers were analysed. While the representatives of the quality press have tried to steer the attention of citizens and introduce serious questions most tabloids trivialised the danger as another spectacle which will secure larger sales irrespective of social consequences and ethical norms of journalistic profession. Objectivity and unbiasedness are sacrificed for sensationalism, spectacle and political clientelism. Celebritization of medical profession has only led to spread of confusion in public opinion, while revealing how political elites eagerly use crisis for promotion of their own ideas and programs, instead of professional debate.

Tarihin her döneminde "gerçeküstü" olana ilgi gösterilmiştir.

The present study collected 2223 tweets of news about the Top 100 celebrities from People Magazine's Twitter account during the year 2016. A combination of content analysis and social network analysis was used to examine celebrity attributes, news features, and the relationships between celebrities and news topics. Results indicated that news agendas and audiences' responses were highly different. News coverage was primarily determined by news features, yet audiences cared only about big stars. Regular topics centered on the themes of celebrity news. The celebrity-by-topic network was topic-driven rather than human-driven, demonstrating the nature of the celebrity industry as an embodiment of capitalist society. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Researching the impact of populist political communication on media, art, and the cultural sphere in Serbia, the authors investigate various different phenomena that are rising under the pretext of market liberalisation and identity politics. Deregulation of media may have brought "independence" from power, but also complete market-dependence. In the cultural sphere, pressures on the arts from rightwing populism have lead to extreme nationalism in Serbian media and cultural practices while simultaneously seeing a commercialisation of programming. "National discussions" regarding the status of reality show programmes on commercial television and accusations of anti-patriotism against most prominent Serbian artists have been lead by right-wing populists. At the same time, this research takes into account several forms of left-wing populism, mostly developed within the independent scene. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

TABLOID newspapers ,NEWS gathering ,CONTENT analysis - Abstract
The term tabloidization describes the spillover of tabloid journalism's characteristics – which aim to attract recipients' attention – to other media types, particularly elite media. The validity of the common assumption that tabloidization has increased over the last decades is unknown since long-term studies are widely lacking. Applying a most similar systems design, the current study pursues several goals: On the macro-level, it aims to clarify whether campaign coverage of seven German and Austrian elite newspapers has become more tabloidized over six decades (1949–2009) and whether the long-term developments are related to three structural drivers of tabloidization – tabloid newspapers, commercial television, and the Internet. On the meso-level, the study investigates among outlet differences in tabloidization. Tabloidization is conceptualized as multidimensional, considering the topic, focus, and style dimension. The results show that tabloidization in general and in the single newspapers has increased, but only slightly and only in a few respects. While some of the hypothesized structural influences on tabloidization are confirmed, other, more situative drivers of tabloidization seem to account for short-term ups and downs in levels of tabloidization. Based on a qualitative survey (comprised of interviews with 42 journalists) in French and German mainstream media (print and TV), this article aims to compare the effect of the digitalization process on editorial choices and journalistic roles concerning crime news. Crime news appears to be particularly revealing of the new journalistic constraints: tabloidization and high-speed publishing, but without jeopardizing the ethical requirements of an ongoing legal investigation. Three main changes can be identified, namely regarding (a) the use of social media and its audience as a legitimate source and as a key factor of newsworthiness, (b) the importance granted to online metrics for planning media content and editorial meetings, and (c) the transition observed toward the “online-first model,” which encourages journalists to publish all content online first, updating it to the minute before any print publication. The article first underlines the importance of the digital conversion of newsrooms. Interviewees point out that this pressure has counterintuitive effects, giving them room for autonomy and journalistic creativity in crime news reporting. Finally, and more worryingly for them, journalists are concerned that their professional practices may be undermined, since the online-first model has affected the organization of newsrooms and the structure of the media market in both countries. This structural process is somehow stronger in France than in Germany, but this is more a matter of degree than of structural model differences.

POLITICAL news coverage , *BUSINESS journalism , *SUPERIOR courts , *LANDSCAPE changes , *ECONOMIC change , *NEWSPAPERS - Abstract
This article aims to relate the changes in the economic landscape of journalism to the political process itself. We will do this through two distinct moments: first, by establishing relations between the political preferences of newspaper readers in Rio de Janeiro and their reading habits; then evaluating the political coverage of newspapers through a frame analysis. Using Sparks' (2000) model of tabloidization as a starting point, we sought to develop a matrix that evaluates the news coverage of three newspapers from Rio de Janeiro: O Globo, Extra, and Meia Hora. More than two thousand headlines and first page summary texts from these newspapers were analyzed in the period between July and October 2014, corresponding to the period of electoral propaganda, as defined by the Superior Electoral Court. The next step was to relate these categories back to the readers' profile of the newspapers analyzed and their political preferences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

At the turn of the 1990s to the 2000s, a debate on an alleged "tabloidization" of the European press took academic research on journalism, especially since the works of Esser (1999) and Sparks & Tulloch (2000), which sought to conceptualize the term. The academic literature since then has dealt with the subject in different settings and contexts around the world (cf. PIONTEK, 2011; MOONEY, 2008; LIMA, 2009). In Brazil, however, there were few efforts in order to deepen the knowledge on tabloid genre. The main purpose of this article is to characterize the phenomenon as it appears in the Brazilian market, comparing the performance of tabloids to what authors like Wasserman (2010), Ogola & Rodny-Gumede (2014) and Ranganathan & Rodrigues (2010) have observed in countries like India and South Africa.

Information technologies, with their explosive growth and stunning effects, provided the definitive seal the emergence of a new era of knowledge. They created an infrastructure for rapid exchange of information and facilitate the accelerated globalization of world markets, new organizational forms and methods of communication and work. Progress in information and telecommunication technologies has enabled the processing, storing, receiving and sending information in almost any possible shape, regardless of distance, time, volume and with less cost. In today strongly interconnected world, resources such as creativity and innovation have become the most important in relation to all the others. The new rules apply, globally, and at the micro and macro level. The problem of the lack of ethics and fall of competence, reputation and the confidence of the public in the media, is the perennial problem of Serbian media space. The general tabloidization society, the decline in the quality of the media supply, with an increase in the number of tabloid media, along with the simultaneous appearance of that tabloid elements acquire even the media who had been in force for relevant, high-quality and serious feature is the most important characteristics the media-sphere in Serbia. Rating and circulation are the most important and creativity is usually put into operation profits media owners, holders of political and/or economic power. Creative efforts can be seen in radio and television public service but they, like most cultural events, are of secondary importance (for other programs). While in Serbia, still, as in the region can not live fully in the information age, the importance of creative cultural, media flows of design knowledge, information and creativity is cause for reflection on this topic, in order to explain and understand the changes which we are witnesses and those to come.

Dijitalleşmenin kavga, çatışma, sömürü, eğlence, istismar gibi içeriklerin üretilmesini hızlandırdığı, yurttaş gazeteciliğinin devreye girmesiyle vatandaşların da tabloidleşmeye katkı sunduğu görülmüştür., It is possible to summarize the historical process of television broadcasting in Turkey in three separate sections: Public broadcasting, private televisions and the digital process experienced today. While the responsibility of informing the public was at the forefront in the period of public broadcasting, entertainment programs, sensational journalism, as well as tabloidization of outgoing news became the style that determined this period with the emergence of private television channels. The invasion operation launched by Russia on Ukraine on 24.02.2022 offers examples of tabloidization of the news in the main news bulletins. The premise of this study is that when it comes to news that affects the public, the framing of the news in public broadcasting and private broadcasting is different from each other. Today, when digitalization has come to the fore, news value has changed and tabloidization has increased. The change in news value and increasing tabloidization with digitalization is a case that allows research, questioning and making scientific inferences. Show TV, FOX TV and TRT 1 main news bulletins were subjected to a qualitative content analysis and it was concluded that digitalization also caused a change in news value. It has been determined that private televisions do not give up tabloid journalism even in periods of extraordinary developments, and tabloid news are less preferred in public broadcasting. It has been seen that digitalization accelerates the production of content such as fight, conflict, exploitation, entertainment and abuse, and citizens also contribute to tabloidization with the introduction of citizen journalism.

MASS media , *MODERN society , *CULTURAL industries , *POLITICAL communication , *COMMUNICATION - Abstract
The author deals with the issue of stronger tabloidization of the so-called quality media and political scene in post-millennial years. She points to the acceptance of tabloidization processes in conditions of late modern societies and in the chaos of postmodern cultures. She presents and illuminates the processes that determine formation of the mental atmosphere in the first and second decades of the new millennium. According to her, these are in particular creation of a new cultural logic and a change of media logic. New cultural logic is formed under the influence of a dramatic expansion of the cultural industry and popular cultural forms, when the boundaries between high, mass or commercial cultures disappear. Media logic reproduces the developmental trends in the field of commercial popular culture and mental settings of socioculture. It establishes a set of rules, procedures and standards that comply with the possibilities and interests of media subjects. The tendency for the changes of both processes could be observed in the last two decades of the twentieth century. However, in the new century it is possible to clearly and fully identify their consequences in the communication practices of the so-called quality media subjects, as well as in the field of communication between political subjects and public. The author describes and analyses selected communication situations that can define the main features of the tabloidization process of the so-called quality media. At the same time, she also defines the most commonly used strategies and tactics of media players to reach out to their target audiences. In their context, she also analyses tabloidization processes of political subjects. In the paper the author states that the processes of tabloidization of media and political scene are two interrelated and conditioned phenomena. With them media pursue their commercial interests, including increasing media market share and political subjects attracting attention of media and the public. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We live in a digital era, a period when information travels with fulminant speed and goes from one side of the world to the other in only a few minutes. The general interest information has a strong impact on the mankind and is transmitted rapidly especially through the internet and through news televisions, which take over the information directly from the area where the event occurs or by the intermediary of other media channels, such as news agencies or other TV stations. Therefore, it is extremely important for the journalists to grant a particular importance to the research of a piece of news before broadcasting it as news alert or breaking news and to analyze the impact that the information has on the audience. This because, at present, we reached the situation of creating 10-12 breaking news per day, fact that leads to a decline in journalists’ credibility and it can cast ridicule on the journalist concepts of breaking news or news alert.

Gawker ignited a controversy when it published an article about a married Conde Nast executive who allegedly sought the services of a gay escort. The popular blog eventually removed the article following condemnation from readers and other journalists. Guided by the frameworks of boundary work and field theory, this study analyzed 65 news articles and 2203 online comments and found that journalists and audiences problematized Gawker's identity as a journalistic organization and evaluated the article based on traditional standards of newsworthiness, audiences asserted their role in journalism's larger interpretive community, and that the larger interpretive community assessed the article based on the ethics of outing. Investigating the discourse generated by this critical incident is important because it identifies where journalists and readers draw the boundaries of legitimate journalism, specifies the place of ethics in boundary discourse, and informs journalistic practice about the phenomenon of outing in the news. Exemplified by the landmark trial of O.J. Simpson, news media coverage of criminal cases in the United States is now regularly dominated by tabloid style coverage, complete with fixation on the victims and accused in criminal cases. Investigators have shown that such coverage of criminal proceedings is linked to decreasing levels of public trust and confidence in the criminal justice system. What is not yet understood is how rapid changes to the media universe in terms of online news sources and social networking are impacting coverage of criminal proceedings and public understanding of the criminal justice system. By surveying the American public on their news consumption habits, participation in social networking, knowledge and opinions of highly publicized criminal cases, and perceptions of the legitimacy of the justice system, we offer one of the first analyses of social media’s impact on public interaction with the criminal justice system. Ultimately we find little evidence that social media is enhancing citizen knowledge about or confidence in the criminal justice system, but we do uncover strong evidence that social media engagement with criminal trials leads to a greater desire for vengeance and encouragement of vigilante attitudes and behavior. Despite the scholarly popularity of important developments of political communication, concepts like soft news or infotainment lack conceptual clarity. This article tackles that problem and introduces a multilevel framework model of softening of journalistic political communication, which shows that the 4 most prominent concepts-(a) sensationalism, (b) hard and soft news ( HSN), (c) infotainment, and (d) tabloidization, and, additionally, (e) eroding of boundaries of journalism-can be distinguished in a hierarchical model. By softening, we understand a metaconcept representing developments in political journalism that are observed on different levels of investigation, from journalism as a system (macrolevel) down to single media items (microlevel). EMIGRATION & immigration , *PUBLIC relations in newspaper publishing , *SENSATIONALISM in journalism , *OBJECTIVITY in journalism , *CONTENT analysis - Abstract
Public and commercial news follow distinct logics. We evaluate this duality in television news coverage on immigration. First, by means of a large-scale content analysis of Flemish television news (N = 1630), we investigate whether immigration coverage diverges between both broadcasters. Results show that, despite an overall negativity bias and relative homogeneity between the broadcasters, commercial news contains slightly more sensational and tabloid characteristics than public news. The latter promotes a more balanced view of immigration. These differences are stable over time. Second, using cross-sectional and panel data, we assess whether a preference for public versus commercial news is associated with an attitudinal gap in anti-immigrant attitudes. Findings demonstrate that individuals who prefer commercial news are more negative towards immigrants. We suggest that differences in news content may explain this attitudinal gap. In light of the debate around ‘public value’ offered by public service media across Europe, we tentatively conclude that public broadcasters have the potential to foster tolerance and provide balanced information by prioritizing a normative view over a market logic. The linkage between news coverage and the gap in attitudes between commercial and public news viewers warrants closer investigation in the future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article critically studies the hegemonic discursive construction of the EU’s current (2012) economic crisis, as it is articulated by political and economic elites and by mass media. The study focuses on the political economy of the particular crisis and through the critical concept of reification, the study emphasizes the hegemonic naturalization of the economic crisis by the “free market” economistic ideology. The article problematizes the positioning of Greece as the “crisis epicentre” in Europe, understanding Greece as a scapegoat and as a laboratory where political strategies of capitalist restructuring of the EU are performed. Through the frame analysis of Bild-zeitung’s headlines on the coverage of crisis-struck Greece, the article discusses a) the “culturalization” of the crisis and the diversion from a structural public debate on the global economic crisis b) the disciplinary function of crisis’ publicity, related to social control and the production of new, neoliberal social subjectivities c) the alienating effect of the culturalist crisis discourses to transnational publics, resulting to the misrecognition of the ideological and structural reasons of the given crisis, the misrecognition of the effects of the crisis and crisis-politics in people’s lives, the misrecognition of popular socio-political struggles in countries worse struck by crisis politics, and the eclipse of transnational solidarity and identification to the common issues that European people in particular are facing.

Although considerable efforts have studied online news, studies so far have not investigated how the actual news topics are affected by digitalization in general, if at all, or compared them to different media constructs. Instead, changes in content are assumed or illustrated anecdotally rather than systematically assessed. This empirical study, covering Swedish and UK news sites within tabloid, quality morning, and local/regional varieties between 2002 and 2012, shows that there is a tabloidization effect in general but that it is stronger in tabloids and in Sweden compared to the UK. Further, this tabloidization can be more precisely described as a shift from political to more lifestyle journalism, as it is in the areas where the prime growth and decline are found. In addition, the study reveals that it is the slower news that increases most suggesting that the immediate character of online news is mediated by production conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In a context marked by technological uncertainty and the search for a viable business model, the digital media have succumbed to various strategies to attract audience, reflected in the clicks generated by each reader. This article focuses attention on a reference newspaper as El País, to discuss what options were incorporated in order to attract visitors to the website. By using a quantitative and qualitative methodology, a study was carried out on four sections added by Elpais.com in the last two years: SModa, Icon, BuenaVida and Verne, which have generated significant traffic, particularly the latter. The conclusions of the analysis show a commitment to tabloidization, with anecdotal, lifestyle or curiosity content, while the so-called hard news is absent from these new sections. This circumstance coincides with headlines that have some characteristic features of the popular press, which act more as bait to capture the curiosity - and also generate income each time they are clicked on - rather than as informative elements. The fragmentation of the texts, and their list-style structure, mimic the success of some native digital media, while moving away from the standards of the quality press. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CRIMINAL justice system , *CRIMINAL law , *RADICALISM , *POPULISM ,HUNGARIAN politics & government - Abstract
Penal populism, advocating severe punishment of criminals, has greatly influenced justice policy measures in Eastern Europe over the last decade. This article takes Hungary as a typical case in the region and based on a recent criminal policy reform it investigates the roots of the penal populist discourse, which legitimizes and supports punitive measures. The research assumes that policy discourses need specific social actors that construct and promote them. Accordingly, the article explores whether the right-wing political parties and the tabloid media have taken a leading role in constructing the discourse of penal populism as a response to public concerns about crime. Content analysis and frame analysis of political communication and media was conducted to identify the discursive positions of major political parties and selected national media sources. The research found that penal populism was dominant in Hungarian political discourse while most of the media, including the tabloid press, have been rather reluctant to adopt punitive tones. The results thus contradict previous findings and offer a more nuanced view on how penal populism is being constructed and promoted in Eastern Europe. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
In times of crises such as pandemics, wars or natural disasters, the responsibility of the news media increases. Previous research has shown that people in crisis tend to seek information in traditional media and find it the most reliable source. Today's media landscape has faced a new paradigm shift in the form of digitalization that has had an extensive impact on society and information is now more easily available to the public. As a result, this study will examine the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic with a focus on vaccination, which has received strong media attention in Sweden. The purpose of this study is to contribute with new research by analyzing how Sweden's largest morning newspaper Dagens Nyheter and the largest evening newspaper Aftonbladet communicated regarding the COVID-19 vaccine. The study's four research questions aim to investigate whether there are any differences or similarities in how Aftonbladet and Dagens Nyheter communicated through source power, tabloidization, and dimensions from previous research: RQ1. How does Aftonbladet and Dagens Nyheter use and mention sources in their articles RQ2. How are the articles conducted in Aftonbladet and Dagens Nyheter regarding focus dimensions (societal or individual, episodic or thematic)? RQ3. How are the articles conducted in Aftonbladet and Dagens Nyheter regarding style dimensions (personal or impersonal, emotional or unemotional)? RQ4. Do the articles in Aftonbladet and Dagens Nyheter have tendencies of tabloidization based on the content and headline (positive or negative, match between headline and text)? To answer the four research questions, a quantitative content analysis has been used by analyzing a total of 200 newspaper articles over a six-month period. With assistance of the tool Retriever, 100 articles from each newspaper were retrieved and produced through an unbound random selection. With help of the designed code sheet and the code book the units have been analyzed in SPSS. RQ3.
