Abstract Studies have shown that the co-occurrence of diabetes mellitus (DM) and thyroid dysfunction (TD) exacerbates diabetes complications and imposes a financial burden on the healthcare system. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the prevalence of TD-DM comorbidity and its associated risk factors. This cross-sectional study was conducted on enrollment phase data of the TABARI cohort population which consisted of 10,255 adults aged between 35 to 70 years old residing in Sari, Mazandaran, Iran from 2015 to 2017. A total of 9939 out of 10,255 individuals (96.92%) entered the study. The prevalence of TD among T2DM patients was 13.2%. The prevalence of T2DM among patients with TD was 9.2%. Furthermore, the prevalence of TD-DM comorbidity in the overall population was 2.2%. Logistic regression analysis revealed that the odds of TD-DM comorbidity was significantly higher in women (OR 2.85; 95% CI 1.58–5.11), in the age group of 60–70 years (OR 9.62; 95% CI 3.69–25.10), in smokers (OR 2.32; 95% CI 1.19–4.52), in individuals with high waist circumference (WC) (OR 2.22; 95% CI 1.32–3.75), in individuals with low high-density lipoprotein (HDL) (OR 1.60; 95% CI 1.20–2.14), in individuals with high total cholesterol (TC) (OR 1.71; 95% CI 1.21–2.41), in individuals with high triglycerides (TG) (OR 1.79; 95% CI 1.27–2.51), and significantly lower in individuals with higher physical activity (PA) (OR 0.67; 95% CI 0.49–0.93). The present study demonstrated a prevalence of 2.2% in patients with both TD and T2DM. Additionally, female gender, older age, smoking, high WC, low HDL, high TC, high TG, and low PA were predictors of TD-DM comorbidity.

Background and purpose: The prevalence of metabolic syndrome in societies is increasing. Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of medical conditions that include obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and insulin resistance. Poor dental care is linked to numerous systemic disorders. Scientific research supports the presence of a relationship between oral hygiene and metabolic syndrome. Therefore, the present study was conducted to determine the relationship between oral hygiene based on DMFT (decayed, missing, filled teeth) and metabolic syndrome in the registration phase data of the Tabari cohort population. Materials and methods: This study was cross-sectional and analytical and included participants from the Tabari cohort population who had performed oral health and metabolic syndrome assessments during the registration phase. Throughout the registration period of the Tabari cohort study (TCS), data was gathered from 10255 individuals ranging from 35 to 70 years old. This data was obtained from both urban and mountainous parts of Sari, Mazandaran, Iran, during the years 2015 and 2017. Data regarding education level, occupation status, residential location, socio-economic status, marital status, mental health history, smoking or hookah habits, daily physical activity, dental hygiene practices (such as tooth brushing and flossing frequency), denture usage and care, mouthwash usage, and DMFT index were gathered during the implementation of TCS through interviews and oral examinations. Metabolic syndrome was diagnosed based on the criteria of the third adult treatment panel (ATP III). Ultimately, SPSS version 27 software was utilized to describe the data using mean, standard deviation, and percentage. The qualitative variables were compared with the metabolic syndrome using the chi-square test, while the quantitative variables were compared using the independent t-test in univariate analysis. Furthermore, the process of adjusting for confounding variables was carried out through the utilization of multivariate logistic regression. Results: 9,939 people were included in the final analysis. Independent T-test result showed that there was no significant relationship between metabolic syndrome and DMFT (P=0.156, T=4.59), so the average DMFT in the group with metabolic syndrome was 17.66±9.07, whereas in the non-affected group, it was 16.81±8.99. Based on chisquare test results, significant relationships with metabolic syndrome were found for the use of dentures (P<0.001), use of dental floss (P<0.001), age (P<0.001), gender (P<0.001), marital status (P=0.05), occupation (P<0.001), place of residence (P<0.001), psychiatric disorders (P<0.001), socio-economic status (P=0.005), smoking (P<0.001), BMI (P<0.001), MET (P<0.001), and education level (P<0.001). Upon adjustment of confounders in the multivariable logistic regression model, only the number of flossing twice a day was significantly associated with metabolic syndrome (OR 1.493 [95% CI 1.008-2.213], P=0.046). Conclusion: The findings of this study showed that there is no significant relationship between oral and dental hygiene measured by the DMFT index and the presence of metabolic syndrome in the population registration stage data of the Tabari cohort. There was a significant relationship identified alone between flossing twice daily and metabolic syndrome. Recognizing warning signs and taking necessary measures are effective in preventing the disease and its complications. We used the logistic regression model to determine the factors affecting blood pressure based on the results of the Tabari Cohort Study. Materials and methods: This cross-sectional descriptive-analytical study was conducted in people older than 35 years old in Sari, whose information (demographic and anthropometric characteristics, and risk factors) was available at the Tabari Cohort Center in Mazandaran province. Logistic regression model was used to determine the factors affecting hypertension. We did statistical analyses using SPSS V26. Results: The participants included 6622 people (41.3% men) with an average age of 48.97±8.94 years old. There were 1481 people with high blood pressure (22.4%). Abstract Background Insomnia and other sleep disorders can cause an increase in blood pressure, thereby resulting in premature death. Regarding this, the present study was conducted to investigate the relationship between hypertension and parameters related to sleep disorders in Tabari cohort population. Methods In this cross-sectional study, the data from the enrollment phase of the Tabari cohort study were adopted. Tabari cohort is a part of the PERSIAN (Prospective Epidemiological Research Studies in Iran) cohort study. Data analysis was performed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results Out of 10,255 patients enrolled in the Tabari cohort, 2,281 patients (22.2%) had hypertension. According to the results of univariable logistic regression test, the odds ratio of high blood pressure in patients with insomnia and hypersomnia is 1.22 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.06–1.40) and 1.22 (95% CI, 1.01–1.47) times higher than normal sleep. This odds ratio was not significant after adjusting the effect of sex, age, body mass index, waist circumference, area residence, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglyceride, and total cholesterol variables with multivariable logistic regression. Background and purpose: Red Cell Distribution Width (RDW) is a parameter that measures changes in red blood cell size reported in a complete blood count test. In this study, we aimed to identify the association between RDW and hypertension in Tabari cohort population. Materials and methods: In this case-control study, case group included all patients with hypertension (n= 2281) participating in Tabari Cohort Study with systolic and diastolic blood pressures more than or equal to 140 and 90, respectively, or those previously diagnosed with hypertension who received antihypertensive drugs. The control group was randomly selected from the Tabari cohort population and matched for sex, age and body mass index. Finally, 2227 people were included in each group. Blood samples were taken from all participants after 12 hours of fasting. Results: Findings showed significant differences between the two groups in all variables studied, including place of residence, level of education, socio-economic status, waist circumference, smoking, and cholesterol level (P0.05). Conclusion: Our study showed that RDW has no predictive role in hypertension and there is no significant pattern between the range of RDW and hypertension.

Background: This study aims to investigate the situation of sleep profile and its related factors in the Tabari Cohort Tabari (TCS) population. Methods: The information of 10255 of the Tabari cohort population in the enrolment phase was used in this study. The sleep profile data was collected and recorded by trained questioners. The sleep duration in day & night, the time interval between going bed and falling asleep, continuous use of sedatives, involuntary nap, limb hypermobility during sleep and shift working were determined for each person. Data analysis was performed by independent T test and Pearson correlation coefficient. Results: Mean, standard deviation, median, minimum and maximum of sleep duration in this population were 7.6, 1.6, 7.5, 0.5 and 17 h. Frequency of sleeping less than 6 h, 6–10 h and more than 10 h were 1168(11.4%), 8463(82.5%) and 624(6.1%) respectively. The frequency of exposure to smoking in the home, at present or in the past, in the entire population was 30.5%, and in the populations living in urban and mountainous areas were 35.4% and 19.8%, respectively (P < 0.001). The mean age at first use of cigarettes in the entire population was 20.50 ± 7.61, whereas the mean age of regular smoking was 23.19 ± 8.02. Furthermore, the frequency of experiencing drug abuse in the total population was 6.1%, and the frequencies in men and women were 14.1% and 0.7%, respectively. Conclusion: According to the results of this study, cigarette smoking and drug use are significant in men, and overall exposure of the Tabari cohort population to tobacco and drugs in the home is high. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Identification of cancer risk factors in the community and prevention planning in high-risk groups can be helpful in cancer prevention program. Hence, the aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between reproductive factors and breast cancer in the Tabari population-based cohort study in a case-control design. METHODS: This case-control study was performed on the enrolment phase of the Tabari population-based cohort. Patients with breast cancer were considered as case group (51) and non-cancerous individuals (204) as a control group. The two groups were matched based on age category and oral contraceptive pill (OCP) intake. The studied variables included breast cancer history, demographic and reproductive factors. FINDINGS: Mean age of first pregnancy (22.76±4.99 vs. 20.8±4.16, p=0.005), mean age at first birth (23.57±4.94 vs. 21.66±4.07, p=0.006) and age of marriage (22.24±5.75 vs. 19.54±4.92, p=0.001) in the case group were significantly higher than the control group and the number of pregnancies (3.76±2.22 vs. 4.67±2.76, p=0.032) and number of children (3.27±1.97 vs. 4.16±2.44, p=0.019) in the case group was significantly less than the control group. According to multivariate analysis, the odds of incidence of breast cancer in people with first pregnancy over 22 years was 2.76 times more than (p= 0.027) those with first pregnancy age below 22 years. Background: The Tabari cohort study (TCS), part of the Prospective Epidemiological Research Studies in IrAN (PERSIAN), is a large longitudinal prospective cohort designed to better understand the risk factors associated with major non-communicable diseases (NCDs) across two urban and mountainous regions in north of Iran. Methods: The enrollment phase of TCS started in June 2015 and ended in November 2017. During this phase, individuals aged 35--70 years from urban and mountainous regions of Sari township (Mazandaran province) were invited to the cohort center by health volunteers (urban regions) and Behvarz (mountainous areas) using census information. Data was collected based on the PERSIAN cohort study protocols. Hypertension was defind as systolic blood pressure ≥140 mm Hg or a diastolic blood pressure ≥90 mm Hg or history of diagnosis with hypertension or taking antihypertensive medications among participants free from cardiovascular diseases. Diabetes was defined as fasting blood sugar ≥126 mg/dL or a history of diagnosis or taking glucoselowering medications among all participants. Results: A total of 10,255 participants were enrolled in TCS, 59.5% of whom were female. Among the total population, 7,012 participants were urban residents (68.4%). The prevalence of daily smoking in the total population was 9.1%. Body mass index in 75.9% of participants was ≥25 kg/m². The prevalence of hypertension, diabetes, and thyroid disorders were 22.2%, 17.2%, and 10.5%, respectively. Conclusion: The Tabari cohort is different from other cohorts in terms of levels of risk factors associated with NCDs. This study has certain important strengths including its population-based design and large sample size that provides a valid platform for conducting future investigations and trials. A biobank that has been designed to store blood, nail, hair and urine samples for future research is another strength of this study.
