The First International Symposium on Avian Endocrinology (ISAE) was held 47 years ago at the Grand Hotel in Kolkata (Calcutta), India. Professor Asok Ghosh organized and convened the symposium, and Professor Donald S. Farner was President. The 1977 ISAE was convened at a time when neuroendocrine cascades were emerging as major pathways by which environmental events are perceived and transduced resulting in endocrine secretions that then orchestrate life history stages. Methods to measure hormone concentrations in blood and other tissues were relatively recent allowing the advance of laboratory and field investigations to explore ecological bases of endocrine control systems. The rise of evolutionary endocrinology and theory in ecological contexts followed—topics that are flourishing today. Studies on poultry continue to play central roles at ISAE meetings. In recent decades, the incorporation of genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, epigenetics and other technologies provide us with an unprecedented array of tools to explore endocrinological processes at mechanistic levels we could never have dreamed of in 1977. The future looks to be an era of major advances in neuroendocrinology. What technologies will arise and transform our knowledge further? Artificial intelligence (AI) is emerging as a tool in avian endocrinology in at least research on endocrine disrupting chemicals. Will AI facilitate new advances and research directions across the field? The future of basic research has never been brighter than it is now. The flipped classroom is an innovative pedagogy that shifts content delivery outside the classroom, utilizing in-class time for interactive learning. The preclass and in-class activities in this framework encourage individualized learning and collaborative problem-solving among students, fostering engagement. The Innovative Flipped Learning Instruction Project (IFLIP) conducted faculty development workshops over 4 years, guiding science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) faculty in integrating flipped teaching (FT) into their courses. The research aimed to assess its impact on pedagogical practices, explore its effectiveness, and provide a framework to implement FT across multiple institutions. It sought to evaluate the experiences of these educators throughout the transitional period of instructional change. In the fourth year of this project, a symposium was organized for IFLIP participants to share their experiences and findings concerning FT. This symposium helped promote collaboration among IFLIP participants and faculty interested in FT to disseminate participants' knowledge and experiences in implementing FT strategies. A survey conducted at the end of the symposium indicated that faculty participants with FT experience continued to embrace this pedagogy, and the new adopters expressed intentions to incorporate it into their courses. The survey revealed positive responses: 93% of respondents plan to integrate FT methods in future classes, 90% gained new information from the symposium and intend to implement it, and 91% are likely to recommend FT to colleagues. Ultimately, the symposium underscored the transformative impact of FT in empowering educators to deepen students' conceptual understanding, emphasizing the significance of this pedagogical approach in advancing the quality of education. Medical students are increasingly seeking out research opportunities to build their skills and network with future colleagues. Medical student-led conferences are an excellent endeavor to achieve this goal. The American Association of Neurological Surgeons student chapter at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell designed an in-person medical student research symposium alongside the Northwell Health Department of Neurosurgery. Postconference feedback forms were sent out digitally to student attendees to evaluate event planning and execution and responses were given on a scale of 1–5 (5 being the highest score). In December 2023, the Northeast Medical Student Research Symposium was held with over 80 participants and 52 medical student presenters. Keynote speakers delivered lectures geared toward students interested in neurosurgery and neuroscience research, followed by an interactive poster board session and resident/attending networking dinner. After the conference, students affirmed that they learned more about neuroscience research after the event (mean: 4.3), were more inclined to attend other neuroscience research events in the future (mean: 4.7), and would attend this event if held next year (mean: 4.8). The poster sessions (mean: 4.75) and keynote lectures (mean: 5) were the highest rated events, while the resident/attending networking dinner (mean: 3.6) was a potential area for improvement. Regional in-person conferences are an excellent way to foster interest in neurosurgery and neuroscience research, network with like-minded peers, and prepare students for presentations at national meetings. The 48th Congress of the Spanish Association of Cuniculture (ASESCU) was held in Córdoba, Andalusia, Spain. The congress was organised by ASESCU in collaboration with the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and the University of Córdoba. A total of four main lectures were delivered. One of these lectures discussed the current state of cuniculture in Andalusia, while another examined the evolution of the sector in Italy. Another lecture focused on state-of-the-art of alternatives to cages for rabbit housing, and the fourth lecture covered new rabbit lines developed for disease resistance. Additionally, two round tables were held, discussing the main challenges in the rabbit farming sector and new veterinary legislation. A total of 25 communications were presented on various topics, including nutrition, genetics, reproduction, housing and welfare, pathology and products. This two-day symposium included lectures and lecture-recitals by researchers from nineteen different European and North American universities. Many of the presentations seemed to offer answers to the question “what can we do to promote equality in music”. This report documents the symposium through four such answers: we can re-evaluate history, fix structural problems, renew performance practices, and commission new works in equality-enhancing ways.

As we step into 2023, the landscape of translational medicine continues to evolve, revealing the profound importance of preclinical imaging in bridging the gap between laboratory discoveries and clinical applications. Preclinical imaging allows researchers to visualize biological processes in real time, providing invaluable insights into the efficacy and safety of new therapeutic strategies. The ability to monitor changes at the organ, tissue, cellular, and molecular levels is not just a technological feat; it is a cornerstone of modern biomedical research. Non-invasive imaging techniques, such as high-frequency micro-ultrasound, MRI, CT, and advanced molecular imaging modalities like PET and SPECT, empower scientists to track disease progression and treatment responses longitudinally. This capability is particularly crucial in translational medicine, where understanding the dynamics of disease and therapy can lead to more effective interventions. At the forefront of this innovation is the TPCF (Tehran University of Medical Science Preclinical Core Facility), which champions the integration of science and technology in preclinical imaging. The 6th International TPCF Preclinical Imaging Symposium (TPIS 2023) promised to be a pivotal event for researchers dedicated to enhancing translational research. With an impressive lineup of keynote speakers and workshops, the symposium delved into cutting-edge imaging technologies that are revolutionizing drug discovery and development. The significance of preclinical imaging cannot be overstated; it not only accelerates the translation of research findings into clinical settings but also fosters collaboration among scientists, engineers, and clinicians. By sharing knowledge and resources, we can collectively push the boundaries of what is possible in medical science. ASTU’s development into a full-fledged science and technology university has helped it to forge strong linkage, coopration, and partnership with various national and international universities, development sectors, stake-holders, and relevant personalities. To showcase its all-round efforts, ASTU has organized its third national research symposium titled “Emerging Technologies for Building Green Economy”. This is a timely and broad agenda that is seen as a part of the national plan of transformation of the country. Thus, this research symposium aims to further strengthen the contribution of ASTU in development endeavours of the country at large.

The material presents a summary of the key presentations and the general direction of the discussion that unfolded during the scientific symposium "Risks of Social Change: Political Projection" held on 22 May 2024. The speakers presented the results of research on socio-political processes, including risks for modern states and political systems, as well as the prospects for eliminating global threats to modern Russia. The discussion achieved the main objectives of the event: discussion and clarification of existing scientific approaches to analysing modern social, political and socio-cultural changes, considered possible prospects, as well as short- and medium-term risks for the future of Russia.

The European Company Case Law (ECCL) Symposium took place on May 31, 2024, at the Faculty of Law, Ghent University in Belgium. The organizing committee consisted of Professor Hans De Wulf (Ghent University), Professor Joti Roest (University of Amsterdam), and Professor Diederik Bruloot (Ghent University). The ECCL comprises a pan-European board of experts representing each EU member state and publishes the ECCL journal, which offers readers a comprehensive overview of laws and legislation in the EU.

On October 12–14, 2023 the All-Russian (with international participation) symposium “Milestones of History” was held in the Chelyabinsk region. Four round tables were held within the framework of symposium: “Ulus of Jochi, time of formation: 1207–1243” (October 12, Varna village), “Mausoleums of the Middle Ages of the Volga-Urals, Crimea and Kazakhstan: research of problems” (October 12, Varna village), “Southern and Middle Urals from Jochi to Nicholas I” (October 13, Chelyabinsk) and “History, economics and culture of the medieval Turkic-Tatar states of Western Siberia” (October 14, Che­lyabinsk).

At the end of August 2023, the XVIII Symposium of the International Dostoevsky Society (IDS), dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the novel Demons, was held at the Nagoya University of Foreign Studies (Japan). The symposium took place in Asia for the first time and found wide resonance in the academic world. Scholars from 17 different countries participated with papers at the forum, showing a variety of approaches to research Dostoevsky’s works and life and raising a wide range of research issues, such as: “Current questions of research in Dostoevsky’s studies,” “Demons in its time and 150 years later,” “Dostoevsky in the Arts (music, cinema, theater, painting)”. The organizers of the Symposium paid special attention to the perception of Dostoevsky in Asia and his influence on Asian culture and literature; a significant event of the Symposium was the round table “Dostoevsky and modern Japanese writers.” The article includes a review of the reports that revealed the image of a “Japanese Dostoevsky”: they were devoted to the analysis of translations of the writer’s works into Japanese, their intermedial transcriptions, new interpretations of Dostoevsky’s works by Japanese scholars representing different generations and academic schools. Attention is paid to the reports of Russian scholars, dedicated to current topics in Dostoevsky’s studies and new research methods to approach the writer’s work.

For det første, at Platon i Symposium approprierer den spesifikt kvinnelige reproduksjonsaktiviteten og for det andre at han utsletter det kvinnelige, grunnet misogyne holdninger. Ved å nærlese Diotimas tale og særskilt legge merke til detaljer og terminologi, bidrar denne artikkelen med et argument mot disse antakelsene – at Platon approprierer og utsletter kvinner. Etter i tilstrekkelig grad å ha tilbakevist disse konklusjonene, eller i det minste å ha sådd alvorlig tvil om dem, går artikkelen over til en konstruktiv forklaringsbygging for hvorfor Platon benytter seg av Diotimas kvinnelige stemme og hvorfor han anvender fødselsmetaforer slik han gjør: I fortolkningen som foreslåes her, er målet for den filosofiske oppstigningen en gjenfødsel hvor filosofen blir sitt eget opphav. En slik gjenfødsel beror på sammensmeltningen av maskuline og feminine elementer, slik det sømmer seg en fødsel. Denne fortolkningen har også den fordelen at Platons Symposium blir konsistent med det politiske programmet i Staten.

The 2023 Surface EMG Symposium in China focused on the applications of surface electromyography (EMG) in clinical and rehabilitation practices. The symposium included presentations on topics such as myoelectric control for prostheses and rehabilitation robotics, surface EMG signal processing, and the examination of muscle performance. Researchers discussed the use of surface EMG in assessing neurological injuries and disorders, and physicians presented case studies on its diagnostic and prognostic capabilities. The symposium provided a platform for interdisciplinary academic exchange and highlighted the need for future symposia to address other important topics in surface EMG research. In this essay, I would like to draw closer the two realms of Platonic texts, both its erotic philosophy that relates to the concrete world of desire and passion, and the yearning for the spiritual, the divine, pure knowledge of things in themselves. To do so, I want to describe some elements from the dialogues Phaedrus and Symposium, but also some from Theaetetus. In a first moment, I want to delve into the idea of a Platonic erotic mysticism. This expression, erotic mysticism, contains two terms that may seem antithetical, as mysticism is the encounter of the human with the divine, and eroticism depicts bodily, sensual elements, generally dealing with the encounter of the human with another human. However, there is already a long tradition of using erotic terms to describe the mystical encounter, and Plato is an important chapter in this way of describing mysticism. Then, in a second moment, I intend to explore a passage from the dialogue Theaetetus to indicate how the contemplation of nature, typically philosophical, is a way of resembling the divine, becoming a virtuous and wise person. Thus, I seek to present how the desire for knowledge in Plato refers to a total vitality of the human, making philosophy not only an abstract investigation operated by the intellect but a way of life in its entirety. The social virtues are not discussed thematically in the Socratic writings of Plato and Xenophon, but they are on display everywhere. Taking Aristotle's accounts of these virtues as a touchstone, this paper explores the portrait of Socrates as a model of good humour in Xenophon's Symposium. While Xenophon is addressing the same issues as Aristotle, and shares some of his red lines, his conception of the ideal humourist and of virtue in general differs from Aristotle's not only in detail but also in general conception. While he never actually violates the rules Aristotle sets down for eutrapelia , Xenophon's Socrates strives not to avoid opposites but to combine them. It is the careful combining of the spoudaion and the geloion that redeems Xenophon's otherwise outrageous portrait of Socratic humour. This suggests a broader paradigm in which virtuous behaviour is a combination of opposites rather than a middle path. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As part of the ongoing reassessment of Xenophon's philosophical works, scholars have taken a renewed interest in the relationship between Xenophon and Plato, who occasionally criticize one another's works. Although ancient commentators assumed that the two men must have been rivals, a closer look at each one's comments on the other's work reveals that their criticisms were more philosophical than personal. After discussing two examples in which Plato and Xenophon criticize one another's works, in this paper I suggest that an unusual comment made by Xenophon about Lycurgus, the legendary Spartan lawgiver, is an oblique but critical reference to a statement in Plato's Symposium about Lycurgus' wisdom.
