Background: From the standpoint of infection prevention, anesthesiologists need to simultaneously use a surgical mask and an oxygen mask when administering oxygen to patients. However, there is a lack of scientific evidence to justify this method. We aimed to investigate a suitable method of oxygen administration when using a surgical mask in postoperative patients. Methods: This was a randomized, single-blind, cross-over study involving 42 patients admitted to the ICU. We compared three methods of oxygen administration: nasal cannula under the surgical mask, oxygen mask under the surgical mask, and oxygen mask above the surgical mask, using a cross-over design. The primary endpoint was partial pressure of arterial oxygen (PaO2). The secondary endpoint was partial pressure of arterial carbon dioxide (PaCO2). Results: PaO2 was higher when the oxygen mask was placed under the surgical mask (median values 197.7 mmHg), the nasal cannula was under the surgical mask (180.6 mmHg), and the oxygen mask was above the surgical mask (143.0 mmHg), in descending order, with significant differences between all groups (P < 0.001). PaCO2 did not differ between groups. Conclusions: The current standard method of administering oxygen to postoperative patients using an oxygen mask over a surgical mask results in poor oxygenation. Abstract\nIMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATI-ONPurpose: The study examined the benefits of transparent versus non-transparent surgical masks on the speech intelligibility in quiet of adult cochlear implant (CI) users, in conjunction with patient preferences and the acoustic effects of the different masks on the speech signal.Methods: Speech tracking test (STT) scores and acoustical characteristics were measured in quiet for live speech in three different conditions, without mask, with a non-transparent surgical mask and with a transparent surgical mask. Patients were asked about their experience with the face masks. The study sample consists of 30 patients using a cochlear implant.Results: We found a significant difference in speech perception among all conditions, with the speech tracking scores revealing a significant advantage when switching from the non-transparent surgical mask to the transparent one. The transparent surgical mask, although it does not transmit high frequencies effectively, seems to have minimal effect on speech comprehension in practice when lip movements are visible. This substantial benefit is further emphasized in the questionnaire, where 82% of the patients express a preference for the transparent surgical mask.Conclusion: The study highlights significant benefits for patients in speech intelligibility in quiet with the use of medically safe transparent facemasks. Transitioning from standard surgical masks to transparent masks demonstrates highly significant effectiveness and patient satisfaction for patients with hearing loss. OBJECTIVE: Masks are one of the most important defenses against the virus. However, the impact of wearing masks during daily activities or sports on respiratory and circulatory function remains controversial. A comprehensive quantitative evaluation of the effects of mask-wearing on human heart rate, oxygen saturation and end-expiratory carbon dioxide by Meta-analysis was conducted. The effects of wearing different types of masks at different exercise intensities and time of exercise on the human respiratory and circulatory system were explored. METHODS: By February 2023, with “mask, face mask, N95, training, sports, running, walking, cycling” as the Chinese search terms and “masks, respiratory protective devices, N95 respirators, surgical face masks, exercise, resistance training, explosive training, muscle exercises” as English search terms, the experimental studies addressing the influence of exercise with a mask on hemodynamic indexes were retrieved from CNKI, Web of Science, PubMed, Cochrane Library and WanFang databases. The outcome indicators included three continuous variables - exercise center rate, blood oxygen saturation and end-expiratory carbon dioxide. Stata16.0 software was used to analyze the outcome indicators of the included literature. The PEDro scale was used as a quality assessment tool, and the funnel plot was used to analyze the impact of publication bias. RESULTS: Totally 25 articles involving 857 healthy children and adults were included in this Meta-analysis. The overall methodological quality was high, with 22 studies scoring 6 points on the PEDro scale, 2 studies scoring 7 points and 1 study scoring 8 points. The meta-analysis results showed that compared with the control group, exercise with masks had no significant effect on heart rate (SMD=0.02, 95%CI: -0.11 to 0.15, P=0.81), but increased end-expiratory carbon dioxide (SMD=0.60, 95%CI: 0.37 to 0.83, P=0.00), decreased oxygen saturation (SMD=-0.28, 95%CI: -0.47 to -0.09, P=0.03). Intensity and duration were the factors that affected the heterogeneity between studies. Wearing a mask during high-intensity exercise significantly increased heart rate (SMD=-0.20, 95%CI: -0.36 to -0.04, P=0.02). The effect of high-intensity and short-time exercise on blood oxygen saturation was significantly higher than that of other exercises (SMD=-0.40, 95%CI: -0.70 to -0.10; SMD=-0.25, 95%CI: -0.45 to -0.04). For end-expiratory carbon dioxide, maintaining a certain intensity and increasing the exercise time or increasing the intensity further increased the index significantly, reaching a moderate effect size (SMD=0.61, 95%CI: 0.06 to 1.15; SMD=0.58, 95%CI: 0.04 to 1.13). CONCLUSION: Existing evidence suggests that exercise with masks may have the adverse effect of increasing end-expiratory carbon dioxide and decreasing blood oxygen saturation. The influence of different exercise test time and intensities on the three outcome indexes was different. Wearing a mask during high-intensity exercise can significantly increase heart rate and decrease blood oxygen saturation. Maintaining moderate intensity for a long period or further increasing the intensity of exercise will lead to increased end-expiratory carbon dioxide levels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test is the gold standard for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) detection. Proper specimen collection and obtaining a sufficient specimen are the most essential steps for laboratory diagnosis. The nasopharyngeal (NP) swab is recommended as the reference collection method. However, NP swab collection is invasive and uncomfortable for patients and poses some risk to healthcare workers. This study aimed to compare the efficacy of SARS-CoV-2 RNA detection from surgical masks with the NP swab method using RT-PCR testing. Of 269 patients, RT-PCR RNA from NP swabs was detected among 82 patients (30.5%) and was undetected among 187 patients (69.5%). All patients were tested for SARS-CoV-2 RNA from surgical masks. SARS-CoV-2 RNA was detected in 25/82 (30.5%) surgical mask filters, while undetected among 57 (69.5%). For the surgical mask with an average use time of 7.05 h, the sensitivity was 30.5%, the specificity was 100.0%, with positive predictive value of 100.0% and negative predictive value of 76.2%. Therefore, surgical masks could be an alternative non-invasive specimen source for SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR testing. The results of our study suggest that the test could be employed after wearing surgical masks for at least 8-12 h, with increased sensitivity when used for more than 12 h.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the mandatory use of multiple surgical masks or N95 respirators in public raised concerns about potential health issues associated with the increased breathing force needed to maintain the breathing cycle. To address these concerns, we conducted a comprehensive study investigating the transportation and filtering mechanisms of heterogeneous nanoparticles and virus-like particles through surgical masks and N95 respirators. Our multifaceted approach combined in vitro experiments utilising aerosol spray paints containing nanoparticles and in vivo validation on human volunteer inhaling city air. We employed scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy to analyse the distribution of nanoparticles across various mask layers and pristine silicon substrates placed on human skin. In addition, we provide analytical insights into the pressure distribution and fluid velocity profiles within the complex polymer fibre network of the masks. Our findings remarkably revealed that both single surgical masks and N95 respirators exhibited similar nanofluidic performance in filtering colloidal and jet-stream nanoparticles in the air. These results have significant implications for policymakers in developing regulations to manage airborne pandemics and air pollution control, ultimately enhancing public health and safety during respiratory health crises.

Introduction: The widespread use of surgical masks during the COVID-19 pandemic has posed challenges in interpreting facial emotions. As the mouth is known to play a crucial role in decoding emotional expressions, its covering is likely to affect this process. Recent evidence suggests that facial expressions impact behavioral responses only when their emotional content is relevant to subjects' goals. Thus, this study investigates whether and how masked emotional faces alter such a phenomenon. Methods: Forty participants completed two reaching versions of the Go/No-go task in a counterbalanced fashion. In the Emotional Discrimination Task (EDT), participants were required to respond to angry, fearful, or happy expressions by performing a reaching movement and withholding it when a neutral face was presented. In the Gender Discrimination Task (GDT), the same images were shown, but participants had to respond according to the poser's gender. The face stimuli were presented in two conditions: covered by a surgical mask (masked) or without any covering (unmasked). Results: Consistent with previous studies, valence influenced behavioral control in the EDT but not in the GDT. Nevertheless, responses to facial emotions in the EDT exhibited significant differences between unmasked and masked conditions. In the former, angry expressions led to a slowdown in participants' responses. Conversely, in the masked condition, behavioral reactions were impacted by fearful and, to a greater extent, by happy expressions. Responses to fearful faces were slower, and those to happy faces exhibited increased variability in the masked condition compared to the unmasked condition. Furthermore, response accuracy to masked happy faces dramatically declined compared to the unmasked condition and other masked emotions. Discussion: In sum, our findings indicate that surgical masks disrupt reactions to emotional expressions, leading people to react less accurately and with heightened variability to happy expressions, provided that the emotional dimension is relevant to people's goals. Methods: We created 20 sets of five sentences; 10 sets consisting of explicit words, and 10 containing ambiguous words. Each set was recorded by a speaker while wearing a surgical mask or an N95 mask, combined with a face shield. A total of four combinations of speech data were created. Each subject was asked to listen to one set from each of the four combinations and write down the speech. The test was performed in normal background noise as well as in noise levels of 50, 60, and 70 dB. Results: Twenty-eight volunteers were included in this study. In the tests for explicit sentences, intelligibility of speech with an N95 mask was significantly lower than that with a surgical mask in the presence of 60 dB noise. As for explicit sentences produced with a surgical mask, intelligibility was significantly decreased in the presence of 70 dB noise. Regarding explicit sentences produced with an N95 mask, intelligibility was significantly decreased in the presence of 60 and 70 dB noise. In the tests for ambiguous sentences, intelligibility of speech produced with an N95 mask was not significantly lower than that with a surgical mask at all noise levels. As for ambiguous sentences produced with a surgical mask, no significant decrease in intelligibility was observed at any noise level. Regarding ambiguous sentences produced with an N95 mask, intelligibility was significantly decreased in the presence of 60 and 70 dB noise. The effect of wearing masks on olfaction remains unclear. This study aimed to clarify the differences between the effects of no masks, surgical masks, and N95 respirator masks by conducting both identification and threshold olfaction tests. Young, healthy volunteers aged ≥ 18 years and < 30 years without awareness of apparent olfactory disorder were included. All participants filled out a questionnaire on olfaction and completed an acuity smell identification test (Open Essence test) and an olfactory threshold test (T&T olfactometry) while wearing no masks, surgical masks, or N95 respirator masks. In the Open Essence tests, the no-mask group score was significantly higher than those of the surgical- and N95-mask groups. Using T&T olfactometry, the median-detection threshold of the no-mask group was significantly lower than that of the surgical-mask group, and the surgical-mask group threshold was significantly lower than that of the N95-mask group. Similar patterns were observed for the median-recognition threshold. Wearing masks, especially an N95 mask, reduces the ability to detect and identify odors. During the COVID-19 pandemic, dental face shields were recommended to protect the eyes. This study aimed to examine to what extent face shield and mask contamination differ when a pre-procedural mouth rinsing with Chlorhexidine (CHX) is conducted before treatment. In this prospective, randomized study, three groups of subjects were formed (rinsing with 0.1% CHX, water, or no rinsing (control) before aerosol-producing treatments). After each of the 301 treatments, the practitioner's face shield was swabbed with eSwab and the mask was brought into contact with agar plates. Sampling was done from the exterior surface only. Samples were cultured for 48 h at 35 °C under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Bacteria were classified by phenotypic characteristics, biochemical test methods, and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). Colony-forming units were counted and mean values were compared (WSR, H-test, U-test, p < 0.05). Within each subject group, face shields showed significantly more contamination than surgical masks (control group: 350 CFU, 50 CFU; intervention water: 270 CFU, 40 CFU; intervention CHX: 250 CFU, 30 CFU). Comparison of face shields of the different subject groups did not reveal any statistically significant differences. However, CHX resulted in a statistically significant bacterial reduction on surgical masks compared to the water and control group (control: 50 CFU, intervention water: 40 CFU, intervention CHX: 30 CFU). Contamination of face shields and surgical masks was highest in the control group, followed by the water group, and lowest in the intervention group with CHX. Streptococcus spp. and Staphylococcus spp. dominated, representing the oral and cutaneous flora. Contamination of masks worn with or without face shields did not differ. Presumably, face shields intercept first splashes and droplets, while the masks were mainly exposed to bioaerosol mist. Consequently, face shields protect the facial region and surroundings from splashes and droplets, but not the mask itself. A pre-procedural mouth rinse with CHX had no statistically significant reducing effect on contamination of the face shield, but a statistically significant reducing effect was observed on contamination of the mask. Objectives: During the coronavirus disease-2019 pandemic, masks have become mandatory for protection against the virus transmitted by breathing. This study examined the impact of surgical masks used daily on civilian facial skin. Materials and Methods: Moisture, elasticity, pore, melanin, acne, wrinkle, and sensitivity parameters of 83 volunteers were measured numerically using an API-100 skin analyzer and camera recordings. Numerical values were compared following the device's algorithm calibrated according to age, gender, and race. Finally, the obtained data were statistically evaluated and compared with the averages. Results: Pore, melanin, acne, and wrinkle parameters were higher without gender discrimination, whereas moisture and elasticity parameters were low. While a significant increase was observed in women for sensitivity, the increase was not statistically significant in men. Conclusion: The negative effects of long-term daily wearing of surgical masks on facial skin were statistically significant. Therefore, taking outdoor breaks during mask use, washing the face intermittently, using moisturizing and purifying cosmetic products, and anti-wrinkle effects have been proposed to reduce the possible defects. We outlined the causes of non-compliance and developed and implemented improvement plans. Under certain circumstances, masks are an effective and immediate solution to reduce the spread of viral infection. However, the impact of masks on the ability to perform vigorous exercise remains an area of concern. Primarily, this impact has been explored in healthy subjects, yielding contradictory findings, and little is known of it among COVID-19-infected individuals. This study examined the effects of surgical masks, N-95 masks, and unmasked conditions on the performance and perceived exertion (RPE) of infected vs. non-infected young women during high-intensity, repeated sprint exercise (5mSRT). Following a familiarization session, eighty-three (42 COVID-19-previously infected (PIG) and 43 non-infected (NIG)), female participants (age 20.02 ± 1.05 years, BMI 21.07 ± 2.1 kg/m2) were randomly assigned to one of three mask conditions: unmasked, surgical mask, or N95 mask. All participants attended three test sessions (i.e., one session for each mask condition) at least one week apart. At the beginning of each test session, data related to participants’ physical activity (PA) and sleep behaviours during the previous week were collected. In each test session, participants performed the 5mSRT, during which performance indicators (best distance (BD), total distance (TD), fatigue index (FI) and percentage decrement (PD)) were collected, along with RPE. ANOVA indicated no significant main effects of Groups and Masks, and no significant interaction for Groups × Masks for BD, FI, PD, RPE and most sleep and PA behaviours (p > 0.05). For TD, the Groups × Mask interaction was significant (p = 0.031 and ƞp2 = 0.042). Posthoc analysis revealed, in the unmasked condition, there was no difference in TD between PIG and NIG (p > 0.05). However, when wearing a surgical mask, PIG covered lower TD compared to NIG (p < 0.05). Additionally, different types of masks did not affect TD in NIG, while PIG performed the worst using the surgical mask (p < 0.05). These results suggest post-COVID-19 individuals can maintain physical fitness through regular exercise (i.e., sport science curricula) in unmasked conditions, but not when wearing a surgical mask. Furthermore, the impact of different types of face masks on physical performance seems to be minimal, particularly in uninfected populations; future research is warranted to further explore this impact in post-COVID conditions.

Objective To determine the frequency of acne formation with usage of face masks among health care workers and to determine factors associated with acne formation in relation to usage of face masks. Methods This was a cross sectional study, conducted in a tertiary care hospital. Study participants were 191 healthcare workers in different categories. Data was obtained on the face mask related factors and acne development or exacerbation. Chi Square test will be applied to see the relationship between acne formation and usage of face masks. Results Among the participants 70% were female and 30% are male. Surgical mask were the most common type of mask used by them. on average the duration of mask use was 6 to 12hrs/day and majority was using facemasks for more than 6 weeks. Among the participants 20% of those experienced acne at O-Zone of face. Effective human communication relies heavily on emotions, making them a crucial aspect of interaction. As technology progresses, the desire for machines to exhibit more human-like characteristics, including emotion recognition, grows. DeepFace has emerged as a widely adopted library for facial emotion recognition. However, the widespread use of surgical masks after the COVID-19 pandemic presents a considerable obstacle to its performance. To assess this issue, we conducted a benchmark using the FER2013 dataset. The results revealed a substantial performance decline when individuals wore surgical masks. "Disgust" suffers a 22.6% F1-score reduction, while "Surprise" is least affected with a 48.7% reduction. Under certain circumstances, masks are an effective and immediate solution to reduce the spread of viral infection. However, the impact of masks on the ability to perform vigorous exercise remains an area of concern. Primarily, this impact has been explored in healthy subjects, yielding contradictory findings, and little is known of it among COVID-19-infected individuals. This study examined the effects of surgical masks, N-95 masks, and unmasked conditions on the performance and perceived exertion (RPE) of infected vs. non-infected young women during high-intensity, repeated sprint exercise (5mSRT). Following a familiarization session, eighty-three (42 COVID-19-previously infected (PIG) and 43 non-infected (NIG)), female participants (age 20.02 ± 1.05 years, BMI 21.07 ± 2.1 kg/m2) were randomly assigned to one of three mask conditions: unmasked, surgical mask, or N95 mask. All participants attended three test sessions (i.e., one session for each mask condition) at least one week apart. At the beginning of each test session, data related to participants' physical activity (PA) and sleep behaviours during the previous week were collected. In each test session, participants performed the 5mSRT, during which performance indicators (best distance (BD), total distance (TD), fatigue index (FI) and percentage decrement (PD)) were collected, along with RPE. ANOVA indicated no significant main effects of Groups and Masks, and no significant interaction for Groups × Masks for BD, FI, PD, RPE and most sleep and PA behaviours (p > 0.05). For TD, the Groups × Mask interaction was significant (p = 0.031 and ƞp2 = 0.042). Posthoc analysis revealed, in the unmasked condition, there was no difference in TD between PIG and NIG (p > 0.05). However, when wearing a surgical mask, PIG covered lower TD compared to NIG (p < 0.05). Eye discomfort is a major complaint reported in indoor spaces and has been suggested to be exacerbated by environmental conditions such as low humidity and high air velocity. Wearing face masks, which has become essential in our daily lives during the COVID-19 pandemic, can also cause eye discomfort by affecting the microclimate around the eyes. We conducted a pilot study to evaluate the effect of wearing masks on eye discomfort by measuring the physical environment around the eyes and short-term physiological and psychological responses and comparing them with and without surgical face masks. The results showed that when the participant wore a mask, exhaled air flowed out through the gap at the top edge of the mask, resulting in a higher air velocity and absolute humidity around the eyes than when the mask was not worn. No significant differences were found in subjective discomfort, tear-film stability, ocular surface temperature or blink frequency. However, the tear evaporation rate, estimated based on physical measurements, was greater when wearing a mask than when not wearing it. IntroductionThe widespread use of surgical masks during the COVID-19 pandemic has posed challenges in interpreting facial emotions. As the mouth is known to play a crucial role in decoding emotional expressions, its covering is likely to affect this process. Recent evidence suggests that facial expressions impact behavioral responses only when their emotional content is relevant to subjects’ goals. Thus, this study investigates whether and how masked emotional faces alter such a phenomenon.MethodsForty participants completed two reaching versions of the Go/No-go task in a counterbalanced fashion. In the Emotional Discrimination Task (EDT), participants were required to respond to angry, fearful, or happy expressions by performing a reaching movement and withholding it when a neutral face was presented. In the Gender Discrimination Task (GDT), the same images were shown, but participants had to respond according to the poser’s gender. The face stimuli were presented in two conditions: covered by a surgical mask (masked) or without any covering (unmasked).ResultsConsistent with previous studies, valence influenced behavioral control in the EDT but not in the GDT. Nevertheless, responses to facial emotions in the EDT exhibited significant differences between unmasked and masked conditions. In the former, angry expressions led to a slowdown in participants’ responses. Conversely, in the masked condition, behavioral reactions were impacted by fearful and, to a greater extent, by happy expressions. Responses to fearful faces were slower, and those to happy faces exhibited increased variability in the masked condition compared to the unmasked condition. Furthermore, response accuracy to masked happy faces dramatically declined compared to the unmasked condition and other masked emotions.DiscussionIn sum, our findings indicate that surgical masks disrupt reactions to emotional expressions, leading people to react less accurately and with heightened variability to happy expressions, provided that the emotional dimension is relevant to people’s goals.

Background: From 2020 to 2023 many people around the world were forced to wear masks for large proportions of the day based on mandates and laws. We aimed to study the potential of face masks for the content and release of inanimate toxins. Methods: A scoping review of 1003 studies was performed (database search in PubMed/MEDLINE, qualitative and quantitative evaluation). Results: 24 studies were included (experimental time 17 min to 15 days) evaluating content and/or release in 631 masks (273 surgical, 228 textile and 130 N95 masks). Most studies (63%) showed alarming results with high micro- and nanoplastics (MPs and NPs) release and exceedances could also be evidenced for volatile organic compounds (VOCs), xylene, acrolein, per-/polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), phthalates (including di(2-ethylhexyl)-phthalate, DEHP) and for Pb, Cd, Co, Cu, Sb and TiO2. Discussion: Of course, masks filter larger dirt and plastic particles and fibers from the air we breathe and have specific indications, but according to our data they also carry risks. Depending on the application, a risk-benefit analysis is necessary. Conclusion: Undoubtedly, mask mandates during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic have been generating an additional source of potentially harmful exposition to toxins with health threatening and carcinogenic properties at population level with almost zero distance to the airways.

Abstract Background Our study aimed to compare the prevalence of postoperative fever during the COVID-19 pandemic period with that of the preceding non-pandemic period. Methods A retrospective analysis was conducted on patients with pectus excavatum (PE) undergoing minimally invasive repair (also called NUSS procedure) at Nanjing Children’s Hospital from January 1, 2017 to March 1, 2019 (Group 2019), and from January 1, 2020 to March 1, 2021 (Group 2021). Data from a total of 284 patients, consisting of 200 (70.4%) males and 84 (29.6%) females with an average age of 9.73 ± 3.41 (range, 4 to 17) years, were collected. The presence of post-operative fever (defined as a forehead temperature of 37.5℃ or above within 72 h post-surgery), as well as the time of operation, duration of postoperative mechanical ventilator and urinary catheter use, and length of hospitalization were all assessed in admitted patients from Group 2019 (n = 144) and Group 2021 (n = 140). Postoperative white blood cell (WBC), C-reactive protein (CRP) levels, and prevalence of postoperative complications (i.e., pneumothorax, pulmonary atelectasis, pneumonia, wound infection, and dehiscence) were also determined. Result Our results showed a statistically significant decrease in the incidence of postoperative fever within 24 to 72 h of surgery in patients admitted from Group 2019 as compared to Group 2021 (p 0.05). The average hospitalization length of Group 2021 was significantly shorter than Group 2019 (12.49 ± 2.57 vs. 11.85 ± 2.19 days, p 0.05). Conclusion The prevalence of postoperative fever within 72 h of surgery and the length of hospital stay for patients with PE undergoing NUSS surgery were both decreased in Group 2021. We propose that the above phenomenon may be related to increased used of personal protection equipment (such as surgical masks and filtering facepiece respirators (FFRs)) by physicians, nurses, and the patients themselves.

Background During the COVID-19 pandemic, wearing masks and maintaining social distancing have become common personal protective measures. However, there is little research on alterations in cardiopulmonary function of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) after wearing different masks. Objective To study the effect of wearing a surgical mask versus an N95 respirator on cardiopulmonary function in patients with COPD. Methods Thirty patients diagnosed with COPD in General Hospital of Xinjiang Military Region were recruited from 30th June to 10th August, 2022, and randomly assigned to either an N95 respirator group (n=15) or a surgical mask group (n=15) . Both groups underwent two bouts of walking on a treadmill at a speed of 4 km/h for 20 min with an interval of 24 h (washout period) , with the difference that N95 respirator group wore an N95 respirator in the first bout and a surgical mask in the second bout, and surgical mask group did the opposite. Arterial blood gas analysis was performed, and heart rate, blood pressure and respiratory rate were measured immediately after each bout of walking, and the overall pre- and post-experiment alterations of these indicators were calculated. The lowest percutaneous arterial oxygen saturation (SpO2) and the maximum respiration rate during the experiment were monitored, and adverse events were recorded as well. Results All the participants completed the experiment. Compared with the surgical mask group, N95 respirator group had increased difference between pre- and post-experiment arterial pH〔0.013 (0.020) vs -0.004 (0.010) , P=0.001〕, arterial partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PaCO2) 〔1.2 (1.2) mmHg vs 0.5 (1.6) mmHg, P=0.001〕 or arterial partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2) 〔12.5 (10.5) mmHg vs 5.0 (13.2) mmHg, P=0.002〕. In the experiment, dyspnea occurred in 25 cases (83.3%) wearing an N95 respirator, and 16 cases (53.3%) wearing a surgical mask. Compared with wearing a surgical mask, the relative risk of dyspnea in COPD patients wearing an N95 respirator during the experiment was 1.563〔95%CI (1.078, 2.264) , P=0.012〕. Conclusion COPD patients wearing an N95 respirator during walking are more likely to have alterations in arterial pH, PaCO2 and PaO2 levels, which affect the gas exchange and may cause dyspnea.

Abstract Objective COVID‐19 has radically changed medical practice. The main objective of this study was to assess the impact of surgical mask (SM) on voice quality analyzes in a group of patient with different common benign vocal organic pathologies. Study Design A cross‐over study. Setting A group of 20 patients with different organic benign vocal pathologies was recruited from the ENT consultation of the University Hospital of Charleroi in Belgium. Methods On the day of the assessment, each subject underwent an endonasal laryngeal videostroboscopy followed by a voice analysis (VA) with and without a new SM. The following parameters were analyzed: fundamental frequency, maximum frequency, range in amplitude and frequency of the voice, jitter and maximum phonatory time. Results In this research, we showed that VA can be performed with an SM while not changing the measured vocal parameters. These results also suggest that for the same individual a VA performed before the pandemic without SM could be compared to one with a SM to follow the patient's evolution of his or her voice quality. Conclusion The wearing of an SM during VA should always be recommended in case of immunodeficiency, a contagious disease of the patient or during a (new) pandemic.

Purpose: It is not clear whether or not high-flow nasal oxygenation used in patients with severe respiratory tract infection, or coughing, increases the risk of infection to the healthcare personnel, and whether or not applying a surgical mask to the patient's face or treating the patient in a negative-pressure room can reduce the risk. Methods: In a randomized crossover design, we compared in 50 participants receiving high-flow nasal oxygenation, the aerosol counts measured at approximately 20 cm above the participant's mouth in 32 different circumstances (with or without coughing, with or without wearing a surgical mask, at four different flow rates of oxygenation, in a positive- or negative-pressure operating room). Results: In a positive-pressure room, a surgical mask significantly decreased the aerosol counts during coughing (P = 0.0005), or during no coughing (P = 0.009), under high-flow nasal oxygenation (at 60 l.min−1). In the negative-pressure room, the aerosol count was significantly lower than in the positive-pressure room, for all the circumstances (all P < 0.001), and a surgical mask significantly decreased the aerosol counts during coughing (P = 0.047) but not during no coughing (P = 0.60). Conclusion: In conclusion, treating a patient in a negative-pressure room, or applying a surgical mask, during high-flow nasal oxygenation (with the flow rate of 60 l.min−1) would inhibit, but would not completely prevent, dispersion of aerosols by coughing. Chest compression with rescue breathing improves outcomes in cardiac arrest. However, the efficacy of rescue breathing through surgical masks has not been investigated. We aimed to compare the tidal volume generated by mouth-to-mouth ventilation (MMV) with that generated by surgical mask-to-mouth ventilation (SMV), mouth-to-surgical mask ventilation (MSV), and surgical mask-to-surgical mask ventilation (SSV) in a manikin. A crossover randomized controlled trial was conducted in 42 medical personnel volunteers randomly assigned to perform four ventilation techniques: MMV (no protective equipment), SMV (participant wearing a mask), MSV (manikin wearing a mask), and SSV, (both participant and manikin wearing a mask). The average tidal volume and the proportion of adequate ventilation, evaluated using a manikin, were compared across different ventilation methods. The average tidal volume of MMV (828 ± 278 ml) was significantly higher than those of the MSV (648 ± 250 ml, P < 0.001) and SSV (466 ± 301 ml, P < 0.001), but not SMV (744 ± 288 ml, P = 0.054). Adequate ventilation was achieved in 144/168 (85.7%) cases in the MMV group, a proportion significantly higher than in the SMV (77.4%, P = 0.02), MSV (66.7%, P < 0.001) and SSV (39.3%, P < 0.001) groups. The willingness to perform SMV was higher than that to perform MMV. MMV resulted in a superior average tidal volume when compared to both MSV and SSV. There are very limited methods of relieving dyspnea that are independent of the causative disease. L-menthol olfactory stimulation is reported to be effective for dyspnea during exercise and inspiratory resistance. Therefore, we examined the effects of L-menthol olfactory stimulation on exertional dyspnea during the 6 min walking distance test (6MWT) in patients with chronic breathlessness syndrome. The subjects who consented to the study were divided into two groups. In Group A, the first 6MWT was performed as usual (placebo) while wearing a surgical mask, and the second 6MWT was performed under the L-menthol condition. In Group B, the first 6MWT was performed under the L-menthol condition, and the second 6MWT was performed as a placebo. A total of 16 subjects (70.8 ± 9.5 years) were included in the analysis. As for the effect of reducing dyspnea, a significant difference was observed in Group A patients who underwent the L-menthol condition in the second 6MWT (p = 0.034). In the comparison of the 6 min walking test under the L-menthol condition and the placebo, the modified Borg scale gain was significantly different between the L-menthol condition and the placebo (p = 0.007). Health experts and institutions recommend face coverings for kids above the age of 2 during the COVID-19 pandemic. The objective of this research is to examine the impact of wearing surgical masks on functional movement and stability in primary school-aged children. A sample of sixty healthy elementary school children aged between 9-12 were recruited. The variables of the study were six minutes walking test (6 MWT), 30-second sit to stand test, single leg stance test (SLST) and a dyspnea assessment. All assessments were contrasted between the two testing scenarios [wearing a surgical mask (SM) and not wearing a mask (NM)]. A statistically significant difference was observed when comparing the 6 MWT (p=0.00) and the 30-second sit-to-stand test (p=0.00) outcomes for both NM and SM situations. There was no significant difference in SLST between testing conditions (p>0.05). Also, the rating of perceived dyspnea values with the mask was significantly greater than the test condition without a mask (p<0.05). The use of a mask can cause differences in performance. Background: Masks may have negative impacts on health; thus, it is important to investigate mask-related symptoms and the effects of masks on mucociliary clearance. We conducted our investigation using 4 study groups to determine the longterm health effects of both surgical and respiratory masks. Methods: We studied 139 people aged 18-65 years. Participants were divided into 4 groups: single surgical mask, double surgical mask, N95 or equivalent mask alone, and surgical mask in combination with N95 or equivalent mask. The saccharin test was used to measure the mucociliary clearance times. We performed the saccharin test with a 1 × 1 × 1 mm piece of saccharin (Hermesetas®) and sterile-appropriate technique. Results: In this study, no significant difference was found between the groups in terms of saccharin transition time. Prolongation of mask wearing time was positively correlated with headache symptom, with the correlation coefficient of 0.26 (P = .002). It was also found that not wearing an N95 mask reduced the symptom of earache 0.35 times (P = .025). Conclusion: In this study, no severe symptoms were detected that would limit the use of masks. The massive use of surgical masks around the world has exacerbated plastic pollution. Efficient treatment of these surgical masks is urgently needed. Supercritical water degradation has been considered as a promising method for treating surgical masks. In this study, analysis of the products revealed that the production rate of H 2 and olefins from surgical masks with nose clips treated by supercritical water were significantly higher than that without nose clips. Therefore, it was concluded that Fe in the nose clip could catalyze the dehydrogenation of alkanes and inhibit the aromatization of cycloalkanes and alkenes compounds in the supercritical water treatment process of waste surgical masks. However, the ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) hot melt adhesive in the surgical masks degraded at a low temperature, producing ketone compounds that negatively impacted the quality of liquid oil. When a pandemic such as that caused by the novel coronavirus disease termed COVID-19 emerges, it is recommended to wear a mask when in public situations, with information regarding the impact on thermoregulation essential, especially during exercise or hard physical labor. The present study investigated changes in core body temperature (CBT) while wearing a surgical mask (SM) during exercise (TCBT) using a non-invasive zero-heat-flux (ZHF) thermometer. Nine young adult females performed ergometer exercise for 30 min at 60 W with (mask group) and without (control) a SM under a non-hot condition, shown by wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT) findings. TCBT, mean skin temperature (TMST), heart rate (HR), and humidity in the perioral region of the face (%RH) were determined. Each of those markers showed increased values during exercise, with the increases in TCBT, HR, and %RH, but not TMST, during exercise found to be significantly greater in the mask group. HR reserve (%HRR), derived as load intensity during exercise, was also significantly higher in the mask group. Each subject completed all of the experimental protocols without noting pain or discomfort. These results suggest that wearing a SM while performing mild exercise contributes to increased TCBT associated with increased exercise intensity, expressed as %HRR in a non-heated condition. Furthermore, the ZHF thermometer was shown to be safe and is considered useful for conducting such studies. Objective: To determine preferences and practices regarding facemasks in order to prevent COVID-19 spread among citizens of different countries. Methods: It was a cross-sectional study conducted from July to August, 2020. Participants of more than 15 years of age, irrespective of the residing country and gender, who had access to the internet and understood the English language, were voluntarily asked to participate in the study. The survey form was distributed digitally among 12 different countries through social media platforms. The survey form had the following 4 sub-sections: Section one included a written informed consent form, section two included questions regarding socio-demographics, the third section included a question on face mask preferences, fourth section assessed respondents’ practices regarding face mask wearing in terms of hygiene and disposing habits. Results: Among the 2,573 participants, the mean age was 32.58±11.65 years with the majority being females (54.8%). From all the included 12 countries, it was found that a surgical mask was the most preferred type of face mask and there was a statistically significant difference in the percentage of face mask preferences in all countries (p=0.001). The majority of the participants were found to have inappropriate practices regarding face mask usage, hygiene, and subsequent disposing (78.1%). In all countries, the percentage of inappropriate practices was significantly higher than appropriate practices with a p-value=0.001. Conclusion: Surgical mask was a commonly used face mask and among all countries, practices regarding the usage of face masks, hygiene, and disposal of face masks were inappropriate. However, in both India and America, the second most preferred mask was a reusable fabric mask instead of the N95 respirator. Furthermore, most participants from all the included countries exhibited inappropriate practices when it came to facemask wearing, hand washing, and disposing of the mask.

Background: The studies on cardiovascular alterations when using an N95 respirator or surgical mask‐covered N95 during dental treatments are limited. Aim: To investigate and compare the cardiovascular responses of dentists treating paediatric patients while wearing an N95 respirator or a surgical mask‐covered N95. Design: This was a crossover clinical trial in 18 healthy dentists wearing an N95 respirator or surgical mask‐covered N95 during the dental treatment of paediatric patients. Oxygen saturation (SpO2), heart rate (HR), systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and mean arterial pressure (MAP) were monitored at baseline, intraoperation, and postoperation. The data were analyzed using the generalized estimating equation. Results: The mean SpO2, HR, SBP, DBP, and MAP significantly changed from baseline up to the end of the procedures after wearing an N95 by 3.1%, 19.3%, 11.5%, 17.7%, and 13.8% and after wearing a surgical mask‐covered N95 by 3.0%, 20.2%, 5.3%, 13.9%, and 8.8%, respectively (p <.05). No significant differences in these values were found between groups (p >.05). Conclusions: N95 respirators and surgical mask‐covered N95s significantly impact the cardiovascular responses of dentists treating paediatric patients with no differences between the two types of masks. The COVID-19 pandemic has led to the increased use of disposable face masks worldwide, resulting in a surge of potentially infectious waste. This waste must be safely managed and disposed of to prevent the spread of the virus. To address this issue, a preliminary study explored the use of hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) as a potential method for converting surgical mask waste into value-added carbonaceous materials. The HTC treatments were conducted at 220 °C for 3 h with or without the addition of acetic acid. The resulting hydrochar was characterized using several techniques, including thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and N2-physisorption analyzers. The study found that the masks formed a melt with reduced mass (−15%) and volume (up to −75%) under the applied conditions. The carbon content and higher heating value (HHV) of the produced hydrochars were higher than those of the original masks (+5%). Furthermore, when acetic acid was added during the HTC experiment, a new crystal phase, terephthalic acid, was produced. This acid is a precursor in surgical mask production. The study suggests that hydrothermal carbonization could potentially achieve sanitization and volume reduction in non-renewable and non-biodegradable surgical masks while also producing a solid fuel or a raw material for terephthalic acid production. Background & Aim: Hand disinfection methods are not germ-free, and infected hands transmit the infection. One of the personal protective equipment of the operating room is the mask, which will probably be contaminated by the hands when removing the mask. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of using automatic mask dispenser on the contamination of surgical masks in the operating room. Methods & Materials: The present study is a field experiment that was conducted on 120 hospital staff in Isfahan in 2021. The subjects were randomly divided into two groups of 60; automatic device and manual mask removal. The effect of contact of hands impregnated with fluorescent powder was measured during the removal of the mask in each group. Background: This study aims to investigate the impacts of surgical mask wearing on cardiopulmonary fitness using a six-minute walk test (6MWT) among older adults with hypertension. Methods: The 45 older adults with hypertension volunteers were recruited and randomized into a no mask wearing condition and a surgical mask wearing condition. All volunteers were investigated through submaximal exercise testing using a 6MWT. Cardiopulmonary parameters were measured before and after performing a 6MWT. Results: The results indicate post performance on the 6MWT for both the with and without surgical mask conditions significantly increased systolic blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, and oxygen saturation (SpO2) when compared to before performing a 6MWT. However, surgical masks resulted in no differences to systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, SpO2, and 6MWT distance when compared to no masks. In contrast, the surgical mask condition significantly increased perceived exertion when compared with the no mask condition (p < 0.05). Conclusion: This study indicates that surgical masks did not have an impact on cardiopulmonary fitness in older adults with hypertension.

Background and purpose: Wearing face masks has become popular during the COVID-19 pandemic as a measure to prevent the spread of the virus. Some studies have pointed out the intervening role of these masks in the effect of exercise on the cardiovascular system. This study aimed at examining and comparing the effects of masking (N95 respirators and surgical masks) and not wearing a mask during exercise on heart rate variability (HRV) parameters. Materials and methods: In this semi-experimental design, 15 healthy women were randomly placed into three groups: surgical mask, N95 respirators and no mask. The participants took part in a progressive running session and then two weeks of HIIT program (2-4 sets, 20-60 seconds with 15-60 seconds of rest between repetitions and 3-5 minutes between the sets) with 80-90% of HRmax. The time- and frequency-domain parameters of HRV were recorded during rest and recovery after exercises using electrocardiogram and then analyzed in Kubios HRV software. Results: Progressive running session before two weeks of HIIT training caused a significant decrease in parasympathetic time-domain parameter (RMSSD) and average RR in all groups in the fifth minute of recovery compared with rest values (P≤0.05). In addition, after HIIT training, sympathetic time-domain (SDNN) parameter and average RR significantly increased (P=0.01 and P=0.02, respectively) while a significant decrease was seen in the sympathetic frequency-domain (LF) parameter in rest and recovery compared with baseline values (P=0.01). No significant differences were observed between the two masked groups in parameters studied (P=0.43). Conclusion: Increase in parasympathetic parameters and decrease in sympathetic parameters improved HRV. Wearing surgical masks or N95 respirators during exercise did not have an intervening effect on the positive results of exercise, including improving the autonomic function of the heart and maintaining sympathovagal balance in healthy women.

The protection effects of wearing masks against viruses and bacteria have been verified many times over previous pandemics and infectious diseases. However, the supply of the surgical masks can barely meet the surging demand at the early stage (first 12 months) of the outbreak of a pandemic. Thus, it is essential to use surgical masks wisely in such urgent times. In this work, we selected two types of surgical masks and systematically explored how actual wearing time influences the protective performances of the masks. Each type of surgical masks was worn for 4, 10, 24, 32 and 48 h, respectively, and the results show that with the increase of actual wearing time, both particulate filtration efficiency (PFE) and bacterial filtration efficiency (BFE) of the masks decline. After wearing for 32 h, the PFEs of both types of masks were still far above the corresponding standard (≥30%, according to YY0469-2011). After wearing for 10 h, the BFEs of both masks were over 95% (which is regarded as the safe value), whereas after 24 and 32 h of wearing, the BFE of one type of mask decreased obviously to 91.6% and 80.0%, respectively. Background: We aimed to summarize and synthesize the current evidence regarding the indirect impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and its associated measures on the surgical site infection (SSI) rate compared with the pre-pandemic period. Methods: A computerized search was conducted on MEDLINE via PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus using the relevant keywords. Two-stage screening and data extraction were done. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) tools were used for the quality assessment. The Review Manager 5.4.1 program was used for the analysis. Results: Sixteen articles (n = 157,426 patients) were included. The COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown were associated with reduced risk of SSIs after surgery (odds ratio [OR], 0.65; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.56–0.75; p < 0.00001) and (OR, 0.49; 95% CI, 0.29–0.84; p = 0.009), respectively. There was no significant reduction in the SSIs rate after applying the extended use of masks (OR, 0.73; 95% CI, 0.30–1.73; p = 0.47). A reduction in the superficial SSI rate during the COVID-19 pandemic compared with the pre-COVID-19 pandemic period was observed (OR, 0.58; 95% CI, 0.45–0.75; p < 0.0001). Conclusions: The current evidence suggests that the COVID-19 pandemic may have some unexpected benefits, including improved infection control protocols, which resulted in reduced SSI rates, especially superficial SSIs.
