High internal phase emulsions (HIPEs) have been of great interest for fabricating fluorinated porous polymers having controlled pore structures and excellent physicochemical properties. However, it remains a challenge to prepare stable fluorocarbon HIPEs, due to the lack of suitable surfactants. By randomly grating hydrophilic and fluorophilic side chains to polyphosphazene (PPZ), a comb-like amphiphilic PPZ surfactant with biodegradability is designed and synthesized for stabilizing water/fluorocarbon oil-based emulsions. The hydrophilic-lipophilic balance of PPZs can be controlled by tuning the grating ratio of the two side chains, leading to the preparation of stable water-in-oil HIPEs and oil-in-water emulsions, and the production of fluorinated porous polymers and particles by polymerizing the oil phase. These fluorinated porous polymers show excellent thermal stability and, due to the hydrophobicity and porous structure, applications in the field of oil/water separation can be achieved.

The prevalence of "long COVID" is just one of the conundrums highlighting how little we know about the lung's response to viral infection, particularly to syndromecoronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), for which the lung is the point of entry. We used an in vitro human lung system to enable a prospective, unbiased, sequential single-cell level analysis of pulmonary cell responses to infection by multiple SARS-CoV-2 strains. Starting with human induced pluripotent stem cells and emulating lung organogenesis, we generated and infected three-dimensional, multi-cell-type-containing lung organoids (LOs) and gained several unexpected insights. First, SARS-CoV-2 tropism is much broader than previously believed: Many lung cell types are infectable, if not through a canonical receptor-mediated route (e.g., via Angiotensin-converting encyme 2(ACE2)) then via a noncanonical "backdoor" route (via macropinocytosis, a form of endocytosis). Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved endocytosis blockers can abrogate such entry, suggesting adjunctive therapies. Regardless of the route of entry, the virus triggers a lung-autonomous, pulmonary epithelial cell-intrinsic, innate immune response involving interferons and cytokine/chemokine production in the absence of hematopoietic derivatives. The virus can spread rapidly throughout human LOs resulting in mitochondrial apoptosis mediated by the prosurvival protein Bcl-xL. This host cytopathic response to the virus may help explain persistent inflammatory signatures in a dysfunctional pulmonary environment of long COVID. The host response to the virus is, in significant part, dependent on pulmonary Surfactant Protein-B, which plays an unanticipated role in signal transduction, viral resistance, dampening of systemic inflammatory cytokine production, and minimizing apoptosis. Exogenous surfactant, in fact, can be broadly therapeutic.

Severe cases of hydrocarbon aspiration requiring Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) are rarely reported in pediatrics, and 90% of hospitalized patients have a relatively benign clinical course. We describe a 14 month-old female with accidental hydrocarbon ingestion and aspiration due to organic makeup brush cleaner that suffered severe ARDS and multiorgan failure, successfully managed with ECMO and surfactant. She was decannulated after a total of 72 hours on ECMO, extubated on hospital day 15 (HD 15), and discharged home in her normal state of health after one month in the hospital. ECMO and adjunctive therapies such as surfactant may be helpful in the management of severe hydrocarbon pneumonitis and there are limited reports of ECMO as a supportive method for these pediatric patients.

Polymer single‐chain nanoparticles (SCNPs) have found a wide range of applications spanning catalysts, sensors and nanomedicine. The generation of structured SCNPs from star‐shaped polymers with diverse architectures and functionalities affords a new avenue to expand the emerging research area. The large‐scale synthesis of structured SCNPs is described by the electrostatics‐mediated intramolecular crosslinking of three types of 3‐armed star‐shaped polymers (T‐P4VP, T‐PS‐b‐P4VP, and T‐P4VP‐b‐PS), whose configuration is tunable from spherical to cage‐shaped to dumbbell‐shaped and star‐shaped. We provide a novel investigation that demonstrates the synthesis of silver-doped bismuth oxide (ABO), holmium-doped bismuth oxide (HBO), nanostructured bismuth oxide (BO), and silver-holmium co-doped bismuth oxide (CDBO) by a cost-effective and straightforward surfactant-assisted co-precipitation technique. In comparison to the BO, ABO, and HBO samples, the optical tests revealed that the CDBO sample exhibited superior photocatalytic characteristics. This is possibly attributed to the physical, optical, and structural properties of the material tailored by the synergistic effect of the adopted strategies, i.e., nanotechnology, oxygen vacancies, and co-doping. The microstructures, physicochemical properties, morphological characteristics, and compositional attributes of the synthesized materials were investigated using sophisticated characterization techniques. The intrinsic conductivity of the bismuth oxide was enhanced with the incorporation of Ag and Ho as co-dopants, as shown by the results obtained from two probe current-voltage experiments. The co-doped sample exhibited the highest efficacy in decomposing rhodamine B dye, with a degradation rate of 91 % during a mere 70-min exposure to W-lamp illumination. The most ideal settings for CDBO photocatalytic activities were identified by comprehensive parameter optimization research. These parameters include a basic pH, a catalyst dosage of 25 mg, a dye concentration of 15 ppm, and an operating temperature of 30 °C. The co-doped and nanostructured photocatalyst also showed an outstanding capability to break down orange II and phenol dye. The trapping experiments' results indicate that the hydroxyl and superoxide radicals play a significant role in the mineralization of the tested dye. Objective Administering surfactant timely and appropriately is important to minimize lung injury but remains challenging in preterm neonates with respiratory distress syndrome. The published literature supports that lung ultrasound (LUS) score can predict surfactant need. Neonatal LUS scanning specification and parameter setting guidelines have been recently published for standardization. However, variations in scanning protocols and machine settings hinder its clinical implementation widely. This observational study aims to internally validate the suggested LUS protocol in a neonatal intensive care unit to establish a correlation between LUS scores and surfactant need as the first step of integrating LUS in the clinical practice. Study Design LUS was performed on 40 eligible preterm neonates within 3 hours after birth or before surfactant administration between May 2020 and March 2021. The neonates were between 27 and 32 weeks' gestational age, and all had respiratory distress. Neonates with known congenital anomalies were excluded. A high-frequency linear probe was used to obtain LUS images from six lung zones which were scored using a 0 to 3 system, yielding a maximum of 18 points. Treating physicians were blinded to the LUS score. Receiver operating characteristic analysis determined the optimal LUS score cut-off for predicting surfactant need. Results Fifteen of the 40 neonates (38%) required higher oxygen fraction and received surfactant. In our cohort, an LUS score ≥10 was identified as the optimal cut-off for predicting surfactant need, with a sensitivity of 80% and specificity of 84%. The area under the curve was 0.8 (p = 0.0003). LUS predicted surfactant need at a median of 3.5 hours earlier than traditional clinical decision (p < 0.0037). Conclusion LUS is a helpful adjunct for predicting surfactant need in preterm neonates. This study describes an approach to implement the LUS protocol and score for clinical decision-making in the clinical practice. Background: At present, preterm infants with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) in China present higher mortality and morbidity rates than those in high-income countries. The aim of this nationwide survey was to assess the clinical management of RDS in China. Methods: A nationwide cross-sectional survey to assess adherence to RDS management recommendations was performed. One neonatologist per hospital was randomly selected. The primary outcome was the key care of RDS management. Results: Among the 394 participating hospitals, 88·3% were birthing centres. The number of doctors and nurses per bed were 0·27 and 0·72, respectively. Antenatal corticosteroids (any dose) were administered to 90% of the women at risk of preterm birth at < 34 weeks of gestation (90·0% inborn vs. 50·0% outborn, p < 0·001). The median fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO2) for initial resuscitation was 0·30 for babies born at ≤ 32 weeks of gestation and 0·25 for those born at > 32 weeks. T-piece resuscitators were available in 77·8% of delivery rooms (DRs) (tertiary hospitals: 82·5% vs. secondary hospitals: 63·0%, p < 0·001). Surfactant was used in 51·6% of the DRs. Less invasive surfactant administration (LISA) was used in 49·7% of the hospitals (tertiary hospitals: 55·3% vs. secondary hospitals: 31·5%, p < 0·001). Primary non-invasive ventilation was initiated in approximately 80·0% of the patients. High-frequency oscillation ventilation was primarily reserved for rescue after conventional mechanical ventilation (MV) failure. Caffeine was routinely used during MV in 59·1% of the hospitals. Bedside lung ultrasonography was performed in 54·3% of the health facilities (tertiary hospitals: 61·6% vs. secondary hospitals: 30·4%, p < 0·001). Qualified breast milk banks and Family Integrated Care (FICare) were present in 30·2% and 63·7% of the hospitals, respectively. Conclusions: Significant disparities in resource availability and guidelines adherence were evident across hospitals. Future strategies should address DR facilities and medication access, technical training, staff allocation, and ancillary facility development for a better management of RDS patients in China. Background: Less invasive surfactant administration (LISA) has become the preferred method of surfactant administration for spontaneously breathing babies on continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). Summary: The development of LISA followed the need to combine CPAP and surfactant replacement as mainstay treatment options for respiratory distress syndrome, thereby avoided exposure to positive pressure ventilation. Key Messages: This review summarises the current knowns and unknowns of LISA including the physiological concept, its relevance for short-term and long-term outcomes and the challenges for practical implementation of LISA as part of a less invasive respiratory care bundle. Nanoparticles provide a promising, cost-effective eco-friendly solution to the challenges posed by heavy-oil reservoirs, significantly enhancing oil recovery rates by reducing viscosity without requiring extensive thermal inputs. In this study, carbon nanospheres (CNSs) and functionalized-CNSs nanofluids were prepared by incorporating surfactants (T80 or BMIMCl). These nanofluids were evaluated for their efficacy in upgrading crude oil, particularly focusing on viscosity-reduction. Rheological tests were conducted across varying shear rates (60–300 s−1) and concentrations (0.02–3 wt.%) to comprehensively assess the impact of these additives on the crude oil's proprieties. The results showed a notable enhancement in crude oil viscosity reduction, with the following order observed: CNS-TiO2 < CNS-TiO2/DMIMCl < CNS-TiO2/T80, yielding reduction rates of 95%, 95.83%, and 97.08%, respectively, at an optimal dosage of 2.75 wt.% and a shear rate of 300 s−1. The surface functionalization of CNS particles and their crystallinity are the main mechanisms driving the reduction in oil viscosity. Moreover, the properties of the crude oil were investigated upon the utilization of CNS-TiO2/T80 nanofluid. It was found that this nanofluid led to a substantial reduction in sulfur content by 78.32% and a significant decrease in the percentage of heavier molecules, ranging from C12 to C35 and up to C36, with 47.76% and 97.98%, respectively. The economic competitiveness of 2G-bioethanol technology should improve through the improvement of the sugar release and the valorization of by-products, especially lignin. Thus, an integrated scheme with corncob was developed to produce ethanol using low dosages of cellulases and value-added products from the semi-simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSSF) residue. Enzymatic hydrolysis and SSSF of acid pretreated corncob (< 20 mesh and > 20 mesh) were carried out under cellulase dosages of 5, 10, and 15 FPU/g in the absence and presence of polyethylene glycol 1500 (PEG 1500). The SSSF residue was used to obtain lignosulfonate via sulfomethylation reaction and phenolic acids via alkaline hydrolysis using 4% (w/v) sodium hydroxide and 0–5% (v/v) hydrogen peroxide. Pretreated corncob < 20 mesh allowed the reduction of cellulase dosage to 5 FPU/g without compromising sugar release. The addition of PEG 1500 boosted sugar release, reaching 56.73 g/L glucose under 20% (w/v) solids. The maximum ethanol production of 31.64 g/L was obtained using 5 FPU/g cellulases, 2% (w/w) PEG 1500, and 20% (w/v) solids (gradual addition). FTIR confirmed the preparation of lignosulfonate from SSSF residue, and the surfactant showed good stabilization performance in oil/water systems (emulsification index≈30%). High yields of p-coumaric acid (8045.3 mg/100 g) and ferulic acid (1429.4 mg/100 g) were obtained in alkaline hydrolysis with 5% (v/v) hydrogen peroxide. The use of foam injection as an enhanced oil recovery (EOR) technique has been suggested since the 1960s to address issues with gas injection. Foam is composed of gas, water, and surfactant, which is utilized to stabilize the foam. This study investigates the synergy effect of anionic surfactant and two zwitterionic surfactants on enhancing solution stability. The anionic surfactant used is sodium dodecyl sulfate, while the chosen zwitterionic surfactants are cocamidopropy hydroxy sultine and Cocamido Propyl Betaine. Analyzing the images of the generated foam showed that initially, the small and uniform bubbles are formed in all concentrations. The foam size is then increased and in concentrations higher than a critical value, the bubbles grow faster which is likely due to the formation of micelles and deposition of surfactants. This leads to early collapse of the foam structure. The quantitative half-life results approved that the most optimal compound was obtained with equal proportions of sodium dodecyl sulfate and Cocamido Propyl Betaine with concentration of 3 wt% (1:1 ratio, 0.15 wt%-0.15 wt%). To quantitatively study on foam characteristics, conductivity and interfacial tension tests were performed. The results of the conductivity tests showed that micelles were formed in concentrations of more than 0.3 wt%. Interfacial tension measurements revealed that addition of a small amount of surfactants to the base solution, led to reduction of the interfacial tension value from 29.2 (mN/m) in base solution to less than 1 mN/m for solutions treated with surfactant. Aim: To analyse the evidence of non‐invasive neurally adjusted ventilatory assist (NIV‐NAVA) in preterm neonates compared to nasal continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP) or nasal intermittent positive pressure ventilation (NIPPV). Methods: We performed a systematic review and meta‐analysis of randomised controlled trials and included studies where NIV‐NAVA was analysed in preterm (<37 gestational weeks) born neonates. Our main outcomes were the need for endotracheal intubation, the need for surfactant therapy, and reintubation rates. Risk ratios (RRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. Results: A total of five studies were included. The endotracheal intubation rate was 25% in the NIV‐NAVA group and 26% in the nCPAP group (RR 0.91, CI: 0.56–1.48). The respective rates for surfactant therapy were 30% and 35% (RR 0.85, CI: 0.56–1.29). The reintubation rate in neonates previously invasively ventilated was 8% in the NIV‐NAVA group and 29% in the nCPAP/NIPPV group (RR 0.29, 95%CI: 0.10–0.81). Evidence certainty was rated as low for all outcomes. Conclusions: NIV‐NAVA as the primary respiratory support did not reduce the need for endotracheal intubation or surfactant therapy. Acidification is an important factor in the aging of paper literature. Since most of the paper is sized and the surface tension of water is high, it is usually difficult for aqueous phase deacidification agent to penetrate the paper resulting in uneven deacidification. The addition of surfactant can effectively reduce the liquid surface tension and enhance the effect of deacidification with wetting properties improvement. In this paper, polysorbate-80 and polyether-modified trisiloxane surfactants were added to sodium propionate aqueous deacidification agent separately, researching the effect of wettability on the paper literature deacidification by ultrasonic atomization. The results show that SP-TRSE is effective, the maximum enhancement of deacidification agent absorption after adding wetting additives is 238.20 %, the minimum standard deviation of water content and alkali reserve after treatment is 3.87 and 0.005 respectively, the maximum increase in the internal mass fraction of sodium is 0.29 %. The continuous deepening of coal-seam extraction has sharply increased both gas pressure and content. The use of viscoelastic surfactant fracturing fluids (VESFFs) has been demonstrated to effectively improve coal-seam permeability and mitigate the occurrence of gas disasters. After injection into coal, VESFFs interact with the coal and affect its surface characteristics. In this study, to characterize changes in zeta potential, oxygen-containing functional groups, and the microcrystalline structure of hard and soft coal surfaces under the influence of VESFFs with different formulations, zeta potential measurements and Fourier-transform infrared and Raman spectroscopies were performed. The VESFFs enhanced the electrostatic repulsion between the pore wall and coal particles, which is favorable for the removal of coal particles from hard and soft coal surfaces. The combination of cationic with zwitterionic viscoelastic surfactants (VESs) in the VESFFs exposed more hydrophilic functional groups on the surfaces of hard and soft coal, increasing wettability and affecting nanometer pores. A VESFF based on anionic and zwitterionic VESs as the primary agents could enhance the extension of the aromatic layer (La) of the aromatic crystal nuclei and reduce the interlayer spacing (d002) of hard and soft coal, thereby increasing the volume of micropores. This research offers theoretical guidance for optimizing the primary components of VESFFs and elucidates the mechanism through which VESFFs act on nanopores in coal from a microscopic perspective. Selecting the appropriate surfactant as a foaming agent is crucial in the production of foamed concrete. In this study, multiple technological approaches were employed for the investigation of the effect of three different types of surfactants as foaming agents; the approaches included surface tension measurement, zeta potential analysis, spectrophotometry, and nanoindentation. The results showed that the surface activity, solution viscosity, and environmental pH all influenced the generation and stability of foam in foaming agents. The adsorption process of surfactants onto cement particles was complex and could be effectively explained using the double-layer theory. The adsorption of anionic surfactant molecules on cement particles significantly altered the zeta potential, up to −17 mV, with an adsorption efficiency over 10 times greater than that of cationic surfactants and more than 5 times greater than that of nonionic surfactants. Furthermore, after cement hardening, the mechanical properties of the resulting pores were notably improved due to the presence of adsorbed anionic surfactants, and the maximum compressive strength could exceed 10 MPa. The respiratory tract acts as a crucial barrier influenced by environmental factors, particularly affecting the homeostasis of its mucous membranes. Environmental conditions, including climate and atmospheric composition, play a significant role in the development and progression of respiratory diseases such as bronchial asthma and allergic rhinitis. Various risk factors, including genetic predisposition, viral infections, allergen exposure, and pollutants, along with changes in the microbiome, are key determinants in the manifestation and progression of these diseases. Certain pollutants like ozone (O3), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and particulate matter (PM2.5) contribute to airway inflammation and hyperresponsiveness, potentially leading to increased oxidative stress and respiratory distress. This study aims to comparatively analyze the clinical characteristics and processes of free radical oxidation in the tissues of the respiratory tract of children with respiratory diseases living at different altitudes in Kyrgyzstan. A total of 209 children, including 104 with chronic respiratory diseases and 105 healthy controls, were examined. The study included clinical examinations, endoscopic evaluations, and biopsies when necessary. Biological samples such as exhaled air condensate and nasal lavages were collected to measure various biochemical indicators including total lipids, hydroperoxides, diene conjugates, and oxidative index. Preliminary results indicate that children residing at higher altitudes exhibit more pronounced changes in respiratory tissues, likely due to climatic and environmental factors specific to high-altitude regions. These children showed significantly higher levels of free radical oxidation products and altered surface tension in biological samples compared to those living at lower altitudes. Complaints such as shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, cough, and nasal congestion were also more frequent among children at higher altitudes. The study highlights the need for further research to better understand the impact of altitude on respiratory health and to develop effective strategies for the treatment and prevention of respiratory diseases in children. Future research should focus on the longitudinal tracking of respiratory health, detailed environmental assessments, and the development of targeted public health strategies to address the unique challenges faced by high-altitude populations. A porous structure of copolymer poly (aniline-co–o-phenylenediamine) has been fabricated by chemical oxidation process with nonionic surfactant Triton X-100. Different ratios of monomers (1:9, 5:5 and 9:1) have been utilized; structure and surface morphology has been analyzed by FTIR and SEM–EDX techniques. The UV, XRD and BET surface area measurement were also done. The electrochemical techniques such as cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance were used to evaluate electrochemical capacitance performances. The copolymer comprising equimolar mixture of monomers displayed high surface area that helps to amplify the diffusion of electrolyte ions. Hence, the specific capacitance of developed copolymer has been determined as 989 F g−1 at 5 mA cm−2 current density from galvanostatic charge–discharge studies with retainability of 84.94% capacitance after 100 cycles. Abstract\nNovelty statementPer- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) pose great risks to human health and the ecosystem, necessitating effective remediation strategies such as phytoremediation. Surfactants, due to their ability to increase the bioavailability of hydrophobic contaminants, are considered as potential agents to improve phytoremediation for PFAS. In this research, we explored the impact of four surfactants (sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), rhamnolipid, Triton X-100, and Glucopone 600 CS UP) on plant growth and the uptake of PFAS by red fescue over 110 days. The results showed that while surfactants at lower concentrations did not negatively affect plant growth, the highest dose (2,500 mg/kg) significantly reduced the dry weight of plant shoots. Although none of the four surfactants led to an increased overall removal efficiency of ∑PFAS by red fescue over 110 days, SDS did enhance the uptake of PFAS compounds with long carbon chain lengths. With SDS addition at 2,500 mg/kg, the average fold increases of long chain PFAS removal were 1.99 for perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), 2.44 for perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA), 2.11 for perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA), 1.52 for perfluoroundecanoic acid (PFUnA), 1.88 for perfluorohexanesulphonic acid (PFHxS), and 2.97 for perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS). The research indicated that using surfactants, such as SDS at appropriate doses could improve phytoremediation effectiveness in mitigating long-chain PFAS, which is a known challenge in soil remediation.This study proposed an approach to accelerate plant uptake and removal of long chain PFAS. The improved removal of long chain PFAS coupled with less plant biomass by amending soil with SDS at a proper dose potentially increases the attractiveness of phytoremediation. The residual oil left behind after water flooding in petroleum reservoirs can be mobilized by surfactant formulations that yield ultralow interfacial tension (IFT) with oil. However, finding ultralow IFT surfactant formulations is difficult for high-temperature, off-shore, carbonate reservoirs. These reservoirs are often water-flooded with seawater (with a lot of divalent ions), which is often incompatible with many surfactants at high temperatures. The goal of this research is to develop a surfactant formulation for an off-shore carbonate reservoir at 100°C previously flooded by seawater. Surfactant-oil-brine phase behavior was studied for formulations, starting from a single surfactant to mixtures of surfactants and a co-solvent. Mixtures of three surfactants and one co-solvent were needed to produce ultralow IFT formulations for the oil of interest. The surfactant system with polymer mobility control was tested in crushed reservoir rock packs. The cumulative oil recovery was >99% for the surfactant-polymer (SP) flood with an optimal salinity gradient. The constant salinity SP floods with seawater increased oil recovery significantly beyond the water flood (cumulative oil recovery >91%), even though the recovery was lower than that of the optimal salinity gradient SP flood. This study confirms the sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) surfactant is effective to enhance water electrolysis performance especially when combined with NaCl. The water electrolysis experiment on different concentrations of SLS and SLS-NaCl mixture electrolyte were performed. The results indicate the presence of NaCl is more effective to enhance the SLS containing electrolyte performance instead of adding more SLS concentration. More SLS concentration is effective to enhance hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) when NaCl is added. The effectiveness of NaCl is shown by the order of final HER SLS 0.5 M + NaCl 3.9212 × 10−7 Mol. L−1, SLS 0.3 M + NaCl 3.8789 × 10−7 Mol. L−1, and, SLS 0.5 M 3.6758 × 10−7 Mol. L−1. The SLS creates positively charged micelles which increases ion mobility and HER. The NaCl accelerates the HER due to the formation of smaller ion clusters that react more quickly with the cathode. Therefore, this study reveals the mechanism of electrolysis enhancement by surfactant mixed electrolyte. To address the challenges of difficulty and low penetration speed of aqueous deacidification agents in paper, we aimed to enhance the wetting performance of these agents by incorporating a surfactant. We selected four surfactants for our study: anionic sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS), cationic cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), nonionic polysorbate-80 (TW80), and polyether-modified trisiloxane (TRSE). The wetting properties of these surfactants on sodium propionate aqueous deacidification agent, the alkali stability of the solution, and the effects of moist heat aging on paper durability were explored. The results demonstrated that TRSE exhibited superior performance compared to the other three surfactants, effectively reducing the surface tension of sodium propionate solution to 21.02 mN/m. In alkaline conditions with a pH range of 8.00–10.00, the surface tension of SDBS, CTAB, and TW80 solutions remained stable for 30 days. Similarly, under weakly alkaline conditions with a pH value below 9, the surface tension of TRSE solutions exhibited stability. It should be noted that SDBS accelerated the decline of paper tensile index and whiteness during the heat and humidity aging process; at the same time, CTAB, TW80, and TRSE had no noticeable adverse effects on paper aging resistance. Geopolymer foam concrete (GFC), an emerging thermal insulation material known for its environmentally friendly and low-carbon attributes, has gained prominence for its use in bolstering building energy efficiency. A critical challenge in GFC production is foam destabilization by the alkaline environment in which foam is supersaturated with salt. In this study, GFC was prepared by using triterpene saponin (TS), sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS), and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as blowing agents, with fly ash as the precursor and calcium carbide slag (CA) combined with Glauber's salt (GS, Na2SO4 ≥ 99%) as the activator. The effect of GFC on mechanical properties was analyzed by examining its fluidity, pore structure, dry density, and compressive strength. The results show that TS has a stable liquid film capable of adapting to the adverse effects of salt supersaturation and alkaline environments. TS is highly stable in the GFC matrix, and so the corresponding pore size is small, and the connectivity is low in the hardened GFC. In addition, the hydration products of GFC exhibit different morphologies depending on the surfactant used. The traditional techniques for the synthesis of nickel phyllosilicates usually time-consuming and energy-intensive, which often lead to the formation of layers with excessive thickness due to uncontrolled crystal growth. In order to overcome these challenges, this work introduces a microwave-assisted synthesis strategy to facilitate the synthesis of Ni-phyllosilicate-based catalysts within an exceptionally short duration of only five minutes, attaining a peak temperature of merely 102 °C. To enhance the specific surface area and to increase the exposure of active sites, an investigation was conducted involving three surfactants. The employment of hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) has yielded remarkable results, with an ultrahigh specific surface area reaching 535 m2 g−1 and an ultrathin lamellar thickness of 1.43 nm. The catalyst exhibited an impressive CO 2 conversion of 81.7 % at 400 °C, 60 L g−1 h−1, 0.1 MPa. It also demonstrated a substantial turnover frequency for CO 2 (TOF CO2) of 5.4 ± 0.1 × 10−2 s−1, alongside a relatively low activation energy (E a) of 80.74 kJ·mol−1. Moreover, the catalyst maintained its high stability over a period of 100 h and displayed high resistance to sintering. To further elucidate growth temperature gradient of the catalyst and concentration gradient of the materials involved, COMSOL Multiphysics (COMSOL) simulations were effectively utilized. In conclusion, this work breaks the limitation associated with traditional, laborious synthesis methods for Ni-phyllosilicates, which can produce materials with high surface area and thin-layer characteristics. An efficient and scalable Buchwald‐Hartwig amination towards the synthesis of the API candidate 4‐((2‐Chlorophenyl)amino)‐6‐((6‐methylpyridin‐2‐yl)amino)nicotinamide as a JAK inhibitor was described. The process was developed using water and a water‐miscible co‐solvent. It was facilitated by the benign by design surfactant TPGS‐750‐M, that promoted the robust and reliable preparation of our target compound in high yields, with improved reaction profile and via an operationally simple protocol. This study is aimed at determining the biodegradation potential of n-hexadecane by three bacterial strains (Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis, and Bacillus Paralicheniformis) isolated from seawater contaminated with petroleum. The effects of parameters, including the surfactant (Tween 20, Tween 80, and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)), concentration (1-4 CMC (critical micelle concentration)), n-hexadecane concentration (0.5-5%), and bacterial consortium volume (5-20 mL), were investigated on the biodegradation of n-hexadecane. Finally, intermediate compounds resulting from the biodegradation of n-hexadecane were determined. Based on the results, the highest biodegradation of n-hexadecane (80.34%) was obtained in Tween 80 surfactant after 21 days compared to SDS (46.17%) and Tween 20 (72.97%) surfactants. The lowest and highest biodegradation of n-hexadecane (%) at the end of day 21 was obtained at concentrations of 1 (80.14%) and 4 (90.82%) CMC of Tween 80 surfactant, respectively. The biodegradation of n-hexadecane (%) significantly increased (98.8%) at the end of 21 days when the bacterial consortium was utilized in high volume (20 mL). The highest biodegradation of n-hexadecane (%) occurred at a concentration of 0.5% and reached 99.12% after 70 days. In addition, the Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain biodegraded n-hexadecane better after 21 days (25.15%) compared to Bacillus subtilis (20.5%) and Bacillus Paralicheniformis (16.8%). Biodegradation of n-hexadecane by these bacteria produced n-tridecane-1-ol, 2-hexadecanol, n-hexadecanoic acid, and 1-hexadecanol as intermediates. Present work involves lycopene extraction from tomato using surfactant L62 and separation of the same using cloud point extraction. The maximum extraction efficiency of lycopene from tomatoes (step I) was 54% (w/w) at optimized conditions (dilution distilled water/tomato puree = 1:1, surfactant concentration = 3% (v/v), temperature = 30 ℃, mixing intensity = 110 rpm, time = 50 min), which is significantly higher than the reported methods employing surfactant based systems. Further concentration of lycopene into the coacervate phase was carried out using CPE. The maximum CPE efficiency (step II) of 96% (w/w) was obtained with 3% L62 (v/v) at a temperature of 85 °C (time 30 min). The present process would eliminate the additional step required for back-extraction of lycopene as L62 is used for external applications in humans. Stability test suggest surfactant (L62) shows protective behavior towards lycopene in surfactant phase against degradation/isomerization for greater time at 30 ℃. The techno-economic study suggests that the project is profitable (NPV = 0.78 million of, discounted payback period of 3.7 years). Introduction: Surfactant therapy has revolutionized the management of respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) in preterm neonates, significantly improving outcomes for this vulnerable population. When assessing the need for surfactant in preterm infants, especially those whose mothers received antenatal steroids, it is crucial to understand the interplay between these two interventions. Antenatal corticosteroids are known to enhance fetal lung maturation and reduce the incidence and severity of RDS. However, despite this benefit, some preterm infants still develop RDS, potentially necessitating surfactant administration. This article explores the factors influencing surfactant requirements in preterm neonates whose mothers have undergone antenatal steroid therapy, aiming to clarify the role of surfactant in this context and optimise neonatal care strategies. Aim and objective: To access the need of surfactant in preterm babies whose mother received antenatal steroids. Material and methods: The present observational study was conducted in Paediatric outpatient department of Acharya Shri Chander College of Medical Sciences and Hospitals and included a total of 121 babies who were delivered in the hospital over a period of three months, w.e.f. 1st April, 2024 to 31st June, 2024. The data was collected with the help of a structured clinical pro-forma. The collected data was recorded in Microsoft Excel sheet and statistical analysis was done with the help of SPSS version 21.0. Result: In our study, a total of 121 babies were delivered to 109 women in the study period with 97 singleton, 12 twins and no triplet or quadruple deliveries. All records were available and retrieved within the study period where only 43 babies were delivered prematurely between 26 weeks to 34 weeks and the majority of the babies 27 were born at 32-34 weeks of gestation (62.8%), followed by 14 babies were delivered at 28-32 weeks (32.6%), followed by 2 were delivered between 26-28 weeks (4.6%). Out of 43 babies, 24 babies (55.8%) were exposed to full course of dexamethasone antenatally and 7 babies (16.3%) received single dose of antenatal corticosteroids and remaining 12 babies (27.9%) were delivered prematurely didn’t receive antenatal corticosteroids. There was no baby who received a repeat course of antenatal corticosteroids. And it was found that out of 24 babies who received full course of antenatal corticosteroids developed respiratory distress and 18 required surfactant administration and rest 6 babies were managed only on CPAP mode of ventilation. Conclusion: The present study concludes reinforced the rationale behind the common practice of giving antenatal corticosteroids in preterm birth and also demonstrated the decrease in respiratory distress syndrome and use of surfactant for lung compliance. Objective In order to solve the problems such as too stable traditional foam and difficulty in defoaming.Method Using N-dodecyl-1,3-propanediamine and temperature and salt tolerant anionic surfactant to prepare a CO2 responsive temperature and salt tolerance composite foam system, and uses molecular simulation to explore the stability and response mechanism of the composite foam. Results Results show that N-dodecyl-1,3-propanediamine has good protonation and salt tolerance properties. However, its temperature tolerance is poor, and it does not have response performance. After compounding with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and sodium dodecyl sulfate, the foaming speed at high temperature is increased by 40%, the foam duration is 3.17 times longer than that before compounding, the temperature resistance is significantly improved, and the foam is defoamed rapidly within a short period after passing CO2. Molecular simulation studies reveal that the S atomic groups contained in SDS will combine with the positively charged N atomic groups in C12N(CH3)N(CH3)2 and lose surface activity, resulting in poor stability of the foam, which is also responsible for the responsive defoaming. Conclusion The composite system has good temperature and salt resistance and responsiveness, and can realize responsive defoaming after foam drainage and gas production in harsh environments which has broad application prospects. In the present work, the volumetric and conductometric studies to find the interactions between amino acids DL-Valine and DL-Serine with cationic and anionic surfactants, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) in aqueous solutions at different temperatures and atmospheric pressure were carried out. The effect of pre- and post-micellar concentrations of surfactants on the physicochemical properties was also studied. The densities measured experimentally were used to calculate the thermodynamic parameters such as the apparent molar volumes, ϕv, partial molar volumes, , transfer volumes, (tr), and partial molar expansibilities, at temperatures from 288.15 to 303.15 K while the conductivity data obtained at different temperatures from 293.15 to 318.15 K were used to obtain the molar conductivities () as well as limiting molar conductivities () from specific conductivities (κ) which reflect the interaction prevailing within the studied systems. Objectives: The objective of the present study was to develop natural excipient-based solid lipid nanoparticles (SLN) of butenafine hydrochloride (BUTE) using a modified solvent emulsification technique and to evaluate the competence of aloe vera nanolipidgel in enhancing the penetration of BUTE. Materials and Methods: BUTE-SLNs were prepared using a 23 factorial design to correlate the effect of formulation components on the BUTE)SLN. Particle size, polydispersity index (PDI), zeta potential, entrapment performance, and drug loading were assessed in the formed SLNs. The fabricated BUTE-SLN was evaluated for transmission electron microscopy, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and X-ray diffraction study studies and revealed the encapsulation of BUTE in lipid in the amorphous state. BUTE-SLN-based aloe vera gel was formulated and evaluated compared with the marketed product with respect to primary skin irritation, hydration, skin permeation, and antifungal activity. Results: The BUTE-SLN aloe vera gel, optimized for its formulation, features excellent slip properties and controlled drug release. DSC and XRD studies confirm its amorphous nature with effective drug entrapment. The gel provides enhanced skin deposition, improved antifungal activity, and reduced irritation. This makes it a cost-effective and innovative alternative to traditional dosage forms. BUTE-SLN promisingly showed no irritation, higher hydrating potential, slow and sustained release, and enhanced antifungal activity. With an aim to target deeper skin strata, minimize the side effects of drugs and symptomatic impact of fungal infection, and shorten the duration of therapy, BUTE-SLN was successfully prepared. The mean particle size and PDI were 261.25 ± 2.38 nm and 0.268 ± 0.01, respectively. Lubricant oils are largely responsible for environmental contamination and surfactants can hopefully improve the bioremediation process in soils contaminated with this kind of waste. However, to date only a few studies have elucidated how different surfactants affect the bioremediation process in oil-contaminated soils using the bioaugmentation technique. Thus, this study aimed to compare the effects of surfactants on the bioremediation process of waste lubricant oil in soil in association or not with bioaugmentation. Three biostimulating agents were tested: a chemical detergent, a synthetic surfactant, and a biosurfactant (rhamnolipid). The bioaugmentation process with Pseudomonas aeruginosa showed a faster biodegradation activity with total biodegradation on 181 day after application. The biosurfactant increased the number of microbial and fungal colonies leading to high biodegradation levels and a quicker treatment with or without the bioaugmentation. Bioaugmentation associated with biosurfactant reached 30.43 mg of CO2 of production on 181 day (90% of total biodegradation of waste lubricant oil) and reduced soil toxicity to 30%. Therefore, results showed that the association of biosurfactant and bioaugmentation with P. aeruginosa represents an ecologically viable strategy for bioremediation of soils contaminated with waste lubricant oil. The goal of this work was to develop acrylonitrile–butadiene (NBR) elastomer composites filled with hydroxyapatite (HAP) characterized by improved cure characteristics and resistance to burning. Silane, i.e., (3-aminopropyl)-triethoxysilane, ionic liquid, i.e., 1-decyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide and surfactant, i.e., cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, were used to improve the filler's dispersibility in the elastomer matrix and to reduce the time and temperature of vulcanization. The effects of HAP and dispersants on the cure characteristics, crosslink density and physico–chemical properties of NBR composites were explored. The additives used, especially the ionic liquid and surfactant, effectively improved the dispersion of HAP in the NBR matrix. The amount of HAP and the dispersant used strongly affected the cure characteristics and crosslink density of NBR. The optimal vulcanization time significantly increased with HAP content and was pronouncedly reduced when ionic liquid and surfactant were applied. In addition, ionic liquid and surfactant significantly lowered the onset vulcanization temperature and improved the crosslink density and hardness of the vulcanizates while impairing their elasticity. HAP and dispersants did not significantly affect the damping properties or chemical resistance of NBR vulcanizates. Above all, application of HAP considerably enhanced the resistance of vulcanizates to thermo-oxidative aging and reduced their flammability compared with the unfilled NBR. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Protein denaturation and aggregation resulting from the effects of interfacial stress, often enhanced by flow and shear stress, pose significant challenges in the production of therapeutic proteins and monoclonal antibodies. The influence of flow on protein stability is closely intertwined with interfacial effects. In this study, we have developed a microfluidic device capable of exposing low volume (< 320 µL) protein solutions to highly uniform shear. To disentangle the synergistic impact of flow and interfaces on protein aggregation, we fabricated two devices composed of different materials, namely poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and stainless steel. Upon application of shear, we observed formation of protein particles in the micron-size range. Notably, The number of particles generated in the steel devices was ∼ 3.5 fold lower than in the PMMA device, hinting at an interface-mediated effect. With increasing the protein concentration from 1 to 50 mg/mL we observed a saturation in the amount of aggregates, further confirming the key role of solid-liquid interfaces in inducing particle formation. Introduction of non-ionic surfactants prevented protein aggregation, even at the highest tested protein concentration and low surfactant concentrations of 0.05 mg/mL. Overall, our findings corroborate the synergistic impact of shear and interface effects on protein aggregation. The device developed in this study offers a small-scale platform for assessing the stability of antibody formulations throughout various stages of the development and manufacturing process. Amphotericin B (AmB) is the gold standard for antifungal therapy; however, its poor solubility limits its administration via intravenous infusion. A promising formulation strategy to achieve an oral formulation is the development of amorphous solid dispersions (ASDs) via spray-drying. Inclusion of surfactants into ASDs is a newer concept, yet it offers increased dissolution opportunities when combined with a polymer (HPMCAS 912). We developed both binary ASDs (AmB:HPMCAS 912 or AmB:surfactant) and ternary ASDs (AmB:HPMCAS 912:surfactant) using a variety of surfactants to determine the optimal surfactant carbon chain length and functional group for achieving maximal AmB concentration during in vitro dissolution. The ternary ASDs containing surfactants with a carbon chain length of 14 ± 2 carbons and a sulfate functional group increased the dissolution of AmB by 90-fold compared to crystalline AmB. These same surfactants, when added to a binary ASD, however, were only able to achieve up to a 40-fold increase, alluding to a potential interaction occurring between excipients or excipient and drug. This potential interaction was supported by dynamic light scattering data, in which the ternary formulation produced a single peak at 895.2 dnm. The absence of more than one peak insinuates that all three components are interacting in some way to form a single structure, which may be preventing AmB self-aggregation, thus improving the dissolution concentration of AmB. Amphiphilic peptides hold great potential as drug delivery systems. A popular peptide design approach has been to place amino acids in the peptide sequence based on their known properties. On the other hand, the directed discovery approach aims to screen a sequence space for a desired property. However, screening amphiphilic peptides for desirable drug delivery properties is not possible without a quantity that is predictive of these properties. We studied the predictive power of critical aggregation concentration (CAC) values on the drug delivery performance of a series of amphiphilic peptides with different hydrophobic tails and close CAC values. The CAC values were predicted by our previously developed model and doxorubicin was used as a model hydrophobic drug. All peptides showed close drug loading, entrapment efficiency, and release profile. They also formed similar spherical particles by assembling in reverse β -sheet arrangements regardless of drug presence. Moreover, the assembled particles were able to accumulate doxorubicin inside ordinary as well as drug-resistant breast cancer cells and enhance its toxicity up to 39 and 17 folds, respectively. It can be concluded that similar drug delivery properties displayed by the peptides can be attributed to their similar hydrophilic-lipophilic balance as reflected in their close CAC values. Décrire l'incidence, les facteurs de risque, les facteurs associés ainsi que l'évolution à court terme de l'hémorragie pulmonaire (HP) dans une population d'extrême prématuré. Étude rétrospective cas témoin incluant 33 prématurés < 29 SA ayant présenté une HP au cours du premier mois de vie, du 1er septembre 2014 au 30 juillet 2017. Chaque enfant a été apparié à un nouveau-né, né le plus proche chronologiquement, de même sexe, même terme et même poids de naissance. Les données concernant l'évolution jusqu'à la sortie d'hospitalisation ont été collectées. Sur cette période, la prévalence de l'hémorragie pulmonaire était de 7 %. L'âge gestationnel (AG) moyen était de 25 + 0 SA, le poids de naissance moyen de 760 g, identiques dans les deux groupes. En analyse univariée, une cure incomplète de corticoïdes (< 2 doses) en anténatale (p = 0,01), le recours à l'OHF (p < 0,001), au NO (p = 0,01) et à la dopamine (p < 0,01) étaient des facteurs associés à HP. En analyse multivariée, l'absence de cure complète de corticoïdes en anténatale reste un facteur de risque de survenue d'HP (p = 0,04). Les données concernant le canal artériel ne sont pas différentes entre les 2 groupes tout comme la durée de ventilation invasive, les taux de DBP à 36 SA corrigée, d'ECUN et d'infections secondaires. Il existe une surmortalité dans le groupe HP (60,6 vs 12,1 %) avec une augmentation de la survenue des hémorragies intraventriculaire (HIV) 3 et 4, (60,6 vs 18,2 %). To describe the incidence, associated factors and risk factors, the short-term course for the occurrence and death of pulmonary hemorrhage in the population of premature extremes. This was a retrospective case-control study involving 33 premature infants < 29 weeks who had HP during the first month of life, frome 1st september 2014 to 30th July 2017. A control was selected for each case: the closest chronologically born, child of the same gestational age, same gender and similar weight at birth. The data concerning the evolution until the discharge of hospitalization were collected. The prevalence of pulmonary hemorrhage was 7 %. Mean gestational age (GA) was 25 ± 0 weeks, the average birth weight was 760 g in both groups. In univariate analysis, an incomplete course of corticosteroids (< 2 doses) in antenatal (P = 0.01), the use of HFOV (P < 0.001), NO (P = 0.01) and dopamine (P < 0.01) were factors associated with HP. In multivariate analysis, the absence of a complete course of corticosteroids in the antenatal period remains a risk factor for the occurrence of HP (P = 0.04). The arterial duct data were not different between the 2 groups, as was the duration of invasive ventilation, bronchopulmonary dysplasia at 36 weeks corrected, necrotizing enterocolitis, and secondary infections. There is excess mortality in the HP group (60.6 vs. 12.1 %) with an increase in the occurrence of intraventricular haemorrhage ¾ (60.6 % vs. 18.2 %). In the HP population, risk factors associated with death are male (P < 0.01) and lower pH at birth (P < 0.02). Low AG and very early surfactant administration appear to be more common in deceased infants without these differences being significant (P = 0.06). Pulmonary hemorrhage is associated with high mortality in the population of premature extremes. Incomplete antenatal corticosteroids and the male sex appear to be a risk factor of death of HP. The thermodynamic effect of octyl-β-D-glucopyranoside (OGP) on the formation of methane-1,3-dimethylcyclohexane (DMCH) hydrate was studied in this work. The thermodynamic equilibrium hydrate formation pressures between 275.15 K and 283.15 K were measured by the isothermal pressure search method. Different OGP aqueous solutions (0, 0.1, and 1 wt%) were used in this work. The experimental results show that OGP had no obvious thermodynamic inhibition on methane-DMCH hydrate formation when its concentration was low (0.1 wt%), whereas it had an inhibition on methane-DMCH hydrate formation when its concentration was high (1 wt%). The phase equilibrium hydrate formation pressure of the methane-DMCH-OGP system is about 0.1 MPa higher than that of the methane-DMCH system. The dissociation enthalpies of methane hydrate in different solutions remained uniform, which indicates that OGP was not involved in methane-DMCH hydrate formation. This phenomenon is explained from the perspective of the molecular structure of OGP. As a renewable and biological nonionic surfactant, the concentration of OGP in the liquid phase is low, so OGP can be added to the methane-DMCH system without significant thermodynamic inhibition. Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) has recently gained interest as a potential candidate for small-scale thermoelectric conversion because of the facile doping, solution processability, and flexibility. However, the practical applications of PEDOT:PSS are limited by its comparatively low figure of merit (ZT) compared with inorganic thermoelectric materials. Herein, to further improve the thermoelectric properties of PEDOT:PSS, we investigated the role of the addition of surfactants, sodium dodecyl sulfate, sodium dodecyl benzenesulfonate (SDBS) or Triton X-100, to the PEDOT:PSS free-standing films on their thermoelectric properties. We showed that the addition of the surfactant improved the film crystallinity, significantly improving the electrical conductivity. The highest conductivity was obtained for anionic surfactant SDBS at a 0.94 wt% concentration. Moreover, the inclusion of the surfactant reduced the thermal conductivity while maintaining a relatively constant Seebeck coefficient, consequently improving the ZT value. Furthermore, a flexible thermoelectric device crafted from the as-fabricated PEDOT:PSS/SDBS sheets was developed to explore the potential applications of wearable electronics using low-grade thermal energy. Given that particle and bubble size, as well as their surface properties, are pivotal in froth flotation, surfactants have been extensively employed due to their impact on bubble size and froth stabilization. This study aimed to investigate the influence of surfactants on the performance of apatite flotation in column. Three different categories of surfactants were examined: anionic, amphoteric, and nonionic, specifically Lupromin, Genagen, and Triton X-100, respectively. The critical coalescence concentration (CCC) and surface tension of each surfactant were determined. The impact of these surfactants on reducing bubble size was quantified, and their subsequent effects on apatite flotation in a column were assessed. The most favorable flotation response for Genagen was achieved at CCC and pH 11, resulting in the highest apatite recovery and the smallest bubble size. For Triton X-100, the best condition was attained at ¼ CCC and pH 11. However, overall, Lupromin was the surfactant that yielded the best flotation results (at ¼ CCC and pH 11). Introduction: Common major co-formulants in glyphosate-based herbicides, polyethoxylated tallow amine surfactants, are suspected of being more toxic than glyphosate, contributing to the toxicity in humans. However, limited information exists on using polyethoxylated tallow amine concentrations to predict clinical outcomes. We investigated if plasma concentrations of glyphosate, its metabolite and polyethoxylated tallow amines can predict acute kidney injury and case fatality in glyphosate poisoning. Methods: We enrolled 151 patients with acute glyphosate poisoning between 2010 and 2013. Plasma concentrations of glyphosate, its metabolite, aminomethylphosphonic acid, and polyethoxylated tallow amines were determined in 2020 using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Associations between exposure and poisoning severity were assessed. Results: Plasma concentrations of glyphosate and aminomethylphosphonic acid demonstrated good and moderate performances in predicting acute kidney injury (≥2), with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.83 (95% CI 0.69–0.97) and 0.76 (95% CI 0.59–0.94), respectively. Polyethoxylated tallow amines were detected in one-fifth of symptomatic patients, including one of four fatalities and those with unsaturated tallow moieties being good indicators of acute kidney injury (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve ≥0.7). As the number of repeating ethoxylate units in tallow moieties decreased, the odds of acute kidney injury increased. Glyphosate and aminomethylphosphonic acid concentrations were excellent predictors of case fatality (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve >0.9). Discussion: The 2.7% case fatality rate with 49% acute, albeit mild, acute kidney injury following glyphosate poisoning is consistent with previously published data. A population approach using model-based metrics might better explore the relationship of exposure to severity of poisoning. Conclusions: Plasma concentrations of glyphosate and its metabolite predicted the severity of clinical toxicity in glyphosate poisoning. Thermal recovery techniques for producing oil sands have substantial environmental impacts. Surfactants can efficiently improve thermal bitumen recovery and reduce the required amount of steam. Such a technique requires solid knowledge about the interaction mechanism between surfactants, bitumen, water, and rock at the nanoscale level. In particular, oil sands ores have extremely complex mineralogy as they contain many clay minerals (montmorillonite, illite, kaolinite). In this study, molecular dynamics simulation is carried out to elucidate the unclear mechanisms of clay minerals contributing to the bitumen recovery under a steameanionic surfactant co-injection process. We found that the clay content significantly influenced an oil detachment process from hydrophobic quartz surfaces. Results reveal that the presence of montmorillonite, illite, and the siloxane surface of kaolinite in nanopores can enhance the oil detachment process from the hydrophobic surfaces because surfactant molecules have a stronger tendency to interact with bitumen and quartz. Conversely, the gibbsite surfaces of kaolinite curb the oil detachment process. Through interaction energy analysis, the siloxane surfaces of kaolinite result in the most straightforward oil detachment process. In addition, we found that the clay type presented in nanopores affected the wettability of the quartz surfaces. The quartz surfaces associated with the gibbsite surfaces of kaolinite show the strongest hydrophilicity. By comparing previous experimental findings with the results of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we observed consistent wetting characteristics. This alignment serves to validate the reliability of the simulation outcomes. The outcome of this paper makes up for the lack of knowledge of a surfactant-assisted bitumen recovery process and provides insights for further in-situ bitumen production engineering designs. Present study determines the Critical Micelle Concentration (CMC) of some market available detergents at different temperatures in aqueous solutions. For this study we use Sunlight Surf and Safed Surf. Sodium Acetate Electrolyte was used. Conductance data was taken at different temperatures (15°C, 25°C, 35°C). From this study it was observed that with increase in temperature, cmc value decreases. Addition of electrolyte with surfactants (detergent), decrease cmc value which support our basic concept of surface chemistry. Using lignocellulosic materials as a feedstock to produce ethanol is an alternative to cleaner energy production. The pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis steps play a role in breaking down the lignocellulosic structure and making the sugars available for fermentation. Non-ionic surfactants have been included in the cellulosic ethanol production process to increase ethanol titers. Non-ionic surfactants commonly contribute to the enzymatic digestion of lignocelluloses, but there are doubts about whether they are beneficial or harmful in the pretreatment and ethanol fermentation steps. This study evaluated Tween 80 (polysorbate 80) in pretreatment, enzymatic hydrolysis, and fermentation with Saccharomyces cerevisiae PE2 to obtain ethanol from green coconut fiber (GCF). To reduce the GCF's recalcitrance and to increase enzyme accessibility, the material was pretreated using steam explosion (severity factor of 3.71 and 4.24), alkaline (sodium hydroxide), and sequential steam explosion/alkaline pretreatment in the presence of the surfactant. The surfactant did not increase delignification in steam explosion pretreatment, but it increased the sugar release when compared to the pretreatments without Tween 80. The addition of the surfactant during enzymatic hydrolysis increased glucose production in all experiments. Adsorption experiments showed that Tween 80 increased enzymatic activity. The highest glucose production was 20.31 ± 0.48 g/L and cellulosic conversion of 65.12% after adding 1.0% (w/v) Tween 80 in sequential steam explosion/alkaline pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis. Simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) and semi-simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSSF) strategies were investigated with the surfactant addition. When 2.0% (w/v) Tween 80 was added in all fermentations, it hindered ethanol production. A fed-batch SSSF and nonisothermal-fed-batch-SSSF were also performed, along with an enzyme fed-batch strategy. The highest ethanol concentration achieved was 48.21 ± 1.13 g/L by adding 1.0% (w/v) Tween 80 to the nonisothermal-fed-SSSF with 30% (w/v) solid loading. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A soft-core oil-in-water (o/w) nanoemulsion (NE) is composed of nanometer (nm) sized oil droplets, stabilized by a surfactant layer and dispersed in a continuous bulky water phase. Characterization of the o/w NE molecule arrangements non-invasively, particularly the drug phase distribution (DPD) and its correlation to oil globule size (OGS), remains a challenge. Here we demonstrated the analytical methods of intact 19F Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and 1H diffusion ordered spectroscopy (DOSY) NMR for their specificity in measuring DPD and OGS, respectively, on three NE formulations containing the active ingredient difluprednate (DFPN) at the same concentration. The results illustrated synchronized molecular rearrangement reflected in the DPD and OGS upon alterations in formulation. Addition of surfactant resulted in a higher DPD in the surfactant layer, and concomitantly smaller OGS. Mechanic perturbation converted most of the NE globules to the smaller thermodynamically stable microemulsion (ME) globules, changing both DPD and OGS to ME phase. These microstructure changes were not observed using 1D 1H NMR; and dynamic light scattering (DLS) was only sensitive to OGS of ME globule in mechanically perturbed formulation. Collectively, the study illustrated the specificity and essential role of intact NMR methods in measuring the critical microstructure attributes of soft-core NE systems quickly, accurately, and non-invasively. Therefore, the selected NMR approach can be a unique diagnostic tool of molecular microstructure or Q3 property in o/w NE formulation development, and quality assurance after manufacture process or excipient component changes. Titanium alloys are difficult to machine and have poor tribological properties. Nanoparticles have good cooling and lubricating properties, which can be used in metal cutting fluid. The lubrication characteristics of the two-dimensional materials Ti3C2TX MXene and graphene oxide in water-based fluid for titanium alloys were comparatively investigated in this paper. Graphene oxide had smaller friction coefficients and wear volume than Ti3C2TX MXene nanofluid. As to the mechanism, MXene easily formed TiO2 for the tribo-chemical reaction, which accelerated wear. Moreover, GO nanofluid can form a more uniform and stable friction layer between the frictional interface, which reduces the friction coefficient and decreases the adhesive wear. The effects of different surfactants on the lubricating properties of MXene were further investigated. It was found that the cationic surfactant Hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (1631) had the lowest friction coefficient and anti-wear properties for the strong electrostatic attraction with MXene nanoparticles. The results of this study indicate that 2D nanoparticles, especially graphene oxide, could improve the lubricating properties of titanium alloys. It provides insight into the application of water-based nanofluids for difficult-to-machine materials to enhance surface quality and cutting efficiency. The paper presents conclusions from research conducted at the Warsaw University of Technology in 2019–2023 regarding the combustion of fuel–water emulsions in a miniature gas turbine. The presented conclusions were made taking the current state of knowledge available in the literature into account. Particular emphasis was placed on explaining the discrepancies in the results of the experimental studies available in the literature. The main aspects of the combustion of the fuel–water emulsions that were analyzed were their impact on the emissions of NOx and CO, as well as the impact of the surfactant included in the fuel mixture on the combustion process, emissions and the formation of deposits on the walls of the combustion chamber. The impact of the emulsion fuel on fuel consumption was also discussed. In order to explain the changes occurring in the combustion chamber as a result of adding water to the fuel, numerical methods and methods of fluid mechanics were used. Studies have shown a positive impact of the use of fuel–water emulsions on CO and NOx emissions and fuel consumption. It was also demonstrated that fuel additives used for emulsification can create deposits on the walls of the hot engine section. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
