The ground has long been cited as a key contributing factor for injury risk in the cross-country phase of eventing. The current study aimed to develop a practically useful standardized protocol for measuring eventing cross country ground. Data collection was split into three phases: Phase 1 (Validation), Phase 2 (Expansion of data set), and Phase 3 (Threshold establishment). During Phase 1, data from nine event courses were collected using an Orono Biomechanical Surface Tester (OBST), Vienna Surface Tester (VST), Lang Penetrometer, Going Stick, and moisture meter. Using linear regression, 80% of the variability in cushioning measured with the OBST was predicted from moisture and VST measurements (p < 0.001). In Phase 2, objective data from 81 event courses and subjective assessments from 180 event riders were collected. In Phase 3, k-means cluster analysis was used to classify the courses into ten clusters based on average course measurements of moisture, cushioning, firmness, stiffness, depth, and coefficient of restitution. Based on cluster membership, course average subjective data (16 courses) were compared using a General Linear Model. Significant differences (p < 0.05) in subjective impact firmness (p = 0.038) and subjective cushioning (p = 0.010) were found between clusters. Resistance to the chemotherapeutic agents in the clinical management of cancer remains a significant challenge, and the mechanical environment of cancer cells is one of the major determinants of this. Stiffening of the environment is usually associated with increased chemoresistance of cancer cells, although this process depends on the type of cancer. Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer, and more than half a million people die from it each year worldwide. In this study, we used the most frequent (70% of diagnosed cases) breast cancer phenotype, representing the MCF-7 cell line, to investigate the influence of surface stiffness on its sensitivity to one of the most commonly used anticancer drugs—doxorubicin. We showed that the mechanical environment affected MCF-7 proliferation, adhesion, and the expression and activation of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs). Furthermore, the role of MAPKs in response to doxorubicin was dependent on surface stiffness; nevertheless, surface stiffness did not affect MCF-7 resistance to doxorubicin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To answer this question, we used PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane, 9–574 kPa) and HA (hyaluronic acid gels, 44 Pa–2 kPa) differing in their hydration. We showed that the softest HA inhibited Escherichia coli biofilm growth, while the stiffest PDMS activated it. The bacterial mechanical environment significantly regulated the MscS mechanosensitive channel in higher abundance on the least colonized HA-44Pa, while Type-1 pili (FimA) showed regulation in higher abundance on the most colonized PDMS-9kPa. Type-1 pili regulated the free motion (the capacity of bacteria to move far from their initial position) necessary for biofilm growth independent of the substrate surface stiffness. Finally, this shows that customizing the surface elasticity and hydration, together, is an efficient means of affecting the bacteria's mobility and attachment to the surface and thus designing biomedical surfaces to prevent biofilm growth. Abstract The sap of urushi tree (Toxicodendron vernicifluum (Stokes) F.A. Barkley) has been used for coating materials and is known as urushi or oriental lacquer in East Asia. The potential of termite attacks against wood samples coated with four types of urushi: Ki-urushi, Sugurome-urushi, Kuro-Sugurome-urushi, and Bengara-urushi, in correlation with their chemical and mechanical properties was investigated in this study. Mortalities of the subterranean Formosan termite (Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki) after a 3-week no-choice feeding tests in samples coated with all types of urushi showed no significant difference from those of control samples. However, little is known about the muscle-tendon unit (MTU) mechanics associated with muscle activity and leg adjustments induced by different surfaces during this movement. This study aimed to examine the effects of three surfaces with different properties (artificial turf, hybrid turf, and athletic track) on the muscle mechanics and muscle excitation of the gastrocnemius medialis (GM) and vastus lateralis (VL) during maximal countermovement jumping (CMJ). Twelve participants performed maximal CMJs on the three sport surfaces. GM and VL muscle fascicles were simultaneously imaged using two ultrafast ultrasound systems (500 Hz). MTUs lengths were determined based on anthropometric models and two-dimensional joint kinematics. Surface electromyography (EMG) was used to record GM and VL muscle activity. Surface mechanical testing revealed systematic differences in surface mechanical properties (P = 0.006, η2: 0.26–0.32, large). Specifically, the highest force reduction and vertical deformation values have been observed on artificial turf (65 ± 2% and 9.0 ± 0.3 mm, respectively), while athletic track exhibited the lowest force reduction and vertical deformation values (28 ± 1% and 2.1 ± 0.1 mm, respectively) and the highest energy restitution (65 ± 1%). We observed no significant difference in CMJ performance between the three surfaces (∼35–36 cm, P = 0.66). GM and VL fascicle shortening (P = 0.90 and P = 0.94, respectively) and shortening velocity (P = 0.13 and P = 0.65, respectively) were also unaffected by the type of surface. However, when jumping from greater deformable surface, both GM muscle activity (P = 0.022, η2 = 0.18, large) and peak shortening velocity of GM MTU (P = 0.042, η2 = 0.10, medium) increased during the push-off phase. This resulted in a greater peak plantar flexion velocity late in the jump (P = 0.027, η2 = 0.13, medium). Our findings suggest that maximal vertical jumping tasks in humans is not affected by common sport surfaces with different mechanical properties. However, internal regulatory mechanisms exist to compensate for differences in surface properties.

The gloss defect on a glossy surface is one of the surface defects to be found on injection-molded products. In this paper, the effects of the filling and packing stages on surface gloss are investigated. Based on observations, a generation mechanism of gloss difference is proposed. The difference of the surface gloss can be explained by the replication of the shrinking polymer surface represented by a replication factor. The replication factor is the ratio of melt pressure to surface stiffness, which is influenced by the filling condition and the material properties. The melt pressure as a driving factor to the replication reflects the effect of the flow front speed and viscosity. The surface stiffness as a resisting factor reflects the effect of the flow front speed, mold temperature in the filling stage, and storage modulus. The replication factor shows a high correlation to the surface gloss over a wide range of filling conditions. The goal of this study was to develop a pragmatic approach to build patient-specific models of the peripheral artery that are aware of plaque inhomogeneity. Patient-specific models using element-specific material definition (to understand the role of plaque composition) and homogeneous material definition (to understand the role of artery diameter and thickness) were automatically built from intravascular ultrasound images of three artery segments classified with low, average, and high calcification. The element-specific material models had average surface stiffness values of 0.0735, 0.0826, and 0.0973 MPa/mm, whereas the homogeneous material models had average surface stiffness values of 0.1392, 0.1276, and 0.1922 MPa/mm for low, average, and high calcification, respectively. Localization of peak lumen stiffness and differences in patient-specific average surface stiffness for homogeneous and element-specific models suggest the role of plaque composition on surface stiffness in addition to local arterial diameter and thickness. Surface property is an important factor that is widely considered in crystal growth and design. It is also found to play a critical role in changing the constitutive law seen in the classical elasticity theory for nanomaterials. Through molecular static simulations, this work presents the calculation of surface properties (surface energy density, surface stress and surface stiffness) of some typical cubic and hexagonal crystals: face-centered-cubic (FCC) pure metals (Cu, Ni, Pd and Ag), body-centered-cubic (BCC) pure metals (Mo and W), diamond Si, zincblende GaAs and GaN, hexagonal-close-packed (HCP) pure metals (Mg, Zr and Ti), and wurzite GaN. Sound agreements of the bulk and surface properties between this work and the literature are found. New results are first reported for the surface stiffness of BCC pure metals, surface stress and surface stiffness of HCP pure metals, Si, GaAs and GaN. Comparative studies of the surface properties are carried out to uncover trends in their behaviors. The results in this work could be helpful to the investigation of material properties and structure performances of crystals.

Topographical factors of scaffolds play an important role in regulating cell functions. Although the effects of alignment topography and three-dimensional (3D) configuration of nanofibers as well as surface stiffness on cell behavior have been investigated, there are relatively few reports that attempt to understand the relationship between synergistic effects of these parameters and cell responses. Herein, the influence of biophysical and biomechanical cues of electrospun polyurethane (PU) scaffolds on mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) activities was evaluated. To this aim, multiscale bundles were developed by rolling up the aligned electrospun mats mimicking the fascicles of tendons/ligaments and other similar tissues. Compared to mats, the 3D bundles not only maintained the desirable topographical features (i.e., fiber diameter, fiber orientation, and pore size), but also boosted tensile strength (∼40 MPa), tensile strain (∼260%), and surface stiffness (∼1.75 MPa). Alignment topography of nanofibers noticeably dictated cell elongation and a uniaxial orientation, resulting in tenogenic commitment of MSCs. MSCs seeded on the bundles expressed higher levels of tenogenic markers compared to mats. Moreover, the biomimetic bundle scaffolds improved synthesis of extracellular matrix components compared to mats. Abstract: Here, a new technology was developed to selectively produce areas of high and low surface Young's modulus on biomedical polymer films using micropatterns. First, an elastic polymer film was adhered to a striped micropattern to fabricate a micropattern‐supported film. Next, the topography and Young's modulus of the film surface were mapped using atomic force microscopy. Contrasts between the concave and convex locations of the stripe pattern were obvious in the Young's modulus map, although the topographical map of the film surface appeared almost flat. The concave and convex locations of a polymer film supported by a different micropattern also contrasted clearly. The resulting Young's modulus map showed that the Young's modulus was higher at convex locations than at concave locations. Hence, regions of high and low stiffness can be locally generated based on the shape of the micropattern supporting the film. When cells were cultured on the micropattern‐supported films, NIH3T3 fibroblasts preferentially accumulated in convex regions with high Young's moduli. These findings demonstrate that this new technology can regulate regions of high and low surface Young's modulus on a cellular scaffold with high planar resolution, as well as providing a method for directing cellular patterning. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. All of the cells’ interactions are done through their surfaces. Evaluation of surface physicochemical scaffolds along with other factors is important and determines the fate of stem cells. In this work, biodegradable and biocompatible polyester/polyether based polyurethanes (PUs) were synthesized by polycaprolactone diol (PCL) and poly (tetra methylene ether) glycol (PTMEG) as the soft segment. To assess better the impact of surface parameters such as stiffness and roughness effects on osteogenic differentiation of the human mesenchymal stem cell (hMSC), the dimension effect of substrates was eliminated and two-dimensional membranes were produced by synthesized polyurethane. Surface and bulk properties of prepared 2D membranes such as surface chemistry, roughness, stiffness and tensile behavior were evaluated by Attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and tensile behavior. The prepared 2D PU films had suitable hydrophilicity, biodegradability, water absorption, surface roughness and bulk strength. The hMSCs showed greater osteogenesis expression in PU substrates with more roughness and stiffness than others. Among polymers, polyaniline (PANi) has been introduced as a good candidate for muscle regeneration due to high conductivity and also biocompatibility. Herein, for the first time, we report the use of electrospun nanofibrous membrane of PAN-PANi as efficient scaffold for muscle regeneration. The prepared PAN-PANi electrospun nanofibrous membrane was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Attenuated total reflectance fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and tensile examination. The softer scaffolds of non-composite electrospun nanofibrous PAN govern a higher rate of cell growth in spite of lower differentiation value. On the other hand, PAN-PANi electrospun nanofibrous membrane exposed high cell proliferation and also differentiation value. Thank to the conductive property and higher Young's modulus of composite type due to the employment of PANi, satellite cells were induced into more matured form as analyzed by Real-Time PCR. On the other hand, grafting of composite nanofibrous electrospun scaffold with gelatin increased the surface stiffness directing satellite cells into lower cell proliferation and highest value of differentiation. Our results for first time showed the significant role of combination between conductivity, mechanical property and surface modification of PAN-PANi electrospun nanofibers and provid new insights into most biocompatible scaffolds for muscle tissue engineering. Skilled interactions with sounding objects, such as drumming, rely on resolving the uncertainty in the acoustical and tactual feedback signals generated by vibrating objects. Uncertainty may arise from mis-estimation of the objects' geometry-independent mechanical properties, such as surface stiffness. How multisensory information feeds back into the fine-tuning of sound-generating actions remains unexplored. Participants (percussionists, non-percussion musicians, or non-musicians) held a stylus and learned to control their wrist velocity while repeatedly striking a virtual sounding object whose surface stiffness was under computer control. Sensory feedback was manipulated by perturbing the surface stiffness specified by audition and haptics in a congruent or incongruent manner. The compensatory changes in striking velocity were measured as the motor effects of the sensory perturbations, and sensory dominance was quantified by the asymmetry of congruency effects across audition and haptics. A pronounced dominance of haptics over audition suggested a superior utility of somatosensation developed through long-term experience with object exploration. Large interindividual differences in the motor effects of haptic perturbation potentially arose from a differential reliance on the type of tactual prediction error for which participants tend to compensate: vibrotactile force versus object deformation. Musical experience did not have much of an effect beyond a slightly greater reliance on object deformation in mallet percussionists. The bias toward haptics in the presence of crossmodal perturbations was greater when participants appeared to rely on object deformation feedback, suggesting a weaker association between haptically sensed object deformation and the acoustical structure of concomitant sound during everyday experience of actions upon objects. Biofilms are three-dimensional structures formed as a result of microorganism's adhesion on a biotic or abiotic surface. Once a biofilm is established, it is onerous to eradicate it or kill the pathogens therein. Thus, targeting the microbial adhesion process, the initial stage of biofilm formation, is a reasonable approach to avoid challenges associated with subsequently formed biofilms. While many properties of interacting material that play significant roles in initial bacterial adhesion have been widely studied, the effect of surface stiffness on bacterial adhesion was relatively underexplored. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effect of surface stiffness on the adhesion of microbial species found in the oral cavity by employing representative oral bacteria, Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus oralis, and the fungus, Candida albicans. We compared the adhesion behavior of these species alone or in combination toward various surface stiffness (0.06 – 3.01 MPa) by assessing the adhered and planktonic cell numbers at an early (4 h) adhesion stage under various carbon sources and the presence of conditioning film. Our data revealed that in general, a higher amount of microbial cells adhered to softer PDMS surfaces than stiffer ones, which indicates that surface stiffness plays a role in the adhesion of tested species (either single or co-cultured). This pattern was more obvious under sucrose conditions than glucose + fructose conditions. Interestingly, in monospecies, saliva coating did not alter the effect of surface stiffness on S. mutans adhesion while it diminished S. oralis and C. albicans adhesion. However, in the multispecies model, saliva coating rendered the percentage of all adhered microbes to varied PDMS not distinct. The data provide new insights into the role of surface stiffness on microbial mechanosensing and their initial adhesion behavior which may set a scientific foundation for future anti-adhesion strategies. This paper discusses standardised mechanical test methodologies that measure dynamic coefficient of friction in order to assess the risk of a pedestrian slip. Currently, two shoe-surface contact test methods are specified in British Standards to assess the risk of pedestrian slips during the heel strike phase. A pendulum test device as specified in BS 7976-2:2002 is used to determine the slip resistance of surfaces. Another standard, BS EN ISO 13287:2007 specifies the test method to assess the slip resistance of conventionally soled safety, protective and occupational footwear. Experiments were conducted on six common household surfaces in water contaminated conditions in compliance with the aforementioned standard procedures. The roughness and stiffness of each surface was also found. The results show no statistically significant linear correlation between the dynamic coefficient of friction found via the two standardised test methods. At low levels of roughness, no statistically significant linear correlations were found between the coefficient of friction found via the two standardised test methods and roughness. For flooring with a compliant layer, the contact conditions of the pendulum test device were found to cause friction losses associated with energy dissipated as the surface deforms and recovers during sliding. Differences in sliding velocity and area of contact were found to influence the measurements given by the two test procedures. The higher velocity pendulum is a more appropriate test device to replicate slip in wet conditions as it predicts the worst case scenario. However, it is likely to give misleading results on deformable surfaces as, on such surfaces, as it is not replicating the loading conditions during a real-life heel strike. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Precise engineering of surface properties is essential for improving bio/hemocompatibility of medical implants. In this study, potential of electrospraying (ES) as a coating method to control surface properties was evaluated in vitro. Poly (lactic acid) was coated on 316 L stainless steel plates by ES and spin-coating methods. Surface topography and morphology were studied using confocal and scanning electron microscope (SEM), respectively. Surface hydrophobicity and mechanical properties were investigated by contact angle and nanoindentation tests. Hemocompatibility of samples evaluated using protein adsorption, hemolysis, blood coagulation, complement system and leukocyte activation experiments. Platelet response to the coatings was examined using LDH assay, SEM and ELISA tests. Cell viability studies performed on human endothelial cells using MTT assay and SEM after 1, 4 and 7 days. SEM was used to consider formation of pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilms on the coatings. The results showed that ES increased hydrophobicity (122֯ vs 90֯) and surface roughness (2 μm vs 1.2 μm) but reduced surface stiffness (200 MPa vs 10800 MPa) in comparison to spin-coated samples. ES-coatings had microbead/nanofiber morphology while spin-coated samples had micro/nanoporous structure. Importantly, an almost confluent layer of endothelial cells was observed on ES-coated samples after 4 days in contrast to spin-coated ones. Various blood experiments revealed both coatings were hemocompatible and there was no significant difference among ES and spin-coated samples. Furthermore, ES-coated samples showed significantly lower propensity for biofilm formation. In conclusion, in vitro results revealed potential of ES to engineer different coating properties including hemo/biocompatibility and biofilm resistance for cardiovascular implants applications. Fungi can adapt to a wide range of environmental stresses in the wild and host milieu by employing their plastic genome and great diversity in morphology. Among different adaptive strategies, mechanical stimuli, such as changes in osmotic pressure, surface remodeling, hyphal formation, and cell divisions, could guide the physical cues into physiological responses through a complex signaling network. While fungal pathogens require a pressure-driven force to expand and penetrate host tissues, quantitatively studying the biophysical properties at the host-fungal interface is critical to understand the development of fungal diseases. Microscopy-based techniques have enabled researchers to monitor the dynamic mechanics on fungal cell surface in responses to the host stress and antifungal drugs. Oxygen plasma etching was used to treat silk fibroin (SF). The plasma exposure removed a significant amount of SF but left behind most surface properties close to their original state. However, nano-indenter measurements revealed a substantial increase in surface modulus of swollen SF from 62 to 500 kPa. This allowed oxygen plasma etching as a potential tool to investigate the impact of surface stiffness on cell-substrate interaction. Mouse fibroblasts (L929) and human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSC) were employed as distinct model cases. In vitro results revealed that the increased stiffness of plasma-treated SF affected only L929 adhesion, not hMSC. In this paper, the effect of the tip mass on the sensitivity of flexural vibration modes of an AFM rectangular cantilever has been studied and a characteristics equation for the AFM cantilever has been derived. Then, based on the characteristics equation, a closed form expression for the flexural modal sensitivity of the rectangular cantilever to the surface stiffness variations has been derived. Using numerical experiments, the effect of various tip masses on the sensitivity has been investigated. The results show that for low stiffness materials, the sensitivity of AFM cantilevers with smaller tip masses is more than the cantilever with greater tip masses. While for the materials with high stiffness, the difference in sensitivities is not significant. However, for the cantilevers with bigger tip masses sensitivity is higher. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: In this paper, the resonance frequencies and modal sensitivity of flexural vibration modes of a rectangular atomic force microscope (AFM) cantilever immersed in a liquid to surface stiffness variations have been analyzed and a closed-form expression is derived. For this purpose, the Euler–Bernoulli beam theory is used to develop the AFM cantilever model in liquid. Then, an expression for the resonance frequencies of AFM cantilever in liquid is derived and the results of the derived expression are compared with the experimental measurements. Based on this expression, the effect of the surface contact stiffness on flexural mode of a rectangular AFM cantilever in a fluid is investigated and compared with the case that AFM cantilever operates in the air. The results show that in the low surface stiffness, the first mode is the most sensitive mode and the best image contrast is obtained by excitation this mode, but by increasing the sample surface stiffness the higher modes have better image contrast. In addition, comparison between modal sensitivities in air and liquid shows that the resonance frequency shifts in the air are greater than the shifts in the fluid, which means that for the similar surface stiffness the image contrast in air, is better than liquid. Abstract: Materials mechanical properties are known to be an important regulator of cellular processes such as proliferation, differentiation and migration, and have seen increasing attention in recent years. At present, there are only few approaches where the mechanical properties of thin films can be controllably varied across an entire surface. In this work, we present a technique for controlled generation of gradients of surface elastic moduli involving a weak polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) system of approximately 100 nm thickness and time dependent immersion in a solution of 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide (EDC) as a crosslinking agent. Uniform surface chemistry across the gradient and wettability was provided by the addition of a 10 nm thick plasma polymer layer deposited from vapour of either allylamine or acrylic acid. We used the resultant stiffness gradients (0.5–110 MPa in hydrated state) to investigate the adhesion, morphology and proliferation on human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs). We show that substrate mechanical properties strongly influence HDF cell fate. We also found that in the experimental range of surface properties used in this study, the surface stiffness was a stronger driving force to cells fate compared to chemistry and wettability.
